PHILADELPHIA, PA – The winners of the 4th Annual Briscoe Awards were announced today in two categories, “Philly Fight of the Year” and “Philly Fighter of the Year”.
The thrilling USBA junior middleweight title fight between Derek Ennis and Gabriel Rosado was named the “2010 Philly Fight of the Year”. Ennis defended his regional crown with a close 12-round decision in a high-level , throwback, all-Philly war staged by Peltz Boxing Promotions at the South Philly Arena (now called the Asylum Arena).

IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham was named the “2010 Philly Fighter of the Year”. Cunningham regained his world title with a TKO over Troy Ross in his only fight of 2010. Cunningham becomes the first two-time “Briscoe” winner, having won the same award in 2007.
The Briscoe Awards are presented by phillyboxinghistory.com, and are named for the late, great Philadelphia middleweight Bennie Briscoe. The award itself is a customized statuette in the likeness of “Bad Bennie”.
The winners will be presented their Briscoe Awards at a public event to be held on October 10, 2011, at the VBA Club in Philadelphia, 6-9 PM.

JOHN MARSHALL HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR TAKES TOP PRIZE AT REP. BECERRA’S STUDENT ART COMPETITION.

Congressman Xavier Becerra announced the winners of the 19th annual Student Art Competition during a ceremony at Plaza de la Raza in Lincoln Heights.
This year’s competition drew 176 entries from high schools and community organizations throughout California’s 31st Congressional District, reflecting the theme “Los Angeles: What does your community look like?” “At a time when schools continue to face budget challenges, our talented students still shine,” Rep. Becerra said. “I salute the student artists who produced these inspiring works and their teachers who nurture creative talent in the classroom. Today, we recognize the hard work of our local student artists and their pursuit of artistic expression.” The first place winner of this year’s competition is Natasha Carovska, a junior at John Marshall High School, for her entry “The Life of My Community.” Rep. Becerra with first place winner Natasha Carovska Natasha will receive a trip for two courtesy of Southwest Airlines to Washington, D.C. to see her work on display in the halls of the United States Capitol, where it will hang for the next year.
