Despite setback, Cartagena on road to becoming Flyweight champion

Philadelphia (June 18) – Down but far from out. A term that has been used many times in many aspects of life but for 21 year-old Flyweight contender Miguel Cartagena of Philadelphia, it couldn’t be more true.

Back on April 24, Cartagena entered the ring for his bout with Timur Shailezov with a perfect record of 12-0. Cartagena had been improving with each performance and it was thought his bout with Shailezov would have been another solid victory.

Unfortunately Cartagena was hurt and dropped in the 1st round. He was never able to recover and was stopped in round three.

For many young fighters, that loss could have been a confidence and career killer. But Cartagena went back to the drawing board and is looking to resume what many have predicted for him and that is a path to the world championship.

Young Miguel will be back in action in July when he looks to get back on the pursuit of a world title.

“It’s a part of boxing, no excuses he was the better man tonight. I’ll be back stronger than ever. This is just a minor set back for a major comeback,” were Cartagena’s words after the TKO defeat.

Cartagena is set to make is return to the ring within 6 weeks. “I’ve had plenty of time to rest, recover and spend time with my family and friends, but I was back in the gym a week after my last fight,” Continued Cartagena.

His manager Mark Cipparone of Club 1957 Management see’s big things for Miguel’s future despite having a loss on his record, “We will take one fight at a time and build Miguel back up mentally to where he was before his last fight. When I see Miguel Cartagena, I see a future world champion. We have a great team, great trainers and a great support group for Miguel and all of my other boxers”.
