CHICAGO, IL — May 8, 2014 — The American Boxing Association is pleased to announce the appointment of Juan Curiel as its managing director, effective immediately. Curiel has been a member of the American Boxing Association Board since August of 2013, and has been instrumental in setting up mission-critical relationships with fighters and promoters to further the ABA goal of awarding Championship titles and belts to American fighters.

Curiel was born in Mexico City, and immigrated to the United States in 1979, where he settled in Chicago, Illinois. Boxing is in his blood. His father and inspiration, Alfsonso Curiel was a Mexican Diamond Champion as an amateur fighter in the 1950s. It was in Chicago where Curiel founded HACP Boxing, using his love and talent for boxing to coach and mentor amateur and professional boxers. Curiel became a United States citizen in 2002, a Police Officer in 2006, and the founder of Curiel Insurance Group, where he is a licensed insurance agent and broker.

“This is a great opportunity for the ABA,” said Dean Smith, President of the American Boxing Association. “Juan has been such an integral part of our organization since he joined us in 2013, and has already begun building the types of relationships the ABA wants to have with American athletes. This year we will crown our first American Champion, and Juan will be at the forefront of that effort.”

For his part, Curiel is excited to leverage his insurance background to benefit the Champions. “In addition to awarding the first ABA Champion a 14 carat diamond, ruby and sapphire belt upon his or her third successful title defense, we plan to offer all of our Champions who wish to participate with Life Insurance and Annuities for retirement. We will also be hosting events to benefit the fighters’ retirement funds. As an organization, we are committed to taking care of our Champions and their families.”

The American Boxing Association (ABA) was created to allow for American boxers to have a belt to fight for and defend with a sense of national pride. Like our counterparts in Great Britain, and other parts of the world, the ABA aims to provide an opportunity for American citizens to fight for and defend a patriotic title. The opportunity is available for all American boxers with requisite experience, drive, and dedication.
