Mansour and Mendoza thrilled the sellout crowd at Dover Downs with Mansour throwing some wicked shots to the head and body of Mendoza. Mendoza showed surprisingly good defense and decent counter punching ability. Tensions grew during the fight as both landed shots after the bell that nearly incited a brawl. In the sixth, Mansour landed a huge flurry of punches that forced the corner of Mendoza to throw in the towel. Mansour, ranked number seven by the WBO raised his mark to 16-0 with twelve knockouts and he indicated the he is ready to take on anybody in the top ten. Mendoza fought well but he falls to 32-13-1. In the co-feature, Light Heavyweight Anthony Caputo Smith, had a few tense moments but scored an incredible final round stoppage over Douglas Okola in a six round bout. Smith was dropped and then cut badly over his right eye and it was looking like his perfect mark would be falling by the wayside. In the final round Okola walked into a huge left hook that put him down and out and in an instant Smith scored the knockout.
Smith is now 12-0 with ten knockouts. Veteran Dorin Spivey scored his 40th professional victory with a solid six round unanimous decision over rugged and tough as nails Angel Rios in a Lightweight bout. Spivey boxed well by putting some solid combinations together. Rios never had any quit in him and kept coming forward and even buckled Spivey during the fight. Spivey will now look to jump into the rankings when he takes on Victor Vasquez on February 4th. Ironically, Vasquez was ringside calling the action with Marc Abrams during this bout. Mike Tiberi made it 18-1 with a solid six round unanimous decision over Puerto Rico’s Emill Gonzalez in a Super Middleweight bout. Ovarian cancer survivors, their friends and families, local businesses, corporate teams and employees of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center will join forces May 5 at the 15th annual Sprint for Life 5K Run/Walk and Sprint for Sprouts Kids’ Run. The approximately 3,000 participants will come together for a common cause: to build awareness of ovarian cancer and raise funds for research. here md anderson cancer center
Since 1998, Sprint for Life has raised more than $3.2 million for the Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program at MD Anderson. The event was founded by Judith K. Wolf, M.
D., former director of the Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program, and the late Laura Lee Scurlock Blanton and Sandra G. Davis, for whom the Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program is named.
Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancers. This year, about 22,000 women will receive diagnoses of ovarian cancer, and about 15,000 women will die of the disease. There is no screening or early detection test available. Symptoms are subtle, and only 25% of ovarian cancer tumors are detected in the early stages.
“Funding from Sprint for Life enables us to continue desperately needed research to change these dismal numbers and make significant strides in eradicating ovarian cancer,” said Anil K. Sood, director of the Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program.
Founding families of the Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program have accepted the honor of chairing this year’s milestone event. Event chairs are Kelli Blanton and Eddy Scurlock Blanton Sr., Lee Davis and Gayle Goodman.

The race will start and finish on the MD Anderson campus at the intersection of Pressler Street and Bertner Avenue in the Texas Medical Center (TMC). The 5K Run/Walk begins at 7:30 a.m., with Sprint for Sprouts noncompetitive races for children 12 years and younger, Sprouts parade and Tot Trot following at 9:15 a.m.
