This Saturday night’s card in Puerto Rico that featured fighters from the Philippines has been postponed due to last month’s typhoon in the Philippines according to Dan Rafael of espn.com
The new date will be January 25th.
Puerto Rican flyweight McWilliams Arroyo (14-1, 12 KOs), a 2008 Olympian, was due to face Rocky Fuentes (35-6-2, 20 KOs) of the Philippines in the main event — a title eliminator for the right to become the mandatory challenger for world titleholder Moruti Mthalane of South Africa.
In another bout on the card, Puerto Rico’s Jose “Chelo” Gonzalez (22-1, 17 KOs) was due to meet Mark Acub (13-0, 10 KOs) of the Philippines in a scheduled 10-round lightweight contest, Gonzalez’s first since May, when he was easily beating lightweight titleholder Ricky Burns on his home turf in Scotland and headed toward a major upset when he retired before the 10th round, citing a wrist injury.
“The issue is that two fighters in the main bouts won’t be in Puerto Rico in time because the interviews for the visa are delayed in the Philippines and the fight between McWilliams Arroyo and Rocky Fuentes is an eliminator, and we can’t change this bout,” Rivera said. “So we postponed the card to Jan. 25, when we will present the same show that has been announced.”
Also rescheduled is the junior bantamweight title elimination fight between McJoe Arroyo (13-0, 7 KOs), McWilliams’ twin brother and also a 2008 Olympian, against Eliezer Aquino (15-0-1, 9 KOs) of the Dominican Republic.
