Crawford makes history, takes down Canelo for third undisputed title

By Norm Frauenheim

LAS VEGAS – There was no blood. There were no knockdowns. There was only Terence Crawford.

Crawford’s dance, as brilliant as it was defiant, continued Saturday, reaching a peak few others have achieved or even imagined with an upset of Canelo Alvarez in front of a crowd of 70,482 at Allegiant Stadium.

Crawford, booed when he entered the arena and booed for weeks after the fight was announced, did what he was always done in his historic path to undisputed title in three weight classes.

He did it with his feet, frustrating Canelo at almost every turn in winning a unanimous decision. It was 115-113 on two scorecards and 116-112 on the third. Two of the cards appeared to be closer than what the dominant Crawford did in moving across the ring, in and out of harm’s way and into history.

Canelo always seemed to be a step behind, a dance partner that couldn’t quite keep up with the master.

If there was a surprise, it was in Crawford’s footwork. He moved his feet with an agility not seen in almost a decade. For 12 rounds, the 37-year-old Crawford sustained the dance that earned him the undisputed super-middleweight title and a place among boxing’s all-time greats.

If he had been around in another time, the game would have Five Kings alongside the foursome of Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns and Roberto Duran.

In his hometown – Omaha, they simply call him Bud. On this night, however, boxing historians could have called him Sugar. He was that good, a former welterweight and junior-welter champion coming up two weight classes to take down Canelo, one of the most feared punchers in his day,

After it was all over, Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) went to one knee and looked toward Allegiant Stadium’s ceiling as though he was looking to the heavens.

Thanks, he said

The thank-you was preceded by a confident Crawford who opened the fight in the southpaw style. His right hand led the attack and hinted at imminent alterations. But he never switched up, never went from left-handed to right-handed. But the threat was always there, forcing Canelo to be wary.

Above all, Crawford’s two-handed, ambidextrous threat  threw some hesitancy, if not outright  confusion into Canelo’s tactical plans.

Crawford right hand landed first, followed by a glancing left in the opening round. The crowd roared. Canelo remained cautious.

But in the second round, the popular Mexican hinted, perhaps, at what he had planned. He moved forward, almost stalking and in an almost straight line that led him to his target: Crawford’s midsection.

The body punch landed, forcing Crawford to step to one side and then another. In the third, it began to look as if Crawford was poised to pick up the pace.

In the fourth, he did, landing a couple of quick hands, first a right than a left. Momentum in the fourth, however, suddenly shifted when Canelo landed a straight right hand. Crawford looked at at him and smiled as if to say: You can’t catch me.

Over the next eight rounds, Canelo never could.

Callum Walsh dominates in one-sided decision over Vargas Jr.

Callum Walsh had too much power and too much accuracy.

In the end, he had too much of everything in overwhelming Fernando Vargas, Jr, who has a legendary name but none of his father’s resilient skillset.

On the scorecards, Vargas (17-1, 13 KOs) never had a chance. The judges nearly scored the 10-round junior-middleweight fight as a shutout for Walsh (16-0, 11 KOs), an agile Irishman who knows his way around the ring.

It was 99-91 on two cards and 100-90 on the third in the final fight before the Terence Crawford-Canelo Alvarez main event at Allegiant Stadium.

Mbilli, Martinez fight to a bruising draw

It was punishing, a fight full of momentum swings and exhausting exchanges of punches that landed everywhere and from all angles. It was hard to pick a winner.

In the end, nobody could..

Christian Mbilli-Lester Martinez was a draw. The good news is that the super-middleweight fight set the stage for a sequel and perhaps a great new rivalry. The only winner was the gathering crowd for the main event, Canelo Alvarez-versus-Terence Crawford. The early undercards didn’t offer much in terms of drama. Allegiant Arena eats were empty. Knockouts were few. Cheers were muted.

Then, Mbilli and Martinez stepped through the ropes.

In the early rounds, it looked as if Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs) might win easily. He appeared to have an edge in the number and power of inside punches. In the middle rounds, however, Martinez. (19-01, 16 KOs), showed a stubborn streak and and his own brand of body shots and uppercuts. The Guatemalan wasn’t going anywhere. In the eighth and again ninth, it looked as if the body assault had robbed Mbilli of his energy. He looked fatigued.

In the final moments of the tenth and final round, however, Mbilli recovered, scoring repeatedly and often enough to perhaps ensure a draw. One judge scored it for him, 96-94. One scored it for Martinez, 97-93. On the third, it was a draw, 95-95

Can’t wait for the rematchThe punishing fight ended with exchanges of punches and moment

Mohammed Alakel wins unanimous decision

Saudi junior-lightweight Mohammed Alakel (5-0, 1 KO) employed faster hands and feet, scoring quickly and repeatedly for a unanimous decision  overTravis Crawford (7-4) a hard working fighter from (7-4-1) from Corpus Christi, TX in the first fight on the Netflix part of a card featuring Terence Crawford-versus-Canelo Alvarez at Allegiant Stadium Saturday.

Brandon Adams wins rematch, scores decision over Bohachuk

Brandon Adams wore a gray wig to news conferences and weigh-ins. He shed the costume in the ring and answered questions about his age with a variety of punches.

Body shots, hooks and uppercuts were repeated answers to Serhii Bohachuk, who called the 36-year-old Adams — a Los Angeles middleweight — an old fighter.

Age is just a number, or at least it was for 10 rounds of punishing shots from multiple angles from Adams in a rematch victory Saturday at Allegiant Stadium over Bohachuk (26-3, 24 KOs) , a Ukrainian known for his power.

In the end, Adams made the 30-year Bohachuk look old.  Adams, who scored an eighth-round TKO of Bohachuk in 2021, landed shots almost at will, winning a unanimous decision in the final fight before the Netflix portion of the Canelo-Crawford card.

Jermaine Franklin wins dull decision

It was unanimous.

On the cards.

And in the seats.

Jermaine Franklin Jr. won the decision. He also shared some of the contempt hurled at Ivan Dychko from a few fans scattered across Allegiant Stadium’s 65,000 seats Saturday on the Canelo Alvarez-Terence Crawford card in a heavyweight matinee Saturday.

Franklin (24-2), of Saginaw MI,  and Dychko (15-, 14 KOs), a two-time Olympic bronze medalist from Kazakhstan, clinched and clutched more than they punched through 10 forgettable rounds. By the fifth, the scattered crowd began to jeer. By the eighth, the boos began to echo through the empty arena.

By the end of the 10th, there were cheers.

Finally, it was over.

Tsutsumi scores first-round stoppage

Reito Tsutsumi, a Japanese junior lightweight, didn’t need much time, mostly because Javier Martinez didn’t have much of anything at all.

Tsutsumi (3-0, 2 KOs) did it all within 2:18, walking down Martinez (7-3,4 KOs), hurting the Dallas fighter first with a succession of body shots and then finishing him with with straight punches that put Martinez on the canvas, a lonely figure in an empty building early on a card featuring Terence Crawford-versus-Canelo Alvarez fight.

Sultan Almohammed made a succsessful pro debut with a four-round unanimous decision over Martin Caraballo in a lightweight bout.

In round one, Almohammed dropped Caraballo with a right to the jaw.

Almohammed, 132.5 lbs of Jeddah, SA won by scores of 40-36 on all cardsa and is now 1-0. Caraballo, 133 lbs of Hollywood, FL is 0-1-1….Marc Abrams

Raiko Santana scored a mild upset by stopping Steven Nelson in the opening round of their 10-round light heavyweight bout.

Santana landed a hard right hand that hurt Nelson and a follow-up flurry forced the stoppage at 2:38.

Sanatana Of El Paso, TX is 13-4 with with seven knockouts. Nelson of Omaha, NEB is 20-2…...Marc Abrams

Potential Mexican star, Marco Verde stopped Sona Akale in round our of their six-roumd middleweight bout.

In round one, Verde landed a right hook that put Akale on the canvas.

In round four, Verde continued the assault and referee Mark Nelson stopped the bout at 1:11.

Verde, 158 lbs of Mazaltan, MEX is 3-0 with two knockouts. Akale, 158 lbs of St. Paul, MN is 9-4….Marc Abrams

Walsh Back on the Marquee in Santa Ynez

SANTA YNEZ, CALIFORNIA – Junior middleweight contender Callum Walsh looks to continue his ascent up the 154-pound rankings when he takes on veteran Elias Espadas on Saturday night in the ten-round main event of the UFC Fight Pass “Hollywood Fight Nights” event at the Chumash Casino Resort on Saturday night. Fighters for the seven-bout card weighed-in Friday morning before participating in the ceremonial weigh-in at the Sports Bar at Chumash at the host casino later in the afternoon.

Walsh (13-0, 11 KOs) of Ventura, California by way of Cork, Munster, Ireland will be making the fourth defense of the regional WBC Continental Americas light middleweight title he claimed in 2024 with a ninth-round knockout of Dauren Yeleussinov at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York. Walsh, the WBC #6/IBF #6 ranked contender, made his third appearance at the famed Garden last time out, scoring a devastating first-round knockout of Dean Sutherland this past March. Walsh weighed-in at the 154-pound junior middleweight limit.

Espadas (23-6-1, 16 KOs) of Merida, Yucatán, Mexico earned this opportunity with a hard-fought majority draw with unbeaten Sadriddin Akhmedov on a UFC Fight Pass-broadcasted event in Commerce, California just two months back. Notably, well-regarded 154-pound contender Xander Zayas stopped Espadas in five in 2022. The thirteen-year pro figures to gauge where Walsh stands amongst the other junior middleweight prospects and contenders. Espadas weighed-in at 153.8-pounds on Friday.

In the co-feature, undefeated Umar Dzambekov (11-0, 8 KOs) of Los Angeles, California by way of Grozny, Chechnya, Russia will take on former world title challenger Roamer Alexis Angulo (28-3, 23 KOs) of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic by way of Patia, Cauca, Colombia in an eight-round light heavyweight bout.

Dzambekov, who scaled 176-pounds, will be taking a step-up in class after knocking out his last two opponents inside the first round. Of the seven previous opponents Dzambekov has fought in scheduled eight-rounders, only two were able to last the distance. Angulo, who weighed-in at 174.6-pounds, goes rounds and will figure to provide a stern test for the up-and-coming Dzambekov. Only an over-the-contracted-weight David Benavidez was able to stop Angulo in 2020. Angulo fought Gilberto Ramirez to a twelve-round decision defeat in his first attempt at a world title in 2018 and also went the distance against Edgar Berlanga in 2022.

Cain Sandoval (15-0, 13 KOs) of Sacramento, California will take on short-notice replacement Yonathan Eniz (36-22-1, 17 KOs) of Dolores, Buenos Aires, Argentina in an eight-round junior welterweight fight. Sandoval, who was originally geared up to take on fellow unbeaten Jesus Madueno, weighed-in at 142.6-pounds on Friday. Eniz, who took the fight on just over a week’s notice, also came in at 142.6-pounds.

Roxy Verduzco (4-0, 1 KO) of Los Angeles will take a step-up against veteran Celene Roman (6-3-1) of Ontario, California by way of Zacatecas, Zacatecas, Mexico in an eight-round featherweight bout. Verduzco, a multiple-time national amateur champion, appears to be on the fast-track towards contention as she moves up to the eight-round distance in just her fifth pro bout. Roman ended a nearly ten-year sabbatical with a four-round majority decision over Amanda DeRosa in February. Verduzco scaled 125.8-pounds, while Roman came in at 124.4-pounds.

Opening up the UFC Fight Pass portion of the card, Daniel Barrera (8-1-1, 4 KOs) of Eastvale, California will meet Basilio Franco (10-3, 8 KOs) of Norwalk, California by way of Yahualica De Gonzalez Gallo, Jalisco, Mexico in an eight-round super flyweight bout. Barrera, who scaled 115, will be looking to rebound from his first career defeat to Christopher Rios in February. Franco, who scaled 113.6-pounds and will be making his United States debut, has won six straight entering the bout on Saturday.

The YouTube-broadcast portion of the card will be capped by once-beaten prospect Gor Yeritsyan (20-1, 16 KOs) of Los Angeles by way of Yerevan, Armenia who takes on Vernon Brown (13-2-1, 9 KOs) of Chicago, Illinois in an eight-round welterweight bout. Yeritsyan, a Wild Card Boxing Club stablemate of Walsh and Sandoval, weighed-in at 146.4-pounds. Brown, returning from a three-plus year layoff, came in at 146.2-pounds.

MMA veteran Jenelyn Olsim of Ventura by way of Baguio City, Benguet, Philippines will make her transition to the pro boxing game in the curtain raiser against Jessica Radtke Maltez (1-2-1) of Waconia, Minnesota in a four-round featherweight fight. Olsim, who has competed professionally in mixed martial arts since 2016, scaled 125-pounds, while Radtke Maltez, coming off of a six-round decision defeat to Roxy Verduzco in April, came in at 124-pounds.

Callum Walsh kicked off his 2025 campaign with a show-stopping first round knockout of Scotland’s Dean Sutherland (19-1) on St. Patrick’s Day Weekend in The Theater at Madison Square Garden. This was his third time headlining the famed venue in front a huge crowd of Irish boxing fans. The Freddie Roach trained southpaw fought in Ireland for the first time as a professional on September 20, 2024, stopping Poland’s Przemyslaw Runowski, (22-2-1), in the second round at the 3Arena in Dublin, thrilling the packed homecoming crowd.

Trained by Manny Robles, Elias Espadas battled over ten hotly contested rounds against undefeated Kazakh contender Sadriddin Akhmedov on April 19 at the Commerce Casino Events Center. The fierce clash was judged a draw with Espadas proving his mettle at the top of the junior middleweight division. Espadas has also battled undefeated young stars, Xander Zayas, Yamaguchi Falcao, D’Mitrius Ballard and Fiodor Czerkaszyn.

Additional fights for this action-packed event will be announced shortly.

The Hollywood Fight Nights event is part of a UFC Fight Pass Back-to-Back Weekend at the Chumash Casino Resort with Uriah Faber’s A-1 MMA hosting an event on Friday, June 20.

‘KING’ CALLUM WALSH STUNS NEW YORK CITY ST. PATRICK’S DAY CROWD WITH FIRST ROUND KNOCKOUT VICTORY

New York, NY (March 16, 2025) In front of a packed house of Irish boxing fans on Sunday night at The Theater at Madison Square GardenThe Fastest Rising Star in Boxing, ‘King’ Callum Walsh, (13-0, 11 KOs), of Cork, Ireland delivered on St Patrick’s Day weekend with a stunning first round knockout (2:45) of Scotland’s Dean Sutherland, (19-2, 7 KOs), broadcast globally on UFC Fight Pass. The stoppage is a sure-fire candidate for ‘Knockout of the Year.’

Walsh vs. Sutherland headlined The Biggest Irish Boxing Card in New York City History, promoted by Tom Loeffler’s 360 Promotions. Currently world ranked #6 by the World Boxing Council and International Boxing Federation, Walsh defended his WBC Continental Americas Super Welterweight Title for the third time and headlined at the famed venue for the third occasion. Among those in attendance at ringside was UFC President Dana White to watch the Freddie Roach charge.

Said the victorious Walsh, “I feel very good. He was a great opponent, I know at this weight every opponent is going to be tough and I keep getting stronger and better. I am destined to be one of the best fighters in the world. I could fight again tonight. I could fight next week. Where’s Dana White? Nobody beats the Irish, Especially on St. Paddy’s Day!”

“Callum Walsh is as advertised, no other young fighter in boxing is selling thousands of tickets in multiple locations (New York City, Dublin, Los Angeles, Boston) and impressing fans with these types of knockout performances,” said promoter Tom Loeffler. “We have big future plans for Callum and they definitely include fighting at Madison Square Garden on St. Patrick’s Day Weekend.”

Co-featured in the super lightweight division, former world title challenger Feargal McCrory, (17-1, 9 KOs), overcame a fourth-round knockdown to stop veteran Keenan Carbajal,

(25-5-1, 17 KOs), of Phoenix, AZ in the eighth stanza.

In an exciting back and forth battle, the southpaw McCrory dropped Carbajal in the seventh round from a flurry of punches. Following up in the eighth, Carbajal hit the canvas again as referee Arthur Mercante Jr. called a halt to the onslaught at the :23 mark.

Stated McCrory, “It’s St Paddy’s day, we all need a little drama in here. The knockdown occurred when he hit me with a good shot. My team did a great job from there on. In the gym they taught me how to deal with adversity. We had a great game plan for this fight that we worked on in the gym and tonight we executed it to perfection. Keenan, thanks for coming and thanks for putting on a great show. You’re a great fighter. I will keep working and keep winning and I can’t wait to get a world title shot.”

Fighting in a crowd-pleasing super welterweight rematch, Emmet Brennan, (6-0, 1 KOs), of Dublin, Ireland was once again too strong against Kevin Cronin, (8-3-1, 4 KOs), of County Kerry, Ireland. Scores over ten rounds were unanimous for Brennan on all three scorecards.

“8 rounds to 2” I called it before it was announced,” said Brennan. “The first fight wasn’t a robbery. He’s a warrior and he came to get it again. This fight was a lot easier than I thought it would be. It was our game plan. We were more prepared for this fight. The first one seems like we were not prepared at all.”

“Now I’m 6-0 it was my first ten rounder and now I’m looking for bigger fights and bigger opportunities. Hopefully Dana and TKO Boxing will see that I’m ready and they can make it happen. The first fight didn’t feel like a win with all the noise that went on afterwards. I’m glad I had the chance to prove myself.”

Opening the main card, heavyweight Thomas Carty, (9-1, 8 KOs), of Dublin, Ireland sustained a bad left leg injury in the second round against Dajuan Calloway, (12-3, 9 KOs), of Cleveland, OH. The bout was called to a stoppage after the second round as the ringside physician ruled Carty could not continue. Calloway was awarded a technical knockout victory.

Longtime local favorite, Cletus ‘The Hebrew Hammer’ Seldin, (29-1, 23 KOs) won an eight-round majority decision over game Yeis Gabriel Solano, (15-5, 10KOs), in the super lightweight division. Scores were 76-76, 77-75 and 78-74. “I have a lot of respect for my opponent, he was super durable. But I stuck to my game plan and deserved to win.” Seldin and his wife Jessica announced her pregnancy in the ring following the victory.

Pro debuters Sean O’Bradaigh of New York, NY and Jefferson Almeida of Campo Grande, Brazil fought to an entertaining four round majority draw. Scores were 39-37 (O’Bradaigh) and 38-38, twice.

Opening the show featherweight Donagh Kerry, (1-0), of Ireland, swept all four rounds in his professional debut against Geral Alicea-Romero, (0-2), of Naranjito, Puerto Rico. Scores were 40-36 on all three scorecards.

UNDEFEATED CHAMPION CALLUM WALSH RETURNS TO IRELAND TO DEFEND WBC CONTINENTAL AMERICAS TITLE AGAINST PRZEMYSLAW RUNOWSKI AT 3ARENA ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20

Dublin, Ireland: Callum Walsh makes his highly anticipated homecoming to Ireland on Friday, September 20 at Dublin’s 3Arena, presented by UFC FIGHT PASS®. The Cork native will defend his WBC Continental Americas Super Welterweight title in a main event bout against Przemyslaw Runowski. The co-main event will see Ali Akhmedov and Pierre Hubert Dibombe compete in a 10-round Super Middleweight bout.

Tickets go on sale from 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 21 via Ticketmaster. 3Arena presale tickets will be available to purchase from 10 a.m. on Monday, August 19. The ten-round main event will be broadcast globally on UFC FIGHT PASS®.

Callum Walsh has a long standing relationship with UFC President and CEO Dana White, who has  supported  Walsh’s career and provided  guidance after building a combat sports empire in UFC. As an undefeated rising star, White wanted to help make it possible for Walsh to fight at home in Ireland after basing himself in California for most of his career.

“I met Callum Walsh a couple of years ago and I love the way he fights. I also love the fact that he’s not fighting guys to pad his record, like the typical boxing model. This is a kid who really believes in himself and his potential to become a world champion,” said White. “I also love the fact that one of the greatest trainers in the history of the sport, Freddie Roach, believes in him. I am very invested in this fight in Dublin and I’m really excited to not only bring a fight back to Ireland but to be sitting ringside to see Callum fight in his home country at 11-0 with 9 knockouts taking on the #1 Super Welterweight from Poland with 25 pro fights and has never been stopped. This fight is a huge opportunity for both fighters with the WBC title on the line.”

Callum Walsh (11-0, fighting out of Cork, Ireland) will defend his WBC Continental Americas Super Welterweight for the second time at the 3Arena, following consecutive knockout wins over Dauren Yeleussinov and Carlos Ortiz. The fight marks Walsh’s first professional main event appearance on home soil and with 9 KOs in his career, this headline bout is sure to deliver fireworks.  Walsh is coached by Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach and is touted as one of the sport’s brightest talents.

Przemyslaw Runowski (22-2-1, fighting out of Slupsk, Poland) heads into the event unbeaten in his last five outings and having never been stopped. He is the top rated boxer in Poland in the super welterweight division and has his eyes on ruining Walsh’s homecoming and taking his belt.

Ali Akhmedov (21-1, fighting out of Almaty, Kazakhstan) returns to the ring for the third time in 2024, following back-to-back knockout victories in April and May. Completing the transition from prospect to contender, the bout is his opportunity to show the world why he is one of the most exciting fighters in the Super Middleweight division.

Pierre Hubert Dibombe (22-1-1, fighting out of Nates, Loire-Atlantique, France) has the opportunity to complete his mission of becoming world champion by 2026 when he meets Akhmedov in Dublin. The Frenchman is looking to bounce back strongly, having suffered his first professional loss by unanimous decision, bringing an end to a 23-unbeaten streak.

Additional bouts on the card include:

  • Thomas Carty (8-0, fighting out of Dublin, Ireland), who trained with double Oympian Kellie Harrington, takes on Jacek Chruslicki (8-0, fighting out of Nowy S?cz, Poland) in a Heavyweight bout.
  • Former Olympian Emmett Brennan (3-0, fighting out of Dublin, Ireland) faces Kevin Cronin (8-1-1, fighting out of County Kerry, Ireland) in an eight-round bout for the Super Middleweight Celtic Title.

‘KING’ CALLUM WALSH CONTINUED HIS RAPID ASCENT AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN

New York, NY (March 22, 2024) Fighting on St. Patrick’s Day Weekend, Friday March 15 in The Theater at Madison Square Garden, ‘King’ Callum Walsh continued to validate his status as The Fastest Rising Star in Boxing, with a ninth-round stoppage of Dauren Yeleussinov in front of huge crowd at the famed venue and a worldwide audience viewing on UFC Fight Pass.

With the victory guided by Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach, the 23-year-old native of Cork, Ireland improved his record to 10-0 with eight knockouts. Walsh also earned the WBC Continental Super Americas Welterweight Title with the dominant victory.

During a very busy fight week in addition to making the media rounds in New York City and hosting the Final Press Conference in Madison Square Garden’s Chase Square, Walsh spent the week meeting with a large group of local dignitaries at the Irish Consulate and held a packed media photo shoot at the Empire State Building. He also received a wealth of publicity from numerous international and local newspapers along with the top sports outlets prior to and following the fight.

The remarkable event was promoted by Tom Loeffler’s 360 Promotions. “It was a great St. Paddy’s Event last Friday March 15. Now with all the numbers that have been tallied, ‘King’ Callum Walsh has clearly established himself as The Fastest Rising Star in Boxing,” said Loeffler.

“Callum’s fight night was in the Top 20 of all boxing events held in the historic The Theater at Madison Square Garden, that’s a huge statement for only his second fight in New York City and the storied history of the venue. Callum’s event was also the highest rated boxing show in the history of UFC Fight Pass. That’s a pretty big statement for someone that’s 23-year-old with only ten fights. The future will only get brighter for young ‘King’ Callum!”

The exciting seven-bout card promoted by Tom Loeffler’s 360 Promotions had the loud and passionate crowd on their feet from the opening fight.

An electric anticipation filled the famed venue as Walsh made his ring walk from the top levels of the stairs. Following the United States and Ireland’s national anthem’s, Walsh and Villarreal got right to work, exchanging having handed combinations bringing roars from each of their loud fanbases.

The valiant Villarreal slowed down in the middle rounds from the punishing blows from the southpaw Walsh who used an array of skills honed under Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach at the renowned Wild Card Boxing Gym in Los Angeles.

Villarreal scored a knockdown of Walsh late in the tenth round, the first of his career, however the round ended without any further damage.

Scores for Walsh at the end of the battle were 97-92, 97-92 and 96-93.

Said the victorious Walsh, “I appreciate everyone showing up tonight. This is his hometown and he really came to fight, he’s a tough fighter. It took a little for me to get warmed up but this was a real fight against a real fighter, I’m not here to take easy fights. You’re bound to get hit at this level but I proved that I can fight and win tonight. I’m 22-year-old and this fight will only make me better. We clashed heads and he hit me low but it’s a fight so you keep on going throwing your best shots.”

“I wasn’t hurt from the knockdown, more of a push and a trip that put me down. You could see when I got up I was fine. It happens, I have a good chin. I thought I won every round but one or two.”

“I wanted to get the knockout but I’m happy with my overall performance. I got hit too much which is something to work on. I’m going to learn and come back better. I was very happy with the crowd, there was a lot of loud support for both of us.”

Stated promoter Tom Loeffler, “Ismael Villarreal was a very tough opponent for Callum which we knew going into the fight. But this victory and the response from the sold-out crowd truly catapults Callum into the next level of popularity.”

Sacramento, CA knockout artist Cain Sandoval, (11-0, 11 KOs), continued his terror through the junior welterweight division, dominating and stopping Wesley Ferrer, (17-2-1, 8KOs), of Brooklyn, NY. “Dana White only gets behind real fighters and that’s what I’m here to prove, that I’m a real fighter. I never turn down an opponent or a fight. I fight whoever they put in front of me and try to prove myself.”

“I know Villarreal’s not going to want to lose here in his hometown. He’s young and he’s hungry for victory, he’s had one loss and that was controversial. But I’m ready to show New York that I’m here to stay. This has been my best camp, I feel very strong and very fit.”

“My training camp with Freddie at Wild Card Boxing Gym is going very well, I’m confident I’ll be victorious. New York has a big Armenian community and I look forward to putting on a memorable show for them and the fans watching on UFC Fight Pass.”

“Calling the Garden ‘special’ is the biggest understatement in sports,” said Freddie Roach. “The names who have fought there, headlined there, could fill up several halls of fame.  Legends like Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Oscar de la Hoya, Hector Camacho, Roy Jones, Miguel Cotto, and Katie Taylor.  The Garden reeks with history.  I never fought there but I always wanted to because I wanted to follow in the footsteps of giants.  Believe me, the significance of fighting at The Garden is not lost on Gor and he will make a very good first impression with New York boxing fans.”

Making his third start of 2023 on November 9, Gor Yeritsyan has scored two crushing, second round knockouts this year. On June 9, 2023, he stopped world title challenger Gustavo David Vittori, following up with a knockout victory over Rogelio Jun Dolinguez on August 26, 2023. Both show-stopping knockouts took place in front of his legion of fans at the Commerce Casino.

Luis Alberto Veron returns to New York City following a hotly contested clash against fast rising contender Brian Ceballo on April 27, 2023. Veron has also faced a wealth of world class competition over his eight years as a professional including Alexis Rocha, Elvis Rodriguez, Taras Shelestyuk, and Michael McKinson.

Additional fights already announced for the huge November 9 event include an eight-round light heavyweight battle between Undefeated Powerhouse Umar Dzambekov, (7-0, 5 KOs), of Los Angeles, CA and Brooklyn, NY based, Hard-Hitting Frederic ‘The French Revolution’ Julan, (13-2, 10 KOs).

IRELAND’S ‘KING’ CALLUM WALSH MAKES HIS MADISON SQUARE GARDEN DEBUT IN TITLE DEFENSE VS. BRONX BEAST ISMAEL VILLARREAL ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9!

New York City, NY (September 25, 2023) The Fastest Rising Star in Boxing, ‘King’ Callum Walsh will make his New York debut on one of boxing’s biggest stages, The Theater at Madison Square Garden.  The ten-round main event on Thursday, November 9 will be broadcast globally on UFC FIGHT PASS, which is also making its Garden debut for boxing.  Ranked No. 16 by the World Boxing Council (WBC), the native of Cork, Ireland returns to battle following a fourth-round stoppage of veteran Juan Jose Velasco in Los Angeles, CA.

Presented by Tom Loeffler’s 360 Promotions, the highly touted 22-year-old Walsh, (8-0, 7 KOs), will make the second defense of his WBC US Silver Super Welterweight Title, against Ismael Villarreal (13-1, 9 KOs), from Bronx, NY.  On Sept. 20, Villarreal defeated John Martinez (19-3, 16 KOs), via a TKO 2, ending the Miami fighter’s four-year, eight-fight winning streak.  Villarreal scored three knockdowns in round two, forcing the referee to end the fight with two seconds remaining in the round. The combined record of Villarreal’s last six opponents when he fought them was 93-19 – a winning percentage of 83%.

Tickets to the Walsh-Villarreal super welterweight title event at The Garden are on sale now.  Tickets priced at $205, $155, $55, and $35are available now and can be purchased online at ww.msg.com or at the Madison Square Garden box office and via Ticketmaster locations.  Accessible and companion seats are available via the Accessibility Department at 888.609.7599.

“Every fighter aspires to fight at Madison Square Garden,” said the Freddie Roach-trained southpaw.  “It’s a big combat sports week and a dream come true to fight at ‘The Mecca of Boxing’ in New York City ahead of UFC 295.  I can’t wait to put on a great show for the fans and my Irish compatriots.”

“For Callum to be making his Garden debut is a testament to his hard work and talent,” said Walsh’s Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach. “But to be the headliner, in just his ninth pro fight, and during this special week, that is a ringing endorsement from The Garden executives.  Villarreal is another big test for Callum.  Callum wouldn’t have it any other way.”

“My dream is to be a world boxing champion and to achieve it I have to eliminate all the obstacles that come my way and Callum Walsh will be no exception,” said Villarreal.  “I will be happy to do it in New York in front of my fans, in the city where I was born and have lived all my life.  I know that this victory will open the doors for me to compete in a world championship no later than 2024. On November 9, the boxing world will know who Ismael “Maelo” Villarreal is.”

“I couldn’t be happier for Ismael Villarreal in getting this opportunity to headline at the Garden, it’s every fighter’s dream growing up in New York,” said Kathy Duva, Villarreal’s Hall of Fame promoter.  “He has worked incredibly hard to get to this point, accepted every fight that has been offered to him, and now has a chance to prove that he is a legitimate player at 154 lb. I want to thank 360 Promotions and UFC Fight Pass for this opportunity, and I have no doubt that this will be a very entertaining fight.”

Tom Loeffler has promoted numerous sold-out events at Madison Square Garden including memorable evenings headlined by middleweight icon Gennadiy ‘GGG’ Golovkin and heavyweight champions Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko.

“Fighting at Madison Square Garden is a huge step for every future superstar in boxing,” said Tom Loeffler. “Callum draws sold-out, celebrity-filled crowds to his events in Los Angeles and we’re expecting another tremendous evening for his New York debut at The Garden.

“Dana White and his team at the UFC continue to be tremendous partners for the growth of Callum and we’re very excited to be part of their tremendous week at Madison Square Garden.”
