WBC PEOPLE’S CHAMPIONSHIP – WELTERWEIGHT – 10 ROUNDS

Adrien Broner (35-5-1, 24 KOs) vs. Blair Cobbs (17-1-1, 10 KOs)

Result: Cobbs wins via unanimous decision

Scorecards: 97-91, 96-93, 96-93

Cobbs on his victory: “It wasn’t easy. Even after I tracked him on that special shot that hurt him [Adrien Broner], he got up, he’s resilient, and he kept pressing forward. He even got a couple of good shots in. He got me with that right hand one time. Not too many times he landed, but when he did, he landed very well. But Blair “The Flair” prevails. I stay consistent on pressure with high, low, high, low. I make myself as unpredictable as possible.”

Cobbs on what is next: “I saw something on Instagram. Ryan Garcia was rooting for “AB”. That was hurtful because I thought we were boys. But get your girl out of DMs. It’s my time, it’s Blair “The Flair” Cobbs, the most exciting man in boxing and the People’s Champion. Woo!”

We’re going to go back to the drawing board and see what I can improve on. My team is happy and I’m happy with the win. I did my job. Fighting is just the show part. I see myself improving in camp. It was frustrating that he wasn’t throwing anything. Usually, we try to make our opponents fall into traps. I’m a smaller heavyweight. I did hurt him a few times, though.”

Hunter on what is next: “I would love to fight Oleksandr Usyk again at any weight. I’d fight him at any weight right now, even lightweight. QUOTES FROM THE TUESDAY, MAY 28, OPEN WORKOUT FEATURING ADRIEN “THE PROBLEM” BRONER AND BLAIR “THE FLAIR” COBBS

LAS VEGAS (May 29, 2024) – Ahead of Don King’s monumental “Fists of Fury” event taking place at the Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla., on Friday, June 7, Adrien “The Problem” Broner (35-4-1, 24 KOs) and Blair “The Flair” Cobbs (16-1-1, 10 KOs) participated in a media open workout in Las Vegas on Tuesday, May 28. Broner and Cobbs’ WBC People’s Championship bout marks Broner’s journey back to a world title opportunity, while Cobbs returns to the ring for the first time in nearly two years.

The fight card can be streamed Live on https://www.donking.com/ and trillertv.com at 6 PM EDT.

Here’s what the competitors in the highly anticipated featured bout had to say:

Adrien Broner:

“The way this boxing stuff goes, you never know what’s going to happen. They’re just giving out world titles. They’re going to give one of these YouTubers a title. I tip my hat to Errol Spence and Terrance Crawford; they’re doing their thing. Like I said before, my main focus is to become a world champion. All my life, I just wanted to be a world champion, and every time I won one, I cried tears. I’m pretty sure I’ll do the same thing when I win one again.”

“With me being on this side of my career and the way boxing is going right now, I thought, ‘Why not sign with Don King?’ Who wouldn’t want someone like Don King to promote them? It’s just greatness, and to have him a part of my story is just amazing. To be a world champion and to be under Don King will be amazing.”

“Terrance Crawford is the No. 1 fighter in the world right now for me. But if we’re talking who the main guy is in boxing? It’s Gervonta “Tank” Davis. Going to a “Tank” fight is not just going to a fight. It’s an event, and the whole world comes to see him. A lot of people want to see him lose, and a lot of people want to see him win.”

“My advice to the youngsters is to do what’s best for you. Make the decision that’s best for you because at the end of the day when your career is done and over with, they will be looking for the next up-and-coming boxer.”

Kenny Ellis, Broner’s Trainer:

“Things are going really well. He’s (Broner) so focused. Ever since he surrendered to us it’s been incredible. He’s shows up every day on time, he’s done everything we’ve asked him to do, and it’s going to show on June 7.”

“Cobbs is tough for the first half of the fight – kind of wild and some hard shots. But we’re better skilled and have been in there with tougher guys. It shouldn’t be a problem.”

“It was an honor to share the same stage as Don King. Broner and Don together have just been something else.”

Blair Cobbs:

“I can’t wait to have my hand raised on June 7. I’ve been patiently waiting for this moment for years, so there is no one who is more prepared than I am.”

“AB (Adrien Broner) is my toughest opponent. But, at the end of the day, I don’t know who is going to show up or what’s going to happen because I’ve never been this prepared for a fight. I’m very thankful for the team I have and my trainer Justin Gamber.”

“When he’s (Broner) been in there with someone who’s a little bit better, things get a little bit strange. He has to adapt because there is someone in his midst that has a bigger and stronger personality and energy.”

“Honestly, I’m just having a good time – I’m having a ball. I don’t think anything’s gotten too personal, and it’s kind of hard to get too personal. I’m a clown, he’s a clown, and that’s how we get down.”

Justin Gamber, Cobbs’ trainer:

“We are more than ready for this. This is our first fight together, but we’ve been working hard since February, day in and day out, and we’ve put in a lot of work for this camp.”

“The ring rust is there for me too. I took a break for a while after Caleb [Plant], and so this is my first fight back since 2021. It’s been a learning process for us, but we’re on the same page and look forward to getting into fight week now.”

“We haven’t thought about the future. Adrien Broner is a tough test and a four-time world champion, and for good reason. He’s a good fighter. I’m not getting caught up in that talk about he’s old or not in shape. I’m staying focused on him because, in order to get where we want to be after this fight, we have to focus on him first.”

Adrien Broner

“Now look at all this clown s—t and none of this clown s—t will work in the ring. People say I’m a clown but I’m a different type of clown. He’s (Cobbs) a clown in the circus. I’m “IT.” I’m some scary type of clown. It gets scary when you talk about me. That s—t isn’t going to work on me.”

“June 7, I want everyone to come out. This time I don’t need to say anything, he’s doing everything for me. I’m about to f—k this guy up. I look at him like Bill Haney if he was a boxer, no disrespect to Bill Haney. June 7 is doomsday and I’m training good. I’m training in Las Vegas with my little brother Tank (Davis). A lot of people thought I wouldn’t show up but I’m in shape and I can’t wait to put on a great performance. So, everyone come out and we’re about to get money. Let’s go Don, we got money to make.”

Blair Cobbs

“It’s none other than Blair “The Flair,” the most exciting man in boxing. I come out blazing like never before. You guys are going to see something that you’ve never seen before. Things that are going to happen to Broner are going to be things never seen before. You guys are going to see action-packed performances, and this is all that I am about. I’ve been born for this moment. I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. I’ve been looking for this moment for a long time. I’ve been begging for this moment for a long time. I’ve been praying for this moment for a long time. Thank you, Don King, because Don King is back in action. June 7, I’ve arrived.”

Noel Mikaelian

“First of all, thank you everyone for the attendance. I am really excited to fight at this beautiful location. Thank you, Don, for putting on this show. It will be a good fight. I’ll be defending my world title. I’m looking forward to bigger fights and this one is just like a training fight.”

“I’m not really much of a talker, I’m here to knock him out or he’s going to knock me out. And that’s it.”

Ian Green

“First and foremost, I want to thank God, my team, my trainers, and my management team. If you know me, you know I am a man of a few words. But one thing I will say, you’re looking at the No. 1 middleweight in the world. You’re looking at one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. You guys are probably looking at me like I am crazy. But every person who did amazing, legendary things was once looked at like they were crazy. So, on June 7, I am going to steal the show.”

Antonio Williams

“I want to thank everyone for coming out and thank you, Don King. I just can’t wait for June 7. I’m going to work. I’ve been grinding for this man. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity.”

Quotes from yesterday’s press conference and interviews:

BRONER: The real problem is they let Adrien Broner and Don King get together – that’s the real problem. I can tell you right now, I am not looking past this man, but I can tell you this – Adrien Broner will become world champion again.  And it will be under Don King.

There is bigger things to come, but the first is to take care of Billy.

Usually when people see Adrien Broner, there is usually something messed up coming behind him. So after I mess (looking at Hutchinson) you up I’m going to hire you because I can always use a good lawyer. Now that I know you’re a fighter, I know you will fight for me, in the courtroom.

HUTCHINSON: As previously stated, I am a licensed attorney. However, first and foremost, I am a fighter, and Adrien Broner is going to see that Friday night, and he’s going to have his hands full.  So I appreciate the offer for some work after the fight, and we can talk about that after, but make no mistake, I am going to do everything in the ring to take his head clean off his shoulders.

More HUTCHINSON

I am more confident than ever. We put in the preparation. We know what we need to do and we are going to execute on Friday. We want to make sure he remains uncomfortable at all times.

I am going to impose my will on Adrien Broner. I know I will have to deal with his power. He is a four-time world champion and a hall of fame caliber fighter for a reason, and I’m going to have to deal at that level.

I’ve trained and sparred with world champions so I won’t shy away from having to grind it out. I won’t be a deer in headlights. I’ve sparred with Devin Haney and given him everything he can handle. Six-rounds each in back to back days.

I have knockout power with both hands.

It is disrespectful that they are looking for a way to promote me outside of my fighting abilities, so my job on Friday is to make them respect my fighting ability. The reality is that I can fight.

They made a big mistake by allowing me this opportunity. I have scratched and clawed for everything I have achieved in my life.

When I was thirteen / fourteen years old I was having difficulty finding sparring partners. My trainer would go to the clubs and find grown men and ask if they would spar – “hey does anyone want to come and spar with this little white boy” – that how I got my sparring for years. I was sparring grown men. I’ve been fighting for a really long time.

As soon as I saw the photo of Adrien and Don at the table with all the money, I texted my manager and said “Get me that fight” and we got the word to the right people that I am ready and willing to take this fight. Then it happened.

Why did I want this fight? Because I know I could win. Styles make fights and I have the style to beat him. I expect to see a counter-puncher throwing three shots or more at a time. But there are also times when he gets complacent. We’ve studied him. We’ve studied the best Adrien Broner and I am expecting the best Adrien Broner.

Before Covid things seemed to be moving fast for my career. I was working with Mike Acri with some overseas opportunities, then Mike passed, and that was way too soon for him, then Covid, so that momentum that I had got slowed down.

BRONER

I have been doing this for a long time and at this point in my career I realized I just sit back and focus on everything ahead of me. Fights were dropping and all that did was give me more time to stay in the gym, stay out of trouble and just keep working. That’s what I did and now we are here.

(Regarding this coming Saturday’s Taylor vs Lopez fight) I’m not worried about Taylor or Lopez, even though I love Lopez. I’m not worried about what they got going on.

Right now I am interested in Billy. I’m not going to talk about blanks.

Me and Don? I think everyone can see it but until I kick somebody’s ass, then it will kick in. The sky is the limit with guys like me and Don King. AB and DK – this over with.

Training camp has been crazy. There has been some crazy days. With a coach like my uncle, I call him my uncle, Kevin Cunningham is very militant. No BS – he’s yelling or cussing me out every day. He’s a perfectionist.

I wouldn’t say this is a new beginning, I would say I am just going to reclaim something I already had. If I hit it once I know I can hit it again.

I feel great. Every day I look in the mirror, I have goals and that’s what I am focuses on. Only a fighter can know. It’s a lonely sport. It’s a sport where you have to look in the mirror every day and say f’it. You gotta say f everybody and go out there and do what you gotta do, so secure you. Because if you can’t make sure you are straight, with no shortcuts, and I think that’s why I’m doing good this time around.

Adrien Broner, Former Four-Weight World Champion, Vows to Overcome Mental Health Issues and Get Career Back on Track

ATLANTA. GA. (February 7, 2023) – Adrien Broner, former four-weight world champion and one of the most talented fighters of his generation, has announced his intention to overcome the mental health issues that have plagued him in recent years and return to the ring with a renewed focus and determination.

Broner will make his highly anticipated return against Michael Williams Jr. on February 25, live on BLK Prime PPV. The two warriors will go head-to-head at The Gateway Center @ College Park, GA, in what promises to be a fierce battle that fans won’t want to miss.

“I’ve been through a lot, but I’m not one to give up easily,” Broner states. “I know I’ve got what it takes to be a champion again, and I’m going to do everything in my power to get there. My mental health is a priority, and I’m taking the necessary steps to get back to my best both inside and outside of the ring.”

Broner has already taken significant steps towards his recovery, including seeking help from mental health professionals and making lifestyle changes that support his wellbeing. He has also been working tirelessly in the gym with new head coach Kevin Cunningham, training with a renewed sense of purpose and dedication.

“I can’t wait to get back out there and show everyone what I’m made of,” Broner said. “Coach Cunningham is a no-nonsense type of trainer who keeps me accountable for everything I do inside and outside the ring. He’s been a big blessing and understands what I’ve been going through. I’ve got a lot to prove, and I’m going to do it with my fists. BLK Prime Announces Adrien Broner vs. Ivan Redkach Scheduled for February

OMAHA, NEBRASKA – (December 12, 2022) – This past Saturday, BLK Prime announced that former 4-division world champion Adrien Broner (34-4-1, 24 KOs) will be returning to the ring to face Ivan Redkach (23-6-1, 18 KOs) in a highly anticipated welterweight matchup. The scheduled 10-round bout, promoted by Christy Martin Promotions, is slated for February. A fight date and location will be announced at a later date.

Broner, known for his flashy style and impressive power, in his last outing scored a unanimous decision victory over Jovanie Santiago (14-2-1, 10 KOs) in November 2020. His last fight before that was a unanimous decision loss to Manny Pacquiao in 2019. Broner is eager to show the world he still has what it takes to become a world champion again.

“I’m excited to be back in the ring and to show everyone why I’m one of the best boxers in the world,” said Broner. “Redkach is a tough opponent, but I’m confident that I have the skills and experience to come out on top. Everyone knows I bring excitement to the ring and against Redkach, it will be no different. It’s time to bring another great show to BLK Prime, I can’t wait.

Redkach, a Ukrainian-born boxer who now fights out of Los Angeles, has been in the ring with some of the best fighters in the welterweight division, which include Regis Prograis, Devon Alexander, and Danny Garcia to name a few.

“Broner is a great fighter, but I believe I have the power and determination to beat him,” said Redkach. “This is my opportunity to show the world that I’m still a dangerous fighter. I know I have what it takes to defeat Broner.”

Christy Martin Promotions will be the lead promoter for Broner vs. Redkach, once again showing the diversity BLK Prime is showing the world by having a woman lead their event. The plan is to have some very talented female fighters on the card.”

In a battle of former world champions, Mickey Bey (23-3-1, 11 KOs) and Tevin Farmer (30-5-1, 6 KOs) will square off in a highly anticipated lightweight matchup on the undercard.

Additionally, SHOWTIME SPORTS will offer live streaming coverage of unbeaten Cuban heavyweight standout Lenier Peró battling Joel Caudle in an eight-round bout and undefeated middleweight Fiodor Czerkaszyn taking on Gilbert Venegas Jr. in an eight-round duel via the SHOWTIME Sports YouTube channel and SHOWTIME Boxing Facebook page prior to the start of the televised quadrupleheader. Four-division world champion Adrien Broner pulled out of the previously scheduled match against Figueroa, citing personal issues in advance of the fight.

“Man, I’m going [through] a lot at this moment in my life, but I ain’t gonna give up. I set some more goals and I finish what I started but sorry to say this, but I’m not fighting August 20,” Broner said in an Instagram post. “Sorry to all my fans but Mental Health is real and I’m not about to play inside the ring … So, I have to step back and overcome this obstacle before I go put my life on the line inside the square circle again. I know I’m far from being finished with the sport SEE Y’ALL SOON.’’

The 32-year-old Figueroa (28-2-1, 19 KOs) is from a fighting family along with his younger brother Brandon, a former super bantamweight world champion. Figueroa won the WBC Lightweight World Championship with a unanimous decision victory over Nihito Arakawa in a 2013 “Fight of the Year” and successfully defended the title two times before moving up to super lightweight in 2015. Figueroa has also fought at welterweight, earning action-packed victories over Robert Guerrero, John Molina Jr., and Antonio DeMarco. He’ll move back down to super lightweight on August 20 after back-to-back defeats against Yordenis Ugas and Abel Ramos. His match against Lipinets is a classic crossroads fight.

“This is going to be a great fight against Lipinets and I hope he’s ready for what I’m bringing,” said Figueroa. “I’ve made changes in my life and I’m excited to see the kind of fighter that I am now. I’m going to show what I can do now that I have a clear head and a clear path ahead of me. With the opponent change I’m even more ready to take all the frustrations and anger that have built up in camp and bring it into the ring on Saturday and come out victorious.”

Lipinets (16-2-1, 12 KOs) has been in training and was already scheduled to appear on the August 20 card before being elevated as a replacement for Broner in the main event. Born in Martuk, Kazakhstan and now living in Woodland Hills, Calif., Lipinets is no stranger to the main stage, having tangled with champions including Lamont Peterson and Mikey Garcia. The 33-year-old defeated Akhiro Kondo for the IBF super lightweight title in 2017 and lost the title to Garcia by unanimous decision in 2018. He is coming off a loss to Jaron Ennis in a welterweight title in April 2021.

“We’ve actually been in camp for almost three months getting ready for whoever they put in front of me,” said Lipinets. “We’ve been training with no particular opponent in mind. There have been a few different guys that have said they wanted to fight me. So, we’ve been sparring with and preparing for all types of styles. And now we get this great news that I get to fight Figueroa this Saturday. I can’t wait to show everyone that I’m still a force to be reckoned with at 140 pounds.”

Tickets for the live event are on sale now and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com.

OMAR FIGUEROA JR. SAN ANTONIO MEDIA
WORKOUT QUOTES

SAN ANTONIO – August 9, 2022 – Former World Champion Omar Figueroa Jr. held a San Antonio media workout on Tuesday as he nears his super lightweight battle against four-division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner Saturday, August 20 live on SHOWTIME (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT) from Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. in a Premier Boxing Champions event.

The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® telecast begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and will feature top 140-pounders Alberto Puello and Batyr Akhmedov squaring off for the vacant WBA Super Lightweight World Championship in the co-main event. Plus, WBA Super Featherweight World Champion Roger Gutierrez defends his title against unbeaten Hector Garcia in the telecast opener.

Tickets for the live event are on sale now and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com.

Figueroa Jr. was joined on Tuesday by his brother, former super bantamweight world champion and current featherweight contender Brandon Figueroa and his father and trainer Omar Figueroa Sr. at the media workout.

Here is what they had to say:

OMAR FIGUEROA JR.

“We grew up kind of poor coming from the Valley. San Antonio was the biggest city that we could get to and enjoy. For us, this was like the maximum. So being able to camp here being so close to home has been a game changer. Obviously, I have my family here as well. I won’t say everything in this camp has gone perfect, because perfection is so hard to acquire, but everything has gone pretty close to perfect. We’re excited.

“I’m just worried about this fight. I’m not looking at anything else. I don’t know how I’m going to feel, physically and mentally. So much has changed in the past year. I’ve gone through so much since I was diagnosed regarding my mental health. It’s been tough. I’ve been doing this for 27 years now. So, I’m really looking forward to this fight.

“The biggest thing for me the past few years has been my mental health diagnosis. After my last fight, I knew there was something wrong. We did everything we needed to do in camp, we prepared right to make sure we were 100%. Everything went wrong in that fight. I started questioning myself and wondering why the heck everything went so bad. I spoke to my doctor and then I was diagnosed with all these mental health issues and that’s when I realized maybe the problem was me all along. I’ve been working on myself so much. I’m just grateful to SHOWTIME and my team and we’re excited to show how far we’ve come.

“Growing up in the Mexican culture, it’s a lot of ‘All, it’s all in your head. It doesn’t really exist.’ So, I had to look into it alone. I didn’t have the support of my family when it came to that. Even now, they still kind of struggle to see that. I feel it’s very taboo to a lot of people. Thankfully, I’m in a position where, having the platform I have, I’m able to shed some light on it and show that we’re all just human. Us boxers may look like we’re invincible, getting punched and cut and fighting through it, but we’re human at the end of the day. I finally took a break and looked inward and started taking care of myself, accepting the fact that I’m human, that I hurt, that I can get anxiety and depressed.

“This camp has shed some light on being vulnerable and how much it helps to allow myself to be human. Now, I talk to my family differently. If I’m having a tough day before I get here to the gym, I’ll talk to my mom or my sister. Or when I’m feeling low, we’ll just embrace. I tell them how much I love them, how much I appreciate them for being here for me. Honestly, being human is one of the best things I decided to do.

“Broner is one of the biggest names in boxing. He likes to put himself out there. He’s also a great example of why mental health should be addressed. He’s kind of out there where, sometimes he’s a little bit crazy and other times he repents for being a little bit crazy. Like I said, we’re humans. That’s one of the things I hope he looks at and tries to help himself when it comes to that.

“Honestly, there was a time when I was a little bit jealous of Broner. He had such an amazing career and, like me, things got to us. As we all know, things haven’t gone the smoothest for us. So, I’m getting the word out about mental health, doing more to bring it to the mainstream and I’m glad my opponent is Adrien Broner because he’s a great advocate for that too. I feel he can make a huge difference if he sheds a little bit of light on it. Other than that, this is a great opportunity and I know it’s going to be a hell of a fight.

“I don’t watch his stuff online and see what he’s doing. Even if he does start trash talking, it’s all part of the show. He’s been through his share of struggles and I can say I honestly respect Adrien Broner.

“I’m not sure what kind of dance partner I’ll see. This is going to be a great fight for the fans of the sport and I’m just hoping to make it a great fight.”

BRANDON FIGUEROA, Figueroa’s Brother and Former World Champion

“Both of these guys are going to bring everything to the table. I think it’s their time to shine, their time to showcase their skills and really make a statement. I’m just so proud of my brother, how far he has come and he is still here. He’s put in the work. Every time me and my brother fight, it’s must-see. We’re all-action fighters. This is going to be amazing.

“It’s going to be a great fight. There will definitely be fireworks. I know my brother is going to bring the pressure on Broner. Broner is quick, fast and slick so my brother has to keep that pressure on him, work the body and do the effective work that Marcos Maidana did when he beat Broner. Obviously, it’s not similar styles, but if he follows that game plan I believe it will work.”

OMAR FIGUEROA SR., Figueroa’s Father and Trainer

“Preparation is going well. His training has been good, sparring is good, injury-free up to now. We’re hoping he’s at 100% going into this fight.

“Omar is an offensive-minded fighter. That’s his defense. So, we’re working on conditioning for this fight. Omar is 32. He’s feeling the age a bit. That’s why you take advantage of your youth in this sport. But with Broner, that is a pretty even fight. We’re looking to win this fight and see what’s next.

“Broner is a great fighter. He derailed a bit, but he’s back on track. He and Omar took different paths and now they’re back on it. I take nothing away from Broner. He looked a little overweight from what I saw, but maybe he knows how to cut weight getting close to the fight.”

ADRIEN BRONER AND OMAR FIGUEROA JR. PREVIEW SATURDAY, AUGUST 20 SHOWDOWN HEADLINING LIVE ON SHOWTIME®

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – July 21, 2022 – Four-division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner and Omar “Panterita” Figueroa previewed their super lightweight showdown during virtual media events this week before they headline live on SHOWTIME on Saturday, August 20 from Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. in a Premier Boxing Champions event.

Also featured were Broner’s longtime trainer Mike Stafford, and Figueroa’s father and trainer Omar Figueroa Sr. Here is what they had to say this week:

ADRIEN BRONER

“Keep training your ass off Omar, I’m training my ass off too, and we’ll give everyone a great performance on August 20.

“I’m real excited to be back in the ring. It’s been a long camp and I’m ready to fight. It feels great to be back. I’ve been training so hard and somebody’s got to pay for it.

“The goal right now is to beat Omar Figueroa Jr. Then I’m going to the drawing board from there. There are a lot of big fights that I can make. First I have to be successful on August 20.

“You can’t look past a guy like Figueroa. He’s always been a tough competitor and he’s a world champion. We’re definitely not looking past him. At this point I’m just taking care of whatever is in front of me.

“Nothing in boxing is easy. Mentally it’s always tough but I’m getting through it every day and working my ass off.

“I’m going to go in there and do what I have to do to get the victory. If I have to bang or snipe, I’ll do whatever it takes. I’m ready for the best Omar Figueroa Jr.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen until that first bell rings. I’m just going to keep preparing to the best of our ability.

“I’m a four-division world champion, so the expectations for myself are always high. I know that when I go into the ring, people expect great things out of me. I’m used to it and just focused on getting the victory.”

OMAR FIGUEROA JR.

On Adrien Broner saying that he’s going for the stoppage…

“If he’s going for the stoppage, then I’ll meet him in the middle of the ring. That’s it. We’ll see.

“I’m excited that this fight is finally happening. I’ve been looking forward to the challenge. I know that Broner has a lot left in the tank and I know that he’s a world caliber fighter regardless of whatever is going on outside of boxing for him. We’re preparing like never before.

“Now that I have my mental health under control as well as feeling great physically, I feel like it’s given me new life. We’ll just have to wait and see how I look and feel in this fight and then we’ll go from there.

“Before I got my mental health under control, I was fueled by hatred and anger and all the negative stuff. Now I’m really soaking it in, making time for my family, being there for my dad. I’m being appreciative and grateful for the opportunity that I have to do this again with my family and do it at the level I’m doing it.

“We’re getting ready for the best Adrien Broner. Whether that’s one that throws 10 punches a round or 50 punches a round, we’re focused on our craft and what we have to do to win the fight. That’s all we have in mind right now.

“It’s never been me against the world. It’s been me against myself. Now I’ve realized that. After being diagnosed with the slew of mental health issues that I had, I realize that the battle really has been with myself. I’ve made my career so much harder than it had to be because of everything that I had going on outside of boxing. Now that I’ve gotten that cleared out of the way, I’m able to focus on what I have to do to be the best version of myself in the ring.

“I have to credit Simone Biles for helping me get the ball rolling on getting my mental health under control. For her to pull out of the Olympics when she did and for the reason she did – I feel like that started the snowball effect for me. I realized that if she had the guts to take care of herself and pull out of the world’s biggest competition when all eyes were on her essentially, then me, who has been getting punched in the face for the last 20 years, I had to start taking care of myself too. I’m so glad that I did. It’s been life changing.

“I’ve been working my ass off both internally and externally to be the best version of myself. We’re hoping to provide that on August 20. I’m going in there and I want to feel that fire again. It’s exciting and I can’t wait to go out there and put it out.”

MIKE STAFFORD, Broner’s Trainer

“It’s been a long camp and at this point, we’ll definitely be ready for this fight on August 20.

“It’s never a crossroads fight for Adrien. He can always fight anywhere in the country, any time he wants to, because he has the attitude that he’s going to win. We’re looking at it like we’re going to take over boxing again,

“A lot of people wanted him to lose, because they don’t see the skillset and the punches that he throws that truly count. He actually dropped Jovanie Santiago, but didn’t get a 10-8 round for it. A lot of people talk about Adrien, but they’re not in the ring taking shots from him and seeing the skills Adrien has.

“Adrien just wants to get back in the ring and prove that he’s the top dog again. He’s training his ass off to prove to the world that he’s coming.

“Most of Adrien’s stoppages came below welterweight. When he was at 147, he would never even weigh in at that limit. I think this is definitely his comfortable weight.

“People think Adrien is a regular fighter, but he’s beyond regular. He’s opened up the door for a lot of fighters. But he needs one or two more belts before we ride off into the sunset.”

OMAR FIGUEROA SR., Figueroa’s Father and Trainer

“We’re going back to basics. It’s kind of like starting over and getting into his memory and the things we were doing before when he was doing great. We’re trying to get him in top shape. A lot of respect to Adrien Broner. I think both guys are going to go in there and put up a big fight. It’s going to be exciting. They are equally matched.

“I think Omar is going to be a much different fighter on August 20. We’re just hoping that both fighters come in great shape and put on a good show for the fans. I’m wishing the best for both fighters.

“I can guarantee the fans will see a tough Mexican fighter. Omar has a great offensive skillset. He throws a lot of punches. Adrien likes to fight these kinds of boxers. It’s guaranteed to be a great fight and the fans will enjoy it.”
