Rene “Gemelo” Alvarado (23-7, 16 KOs) has been upgraded to the main event on the
Estrella TV Boxeo Estelar, broadcast on July 15. The originally scheduled fight between
Alfonso Gomez vs. Pablo Cesar Cano has been cancelled due to Gomez sustaining an elbow injury earlier this week.

Live from Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, the event will feature a new televised co-main event between undefeated prospect Rashidi “Speedy” Ellis (15-0, 11 KOs) of Boston and Luis “La Roca” Hernandez (12-1, 7 KOs) of Rio Pierdas, Puerto Rico in a eight-round super welterweight fight. Decorated amateur, Cesar Diaz of Palmdale, Calif. will make his professional debut and open up the Estrella TV broadcast in a scheduled four-round super bantamweight fight.

Part of the non-televised undercard and streaming on RingTVLive.com, Azat Hovanissyan (8-2, 7 KOs) of Glendale, Calif. will participate in a six-round super bantamweight fight against Sacramento’s Mario Ayala (4-2-1, 1 KOs) and Indio, Calif.’s Marco Magdaleno (3-0, 2 KOs) will face Hugo Padilla (3-6, 2 KOs) of Aguascalientes, Mexico in a four-round lightweight bout. Hailing from Juncos, Puerto Rico, 28-year-old Jayson “La Maravilla” Velez has been a fine representative of the Caribbean’s fighting capital since turning professional in 2007. Former owner of the WBC Interim Silver, WBC FECARBOX and USNBC titles over the years, Velez has made his mark with victories over the likes of Salvador “Sal II” Sanchez, Dat “Dat Be Dat” Nguyen and Daniel “Huracan” Ramirez, as well as a draw in an IBF title bout against Evgeny “El Russo Mexicano” Gradovich. On Nov. 21, 2015 Velez opened up the pay-per-view telecast of Miguel Cotto vs. Canelo Alvarez against Ronny Rios and suffered his first professional defeat via decision and took on Joseph “Jojo” Diaz Jr. in March 2016 and suffered another loss via decision. Now, looking for redemption, Velez will be hungry to get back in the winners column and title race when he takes on one of the toughest fighters coming out of Nicaragua in Rene Alvarado on July 15.

Managua, Nicaragua’s Rene “Gemelo” Alvarado comes into the ring with much experience under his belt, owning several titles over the course of nearly eight years. “Gemelo” has earned the respect from his peers and boxing fans all over the world for his hard-nosed style and willingness to fight all. The 27 year old’s biggest win was the complete stoppage at the ninth-round of current top featherweight contender Robinson “Robin Hood” Castellanos in 2014 which earned him the WBC Silver Featherweight Championship. Alvarado last faced Manuel “Tino” Avila in April 2016, losing via decision to the rising contender in Los Angeles. Ready for another shot at championship gold, Alvarado will leave it all in the ring taking on Jayson Velez on July 15.

Undefeated welterweight Rashidi “Speedy” Ellis may have the nickname “Speedy,” but it’s his punching power that has been leading him to victory as of late. Winner of four straight fights by knockout, the 23-year-old most recently dispatched Victor “Pambele” Gonzalez in four rounds to win the vacant WBA Fedecentro and interim WBC Latino Welterweight titles. On May 7, he made his Las Vegas debut on one of the biggest sporting events of 2016, when he faced Marco Antonio Lopez on the non-televised undercard of Canelo vs. Khan on May 7 at the new state-of-the-art T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Both fighters brought their “A” game, with Ellis hungry and on the prowl in the ring. Ellis dominated the fight, using good movement and effectively landing his combination blows. With a unanimous decision of 80-72 awarded by all three judges, Rashidi Ellis was able to maintain his undefeated status.

Making his return to the U.S. after four-years, Luis “La Roca” Hernandez will be looking to maintain his undefeated streak of 2016 when he takes on top prospect Rashidi Ellis on July 15. Hernandez, was last seen in the ring against Jose Miguel Torres defeating the fight veteran via unanimous decision and Jean Pablo Batista via technical knockout in the first round. A professional since 2010 and back in the fight game after a lone defeat against welterweight top contender Eddie “E-Boy” Gomez in 2012, Hernandez is ready to begin his climb to the top of the division.

Jayson Velez vs. Rene Alvarado is a 10-round super featherweight fight presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate, BORN BOLD. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. and the first bell rings at 5:30 p.m. The Boxeo Estelar broadcast will air live on Estrella TV at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT. GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS’ IRISH FIGHTERS JAMIE KAVANAGH AND JASON QUIGLEY REFLECT ON CELEBRATING ST. PATRICK’S DAY IN THE U.S.

LOS ANGELES (March 17) – Golden Boy Promotions’ Irish fighters Jamie Kavanagh (17-1-1, 8 KOs), a native of Dublin, and Jason Quigley (4-0, 4 KOs), a native of Donegal, Ireland, are in camp, training hard to prepare for the Friday, March 20 fight on the undercard for Kamegai vs. Gomez at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. Kavanagh, a former Irish national championship fighter, is set for an eight-round televised lightweight match against power puncher Miguel Zamudio (29-6-1, 17 KOs) of Los Mochis, Mexico airing live on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes on March 20. The same night, Irish and European championship fighter Quigley (4-0, 4 KOs), fresh off his March 6 victory at LA FIGHT CLUB, will face an opponent yet to be named in a six-round middleweight television swing bout.

We asked them what it’s like to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in America as Irishmen living abroad in the U.S. pursuing professional boxing careers and their plans for March 17.

What does St. Patrick’s Day mean for an Irishman living in the US?

JAMIE KAVANAGH: “People always ask that question around St. Patrick’s Day here in the U.S. but they don’t realize that actually the holiday in, say, Boston and New York, which has a rich Irish heritage, is a bigger day than back in Dublin, Ireland. It is great be at home with family and friends and celebrate the festive event. There is a lot of buzz around the city and a lot happening, but for me this year, I’m here in the desert in Indio. There isn’t much going on here for the holiday.”

JASON QUIGLEY: “This is going to be my first experience in the U.S. on St. Patrick’s Day. I’m interested to see the difference in how it’s celebrated in both countries. It’s exciting, and I’m looking forward to it!”

How do you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day or do you have any plans to celebrate this year?

JAMIE KAVANAGH: “Yes, I have some friends coming into town for St. Patrick’s Day, especially because my fight on March 20 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino falls in the same week. I’ll be dieting and sheading the pounds, and I will try my best to keep in St. Patrick’s Day spirit around my friends. We’re going to go to an Irish restaurant to have a traditional meal of corned beef and cabbage.”

JASON QUIGLEY: “This past weekend I went to Long Beach to attend the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and met up with some other Irish friends that are living in the U.S., too. But, on St. Patrick’s Day itself, I’ll be in the gym, preparing for my upcoming fight on March 20.”

What will a win on the March 20card mean for you and any family you have back in Ireland?

JAMIE KAVANAGH: “We will all be delighted to have the win on March 20. Since I fight the same week as the holiday, my family will keep the festivities going through fight night and will be tuning into FOX Sports1 to watch me take the win.”

JASON QUIGLEY: “As always I’ll be very proud and so will my family and friends back home. This is what I’m here in the U.S. for and every fight means just as much to me. They are all stepping stones to becoming a world champion.”

How does your family back home celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?

JAMIE KAVANAGH: “My family gathers to watch the St. Patrick’s Day parade and fireworks, it’s a family tradition. It’s really about the kids and helping them celebrate the day. There’s so much for them to do, there is also a fair and everyone will be dressed in green and flying the flag on that day. I will be deep in training, but I’ll make up for it when I return home after my fight.”

JASON QUIGLEY: “Everybody goes to the parades. There’s one in every town and there is huge turnout for them. I led the St. Patrick’s Day parade through my hometown last year. Everybody wears green, and the pubs are filled with people and the sound of Irish music; it’s a great “craic” (crack)! I hear there may be snow back home, so it’s going to be a cold one.”

Kamegai vs. Gomez is a 10-round super welterweight bout promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona Extra and Mexico – Live It To Believe It!. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the ?rst bell rings at 6 p.m. The FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes broadcast airs live at 11 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. PT.

Mexico-native and California transplant Alfonso Gomez rose to recognition in the U.S. while competing on the hit reality TV show “The Contender” on NBC in 2004. He ranked third of the show’s 16 fighters that were competing for a one million dollar cash prize. Gomez is an intense fighter who has taken on some of the toughest fighters in the sport, Shawn Porter, Canelo Alvarez, Miguel Cotto and Jesus Soto Karass. Most recently, Gomez won via unanimous decision over Ed Paredes at the Hard Rock Hotel Casino, Las Vegas in July and hopes to add another win to his record when he meets Kamegai on March 20.

Born in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, Yoshihiro Kamegai began his professional career nearly 10 years ago and quickly became known as a fast and sly slugger, scoring knockout after knockout. He made his U.S. boxing debut in 2011, securing a victory over Hector Munoz at the MGM Grand and most recently scored a knockout victory over Oscar Godoy in December at the same venue. Kamegai, a relative newcomer in the U.S. boxing scene, first captured the American audience and critics’ attention when he fought two-division world titlist Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero in a vicious brawl last June that garnered considerable ‘Fight of the Year’ interest. Kamegai will make his sixth U.S. appearance on March 20 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in his toughest match to date against former world title contender Alfonso Gomez.

Ronny Rios made his professional debut six years ago and has quickly racked up wins and a tough reputation along the way. A familiar face at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, Rios has won all but his most recent surprising loss in a vicious battle against Robinson Castellanos at the venue. He makes his return March 20 with great determination and hope to show his fans and boxing critics that he is a mainstay in the sport.

Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico’s Jesus “Kalaka” Navarro is a seasoned fighter ready to take on Rios on March 20. A professional since 2006, the Mexican brawler has had a successful career in his native country and is now making his second appearance in the U.S. after facing contenders like Julio Barraza, Jesus Lopez, and Francisco C De Vaca. In his first fight of 2015, Navarro hopes to add another win to his record and get back on track to a title match.

Irish national champion Jamie “The Nuisance” Kavanagh has a natural talent and knack for the sport, having competed since age 11 only a year after he first set foot in the ring. After racking up medals in international competitions, Kavanagh made his way to the U.S. and made his professional debut at Madison Square Garden in May 2010, with an impressive win over William Ware after just two rounds. 2014 was a good year for Kavanagh as he secured quick wins against Andres Navarro and Michael Clark and hopes to continue the winning streak when he makes his third appearance at Fantasy Spring Resort Casino on March 20.

Featherweight rising star, Abraham Lopez, of La Puente, Calif., first laced up the gloves at age six, and hasn’t put them down since. Lopez, started off his professional career in 2008 with a first round technical knockout of Albert Soto and continues to thrill fight fans with his impressive style. Most recently the undefeated fighter faced Gabriel Tomlmajyan winning via unanimous decision on March 16. On March 20, Lopez will put his undefeated record on the line once again in hopes to one day get a shot at a world title.

Born and raised in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Juan Carlos “El Pez” Martinez is a seasoned fighter still looking for his shot at a title. Having fought over 36 fights in his career and most recently facing contenders like Edner Cherry, Alejandro Perez and Jose Pedraza, “El Pez” has proven to be a feared contender in the sport. Gomez decisions Paredes

FIGHT5-
Alfonso Gomez suffered two dubious knockdowns but was able to dominate Ed Paredes in a Jr. Middleweight bout at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

Gomez was controlling the action by boxing over the first three-plus rounds. At the end of round four, Paredes landed a little bunch while Gomez was off balance and Gomez fell to the canvas and it was scored a knockdown. Paredes got his left hook on track in round five as he landed a pair of them to the side of the head.

In round six, it was deja vu for Gomez as he threw a right hand that took him off balance but Paredes landed a small shot that sent Gomez for the second fringe knockdown. Gomez came back to have a solid round eight and even stun Paredes. Gomez was never threatened during the fight and cruised home to the victory by scores of 99-92, 98-92 and 96-93.

Gomez, 150.2 lbs of Guadalajara, MX is now 24-6-2. Paredes, 150 lbs of Lawrence, MA is now 35-4-1.

FIGHT4-
Joseph Diaz Jr. pounded out a 10-round unanimous decision over Ramiro Robles in a Featherweight bout.

Diaz landed a hard combination in round one. Diaz was the faster puncher and landed the harder blows that saw a lot of two-way action and Robles was able to get in a fair amount of effective offense.

Diaz, 123.6 lbs of South El Monte, CA won by scores of 99-91 twice and 98-92. Robles, 124 lbs of Guanajuato, MX is now 11-2-1.

Fight Network’s broadcast will air exclusively in Canada.

Plus, 2012 U.S. Olympian Joseph “JoJo” Diaz competes in his first 10-round featherweight bout against Guanajuato up-and-comer Ramiro “Zurdo” Robles and 19-year-old phenom Diego “The Golden Kid” De La Hoya risks his unbeaten record against veteran Miguel Tamayo in a six-round junior featherweight bout.

Gomez vs. Paredes is a 10-round junior middleweight bout presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona and O’Reilly Auto Parts. Fight Network’s live broadcast airs at 10 p.m. ET.

A popular action fighter who always leaves the fans happy, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico veteran Alfonso Gomez (23-6-2, 12 KOs) first made his name in the boxing world with his run on season one of the popular boxing reality series The Contender. Since then, the 33-year-old has fought the best of the best, including a big win over Hall of Famer Arturo Gatti in 2007. Winner of five of his last seven, with the only losses coming to current World Champions Canelo Alvarez and Shawn Porter, Gomez looks to get back in the title hunt in his first fight since July of 2012.

Ranked number seven in the world by the WBC, ninth by the IBF and 10th by the WBA, Hollywood, Florida’s Ed “The Lion” Paredes (35-3-1, 23 KOs) is rapidly closing in on a world title shot, but he has to get past Alfonso Gomez to keep his momentum going. Unbeaten in 15 consecutive fights dating back to 2009, the 29-year-old power hitter finally makes his Las Vegas debut in what promises to be an action-packed 10-round battle.

U.S. Olympian Joseph Diaz Jr. (11-0, 7 KOs) has used his immense talents to impress the boxing world since the London Games. The 21-year-old from South El Monte, Calif. has shown maturity beyond his years along the way. Diaz is coming off of a shutout win over the 50-fight veteran Luis Maldonado in April. Diaz will stay busy in a 10-round featherweight bout against fellow prospect Ramiro “Zurdo” Robles (11-1-1, 6 KOs) who has compiled a seven-fight win streak heading into this bout. Like his opponent, the Guanajuato southpaw is 21 years old and hungry to make an impression in his United States debut.

Nineteen-year-old Mexicali phenom Diego De La Hoya (5-0, 3 KOs) is starting to garner the buzz once heard by his cousin, newly inducted Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya. Looking to stay active in 2014, “The Golden Kid” will be making his fourth appearance in the ring since February. Tonight, De La Hoya will look to keep his win streak alive when he faces Ciudad Obregon’s Miguel Tamayo (14-8-2, 12 KOs) in a six-round junior featherweight matchup. Coming off of a tough loss to top contender Gary Russell Jr., Tamayo hopes to get off to a fast start against De La Hoya and with 11 of his knockouts coming in four rounds or less, he has the tools to pull off the upset.

Victor Ortiz
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Victor Ortiz is need a of a new opponent for his December 14 comeback fight in San Antonio after Alfonso Gomez had to pull out with an injury.

FORMER WORLD CHAMPION STEVE FORBES STEPS IN TO FACE UNDEFEATED PHENOM JESSIE VARGAS ON MAY 5 “RING KINGS: MAYWEATHER VS. COTTO” PAY-PER-VIEW UNDERCARD

LOS ANGELES, April 26 – With Alfonso Gomez forced to withdraw from his scheduled May 5 bout against undefeated rising star Jessie Vargas on the “Ring Kings: Mayweather vs. Cotto” pay-per-view undercard due to a back injury, the call went out for someone willing to step up and face the unbeaten rising star on short notice. Former World Champion Steve “2 Pounds” Forbes answered the call without hesitation, ready to step into the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas to face Vargas in a 10-round welterweight bout.

“I am so excited to have been given the opportunity to fight on the May 5th fight card,” said Forbes. “It is an honor to be on the same card with such great champions. I am not going to overlook Jessie. We both have a lot riding on this fight and I look forward to showing him what I have in the ring.”

22-year old Las Vegas product Jessie Vargas (18-0, 9 KO’s) has long been on the media’s top prospects list thanks to wins over Arturo Morua, Walter Estrada and former World Champion Vivian Harris, but on the Mayweather vs. Ortiz undercard last September, he moved from prospect to contender with an exciting 10-round split decision victory over fellow young contender Josesito Lopez. Eager to keep the momentum going, Vargas scored a near-shutout win over Lanardo Tyner in February, and now he’s hoping to add Steve Forbes to his list of high-profile vanquished foes.

A veteran of over 15 years in the sport, Steve “2 Pounds” Forbes (35-10, 11 KO’s) has been in with the best of the business, including world champions Oscar de la Hoya, Cornelius Bundrage, Carlos Hernandez and Andre Berto. A former IBF junior lightweight world champion and star of the hit series “The Contender,” the 35-year old Forbes hopes that a win over the unbeaten Vargas will kick start an exciting run for him in the 147 pound weight division.

Gomez out of Vargas bout on Mayweather-Cotto PPV

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that Welterweight Alfonso Gomez was forced to withdraw from his May 5th bout with Jesse Vargas that was scheduled for the Floyd Mayweather- Miguel Cotto PPV undercard.

“Alfonso developed some serious back spasms (last week) and at first I thought he would just take a day off and rest. So we canceled sparring one day. But then we had to cancel a second day of sparring,” Saod Gomez manager Gary Gittelsohn. “And he never got much better.”

“But we gave Alfonso the weekend off to see if he’d feel any better,” Gittelsohn said. “The orthopedist said he didn’t think Alfonso was in any condition to do any running or strenuous activity. So that put him out of commission in critical moments of his training. So we canceled officially (Monday night) and I alerted Eric, who was disappointed as we all were. But these things happen. I’m so bummed.”

“I really felt like this was the perfect resurrection opportunity for Alfonso (coming off the loss to Alvarez) on the biggest showcase of the year,” Gittelsohn said. “We’re taking it day by day. I told Eric that I really want this fight for Alfonso and we hope it can be rescheduled down the line.”

“We were informed (Monday) night about this and we’re looking at some replacements,” Schaefer said. “I’m confident that Eric and Team Vargas will find a suitable replacement.”

“RING KINGS: MAYWEATHER VS. COTTO” TELEVISED PAY-PER-VIEW CARD SET

LOS ANGELES, April 9 -The “Ring Kings: Mayweather vs. Cotto” pay-per-view card is set and some of the toughest competitors in boxing today will be featured when undefeated rising star Jessie Vargas faces-off against perennial contender Alfonso Gomez and, in the opening pay-per-view bout, exciting 154 lb. contender DeAndre “The Bull” Latimore takes on former World Champion Carlos “El Indio” Quintana. The two 10-round bouts will take place prior to the WBA Super Welterweight Championship between Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto and the Canelo Alvarez vs. Sugar Shane Mosley WBC Super Welterweight title bout Saturday, May 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The event will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. Bet on this great fight

Twenty-two-year-old Las Vegas resident Jessie Vargas (18-0, 9 KO’s) is one of boxing’s fastest rising stars with notable wins over Arturo Morua, Walter Estrada and former World Champion Vivian Harris. Last September on the Mayweather vs. Ortiz card, Vargas proved that he is one of boxing’s top contenders with an exciting 10-round decision victory over fellow contender Josesito Lopez. Eager to keep his momentum going, Vargas scored a near-shutout win over Lanardo Tyner in February and is now hoping to add Alfonso Gomez to his collection of high-profile wins.

As a member of the cast in the hit boxing reality series “The Contender,” Alfonso Gomez (23-5-2, 12 KO’s) became the fighter to beat as he defeated the show’s top contenders, as well as other top-tier opponents such as Ben Tackie, Jesus Soto Karass and World Champions Arturo Gatti and Jose Luis Castillo. A two-time world title challenger who faced Miguel Cotto in 2008 and Canelo Alvarez in 2011, the 31-year-old from Guadalajara begins another quest for the title on May 5.

Twenty-six-year-old St. Louis-native DeAndre Latimore (23-3, 17 KO’s) now resides in Las Vegas and the change of scenery has done wonders for the aptly nicknamed “Bull.” As a former super welterweight title challenger who lost a highly controversial split decision to Cory Spinks in 2009, Latimore is looking to regain momentum and battle his way back into title contention. With three consecutive wins, including a memorable 10-round victory over Milton Nunez in February, he is closing in on another shot at 154-pound gold.

Moca, Puerto Rico’s Carlos Quintana (28-3, 22 KO’s) is a southpaw like the St. Louis native Latimore; however, “El Indio” is more matador than bull, with his excellent boxing skills, which led him to a world welterweight title win in 2008 over a then-unbeaten Paul Williams. With wins over top contenders including Joel Julio, Francisco Campos and Nurhan Suleymanoglu, the 35-year-old Quintana has won three of his last four bouts, most recently stopping Yoryi Estrella in nine rounds in February of 2011.

Latimore vs. Quintana is presented in association with DiBella Entertainment.

“Ring Kings: Mayweather vs. Cotto,” a 12-round fight for Cotto’s WBA Super Welterweight World Championship is promoted by Mayweather Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions and Miguel Cotto Promotions. Also featured will be Canelo Alvarez vs. Sugar Shane Mosley, a 12-round fight for Canelo’s WBC Super Welterweight World Championship which is presented in association with Canelo Promotions and Sugar Shane Mosley Promotions. The mega event is sponsored by Corona, Hatfields & McCoys on HISTORY™, DeWalt Tools, AT&T, O’Reilly Auto Parts and Puebla-Cinco De Mayo and will take place Saturday, May 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

Limited tickets for “Ring Kings: Mayweather vs. Cotto” are still available, with a total ticket limit of ten (10) per person. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000. Tickets also are available for purchase at www.mgmgrand.com or www.ticketmaster.com.

Three MGM Resorts International properties, Mandalay Bay, Monte Carlo and The Mirage, will host live closed circuit telecasts of “Ring Kings: Mayweather vs. Cotto.” Advanced purchased tickets for the closed circuit telecasts are priced at $75, not including handling fees. All seats are general admission and are on sale now at each individual property’s box office outlets or by phone with a major credit card at 866-799-7711.

HBO’s Emmy® Award-winning all-access series “24/7” premieres an all-new edition when “24/7 Mayweather/Cotto” debuts Saturday, April 14 at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT. The four-part series will air for three consecutive Saturday nights before the finale airs the night before the super welterweight championship showdown in Las Vegas.

Alvarez to defend against Gomez on Mayweather – Ortiz undercard

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that WBC Super Welterweight champion Saul Alvarez will defend his crown against Alfonso Gomez on September 17th in Los Angeles as part of a split site doubleheader that will be part of the Floyd Mayweather – Victor Ortiz televised undercard.

“It’s going to be an historic pay-per-view. It will be an amazing experience because the fans at Staples Center will be able to see the live feed from Las Vegas and also see Canelo Alvarez fight live that night, and the people in Las Vegas can see the live feed from the Canelo fight in the Staples Center,” Golden Boy promoter Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com.

“You’re going to have two HBO crews and they’ll give it back and forth between L.A. and Las Vegas. It’s going to be great,” said Schaefer, who is in Las Vegas promoting Saturday’s Amir Khan-Zab Judah junior welterweight title unification fight.

“To be able to see Mayweather-Ortiz and then add to that Erik Morales and Canelo Alvarez against Alfonso Gomez, and a young and emerging fighter who is tremendously talented in Jessie Vargas, it’s sort of like a little bit of everything on this pay-per-view,” Schaefer said.

“You can go to the fight at the Staples Center for as little as 50 bucks, which is the price of a closed circuit ticket (to see the pay-per-view view in Las Vegas). So you could see the pay-per-view on the big screen at Staples plus see Canelo Alvarez. That’s a pretty good deal, isn’t it?”

“For Gomez, he’s been waiting for an opportunity like this,” Schaefer said. “There was a time (in December 2010) when he was supposed to fight (Julio Cesar) Chavez Jr. but Chavez had to pull out. Now he gets to show what he’s all about against (another) big star from Mexico, Canelo Alvarez. I know Alfonso Gomez will come ready and will give Canelo a helluva fight. I told Canelo he better be ready because this guy is coming to win.”

Gomez takes out Green in Two!!

Alfonso Gomez showed no signs of rust as he stopped Calvin Green in round two in a scheduled ten round Welterweight bout at Casino Morango in Cobazon, California.

The fight had a swift pace from the outset as Gomez landed some nice hooks in round one where Green got through with a solid uppercut.

In round two, Gomez started working the body and landed a nice uppercut that was followed up by a nice right that wobbled Green into the corner. Green was visibly hurt and Gomez jumped on Green and a huge barrage ensued that had the referee stop the fight at 1:23 of round two.

Gomez, 148 1/2 lbs of Guadalajara, MX is now 23-4-2 with twelve knockouts. Green, 150 lbs of Baytown, TX is now 21-6-1.

Michael Franco scored an eight round unanimous decision over Rafael Lora in a eight round Jr. Lightweight bout.

Lora came out and did well in the first frame as he did well with the jab and right hand. Lora started to get it going in round two as he started to work the body. The fight started to heat up in round three as Franco started to show his arsenal but Lora was tough as he fought back. In round four, Lora spit out his mouthpiece and was deducted a point,

Franco started to break Lora down in round five as the early body work slowed Lora and there were instances where Franco became dominant. Franco had a big sixth as he landed numerous combinations and continued with the body work.

The eighth saw another point deducted from Lora for the same infraction of spitting out his mouthpiece.

Franco, 129 1/2 lbs of Riverside, CA won by scores of 77-73; 77-73 and 76-74 ro stay perfect at 19-0. Lora, 127 lbs of Irvington, NJ is now 11-6.

Jose Roman made quick work as he stopped Jose Mendoza in round one of a scheduled right round Lightweight bout.

Roman dropped Mendoza with a right hand midway through the opening frame. That punch also caused a cut over the left eye of Mendoza. Just a moment late, Roman dropped Mendoza again and he was counted out at 2:03 of round one.

Roman, 135 1/2 lbs of Santa Ana, CA is now 9-0 with eight knockouts. Mendoza, 135 lbs of Lama, Mexico is now 6-2.

Michael Farenas scored an eight round majority decision over former world title challenger Daniel Attah in a Super Featherweight bout.

Scores were 79-71; 78-72 and 75-75 for Farenas who is now 31-3-3. Attah is now 25-7-1.

Chavez Jr. to fight Alfonso Gomez on December 4 PPV in California

He wont be fighting Miguel Cotto, but popular Middleweight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will be in the ring on December 4 as he will take on former world title challenger Alfonso Gomez as part of a Top Rank Pay Per View card in Anaheim, Californina, that according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

• Former flyweight titlist Nonito Donaire (24-1, 16 KOs), a top-10 pound-for-pound fighter, will move up from junior bantamweight to face former bantamweight titlist Wladimir Sidorenko (22-2-2, 7 KOs) for a vacant interim belt.

• Lightweight titlist Humberto Soto (53-7-2, 32 KOs) will make his third defense against Urbano Antillon (28-1, 20 KOs) in a bout that had been slated to take place in May but was called off when Soto elected to take a different fight.

• Lightweight contender Brandon Rios (25-0-1, 18 KOs), coming off a breakout performance in which stormed past favored Anthony Peterson for a dominant seventh-round disqualification win on Sept. 11 in his HBO debut, will face an opponent to be determined.

“I think it’s a nice card. I like that card. It should be a fun show.” Said Top Rank boss Bob Arum , adding that the Honda Center will be configured for a crowd of about 10,000. “We have priced the tickets very reasonably — $200, $100, $50 and $30 — so we’re expecting a good crowd.”

“I’m excited to fight someone who has a good resume like Sidorenko, who’s been champion,” Donaire said. “I’m excited to fight somebody at this level rather than the guys I’ve been fighting. It’s good to be challenged and it makes me better. I’m facing a guy who knows how to win and is experienced. The challenge is there for me. Sidorenko is not a joke.”

Should Donaire prove victorious he would be in line to fight Fernando Montiel in early 2011

If Soto and Rios each win their bouts, Arum said he plans to match them in the first quarter of next year.

“That’s the idea, and maybe we could do Rios and Antillon, too, if Antillon wins,” Arum said. “We’ll try to make the fight for HBO or Showtime.”

“Rios is a lovely kid and now he’s a hard-working guy,” Arum said. “I think he’s going to go far and I’d love to give him a chance to fight for a world title on one of the premium networks.”

“Chavez is taking the fight seriously,” Arum said. “He’s going to spar with Manny and it’s perfect. Chavez is bigger than Manny, but Chavez is getting ready for a smaller guy [Gomez] and Manny is getting ready for a bigger guy [Antonio Margarito on Nov. 13]. Chavez being in the Philippines sparring with Manny will help sell both fights.”

One of the fighters who did not make the cut for the pay-per-view, junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan, will still get a televised opportunity. Arum said he plans to have Martirosyan fight in his hometown of Glendale, Calif., in the headline fight on a Fox Sports “Top Rank Live” card Dec. 18, possibly against Pawel Wolak — who had been in the running to face Chavez.

“We’ll save people from having to watch Bernard Hopkins’ fight that same night,” Arum cracked, taking a dig at Hopkins’ light heavyweight title challenge to Jean Pascal, which is scheduled the same day on Showtime PPV.
