LAS VEGAS – A fight in need of a buzz suddenly got some.

Daniel Jacobs literally shoved some buzz into the proceedings at a formal weigh-in Friday for the middleweight-title bout Saturday against favored Canelo Alvarez at T-Mobile Arena.

There’s debate about whether it was spontaneous or planned. There’s also a fair argument about what to call it. On the combat scale, it ranks somewhere between a fracas and a dust-up. A brawl, it was not, although it could have turned into one if the opposing corners had not intervened.

Whatever it was, it woke up a weigh-in crowd of a few thousand fans, who had not heard any trash talk from either camp until the fighters made weight, stepped off the scale and stood in front of each other for the ritual face-to-face showdown.

Jacobs leaned forward. Canelo leaned forward. They were forehead-to-forehead when Jacobs shoved Alvarez. Emotion woke up a napping crowd. Yawns became cheers, then jeers. Canelo angrily pointed at Jacobs. Then, he held up his hands, looking as if he wanted to throw a few bare-knuckled blows more the 24 hours before opening bell. Boxing is nothing if not tribal. Finally, the opposing tribes had something to talk about it. Something to anticipate.

No wonder, Jacobs promoter Eddie Hearn can be seen smiling in the background of all those photos that were immediately posted. It was just the kind of thing that might lead to some new subscriptions to DAZN, the streaming service that will carry the fight (6 p.m. PT/ 9 p.m. ET).

But pushing and threatening gestures were just part of the scene. Angry obscenities followed. There was talk about mothers from each fighter. Let’s just say that neither Jacobs nor Canelo wished the other guy’s mom a Happy Mother’s Day.

“I won’t back down,’’ said Jacobs (35-2, 29 KOs), who was at 160 pounds.

“He’s scared,’’ said Canelo (51-1-2, 35 KOs), who was a half-pound lighter at 159.5

Both said a lot more, of course. And each word was a sure sign that pretense had finally left the building. Violence awaits.

The lingering question is how, or even if, the stormy exchange will affect the outcome. One big punch from either fighter could make the flare-up oh-so forgettable. But there a theory that Jacobs initiated it in an attempt to rattle Canelo. That’s hard to do. If anything, Canelo is unflappable. On the safe side and the dangerous side of the ropes, he is all business. Emotion is there. It was in a brief exchange with Gennady Golovkin at their weigh-in last September. Canelo won that one by a decision narrow enough to be controversial.

After the victory, there is video of Canelo gesturing toward the sound of scattered boos from the crowd. He places a forefinger across his lips. Silence, he says. The victory and the gesture were another reminder that he is fighter always under control. Jacob’s shove looked a little bit like a psychological play, an attempt perhaps to upset Canelo’s trademark poise. Lose control is a sure way of losing the fight.

One thing is certain: the fight began Friday at the weigh-in. For Canelo. For Jacobs. And for fans.

LAS VEGAS – Canelo Alvarez likes to talk about history. But don’t look for the kind forever carved in ancient marble. Canelo’s history is evolving, or at least he hopes it is.

“I’m ready, ready to continue writing history’’ Canelo said this week at a news conference memorable for everything that didn’t happen.

At one level, there was nothing special about the comment. In news conference-speak, it was boilerplate. Yet, it also was a reflection of Canelo, perhaps as pragmatic and patient a fighter as there ever has been.

His steady emergence from a kid better known for hair color than punches to the biggest earner in the game has unfolded, almost like pages in a business plan. To be sure, there has been the unexpected. This is boxing, after all. No fighter goes through a career at the sport’s highest level without stepping on some land mines.

For Canelo, there was a suspension for PEDs. There was discontent among Mexico’s loyal fans for his performance in a one-sided loss to Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

Yet, Canelo has moved through it all, moving forward with steady, almost uninterrupted purpose. The plan has held together. If there is a process to stardom, Canelo has found it. And furthered it. It looks simple. But nothing about landing a punch, much less taking one, is ever easy. By instinct or through experience, Canelo (51-2, 35 KOs) seems to understand that standing still – in the ring and outside of it – always ends up the same way. You get knocked out. Canelo’s career has been a lot like a lesson plan. So far, he’s been an A-student. A few mistakes, but no outright failures.

Now, however, a key test awaits in Daniel Jacobs (35-2, 29 KOs) at T-Mobile Arena Saturday night for the middleweight title and at least $30-million, Canelo’s expected purse for the second fight in his landmark deal with DAZN (6 pm PT/9 pm ET).

Jacobs’ skillset is the very collection of foot speed and movement that has always given Canelo fits. For the sake of argument, throw out the one-sided loss to Mayweather. He gave everybody fits.

For Canelo, the real questions were left by Austin Trout in 2013 and Erislandy Lara in 2014. Canelo won both fights, yet he didn’t look good in either. There is still a lingering argument, often voiced by Lara, that Canelo got a gift on the scorecards.

It is safe to say that Jacobs has probably studied – and re-studied — both the Trout and Lara fights. In a conference call, Jacobs referred to Canelo’s “uneducated feet.’’ He also said that Canelo has trouble against “moving targets.”

Translation: Jacobs thinks Canelo can be beat by quick fighters who know where to place their feet and how to move them. It’s a dance as timeless as it is critical. By now, however, it is also clear that Canelo learns, from fight to fight to fight. Remember, it’s all part of the process.

He’s not the fighter he was in 2013 against Trout and in 2014 against Lara. Canelo has evolved. He continues to evolve. It’s his way of writing history. Against Jacobs, he has a chance to make some more.

“I trained really hard for this fight. I was training hard before I knew I was fighting Mauricio Herrera. I was sparring 10 rounders in February. I’m more than ready for this fight. Mauricio has never been stopped. I’ve stopped everybody. I’m more than ready to go into this fight. I’m prepared. Mauricio has been in there with Danny Garcia and Jose Benavidez, who I do believe he beat, and in my eyes he is a world champion. We all know who won. But those guys weren’t me. He didn’t fight me, he didn’t fight Vergil Ortiz. We’re going to see how the fight plays out May 4th.

“About my dad. I really wouldn’t be here without him. He didn’t have the best childhood growing up and he made sure he did everything in his power that I did. I don’t think his dad was there for him when he grew up but he made sure he was there for me. My mom wasn’t there. He played both parts. That’s something you don’t see all the time. Usually it’s the mom who stays with the kid. My dad is the one who stayed with me, was there for me. Thank you dad, I love you.”

“On a more serious note, I can’t wait to eat tacos after this fight. I’m hungry. Other than that, hopefully after this fight, I get a world title shot soon. There’s a couple fights out there. Like, Maurice Hooker, we’re both with DAZN. So, Eddie, make the fight with Maurice Hooker happen please? We’re both from Dallas, we’re both on DAZN, I grew up watching Maurice Hooker on Golden Gloves, he knows me as well. In a couple years, I’ll take on Errol Spence too. I don’t mean that like I’m going to go through everybody. I just believe in my ability.”

Shouting out to Miguel Cotto in the crowd: “I want to thank Cotto. He was one of my favorite fighters growing up, my dad based my style off of Cotto. I don’t know if he knew that.”

Mauricio Herrera, Former Interim WBA Super Featherweight Champion:

“This fight is really motivating. As many of you know my career has gone through ups and downs. In 2014 when I had fought Danny and felt I’d been robbed and then had the chance to win a WBA interim title which I won, and then later that same year, I got robbed again. That really left me in a bad place. I didn’t care for boxing and I was unmotivated. A lot of the fights you see where they’re close and I look bad in, it’s because I’m unmotivated in those fights. I’m slowly getting my motivation back.”

“This kid Ortiz has 12 wins and 12 knockouts, undefeated. On Saturday I’m really motivated. I do want to bring my career back. I trained really hard. You’re going to see I’m not an old lion. And if I’m an old lion, I’m a hungry lion. Come Saturday, you’re going to see a great show. Don’t tune me out. Saturday, you’ll see the Maestro comeback.”

“I’m going to go out there and showcase that I’m the next superstar in boxing. Freddy, I appreciate you coming down from Nicaragua but come Saturday night you ain’t gonna get that victory bro. You’re going to go home sad with a couple black eyes. I’m very, very focused. I’ve been training my ass off. 2018, I dealt with a lot of adversity. My dream is to become a world champion, and 2018 really hurt my heart. I was really at rock bottom. Just being focused and having good family supporting me through the rough times, it really meant a lot to me, it made me more motivated, it made me more into a savage and into a beast. I thought I won the GGG fight and I assure you I will win this fight without controversy.”

What his loss against GGG taught him: “Well, numerous things. First, you have to go in there and win a fight decisively. I don’t want no controversy. I want to be victorious, and I want all the fans to know I’m the best middleweight in the world.”

“Styles make fights. If you’re any boxing person, you know that, you know that every fight is not going to be the same. You have to approach every fight differently. If I don’t apply my best, I don’t deserve to be there. But I look forward to being victorious.”

“I’ve always envisioned getting my hand raised, I’ve always been vocal about getting the knockout, about the knockout being possible. I have an 80% knockout ratio, so if I get a guy hurt, you know I can get him out of there.”

Having never gone past 5 rounds, what does Garcia tell him in case he does this time?”He tells me it’ll actually benefit me even more. Pretty soon, I’m going to go for a world title and I’m going to need as much experience as I can to win that world title.”

“In sparring, I was already going 10 rounds in February. That was two months ago. I can definitely go two more rounds if I wanted to. I’m definitely one of the hardest workers in boxing, and May 4, it’s going to show. I’m not going to get tired. I’m going to show that I can go even more rounds.”

Being 140 now and going up to 147 by 2020: “It’s a big difference, but I think it’s a big difference that I can easily own up to. I’m already a big 140, so I think I’ll be a pretty good sized 147.”

Being made the new co-main event: “It’s all the same, I’m ready to go. Last fight, first fight, I’m ready to put on a great show Saturday. It changes nothing.”

“I think the main thing is I bring a different style. I don’t have a rhythm they can follow. No matter how they train, who they train with, they’re not going to fight nobody like me. That’s what throws them off. That’s the main plan Saturday night, be myself.”

On Ortiz Jr.’s 12-0, 12 KOs record: “It doesn’t mean nothing, it doesn’t mean anything to me. I don’t care what he does. It’s what I’m going to do. I don’t care about his record. I just want to go out there and give it my best and give a good fight to the crowd and come out with a win.”

“I think my experience is going to show a lot. I know Fonseca, he’s a very dangerous opponent, it’s his first time fighting in the U.S., he’s going to give his all, but I’m destined for greatness, destined to become the champion I’m meant to be before the end of the year.”

“130 is the ideal weight. 126 was very, very hard for me to make the weight. I felt a lot weaker, my body was depleted. I’m much stronger now, more lucid. I’m able to showcase my skill and my talent and it’s all going to show. I’m going for the knockout.”

“We were training for anybody, we were training for the champion Tevin Farmer, Rene Alvarado, we finally got Fonseca. He’s a leftie, a dangerous left. But we trained very hard, focused on power and speed. I’m 120% ready and I’m anxious to get inside that ring.”

Getting Freddy instead of his brother Francisco: “I was shocked. I was getting ready for Francisco Fonseca. Gervonta Davis, Tevin Farmer all fought him. It was going to showcase to everybody that I belong with them. I was getting ready for him and I really wanted the fight, but turns out I’m fighting his brother. He’s a dangerous fighter too, good KO record. He’s still going to be dangerous and a very tough opponent. He’s a leftie as well, so we had to make some adjustments, but like I said, I’m ready for anything. Whatever he brings to the table, I’m ready for it.”

“It’s not going to go past 6 rounds, that’s for sure.”

Atlantic City, NJ (April 29, 2019) – This Saturday night at The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, welterweight, Anthony “Juice” Young will finally get the chance on the world stage to prove he is among the top fighters in the division when he takes on Sadam Ali (27-2, 14 KO’s) on the undercard of the Canelo Alvarez – Daniel Jacobs middleweight unification card live on DAZN.

Young of Atlantic City has been a professional for eight-years as he has compiled a respectable mark of 20-2 with seven knockouts, but Saturday will be his first fight on the world stage and outside of the East Coast when he takes on the the 2008 Olympian and former super welterweight champion.

“Training camp has been good. I just fought om March 23rd ( A 6th round stoppage over Juan Rodriguez Jr), so I just took a couple days off and went right back in the gym. I have had a solid six-week camp for this fight,” said Young.

Young feels that he has been overlooked as this is the 1st major opponent that he has faced in his career.

“All that I have ever wanted was an opportunity. This was presented to us, and we jumped on it. I have fought the bulk of my career at home in Atlantic City. I feel there is more pressure in that. I won’t feel any pressure on Saturday. I just know that after Saturday, the whole boxing world will know who I am.”

A win over the well-known Ali is just what Young has been clamoring for, and the 31 year-old popular Jersey Shore based fighter has had his eye on Ali for a long time.

“I have been following Ali for a long time. My goal was to make the Olympic team, and he got on the team in 2008. He’s a great fighter. He is an Olympian, who defeated a legend in Miguel Cotto to become a world champion. I think he was over-matched in terms of size when they put him in with Munguia. He is a world class fighter, but so am I. Saturday, the world will see that. A win will put me on the world stage, and will show that I am a player in the welterweight division. I want to fight everybody. I just want to thank everyone on my team, and I am dedicating this fight to Leavander Johnson and his father Bill. Leavander was the last Atlantic City fighter to get to this stage and Saturday, I will do everyone proud.”

“I don’t necessarily think Canelo can bully me. I think that it’s going to be really hard for him being the smaller guy to dictate that. I’m a rough guy when it comes to being in the ring. From the outside looking in, it might look different. But in the ring, I’m a physically big guy with speed and power, so it’s more about the tactics that I choose to use to be victorious.”

“All I see is my hand being raised. I’ve envisioned KOs, decisions, all the positive things. As far as controversy or negativity, him being able to take my punches or push me back, that’s not entered my mind. We only think positively before going into the ring, we’re ready for every possibility, but ultimately, we are on a positive path to victory.”

“Victory would truly show the fans that whether you think I beat Golovkin or not. I am the best Middleweight in the world. I’ve always said that I am the best, and I’ve also always been vocal that the win over Golovkin was taken from me. So, a win over Canelo puts a new idea in the fans’ minds that this guy is the best as he’s proven it against a guy that bean Golovkin – and then I can give Golovkin the rematch and prove that I am better than him.”

“I’ve switched up the sparring partners a lot and we’ve worked a lot on footwork. I’ve been the come-forward aggressor in my previous fights, the power-puncher; Canelo takes a good shot and he’s very elusive with his upper body, so we wanted to make sure we’re faster on our feet, with our hands and with our combinations than in previous fights.”

“I give Canelo all the respect in the world. He’s definitely top-ten, pound for pound. There are some controversial fights that he’s had that where I thought he lost, including both Golovkin fights. But I respect any man that has the courage to fight as this is a kill or be killed sport, but that’s where the respect ends. As far as getting in the ring with him goes, I want to be the victor. I want to take his head off and prove that I am the best gladiator in the world. That’s my true intentions so there’s no respect when it comes to that. But we’re both gentlemen and in my opinion, we’re great ambassadors for the sport. But take that away, and it’s going to be a blood sport in the ring.”

“It’s a little annoying to have to keep talking about the judges and Canelo getting favoritism, but it’s also a fact in most people’s mind so that’s why it comes up so much. I don’t mind answering the questions, but it can be annoying as I don’t want the mindset to be going in there to fight Canelo and the judges. I don’t need any more stress in this fight as Canelo is a force in himself and it’s going to take a lot to figure him out.”

“I study all the fights, and the ones I believed he lost as those are the fighters that showed his bad habits and the opponents were able to exploit them. Canelo has great upper body and head movement, but his legs and his knees don’t hold up well. He doesn’t cut the ring off well like Sergey Derevyanchenko or Golovkin. We look at things like that. I’m one of the longest fighters that he’s faced too, and I’m so fast, so I think I can use all that to my advantage.”

“Sometimes in boxing you have to prove yourself. If you don’t have the name, the power and the brand to really be marketed to the world, you have to work harder to get recognition. I think that with the win over Canelo, I would be given everything I rightfully deserve. The pound-for-pound list doesn’t worry me as that’s for the fans. They can pick and choose who they see fit and who they like. That’s a favoritism thing anyway, so if I’m not the fans favorite after this fight, I’ve got a lot more work to do. I need to not worry about that but concentrate on winning the fight in the ring and the rest will come.”

“Controversy sells but that’s not who I am. That’s not where I came from. I’m not sure if that’s why I am not a household name, but I can’t concentrate on that. I stay true to who I am and how I was raised. I’ll always keep that integrity and try to be a stand-up guy. Also, by having a son, I know he watches everything that I do, and I can’t be acting up and being goofy to get more ratings. Boxing is my job, I have to stay professional and disciplined to get the job done.”

“I never look past any fighter, but it’s absurd that Golovkin and his team would always say that people are fearful of facing them and that they were in it for the love of the sport and to fight the best. Me getting the win over Canelo, you would think that they would want the rematch, but we heard it out of their own mouths that they still wouldn’t want the rematch if I win. They would rather fight Canelo. So, we see from that that boxing is a business. It’s a compliment for sure that he thinks that way. Golovkin knows he lost the fight against me. I saw it in his eyes when they gave me the decision, and he’s never been vocal about giving me the rematch. It’s either been small talk or just swept under the rug. So, for me, I just want to make sure that I not only fight Golovkin again and prove the naysayers wrong, but show him that he knows that I am better than he is.”

“I love energy. Regardless of the fans rooting for Canelo or booing me, I take it and use it as fuel. I want people to chant, roar, raise the roof, it doesn’t matter if it’s for me or against me, I just want that energy in the arena to feed off, and that’s what I am expecting on May 4.”

“I haven’t done anything majorly different than in any other training camp. We’ve had a lot of guys who spar similar to Canelo’s style, and I’ve kept my camp here in New York. We have everything we need here at Competitive Edge Athletics. I’ve been here for six years and this is the biggest fight I’ve ever had. I wanted to be at home and feel that energy from where it all started. I wanted feel the vibes and then go to Las Vegas for the victory.”

“We leave tomorrow, so I’m going to go to Brownsville before I go to get some love to take with me that I was raised from and go out and conquer the world. It’s Brooklyn versus everyone where I’m from. This is the opportunity and my one shot to achieve my dreams. Plant City, FL (April 15, 2019) – WBC Latino middleweight champion Yamaguchi Falcao will defend his belt against Chris Pearson Thursday, May 2 at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV.

The two met in 2011 as part of the international amateur boxing event World Series of Boxing with Pearson winning a highly controversial split decision.

Fighting out of Plant City, FL by way of Sao Mateus, Brazil, Falcao captured a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics and is ranked #9 in the world by the World Boxing Council. As a pro, the skilled southpaw’s compiled a 16-0 record with 7 wins by knockout. Falcao was slated to fight Paul Mendez March 9 in New York but the bout was cancelled at the last minute due to issues with Mendez’ medicals.

During the last year and a half, Falcao’s repeatedly expressed his willingness to face any of the world’s best 160 pound fighters but must first get past a quality opponent.

Living and fighting out of Trotwood, OH, the hard-hitting Pearson has an excellent professional ledger of 16-2 (12 KO’s). The 28-year-old is no stranger to fighting on big platforms, most notably appearing on the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao PPV where he defeated Said El Harrak. After a setback against highly rated Justin DeLoach, he’s won his last two bouts by knockout and looks to make it three straight against Falcao.

Jacobs, 32, feels he has the mental advantage after having overcome a tough battle with cancer. The native of Brooklyn, New York also noted that he has a strategic advantage over Canelo because he has studied him for his entire career and because of his unique blend of abilities.

Canelo, 28, a native of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, became the top man in the sport by giving fans the biggest and most entertaining fights. At 154 pounds, Canelo captured several world titles and defeated the likes of Austin “No Doubt” Trout, Sugar Shane Mosley, Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo, Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara and Liam “Beefy” Smith. Canelo, however, scored his most significant victory at 160 pounds when he defeated Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in their highly anticipated rematch in September 2018 and established himself as the WBC, WBA, Lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight World Champion.

Jacobs, 31, is a native of Brooklyn, New York and is widely considered one of the best middleweights of this era. Jacobs rose up the middleweight rankings to win the WBA Middleweight World Title against Jarrod Fletcher in 2014 after being away from the sport for 19 months due to a form of bone cancer that he courageously overcame. Jacobs made several successful defenses including a thunderous first-round knockout of Peter Quillin the following year. Although he lost to Gennady Golovkin in a very close fight in 2017, Jacobs returned stronger than ever, defeating former amateur champion and middleweight contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko to capture the IBF Middleweight World Championship. LAS VEGAS (April 10, 2019): David Lemieux (40-4, 34 KOs) will make his 168-pound debut when he takes on John “The Gorilla” Ryder (27-4, 15 KOs) in the scheduled 12-round co-main event of Canelo vs. Jacobs. The card will also feature the returns of Vergil Ortiz Jr., Pablo Cesar “El Demoledor” Cano, Joseph “JoJo” Diaz Jr., Sadam “World Kid” Ali and Lamont Roach Jr., in separate bouts. The event will take place Saturday, May 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN.

“There comes a time when every fighter must move up in weight, and now is that time for David Lemieux,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy. “Lemieux was the hardest-hitting puncher in the 160-pound division, and I’m absolutely certain he will be the biggest puncher at 168 pounds. Lemieux, 30, was last seen on the televised pay-per-view undercard of Canelo vs. GGG 2 when he scored a first-round knockout victory against Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan. The native of Montreal, Canada promises to be stronger than ever in his super middleweight debut.

“I’ve seen [John] Ryder fight,” said David Lemieux. “He’s a credible rival, but I’m going to make a statement out of what I’m going to do with him. At 168, I’m going to be the strongest that I’ve ever been.”

Ryder is a 30-year-old native of London who is the No. 1 contender for the WBA Super Middleweight Title. Ryder has faced tough opposition, including a close fight against Rocky Fielding and a tough battle against Billy Joe Saunders. The “Gorilla” is coming off a seventh-round technical knockout win against previously undefeated Andrey Sirotkin, and he’ll look to retain his shot at the title with a win against Lemieux.

“I’m fully focused on the fight with David Lemieux, but obviously there’s a massive pot of gold for the winner,” said John Ryder. “There’s the potential for a fight with Canelo or a fight with Callum Smith, which are both huge. Lemieux is a big puncher if you stand in front of him. I’m a boxer-fighter. I’ll box him at times and fight him at other times when it suits me. Our fighting styles are sure to gel for a great fight. I’m expecting to win and to win well. I’m there to keep my mandatory position.”

Vergil Ortiz Jr. (12-0, 12 KOs) will face the biggest test of his career when he takes on Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera (24-8, 7 KOs) in a 10-round welterweight battle. Ortiz Jr. is moving to welterweight for this fight only, and if he’s successful in this tough challenge, he’ll be on the fast track to a world title at 140 pounds.

Pablo Cesar “El Demoledor” Cano (32-7-1, 22 KOs) will defend his WBC International Silver Super Lightweight Title against Michael “The Artist” Perez (25-3-2, 11 KOs) in a 10-round fight. Cano will return after his dominant knockout victory against former three-division world champion Jorge “El Niño de Oro” Linares.

Joseph “JoJo” Diaz Jr. (28-1, 14 KOs) of South El Monte, Calif. will fight against a soon-to-be-announced opponent in a 12-round battle for the vacant WBA Gold Super Featherweight Title. Diaz Jr. will return after a dominant victory against rugged warrior Charles Huerta.

Sadam “World Kid” Ali (27-2, 14 KOs) will return in a 10-round clash for the vacant USNBC Silver Welterweight Title against Anthony Young (20-2, 7 KOs) of Atlantic City, N.J.

Lamont Roach Jr. (18-0-1, 7 KOs) of Washington, D.C., will unify his WBO International Super Featherweight Title in a 10-round battle against NABO Super Featherweight Champion Jonathan Oquendo (30-5, 19 KOs) of Bayamon, Puerto Rico. He has done outstanding work with Canelo Alvarez over the years. We have all seen his amazing progression. Every fight Canelo goes out he’s only getting better, and that’s because of this trainer. I will now introduce to you, Eddy Reynoso.

EDDY REYNOSO: (Through translation.) First of all, thank you to everyone. Good morning, and thank you for all that are attending this call. We’re working just as hard as always. We know what we have in front of us. We have a tremendous champion, talented fighter, but we are working very hard, as we always do, to come out with our hand raised at the end of the night.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Thank you, Eddy. Next up, you know him as Chepo, Jose Chepo Reynoso, the trainer and also manager of Canelo Alvarez. He’s been with Canelo practically all his life. Again, we’ve seen the process that Canelo has made, and only getting better. Without any further ado, Jose Chepo Reynoso.

JOSE REYNOSO: (Through translation.) Good morning everyone. We’re very happily working, working hard to once again give the fans the best. You have two of the best fighters, “the” two best fighters in the division. We’re optimistic. We know what we have in front of us, a very difficult tasks, but very confident with the work we’re going to put in to give the fans a great fight on May 4th.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: And now I would like to introduce to you the WBC, WBA, Lineal, and Ring Magazine middleweight world champion, Canelo Alvarez.

CANELO ALVAREZ: Good morning to everyone. Very, very happy to be here and participate in this call. More than ready. More than ready to answer any questions that are asked.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Gracias. Now we will open it up for Q and A. Thank you very much.

Q. Hello everybody. Canelo, my question for you is this: You do have a common opponent with Danny in that Gennady Golovkin gave him a very he tough close fight. A lot people thought he may have won the fight when they boxed in 2017. Wondered if you ever watched that fight and what your take was on that fight and if you put anything into your mind into that as far as how you prepare your game plan to fight against Daniel Jacobs?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Yes, obviously I seen the fight. I’ve seen the fight. Not only this fight, we watch other fights to see if there is a variety, a change in different styles, how he adapts to different opponents. Based on that, we work on our strategy and prepare for what’s coming on fight night, whatever he can bring and the changes he might make.

Q. Canelo, do you think he defeated Golovkin? A lot of people think he should have gotten his hand raised that night.

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Yes, I mean, the fight was close. Could have been to anyone. For me personally, boxing is an appreciation. For me, Jacobs won the fight.

Q. Is your goal then with a victory against Danny on May 4th to fight Triple G a third time this coming fall? That’s a fight a lot of people talk about for you two guys later this year.

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) First things first. We have a tough, difficult fight ahead of us. As a team, we have a goal. The objective of this year so to win all the belts. If Golovkin has a belt, then yes. Why not? We’ve given the fans two beautiful, great fights. Why not a third?

Q. (Through translation.) How do you visualize the fight against Jacobs? How do you see it playing out?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) It’s going to be a very difficult fight, especially in the first few rounds. Until the moment that I start adapting and imposing my style it will be a difficult fight because of his style.

Q. (Through translation.) Second question is what is it that most catches your eye? What is it you most see from Jacobs?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) He’s an opponent that is very complete. He knows how to obviously change guards from south paw to orthodox. He knows how to move in the ring. Very difficult.

We know the risk of this fight, and it is a high-risk fight. A fighter of my experience, of my level, has to adapt and know how to adapt to all the levels. That’s what we’re preparing for. We’re working very hard to prepare and come out with the victory.

Q. Thank you for taking the time to talk today. There isn’t a war of the words between you and Jacobs as there was with Triple G. Do you think there is an added respect between you and Jacobs that there weren’t between and you Gennady Golovkin?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No. You guys know me. I mean, it’s never been in my character, my trait, to be offending fighters, talking bad about them. What happened in the Golovkin fight was a reaction to everything they said and they did, and they talked about me.

This particular case the fans know we’re both going to go in that ring, give it 100%, gave it our all, and provide a great fight.

Q. Do you feel an added sense of energy or enthusiasm fighting on Cinco de Mayo weekend? Does it impact your performance at all?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) It’s like all fights. Yes, obviously fighting on these important dates for my country, you know, May and September are very important for me. They motivate me. That are like all my fights. I love boxing and what I do, and that motivates me in all my fights.

Q. My first question would be is there anybody that you fought that’s similar to Jacobs style in terms of just the total package that he brings? I know when you fought Lora and Floyd they were both pretty good boxers, but they didn’t have the power he had. Gennady Golovkin was a really good power fighter, but didn’t have the same agile as Jacobs does. Is there anybody you’ve fought that has the same boxing ability and punching power that he has?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, I believe Jacobs has a unique style because he’s a very complete fighter. He can box, punch; he’s tall, agile. I fought all the styles out there, and I believe at my level with my experience, you put it all together, no matter what’s in front of me, I can adapt and overcome.

Q. Does it bother you that people keep asking Jacobs does he have to take the judges out of it, does he need to knock you out? Does it bother that so many people feel that you’ve gotten a few favorable decisions, or do you not think about that at all?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, I don’t think about it. Doesn’t bother me. Look, people are always going to have their opinions and think and criticize, but that’s part of it. That’s part of the game.

Q. And last thing just wanted to ask is it’s obviously a big fight. There is obviously no looking past Jacobs at all. You’ve all said you want to unify the titles, and Gennady Golovkin wants a third fight. There are always rumors that that’s the fight that’s going to be lined up in September. If it was up to you, assume you get past this fight, would you want to fight with Gennady Golovkin knowing how great both fights were, or would you be more interested in fighting somebody that still has his title? Which ones would you kind of prefer?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Look, the objective this year is to win all titles. My goal this year is to have all the belts. If Golovkin has a belt before the end of the year, then yes, we’ll gladly fight him. If he doesn’t, see where it falls later, how it plays out.

Right now my first objective, goal, is May 4th to pick up that belt.

Q. And my very, very last question is how is making weight? I know you just fought at 168. How is making weight for 160? Things been going smooth?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Yeah, you know, that’s always part of the game. That’s always a sacrifice, is to make weight. Working hard the weight comes off, and that’s what we’re doing.

Q. (Through translation.) When you were a young kid maybe starting in the pros, a little boy coming into boxing, did you ever imagine winning one division, two divisions, three divisions, and now possibly winning four and becoming the first Mexican in history to become an undisputed middleweight champion or world champion?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) I’m going to explain the process. When I first started as a young kid boxing I always dreamed of becoming a world champion, and I had a great example in the gym, (indiscernible) who was a champion. Through that process, through that growth, as you learn with experience and see things, I started challenging myself more and saying, Why one championship? I can go on and win more.

I’m still growing and seeing this process, and that’s what motivates me, to continue writing history and to continue reaching those goals.

Q. Canelo, you have been a professional for many years, more than ten years, and you’ve achieved a lot of your goals. As you think about your place in boxing history, what kind of legacy do you want to leave for the sport? Do you think about this now that you are a very experienced professional, about this picture of history?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) I want to be remembered as one the greats in boxing, and that’s why I continue to work hard and continue taking on these type of fights, so I can continue writing history.

Q. If you could speak to yourself as a teenager, knowing what you know now, what would you tell that younger version of Canelo?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) I would tell him to continue with that motivation, that enthusiasm, that hard work, that discipline, and continue doing what he was doing. That’s how Chepo would always tell me and remind me: You’re going to make it to as far as you want to make it.

Q. Chepo, do you think Canelo has always listened to your advice and taken it well?

JOSE CHEPO REYNOSO: (Through translation.) Yes, definitely. He listened, but not only listened, would always put it in effect, whatever the advice was. That’s what made him who he is today. He wants to, and he said it. He wants to be remembered as one of the greatest that ever boxed. That’s why he continues to learn, listen, and put it to play.

Q. (Through translation.) Being Mexican, what does it mean to fight and continue this tradition of fighting on such an important date like May 5th weekend?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, for me it’s very important to fight and continue this tradition as a Mexican. As a team it’s important to be fighting on those two important dates like it is, May and September. You know, it’s a great responsibility that comes along with it, but it’s taken care of with the hard work that we put in.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Any further questions?

Q. Canelo, I just have one simple question to ask: You’ve been fighting now in major fights for quite a while, since pretty much the first big fight you had was against Floyd Mayweather. What was its most valuable lesson you’ve learned since the Mayweather fight?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) I’ve had many fights I’ve learned. Every fight. At different levels you learn something that, and that is where I am today because of all those fights. The experience I have today is because of fights in the past.

But it’s not only those fights. It’s the ones from here on out. In boxing you never stop learning. I continue to learn and I continue to put it into practice.

Q. (Through translation.) With what you mentioned about Jacobs being a complete fighter and with what you said your goals are this year of obtaining all the belts, would you consider this a most important fight to date and that a slip, a loss here can affect your legacy and where you want to be remembered as?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Look, right now more than ever everybody wants to fight me, to beat me. Obviously that’s the biggest thing for them. They want to come and beat me.

We’re always exposed to that. In boxing anything can happen. That’s why today I train harder than ever, so that it doesn’t happen and we continue with victories and continue winning.

Q. (Through translation.) Out of all your fights, which one do you think has taught you the most and made you the fighter that you are today?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Every single one. Every single one has taught me something, given me the experience, the maturity, and made me the fighter that I am today. I learned from every single fight.

Q. (Through translation.) WBC requires 30-day pre weigh-in. You’ve turned it in a lot lower than Jacobs. How do you analyze that he may have to lose it in a rapid pace? How do you see it?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, look, it’s a part of boxing. It’s always a sacrifice to lose weight. Some lose it gradually and some wait until the week, the day before. Everybody has their own way of losing the weight.

I don’t pay attention to that. Doesn’t bother me. We just make the weight at the fight.

Q. (Through translation.) You always set goals and are looking for new challenges. There has been talks that you are willing to go up to 175 and face the likes of Kovalev. How true is that?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Yeah, everything is possible. Look, as a team we’ve always been a team to take on all challenges. That’s what motivates and drives me. But right now, the focus is 100% on May 4th and what I have in front of me at this time.

But the door is open. It’s open and it’s possible.

Q. (Through translation.) You’ve always talked about your team, Chepo and Eddy, your family, Golden Boy. What does it mean to you, your fans, all the support you have and all the love you have from your fans?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) I’m very grateful for all the support they’ve given me from the beginning of my career, from the start until where I am today. That’s why I continue giving this level of fights, so that I can leave a legacy for my family, my team, and also for them, all my fans that have supported me.

Q. Canelo, Daniel Jacobs has a weight advantage when he gets into the ring fighting middleweights. How much do you think it helped you fighting at super middleweight?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, I’m a fighter that’s very confident in my ability, what I can do, and I don’t really — that doesn’t bother me. I’ve faced the strongest fighters out there and I’m prepared for that and more. I’m an elite fighter that can adapt to that.

Q. One more question: Daniel Jacobs has fought well in a south paw stance, switched it up between orthodox and south paw. How much do you expect him to fight as south paw being they at times have given you some difficulty?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, south paws haven’t been complicated for me. I’m a fighter that can adapt to all styles and I have shown it. Jacobs switches and that’s an ability he has, but it’s impossible that he can be a better south paw than he’s going to be orthodox.

But that’s what we’re preparing for.

Q. First of all, I want to thank you very much for taking the time out. This press conference is greatly appreciated. Just really goes back to what everyone was stating in terms of your plans of getting all the belts. Is there a particular weight you would prefer to fight at, or is it whoever has a belt you’re just going to go out there and challenge them?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, it’s no secret that my ideal weight is 160 pounds, the middleweight division. Look, everybody knows I’ve always loved challenges, so if there’s challenges and title out there, and are titles out there, I’m open to it like I’ve shown in the past.

Q. My other question I have is once again, I’m sure you’re very tired of here about Triple G. Seems to be coming up a lot. With the controversy with the Triple G fights, do you feel that’s something that is always going to be mentioned with your legacy? Jacobs extends the deal with promoter Eddie Hearn that led to the ‘Miracle Man’ becoming a two-time World Middleweight champion in December, beating Sergiy Derevyanchenko to land the IBF title at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The Brooklyn favorite will meet the Mexican star and WBC and WBA king on May 4 at a venue to be announced soon, and the 31 year old expects to come out on top in what promises to be one of the biggest fights of the year.
