EDUARD FOLAYANG STOPS SHINYA AOKI TO BECOME ONE LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION

11 November 2016 – SINGAPORE: The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), returned to the Singapore Indoor Stadium for another exciting evening of world-class mixed martial arts (MMA) action. ONE: DEFENDING HONOR showcased Asia’s premier combat sports talents on the global stage of MMA with a series of compelling bouts. In the main event, Eduard Folayang shocked the world by stopping Shinya Aoki to become the new ONE Lightweight World Champion. In the co-main event, Marat Gafurov retained his title with a submission victory over Narantungalag Jadambaa.

In the main event, Eduard “Landslide” Folayang of Baguio City, Philippines completes his journey through ONE Championship’s lightweight ranks by stopping Asian MMA legend Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki by technical knockout within three rounds to clinch the ONE Lightweight World Championship. Aoki dominated the first round with his Brazilian jiu-jitsu, but Folayang came alive in the second round as he opened up his striking, showcasing his world-class wushu talent. In the third round, Folayang rocked Aoki against the cage fence and finished him off with ground-and-pound.

In the co-main event of the evening, reigning ONE Featherweight World Champion Marat “Cobra” Gafurov of Russia successfully defended his title against challenger and top contender Narantungalag “Tungaa” Jadambaa of Mongolia. It was the champion’s second title defense, after lifting the belt from Jadambaa a year ago. After a brief exchange of strikes, action quickly went to the mat when Jadambaa missed a kick and fell to the canvas. Gafurov followed the Mongolian down and that’s where he worked on the submission. Jadambaa was able to defend for a few moments, but once Gafurov re-established himself, the choke came effortlessly.

Lightweight prospect Amir Khan of Singapore overcame a spirited effort from former Pan Asia BJJ Champion Vaughn “The Spawn” Donayre of the Philippines to win by submission in the third round. After spending the first half of the bout tagging each other with various striking combinations, the two fighters decided to take things to the mat. On the ground, Khan showcased his technical brilliance, threatening Donayre with multiple choke attempts while dominating the grappling exchanges. Although Donayre had his moments, particularly catching Khan in a very deep kimura attempt, the younger fighter survived to win by rear naked choke in the third round.

8-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Michelle Nicolini of Evolve MMA made a successful ONE Championship debut, finishing former Egyptian wrestling champion Mona Samir in one round via submission. Samir tried her best to keep from getting taken down, but Nicolini’s high-level grappling skills made that very difficult. Once on the mat, Nicolini worked her magic and effortlessly secured the choke.

Lightweight veterans Roger “El Matador” Huerta of the United States and Adrian “The Hunter” Pang of Brisbane, Australia went toe-to-toe in an action-packed lightweight contest. The first round saw Huerta own the edge in accuracy and speed, plastering Pang with pinpoint punch combinations while going to work on the Australian’s legs. Pang countered with his straight right hand, which landed with tremendous force. While Huerta landed the cleaner blows, it was clear Pang owned the edge in power and sheer brute strength. Both fighters turned in great performances, but it was Huerta who did just enough to notch the hard-fought victory via split decision.

Former ONE Lightweight World Champion Kotetsu Boku scored a technical knockout victory over Russia’s Timofey Nastyukhin in a highly-anticipated featherweight contest. Nastyukhin blasted Boku with power shots in the first couple of minutes as Boku tried his best to keep his distance. After moments of intense action however, Boku checked a kick and Nastyukhin hurt his leg, falling to the canvas writhing in pain but somehow surviving the round. Nastyukhin then failed to answer the call for the second round and Boku was awarded the TKO.

Singaporean female mixed martial artist Tiffany “Soul Crusher” Teo made her ONE Championship promotional debut with a dominant performance to cheers from fans in attendance. Teo owned the advantage in striking exchanges but surprised everyone with her high-level grappling game, gaining full mount on multiple occasions while pounding away at Abbas who tried her best to defend. In the second round, Teo took Abbas’ back once more and converted on a rear naked choke, forcing her Egyptian opponent to tap out.

Previously unbeaten Singaporean featherweight prospect Benedict Ang experienced the first loss of his career as he went to battle against Pakistani mixed martial artist Ahmed Mujtaba. Both fighters began the bout firing away at the center of the cage as they traded strikes to the roar of crowd. Mujtaba scored points for a near-finish towards the end of round two, taking Ang’s back and working on a rear naked choke. In round three, Mujtaba continued to work towards getting Ang to the ground, scoring on a few more takedowns to earn the unanimous decision victory.

Singaporean fighter Niko Soe made his ONE Championship debut against Malaysian Muhamad Haidar to kick off ONE: DEFENDING HONOR. Both fighters started out aggressively, but it was Soe who showed a more capable set of grappling skills, winning by armbar in the first round to the roar of his hometown crowd.

CES MMA closes out successful 2016 fight series with special Thanksgiving Eve event at Twin River

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Nov. 10th, 2016) — The most wonderful time of the year is finally here, and CES MMA is closing out its 2016 Twin River Casino Fight Series with a special pre-holiday bash.

New England’s premier combat sports promotion returns to Twin River on Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday, Nov. 23rd, 2016 with “CES MMA 40,” featuring the region’s top talent, including lightweight Nate Andrews (9-1, 5 KOs), former featherweight title challenger Joe Pingitore (6-2-1, 1 KO) and the long-awaited return of bantamweight Dinis Paiva (7-6, 4 KOs).

Tickets for “CES MMA 40” are priced at $40.00, $55.00, $100.00 and $100.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesmma.com, www.twinriver.com, www.cagetix.com or www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Casino Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

The Providence, R.I., native Andrews, coming off three consecutive wins since suffering his first career loss in 2014, battles power-punching Newport News, Va., vet George Sheppard (15-11, 9 KOs) in the main event. Andrews headlined “CES MMA 36” in June with a submission win over Luis Muro while Sheppard makes his second appearance with CES MMA and his first since battling former welterweight title-holder Gil de Freitas at “CES MMA 25.”

Pingitore, a Johnston, R.I., native, steps back into the cage for the first time since losing to veteran Matt Bessette at “CES MMA 37” for the promotion’s vacant 145-pound title. Pingitore stepped up in on short notice to battle Bessette and stunned him several times with his efficient striking before eventually losing via second-round submission. On Nov. 23rd, Pingitore takes on Honolulu, Hawaii vet Spencer Higa (4-6, 1 KO), who has won his last two fights.

“CES MMA 40” also marks the long-awaited return of Paiva, the East Providence, R.I., vet who last fought at “CES MMA 31” in October of 2015 in a hotly-contested loss to former title challenger Kody Nordby. The loss snapped Paiva’s four-fight win streak. He returns Nov. 23rd to battle Las Vegas’ Zane Behrend (2-1, 1 KO), who also makes his first appearance in more than a year.

Also on the undercard of “CES MMA 40,” Cranston, R.I., welterweight Gary Balletto Jr. (1-1) aims for his second consecutive win when he faces Watertown, N.Y., vet Montoyia Swilling (0-3). The 21-year-old Balletto Jr. lost his professional debut in August of 2015, but rebounded with a win over Cruz Johnson at “CES MMA 33,” submitting his opponent with a heel hook in the opening round.

Norwood, Mass., featherweight Ruso Khubejashvili (2-2) looks to snap a two-fight losing streak when he faces Hollis, N.H., vet Dylan Lockard (1-0). Khubejashvili stepped up to face then unbeaten Kyle Bochniak, now an Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) contender, at “CES MMA 26” in 2014 and hasn’t fought since while Lockard scored his lone win over New Yorker Mak Kelleher on the preliminary card of “CES MMA 37.”

Looking to build on his pro debut win at “CES MMA 38,” Milford, Mass., bantamweight Kris Moutinho (1-0) returns Nov. 23rd to battle Michael Karam (0-1) of New Hartford, N.Y.; while fellow Milford bantamweight Richard Santiago (2-0) puts his unbeaten record on the line against Quebec native James Mancini (2-2) just 19 days after beating Devin Pilkington at “CES MMA 39” in Plymouth.

Rounding out the stacked “CES MMA 40” fight card, Pawtucket, R.I., bantamweight Joe Reverdes (2-3) returns for the first time in more than two years to battle newcomer Rich Hazard of Fort Wayne, Indiana (by way of Providence). Reverdes last fought on the undercard of “CES MMA 24,” scoring a knockout win over Randy Campbell.

American fighters Lee Morrison & Josh Rettinghouse to bolster already loaded M-1 Challenge 73: Battle of Narts

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (November 9, 2016) – The already loaded M-1 Challenge 73: Battle of Narts card has been bolstered by the M-1 Global announcement that two American fighters, Lee “American Bulldog” Morrison and “The Finisher” Josh Rettinghouse, have been added to the 2016 season-ending event December 9th in Ingushetia, Russia.

A super showdown between M-1 Challenge middleweight champion Ramazan Emeev (14-3-0, M-1: 8-1-0) and KO artist specialist Anatoly Tokov (24-2-0, M-1: 9-1-0) will headline M-1 Challenge 73: Battle of Narts in a battle of elite Russian fighters.

In the co-feature, M-1 Challenge featherweight champion Ivan “Buki” Buchinger (31-4-0, M-1: 6-0-0), fighting out of Slovakia, defends his title belt against undefeated Russian challenger Magomed Idrisov (5-0-0, M-1: 5-0-0).

M-1 Challenge 73 will be streamed live from Ingushetia in high definition on www.M1Global.TV. Viewers will be able to watch the preliminary fights and main card by logging on to register at www.M1Global.TV. Fans may watch all the action on their computers, as well as on Android and Apple smart phones and tablets.

Morrison (15-7-0, M-1: 2-4-0) and Rettinghouse (13-4-0, M-1: 1-0-0) are both fighting out of the state of Washington.

Morrison faces undefeated Russian prospect Moysar Evoloev (5-0-0, M-1: 5-0-0) in a fight contested at a 140-pounds (63.5 kilograms) catchweight. Morrison is a grappler (see photo below with him in top position) who defeated current M-1 Challenge bantamweight title-holder Pavel Vitruk by decision at M-1 Challenge 58.

Fighting at home in Ingushetia, Evloev is also a grappler who is coming off a first-round knockout of Alexander Krupenkin this past May at M-1 Challenge 66 (pictured below).

Rettinghouse, the King of the Cage champion, takes on Sergey Morozov (6-1-0, M-1: 3-1-0) in a bantamweight with future title implications for the winner.

A submission master who has a strong Brazilian Ju-Jitsu background, Rettinghouse is coming off his successful M-1 Global debut this past May at M-1 Challenge 66, in which Rettinghouse stopped Vadim Zhloboch in the opening round due to an injury.

Morozov, fighting out of Kazakhstan, is an outstanding striker and well-rounded MMA fighter. He was on the wrong end of the M-1 Challenge 68 Fight of the Night last July in a loss by decision to Rafael Dias.

At M-1 Challenge 59, Morozov (pictured below) was awarded the Knockout of the Night award for his demolishing of Andy Young a year ago July.

An impressive victory will position the Rettinghouse-Morozov winner for a potential M-1 Challenge bantamweight title fight with defending champion Vitruk.

Two of northeast’s reigning kings of MMA join forces for an unforgettable event in America’s Hometown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Nov. 2nd, 2016) — For years, Cage Titans FC and CES MMA have run neck-and-neck as two of the premier mixed martial arts promotions in the northeast.

Cage Titans has developed an incredibly deep talent pool of up-and-coming amateur fighters, many of whom have starred on past CES MMA events, while CES MMA has earned its reputation as a gateway to the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) with help from its relationship with AXS TV, which will extend into 2017, as announced by the network earlier this week.

The two promotions had always talked about running an event in association with one another, but it never made sense until now. CES MMA recently had another TV date added to its 2016 slate and Cage Titans had the venue, hence the concept behind “CES MMA 39,” which takes place Friday night at Memorial Hall in Plymouth, Mass., Cage Titans’ home base where it’s sold out its last 12 events.

Friday’s event features 11 bouts — eight professional, three amateur — with the preliminary card beginning at 7 p.m. ET and the AXS TV Fights televised main card beginning at 9.

“When this opportunity presented itself, it made perfect sense,” Cage Titans owner and matchmaker Mike Polvere said. “It was the right place, right time.”

It was a no-brainer as well for CES MMA, which had hoped to promote a second event in Massachusetts before the end of the year after making its Bay State debut in Beverly in April with a sold-out show at the North Shore Music Theatre.

“We were all in,” said CES MMA CEO Jimmy Burchfield Jr. “Mike does an incredible job. A lot of the CES fighters initially made a name for themselves at Cage Titans FC. This will be a night of unforgettable action and the start of things to come!”

Friday’s event features the best from both promotions. Cage Titans is also running its next event the following night, “Cage Titans 31,” also from Memorial Hall, which had been planned long before “CES MMA 39,” so Polvere took some of the top names from that event and moved them up one night for the opportunity to fight on the AXS TV platform.

Among them are Abington, Mass., standouts Manny Bermudez (7-0, 1 KO), who previously fought on AXS TV when he was featured on “CES MMA 32,” and brothers Peter Barrett (6-0, 5 KOs) and Max Barrett (3-0, 2 KOs), and Milford, Mass., flyweight Remo Cardarelli (6-4), in addition to Lawrence, Mass., vet Wilfredo Santiago (6-3, 5 KOs), who faces 11-time CES MMA vet Chuck O’Neil (17-8, 6 KOs) of Bourne, Mass., in the main event.

Bermudez, a featherweight, faces 25-fight vet Saul Almeida (18-7, 1 KO) of Framingham, Mass.; Peter Barrett puts his unbeaten record on the line in a featherweight bout against undefeated Clearwater, Fla., native Jeremy Davis (3-0, 1 KO); his younger brother, Max, faces Cage Titans bantamweight vet Dan Dubuque (3-1) of Waterbury, Conn., and Cardarelli faces Josh Ricci (2-0) of Whitesville, N.Y.

“It made sense for us to take our more established pros, like Manny, Peter, Max, and give them that nationwide exposure on national TV,” Polvere said. “CES has done a great job of showcasing the best talent on the east coast and it’s a great opportunity for Cage Titans to offer up some of our up-and-comers.

“They’re well-known, household names to our audience, and to the Massachusetts audience, but now here is their opportunity to get that exposure on a national level, a chance to spread their wings a little bit. CES has established itself as the staple for getting to the UFC for east coast fighters. With Manny, Peter, Wilfredo and others, we feel they have the talent to be there.”

CES MMA’s reputation as a “gateway” to the UFC began primarily when Boston’s John “Doomsday” Howard dominated the regional circuit under the promotional guidance of CES MMA and earned a second stint with the UFC. Since then, other regional fighters have carved their path to the UFC through CES MMA, including Tateki Matsuda, Rob Font, Joey Gomez, Dominique Steele, Kyle Bochniak, Charles Rosa and others.

The co-promotion between CES MMA and Cage Titans also shows the tremendous depth of talent in the northeast, which continues to grow as CES MMA prepares for another full slate of AXS TV broadcasts in 2017, starting in late January.

“We have 20 fights scheduled for Saturday and 11 with the CES card. The east coast is a hot bed for MMA,” Polvere said. “We have fighters from Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York and all the way up to Maine and New Hampshire on these cards, and, with the CES portion, from every further.

“At Cage Titans, we have a deep talent pool and with the blossoming of the sport of MMA, it’s only growing. The number of new people in this sport is growing. What’s interesting now is kids growing up are training MMA. In the early days, most MMA fighters were kids who wrestled in high school and picked up the sport when it became popular when they were 25. Now kids are starting to train as early as nine years old. It’s been a fun evolution the last couple of years.”

Tickets for “CES MMA 39” are priced at $45.00, $55.00, $75.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com or www.cagetix.com or by phone at 401-724-2253/2254. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

“CES MMA 39” also features Sandwich, Mass., welterweight Bobby Flynn (6-3, 1 KO), fresh off his win over Kevin Horowitz at “CES MMA 36,” battling unbeaten Crofton, Md., native Micah Terrill (6-0, 5 KOs) and Quincy, Mass., light heavyweight Mike Rodriguez (5-1, 3 KOs) facing New Hampshire’s Kevin Haley (5-3, 2 KOs), both on the main card, while Connor Barry (1-0) of Holbrook, Mass., faces lightweight Anthony Giachina (1-0) of Selden, N.Y., on the preliminary card.

“CES MMA 39” also features two amateur bouts; Charles Bonnar faces Zach Fritz-Kill and Joe Mikolinksi battles Shane Brady.

Hard work, sacrifice pays off for rising star Rodriguez

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Nov. 1st, 2016) — Mike Rodriguez doesn’t worry about what song is playing during his cage walk, how his shorts look, or any other ancillary details beyond his control once those camera lights begin to shine on fight night.

The task at hand is simple: Get in the cage, get the win, and live to fight another day.

“We just go out there and do work,” says the Quincy, Mass., light heavyweight. “It’s showbiz, but we’re not trying to be the Kardashians.”

In the world of mixed martial arts, where nothing’s staged or embellished for the cameras once the bell rings, the 27-year-old Rodriguez (5-1, 3 KOs) might be the sport’s next reality star.

For the second time in less than two months, Rodriguez will fight on national television when he faces New Hampshire vet Kevin Haley (5-3, 2 KOs) on the main card of “CES MMA 39” Friday, Nov. 4th, 2016 from Memorial Hall in Plymouth, Mass., which airs live on AXS TV’s AXS TV Fights and is co-promoted by CES MMA in association with Cage Titans FC.

The AXS TV platform is perfect for a fighter like Rodriguez, one who will fight anyone, anywhere at any given time. Having grown up in the historic Dorchester neighborhood of Boston before moving to Quincy, Rodriguez worked for every penny as a teenager just so he could afford the mat fees at his gym and now the sacrifice is paying off as he continues to make noise in the northeast. After struggling with the weight cut in his last fight, Rodriguez will fight Haley at 205 pounds Friday.

“I don’t want to get into something just to say, ‘I once did that.’ I want to be a champion,” Rodriguez said. “I want to fight at the highest level possible. This is not something where I want to one day sit and tell my grandkids, ‘I was good at that once.’

“I want to build a legacy that the whole world knows. That’s what motivates me.”

Though he grew up with a brother who boxed as an amateur, Rodriguez never considered fighting until an inadvertent dust-up with a would-be “bully” back in early 2007 who he bumped shoulders with in the hallway at high school. The other student thought Rodriguez took a swing at him, so he tried to retaliate.

“I knocked him out with the two-piece,” Rodriguez said. “He was bleeding all over the floor.”

Naturally, Rodriguez got suspended, but the teacher who separated him from his first knockout victim later contacted him outside of school and introduced him to the now-defunct Boston Muay Thai Academy in Dorchester, where Rodriguez could unleash his aggression without consequences.

“I didn’t even know what MMA was,” Rodriguez admitted.

The rest, as they say, is history; Rodriguez “fell in love” with the sport, but neither he or his mother could afford the extra $135 per month for membership fees, so Rodriguez got a job working weekends at Burger King. Every penny earned went toward paying his gym dues.

“I didn’t spend a dime on anything else,” Rodriguez said. “I committed myself, I really did, and it all paid off in the end.”

While Rodriguez wasn’t the type of teenager who roamed the streets or hung with the wrong crowd in high school – he says he’s had the same group of friends for the past 20 years – he admits MMA kept him in a safe place during his most impressionable years and kept him away from any potential outside influences.

Once the Boston Muay Thai Academy closed, Rodriguez took his talents to Best Way Jiu-Jitsu in Quincy, which is now known as Trifecta Martial Arts And Fitness. He made his professional debut in 2014 with a win over Ralph Johnson and has rebounded from his first and only loss to Pat McCrohan at “CES MMA XXXII” with three consecutive wins, including his second-round submission victory over the highly-touted John Poppie on the AXS TV main card of “CES MMA 38” at Foxwoods Resort Casino.

He spent nearly two years away from the sport following his second career win, which coincided with his short-lived move to Arizona, where his wife worked as a travel nurse while he gained invaluable experience training at Apex MMA in Tucson. The two returned to Quincy a year later before his wife gave birth to their first child, who is now 22 months old.

All of Rodriguez’s wins have come by either submission or knockout with the loss to McCrohan being the only fight that went the distance. He’s made MMA his No. 1 priority, mostly at the behest of his early mentors at the BMTA in Dorchester, who taught him there’s no way to enjoy any real success in this sport without giving it everything you have.

Now that he’s training out of Lauzon’s MMA in nearby South Easton, he’s had the opportunity to learn from the likes of Joe Lauzon, Scott Proctor and Tom Egan, all of whom starred at one point or another for the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) and are used to the spotlight Rodriguez is now facing as a main card fighter.

“They always told me, ‘This is not a sport you want to half-ass,'” Rodriguez said. “I wanted to do it, and the more I started doing it, the more I fell in love with it.”

Tickets for “CES MMA 39” are priced at $45.00, $55.00, $75.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com or www.cagetix.com or by phone at 401-724-2253/2254. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

“CES MMA 39” features eight action-packed bouts, including the main event showdown between East Bridgewater, Mass., middleweight Chuck O’Neil (17-8, 6 KOs) and Lawrence, Mass., vet Wilfredo Santiago (6-3, 5 KOs), and a featherweight battle between 25-fight vet Saul Almeida (18-7, 1 KO) of Framingham, Mass., and Abington prospect Manny Bermudez (7-0, 1 KO), who puts his unbeaten record on the line.

Also on the main card, Cage Titans vet Peter Barrett (6-0, 5 KOs) of Abington puts his unbeaten record on the line in a featherweight bout against undefeated Clearwater, Fla., native Jeremy Davis (3-0, 1 KO). In the flyweight division, Milford, Mass., vet Remo Cardarelli (6-4) faces Josh Ricci (2-0) of Whitesville, N.Y., and Stoughton, Mass., bantamweight Max Barrett (3-0, 2 KOs) returns to face Matt Almy (2-1) of Binghamton, N.Y., both on the main card.

Sandwich, Mass., welterweight Bobby Flynn (6-3, 1 KO), fresh off his win over Kevin Horowitz at “CES MMA 36,” battles unbeaten Crofton, Md., native Micah Terrill (6-0, 5 KOs) on the main card while Connor Barry (1-0) of Holbrook, Mass., faces lightweight Anthony Giachina (1-0) of Selden, N.Y., on the preliminary card.

“CES MMA 39” also features two amateur bouts; Charles Bonnar faces Zach Fritz-Kill and Joe Mikolinksi battles Shane Brady.

Move turns ideas into results Mexico vs. Colombia competition Provides platform for athletes

MONTE CARLO, Monaco (November 1, 2016)- The Mexican MMA Commission (COMEXAMM) and Colombian MMA Federation (FECODEAMM), respectively led by Hector Molina and Jaime Arturo Pena, have partnered to provide a bi-national undercard in lieu of the recent cancellation of the inaugural World MMA Association (WMMAA) Pan-American Division Championships due to problems associated with the hosting Chile Federation.

The Mexico vs. Colombia fights will be on the undercard of the November 18th Combato Extremo event, promoted by Ubaldo Marroquin, at Auditorio National, Monterrey, Mexico. Mexican and Colombian fighters who were supposed to compete in the aforementioned WMMAA Pan-American Division Championships can now have the opportunity to be in action.

Molina has been instrumental in WMMAA Pan-American Division development since 2014 as president of the Mexican Commission of MMA, as well as the Pan-American Director of the Regulatory Committee.

“That first year,” Molina said, “we are focused on identifying the best parts of he WMMAA regulatory programs – its people, programs, systems and processes – then quickly and effectively integrating these parts into a stronger centralized continental organization partner with improved, more useful, more impactful systems and resources. When you bring together multiple organizations there are real differences that need to be addressed, including cultural, and business operations, as well as geographic differences.”

Molina and his leadership team studied the WMMAA systems, maintained what successfully worked, and improved other aspects to build a new network. They retained top talent and aligned them with COMEXAMM’s bold culture, also adding some new people in areas perceived as non-optical to support business. Ultimately, Molina bold a team that embraced core values and visions for regulatory that was instilled in him by mentors and years of experience.

“We started with the premise that we hire the best people in the industry; that we train them well, and offer them cutting-edge resources and skills. We empower our people to make smart decisions and, most importantly, we trust our people key members like Gustavo Cantu. This trust is critical to our success. When we empower and trust people, they want to take ownership, not only for results, but for how we get our results.”

One of Molina’s first accomplishments at WMMAA has been the restructuring and realignment of the rules and regulations committee to mirror the company’s operating model. The Continental Rules and Regulations Committee was built on the principle guard railing the unstoppable growth of MMA and given the dynamic nature of WMMAA.

“Moves like these, from leaders like Hector Molina, are the ones that many organization would dream about in moments of crisis,” WMMAA Pan-American Division president Tomas Yu remarked, “giving a new definition to what it means to be part of the WMMAA family.”

The WMMAA Pan-American Division is a leader of a new industry category – growth Federation – powered by a committee to growth, focusing on MMA as a sport area leadership, in addition to dedication to operational excellence, investment in research and development innovation, and a strong focus on its members.

To maintain its position as an industry leader, WMMAA Pan-American Division practices what it calls, “Living Bold.” This culture embraces five principles: building bridges, powering ideas, acting fast, driving results, and always doing what is right. Molina and his team create regulatory strategies, systems, and programs that embody this culture.

“As opposed to being a back-room function that primarily creates policies and performs audits, my teams are aligned with the business units and are in the field with them daily,” Molina explained. “We advise in real time and proactively collaborate in strategy and planning meetings so our business can come up with innovative ideas, act fast, and quickly drive results.”

“My team knows that I am a bit of a regulatory geek when it comes to our work. It’s extremely exciting from a strategic perspective because it allows us to become a more valuable partner to the colleagues who run the business. We’ve always had strong, productive and active strategies. And we always will! By continuously challenging the status quo, asking ourselves how we can do things differently, and ultimately advancing our regulatory program, we will make a meaningful contribution to helping the WMMAA be bold, act fast and power ideas.”

Barrett brothers ready for AXS TV debut Friday in Plymouth

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Oct. 31st, 2016) — There’s little hesitation from either Peter Barrett or Max Barrett when the Abington, Mass., brothers are asked why they continue to step foot inside the cage, putting in 50-hour work weeks on top of their grueling, two-a-day training sessions.

The desire to be world champions, no matter the platform or where this crazy journey takes them, is what drives them to be better than everyone else they stand toe-to-toe with.

“Wherever I go,” Peter said,” my goal is to crush it and destroy the opposition.”

The Barretts, who both star on the televised main card of “CES MMA 39” Friday night in Plymouth, are accustomed to the fighting lifestyle; they grew up in a family of 15 and admittedly used to “beat the snot out of each other” when they were younger, according to Peter, the older of the two.

Their parents, who had three children, including their other brother, Cole, divorced when they were young. Their father wound up with seven children with their stepmom, who already had a daughter. Their stepfather had four children of his own before he met their mother, hence the extended family of 15. Many of the stepbrothers and stepsisters were older, so the Barretts felt like they were raised around a lot of “aunts” and “uncles,” not just siblings.

Suffice to say, the Barrett household was competitive, especially amongst the three brothers.

“It was always about who could do what better, or who could do it faster,” Peter said. “That’s just how we were raised.”

Years later, the Barretts are still at it, still chasing that dream of becoming world champions. So far, they’re on the right path. Fighting for Cage Titans FC, which will co-promote Friday’s show at Memorial Hall with CES MMA, the Barrett brothers enter “CES MMA 39” a combined 9-0 with 7 KOs.

Both brothers face the toughest tests of their careers Friday as they make their network television debuts on AXS TV’s AXS TV Fights, which begins its broadcast at 9 p.m. ET. Peter (6-0, 5 KOs) battles 3-0 Clearwater, Fla., featherweight Jeremy Davis while Max (3-0, 2 KOs) faces bantamweight Dan Dubuque (3-1) of Waterbury, Conn.

“We’ve been waiting for an opportunity like this to arrive, and now we have it,” Max said. “It’s definitely a step in the right direction.

“We have some family on the west coast that so far really hasn’t been able to see us fight other than what’s been posted on social media, so it’s really good to get that exposure. Our friends and family are supportive of us no matter what.”

Added Peter: “This is pretty sweet. I can’t say enough awesome things about this opportunity.”

What’s even more impressive about the Barretts, aside from their undefeated records and quick rise in the northeast, is the dedication to their craft despite living hectic lifestyles outside of the cage. Their manager, Tyson Chartier, calls it “mind blowing,” two relative up-and-comers training like Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) vets while working full-time jobs.

Thankfully, their work schedule allows them to be flexible with their training. They both work for a company called FBA Stores, founded by a family friend based out of nearby Weymouth, which, in a nutshell, helps entrepreneurs and business owners develop Amazon profiles and sell their products online for a larger profit.

The work weeks are long, but their schedule affords them the opportunity to work on their strength and conditioning early in the morning, put in a full day of work and then hit the mats at night.

Max runs “three or four” Amazon accounts for the owner of the company, sending emails day to day and filling orders, all of which adds up to $4 to $5 million in sales per year between the owner’s two stores (FBA has a facility just north of Vegas as well).

“It’s a really good gig and a unique niche that we’re in,” says Peter, who owns a degree in business management and marketing. “It just kind of worked out for us. I worked a couple of dead-end jobs out of college, but always stayed in contact and was networking. He needed someone new at his company, and I was ready to leave the job I was at.”

Balancing both careers hasn’t always been easy. The brothers soon learned that just because they could fit everything they needed to do into a 24-hour day didn’t mean it was beneficial to their overall success. They found themselves sluggish when they’d hit their second training session, mostly from a lack of sleep. They eventually linked up with Norton, Mass., strength coach Mike Perry, who has helped them establish a more manageable routine.

“I started with him about two or three years ago,” Max said, “and it took a while to get used to what he wanted us to do, but I feel great. We learned it’s not always the best thing to go balls to the wall with training between your strength and conditioning and the work you put in at the gym, especially working a full-time job. It definitely wears on you.”

“Over the last couple of camps, we’ve come to learn how important sleep is,” Peter added. “You can feel like a tough guy working out with no sleep, then you run into an injury, or an infection from not sleeping enough.

“We work eight hours, run home, change gym bags, then go out and train a couple of hours at night. If we’re on point, we can train from 6 to 9 at night on top of our two hours in the morning. What’s really cool is we get to the gym early and we just drill, drill, drill. It’s awesome because we’re both on the same mission and the same path.”

The competition between one another, which began as kids, continues to this day. The Barretts are both aiming to be world champions and they’ve managed to help each other along the way despite different fight styles, sharing advice in and out of the cage and driving one another to be successful.

“Normally, it comes in the form of, ‘Hey, you’re a fucking idiot. Don’t do that!'” Peter said. “It’s just constructive criticism. We’re always giving each other feedback.”

Max admits he’s the more “laid back” of the two, both in real life and inside the cage, but he and his brother have displayed similar knockout power; Peter is Cage Titans’ all-time leader in career knockouts as he enters Friday’s fight against the dangerous Davis, who is coming off a first-round knockout win at “Cage Titans 29” in June.

Having fought on the same fight card before, the Barretts are used to the camaraderie and competition and actually prefer to be featured together on the same night because of the support from family and friends. On Friday, the stakes are higher than ever with a much larger audience getting their first glimpse of what New England’s toughest fight family is all about.

“We’ve done it before, so it’s just another day for us,” Peter said. “We’re excited about the opportunity.”

Also on the main card, Quincy, Mass., light heavyweight Mike Rodriguez (5-1, 3 KOs) returns following an impressive network television debut at “CES MMA 38” in September to face New Hampshire’s Kevin Haley (5-3, 2 KOs) and Milford, Mass., flyweight Remo Cardarelli (6-4) faces Josh Ricci (2-0) of Whitesville, N.Y.

Sandwich, Mass., welterweight Bobby Flynn (6-3, 1 KO), fresh off his win over Kevin Horowitz at “CES MMA 36,” battles unbeaten Crofton, Md., native Micah Terrill (6-0, 5 KOs) on the main card while Connor Barry (1-0) of Holbrook, Mass., faces lightweight Anthony Giachina (1-0) of Selden, N.Y., on the preliminary card.

“CES MMA 39” also features two amateur bouts; Charles Bonnar faces Zach Fritz-Kill and Joe Mikolinksi battles Shane Brady.

Almeida confident he can subdue rising star Bermudez at CES MMA 39

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Oct. 28th, 2016) — When Saul Almeida looks at his upcoming opponent, Manny Bermudez, he sees a younger version of himself, a confident, borderline cocky, up-and-comer with an aura of invincibility due to his early success.

Almeida (18-7, 1 KO), the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist who fights and trains out of Framingham, Mass., also won his first seven pro fights, just like the 22-year-old Bermudez (7-0, 1 KO) has done since turning pro last summer.

The parallels are striking; Almeida was 21 at the time, undefeated and untested, until he stepped into the cage with wiry, 33-year-old vet Pete Jeffrey on the undercard of CES MMA’s inaugural event in 2010. It was a humbling experience for Almeida, who got submitted via guillotine choke in the third and final round for the first loss of his pro career.

Almeida is now 27 as he enters his 26th pro fight next Friday at Memorial Hall in Plymouth, Mass., on the main card of “CES MMA 39,” but he’s arguably more experienced now than Jeffrey was when they faced one another six years ago. Will history repeat itself Nov. 4th? Will the young, brash Bermudez get humbled by the cagey veteran Almeida?

“Why not?” Almeida said. “If he’s feeling like he’s the next big thing, he better be ready for that train to fall soon. He’s not going to go undefeated his whole life.”

The Almeida-Bermudez fight, one of the more compelling bouts on the “CES MMA 39” main card, is one of seven fights airing live on AXS TV’s AXS TV Fights telecast, which begins at 9 p.m. ET and is promoted by CES MMA in association with Cage Titans FC.

Almeida returns to the CES MMA cage for the first time in more than two years, but for the ninth time in his pro career. The lanky, 6-foot-3 featherweight, nicknamed “The Spider,” is one of the region’s most polarizing fighters; though seemingly soft-spoken and well-liked by his peers, Almeida has drawn the ire of others in the northeast for his frustrating method of overwhelming opponents, a simple, yet effective, style in which he relies more on his ground game than his striking.

Often categorized as “lay and pray,” Almeida’s approach unnerves his opponents to the point where they attempt to take his head off before he even has a chance to get them to the ground, but it typically backfires. Almeida is adept at drawing his opponents into his web — perhaps explaining the nickname — while controlling the pace of the fight on his terms.

History notwithstanding, “The Spider” suggests his style is more than just “lay and pray” — “I like to get in a fight,” he says — which is why he’s even tried his hand at pro boxing eight times and has gone the distance in seven of those fights.

Regardless, Almeida remains the one guy everyone wants to fight. Why? Almeida says it could be a number of things, including his relationship with Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) Interim Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo, who’s become one of his top training partners. Almeida tagged along on Aldo’s world tour in advance of his title bout against Conor McGregor at UFC 194 and even served as his translator with the media.

“These guys all want to fight me for some reason. I guess if they fight me they get a little more attention because I’ve fought everywhere,” says Almeida, a veteran of Bellator and the World Series of Fighting (WSOF).

“They don’t like me for the stuff I do. Even if I lose, I still win, so they hate on that. They don’t want to see people doing well. They think, ‘I’m fighting Jose Aldo’s training partner,’ so they want to get a little bit of the shine. It is what it is. I’m here. I’ll fight anyone if it makes sense.”

The bout makes perfect sense for both sides, especially since the high-flying Bermudez is coming off a win over one of Almeida’s other training partners, Rodrigo Almeida, in August. A post-fight scuffle in the cage between Bermudez and Almeida’s cornerman, Bruno Dias — a “misunderstanding,” according to both parties — has set the stage for what could be the most memorable bout on the “CES MMA 39” main card.

Bermudez has finished six of his seven opponents, all in the first round, and isn’t worried about Almeida’s experience playing a factor once the bell rings next Friday.

“All this talk about experience, the pace he puts up isn’t a fighting pace,” said the Abington, Mass., native. “It’s a sparring pace and it’ll work against him.

“I’ll give it to him, he’s trained with Aldo, who’s one of the best in the world, and he’s fought everyone — [Calvin] Kattar, [Matt] Bessette, [Chris] Foster, a lot of really good guys locally — but I’m just not a fan of how he fights. That’s my biggest gripe. He’s doesn’t have any punching power, no finishing ability. He’s just a grinder.”

Thankful for the lessons he’s learned from traveling with Aldo, “The Spider” considers himself a more well-rounded fighter and remains unfazed by Bermudez’s record and bravado.

“Just getting to train with him and stay with him for a while, seeing the mentality of a UFC champion — how they train, how they think, the lifestyle — has helped me a lot,” Almeida said. “In Brazil, it’s like a jungle. Sparring is pretty much like a fight, so I’ll be ready.”

The opposing styles make for an interesting dynamic. The outcome will likely hinge on whichever fighter can impose his will. Almeida is a veteran of network television, but this will be just the second fight for Bermudez on AXS TV. He exceled in his TV debut at “CES MMA 32,” submitting Evan Parker in 1 minute, 43 seconds via rear-naked choke.

“After I fought for CES, I had a ton of people who wanted to friend me on Facebook and talk to me about the fight,” Bermudez said. “A lot more people know me now than before. It’s kind of crazy.”

His popularity will continue to skyrocket if he can avoid falling into the same trap Almeida fell into six years ago and score another big win against an established veteran.

“I feel like he thinks he’s going to grab onto me and I’m going to freak and gas myself out and then he’ll out-point me,” Bermudez said. “That can’t be your game plan. Clearly, it’s been working for him, but I just don’t think it’ll play out that way against me.”

Added Almeida: “He really hasn’t been in a tough fight yet. It’s just going to be me against him in the middle of the cage.”

Tickets for “CES MMA 39” are priced at $45.00, $55.00, $75.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com or www.cagetix.com or by phone at 401-724-2253/2254. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

“CES MMA 39” features eight action-packed bouts, including the main event showdown between East Bridgewater, Mass., middleweight Chuck O’Neil (17-8, 6 KOs) and Lawrence, Mass., vet Wilfredo Santiago (6-3, 5 KOs).

Also on the main card, Quincy, Mass., light heavyweight Mike Rodriguez (5-1, 3 KOs) returns following an impressive network television debut at “CES MMA 38” in September to face New Hampshire’s Kevin Haley (5-3, 2 KOs) and Cage Titans vet Peter Barrett (6-0, 5 KOs) of Abington puts his unbeaten record on the line in a featherweight bout against Clearwater, Fla., native Jeremy Davis (3-0, 1 KO), also undefeated.

Santiago prepared for fight of his life against veteran O’Neil

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Oct. 27th, 2016) — When most fighters say they “live in the gym,” it’s merely a figure of speech, a way to show their peers just how hard they’re working.

For middleweight Wilfredo Santiago (6-3, 5 KOs), this commonly used expression is his reality, not just a clever euphemism. The transplanted Lawrence, Mass., native actually lives in his gym 2,200 miles west in Albuquerque, N.M.

“I have a room in the gym and everything,” Santiago said. “My address is the gym.”

Suffice to say, the 33-year-old Santiago has made plenty of sacrifices to ensure his career heads in the right direction. The hard work and dedication has paid off in the form of a nationally-televised headliner on the main card of “CES MMA 39” next Friday, Nov. 4th, 2016 against established veteran Chuck O’Neil (17-8, 6 KOs) at the historic Memorial Hall in Plymouth, Mass.

The O’Neil-Santiago middleweight main event is one of seven fights on the televised main card of AXS TV’s AXS TV Fights telecast, which begins 9 p.m. ET and is promoted by CES MMA in association with Cage Titans FC. Next Friday will be Santiago’s network television debut while O’Neil takes center stage on AXS TV for the sixth time.

“I can’t say enough. I’m blessed,” Santiago said. “All those mistakes a lot of fighters make, I made those in the beginning of my career. I took some time to myself due to injuries and did some soul searching. I’ve been taking it one fight at a time, training my ass off.

“I’m ready,” he continued. “No disrespect to Chuck, but I believe in myself 100 percent.”

A year ago, after winning a title at “Cage Titans 26” in Plymouth, Santiago decided he wanted to branch out and expand his training, so he reached out to gyms from all over the country. A few replied, including the Jackson Wink MMA Academy in Albuquerque, co-owned by Greg Jackson and widely considered one of the sport’s top training facilities.

The legendary Jackson has trained the likes of former Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm, former UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones and ex-welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, among others. Santiago decided to pack his bags and head west, but the original plan was to stay for just six months. The move soon became permanent as Santiago realized the benefits of training full-time at Jackson Wink, both in and out of the cage.

“It’s a dream come true,” Santiago said. “To train everyday with some of the best in the world, that alone builds confidence.

“One of the biggest aspects to being a fighter is being able to handle yourself outside of the cage. I’m an old-school guy. My mom and dad taught us morals and values, and to see how these champions carry themselves, it just makes you want to do better.”

Relocating more than 2,000 miles from his hometown hasn’t been easy. Santiago left a lot of close friends and family behind, including his ill mother, but knowing this could be his last chance to build off his current three-fight win streak and take his career to the next level made the decision much easier.

“It takes a lot to do this,” he said, “but great sacrifices bring great rewards.”

The climb back to the top for Santiago has been slow and steady, but equally rewarding. After losing to Darrius Heylinger in 2013, his third loss in four fights, Santiago suffered a torn labrum that forced him to take time off. He wound up sitting out for two and a half years, not only to heal his shoulder, but to take a mental break as well.

He returned in July of 2015 with a knockout win over Ralph Johnson and has now won his last three fights as he steps up from the welterweight division to middleweight to face the red-hot O’Neil, who’s won his last two fights at 185 on AXS TV.

“None of us ever go into a camp 100 percent, but, overall, all the major injury issues I had in the past are behind me,” Santiago said. “Training-wise, things couldn’t be better. My body is still fresh. I haven’t taken a lot of beatings like some of these other guys have. Everything is great.”

O’Neil, a Bourne, Mass., native who now fights out of East Bridgewater, enters next Friday with newfound confidence since rebounding from his loss to Daniel Vizcaya last October after winning his last two fights. Outsiders questioned whether or not he made the right decision jumping from 170 to 185, and others have criticized his decision to moonlight as a professional wrestler, suggesting it’s affected his performance in the cage, but O’Neil remains as steady and consistent as ever.

The former UFC vet makes his 12th appearance with CES MMA next Friday and he does so less than 20 miles from his hometown, the site of his first victory in an MMA title fight nearly eight years to the date; a former CES MMA title-holder, O’Neil also won the Reality Fighting Welterweight Championship Nov. 1st, 2008 at Memorial Hall.

“It’s pretty crazy when you think about it. I’m an old man now,” said the 31-year-old O’Neil. “Back then, I was a young, scrappy kid trying to get by as the tough guy.

“I wouldn’t change anything for the world. There’s nothing better than getting in that cage and winning.”

While O’Neil has always eyed a potential return to the UFC, he’s carved a niche with CES MMA as an electrifying, hard-hitting middleweight who’s as precise at cutting promos as he is at finishing his opponents. The flashy, outspoken O’Neil enters next Friday’s fight with a definitive size advantage over his shorter, lighter opponent, who’s moving up in weight, but promises to maintain the same approach once the bell rings.

“[Santiago] is definitely a dangerous fighter,” O’Neil said. “He’s a game opponent. He throws a lot of heavy punches, big overhand rights, and he switches back and forth and likes to hop in and out, mostly in and out looking for that big shot.

“He’s fought taller guys before. He knocked out Ralph Johnson, but before that was having trouble with his range. But I’m not Ralph Johnson. Not at all. As [head coach] Diamond Dave [Keefe] says, I’m going to go out there and be the F-ing boss. I’m going to establish that and take control. If you go in there waiting on stuff, you’re going to get hit with things.”

O’Neil has found his comfort zone at 185, which means no more crazy weight-cuts leading up to fight night. Managing his weight and diet properly has helped O’Neil look and feel better when he enters the cage and it’s showed in his last two bouts, particularly in his fight against Dennis Olson in March when he fought three full rounds and never lost stamina, closing with a championship performance in the third and final round.

Now O’Neil returns to the site of some of his greatest achievements against a scrappy, underdog slugger with nothing to lose, perhaps a reflection of the fighter O’Neil used to be.

“Every fight, I feel stronger and stronger,” O’Neil said. “I’m not killing myself and I’m not burning muscle. I enter that cage on fight night feeling strong. I’m looking forward to this fight.”

Tickets for “CES MMA 39” are priced at $45.00, $55.00, $75.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com or www.cagetix.com or by phone at 401-724-2253/2254. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

“CES MMA 39” features eight action-packed bouts, including a featherweight showdown between 25-fight vet Saul Almeida (18-7, 1 KO) of Framingham, Mass., and Abington, Mass., prospect Manny Bermudez (7-0, 1 KO), who puts his unbeaten record on the line.

The 27-year-old Almeida is a veteran of several prominent organizations, including CES MMA, World Series of Fighting (WSOF) and Bellator Fighting Championships. The fight card is now complete with 11 bouts.

Bibiano Fernandes of Brazil is one of the most humble and honorable champions in the world and he is set to take on rising star Reece McLaren.”

36-year-old Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes of Brazil is the reigning ONE Bantamweight World Champion and widely considered one of the best bantamweights in the world. He made his promotional debut back in 2012 and captured the title in 2013, and has since then remained unbeaten inside the ONE Championship cage. A winner of his last 11 bouts, including three submission wins and two knockouts, Fernandes is set to defend his title against rising star, Reece McLaren.

25-year-old Reece “Lightning” McLaren is a Filipino-Australian professional mixed martial artist from Toowoomba, Australia. He made his ONE debut in 2015 with a spectacular submission victory over top bantamweight contender Mark Striegl, and then followed up that win with a unanimous decision over highly-regarded prospect Muin Gafurov. McLaren has showcased a tremendous striking arsenal paired with a robust grappling skill set in his career to date. In his next bout, he takes on the toughest test of his career against Bibiano Fernandes.

Leandro Ataides of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is set to return to the ONE Championship cage this December. The 30-year-old professional mixed martial artist owns a professional record of eight wins and three losses, with only two of Ataides’ victories reaching the final bell. 34-year-old fight veteran Mohamed “Flex” Ali is a professional mixed martial arts fighter who hails from Egypt. He owns a diverse 10-10 professional MMA record, which includes seven victories by stunning knockout. The well-travelled striker has competed in various countries in his MMA career.
