SMITH VS PUELLO: WEIGH-IN RESULTS AND FIGHT NIGHT RUNNING ORDER CONFIRMED AHEAD OF SATURDAY’S WBC WORLD TITLE SHOWDOWN
Dalton Smith told Alberto Puelllo that his WBC World Super Lightweight Championship is going nowhere as the rivals weighed-in and faced off for a final time before their showdown in the Steel City on Saturday night – live worldwide on DAZN.
Roared on by his home crowd, Smith took to the scales at 139.6lbs with mandatory challenger Puello coming in at an identical weight.
The two-time former World Champion Dominican southpaw harbours hope of reclaiming the coveted Green & Gold belt, which he lost to the man who Dalton defeated in Subriel Matias.
But Smith, ready to shine in his first defence on home soil at the Utilita Arena, told Puello that his title is staying in Sheffield.
Speaking to SJA Award winning broadcaster Jamie Ward, Smith said: “There is no pressure for me. All the years of hard work and sacrifice, I am made for moments like this.
“You can see all the people who have turned out and the support I have. I’ve dreamt of nights like this and tomorrow night, it is going to be special.
“I just told him that he’s scared and that this is my house. I have worked my whole life to become a World Champion and tomorrow I am going to do the same. And still!”
On the stacked undercard, Lightweight prospect Giorgio Visioli bids for a statement victory against the vastly experienced local favourite Maxi Hughes as the collide for the WBC International Silver Title.
Plus Emma Dolan and Shannon Ryan collide in a brilliant rematch with the British, Commonwealth and IBF Intercontinental Titles at stake. SMITH VS PUELLO PRESS CONFERENCE: EVERYTHING THAT WAS SAID AHEAD OF SATURDAY’S WBC WORLD TITLE SHOWDOWN IN SHEFFIELD
Hungry challenger Alberto Puello says he is ready for “war” as he gets set to step into a cauldron of noise this Saturday in the Steel City as Dalton Smith defends his WBC World Super Lightweight Championship in his Sheffield home for the first time – live on DAZN.
Smith celebrated his crowning glory back in January in what was one of the greatest British away days wins in modern history when he dethroned Subriel Matias – the man who prised the belt away originally from two-time World Champion Puello.
But the Dominican southpaw insists he is prepared for the electric atmosphere that awaits in his quest to reclaim the coveted Green & Gold strap.
Undefeated holder Smith, however, believes the best bring out the best in him as he vowed to add Puello’s name to his resumé and march on to bigger, Unification bouts in 2027.
The pair exchanged verbal blows ahead of their highly anticipated showdown this weekend in what is a quality card in Yorkshire. Scroll down to see what was said, in full, below.

SHEFFIELD PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES IN FULL
Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport Chairman
“Dalton Smith returns home here to Sheffield’s Utilita Arena for, what many believe, one of the toughest fights in the 140lbs division against his mandatory challenger Alberto Puello on what promises to be a brilliant night of boxing.
“This is an important night for one of our youngest, British World Champions in Dalton.
“It is a brilliant fight card. We haveyoung Cruiserweight Divine Omojor making his professional debut in a cracking line-up Before the Bell. And, of course, we have Leo Atang in one of the toughest tests of his career so far as he steps up in the Heavyweight division. We have a great schedule coming up in what is one of the busiest periods of the year – and it all gets underway this Saturday night in Sheffield.
“Also on the undercard we have a brilliant rematch for the British & Commonwealth Titles with Emma Dolan and Shannon Ryan, and then – a fight that I cannot wait for, ever since it was made, with plenty of spice in a huge step up for one of our big world talent’s and prospects in Giorgio Visioli against a man who everybody knows in local favourite, Maxi Hughes. He seems to be looking younger everytime I see him and will be rolling the dice once more in what is a huge fight.”
Dalton Smith, WBC World Super Lightweight Champion
“Of course, I am aware of the challenge. There are no easy fights and this is a World Championship. I have never avoided a fight. I have always fought who I have needed to fight in front of me. And I have always come out victorious. The night in New York is a memory that will last forever but it is old news now. There is a lot more I would like to go and achieve in boxing. And on Saturday night, that is where we are going to pick back up where we left off. The best fighters bring the best out of me. That’s why on Saturday night you are going to get the best version of Dalton Smith. He [Alberto Puello] is no stranger to us. We have watched him and studied him for probably well over a year now. People say he is tricky but I like fighting southpaws. I was privileged to sit ringside and watch Matias vs Puello in what was a very close fight. But it’s also why I go into this fight feeling very confident. I have prepared for this like I am the challenger and on Saturday night I will prove to the boxing world why I am No.1. I am cool, calm, collected and I will do it again on Saturday. It’s massive and without the support that I’ve got, I wouldn’t be able to do this. I’ve got one of the best teams around and Saturday night is going to be special and the atmosphere is going to be electric.”
Alberto Puello
“It was a very difficult result to accept [his defeat by Subriel Matias] but now we are here for a war. I am here to get back that title, as you said Eddie [Hearn], that was taken away from me. We come in now better prepared for the fight than we were last time against Subriel Matias and we are ready to get back what is ours. Obviously I am not going to say what I am going to do in the fight on Saturday night because that would mess up my plans completely. I say that I am a level above him because I believe that I have faced a level of opponents who are above him during my career. Of course, that is in spite of the fact that he has beaten one of the opponents who beat me. But I don’t believe that [his defeat by Matias] was a clear decision.”
Giorgio Visioli
“Maxi [Hughes] was the first name they offered and I said yes straight away. It’s just self-belief. You might call it ego but it’s not ego. You’re allowed self-belief in this sport but I think some people don’t like that. If I believe in myself, then I’ll take the opportunity. I don’t know where he’s getting it from that my team don’t want this fight because we all said yes straight away. I think he’s still there and he’s done a good job on some good fighters. But I believe in myself and if I say I am going to do something, then I will do it. Ultimately, a win is a win. But for me to push on in my career then I think the stoppage is there. It’s a must do and that is what I am going to do.”
Maxi Hughes
“There is still plenty of life in me for an old dog and I have to ask the question that if you’re a Matchroom fighter and you’re up here, sat opposite me, then what have you done to upset Matchroom and yourself [Eddie Hearn]? You might as well call me the Matchroom exterminator. You did it with Kid Galahad – you wanted rid of him, so you fed him to Maxi. You did it with Gary Cully, so you fed him to Maxi. I’m not sure what Giorgio has done to upset you but maybe you’ve brought me here to get rid of him. I’m feeling good and I have had a lot more than 10 days notice to prepare. Things have gone well and I’m at home here in South Yorkshire, so it’s brilliant. Being on Dalton’s card, it’s massive for Dalton, and I am proud to be a part of this massive night and big show. You have pressured him. You have done your job as a promotional company because you have hyped him up. You’ve promoted him well and you’ve done your job. It’s his turn now. You’ve gone and done your job, now it’s over to him. I don’t know if his team wanted it but I’ve heard that Giorgio was the one who said he did. There is pressure on him. I am his biggest fight. I expect nothing less. We’ll see if he’s got it in him when the bell goes, under the lights, against someone like myself because I’ve been there and done it around the world, against many different styles. I have the experience and I’ve done it the hard way, most of the time in the away corner.”
Shannon Ryan, Commonwealth and IBF Intercontinental Super Flyweight Champion
“It’s amazing to be back, so thank you [Matchroom Boxing] always. I need to right that wrong in order to move on and fight for the World Championship. Yes, I am No.1 [ranked by the IBF]. But for me to really feel and know that I am No.1 I simply have to right this wrong and then push on for what is next. I think what is different to the last fight is that I am very different. I am a different person. I think everyone can see that my boxing has improved tremendously since then too. I’ll be bringing the same aggression, the same chaos. But I am a better boxer. As long as I listen to my team, I believe that I can win this fight in anyway I want it to go. I can get the win by any means.”
Emma Dolan, British Super Flyweight Champion
“Thank you to Matchroom for getting me on and this is a brilliant fight, especially being on Dalton [Smith’s] undercard as well. It’s amazing for British boxing. I feel really, really good, I’ve had a great camp and I’m looking forward to making it 2-0. I feel like I have improved a lot and I am definitely a better version of myself going into this fight.”
MATCHROOM SPORT CHAIRMAN EDDIE HEARN DELIVERS VERDICT ON DALTON SMITH’S WORLD TITLE DEFENCE AGAINST ALBERTO PUELLO
Eddie Hearn has dangled the carrot of a huge stadium Unification fight at Hillsborough next for Dalton Smith if he can defeat an “elite” operator in former two-time World Champion Alberto Puello this Saturday – live worldwide on DAZN.
Sheffield hero Smith defends his WBC World Super Lightweight Championship for the first time in a homecoming clash with dangerous Dominican Puello at the Utilita Arena.
The pair faced off outside the arena to kick-start fight week before they go head-to-head at Thursday’s press conference.
Matchroom Sport Chairman Hearn, speaking to Matchroom Boxing, revealed he is excited about their main-event showdown in the Steel City and believes Smith deserves a dream stadium fight at his beloved Sheffield Wednesday FC if he can overcome Puello.
“This is a brilliant fight,”said Hearn, speaking to Matchroom Boxing’s official YouTube channel.
“It is one of the fights of the year on British soil. It is a very, very, very tough homecoming defence.
“We knew that when Dalton went into the Subriel Matias fight, this was part of that backlog, if you like, with the WBC.
“Many people thought that the victory for Matias over Puello was quite a controversial one. It was certainly a very close fight. The WBC decided that the winner of Matias against Dalton would have to fight Puello.
“What Dalton did back in January was quite incredible, and now we have what is a brilliant fight. It is one of the top fights in the division and a really tough homecoming defence.
“Historically, you would get an easier one after having to fight Matias in New York. But that just shows you the ability and skill of Dalton Smith. Back-to-back wins over Matias and Puello would be one hell of a statement in the 140lbs division.
“Although that was earlier this year, it seems like a lifetime ago. When you think back to that moment, it was how the fight unfolded. You’re in a situation where everybody felt that Dalton Smith had the fundamentals to outbox Subriel Matias.
“But he needed to do that without getting drawn into a war. And we knew the war would be coming – we just felt it needed to come in the championship rounds. Then, all of a sudden, after a great first round, the war ensued and Dalton was in the trenches.
“I’ll be honest, I was watching the fight thinking, ‘This is not how we want things to go.’ It was an all-out war, and Dalton was under a huge amount of pressure. But he just bit down on his gumshield and basically smashed Matias to pieces in his own game. It was such a wonderful performance. It was a method that I didn’t expect in terms of the victory, and that was what was so incredible about it.
“We know how good Dalton Smith is. Technically, he’s one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the UK, no question about it. He’s a top, world-class fighter. But can he stand with a guy who has that sort of knockout ratio and is renowned for being a huge puncher, go toe-to-toe with him and come out on the other side?
“For me, that was one of the top wins on away soil by a British fighter of all time. The way that he did it, picking up a WBC World Title, I feel like he deserves a huge amount of credit for that win. And now this is an important moment for British boxing to see one of our top young world champions defending his belt in a really tough fight.
“Style-wise, Puello can be extremely awkward. He can punch a bit as well. I think, with Puello, Dalton needs to be aggressive. You can’t let him old-man you in there. Dalton’s at home and he’s the champion. Now he needs to go and deliver a championship performance. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dalton be more aggressive than people think in this fight.
“Puello is a top fighter, and you’re talking about a real elite guy. But I believe that Dalton Smith has every claim to be the top 140lbs fighter in the world right now. Back-to-back victories over Matias and Puello would be a fantastic run on his résumé.
“[A fight at Hillsborough] is a real carrot. We are having big conversations with the club [Sheffield Wednesday] about a fight. We would love to bring over a big name for it in what would hopefully be a unification fight.
“If he can complete victories over Matias and Puello [back-to-back], then he deserves that kind of night. That’s his dream, and we’ve done extremely well in putting on big stadium events – we know that they work.
“A big Dalton Smith fight at Hillsborough would be sensational.”

DALTON SMITH VS ALBERTO PUELLO LAUNCH PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES IN FULL AS SHEFFIELD UNDERCARD FOR OCT 24 IS CONFIRMED
Dalton Smith vowed to defend his WBC World Super Lightweight Title in style when he headlines in his home city of Sheffield on Saturday, October 24 – live worldwide on DAZN – as he met rival Alberto Puello for the first time at a launch press conference today.
’Thunder’ Smith celebrated one of the greatest away wins in British boxing history back in January when he spectacularly stopped Subriel Matias in Brooklyn, New York, to captured the coveted Green & Gold belt.
And former two-time World Champion Puello stands in his way next as mandatory challenger for the belt.
The dangerous Dominican southpaw is determined to spoil Smith’s homecoming and be reunited with the title he surrendered in 2025 when he lost to Matias.
But as the pair stood face-to-face for the first time, Smith insisted the belt will be staying put with him in Sheffield for some time yet as he promised to deliver a special night in the Steel City.
Quotes from the launch press conference can be found in full below.
Matchroom Boxing CEO Frank Smith was in attendance as he confirmed a stellar supporting cast for ’Steel City King’ Smith’s homecoming at the Utilita Arena. Tickets for October 24 are available now via tickemaster.co.uk & events365.com.
The WBC International Silver Lightweight Title is up for grab as English Champion Giorgio Visioli (11-0, 6 KOs) steps up to his biggest challenge yet in the form of former IBO World Champion, Maxi Hughes (29-9-2, 6 KOs).
York’s teenage Heavyweight sensation Leo Atang (8-0, 7 KOs) is back on home soil too, fresh from his emphatic knockout victory in Los Angeles against Glen Williams earlier this summer on his US debut. An opponent for the 19-year-old will be named in due course.
The undercad sees Super Featherweight contender Aqib Fiaz returns to the Utilita Arena where he succumbed to an agonisingly close, split points defeat by Josh Padley back in June. The Manchester man (14-2, 2 KOs) will face Oxford’s former European title challenger in Jordan Flynn (13-2-1, 2 KOs).
An exciting rematch awaits when Shannon ‘Kaos’ Ryan (11-1, 2 KOs) looks to avenge her only career defeat when she takes on her 2024 nemesis in Emma Dolan (9-1, 1 KO) as the pair get set to collide again with the British, Commonwealth and Intercontinental Super Flyweight Titles on the line.
Plus, in a Yorkshire derby Super Welterweight Joe Hayden (24-0, 4 KOs) takes on Will ‘The Thrill’ Harrison (8-1-2) and Steel City Gym Middleweight prospect Chris Mulunda (4-0) looks to extend his unbeaten record with a win in front of his home crowd.
Here are the quotes from today’s launch press conference:
FRANK SMITH, MATCHROOM BOXING CEO
“It has been an unbelievable journey. Dalton Smith has done it from the start. He’s taken every test and gone after every belt, and even when it came to winning the belt he went to his opponent’s backyard – a fighter nobody wanted to fight in Subriel Matias. He took the belt away in spectacular fashion. The way he finished that fight at the Barclays Center, obviously an amazing crowd, came over from Sheffield but really in Subriel’s hometown it felt like, being over there. What a win and what a journey he’s been on. Time and time again he’s taken every test that’s stood in front of him. Even with this test against Albert Puello, Steve Bunce was just saying to me that it would have been nice to get a nice easy over the hill name for the first defence, but he’s testing himself in his first fight back against Albert Puello who is the WBC mandatory. It’s a proper fight and he’s not looking beyond this. I truly believe after this unifications are there, the big night at Hillsborough is there and I can’t wait for what’s ahead.”
DALTON SMITH
“Just to be sat here right now as a World Champion feels special. I remember doing this the first time we headlined for the British Title. I’ve done everything I said I was going to do; go through all the belts and bring a World Title back to Sheffield and have a big homecoming. This is what I’ve got now. It’s a tough test in front of me but that’s what brings the best out of me. Sheffield, October 24th it’s going to be loud. The atmosphere is going to be noisy. It’s going to be a special moment for me.
“Style wise Alberto Puello is a great champion. He’s a two-time World Champion for a reason. But like I said, I’ve always liked that style – southpaws. It’ll be completely different from my last fight. I’m expecting a high-level boxing fight in this one. Alberto is someone we have studied for the last 18 months, before the Matias fight when he was World Champion. He’s been on our radar for quite a while. We’ve studied him quite a bit so I’m very familiar with his style, what he does well and what he doesn’t do well. That’s for me on October 24 to put that into action.”
ALBERTO PUELLO
“Well, firstly, I am very excited to be here, to come to this country and to be able to put on a great show. But more than anything it is to be able to take this title home once again, as well as putting on a great show for the fans.
“The only thing I think about when I look back on that fight is that you should never abandon your fight plan. I feel like the reason why I didn’t get a clear victory is because I fell into his trap and into his game. I feel like if I’d have continued on with the plan that I’d had, my fight plan, it would have been a completely different story.
“I think like everybody I was very surprised that Dalton Smith could go and knockout Subriel Matias. I don’t want to take anything away from Dalton Smith as a fighter but I think it was a big surprise that he was able to knock him out.
“There’s very few things I can say about weaknesses, I don’t see many weaknesses in him. But what I will say is that it will be hugely satisfying to come here to his home and to rip the belt away from him. It will be really satisfying for me and a humiliation for him.”
GIORGIO VISIOLI
“I think it will bring the best out of me. Maxi has boxed in three World Title eliminators, I think. I think he will bring the best out in me. It will allow me to bring more of my style out and show more counter punching and stuff. I’m looking forward to it. I was offered a few opponents but I was first to say yes to Maxi. I wanted the hardest challenge. I want to show the world what I can do. I think this is past British level. I think he is fringe European level. This is past British level and I’m looking forward to showing my levels on that night. I can’t wait. If I win this fight bigger fights are in the distance. For us, our team hasn’t thought that he’s over the hill at all. We’ve just been offered the fight and we’ve taken it. We’re going to train fully prepared and think he’s still there. Those last two fights, we’re not even going to look at those last two fights. He only had two weeks’ notice. We’re going to look at previous fights and see what we can do from there. I believe I can go all the way so we’ve got to take these fights and I’m looking forward to it.”
MAXI HUGHES
“I suppose looking at my career, taking that short notice, a lot of armchair fans and people thought I’m finished. We’re where I am with my age in my career. I always knew the phone was going to ring. People look at me and think, ‘he’s been at that level and we think maybe he’s over the hill’. I’ve been around a while. I’m the oldest on this table. People who I look up to in recent years are the likes of Kiko Martinez – he fought at a high level to the very end and he got to decided when he was done. That’s how I feel about it. Boxing gives me and my family a great life and I get to decide when I’m done. I still believe I’ve got what it takes. We had a bit of a hiccup earlier this year, I stepped up in weight and realised I’m nowhere near big enough for that weight on short notice. No regrets in taking that. I’ve reset and I’ve still got that desire. That’s why I’m sat here now. Giorgio is a great fighter, he’s the young pup coming through. It’s my job now to say, ‘it’s still my time’. I’m still current and I’m still enjoying my boxing.”
LEO ATANG
“All in all, it was a great experience getting over to the States; it’s a different world over there. Boxing outside in the heat and stuff, more stuff I can add to my experience going into the future. I enjoyed the performance and it was a good trip.
“We want knockouts. We’re going to step up the levels again this year and just improve with each performance. Even if there’s little gaps in between each fight, there’s going to be big improvements in my performances every time.”
SANDOVAL vs YAFAI UNIFICATION WORLD TITLE FIGHT TOPS THE BILL IN SHEFFIELD ON JUNE 6 – LIVE ON DAZN – AS DALTON SMITH IS SIDELINED
Dalton Smith has been ruled out of his scheduled WBC World Super Lightweight Title defence against Alberto Puello following an injury sustained during camp.

Tickets are on sale now. Refunds, if required, are available via the original point of purchase.
Elsewhere on the stacked undercard, Josh Padley defends his EBU European Super Featherweight Title against domestic rival, Aqib Fiaz.

Coventry Middleweight Aaron Bowen takes on Troy Coleman, plus Ibraheem Sulaimaan battles Ibrahim Nadim for the English Super Featherweight Championship.
DALTON SMITH VS ALBERTO PUELLO SET FOR JUNE 6 AT SHEFFIELD’S UTILITA ARENA – LIVE ON THE GLOBAL HOME OF BOXING, DAZN
The Steel City King is back with Dalton Smith’s Sheffield return officially set for Saturday, June 6 when he defends his WBC World Super Lightweight Championship for the first time against Alberto Puello – live on the Global Home of Boxing, DAZN.
Sheffield Utilita Arena will play host to what promises to be yet another special night in the Steel City as the 29-year-old takes on the Dominican southpaw.
Two-time World Champion Puello is desperate to reclaim the green and gold title he surrendered in a majority decision defeat to Subriel Matias in July last year.
Matias didn’t hold the hardware for long, as Smith swooped in back in January to deliver one of the most memorable away victories in modern British boxing history.
‘Thunder’ Smith realised his boyhood dream of becoming a World Champion, leaving the Barclays Center in Brooklyn with a stunning stoppage to end a breathtaking firefight with a ferocious fifth-round knockout.
Now Smith (19-0, 14 KOs) wants to put Puello (24-1, 10 KOs) to task and ensure a happy homecoming in front of his legion of fans.
“New York was a trip of a lifetime, but now it’s about bringing big World Title fights to Sheffield and it’s great to start my reign as champion back at the Utilita Arena,” said Smith.
“It’s straight into a mandatory defence so you expect world class opponents. There’s no denying Puello’s a top boxer. He’s a two-time champion for a reason.
“But I went to New York as the away fighter, with all the outside-the-ring stuff going on, and went toe-to-toe with the supposed bogeyman who had just beaten Puello – but that’s what we’re about in Sheffield: full of heart and nuts of steel.
“Puello’s an awkward southpaw, but it’s well known I love that style. It’ll be a big performance from me in my homecoming.
“I’ve had many special nights already at the Utilita Arena. The atmosphere will be rocking and I can’t wait to see everyone there on June 6 – or tune in live on DAZN.”
Tickets go on sale to Matchroom Boxing Fight Pass members this Thursday before General Sale on Friday with VIP tickets from £300, plus seats at £150, £80, £60, £40. For more information head to matchroomboxing.com
Media can apply to attend Fight Night and Fight Week events, by registering their details here.
A hungry Puello, however, is determined to spoil the party for Smith in his bid to become a three-time World Champion.
“I’m excited to be fighting for my title again on June 6,” said Puello.
“I’m looking forward to becoming a three-time World Champion and making history in the United Kingdom in front of its wonderful fan base.
“[Dalton] Smith a good boxer. I’m excited to share the ring with him and give the fans a great fight.”
Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn is looking forward to a huge Fight Night in Sheffield – and he expects fireworks in the Main Event.
“This is another mega fight coming to British shores – and another one for fight fans to enjoy on the Global Home of Boxing, DAZN,” said Hearn.
“Dalton’s win in Brooklyn will live long in the memory. It was an incredible night. Now he has the chance to cement his legacy and forge his name into folklore.
“Dalton is the Steel City King and Alberto Puello – a formidable, former two-time World Champion in his own right – will be in for one tough night with an electric atmosphere awaiting him in Sheffield.”
SALITA PROMOTIONS CONGRATULATES SUBRIEL MATIAS ON BECOMING THE WBC SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION
DETROIT (JULY 16, 2025) – Salita Promotions congratulates the newly minted WBC Super Lightweight World Champion Subriel Matias (23-2, 22 KOs) on his recent victory over former world champion Alberto Puello. In a back-and-forth outing, Matias scored a majority decision victory, giving Puello his first defeat. Matias’ world title showdown against Puello took place at the world-famous Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, N.Y.
In conjunction with long-time promoter Fresh Promotions, Salita Promotions co-promoted Matias’ matchup against Mexico’s Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela in front of his hometown of Fajardo, Puerto Rico, in March, as well as his title fight against Puello.
“An incredible win and performance by Subriel Matías in front of his fans in New York City. Fighting on such a big stage in one of boxing’s most iconic cities, Subriel delivered a statement that he’s the best Junior Welterweight in the world,” said President of Salita Promotions Dmitriy Salita. “This victory showcased his talent, toughness, and star potential—I believe he’s just getting started.”
“The first protagonist in achieving all of this is God himself, who made a promise come true once again in my life,” said Subriel Matias. “Then I would also like to thank everyone who showed me their support, especially my promoter Juan Orengo, and my entire team. They are the ones responsible for a great win against a great fighter like Puello. I’m not thinking about (Dalton Smith) right now. I’m going to enjoy my time off with the family right now, and then there will be time soon enough to sit down with my team and start working towards retaining our titles. The titles that we had to work so hard to get.”
Sheeraz Stops Berlanga in 5
Hamzah Sheeraz emphatically stopped Edgar Berlanga in round four of their 12-round super middleweight bout at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Flushing, Queens, New York
In round four, Sheeraz dropped Berlanga with a hard three punch combination that punctuated by a left to the head. Seconds later, it was two vicious head shots that put Berlanga on his back. Seconds into round five, Sheeraz landed a couple more hard shots to the head the doubled over Berlanga and the fight was stopped at 17 seconds.
Sheeraz, 167.8 lbs of Ilford Essex, ENG is 22-0-1 with 18 knockouts. Berlanga, 167.6 lbs of Lithia, FL via Brooklyn is 23-2.
“Whoever was in the ring with me tonight, there was no stopping me,” Sheeraz said at the end of the night. “After my last fight (against Carlos Adames), the amount of abuse I got on social media and in person—I understand it’s part of boxing—but it made me a hungrier fighter.”
Sheeraz worked with a new trainer for this bout, former middleweight champion Andy Lee, who he credited with aiding him in tonight’s win. “A massive thank you to Andy Lee, a man who put his faith and trust in me. In the first few rounds, I was losing them. I told him I can hunt this guy down and he believed me. Not many coaches do that, so Andy, thank you very much.”
“Canelo has always been a boxing hero of mine, so even for my name to be mentioned in the same sentence as his is a great achievement in and of itself,” said Sheeraz. “If I do get the opportunity to fight him, it won’t be one of those where I try to nick him on points. I will stand in the middle with him and have it out. Whoever lands first, I suppose, will knock out the other.”
Stevenson Decisions Zepeda to Retain Lightweight Title
Shakur Stevenson retained the WBC Lightweight title as he pounded out a 12-round unanimous decision over William Zepeda.
Zepeda made Stevenson show a different side of him as he was able to stand toe-to-toe with Zepeda. Zepeda pushed the action and at times backed Stevenson to the ropes. But Stevenson countered beautifully off the ropes. Zepeda landed punches, but Stevenson was able to land punch for punch and was alot more economical and precise with his punches.
Stevenson, 135 lbs of Newark, NJ won by scores of 119-109 and 118-110 twice and is now 24-0. Zepeda, 134.8 lbs of San Mateo, MEX is 33-1.
“It wasn’t the performance I was looking for, because I was trying to prove a point. I was trying to fight, so I took more punishment than usual. At the end of the day, I do whatever it takes to get the job done,” Stevenson remarked following the bout. “I’ve got that dog in me. I’m not no puppy. I’m not a poodle. I’m a tough guy. I’ve got dog in me.” (See video HERE)
“That was one of the toughest fighters at 135 lbs. I want a lot of people to get in the ring with him and see how tough he is. He pushed me to another level,” Stevenson said of Zepeda. “I had to go in my bag. He just kept coming. He tried to pin me against the ropes so I had to switch it up and not sit against the ropes too long.”
When asked who may be next on his list, Stevenson welcomed all challengers while noting he plans to keep leveling up his game. “Whoever. I want to go back to the drawing board, work on my game a little bit. Get physically stronger and when I come back, I’ll be even better.”

Tank Davis Fortunate To Get Draw Against Roach
BROOKLYN–Gervonta Davis is still undefeated, he is still champion, but that should be in question after he got a 12-round split draw with local rival Lamont Roach Jr. in front of a record crowd of 19,250 at Barclays Center.
Davis started off the first half of fight in decent fashion as he slowed the pace and was able to squeeze some early rounds under his belt by thin margins.
Roach, who is the WBA champion at Super Featherweight, looked and started to fight like the bigger man as he began to dictate the fight on his on terms by engaging Davis in a series of toe-to-toe exchanges for which he got the better of. In round nine, Roach seemed to land a punch that made Davis take a step back and take a knee. Referee Steve Willis started to and then stopped the count and ultimately ruled it a slip. Davis then leaned between the ropes and got toweled off by his corner with the consent in Willis. That action would seem to warrant a disqualification but Willis let the fight continue. The fight continued at a furious pace which favored the 16-1 underdog Roach, and many ringside observers and fans watching on television echoed their thoughts via social media that they thought that despite the antics in round nine, that Roach deserved to have his hands raised. That was not the case as one judge scored the fight for Davis 115-113, while two other judges scored it even at 114-114.
Davis landed 103 of 279 punches. Roach was 112 of 400.
GERVONTA DAVIS
“I think I pulled it out in the last three rounds for sure. I was catching him with some clean shots. I feel I was breaking him down as the rounds were going on, but he kept coming so I didn’t want to make mistakes and I kept it cautious. “I made it competitive to be honest. For sure, Lamont is a great fighter. He got the skills like I said before and the punching power. It was a lesson learned. Shout out to Lamont Roach and his whole team. Hopefully we can run it back in New York. Let’s do it again baby! “A little shit talking. That’s how it is when you are competitive. That’s how it is when you grew up in the sport together. Hopefully we can get a rematch. If not, all the beset to Lamont Roach and his whole team. “I just got my hair done two days ago and she put grease in my shit. So, the grease was coming into my face. It’s all cool. They love you, then they hate you. Then they love you again. You know what I mean?
LAMONT ROACH
This is every day for me. I ain’t gonna lie. I’m cut like this. I’ve been one of the ones and I came out here and showed it. I’m a little disappointed in the decision. I thought I pulled it out. That’s what two skilled fighters do, go in there and show off their craft. I definitely thought I won but we can run it back . Gervonta is a great fighter. I thank him for the opportunity to show all the people that were doubting me, all the fake boxing media and fans talking shit. That shit got flipped upside down. Even though I didn’t win tonight, I thought I did, but it’s a win for me in my book, but we are not satisfied with that. We need a real W. I told y’all in every interview single interview since the fight got announced. I put belt to ass. And you can see that’s what I do. I’m him. I’m one of the best fighters in the world and it showed tonight. It should have been a knockdown. If that was knockdown, I win the fight. He’s saying grease got in his eye, but if he takes a knee and the ref starts counting, it should be a knockdown. It is what it is. I’m not banking on that knockdown to win. I just thought I pulled it out. I want to run it back for sure. I hope you all enjoyed yourself. Thanks for loving me and thanks for hating me. I’ll be back on the grand stage again, where I belong.

My brother always told me, the difference between great and good is inches or centimeters and the ability to produce because that what it takes. “Valenzuela motivated me a hell of a lot. In this sport, you have to be dominant. You have to have a rough mentality, and he brought it out of me. I had the right dance partner in front of me and I’m glad he gave me the opportunity. I told him to keep that same energy because I’m bringing it in the ring. “My father would be proud of me. This is a steppingstone. This is a marathon. In a marathon, you come across the table with some water, but that’s just a pitstop so you can keep going to the next. I’m coming!”
JOSÉ VALENZUELA

Here is what the fighters had to say Thursday from Barclays Center:
GERVONTA DAVIS
“It’s showtime now. All the talk and all the work I put in. Come Saturday night, it’ll be a great fight. Lamont is coming in with his best and I’m coming with my best. Right here is the top of the DMV area on the stage. Even on the undercard. Gary Russell… We got great talent fighting on the card Saturday night.
“I want to be here and give it my all. I’m grateful and happy to be part of this event and be at this level in my career. Thank you all for coming out and see you all Saturday night.
“Barclays Center is like my second home since I won my first title in 2017. This is a great atmosphere in Brooklyn. Come Saturday night you will see.
“I’ve known Barry since I was young. He’s been in that space that helped me better my game and also as a person. Being around him is great. It’s good to have two top trainers come together, Barry and Calvin and even Kenny too. Having them all under one roof is amazing. I have coaches and teachers and things like that, so I soak up knowledge from them.
“I’m going to do me regardless. I think about what I’ve been through and what I’ve lost and go in there and get my man. It’s going to get bad. He’s been talking too much too, so we’ll see Saturday night. You know what I come to do and why I’m here. I don’t want to say too much. I’ll keep it polite. I know there will be fireworks.”
LAMONT ROACH
“I don’t have much to say. I’m here to boogie. Saturday night will be a hell of night. I’m coming with my tool bag. I have everything in my tool bag and I got a big bag.
“Saturday night, it’s going down on one of the biggest stages of my life.
“Everybody says I’m just here to show up, but when I do show up, I show out. That belt coming out. Hopefully he is bringing his belt too. That belt coming out.
“Thanks to Tank. He’s the cash cow and head honcho. He gave me the opportunity. Let’s boogie.
“I don’t care about outside critics. I know what I can do in the ring and that’s the only thing that matters honestly, that I go out and give it my all. Nine times out of ten, when I do that, I’ll be victorious.
“I take Tanks’ compliments very well. It lets me know he’s 100% focused and will bring his A game. That’s what will make it a great fight.
“Obviously, he’s here for a reason. He does what he’s supposed to do with the guy in front him. He has good skill and power and a good boxing IQ. All of that together makes for a good championship fighter.
“It would mean everything to be a two-division champion. That’s what I set out to do.
“If this fight breaks the last record, it’s because he has a better dance partner. Come Saturday, you will see. My prediction is ‘AND THE NEW!’”
JOSE VALENZUELA
“I’m happy to be back. Saturday will be an action-packed fight. Gary is coming to fight and I’m coming to fight. We both are in our prime. This fight sells itself. His record speaks for itself. He’s a dangerous fighter. I believe I’m a dangerous fighter too. I’ve put in the work and did everything I have to do to come out victorious Saturday night.
“Winning the title has brought me more motivation and discipline. I think I‘ve matured a lot getting this belt. I’ve gone back and worked harder than ever to show I’m here to stay.
“He’s a great fighter. He fights at his rhythm and he’s really good at what he does. Regardless of that, you know what I come to do. I come to fight. I’m explosive and I’ve got speed, and I’ve prepared for this fight and I’ll be ready on Saturday night.
“I believe I have a lot of different styles in me. I can fight inside or outside or in the midrange. This fight specifically, I’d like to do a little of both. Mix it up and fight on the inside, midrange and the outside, move forward. He comes forward, so why not give the fans an action-packed fight and steal the night?
“I’m here to stay baby. AND STILL!”
GARY ANTUANNE RUSSELL
“There’s a lot I could say but I’ll wrap it up quick. I’m a supporter and representative of DC for sure. Don’t ever get that twisted. I’m coming in here with a chip on my shoulder. I’m coming off a ‘L’ that I took more as a lesson not a loss. I shout out you all for keeping me uplifted when I needed to be. March 1 is right around the corner and we’re ready to get these fireworks popping. May be the best man win.
“He said I’m nothing special. I want him to keep that same energy on fight night.
“It’s a championship fight. That’s motivation enough. That should be something for both of us to make sure we’re on our A-game. I’m coming off a loss, so yeah, I got a chip on my shoulder that makes me want to be in the ring even more. I’m itching right now. I’ll be respectful, but this is definitely a sport that promotes violence. We’re supposed to be aggressive in this sport.
“May the best man win. I come to be in shape and be victorious. I‘m pretty sure he’s going to do the same. He got a game plan and I got a game plan as well. We’re going to keep it respectful, but in an interview he said I’m nothing special in what I got, and I took offense to that. That’s cool. That’s why I’m telling him to keep that same energy on fight night. It’s two days away. I’m itching. He’s itching. Let’s get it on.”
ALBERTO PUELLO
“I want to let you know that both me and my team are ready to give 100% out there. Our training camp has been amazing, and my job Saturday night will be to raise the Dominican flag high and represent my country with pride. That’s what I plan to do.
“The message? Simple. I’m among the best fighters in the 140-lb division. I’m going to defeat Sandor Martin and go after every champion in the division. Bring them on. Anybody, and I’m ready to face them.
“I’m not worried at all. In fact, I’m not surprised by what Sandor did because Mikey Garcia wasn’t really at his best when he fought Sandor and Teofimo Lopez is really nobody in the division. Right now, I’m focusing on myself and that’s what I need to do. I believe in what I do, and I’ll be ready on Saturday night.
“I’m ready for everything. It’s going to be a great fight. I’ve prepared so well. The fight can end any time. I’m looking to do so and I’ve prepared to do so.”
SANDOR MARTIN
“He is a good fighter, but I need to be confident in my skills and I need to be different in the ring than his other opponents.
“The last time I fought in New York, I only had three weeks to prepare for the fight. This time I have had more than six months. I’m here in the prime of my career.
“We have a very different idea of the result of the fight. I wish the best for them, and I hope they stay in good form because I’m in the best form of my life.”
YOENIS TELLEZ
“This is a combination of really hard work ethic, and a dream come true. I came to this country with only one objective in mind: to make Cuba proud and I feel like I’m doing that, right here in New York City.
“Yes, this will be my most difficult fight in my short pro career so far. Julian Williams is a skilled fighter who has a lot of experience, no doubt about that. But when I come into the ring on Saturday night, I will be hunting my prey. That’s what I plan to do. As far as a message for the division? A Cuban fighter is here to stay and is coming for all the titles.
“To be honest, if I fight Julian Williams on Saturday night, the way I think I can fight, it won’t be my hardest challenge. I’m not overlooking him, it’s just that in my mind, it’s not that way. I’m going to put my best foot forward out there Saturday night and that’s how it’s going to be.”
JULIAN WILLIAMS
“I think my skillset will be the X factor. I don’t rely on experience. Everybody has their own experiences. I’m relying on my mindset and skills and the work I did in the gym.
“I don’t care what he says. When the bell rings, we will see.”
JARRETT HURD
“I swear, I’m not the type of guy to make excuses. I just know who I am as a fighter… I know what it takes to be at the highest level, and I know if I can’t go out there and get past someone like him, I’m not naïve to the fact I’ll know what time it is.
“I will go out there and dominate him. If that’s toe-to-toe fireworks, if that’s moving around using my jab, it don’t matter. I don’t want to leave it in the judges’ hands, of course. I just feel like I want a clear win. I don’t want to have an iffy win or any questions. I want to have a great performance and a dominant win.
“I’m definitely going for a knockout. In my last fight against Rosario, I think left a little bit too much in the hands of the judges, so I’ll be leaving nothing to the judges and I’m trying to get the win by knockout.”
JOHAN GONZALEZ
“I am coming off a loss, but I do have a great opportunity in front of me right now. We’ve made adjustments and changes in training camp. You’ll get to see that on Saturday night. It’s going to be a different JG.
“I’m going out there to get the win. I want to make Venezuela and my hometown very happy on Saturday night. That’s the goal.”

Here is what the fighters had to say Wednesday from world famous Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn:
GERVONTA DAVIS
“The atmosphere at Barclays is always amazing. I won my first championship here and I’m just excited to come back here to put on a great performance.
“Training in DC was great. It was fun. It brought the amateur style back.
“Roach is in for a rude awakening, for sure. He’s trying to psyche himself up, but it comes down to skill. Whoever is the most skilled fighter will be the winner.
“Knocking someone out feels like a home run, when it hits the sweet spot of the bat, and it goes far. That’s how it feels for me.
“I want to stay in the ring more this year, hopefully with three fights. Roach comes first, and then we figure it out the rest of the way.
“You’ll see fireworks. I’m sharp, fast and explosive. Lamont is sharp too. It’s going to be a banger, and the fans will be the true winners this Saturday night.”
LAMONT ROACH
“The stakes are higher, but I just want to go hard, that’s about it. I’ve trained to be in the best physical and mental shape I can possibly be in.
“I’ve been doing big fights since I started out as a pro. The (Bernard) Hopkins undercard, Canelo (Alvarez) undercards…and the list goes on. I’m no stranger to any of this, and it doesn’t affect me at all.
“At the end of the day, there’s mutual respect between each other. But if he’s going to troll, I’m going to troll.
“This is everything for me, and becoming a two-division champion would be a dream come true for me.”
JOSÉ VALENZUELA
“It’s a beautiful feeling to be here in New York with these beautiful fans. I’m ready to defend my title on March 1.
“I have a big task ahead of me on Saturday night. I can’t overlook him, and I give him my respect. We are both coming to fight.
“I have a lot of things that he doesn’t in his arsenal, like body shots. Winning this belt has only motivated me to become stronger, faster and smarter at 140 pounds.
“My trainer has given me great confidence, and it just clicks. It shows with how I performed with my last few fights.
“We are two great fighters that are ready to put on a great fight and steal the show on Saturday night.”
GARY ANTUANNE RUSSELL
“I can’t give y’all the juice, but I know what I’m capable of and I’m ready to take the shine off of the main event. Stay tuned.
“Every opponent is different, and he forces you to use different tools. The main lesson I took from my last fight was that listening is important because you must be flexible and versatile. Lesson learned.
“There is nothing new that we haven’t seen. If we execute the game plan, we win.
“I feel like Valenzuela is only trying to pump himself up. I don’t care what he says. Keep that same energy.”
ALBERTO PUELLO
“To fight here in NYC in front of a big crowd that will have a lot of Dominicans in it is truly a gift from God that motivates me a lot.
“I don’t care if I’m not talked about, people know who I am, and I’ll keep proving that I’m one of the best at 140.
“To be a world champion and to have been able to recover what was mine to begin with is a dream come true. Few people can accomplish that.
“If Martin wants to knock me out, then he is making a big mistake. I don’t think that he has the strength or the tools to KO me, and he knows it.
“I would like to unify after this fight. I don’t have anyone specific in mind, I just want to face any champion out there.”
SANDOR MARTÍN
“I’m going to come out there looking for the knockout, ready for some exchanges and a true war that sees the fans being the true winners of the night.
“The Teofimo (Lopez) fight didn’t really leave any lasting lessons for me. It just showed me that I shouldn’t leave the outcome of a decision in the judges’ hands.
“A lot of people saw me as the winner of that fight, but now New York provides me another opportunity to fight for a world title.
“The 140-pound division is stacked with big names such as Valenzuela, Russell and (Isaac) Pitbull Cruz. I’m here for the big fights.”
YOENIS TÉLLEZ
“I don’t feel any added pressure. I do know that this is a big opportunity that I had been waiting for my whole career. I would like to thank my team and Luis DeCubas Jr. for giving me this great chance.
“I think that Williams could be the toughest opponent of my career, wanting to recover what he lost. But here comes Yoenis Téllez, eager to take over the world.”
JULIAN WILLIAMS
“Yoenis is a good fighter. I studied some tape from him. Hungry and can punch, so they say. I’m excited.
“The adrenaline is rushing, and the stakes are higher here. There is definitely a difference between fighting C+ and C- contenders and a world class fighter like me.
“Winning would be a dream come true. Regaining everything I lost in 36 minutes. That’s the goal.”

On facing Sandor Martin:
“Sandor Martin is going to be a tough challenge. He’s the number one contender for a reason. He’s got a smart and complicated style, but we’ve been studying him closely. On fighting in New York for the first time as a pro:
“Fighting at Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the first time is going to be special. I hear the energy in New York is different, and I know the fans are going to bring their passion. I’m very proud to be representing the Dominican Republic in New York and I hope the fans come out to see me do it in style. When I step in the ring and they see how I fight, I know they’re going to love it. I can’t wait to put on a show and give them a performance they won’t forget.”

BROOKLYN – January 23, 2025 – Fighters competing on the pay-per-view undercard for the Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach PBC Pay-Per-View event on Prime Video previewed their respective matchups during a virtual press conference on Thursday before they step into the ring on Saturday, March 1 from Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Featured during the virtual presser were WBA Super Lightweight World Champion José “Rayo” Valenzuela and top contender Gary Antuanne Russell, who meet in the co-main event, WBC Super Lightweight World Champion Alberto Puello and mandatory challenger Sandor Martín, who compete in a pay-per-view showdown, and rising contender Yoenis Téllez and former unified champion Julian “J-Rock” Williams, who meet for the Interim WBA Super Welterweight Title in the pay-per-view opener at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
Featuring four title fights and a bevy of the top talent in the sport, the pay-per-view card is topped by the five-time, three-division world champion Davis returning to Barclays Center where he set the building’s record for the highest-grossing and most-attended boxing event when he scored a highlight-reel KO of Rolando Romero in May 2022. He’ll now step in to defend his WBA Lightweight World Championship against the fast-rising WBA Super Featherweight World Champion Roach, who enters this fight on a six-bout winning streak.
In addition to the PPV being available for purchase on Prime Video in the US, UK, and now Canada — regardless of Prime membership — fans will also be able to continue to access the telecast through traditional cable and satellite outlets as well as PPV.com.
Tickets for the live event are on sale now and through ticketmaster.com. The event is promoted by GTD Promotions and TGB Promotions.
Here is what the fighters had to say Thursday:
JOSE VALENZUELA
“I’m excited to be back and keep my momentum going. I’m going to give the fans at Barclays Center a great show. This is gonna be a clash. We’re both coming to fight, so make sure you tune-in.
“It was a dream come true to become world champion. Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz is a great competitor. I just stuck to the game plan and stayed focused. I’m going to do the same thing March 1.
“I like this fight better stylistically. Against a short fighter like ‘Pitbull’ I had to fight on my toes, but against Gary I definitely think there’s going to be a lot of action.
“Stylistically, I’m tough for anybody. Some of the big names are gonna try to avoid me. But I’m not worried about that, because I have a tough competitor in front of me and I have to focus on getting this job done.
“Gary is a good fighter, but he’s nothing I haven’t seen before. He comes forward, double jab, high guard. I think I bring way more to the ring and I’m more crafty.
“I went right back to the gym after my last fight. Winning the title just added more fuel to me. Once you get a taste of it, you just want to keep going.
“I love everything about this fight. I think getting a win over Russell will open it up for me to get even bigger fights going forward.”
GARY ANTUANNE RUSSELL
“I have a chip on my shoulder and I’m definitely coming to steal the show on March 1 in Brooklyn.
“I’m grateful to be back. Listening to Alberto Puello really makes me want another shot at him, but first I know I can’t overlook ‘Rayo’. He’s a great fighter and I know he’ll come in with a strong game plan. It’ll come down to who is able to overcome adversity.
“The way I see it, I have a shot at something that can catapult me to a great position. I already see myself as an elite fighter. I took my loss on the chin. It’s all about how you bounce back. That’s what defines a true champion.
“Last fight I kind of deviated from some of the stuff I had been doing in the past. I’ve moved onto this fight and I’m ready to get back to what got me here. I want to clean out the division and I have to win on March 1 in order to do that.
“Valenzuela will force me to use some different movement than what I had to use against Puello. I don’t know if Valenzuela has a more suitable style, but he has a style that will make the fight more entertaining than against Puello.
“I’m coming in there with a chip on my shoulder because of the loss. I want to prove something in every fight, but this fight I have to do even more. I don’t want to just be mediocre. I have to make a statement.”
ALBERTO PUELLO
“This is a great opportunity for me to defend the world title that I worked so hard to win. Winning that title meant so much to me because it proved to everyone that I’m a real champion at 140 pounds.
“I’m not worried about anything other than preparing well for this fight. I have faced a lot of different opponents, and I know what I have in my arsenal. What Sandor does or doesn’t do does not concern me one bit.
“I have to win this fight and I have to win it with a big statement. I don’t think that I have the respect that I deserve yet. This statement will put the whole boxing world on notice.
“I’m focused on getting my foundation right in the gym. Sometimes I’ll have to be aggressive, sometimes I’ll be more tactical. In the end, that foundation in the gym is what will make me ready to defend the title.
“I would love to fight the winner of Valenzuela vs. Russell. I want to unify the division and then clean out the division.”
SANDOR MARTIN
“I’m better than Puello and his team think I am and I’m going to show it on March 1.
“It’s a pleasure to have this great opportunity to fight in Brooklyn. I’m here to show my skills and show that I’m first class.
“My best skills are in my mind. I can fight any style. Puello is a great fighter who wants to stay undefeated, and that makes me more motivated. I’m going to be at my very best on March 1.
“I have to get the victory and return home as a champion. I have the skills to win this fight and defeat Alberto Puello. If I need to fight like a Mexican warrior, I’ll leave my heart in the ring. I’m ready to do whatever it takes to become world champion and give the fans a great show.
“This isn’t just a normal fight. This is the opportunity I’ve waited for since I was a kid. I’ve earned it. The only thing on my mind is returning home as a world champion.
“I don’t like to talk too much before the fight, because we’ll settle it in the ring. I have no choice but to come out on top. I’m not worried about anything else.”
YOENIS TELLEZ
“I’ve had an outstanding training camp because I know what this opportunity means to me. This is the opportunity of a lifetime and I want to take full advantage on March 1.
“I wanted a challenge and when Julian’s name came up, I was ready to go. He’s an exciting challenge for me to work and figure out how to overcome.
“This fight is going to establish me in this division and show what I can do. Everyone will see after March 1.
“Julian has everything to gain and everything to lose just like I do. But my motivation is to get where he’s already been. I have to beat him in order to do so.”
JULIAN WILLIAMS
“I’m not dependent on experience. I’m dependent on skillset and being the best Julian Williams that I can be. Experience can actually be overrated. I’m focused on being prepared and being me.
“I want to be great. When there’s a gun, you don’t run away. You run toward the gun. That’s my mentality. I want to be great.
“We’re gonna see on March 1. He’s a good young fighter, but we don’t know too much about him. I let my team study his tape, and we just go in the gym and work on the plan. We’re fine-tuning some things and we’re going to show up March 1 ready to win.
“I’m taking it one step at a time. I’m ready to stick with it. Whatever my coaches put into the game plan, I’ll be ready to implement it.”

THREE TITLE SHOWDOWNS ADDED TO LOADED GERVONTA DAVIS VS. LAMONT ROACH PBC PAY-PER-VIEW EVENT ON PRIME VIDEO SATURDAY, MARCH 1
BROOKLYN – January 21, 2025 – Three title bouts, including two explosive 140-pound world championship showdowns and a 154-pound crossroads matchup between a rising star and former unified champion, will round out a loaded PBC Pay-Per-View event on Prime Video taking place Saturday, March 1 headlined by a lightweight title showdown between boxing superstar and reigning WBA Lightweight World Champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis and WBA Super Featherweight World Champion Lamont Roach from Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
WBA Super Lightweight World Champion Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela will take on hard-hitting top contender Gary Antuanne Russell in the co-main event, plus WBC Super Lightweight World Champion Alberto Puello defends his title against top-rated mandatory challenger Sandor Martin in a pay-per-view attraction. Kicking off the pay-per-view at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, rising star Yoenis Tellez will take on former unified world champion Julian “J-Rock” Williams for the Interim WBA Super Welterweight Title.
In addition to the PPV being available for purchase on Prime Video, regardless of Prime membership, fans will also be able to continue to access the telecast through traditional cable and satellite outlets as well as PPV.com.
Tickets for the live event are on sale now and through ticketmaster.com. The event is promoted by GTD Promotions and TGB Promotions.
“Saturday, March 1 will feature four title fights on a stacked PBC Pay-Per-View event on Prime Video with rising stars, knockout artists and established champions and contenders all looking to steal the show,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “In addition to the ‘Tank’ Davis vs. Lamont Roach main event, two 140-pound world titles will be on the line as ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela defends his belt against the always dangerous Gary Antuanne Russell, plus Alberto Puello begins his second reign as a super lightweight world champion against the top-rated mandatory challenger Sandor Martin. With fast-ascending contender Yoenis Tellez battling the established former champion Julian Williams to open the action, this card is teed up to deliver nonstop drama once again at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.”
**JOSE VALENZUELA VS. GARY ANTUANNE RUSSELL**
The co-main event will pit two of the brightest young stars in the 140-pound division against each other as WBA Super Lightweight World Champion Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela makes the first defense of his world title against the hard-hitting U.S. Olympian Gary Antuanne Russell in a fight scheduled for 12 rounds.
The 25-year-old Valenzuela (14-2, 9 KOs) became a world champion in his last outing, upsetting Mexican star Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz by decision in August of last year by showing off the tremendous boxing acumen he’s honed with his famed trainer Robert Garcia. Originally from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, Valenzuela had earned the world title fight following a pair of exciting contests against top contender Chris Colbert. After losing a debated decision to Colbert in March 2023, Valenzuela bounced back to blast out Colbert in round six of their December 2023 rematch, delivering one of the year’s top knockouts. Valenzuela burst onto the scene in 2018, quickly racking up 12 wins and a first round knockout of former world champion Francisco Vargas, before dropping a 2022 bout against top contender Edwin De Los Santos.
“I’m here to show the world what it means to be great,” said Valenzuela. “Bring me your most ferocious, and I will bring back their heads. On March 1 I will achieve victory against Gary Antuanne Russell and cement my legacy in the super lightweight division. Don’t miss it, because I’m making sure everyone knows where I stand at 140 pounds.”
Fighting out of his native Capitol Heights, Md., Russell (17-1, 17 KOs) has carried on the legacy left by his late father Gary Sr. A member of one of the sport’s preeminent fighting families, Russell trains alongside his older brothers, former WBC Featherweight Champion Gary Jr. and bantamweight contender Gary Antonio. The 28-year-old will look to capture a world title in his second attempt, after dropping a competitive decision to Alberto Puello in their June 2024 clash for the WBC 140-pound title. Going into that fight, Russell had not allowed an opponent to make it to the final bell since turning pro in 2017 following his run representing the U.S. at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. On his way to title contention Russell became the first fighter to knock out former world champion Viktor Postol and two-division champion Rances Barthelemy.
“I can’t wait to get back in the ring and display my skills,” said Russell. “Not everyone can perform when the heat gets turned up in the kitchen, but like Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson said, can you smell what we’re cooking? We’re gonna find out if Valenzuela is ready on March 1.”
**ALBERTO PUELLO VS. SANDOR MARTIN**
The pay-per-view action will also feature a second 140-pound world title attraction, as WBC Super Lightweight World Champion Alberto Puello puts his belt on the line against the WBC’s top-rated mandatory challenger Sandor Martin in another 12-round showdown. Puello vs. Martin is promoted in association with Top Rank and OPI Since 82.
Now a two-time world champion, Puello (22-0, 10 KOs) returned to titleholder status last June as he bested Gary Antuanne Russell by decision for what was then the WBC’s interim title, before being elevated shortly after fight night. Originally from San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic, Puello now fights out of Las Vegas, where he’s trained by top trainer Ismael Salas. The 30-year-old first became a world champion in August 2022, as he captured the WBA Super Lightweight World Championship with a decision victory over Batyr Akhmedov. Puello first shot up the rankings in July 2019, when he bested the previously unbeaten Jonathan Alonso via unanimous decision to capture an interim title.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment to defend my title and stamp my place in this sport,” said Puello. “Sandor Martin is a great fighter, but come March 1, I’m going to show the world why I’m the WBC Super Lightweight World Champion. This is my time, my stage and I’m ready to put on a show that fans will never forget. When we step into that ring, it’s going to be fireworks. I’m going to bring the best version of myself and do whatever it takes to leave with the victory. I’m doing this for the Dominican Republic, this fight is for them and I’m going to make them proud.”
A native of Barcelona, Spain, Martin (42-3, 15 KOs) was long established as one of the best current fighters from Spain before making his U.S. debut in 2021, when he sprung the 2021 Upset of the Year on four-division world champion Mikey Garcia. The 31-year-old has never been stopped in his career, and nearly earned another upset in 2022 as he narrowly lost a debated decision against two-division champion Teofimo Lopez. Most recently, Martin has earned back-to-back knockout victories as he stopped Arblin Kaba in six-rounds in July 2023 and Mohamed El Marcouchi in three rounds in December 2023.
“This world title opportunity is a long time coming,” said Martin. “A new super lightweight king will be crowned on March 1. Alberto Puello has some experience, but he won’t be prepared for what I bring to the ring in Brooklyn. That beautiful WBC belt is coming home with me to Spain.”
**YOENIS TELLEZ VS. JULIAN WILLIAMS**
Opening up the pay-per-view will be the rising Cuban star Yoenis Tellez taking on established contender and former unified 154-pound world champion Julian “J-Rock” Williams in a 12-round battle for the vacant Interim WBA Super Welterweight Title.
Trained by the legendary Ronnie Shields in Stafford, Texas, the 24-year-old Téllez (9-0, 7 KOs) made a big statement in action on Prime Video last October as he dominated veteran contender Johan Gonzalez before stopping him in round seven. Previously Tellez made his first big splash in the sport when he stepped in on short notice in July 2023 to blast out contender Sergio Garcia and earn a third-round TKO on the Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford undercard. Originally from Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, Téllez continued to rise in two subsequent bouts after the Garcia triumph, closing the show in style with a 10th-round TKO of Livan Navarro in December 2023 before earning a unanimous decision over the previously unbeaten Joseph Jackson in April 2024.
“I’m beyond excited for this showdown against Julian Williams on March 1,” said Tellez. “All the hard work I’ve put in since I first put on a pair of gloves at age eight has led to this point. This is my opportunity to prove that I belong with the elites in the super welterweight division. With that Interim WBA title on the line, I’m stepping into the ring with one mission, to win and show the world that I’m ready for the best. I’m going to give the fans a fight they won’t forget. My goal is to take him out before the final bell rings!”
Philadelphia’s Williams (29-4-1, 17 KOs) became a unified world champion at 154-pounds in May 2019 when he upset Jarrett Hurd in one of the year’s best fights, winning a close-quarters brawl by unanimous decision. After losing the titles to Jeison Rosario in his first defense, Williams moved up to 160 pounds and made a run at championship gold there, earning a shot against current WBC Middleweight World Champion Carlos Adames that he dropped via ninth-round TKO in a competitive affair. Williams stepped back into the ring in January 2024, stopping Gustavo David Vittori in round two and will now return to the 154-pound division looking to regain his titleholder status.
“I’m grateful and excited for this opportunity to showcase my pedigree on a big stage,” said Williams. “Tellez is a really good, hungry fighter, but I’m putting in the work to ensure that I come out on top come March 1. I’ve never been in a boring fight. I always bring it and this fight night won’t be any different. With both of our styles I think we have a real chance to steal the show.”

Tank Davis is back with another devastating KO
By Norm Frauenheim —Tank Davis looked vulnerable. The sign was there in an ugly bruise, going from red to crimson, beneath his right eye.
But the bruise might as well have been a mask.
For a while, it hid what has always been there. Davis’ quick-strike power is a dynamic that never stays hidden for long.
It struck all over again, this time dropping a gutsy Frank Martin onto his back alongside the ropes Saturday night in a devastating eighth-round knockout at MGM’s Grand Garden Arena in an Amazon Prime fight for the lightweight title.
“No question, I’m back,’’ Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) said. “No question.’’
No doubt, either.
Questions, however, were lurking after about 14-month stretch of no bouts and time in jail at home in Baltimore.
Martin hoped he had the ability to exploit them. And, for a while, it looked as if he might. He danced away. He moved inside, he moved outside with enough agility and courage to bruise Davis.
“But I knew, I knew, he’d tire out,’’ Davis said.
He did. Martin’s quick feet began to slow, round-after-round absorbing Tank’s wicked combinations.
At 1:29 of the eighth, it was finally over. Davis rocked Martin (19-1, 12 KOs) with a succession of punches. It looked as if Martin was ready to fall. Davis made sure of it with a left-handed shot that began at his hip and traveled like a menacing meteor in a direct strike on Martin’s exposed chin.
It was over, an exclamation point, a reminder of Davis’ pound-for-pound credentials and perhaps an even bigger opportunity to prove himself on a bigger stage against Vasiliy Lomachenko later this year.
Benavidez scores unanimous decision in 175-pound debut
It was a debut that demanded a difference.
A different David Benavidez.
That’s what he delivered in his first fight at a heavier weight against an experienced and toughened light-heavyweight.
Oleksandr Gvozydk, a former 175-pound champion, endured Benavidez’ whirlwind arsenal early and tested him with his own fundamental power later.
In losing a unanimous decision to Benavidez Saturday night at the MGM’s Grand Garden Arena, the Ukrainian didn’t tame The Monster in a fighter feared at super-middleweight.
But he did counter his evident mean streak with a durability Benavidez has never really encountered.
“I felt like I had a great fight against a great fighter,’’ said Benavidez, who also said he came into the fight with two injuries – a cut over his right eyelid and a torn tendon in his right hand – suffered two weeks ago. “It was a new weight, a different weight.’’
Benavidez left the ring with two things unchanged. He’s still unbeaten (29-0, 24 KOs). And he still intends to pursue a title at super-middleweight. That means Canelo Alvarez, of course.
“We’re going to go back to 168 and go after the title as a mandatory challenger or maybe if the title becomes vacant,’’ Benavidez said.
That of course, depends on what Canelo decides. But it’s safe to assume he was watching.
Early on, what he and a roaring crowd saw was the Benavidez they witnessed at super-middle.
He came out in the first round, shuffling, side
to-side while displaying some newfound head movement.
His father and trainer, Jose Benavidez Sr. had promised a renewed emphasis on defense and his son didn’t disappoint, at least not through the first three minutes.
In the second and third, there were moments when the 27-year-old Benavidez made the 37-year-old Gvozdyk (20-2, 16 KOs) look stiff, if not awkward.
The Ukrainian wasn’t exactly a stationary target. But he was there, in front of Benavidez, and open to a wide variety of punches thrown at alternating angles and speeds.
Gvozdyk couldn’t dodge them all. Benavidez’ punches are like debris in a tornado. They’re coming from everywhere. Example: In the sixth round, it looked as if Gvozdyk had begun to find his range with straight-handed shots.
They were beginning to slow down Benavidez. But in a momentary switch of momentum, Benavidez unleashed a triple shot – three right hands, each from a different angle and all three travelling at a blinding velocity.
From round-to-later round, however, Gvozdyk was there, an edifice impossible to bring down. Benavidez tried in an apparent attempt to fulfill his promised knockout.
Instead of a KO, however, there was only fatigue to go along with another victory in his introduction to a bout that also provided a reminder: There’s a reason for weight classes.
Puello scores SD over Russell/Tank-Martin card
Alberto Puello survived.
He survived a penalty for holding.
He survived a scorecard that suggested he never had a chance.
Turns out, survival was sweet.
Puello scored a split decision over a stronger, quicker Gary Russell (17-1, 17 KOs) for an interim junior-welterweight belt Saturday on the Amazon Prime card featuring David Benavidez-OleksansdrGvodzykand Tank Davis-Frank Martin Saturday at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand.
Puello (23-0, 10 KOs), of The Dominican Republic, won on two cards, 114-113 and 115-113. It was a close fight from almost every perspective but one. Judge David Hudson scored it for Russell, 118-109
It was a hard fight to watch. A hard fight to score, too.
But Carlos Adames (24-1, 18 KOs) did what he had to, keeping the World Boxing Council’s version of the middleweight title with a unanimous decision over Terrell Gausha Saturday on the Amazon Prime card featuring David Benavidez-Oleksandr Gvozdyk and Tank Davis-Frank Martin.
One-sided scorecards — 118-110, 119-109, 118-110 — make it sound as if Adames, of The Dominican Republic, had an easy day at the office. He didn’t. Gausha (24-4-1, 12 KOs) tested him repeatedly in the later rounds. But it was never quite enough for the middleweight from Encino CA to sore an upset.
Kyrone Davis scores split-decision over Elijah Garcia
Elijah Garcia made the weight.
But lost the fight.
Kyrone Davis (19-3-1, 6 KOs) took some of the promise out of Garcia’s ambitious career Saturday with a careful, yet effective pace Saturday, scoring a split decision over the Phoenix middleweight in a bout that was preceded by controversy.
Late Friday, there were doubts about whether the bout, already postponed once, would even happen.
Garcia missed weight, coming in at 165.4 pounds and then 163. Davis was at 160.4.
Davis trainer Stephen Breadman Edwards demanded that Garcia weigh-in again Saturday morning, a few hours before opening bell at MGM’s Grand Garden Arena.
Breadman threatened to cancel the bout if Gracia was heavier than 173 pounds in the morning weigh-in. He wasn’t. According to the official bout sheet, he was at 163.2. The fight was on, but the early pace belonged to Davis.
He came into the ring looking angry, perhaps anxious to take out some frustration on Garcia (16-1, 13 KOs). At opening bell, however, he exhibited only poise. He patiently measured the distance between him and Gracia with a jab. Then, he followed with repeated rights.
For four or five rounds, Gracia looked tentative, perhaps because of the weight controversy or maybe because of Davis’ tactical patience.
Whatever it was, the slow start proved costly. Davis won on two cards, both by 97-93 scores. On the third card, it was 98-92 for Garcia, who stepped up the pace and his level of aggression, especially from the seventh through the 10th rounds. The Arizona southpaw moved forward, trying to walk down Davis while also landing a succession of head-rocking combos.
But, in the end, it wasn’t enough to save Garcia from his first pro defeat, a loss and perhaps a lesson for a young fighter
Magsayo wins one-sided decision
Mark Magsayo (26-2, 17 KOs), a Filipino junior-lightweight, scored a third-round knockdown and then scored repeatedly over the next seven rounds for a decision — as thorough as it was unanimous — over Mexican Eduardo Ramirez (28-4-3,13 KOs) in the sixth bout on the Tank-Martin card Saturday.
After Magsayo rocked Ramirez with an uppercut and then dropped him with a straight hand, Los Mochis fighter continued, but never with much purpose or energy in what what turned into a dull bout.
Justin Viloria stays unbeaten, scores fifth-round TKO
Justin Villoria (6-0, 4 KOs), a 19-year-old junior-lightweight from Whittier CA, had all of the energy and most of the punches in overwhelming Mexican Angel Contreras Saturday on the Tank Davis-Frank Martin card.
Villoria knocked down Contreras (15-9, 9 KOs) in the fourth and again the fifth, both times with body punches. Seconds after the second knockdown, an exhausted Contreras took a knee, a TKO surrender at 2:02 of the fifth round.
Phoenix junior-featherweight impressive in pro debut
Hello, Brayan Gonzalez.
Gonzalez, a junior-featherweight from Phoenix, was impressive in his professional debut, scoring a first-round knockdown and staggering James Mulder again in the fourth in an afternoon bout hours before the Tank Davis-Frank Martin main event..
Mulder (0-2), of Antioch CA, never had a chance. Never scored a point either. It was 40-35 on all three cards, all for Gonzalez (1-0).
Benavidez-trained Blancas stays unbeaten with first-round stoppage
David Benavidez’ stable is 2-0 through the early fights on a card that will feature its star attraction Saturday night in a light-heavyweight debut against Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
Daniel Blancas (10-0, 5 KOs), a super-middleweight from Milwaukee, didn’t waste any time, flashing Benavidez-like power with a sweeping hook for a first-round stoppage of German Aro Schwartz (23-8-1, 15 KOs).
Ohio junior lightweight does enough to win majority decision
It was a hard fight to score. Neither fighter did much, but Peggy Whitmore (3-0), a junior-lightweight from Ohio, did more, winning a majority decision (39–37, 39-37, 38-38) over Mia Ellis (7-3, 6 KOs), of Baltimore, in the second bout on the Tank Davis-Frank Martin card
First Bell: Benavidez-trained featherweight opens marathon show with unanimous decision
First bell sounded like a morning alarm.
It echoed through an empty arena, signaling a noon-time start to a card that eventually will feature David Benavidez-versus-Oleksandr Gvozydk in a light-heavyweight fight and Tank Davis-versus-Frank Martin for the lightweight title Saturday at the MGM’s Grand Garden Arena.
Reina Tellez (8-0-1, 5 KOs), a San Antonio featherweight and a fighter in the Benavidez stable, got the marathon started, winning a four-round, unanimous decision over a taller, yet slower Beta Dudek ((4-2, 4 KOs) of Slovakia.

Here is what the fighters had to say Friday from the Pound 4 Pound Gym in Las Vegas:
FRANK MARTIN
“I feel like this is one of those moments where all the hard work I put in is paying off. With all the work I’ve been putting in leading up to the fight, and all the work I’ve put in over the years, this just feels like a life changing moment. This is my time to come out on top.
“I just need to be composed, be calm and be who I am. I can’t let any of the antics or crowd or the noise get in the way of me getting the victory.
“I feel like this is gonna be a good fight. We all know what ‘Tank’ brings, but a lot of guys don’t know what I bring. They know a little bit of it, but they don’t know the full arsenal I have.
“We know ‘Tank’ is explosive and fast. He’s got it all, but on fight night, the world will see that I’ve got it all too. So it’s gonna be two dogs in there locking up like pitbulls. The best man will win that night.
“I believe in myself, even if the world is against me. I know the work that I put in. I feel like I was born to do this. I feel it in my body. It’s just time for me to show up and show out.
“I expect Gervonta to come out and put his best foot forward. He’s gonna be him. I know he’s all the way locked in for me. I know he felt the energy from me and he knows I’m coming to win.”
ALBERTO PUELLO
“I feel really strong. It’s been a great training camp. I’m extremely ready to take advantage of this great opportunity that I have. I’m thankful to my team for putting me in this position and I’m going to show why I deserve to be here.
“Gary Antuanne Russell is a great fighter and someone who packs a lot of power. He doesn’t have many weaknesses, but I do believe that I’ve found his. I’m going to expose it and look for more when we’re in the ring.
“I’m very comfortable fighting against another southpaw. I’ve sparred against nothing but southpaws, so I couldn’t be more prepared.
“There’s nothing better than fighting on a card like this, with my eyes set on showing that I’m ready to earn another world championship. I’m representing my country of the Dominican Republic and I promise my fans that it will be a great show and that I’m going to win.”
CARLOS ADAMES
“I’ve always had that championship mentality, so nothing has changed for me now that I am the world champion. It’s just a matter of continuing to use that approach going forward.
“Gausha is an accomplished fighter who’s faced a lot of great opponents, but he’s never been in the ring with Carlos Adames. He’s going to realize what that’s like on June 15.
“I’ve gone to another level in sparring in training camp. Throughout camp I’ve felt myself exceed all of the people I spar. That’s how I know that I’m ready for this fight.
“At the level of conditioning that I’m at right now, I couldn’t feel any better. I’m sharp and I’m ready to defend my title in tremendous fashion next Saturday night.”

LAS VEGAS – May 20, 2024 – A pair of title showdowns will round out a stacked PBC Pay-Per-View event on Prime Video co-headlined by separate showdowns featuring popular superstars Gervonta “Tank” Davis and David “El Monstruo” Benavídez taking place Saturday, June 15 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. A jam-packed four-bout pay-per-view lineup will highlight the historic 100th championship fight night at the popular sports and entertainment venue.
Undefeated rising star Gary Antuanne Russell will take on unbeaten former world champion Alberto Puello for the vacant Interim WBC Super Lightweight Title, while WBC Middleweight World Champion Carlos Adames battles veteran contender and U.S. Olympian Terrell Gausha in the pay-per-view opener at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
Headlining the show is the undefeated three-division champion Davis defending his WBA Lightweight World Championship against unbeaten top contender Frank “The Ghost” Martin, while Benavídez is set to make his 175-pound debut against former light heavyweight world champion Oleksandr “The Nail” Gvozdyk in a matchup for the Interim WBC Light Heavyweight Title.
Tickets for the live event are on sale now and are available through www.axs.com.
The event is promoted by GTD Promotions, Sampson Boxing, TGB Promotions and Man Down Promotions.
“June 15 will deliver a lineup truly stacked with the best talent in the sport from start to finish,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “Already featuring Gervonta Davis and David Benavídez in intriguing showdowns, the card will also include the powerful Gary Antuanne Russell, as he makes his claim as the future of the 140-pound division against an undefeated Alberto Puello, while Carlos Adames can stake out his spot as the world’s top middleweight with another victory, this time against the always tough Terrell Gausha. This monumental display of talent is truly worthy of the 100th championship fight night at the historic MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.”
**GARY ANTUANNE RUSSELL VS. ALBERTO PUELLO**
The pay-per-view lineup will feature Gary Antuanne Russell, the latest star in the fighting Russell family’s dynasty, as he steps in for a 12-round showdown against former world champion Alberto Puello. The 140-pound clash will be contested for the Interim WBC Super Lightweight Title.
Fighting out of his native Capitol Heights, Md., Russell (17-0, 17 KOs) will carry on the legacy left by his late father Gary Sr. A member of one of the sport’s preeminent fighting families, Russell trains alongside his older brothers, former WBC Featherweight Champion Gary Jr. and bantamweight contender Gary Antonio. The 27-year-old has yet to allow an opponent to make it to the final bell since turning pro in 2017 following his run representing the U.S. at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. Russell defeated his most accomplished foes to date in 2022, stopping former champion Viktor Postol in February before a TKO win against former two-division champion Rances Barthelemy in July. Most recently, he blasted out the previously undefeated Kent Cruz in one round last August.
“Being at the top is only meant for one person, but the journey is always meant to have an audience,” said Russell. “Make sure you watch this pay-per-view on June 15, because everyone knows what I bring when fight night comes.”
Puello (22-0, 10 KOs) returned to action last December, his first bout since winning his world title, as he scored a unanimous decision victory over the previously unbeaten Ector Madera. Puello captured the WBA Super Lightweight World Championship with a victory over Batyr Akhmedov in August of 2022. A native of San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic, Puello now resides and trains in Las Vegas. Puello first shot up the rankings in July 2019, when he bested the previously unbeaten Jonathan Alonso via unanimous decision to capture an interim title. The 29-year-old also owns a unanimous decision triumph over VeShawn Owens in his U.S. debut that came in July 2021.
“It’s a great honor to be fighting on this platform on June 15,” said Puello. “I’ve been waiting patiently for a fight like this and now is the time to show the world that I’m worthy of the opportunity. Gary Antuanne Russell is exactly the type of opponent I want right now, because I know what a victory will do for my career. There’s a belt on the line and I’m coming to win it by any means necessary.”
**CARLOS ADAMES VS. TERRELL GAUSHA**
Recently elevated after making two defenses of his interim belt, Carlos Adames will step in to make the first defense of his WBC Middleweight World Championship when he faces the former world title challenger Terrell Gausha in a matchup that kicks off pay-per-view action.
Adames (23-1, 18 KOs) has become a force in the middleweight division as he looks to establish himself as number one in the historic weight class. The 30-year-old’s last outing saw him earn a ninth-round TKO of former unified world champion Julian Williams in their June 2023 clash. Prior to that triumph, Adames bested top contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko in December 2021 and followed that up by knocking out Juan Macias Montiel in the third round to capture his interim belt in October 2022. Adames was born in Comendador, Dominican Republic, lives in Washington Heights, New York and trains in Las Vegas. He established himself as a contender with a slew of victories over the likes of former champion Carlos Molina, Frank Galarza, Joshua Conley and Alejandro Barrera, with his only defeat coming by narrow decision in a 2019 154-pound title fight against Patrick Teixeira.
“I’m very excited to be back fighting in Las Vegas on a mega fight card, especially making the first defense of my WBC Middleweight World Championship,” said Adames. “Terrell Gausha has a lot of experience fighting at the top level in the pros and in the amateurs. I know this is a tough fight and that makes me focus even more in training. Right now my mind is right, my body feels great and I’m going to be able to put on a spectacular performance for everybody watching on June 15. I’m going to defend my title with everything I’ve got.”
A member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team, Gausha (25-3-1, 12 KOs) was born in Cleveland, Ohio but now fights out of Encino, Calif. and is trained by the renowned Manny Robles. He enters this fight having won his last two bouts as he knocked out Brandyn Lynch in March of last year before winning a decision over KeAndrae Leatherwood in September. Gausha has faced top competition throughout his career, having fought former champion Austin Trout to a draw in 2019 in addition to decision losses against former champions Erislandy Lara and Tim Tszyu and top contender Erickson Lubin.
“I’ve been training since way before this fight was signed and I’m feeling ready for the challenge,” said Gausha. “Adames is a good fighter, but so am I. I’m confident that I’m gonna come out on top on June 15. My experience and my skill set are gonna be huge factors that help me get this victory.”

Morrell Stops Agbeko in 6
Valenzuela Knocks Out Colbert in 6
In the night’s co-feature lightweights Chris Colbert and Jose Valenzuela met in an anticipated rematch that was dominated from wire to wire by Valenzuela. Colbert was blitzed in the first and hit the canvas early, needing to shift to survival mode to make it to the first bell.
Colbert had moments, and stood in valiantly for the duration of the bout but continued to eat power shots consistently with little resistance.
The action culminated with a devastating hook at 1:36 of round six that left Colbert laying motionless for more than a minute. The Brooklyn product was eventually able to rise to his feet and leave the ring under his own power, but would take home a KO6 loss to rival Valenzuela in the WBA eliminator.
al3nzGuerrero Decisions Berto
Showtime boxing veterans Robert Guerrero and Andre Berto met in a rematch ten years in the making to kick off the Showtime Boxing swans song at the Minneapolis Armory.
The meeting, as one would expect of two 40 year old combatants off of long layoffs, lacked the fireworks of the original classic, but Guerrero was able to bring the crowd to a rise in the fifth with a flurry behind a shoveling uppercut.
Berto continued to stalk Guerrero from a crouched guard but was not able to fire off the trademarked fast twitch muscle power punches that propelled him to elite ranks in his fighting prime. The two continued to trade spirited exchanges into the late rounds with Guerrero primarily getting the better of Berto. The fight was rounded out with an embrace dripping with mutual respect between the two former world champions and Showtime PPV headliners.
Scorecards read 98-92, 99-91 all in favor of “The Ghost”, Robert Guerrero.
Alberot Puello def Ector Madera via UD
Super Lightweights Alberto Puello and Ector Madera engaged in a tactical affair, with the former cruising to an easy victory. Puello worked the rust off of a long layoff cleanly, and was sharp behind a jab, creating distance and comfortably picking away at the Stockton, CA native Madera.
Scorecards showed a comfortable margin for Puello at 80-72 twice and 79-73
Kyrone Davis (18-3-1) def Cruse Stewart (8-3) UD 77-75
Kyrone Davis and Cruse Stewart engaged in a methodical battle for the center of the ring, trading flurries in the pocket, with Cruse opening strong in the first two rounds, but showing some fatigue in the middle rounds. Davis affirmed his presence with steady jabbing to put Stewart on the backstep as the fight entered the later rounds.
Davis was off his stool well before the beginning of the final round, signifying a preserved stamina heading into the fight’s conclusion. Stewart valiantly pressed forward with combinations, and even brought the Minneapolis crowd to their feet with a late rally, likely winning the round, but was ultimately smothered before a knockdown could be scored to bridge the scorecard gap.
Davis prevailed with a 5-3 win on all three cards.
Lawrence King (13-1) def Alex Theran (23-13) KO4 (18 seconds)
Lawrence King battered Alex Theran to the body with a crisp and sustained two fisted attack to move to 13-1. Theran absorbed the onslaught through three rounds but was clearly weakened by the offensive assault. King overwhelmed Theran 18 seconds into the fourth, scoring a knockout after dropping Theran prompting a halt to the action.
Michael Angeletti(10-0) Def Angel Contreras (13-9-2) UD 78-74 (3x)
Michael Angeletti and Angel Contreras traded shots in a back and forth affair over eight rounds. Contreras was game and had his moments, but Angeletti controlled the action, banking 6 rounds en route to an easy decision to remain undefeated.
Joey Spencer (17-1) UD Marcio Bzowski (11-25-4) 60-54 on all cards.
Joey Spencer controlled the pace of the bout for 6 rounds with a steady attack. Bzowski showed signs of fatigue but remained sturdy and could not be put away. Spencer advances to 17-1.
Charles Harris Jr(now 8-1) rtd Marlin Sims(8-3)
The referee waved off the action after Simms’ second knee in the 6th round. Sims took a glove to the eye resulting in obstructed vision. Harris hit a visually impaired Sims with a barrage that prompted a second knee, bringing a halt to the action in the 6th round

Puello (21-0, 10 KOs) will return to action for the first time since August 2022 when he captured the WBA Super Lightweight World Championship with a victory over Batyr Akhmedov. A native of San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic, Puello now resides and trains in Las Vegas. Pueloo first shot up the rankings in July 2019, when he bested the previously unbeaten Jonathan Alonso via unanimous decision to capture an interim title. He will return to The Armory in Minneapolis for the second time, after previously scoring a unanimous decision over hometown favorite Veshawn Owens in December 2021. He will face Bakersfield, California’s Madera (11-0, 6 KOs), who now resides in Stockton and who will step up in competition to challenge the former champion Puello. The 27-year-old has fought professionally since 2016, and has put together a pair of three-fight knockout streaks so far. He last fought in 2022, scoring victories over Timothy Parks in August and Alejandro Frias Rodriguez in December.
The 29-year-old Davis (17-3-1, 6 KOs) will look to pick up a second victory in 2023 after previously dominating Cristian Fabian Rios in January to earn a unanimous decision. That victory came after a run that saw Davis battle two-time champion Anthony Dirrell to a draw in February 2021, before stepping in as a late replacement two fights later to drop a hard-fought contest against super middleweight superstar David Benavidez. An amateur standout representing Wilmington, Delaware, Davis trains in Philadelphia under the tutelage of top trainer Stephen “Breadman” Edwards. He duels the Maple Grove, Minnesota resident Stewart (8-2, 6 KOs) who will look to bounce back from a pair of defeats to unbeaten rising contender Elijah Garcia and then-unbeaten Hakim Lopez in 2022. The 34-year-old turned pro in 2018 before reeling off eight-straight victories.
A native of San Bernardino, California, King (13-1, 11 KOs) is a frequent sparring partner of undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and enters this fight on a nine-bout winning streak. Since a narrow decision defeat in his fifth pro fight, the 27-year-old has stopped eight of his last nine opponents. King has already earned two victories in 2023, including most recently stopping veteran contender Marco Reyes after six rounds in June. He will be opposed by Colombia’s Theran (23-12, 15 KOs), who now trains in Lynn, Massachusetts. The 33-year-old turned pro in 2011 and has fought a slew of contenders including Anthony Yarde, Yunieski Gonzalez and Radivoje Kalajdzic.
Highlighting the non-televised undercard is talented junior middleweight contender Joey Spencer in a six-round bout against Argentina’s Marcelo Bzowski.
The non-televised undercard will also see exciting rising prospect Michael Angeletti (9-0, 7 KOs) step in for an eight-round super bantamweight bout against Mexico’s Angel Contreras (13-7-2, 7 KOs), unbeaten super middleweight Shawn McCalman (14-0, 7 KOs) facing Cristian Olivas (22-9, 19 KOs) in an eight-round duel and unbeaten super lightweight prospect Jose Chollet (2-0, 2 KOs) battling Lyle McFarlane (2-2, 1 KO) in a four-round matchup.
Rounding out the card is a pair of Mayweather Promotions rising prospects as unbeaten super middleweight John Easter steps in for a four-round fight against South Carolina’s Javier Frazier, while lightweight Charles Harris Jr. squares off against Minneapolis’ Marlin Sims in a six-round battle.

BATYR AHKMEDOV INCENSED AT ALBERTO PUELLO’S POSITIVE DRUG TEST
Los Angeles, CA (April 20, 2023) World ranked super lightweight Batyr Ahkmedov was incensed when he heard the news on Wednesday that WBA Champion Alberto Puello had tested positive for clomiphene, a performance enhancing drug and would be stripped of his title.
Akhmedov, (9-2, 8 KOs), lost a controversially scored split decision to Puello for the WBA title on August 20, 2022 in Hollywood, FL.
“We fought for the title last August and I knew something was off in the fight,” said the Los Angeles based southpaw. I thought I was winning the fight and hitting him with the harder punches, he was just trying to survive. But in life, things like this usually catch up to you. I hope that justice will be served and I can fight for the world title again soon.”
“Our fight was the last fight for both of us and looking back on it now, I’m very suspicious about what might have taken place. I’ve fought in hundreds of amateur and professional bouts and can see when another boxer just doesn’t look right.”
WBA 140-POUND WORLD CHAMPION ALBERTO PUELLO BATTLES HARD-HITTING ROLANDO ROMERO SATURDAY, MAY 13 HEADLINING SHOWTIME® TRIPLEHEADER FROM THE COSMOPOLITAN OF LAS VEGAS
LAS VEGAS – April 12, 2023 – Undefeated WBA Super Lightweight World Champion Alberto “La Avispa” Puello will make the first defense of his world title when he takes on hard-hitting contender Rolando “Rolly” Romero on Saturday, May 13 live on SHOWTIME from The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas headlining a Premier Boxing Champions event.
The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® telecast begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and features two additional super lightweight bouts with former two-division world champion Rances Barthelemy dueling the all-action Omar “El Relámpago” Juarez in the 10-round super lightweight co-main event, plus top super lightweight contenders Batyr Akhmedov and SHOBOX® alum Kenneth Sims, Jr., meet in a 12-round WBA Super Lightweight World Title Eliminator opening up the telecast.
Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions and Mayweather Promotions, are on sale now and available for purchase through Ticketmaster.com.
“Saturday, May 13 in Las Vegas lines up to be a fantastic three-fight card with intriguing matchups in the stacked super lightweight division, topped by WBA 140-pound world champion Alberto Puello defending his belt against the always-exciting ‘Rolly’ Romero,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “The former two-division champ Rances Barthelemy and young action fighter Omar Juarez will meet in an intriguing crossroads co-main event clash, while two of the 140-pound division’s toughest contenders, Batyr Akhmedov and Kenneth Sims, Jr., look to put themselves in position to fight for a world title opening the telecast.”
“This is a big opportunity for ‘Rolly’ and there’s no doubt that he’s going to make the most of it,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. “He’s focused on preparing to get back in the ring and I know that he’s looking forward to putting on a great show for the fans on May 13.”
A native of San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic, Puello (21-0, 10 KOs) now fights out of Las Vegas under the tutelage of renowned trainer Bob Santos, who also trains Puello’s childhood friend, former WBA 130-Pound World Champion Hector Luis Garcia. The 28-year-old captured his world championship in his most recent fight, earning a hard-fought decision victory over Akhmedov last August on SHOWTIME. Puello leapt up the rankings in July 2019, handing Jonathan Alonso his first career defeat with a unanimous decision victory that earned him an interim title. He was also successful in his U.S. debut in December 2021, as he scored a unanimous decision victory over Veshawn Owens in Owens’ hometown.
“I’m very grateful for the opportunity I have to defend my world title on SHOWTIME,” said Puello. “’Rolly’ has fought at the elite level, so I’m looking forward to testing myself and showing why I am the champion. I’m confident in my skills and I’m coming with everything I’ve got. This is going to be one of the best fights of the year, so make sure you tune in.”
Part of the Mayweather Promotions stable, Romero (14-1, 12 KOs) is known for his brash talk that he backs up with power in both hands as well as an exciting, unique style that makes him must-see whenever he steps between the ropes. Romero returns to the ring for the first time since a May 2022 defeat against three-division champion Gervonta Davis. Prior to the Davis fight, Romero won an interim title in August 2020 by earning a close but unanimous decision over then unbeaten Jackson Marinez. The 27-year-old followed that victory up with a pair of impressive knockout triumphs, dominating slick contender Avery Sparrow with a seventh-round stoppage in January 2021 before dropping former title challenger Anthony Yigit three times on his way to another seventh-round stoppage in July 2021.
“I’m excited to become a world champion on May 13,” said Romero. “Everyone knows what I bring to the ring. It’s gonna be an entertaining show. I hope Puello comes in 100%, because I ready to show that I’m an elite fighter in this division.”
A native of Havana, Cuba now fighting out of Las Vegas, Barthelemy (29-2-1, 15 KOs) returns after a defeat to Gary Antuanne Russell last July in which many believed the referee waived off the fight prematurely. A world champion at 130 and 135 pounds, Barthelemy owns notable victories over Argenis Mendez, Antonio DeMarco, Mickey Bey and Denis Shafikov. His only other professional loss came in a 2018 140-pound championship rematch against Kiryl Relikh. Barthelemy comes from a fighting family, as he is the middle brother between the younger Leduan and the older Yan, who won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympics.
“I’m looking forward to putting on a good show against a young, hungry fighter like Omar Juarez,” said Barthelemy. “I want to thank everyone who put me in this position and made this fight happen. At this stage in my career, it’s about building my legacy, and that means getting a knockout on May 13. My hands will be flying when that bell rings.”
The 23-year-old Juarez (14-1, 5 KOs) enters the ring propelled by momentum gained from his efforts inside and outside the ring. He enters the fight on a three-bout winning streak following a June 2021 defeat to All Rivera, including 2022 victories over Ryan Karl in February and Austin Dulay in December. A native of Brownsville, Texas, Juarez has achieved recognition in his community by uplifting the state’s youth through motivational speaking, receiving commendations from the Texas State Senate and the Texas House of Representatives for his altruism.
“This is the biggest fight of my life and I’m grateful to my team for making it happen,” said Juarez. “Rances brings a tremendous amount of experience to the ring, so I know that I have to make the proper adjustments as this fight goes on. I know if I win this fight, big doors will continue to open for me. So believe me when I say that I’m coming to win and win impressively.”
Born in Uzbekistan and now fighting out of Los Angeles, Calif., Akhmedov (9-2, 8 KOs) represented Turkey at the 2016 Olympic Games. The 32-year-old turned pro in 2017 and won his first seven pro fights, with six coming by knockout. Most recently, Akhmedov lost a narrow split-decision to Puello in a vacant 140-pound title fight last August on SHOWTIME, with his only other blemish coming in a 2019 action-fight against Mario Barrios.
“I’m looking forward to my return to the ring this May,” said Akhmedov. “My goal has always been to win a world championship and I have faith in myself. The fans know that I’m always in exciting fights, and this matchup is going to be more of the same.”
The 29-year-old Sims (19-2-1, 7 KOs) is one of the hottest fighters in the 140-pound division and can move one step closer to a world title with a victory on May 13. Representing his native Chicago, Ill., Sims has won six-straight outings dating back to May 2018 including triumphs over then-unbeaten fighters Elvis Rodriguez and Keeshawn Williams in 2021. Most recently, Sims dispatched Rock Myrthil in the fifth-round of their December 2022 showdown.
“I’m really excited about this fight,” said Sims. “This is what I’ve been asking for and will bring the best out in me. I believe that Akhmedov won his last fight and should be champion right now. This is not gonna be an easy task, but I will prove that I belong with the big names in the 140-pound division.”

Sergey Lipinets Stops Omar Figueroa Jr in Eight

Sergey Lipinets (17-2-1,13KO) stopped Omar Figueroa Jr (28-3-1,19KO) in the Main event of Premier Boxing Champions on Showtime Championship Boxing card, at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood Florida 1000 dollar loan guaranteed. Lipinets dropped Figueroa in round two, and continued to pick apart the awkward, hard-charging Figueroa. The rounds became more lopsided, and after the seventh round, Omar Figueroa Sr. said his son took enough punishment, and threw in the towel to save his boy. Lipinets, who took the fight on short notice after Adrien Broner withdrew, got his career back on track in this WBC super lightweight title eliminator. Figueroa may be looking to call it a career after his third consecutive loss, and the second one from this stool.
Puello Decisions Akhmedov to Win WBA Super Lightweight Title
In the Co-man event, Alberto Puello (21-0 10 KOs) won the WBA World Super Lightweight title with a razor-sharp decision over Batyr Akhmedov (9-2 8 KOs). This chess match was toe-to-toe for 12 rounds. The fight was very close, with many rounds that could have gone to either fighter. The last round could have been one of the more exciting rounds, leaving the fans at the Hard Rock Live restless for more. The final cards came in at 115-113 Akhmedov and 117-111 twice for Puello.
Hector Garcia wins WBA Super Featherweight Title with Unanimous Decision over Roger Gutierrez
Hector Garcia, 16-0 (10KO) lifted the WBA Super Featherweight strap from Roger Gutierrez, 26-4-1 (20KO) with a unanimous decision victory. Garcia beat the former champion to the punch in a chess match of a fight that heated up as it went on. Rounds nine through twelve saw much more action as both fighters had their moments of hard punching and flurries. The official cards were unanimous for Garcia reading 117-111 twice and 118-110.
Lee Gets of the Deck; Decisions Madera
Hard-hitting Brandun Lee 26-0 (22KO) was floored for the first time in his career by a huge right hand in the third round from Will Madera 17-2-3(10KO). Lee regained his composure, and finished the round. He went on to win nearly every other round behind a solid jab and a steady output. Madera had his moments, but it was Lee with the unanimous decision victory with all three cards reading 98-91.
Fiodor Czerkaszyn 20-0 (13 KOs) from Warsaw Poland knocked out Gilbert Venegas Jr. 11-2 (7 KOs) in round four of their welterweight fight with a huge right hand. Venegas was competitive in parts of the fight, however, Czerkaszyns’ pinpoint power punching was just too much for the product from East Moline IL.
Lenier Pero improved 8-0(5KO) with a first-round KO over Joel Caudle 9-7-2(6 KOs).
Super Lightweight Ismael Barroso improves to 24-3-2(22KO) with a KO4 (2:11) over rugged Fernando Saucedo
Super Welterweight Miguel Hernandez remains perfect at 6-0(6KO) with a KO3 (2:05) win over Anthony Hannah.

Light Heavyweight Robert Burwell 9-7 (3 KOs) was competitive in his scrap with the highly favored and former multiple-time national champion from Philadelphia Atif Oberlton 6-0(5KO). Oberlton kept the pressure from the opening round, winning nearly every frame working behind a stiff jab and a solid right hand. Burwell took all Oberlton would dish out, going out on his shield in the final round. Oberlton goes the distance the first time with a unanimous decision win with the cards read 60-54 twice and 59-55.

“Man, I’m going [through] a lot at this moment in my life, but I ain’t gonna give up. I set some more goals and I finish what I started but sorry to say this, but I’m not fighting August 20,” Broner said in an Instagram post. “Sorry to all my fans but Mental Health is real and I’m not about to play inside the ring … So, I have to step back and overcome this obstacle before I go put my life on the line inside the square circle again. The 32-year-old Figueroa (28-2-1, 19 KOs) is from a fighting family along with his younger brother Brandon, a former super bantamweight world champion. Figueroa has also fought at welterweight, earning action-packed victories over Robert Guerrero, John Molina Jr., and Antonio DeMarco. He’ll move back down to super lightweight on August 20 after back-to-back defeats against Yordenis Ugas and Abel Ramos. His match against Lipinets is a classic crossroads fight.
“This is going to be a great fight against Lipinets and I hope he’s ready for what I’m bringing,” said Figueroa. “I’ve made changes in my life and I’m excited to see the kind of fighter that I am now. I’m going to show what I can do now that I have a clear head and a clear path ahead of me. With the opponent change I’m even more ready to take all the frustrations and anger that have built up in camp and bring it into the ring on Saturday and come out victorious.”
Lipinets (16-2-1, 12 KOs) has been in training and was already scheduled to appear on the August 20 card before being elevated as a replacement for Broner in the main event. Born in Martuk, Kazakhstan and now living in Woodland Hills, Calif., Lipinets is no stranger to the main stage, having tangled with champions including Lamont Peterson and Mikey Garcia. The 33-year-old defeated Akhiro Kondo for the IBF super lightweight title in 2017 and lost the title to Garcia by unanimous decision in 2018. He is coming off a loss to Jaron Ennis in a welterweight title in April 2021.
“We’ve actually been in camp for almost three months getting ready for whoever they put in front of me,” said Lipinets. “We’ve been training with no particular opponent in mind. There have been a few different guys that have said they wanted to fight me. So, we’ve been sparring with and preparing for all types of styles. And now we get this great news that I get to fight Figueroa this Saturday. I can’t wait to show everyone that I’m still a force to be reckoned with at 140 pounds.”

ALBERTO PUELLO AND HECTOR GARCIA TRAINING CAMP QUOTES

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – August 12, 2022 – A pair of top contenders representing the Dominican Republic will look to secure world titles as Alberto Puello confronts Batyr Akhmedov for the vacant WBA Super Lightweight belt, while Hector Garcia faces WBA Super Featherweight World Champion Roger Gutierrez, in action live on SHOWTIME Saturday, August 20 in a Premier Boxing Champions event from Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla.
The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® telecast is topped by four-division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner returning to take on all-action former world champion Omar “Panterita” Figueroa in a super lightweight showdown. Coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT with Brandun Lee, one of the sport’s most exciting prospects and biggest punchers, taking on Will Madera in a 10-round super lightweight bout.
Tickets for the live event are on sale now and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com.
Puello and Garcia previewed their respective showdowns as they draw closer to their upcoming opportunity to achieve their world championship dreams. Here is what they had to say about those matchups, representing the Dominican Republic and more:
ALBERTO PUELLO
“I feel great. I’m focused on what has been an intense preparation with brand new challenges that I had never encountered before, but I am very satisfied with the results we have obtained ahead of the fight so far.
“This week is a lot more relaxed. We have been lightening our load as the fight gets closer. What’s left is keeping up our winning mentality, the one we always have, to then come out and shine on August 20.
“This is going to be the most important fight of my career so far, no doubt about it. The biggest opportunity I’ve had. I’m ready to seize it against a quality opponent that has given people a lot to talk about, that’s for sure. However, I’m ready to be crowned as champion and take the title.
“I don’t know much about Batyr Akhmedov. I saw his last fight against Argenis Méndez and the one he had previously against Mario Barrios, but not much more than that.
“My coach and I have Batyr studied up, having watched video of him, but that isn’t the most important thing for me anyway. I’m focused on me and on being 100%, because at the end of the day he could come out fighting in a totally different way.
“My family is currently in the Dominican Republic, and that is kind of tough for me. However, I talk with them every day and we are happy, because we know all of this is for the greater good and the future of the family.
“I expect this fight will be like my previous one and that I’ll be absorbing a lot of pressure from my opponent. I’ll be ready for it just like I was last time, since I’m a counterpuncher by nature.
“If I tell you that I don’t feel any pressure, I would be lying to you. You feel those butterflies, and that’s an awesome feeling, along with that commitment to make your countrymen and women happy by winning for your people. My mentality remains the same, I have to go out there and do my job.
“I have always felt the love and support from my entire country, and I’m sure that Dominicans will come out to show their support on August 20.”
HECTOR GARCIA
“I’m feeling good, very strong and in great shape. I’m in my optimal condition both mentally and physically. Now we are making the final touches and adjustments to be 100% on August 20.
“I’ve been thinking about what being in your prime is all about. I hadn’t had this kind of chance before, and keep in mind that I had always dreamt of being a world champ by 25, 26 years old, 27 max. However, my career has been an uphill battle that has taught me valuable lessons along the way while taking me on a wonderful ride I’m still enjoying at 30.
“I am my best self at 30 years old. The maturity, the experience, and the grit I have acquired through the years have brought me here. The time has come to take full advantage of this opportunity, and you would have to be crazy to think I am not about to take advantage of it to the fullest.
“The story will be the same as when I won last time against Chris Colbert. I couldn’t possibly thrill my family and my fans more than I did in my previous fight. It was sublime.
“I still train as if this was the last time I will ever fight. I never, ever take anything for granted, that’s forbidden. I train with the same effort and intensity as my first time, and I can’t afford the luxury of underestimating my opponent at any time.
“My preparation has been like night and day this time around with more time to get ready. Now I feel at 200%, while I wasn’t at 100% against Colbert. To be totally honest with you, I was more like at 80%. However, I knew that would be enough to defeat Colbert.
“I also did part of my training camp in Miami, and I felt right at home over there. The Dominican fans will definitely come out to support me, the mutual love was definitely there.
“My family is in the Dominican Republic, but my brother Oriolis García is always by my side. Their unconditional support is priceless for me, and I will do anything I can to make them proud.”

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – July 11, 2022 – Four-division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner, one of the sport’s most notable attractions and biggest personalities, will make his long-awaited return against all-action former world champion Omar “Panterita” Figueroa in a 12-round super lightweight showdown headlining action live on SHOWTIME on Saturday, August 20 from Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. in a Premier Boxing Champions event.
The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® telecast begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and will feature top 140-pounders Alberto Puello and Batyr Akhmedov squaring off for the vacant WBA Super Lightweight World Championship in the co-main event. Plus, WBA Super Featherweight World Champion Roger Gutierrez defends his title against unbeaten Hector Garcia in the telecast opener.
Tickets for the live event are on sale now and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com.
The two former champions present an intriguing contrast of styles as the flashy, technical skills of Broner match up against the bruising, volume attack of Figueroa. Both fighters have reached incredible highs and delivered memorable moments throughout their careers and will look to go through one another to return to championship contention.
Cincinnati’s Broner (34-4-1, 24 KOs), is one of the most popular and colorful personalities in the sport and quickly rose to prominence by combining supreme boxing with a brash outspoken personality. By the age of 26, he had captured world titles at 130, 135, 140 and 147 pounds, becoming one of only eight active fighters to win a world championship in four divisions. Broner has faced several multi-division world champions such as Manny Pacquiao, Paulie Malignaggi, Marcos Maidana, Mikey Garcia and Jessie Vargas. He most recently won a unanimous decision over Jovanie Santiago in February 2021 and now returns to the super lightweight division where he dominated Khabib Allakhverdiev to win a 140-pound title in 2015.
“I’m going in there to try to stop Figueroa,” said Broner. “I’m going to take the fight to him and go ahead and get him out of there. What I expect from him is the same gruesome Figueroa that we always see. He’ll try to make it a rough fight. Every fighter is different, but I don’t think he’ll be hard to hit. So, I’ll see ya’ll on August 20.’’
The 32-year-old Figueroa (28-2-1, 19 KOs) is from a fighting family along with his younger brother Brandon, a former super bantamweight world champion. Figueroa won the WBC Lightweight World Championship with a unanimous decision victory over Nihito Arakawa in a 2013 “Fight of the Year” and successfully defended the title two times before moving up to super lightweight in 2015. Figueroa has also fought at welterweight, earning action-packed victories over Robert Guerrero, John Molina Jr., and Antonio DeMarco. He’ll move back down to super lightweight on August 20 after back-to-back defeats against Yordenis Ugas and Abel Ramos.
“I’m excited to move on to the next phase of my life and career, especially now that my mental health is at the forefront of everything I do,” said Figueroa. “Having a clear mind has been the best thing to happen to me. Now I’m able to focus 100% on my boxing career and I can’t wait to be back in the ring on August 20.”
A native of San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic, Puello (20-0, 10 KOs) now fights out of Las Vegas under the guidance of renowned coach Ismael Salas. The 27-year-old leapt up the rankings in July 2019, handing Jonathan Alonso his first career defeat with a unanimous decision victory that earned him an interim title. Puello was successful in his U.S. debut in December 2021, as he scored a unanimous decision victory over Veshawn Owens in Owen’s hometown.
“I’m very committed to winning this fight for my team and my country,” said Puello. “I am more than prepared to make the most of this opportunity. My only focus is on earning this victory, becoming world champion and taking on all the challenges that come my way after that.”
Born in Uzbekistan and now fighting out of Los Angeles, Akhmedov (9-1, 8 KOs) represented Turkey at the 2016 Olympic games. The 31-year-old turned pro in 2017 and won his first seven pro fights, with six coming by knockout. His lone blemish came in an action-packed title fight against Mario Barrios in September 2019, where he was able to survive two knockdowns to make it a close fight, before eventually losing by decision. Akhmedov has rebounded to win back-to-back fights, including a stoppage of the typically durable former world champion Argenis Mendez in June 2021.
“I’m excited that I’m finally getting my shot at the world title again,” said Akhmedov. “I have worked very hard to reach my goal of becoming world champion. This time, I’m going to do everything possible to make sure that I take full advantage of this opportunity.”
The 27-year-old Gutierrez (26-3-1, 20 KOs) captured his world title with a unanimous decision victory over Rene “Gemelo” Alvarado in January 2021, in a fight that saw him drop his opponent three times. Gutierrez followed up that performance by defending his world championship and defeating Alvarado a second time in August 2021, again earning a unanimous decision. Fighting out of his native Maracaibo, Venezuela, Gutierrez is unbeaten in his last seven outings, including four knockouts.
“I am excited to return to the ring and defend my title for the second time,” said Gutierrez. “This is going to be a difficult fight, but I am confident in my abilities and my preparation, and I know I will be victorious. I am ready to show the world again that I am the best in this division.”
Tall and rangy with good power in his left hand and a dedicated body attack, the 30-year-old Garcia (15-0, 10 KOs) scored one of the biggest upsets of the year in February, when he stepped in as a late replacement for Gutierrez to defeat then-unbeaten Chris Colbert on SHOWTIME in Las Vegas. The 5-9 Garcia represented his native San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic, in the 2016 Olympics before turning pro in December that year. Along with his countryman Puello, Garcia is also trained by the highly respected Ismael Salas in Las Vegas.
“This is a very important fight for me because I have worked for so long to win a world title,” said Garcia. “This fight is for all of the people in the Dominican Republic. I can’t wait to display my skills for them once again on SHOWTIME. It’s also a very special night because me and my friend Alberto Puello will both be fighting for world titles, the first time two Dominicans will do so on the same night. We grew up together and had the same amateur coaches and now we have a chance to make history together.”

Morrell Stops Fox in 4; Retains Super Middleweight Title

David Morrell stopped Alantez Fox in round four to retain the WBA Super Middleweight Title at The Armory in Minneapolis, MN.
In round four, Morrell dropped Morrell with a hard straight left. Morrell jumped on Fox and landed a series of hard blows until Fox’s father/trainer stopped the fight at 2:06.
Morrell, 167 lbs of Minneapolis, MN is 6-0 with five knockouts. Fox, 167.4 lbs of Forestville, MD is 28-3-1.
“I love fighting here in Minnesota,” said Morrell. “This is a great opportunity to fight in front of my fans here. It really motivates me.”
“I was just listening to my team and following their instructions,” said Morrell. “We were just working in there, just like we do in the gym. They told me to let my hands go, so I did. Fox didn’t have the power to keep me off of him. So I knew that I had to take advantage of it. I felt comfortable in there and that made it easy for me.”
“I thought I won the first round, and in the second round I knew he was going to come out aggressively,” said Fox. “So I was trying to move and make it tough for him. We were holding each other on the inside and he came in with a good shot that dazed me. I was upset about the fight being stopped, but I know that my team has my best interests at heart.”
“I respect everybody in the super middleweight division, but I want to fight all of them,” said Morrell. “I’ve got this belt right now and I’m open to fighting any of them. They just have to step up.”
Puello Decisions Owens
Alberto Puello remained undefeated with a 10-round unanimous decision over VeShawn Owens in a junior welterweight bout.
In round two, Owens was cut over his right eye from an accidental elbow.
Puello landed 171 of 44 punches; Owens was 78 of 478.
Puello cruised and won by scores of 100-90, 99-91 and 98-92.
Puello, 142.4 lbs of The Dominican Republic is now 20-0. Owens, 143 lbs of Minneapolis, MN is 13-3.
“The strategy was always just to stay smart,” said Puello. “I knew that I just had to keep moving and execute my plan. As the fight went on, I could see that he wanted to fight toe-to-toe, so I adjusted and stood up to him.”
“I could never get in my rhythm,” said Owens. “I don’t know what it was, but I couldn’t get my timing down. I got him good a few times, but I couldn’t capitalize. He was sharper than I expected, but he wasn’t too fast or too powerful. I just couldn’t get my timing going. He was the sharper fighter and he knew what he was doing. He was game and I take my hat off to him. It was all me. No excuses, he was the better man.”
“I’m ready for all the top 140 pounders,” said Puello. “I’m just going to take it fight by fight, but they all know now that I’m ready for any of them.”
Jose Valenzuela remained undefeated with a 4th round stoppage over Austin Dulay in a lightweihhy bout.
Valenzuela dropped Dulay three times in round one and once in round two. The bout was stopped in the 4th frame.
Valenzuela, 134.6 lbs of Los Mochis, MEX is 11-0 with seven knockouts. Dulay, 134.8 lbs of Nashville, TN is 14-3.
“The game plan was to use my jab, touch him to the body and then finish him up top,” said Valenzuela. “I just stayed patient, took the shots he gave me and landed a good one. I was surprised he fell right away, but he showed a lot of heart.”
“I was surprised by the stoppage,” said Dulay. “I was starting to pick it back up and tag him with some shots. I rocked him with an overhand left at the end of the last round. Then they didn’t even give me an opportunity to fight.”
“I wasn’t surprised by the stoppage,” said Valenzuela. “I was going to stop him eventually and seriously hurt him. It was only a matter of time. I showed everyone that I’m a solid fighter and that I’m here to stay. I believe I’m the future of this game.”
Richardson Hitchins won a 10-round unanimous decision over Malik Hawkins in a super lightweight bout.
Hitchins, 143.4 lbs of Brooklyn, NY won by scores of 97-93, 100-90 and 96-94 and is now 13-0. Hawkins, 143.2 lbs of Baltimore, MD is 18-2.
Hector Luis Garcia won an eight-round unanimous decision over Isaac Avelar in a super featherweight contest.
In round one, Avelar dropped Garcia with a right hook. Avelar was never close to replicating that again as Garcia won all the following rounds.
Avelar, 129.4 lbs of Dominican republic won all cards 78-73 and is now 14-0. Avelar, 129.4 lbs of Mexico is 16-4.
Chino Hill and Suray Mahmutovic fought to a four-round draw in a light heavyweight bout.
In round three, Hill dropped Mahamutovic with a right hand.

PHOENIX – March 9, 2020 – Undefeated WBC Super Middleweight World Champion Davíd “El Bandera Roja” Benavidez will defend his title on Saturday, April 18 in his hometown of Phoenix, Ariz. against former world title challenger Roamer Alexis Angulo, live on SHOWTIME from Arizona Federal Theatre headlining a Premier Boxing Champions event.
The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® telecast begins at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT and features rising lightweight prospect Michel Rivera taking on Mexico’s Marcos Villasana Jr. in a WBC Lightweight Title Eliminator in the co-main event. Interim WBA Super Lightweight titlist Alberto Puello faces two-division world champion Rances Barthelemy in the televised opener.
One of the sport’s brightest young stars, Benavidez kicks off his second reign as WBC Super Middleweight Champion by returning to fight in his native Phoenix for the first time since 2015, when he knocked out Ricardo Campillo in just his 10th pro fight.
“On Saturday, April 18, Phoenix’s own super middleweight world champion Davíd Benavidez will return home looking to thrill his hometown fans at Arizona Federal Theatre and further cement his positioning in the 168-pound division,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “Benavidez can expect a strong challenge from the exciting Roamer Alexis Angulo, which should create an action-packed main event live on SHOWTIME. Two more fights with title implications add to the intrigue, with fast-rising Michel Rivera barreling toward a championship and two-division champion Rances Barthelemy hoping to pry the title away from Alberto Puello.”
“From the start of his career, long before he became champion, people have been asking me about Davíd fighting at home,” said Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing. “Now is the perfect time and I’m very happy to help bring this show to Davíd’s hometown. I have no doubt it will not only be a great event; it will also be packed with thousands of fans of ‘El Bandera Roja’ Benavidez.”

In the co-main event, we have yet another boxing prodigy in undefeated 21-year-old rising star Michel Rivera, who is facing his most challenging opponent to date in Marcos Villasana. To round out the card, we will yet another undefeated young rising star in 25-year-old Alberto Puello, who takes on battle-tested veteran Rances Barthelemy.”
Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions and Sampson Boxing, are on sale now and can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com and at Arizona Federal Theatre box office.
The 23-year-old Benavidez (22-0, 19 KOs) defends his belt after defeating two-time super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell in September, stopping him in nine rounds. Benavidez is trained by his father José Sr., alongside his brother and former title challenger, José Jr. In 2017, he became the youngest super middleweight champion in boxing history by defeating Ronald Gavril on SHOWTIME at just 20 years old. Benavidez went from a 15-year-old prodigy sparring with Gennady Golovkin and Peter Quillin, to world title contender with a 10-fight knockout streak from 2015 through 2017, including a highlight-reel knockout of Rogelio Medina with a seven-punch combination that earned him his first championship.
“I’m very excited to be fighting Angulo on SHOWTIME and in front of my hometown crowd,” said Benavidez. “I haven’t fought in Phoenix in five years. It’s exciting to be back. I expect Angulo to come in ready. I know he just pulled an upset in his last fight and he’s not taking any shortcuts, but neither am I. Angulo has never been stopped, so I want to be the first person to stop him. I feel like I’m more motivated with a hungry fighter like him in front of me, and you will see it in my performance.”
Born in El Bordo, Colombia and now fighting out of Miami, Fla., Angulo (26-1, 22 KOs) enters his second world title opportunity on a three-fight winning streak, including two triumphs over previously unbeaten fighters. Angulo stopped Reinaldo Gonzalez in 2018 in his first fight since losing a decision to then-super middleweight champion Gilberto Ramirez earlier that year. He scored a decision victory this January over Anthony Sims Jr. to put himself in position to again challenge the best in the division.
“I’m very motivated by this great opportunity to fight for the world title again,” said Angulo. “Benavidez is a talented world champion who is clearly one of the best super middleweights in the world. This is going to be a great fight for the fans because of the style I bring to the ring. My Mexican style of fighting will be too much for Benavidez and I will have my hand raised on April 18.”
Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and now living in Miami, the 21-year-old Rivera (18-0, 12 KOs) made his U.S. debut on ShoBox in June of 2019 by scoring an impressive unanimous decision victory against then-unbeaten Rene Tellez Giron, who would go on to upset Karlos Balderas in his next fight. The explosive rising star then followed up by stopping Jose Luis Gallegos in September and scoring a vicious 10th-round TKO against Fidel Maldonado Jr. in February of 2020.
Villasana (25-6, 14 KOs) is the son of former featherweight champion Marcos Villasana, and fights out of Acapulco, Mexico. The 28-year-old will make his U.S. debut on April 18 riding a 10-fight winning streak that includes five knockouts. He most recently picked up two victories in 2019, defeating then-unbeaten Roman Villa in April before knocking out Javier Franco in August.
Representing his home of San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic, Puello (17-0, 9 KOs) will make his U.S. debut on April 18 when he faces Barthelemy. The 25-year-old has fought professionally since 2015, defeating a slew of regional contenders and prospects. His most recent fight saw him defeat 2012 Olympian and then-unbeaten Jonathan Alonso by 12-round decision to capture his interim 140-pound title.
A decorated Cuban amateur who hails from a boxing family, Barthelemy (27-1-1, 14 KOs) is moving back to super lightweight after fighting former champion Robert Easter Jr. to a draw in their April 2019 lightweight title fight. The 33-year-old now trains in Las Vegas and has won titles in two weight classes, defeating Argenis Mendez for a 130-pound crown in 2014 and Denis Shafikov for a 135-pound belt in 2015. Barthelemy will look to work his way toward a second world title shot at 140 pounds, which could make him the first three-division champion from Cuba.
Veteran broadcaster Brian Custer will serve as telecast host with versatile combat sportscaster Mauro Ranallo calling the action alongside Hall of Fame analyst Al Bernstein and former two-division world champion Paulie Malignaggi. Rounding out the telecast team are Emmy® award-winning reporter Jim Gray, unofficial ringside scorer Steve Farhood and world-renowned ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr. David Dinkins Jr. serves as Executive Producer with Ray Smaltz producing and Bob Dunphy directing.
