PHILADELPHIA (February 23, 2010)—“Hammerin” Hank Lundy is undefeated and wants to prove to the world that he is one of the top Lightweight prospect’s anywhere and he is willing to face anyone to prove that.

Lundy of Philadelphia took his record to 17-0-1 with ten knockouts with a ten round split decision against former Cuban amateur star Richard Abril (12-1-1) on January 22nd in Boston.

Lundy has a fan friendly style and has the confidence that champions need to excel to the next level.

“Look at the records of the guys who I have fought.. I was fighting opponents with fifty-plus fights in my sixth bout. “, said Lundy

“I have fought many veterans, undefeated guys and now contenders. I am ready for the next level so any lightweight out there preferably in the top ten because I know I am very close to realizing my dream to become world champion.”

Lundy has taken on five undefeated guys (4-0-1) before his meeting with Abril. Lundy annihilated then 10-0 Jason Cintron on April 24, 2009 and the momentum has continued to grow on his way to a significant fight.

“He is Mr. Excitement and shortly he will be Mr. World champion”, said Lundy’s manager Ivan Cohen.

“We are looking to move him rapidly as we he is ready for anybody in the Lightweight division. We are working on getting him a little more exposure here in Philly then it’s time to unleash him on the world.”

Lundy is currently ranked sixth by the NABO and is ready to fight anybody in order to get his chance at the world title.

Lundy, who is promoted by Providence, based Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment Sports feels the same way as the fighter and manager.

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, WBA Featherweight champion will take on undefeated Argentinean Jonathan Victor Barros (28-0-1, 16 KO’s) March 27th in Germany.

The card will take place in Hamburg and will be the first show of Gamboa’s co-promoter, Arena-Box deal with German television network SAT.1

“We don’t know a lot about him, but any time you fight a fighter from Argentina, you’ll probably get a crude guy with a decent chin who is a wild puncher, so there is always some danger,” said CarlMoretti of Gamboa’s co-promoter Top Rank. “I know Gamboa is an excellent talent and this is another step as we move forward.”

Mayol, now fighting out of Los Angeles, captured the WBC light flyweight crown in his last fight (November 21) with a win by second-round technical knockout of Edgar Sosa (37-5) in Mexico. Mayol, who has stopped 20 of 26 victims, had come off of back-to-back fights against WBO light flyweight titlist Ivan Calderon that ended in technical decisions, due to cuts from accidental head butts suffered by the Puerto Rican, for a Calderon win and draw.

Nino hopes to live-up to his “Giant Killer” nickname by out-boxing and taking Mayol into the later rounds. Nino earned his title shot by winning an 8-round technical decision, when he suffered a cut to his head caused buy an accidental head butt, against Juanito Rubillar (46-11-7) in their June WBC title eliminator in Mexico. Giovanni Segura scored a third round stoppage over Walter Tello toretain his WBA Light Flyweight title in a wild brawl in Acapulco, Mexico.

the two traded shots from the start of the fight with the much shorter Tello showing no fear by throwing wide shots in an effort to work his way inside. There was no gameplan from either guy as one could not tell if Segura or Tello was orthodox or southpaw as they just squared up and whaled away at one another for basically the whole seven minutes of action with Segura landing the harder shots.

Segura landed a bout six straight hard shots that forced referee Luis Pabon to jump in at 1:51 of round three.

Segura, 108 lbs of Bell Gardens, California made the third defense of his crown and is now 23-1 with nineteen knockouts and he expressed interest in fighting WBO champion Ivan Calderon.

Tello, 108 lbs of Panama is now 14-4.

Urbano Antillon scored a third round technical knockout over Luis Antonio Arceo following an accidental headbutt caused a cut over the left eye of Arceo in round three of their scheduled ten round Jr. Welterweight bout.

The bout was action packed from the outset as the two stood toe to toe with Antillon landing the harder shots with left hooks to the head. The two fighters clashed heads in round three that caused the cut and that forced the referee Juan Jose Ramirez to stop the bout at 2:25 of round three.

Antillon, 136 1/2 lbs was coming off his first defeat when he was stopped by Miguel Acosta last fall gets back in the win column and ups his record to 27-1 with twenty knockouts. Arceo, 136 1/2 lbs falls to 22-10-2

Son of the Legend, Omar Chavez remained undefeated by scoring a one-punch knockout over Eugenio Lopez in round one of a scheduled six round Welterweight bout.

Chavez caught Lopez with a leaping left hook and the fight was stopped without a count at 1:44 of round one.

Chavez, 147 lbs is now 20-0-1 with fifteen knockouts. Lopez, 145 1/2 lbs is now 12-16-1.

In an exciting slugfest, seventeen year old Adrian Young remained perfect as he notched his sixth knockout in as many fights as he stopped Orlando Garcia in round three of a scheduled four round Featherweight fight.

Young controlled most of the fights except a few instances when the shorter Garcia landed wild shots for which it drew a large response from the crowd.

The end came when Young landed a short to the siude of the face that froze Garcia on the ropes and referee Juan Jose Ramirez stopped the bout at 2:39 of round three.

Young, 125 1/2 lbs of Los Mochis, Mexico is now 6-0 with all wins coming early. Garcia is now 3-12

William Gonzalez used the strength of a second round knockdown to score a unanimous decision over Jesus Vazquez in a twelve round Bantamweight fight at the Micccosuke Gaming Resort in Miami, Florida.

In round two, Gonzalez dropped Vazquez with a straight left hand. Vazquez was competitive but seemed to lose most of the rounds with some of the rounds, especially the ninth providing solid two way action.

Gonzalez a former world title challenger from Managua, Nicaragua won by scores of 119-108, 119-108 and 117-110 to raise his ledger to 24-3. Vazquez, of El Dorado, Mexico is now 19-4-1.

In a mild upset, Edel Ruiz scored a fourth round stoppage over former 122 lb champion Clarence “Bones” Adams in a scheduled twelver round Featherweight fight.

In round two, Adams landed a good over hand right but that was the high point for the former champ as he was rocked in round three from a hard right on the ropes. In round four, Ruiz landed a clipping right on the jaw that “short circuited” Adams that led to another right that sent Adams stumbling into the ropes that referee Frank Santore ruled a knockdown. Ruiz scored a second knockdowns another right to the top of the head put Adams in the canvas. Adams fought on only to eat a few more shots before Santore stopped the fight at 1:55 of round four.

Ruiz of Los Mochis, Mexico scored his fourth straight knockout and is now 34-22-4 with twenty-five knockouts. Adams of Las Vegas had not lost in eight years (just 3-0-1-1 in that span) is now 44-7-4.

OLYMPIC bronze medallist David Price returns to action next month after recovering from a hand injury.

Price (4-0) boxes a selected opponent at Leigh Indoor Sports Village on Friday March 19 on a Frank Maloney show being televised live by Sky Sports.

The 6ft 8in Liverpool boxer now hopes for an injury free year which will help him rise towards to summit of the British heavyweight rankings.

Maloney said: “David’s right hand has been concerning him for some time, but it has now been sorted.

“I believe that David will hit harder than ever now and is determined to show that he is Britain’s best heavyweight prospect.

“I saw David spar with another one of my hopefuls, Tom Dallas last year and he showed then that he is for real.”

Price added: “I couldn’t be any happier than where I am now, and once I get my wins into double figures I will start thinking of titles.”

Nonito Donaire retained the Interim WBA Super Flyweight championship with a third round stoppage over late replacement and undersized Manuel Vargas at The Hilton Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

The size disparity was evident early as Donaire pushed Vargas back anytime he needed to with his punches. Vargas was very guarded early as the former minimumweight title challenger knew he was really up against the odds on this night. In round three, Donaire landed a heavy three punch combination that was capped off by a big uppercut that sent Vargas down flat on his back for referee Joe Cortez ten count at 1:33 of round five.

Donaire, 115 lbs of General Santos City, Philippines will now look for a Summer showdown rematch with Vic Darchinyan as his record now stands at 23-1 with fifteen knockouts. Vargas, 114 lbs of Laguas De Moreno, Mexico is now 26-5-1

Fernando Montiel remained his WBO Bantamweight title with a body shot knockout over Ciso Morales.

Montiel landed a left to the body and a grazing right that sent Morales down for referee Robert Byrd’s ten count and the bout was waved off at 2:06.

Montiel, 118 lbs of Los Mochis, Mexico is now 40-2-2 with thirty knockouts. Morales, 118 lbs of Talabon Bohol, Philippines is now 14-1.

Gerry Penalosa turned back the clock and fought through two nasty cuts but showed his experience but still came up on the short end of a close split decision loss to Eric Morel in a WBO Interim Bantamweight title bout.

Morel boxed very well over the over the first few rounds as he jabbed and moved in and out befuddling Penalosa. That didn’t last long as Penalosa was very patient and began to apply pressure in little bunches as he would land some pesky three and four punch combinations. In round six, two accidental headbutts opened up two separate cuts around the eyes of Penalosa but despite the blood, the fight was allowed to continue and that seemed to light a fire under Penalosa.

Penalosa looked to be getting the better of the action over the second half of the fight with his work rate whereas Morel would land some jabs and move but not many power shots behind them. Penalosa could very well have taken five of the last six rounds but it wasn’t to be as Morel got the split decision by scored of 116-112; 115-113 with Penalosa gaining a card 115-113.

Morel, 117 lbs of Madison, WI vis San Juan , PR now will gain a shot at Fernando Montiel with a record of 42-2. Penalosa, 118 lbs of San Caious, Philippines is now 54-8-2.

Bernabe Concepcion hung on for a unanimous decision over Mario Santiago in a Featherweight elimination bout.

Concepcion had a lot of success early as he landed winging rights hands and backed up Santiago with some flush shots. Santiago was jabbing but little else as he ate those shots. In round six, a booming right sent Santiago to the deck and and he was hurt. Concepcion tried to end things but Santiago held him off and landed a enough shots that Concepcion was backing off towards the end of the round.

Concepcion took the next couple rounds to build up his comfortable lead on the cards. Santiago got foing towards the end of the ninth and carried that momentum into the final round as he rocked Concepcion with a barrage of punches against the ropes and Concepcion looked to be in trouble. Concepcion tried to fire back in a wildly entertaining exchange that thrilled the crowd for the last thirty seconds of the fight.

It was too little, too late fro Santiago as Concepcion, 126 lbs of Catandunes, Philippines, won by scores of 98-91; 96-93; 97-92 to raise his record to 28-3-1and earn a shot at WBO champion Juan Manuel Lopez in June. Santiago, 126 lbs of Ponce, Puerto Rico is now 21-2-1.

Ji Hoon Kim scored a fifth round stoppage over Tyrone Harris in a scheduled ten round Lightweight bout at The Pechanga Hotel and Resort in Temecula, CA.

Harris came out early and controlled the action over the firt stwo rounds as he used his technical ability and landed some nice right hooks from his southpaw stance. The bout slowly started to change in Kim’s favor as he applied the pressure and started to back Harris up.

In round four a little cut opened up over the right eye of Harris. Kim started the fifth out like gangbusters as he applied serious pressure and scored a knockdown from a barrage of punches to the body. Kim jumped on Harris and landed several unanswered punches that led referee Wayne Hedgepath to stop the bout at 1:52 of round five.

Kim, 133 1/2 lbs of Goyang City, South Korea is now 20-5 with seventeen knockouts. Harris, 132 1/2 lbs of Lansing, MI is now 24-6.

Ruslan Provodnikov scored an eighth round stoppage over former IBF Lightweight champion Javier Jauregi in round eight of a scheduled ten round Jr. Welterweight bout.

Provodnikov dominated the action as he landed vicious shots to the head and body of Jauregui with Juaregui throwing and landing very little throughout the affair.

In round eight, Provodnikov landed some solid lefts and then a perfect right that set up a flurry on the ropes until referee Jack Reiss stopped the bout at 2:10 of round eight.

Provodnikov, 141 1/2 lbs of Brazuka, Russia now is 15-0 with ten knockouts. Juaregui, 142 lbs of Guadalajara, Mexico is now 53-17-2

Maxim Vlasov scored a first round stoppage over Julius Fogle in a scheduled six round Super Middleweight bout.

Vlasov was more aggressive until he landed a right hand that sent Fogle to his knees. Referee Wayne Hedgepath counted to ten just as Fogle got to his feet and the fight was over at 2:42 of round.

Vlasov, 166 1/2 lbs of Russia is now 16-0 with seven knockouts. Fogle of Cary, NC is now 15-2.

Garrett Simon made quick work over an overmatch and rotund Francisco Mireles in a scheduled four round Heavyweight bout.

Simom dropped Mireles with the first punch of the fight and then got the victory after a barrage on the ropes for which referee Jack Reiss mercifully stopped the bout.

Simon, 202 lbs is now 2-0 with two knockouts. Mireles, 262 lbs of Agua Prieto, Mexico is now 8-5

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Former IBF 122 lb champion Steve Molitor will have his chance to reclaim that belt when he takes on Takalani Ndlovu on March 27th at Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada.

Ndlovu, who ranked number-one by the IBF was to have fought Caballero but neither his promoter nor Caballero’s promoter, Warrior Boxing made any type of bid for the fight and Caballero was relieved of his title.

It did not seem to be a big deal to Leon Margules of Warriors boxing as he has other plans for Caballlero.

“We didn’t bid because we had no place to put the fight and my guy wants to go to 126 pounds anyway,” Warriors Boxing’s Leon Margules told ESPN.com about why he didn’t bid on Caballero-Ndlovu. “If we had a place to do it and could have paid Caballero his money, he would have made the weight. But we didn’t and now he’s going to move up. There are better opportunities and bigger fights for him at 126 pounds.”

Margules and Top Rank have talked about the possibility of Caballero challenging featherweight titlist Yuriorkis Gamboa in the spring or summer on HBO.

“I told [Top Rank’s] Carl Moretti, ‘Yes, we’re interested,’ ” Margules said.

“All I’ve been thinking about is becoming a two-time champion, and nobody is going to get in my way,” said Molitor, 29. “Especially Ndlovu. As good as I was the first time against him, Ndlovu’s crazy to think he has a chance of beating me in a rematch. I’m here to not only regain my title, but to show the world I’m even better now than I was during my first title reign. That means laying an even more convincing beating on Ndlovu this time around.”

“I have earned my mandatory spot in the IBF rankings, and the fact that I’m now No. 1 and Steve No. 2, speaks volumes. This time around it will be far different from the last time I fought Steve,” Ndlovu said. “I’m not overconfident, but the fact that I have agreed to go back to Canada, shows my mindset for this fight. This is most likely my last chance to win the IBF world title and I’m prepared to do what ever it takes to beat Steve.”

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Gerson Guerrero, who was to challenge Nonito Donaire this Saturday night for an interim 115 lbs title, failed his eye exam and Donaire’s promoter Top Rank is scrambling to find a new opponent to headline this Saturday’s Pay Per View event in las Vegas.

Top Rank Matchmaker Brad Goodman has a short list of opponents to may fill the void.

On Goodman’s short list of potential replacements are two other fighters from Mexico: Manuel Vargas (26-4-1, 11 KOs), a former interim strawweight titlist who has also fought as a flyweight, and Hugo Ruiz (22-1, 21 KOs). Goodman attempted to line up former junior bantamweight titlist Jose “Carita” Lopez of Puerto Rico for the bout, but he was nowhere close to the 115-pound weight limit.

“I guess [Guerrero] has some sort of eye problem, but I am just ready for this fight,” Donaire told ESPN.com moments after being told of the issue. “I’ve always been prepared to fight anybody. I can adapt to any changes. I am ready for anything. Whoever they put in, I’m ready if Guerrero can’t make it. So be it.”

Donaire said, if necessary, he was willing to make Saturday’s fight in the 118-pound bantamweight division.

“As long as I get to fight, I am happy,” Donaire said.

Cameron Dunkin, Donaire’s manager, was consulting with Goodman about a new opponent.

“Nonito used to tell all the time that before I managed him, he never knew who he was fighting and he would take fights on short notice,” Dunkin said. “He would say, ‘I am ready for anybody. I’ll work it out. Just let me know who it is and I’ll be ready to go.’ We’ll get somebody and fight because Nonito is a fighter. A lot of guys would be blaming and complaining, but he’s not like that. He’s got a big smile on his face and says he’s just ready to go.”

I’m a throwback fighter who goes all out. Garay may not be a great puncher but he’s a 2-time world champ. He throws a lot of fast punches and I’m a big hitter. Garay (32-4, 17 KOs), rated No. 3 by the WBA, is a popular Argentinean who defeated Yuri Barashian by decision for the WBA light heavyweight title in 2008, successfully defended against present WBO Interim champion Juergen Braehmer by decision, and then lost his belt by decision last June to Gabriel Campillo. According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, world Middleweight champion, Kelly Pavlik will defend his crwon against Jr. Middleweight champion Sergio Martinez on April 17th in Atlantic City and will be televised by HBO.

“We’re waiting for Lou [DiBella, Martinez’s promoter] to send back the contract, which he said there are no problems with,” said Top Rank’s Bob Arum, Pavlik’s promoter. “Kelly is on board and we’re planning a press conference in New York, but HBO wanted us to hold off until after the Olympics. But the fight is agreed to. We’re good on our side and Lou tells me it’s good to go on his side. We’re putting off the press conference strictly because of the Olympics.”

“It’s a great Atlantic City fight, especially with Williams-Martinez having just taken place there and Pavlik being the most proven attraction there in the post-[Arturo] Gatti era,” DiBella said.

“It’s a terrific fight and I think Kelly is going to win, but we know this is a very tough fight,” Said Bob Arumn who promotes Pavlik.”But I think that Kelly has the firepower to come through and win the fight.” Pavlik, who is 6-foot-2, is the naturally bigger and stronger fighter compared to the 5-11 Martinez, 34, who is a southpaw and faster.

“Sergio Martinez is the best 154-pound fighter in the world, but he simply could not turn down an opportunity to take on the true middleweight champion of the world,” DiBella said. “While size is not his advantage, speed is, and sometimes David slays Goliath. We had to bite the bullet a little bit, but it’s a great opportunity even though it is above the weight where Sergio prefers to fight. But he didn’t do so badly at middleweight against Williams did he? We all know that a lot of people thought Sergio won that fight. At some point, he’d like to move down and fight in his own weight class, but this is a big opportunity for him.”

“There are no substantive issues on the paperwork between me and Arum,” DiBella said. “The only issue that exists is that Kelly has had some health issues and I want to know that if Sergio trains for the fight and Kelly is forced to pull out for some reason that Sergio would able to fight another opponent we agree on in Montreal on the Bute undercard.

“If something happens and Kelly’s staph infection comes back or he has another problem with his hand, we want to be able to fight somebody else on that date. My guy can’t have another long layoff. But there is no issue about anything between me and Bob. I just need to get this worked out with HBO, but I don’t think it is going to be an issue.”

Pavlik, 36-1 with thirty-two knockouts and Martinez will compete in a bout for which HBO will be televising another fight from Montreal featuring IBF Super Middleweight champion Lucian Bute defending against Edison Miranda.

These two bout could be the groundwork for a possible Bute-Pavlik fight later in 2010 should both champions retain their titles.

In the main event, USBA Jr. Middleweight champion Derek “Pooh” Ennis tuned up for a spring title defense by dropping Edwin Vazquez twice in round five with a vicious body assault to score a knockout at 1:26 of that round in their scheduled eight round non title clash.

Ennis showed tremendous hand speed and clearly worked the body behind a solid jab. Vazquez showed a lot of heart and determination as he would not only mock Ennis but try to start some offense for himself.

In round five, Ennis dropped Vazquez with a blistering left to the body and moments later he did the same thing to the other side of Vazquez’ body with the right and the fight called off.

In one of the most anticipated undercard bouts, Former World Junior Amateur champion Joey Dawejko of Philadelphia needed just forty-seven seconds to dispose of Ricardo Johnson.

Dawejko landed a perfect counter right hand that thrilled the crowd that was heavily supporting the nineteen year old from the Tacony section of town.

Former U.S Olympic alternate, Eric “The Outlaw” drilled out former world title challenger Roberto Bonilla at the end of round one of their scheduled six round featherweight bout.

Some are calling it controversial; some think the right decision was rendered; now you can be the judge as former Light Heavyweight and Cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek battled former U.S. Olympian in a an action filled Heavyweight bout that had a crowd of over 10,000 fans on the edge of their seats at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

It was a close knit battle where both combatants had their moments. But it was Adamek who gained the unanimous decision win and he may now be in position for an April 24th showdown with former world title challenger Chris Arreola.

Estrada was irate at the decision and now the fans all over the world will be able to give their opinion when they order this terrific Heavyweight scrap.

Fans can also witness a terrific three fight undercard that was headlined by undefeated New York based Middleweight, Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin make his return to the squared circle when he takes on veteran Fernando Zuniga.

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com., a proposed bout between WBO “Interim” Lightweight bout Michael Katsidis and IBF Jr. Lightweight champion Robert Guerrero is off due to Guerrero’s wife being seriously ill as her bout Leukemia has returned.

“It’s a very tough situation,” co-manager Shelly Finkel told ESPN.com. “He can’t fight like that. That’s what we all told him and he finally agreed. It’s too much.”

Guerrero’s wife, Casey, was diagnosed with leukemia two weeks before then-featherweight titleholder Guerrero was scheduled to defend his belt against Martin Honorio in November 2007.

Guerrero left his wife’s bedside just a couple of days before the fight, knocked Honorio out in the first round, and returned to his wife and their two children.

Casey Guerrero’s leukemia eventually went into remission but is back. She underwent a bone marrow transplant recently and has been at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif., for about 10 days, Guerrero’s co-manager Bob Santos said.

“They won’t really know if the bone marrow is going to take, so we’re hoping that it does,” Santos said. “Robert wanted to fight. He thought he could spend half the day with her and train the other half the day, but she started to take a turn for the worse. I told him point blank there is no way I would allow him to fight. Me and Shelly had to talk him out of it. This is a tough sport and if he’s going to fight somebody like Katsidis you have to be 100 percent focused. With this situation, how could he be?”

“She had just been diagnosed and there was a lot of hope and optimism,” he said. “The doctorshttps://theboxinghour.com/wp-admin/media-upload.php?post_id=12472&type=video&TB_iframe=true were like, ‘We can try this and we can do that.’ In this case, it’s hit or miss. We just don’t know if the [bone marrow transplant] is going to work. If this doesn’t work there is nothing they can do for you. “I got the call and they said it’s very serious,” said Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions, who promotes Guerrero. “All of our prayers are with Robert and his wife and we hope that she can pull through. I feel so bad. They have two young kids. I hope that she will be able to make it. His wife is fighting for her life. That is way more important than any fight in a ring.”

OVILL McKENZIE will not be challenging Tony Bellew for the vacant Commonwealth light-heavyweight title next month, despite reports claiming that the fight is on.

Instead, the Derby knockout artist who gets a British passport later this month is targeting winning the Lonsdale belt later this year.

McKenzie (18-9) proved he is of boxing’s most concussive punchers on Friday stopping Billy Boyle in Nottingham inside a round.

McKenzie, 30, will now have his next fight on April 23 on the undercard of Rendall Munroe’s WBC super-bantamweight title final eliminator against Victor Terrazas.

Promoter Frank Maloney: “With the right fights, Ovill can become a big attraction in Midlands and get attention all over Britain.

“Ovill is starting to shift tickets and his popularity is growing all the time. With the right fights he can become star.

“He has been offered a fight with Bellew in March, but it isn’t happening. Ovill is after the British title.”

Bellew was ringside for McKenzie’s triumph against Boyle and his behaviour angered the Prizefighter cruiserweight winner and his team.

Maloney added: “Bellew was out of order with his aggressive cut throat gestures and should know better than to behave like that towards another professional.

“Ovill should have been enjoying his moment of glory, but had to put up with the sort of behaviour seen in American gangster films.

“What has Ovill done wrong to upset Bellew in the past?

“His antics has made sure the fight doesn’t happen for now. I hope Bellew can dwell on the incident now and realise he was wrong.”

Brandon Rios made a statement in the Lightweight division as he pummeled one-time prospect Jorge Teron in round three of a scheduled ten round fight in McAlllen, Texas.

Rios landed heavy power shots over all three rounds as he constantly had Teron backpedaling away from a vicious assualt of hooks to the face. Teron started to bleed from nose in round two as Rios was relentless in his attack. Rios started round three by landing a hard right that backed Teron into the ropes that was follwed by a huge left that sent the mouthpiece of Teron flying out of his mouth. After a brief break to put the mouthpiece in, Rios landed a barrage of punches that made referee Lupe Garcia step in and stop the bout at 1:13 of round three.

Rios, 135 lbs of Oxnard, CA is now 24-0-1 with seventeen knockouts. Teron, 6’0″ 134 1/2 lbs of Bronx, NY took many shots and didn’t go down but is now 23-2-1.

Tomas Villa scored a tenth round disqualification over Juan Ruiz in the final scheduled round of their Featherweight fight.

It was an entertaining battle with both guys giving supreme effort as well as both having moments in the fight. In round ten, Ruiz and Villa were in a clinch and when referee Rafael Ramos tried to break them, Ruiz threw two punches towards Villa and thats when Ramos called a halt to the action at the :18 mark.

Villa is now 21-6-4. Ruiz is 23-6

Jerry Belmontes was cut on the top of his forehead from a first round butt from Morris Chile but Belmontes stuck it out and won a workmanlike unanimous decision in a six round Featherweight bout.

Scores were 60-54, 59-55 and 59-55 for Belmontes, 126 1/2 lbs of Corpus Christie, TX and is now 11-0. Chule, 126 1/2 lbs of Nairobi, Kenya is now 7-9-1.

Edwin Valero made a splash in his first premium cable performance of his career as showed newly added slick defense and boxing skills, incredible heart and courage and landed enough power shots to force Antonio DeMarco to quit on his stool to retain the WBC Lightweight title in Monterrey, Mexico

The heart and courage aspect took place early as an inadvertent elbow landed on the right side of Valero’s forehead and a deep, nasty gash was formed on Valero. That only seemed to light a fire under Valero but instead of turning into the man who was the all out knockout artist but as a slick boxer who paid very much attention to detail, ring generalship and combination punching. Valero continued to do that after the balance of the and landing some hard straight lefts while getting out of the way of any return fire in a Whitakeresque motion as he was lsick with both head and body movement

Vaero mixed it up to the bosy as well as the head while Demarco was able to land some but very few shots of note and seemed to lose steam in the later rounds.

DeMarco gave himself one more round following the eighth as he looked like a spent fighter and he had little success in the ninth and rather then to come out and face more punishment he decided to fight another day giving Valero the well earned an impressive victory.

Valero, 135 lbs of Miranda, Venezuela kept his perfect knockout streak alive at 27-0 with twenty seven knockouts. DeMarco, 135 lbs of Tijuana, Mexico is now 23-2-1

“This was definitely my best performance,’’ said the 5-foot-7½-inch, 28-year- old Valero after making the second title defense of the 135-pound belt he won in April 2009. “I learned I have to pace myself and can’t just come out in the beginning rounds so aggressively.

“I have to save some of that for the later rounds.”

Valero, the busier fighter throughout, connected with many powerful combinations upstairs and to the body, and was as strong in the last round as he was in the first.

“I wasn’t surprised the fight lasted nine rounds. I was expecting it to last the full 12,’’ he said. “I knew I had to keep doing what I was doing in order to win. They thought I wasn’t a boxer and that I couldn’t deal with his reach. They didn’t know that I was a lateral fighter. I showed them that I had a better defense and better legs.’’

A heretofore unknown despite his amazing knockout record – he won his initial 17 starts by first-round knockout — Valero was ecstatic after his debut on SHOWTIME.

“A star is born,” he smiled. “In me, the people have a great boxing champion and with tonight’s performance they have the proof. The fans now know that they will be happy to see my fights.’’

DeMarco fought patiently, perhaps too patiently. He lacked fire and intensity and seemed content to box and land an occasional single punch. If he was waiting for fatigue to set in with Valero, he still is.

“It wasn’t my night,” conceded the 5-foot-10, 24-year-old DeMarco, who entered the scheduled 12-rounder having won 12 and a row and going unbeaten in his last 16 (15-0-1) dating to May 2006. “He got the best of me. I went out there tonight to fight but my body did not respond.”

While dejected, DeMarco did not dispute his corner’s decision to halt the proceedings. “As a Mexican fighter, I did not want to quit, but my corner saw throughout the fight that Valero was the better fighter,’’ he said.’

Luis Carlos Abregu remained undefeated as he came back from a knockdown and score one of his own on the way to a unanimous decision over Richard Gutierrez in a ten round Welterweight bout.

Gutierrez drew first as he landed a perfect left hook that sent Abregu to the canvas in round two. In round three, Abregu landed a hard right hand that was followed by a couple of “cleanup” shots that sent Gutierrez to the deck. Gutierrez ate a few more hard shots but somehow got out the round. Abregi started bozing and landed some nice combinations and boxed weel for the next several rounds.

In round seven, an accidental headbutt caused a cut over the left eye of Abregu. The doctor looked at the cut and Abregu was deemed fit to continue and cruised down the stretch to win by scores of 98-90, 97-97 and 97-91.

Abregu, 147 lbs of Salta, Argentina is now 29-0. Gutierrez, 147 lbs of Miami, FL is now 24-4-1-1.

“I came in knowing that Gutierrez was tough,” said Abregu, who showed surprisingly good boxing skills, movement and defense. “He’s shown it in all his past fights. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy.

“I hurt both my hands in this fight, but whatever injury it is, it was worth it. This was a very hard fight and I am very proud of my performance. I won like I’d hoped. I wanted to be the best man tonight and I was.”

PHILADELPHIA (FEBRUARY 6TH, 2010)—Despite warnings of two plus feet of snow, it was standing room only at The Legendary Blue Horizon and those fans who braved the elements were rewarded with one of the most action filled boxing cards that was reminiscent of the days that made The Legendary Blue Horizon the world’s number one boxing venue.

This night was part of the annual Valentine’s Day Special show promoted by Vernoca L. Michael and Blue Horizon Boxing Inc.

The American Red Cross was present and fans donated money to help the relief efforts in the Earthquake ravaged country of Haiti.

In the main event, USBA Jr. Middleweight champion Derek “Pooh” Ennis tuned up for a spring title defense by dropping Edwin Vazquez twice in round five with a vicious body assault to score a knockout at 1:26 of that round in their scheduled eight round non title clash.

Ennis showed tremendous hand speed and clearly worked the body behind a solid jab. Vazquez showed a lot of heart and determination as he would not only mock Ennis but try to start some offense for himself.

In round five, Ennis dropped Vazquez with a blistering left to the body and moments later he did the same thing to the other side of Vazquez’ body with the right and the fight called off.

In one of the most anticipated undercard bouts, Former World Junior Amateur champion Joey Dawejko of Philadelphia needed just forty-seven seconds to dispose of Ricardo Johnson.

Dawejko landed a perfect counter right hand that thrilled the crowd that was heavily supporting the nineteen year old from the Tacony section of town.

Dawejko is now 2-0.

Former U.S Olympic alternate, Eric “The Outlaw” drilled out former world title challenger Roberto Bonilla at the end of round one of their scheduled six round featherweight bout.

Hunter dominated the action with blazing handspeed until a left to the live put Bonilla down and out at end of the first stanza.

In the fight of the night, Jackie Davis scored a four round unanimous decision over Melisenda Perez in a ladies four round war.

The two traded shots and thrilled the crowd and the fighters received standing ovations throughout the fight.

Swedish heavyweight Andreas Gustafson moved to 4-0 with a stoppage over Levay King at the end of round two of their scheduled four round bout.

Ronald Cruz scored an impressive third round knockout over the experienced Martinus Clay in a scheduled six round bout.

Freddy Hernandez scored a fifth round stoppage over former WBO Jr. Welterweight champion DeMarcus Corleyat 1:48 of a scheduled ten round Welterweight bout at the Chumash Hotel and Resort in Santa Ynez, California.

The two combatants fought very hard over the first four rounds with each guy taking turns controlling the action. Hernandez had a decided size advantage and in round five landed a booming right that froze Corley before he plummeted to the canvas for which referee Pat Russell stopped the fight.

Hernandez, 148 lbs of Lynwood, CA is now 28-1-1 with nineteen knockouts. Corley, 143 lbs of Washington, DC is 36-13-1.

“My corner kept telling me to throw the right hand more and pick up the pace,’’ said Hernandez, who came out for the fifth with renewed intensity. “We’d seen tapes and saw where Corley slowed down a little after three or four rounds.

“His experience gave me lots of difficulties. That and the fact he was a southpaw and that we only had a week’s notice to prepare. I fought a southpaw before (Damian Frias on Oct. 23, 2009, on ShoBox) but I had a month to prepare for that. I cut in all my fights so I wasn’t concerned about them.

“This is definitely my biggest victory. To knock out an experienced former champion who never gets knocked out is great.’’

“I got caught, simple as that,’’ Corley said. “It happens to the best. Instead of me going bing, bing, bing (punches) and moving out of range, I went bing, bing, bing and stood up and got caught with a clean shot. Until then, I was frustrating him and fighting my fight.

“But I’m not going anywhere. As soon as I can return to the gym, I will. I’m definitely going to fight again.’’

Francisco Contreras scored an emphatic first round stoppage over Juan Castaneda in a scheduled eight round Jr. Welterweight bout.

Contreras jabbed early until he landed a big right hand that wobbled Castaneda before two more shots put Castaneda down for the ten count at 1:38 if round one.

Contreras, 136 1/2 lbs of Irvington, NJ is now 13-0 with twelve knockouts. Castaneda, 137 lbs of La Paz, Mexico is now 16-3-1.

“I am happy to get this win.’’ the 5-foot-10-inch, 25-year-old Contreras said. “All the shots I was hitting him with were solid. It’s too bad for him he couldn’t continue, but if he had gotten back up, I would have knocked him down again.’’

Castaneda said he felt he twisted his ankle just before he got hit and again after he hit the canvas. “This is really a tough way to lose. I hope he’ll give me a rematch,’’ the 5-foot-7, 26-year-old’ Castaneda said. He got me with a great shot and I wanted to get up and keep fighting. But I just couldn’t.’’

Estrada weighs in at a record-low for Saturday’s title bout

NEWARK, N.J. (Feb. 5, 2010) — On the eve of the biggest fight of his career, Jason “Big Six” Estrada is in the best shape of his life.

The former 2004 U.S. Olympian clocked in at a lean 237 pounds Friday at the weigh-in for his IBF International Heavyweight championship bout against Polish champion Tomasz Adamek, which will take place tomorrow night at the Prudential Center.

Until Friday, Estrada (16-2, 4 KOs) had never weighed in at less than 239 pounds in his professional career, but with eight weeks to train for this fight, he is in peak physical condition as he prepares to face the hard-punching champion in front of what figures to be a pro-Adamek crowd.

“I’ve never had this much time to train for a fight,” Estrada said. “I’ve always been told three weeks or four weeks (in advance). I’ve never had eight weeks. Never.

“You can always add more to your plate. I’ve never had a problem working hard, especially when it’s such a big opportunity.”

While Adamek is already looking ahead to a bout with heavyweight challenger Chris Arreola, Estrada is hoping to use his speed, footwork and experience at the heavyweight level to pull off the upset. A former cruiserweight world champion, Adamek (39-1, 27 KOs) has fought just once as a heavyweight, knocking out 42-year-old Andrew Golota in October.

“Golota was a big heavyweight in his day — a big puncher and a big, strong guy — but that is not the same Golota,” Estrada said. “To me that’s not really a fight that I would take as a justification to fight me in the heavyweight division. Maybe [Adamek] should have fought someone else.”

Adamek weighed in at 220 1/2 pounds Friday. Saturday’s “Heavy Artillery” show, promoted by Main Events and Ziggy Promotions in association with Classic Entertainment & Sports, begins at 7 p.m.

JASON BOOTH insists he will walk away from boxing a happy man if he wins a London belt outright tomorrow night (5th Feb).

Booth, 32, makes the third defence of his super-bantamweight crown when he faces Matthew Marsh (13-1) at Nottingham’s Harvey Hadden Centre, meaning the belt will be his for keeps if he wins.

It will be his 16th major title fight in a rollercoaster career spanning almost 14 years.

Booth says: “”If I could win the Lonsdale belt outright I will have achieved what I wanted to when I started out and I’ll be happy with that.

“I would like to go further, but anything after this is a bonus.”

Booth capitalised on Marsh’s misfortune last year, when the Londoner gave up this title because of weight-making problems.

Booth won the vacant crown against Mark Moran last April and has looked impressive in subsequent defences against Rocky Dean and Michael Hunter.

Booth, beaten just five times in 39 fights added: “I don’t think a lot of Marsh, but I know he is going to try, come forward and has a winning mentality.”

Marsh’s trainer Johnny Eames believes Marsh’s weight making problems are a thing of the past, after he started working with a professor who is a specialist in dietary problems.

He said: “Matthew needed a rest from boxing last year because all he has done since he was 12-years-old was making weight.

“He took a few months out of the gym and now has got professional advice and is doing the weight properly.”

“There is no way Booth can beat him over 12 rounds and everybody at the gym has piled on Matthew to win on points at 10-1.”

PHILADELPHIA, PA—Unbeaten Mike Jones, of North Philadelphia, has settled into training camp 30 miles outside of Philadelphia in Langhorne, PA, for his Feb. 27 match at Bally’s Atlantic City, NJ, with former world-title challenger Henry Bruseles, of Gurabo, Puerto Rico, for the North American Boxing Association (NABA) welterweight title. Jones splits his workouts between the Newtown Athletic Club in Newtown, PA, and the Hard Rock Gym in Langhorne.

Jones, 27, is ranked No. 8 by the World Boxing Association (WBA), No. 11 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF), No. 16 by the World Boxing Council (WBC). His 19-0 record includes 16 knockouts.

Bruseles, 29, is 28-3-1, 15 K0s. He has won his last seven fights, scoring wins over Ben Tackie, Wilfredo Negron, Mario Ramos and Robert Frankel. Bruseles has been stopped once, by Floyd Mayweather.

Two other major fights on the card feature: Kendall Holt, of Paterson, NJ, vs. Kaizer Mabuza, of Johannesburg, South Africa, 12 rounds, IBF junior welterweight eliminator; Saul Roman, of Tijuana, Mexico, vs. Gabriel Rosado, of Philadelphia, PA, 10 rounds, junior middleweights.

NEWARK, N.J. (Feb. 4, 2010) — This is more than just a shot at a heavyweight title for Jason “Big Six” Estrada. A victory for Estrada over Tomasz Adamek on Saturday night would also be a win for his fellow Olympic teammates who’ve ventured into the professional ranks.

“I want to thank all of the Polish people that have come here to support Tomasz Adamek,” Estrada’s promoter, Jimmy Burchfield of Classic Entertainment & Sports, said during Wednesday’s press conference, “but Jason ‘Big Six’ Estrada is fighting for the United States of America.

“He’s fighting for his classmates of the 2004 Olympiad. He’s fighting for every future, past and present Olympian. We don’t come to this fight as an opponent. We come to fight. We come to win.”

Estrada, a 2004 U.S. Olympian, is 16-2 as a pro with four knockouts. Adamek, a former cruiserweight world champion now competing as a heavyweight, is 39-1 with 27 knockouts. Saturday’s IBF International Heavyweight title bout will take place at the Prudential Center.

“Funny thing is when I was playing video games as a light heavyweight I was always playing as Tomasz Adamek,” Estrada said. “[I] loved his style and I still love what he did in the light heavy and cruiserweight division, but this is a different story. He’s among big boys now and it will be over his head to fight people like me. Experience, ring ability — everything is on my side.”

Adamek, a man of few words, has predicted a lopsided victory and, in some circles, has guaranteed to knock out Estrada — something no one has done in Estrada’s amateur or professional career.

“Jason is a very unorthodox fighter for this weight class, buy I always believed that no matter who I’m fighting against, it is up to me if I win or lose,” Adamek said. “I know his strengths. I’m sure he thinks he knows my weaknesses, but whatever we are saying now makes no difference whatsoever. You can prove yourself in only one way — by winning. And this is exactly what I intend to do on Saturday.”

Unlike many of his past fights, Estrada has had eight weeks to prepare for Saturday’s bout, which, in addition to his experience as a heavyweight, could give him the edge . Those questions will be answered once the bell rings Saturday night.
