WBA heavyweight championship between Ruslan Chagaev and Fres Oquendo moved to July 6th
The regular WBA world heavyweight championship bout between Ruslan Chagaev and Fres Oquendo will now take place on July 6th in Grozny (Chechnya), Russia. Promoter Timur Dugazaev decided to move the date for four weeks to give all parties involved more time to get ready for this big event. The new date will be on a Sunday because there are no games of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil scheduled for that date in between the quarter- and semifinals.
“In consultation with the team of Fres Oquendo and the WBA, we had to put the fight back a bit”, said Dugazaev. “We are planning a mega event and want everything to be perfectly prepared. This also gives us more time to look after the invitations and visas to the many guests of honor.”
The VIP guest list includes former heavyweight champions David Haye, Lamon Brewster, Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson. In addition to that action stars Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal are expected to attend the show in Grozny. The world championship bout will take place at the 30,000 seat Ahmat Arena.
“We are planning to set up the biggest boxing show the world has ever scene. It will be a huge production”, adds Dugazaev. The undercard of Chagaev vs. Oquendo features former WBC world cruiserweight champion Juan Carlos Gomez (taking on unbeaten Goran Delic) and German heavyweight prospect Edmund Gerber (vs. Vicente Sandez from Mexico).
