Yamaguchi Falcao-Chris Pearson headlines May 2 in Las Vegas

Plant City, FL (April 15, 2019) – WBC Latino middleweight champion Yamaguchi Falcao will defend his belt against Chris Pearson Thursday, May 2 at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV.

Falcao-Pearson is scheduled for ten rounds and will air live on DAZN. The bout headlines an outstanding evening of boxing brought to you by Golden Boy Promotions. Tickets from $15 are on sale by calling 702-693-5000 or online at hardrockhotel.com/las-vegas-entertainment/joint-falcao-vs-pearson-2019.php.

The two met in 2011 as part of the international amateur boxing event World Series of Boxing with Pearson winning a highly controversial split decision.

Fighting out of Plant City, FL by way of Sao Mateus, Brazil, Falcao captured a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics and is ranked #9 in the world by the World Boxing Council. As a pro, the skilled southpaw’s compiled a 16-0 record with 7 wins by knockout. Falcao was slated to fight Paul Mendez March 9 in New York but the bout was cancelled at the last minute due to issues with Mendez’ medicals.

During the last year and a half, Falcao’s repeatedly expressed his willingness to face any of the world’s best 160 pound fighters but must first get past a quality opponent.

Living and fighting out of Trotwood, OH, the hard-hitting Pearson has an excellent professional ledger of 16-2 (12 KO’s). The 28-year-old is no stranger to fighting on big platforms, most notably appearing on the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao PPV where he defeated Said El Harrak. After a setback against highly rated Justin DeLoach, he’s won his last two bouts by knockout and looks to make it three straight against Falcao.

“I am extremely grateful to be fighting on this platform,” said Falcao, who became a father last month. “It was heartbreaking when the Mendez fight fell apart on such short notice because I was looking forward to welcoming my son Roberto into this world after I beat Mendez but everything happens for a reason.”

He’s also pleased he’ll have a shot at redemption May 2.

“This fight is very personal to me. I’m planning to knock Chris out because he did not beat me the first time – the judges handed it to him! This is an even bigger opportunity than the Mendez fight because its two days before Canelo vs Danny Jacobs and now when I return home, baby Roberto will be waiting for me. This is my time to shine and show the world
I’m a problem in the middleweight division!”

DANIEL ‘MIRACLE MAN’ JACOBS DISCUSSES HIS MENTAL PREPARATION AHEAD OF HIS FIGHT AGAINST CANELO ALVAREZ

NEW YORK CITY (April 11, 2019): Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs (35-2, 29 KOs), IBF Middleweight World Champion, talked about his mental preparation ahead of his unification fight against WBC, WBA, Lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight World Champion. Canelo Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs). The 12-round fight will take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Saturday, May 4 and will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN.

Jacobs, 32, feels he has the mental advantage after having overcome a tough battle with cancer. The native of Brooklyn, New York also noted that he has a strategic advantage over Canelo because he has studied him for his entire career and because of his unique blend of abilities.

Below is what Daniel Jacobs had to say after a recent workout:

“This is my opportunity to prove what I have been saying, that I am the best middleweight in the world. Doing the impossible is not new to me. Ten years ago, I was in a wheelchair in the hospital. Fast forward to now and I’m fighting for middleweight supremacy. You can’t make this story up, and I feel like this is my destiny.”

“I’ve looked death in the eyes. It happened when I was in the hospital bed with my back to the wall after doctors told me that I had cancer and would never box again. I’ve been through the toughest of all mental battles. I see it and feel it. Canelo hasn’t faced and beaten an opponent like cancer, but I have, so to me I am already a victor.”

“Canelo is a true champion with superstar status who has fought so many great fighters, so to step in the ring with him is an honor for me. But aside from that, my legacy is on the line here. I have so much to gain from this fight, and I look forward to doing that and giving the fans a great show. I want to be a Hall of Famer one day, and you only achieve that by fighting the best like Canelo.”

“I was surprised in a way when the fight was getting close, and I was still worried until the contracts were signed. I didn’t believe that I would get the fight even when we were negotiating because anything can happen in boxing. Sometimes you hear things. You hear people say that Canelo doesn’t want to fight the best guys out there. But I was confident in my team getting it done, and I take my hat off to Canelo and his team for taking the fight. Now it’s time to put on something great for the fans.”

“Canelo wanted to make history against Rocky [Fielding], and I respect that. It was an easy fight, but he’d had two hard fights with GGG before that, and they were tough and great matches. He’s a champion; you know he’s going to bring it and that just brings the best out of me.”

“To prepare for a fight, you have to study film and look at flaws and things you can exploit, but I’ve been studying Canelo for all of my career as I was a fan of him and still am. I know his style and I don’t need to watch his fights with Golovkin and compare them to my fight with Golovkin as every fighter is different and every fight is different. For me, it’s all about adjusting on the night because I can plan for the Canelo that fought GGG and he can be a completely different style on the night. GGG is not as fast as me and I’m bigger. I’m sharper.”

“Every fighter has a flaw or makes mistakes that you can exploit. I’m a longer fighter. I’m just as fast, I’m stronger and I have skills, too. I am not like the recent opponents that just come forward. I can go back and side-to-side and I can switch stances. I can do a bit of everything in the ring, so it’s going to be a challenging fight for him and I really believe my hand will be raised that night.”

“Andre Rozier is one of the greatest trainers of our generation, and I trust him 100 percent. We’re going to be in great shape and totally prepped. I just have to be the best me as I have all the weapons and components to beat him and prove I am the number one Middleweight out there.”

“My life and my story resonate with a lot of people all around the world, so I am not worried about becoming a bigger star, that’s not my focus. In my opinion, I am already a great person outside the ring and I set a great example for people that follow in my footsteps, especially from my neighborhood. I’m doing my job in that aspect.”

“We don’t need to talk trash. That’s not what I am about, and I don’t think he is either. I’ve done it before with some opposition because if it’s in them and if you want to be about it, I can be about it. Trust me. But truly I am a person who likes to show respect and I want the fans to see that because as fighters, we can have negative things placed on us from the past. I want to be a stand-up guy that represents the sport because that’s what we are doing; we are ambassadors for boxing and at the elite level.”

Canelo vs. Jacobs is a 12-round fight for the WBC, WBA, Lineal, Ring Magazine and IBF Middleweight World Titles presented by Golden Boy in association with Matchroom Boxing. The event is sponsored by Tecate, “THE OFFICIAL BEER OF BOXING” and Hennessy “Never Stop. Tickets for “Canelo vs Jacobs” can be purchased online at www.FathomEvents.com or at participating theater box offices now.

The live broadcast of “Canelo vs Jacobs” presented by Fathom Events and Golden Boy is set for Saturday, May 4 beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET / 8:00 p.m. CT / 7:00 p.m. MT / 6:00 p.m. PT / 5:00 p.m. AK / 4:00 p.m HI. Boxing fans throughout the U.S. will be able to enjoy the event in more than 500 select movie theaters through Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network (DBN). A complete list of theater locations is available on the Fathom Events website (theaters and participants are subject to change).

Canelo, 28, a native of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, became the top man in the sport by giving fans the biggest and most entertaining fights. At 154 pounds, Canelo captured several world titles and defeated the likes of Austin “No Doubt” Trout, Sugar Shane Mosley, Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo, Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara and Liam “Beefy” Smith. Canelo, however, scored his most significant victory at 160 pounds when he defeated Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in their highly anticipated rematch in September 2018 and established himself as the WBC, WBA, Lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight World Champion.

In his super middleweight debut, Canelo became a three-division world champion by knocking out Rocky Fielding in three rounds to capture the WBA Super Middleweight World Title in December 2018. Canelo will return to middleweight for this fight as he continues to clean out the 160-pound division.

Jacobs, 31, is a native of Brooklyn, New York and is widely considered one of the best middleweights of this era. Jacobs rose up the middleweight rankings to win the WBA Middleweight World Title against Jarrod Fletcher in 2014 after being away from the sport for 19 months due to a form of bone cancer that he courageously overcame. Jacobs made several successful defenses including a thunderous first-round knockout of Peter Quillin the following year. Although he lost to Gennady Golovkin in a very close fight in 2017, Jacobs returned stronger than ever, defeating former amateur champion and middleweight contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko to capture the IBF Middleweight World Championship. Jacobs will look to capture more middleweight hardware in the biggest fight of his career.

“We are proud to partner again with our friends at Golden Boy to bring this unification bout to cinemas nationwide,” said Ray Nutt, Fathom Events CEO. “Fight fans have loved watching Canelo on big screen and we expect them to really enjoy this battle with Daniel Jacobs.”

DAVID LEMIEUX MOVES UP TO SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT TO FACE JOHN ‘THE GORILLA’ RYDER IN CO-MAIN EVENT OF CANELO VS. JACOBS

LAS VEGAS (April 10, 2019): David Lemieux (40-4, 34 KOs) will make his 168-pound debut when he takes on John “The Gorilla” Ryder (27-4, 15 KOs) in the scheduled 12-round co-main event of Canelo vs. Jacobs. The card will also feature the returns of Vergil Ortiz Jr., Pablo Cesar “El Demoledor” Cano, Joseph “JoJo” Diaz Jr., Sadam “World Kid” Ali and Lamont Roach Jr., in separate bouts. The event will take place Saturday, May 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN.

“There comes a time when every fighter must move up in weight, and now is that time for David Lemieux,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy. “Lemieux was the hardest-hitting puncher in the 160-pound division, and I’m absolutely certain he will be the biggest puncher at 168 pounds. John Ryder will be in for a tough fight on May 4. Also, this undercard will feature some of our brightest stars, including Vergil Ortiz Jr., who with only 12 fights will face a tough veteran in Mauricio Herrera. Golden Boy and DAZN have crafted an excellent night of action, so don’t miss out on this one!”

Lemieux, 30, was last seen on the televised pay-per-view undercard of Canelo vs. GGG 2 when he scored a first-round knockout victory against Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan. The native of Montreal, Canada promises to be stronger than ever in his super middleweight debut.

“I’ve seen [John] Ryder fight,” said David Lemieux. “He’s a credible rival, but I’m going to make a statement out of what I’m going to do with him. At 168, I’m going to be the strongest that I’ve ever been.”

Ryder is a 30-year-old native of London who is the No. 1 contender for the WBA Super Middleweight Title. Ryder has faced tough opposition, including a close fight against Rocky Fielding and a tough battle against Billy Joe Saunders. The “Gorilla” is coming off a seventh-round technical knockout win against previously undefeated Andrey Sirotkin, and he’ll look to retain his shot at the title with a win against Lemieux.

“I’m fully focused on the fight with David Lemieux, but obviously there’s a massive pot of gold for the winner,” said John Ryder. “There’s the potential for a fight with Canelo or a fight with Callum Smith, which are both huge. Lemieux is a big puncher if you stand in front of him. I’m a boxer-fighter. I’ll box him at times and fight him at other times when it suits me. Our fighting styles are sure to gel for a great fight. I’m expecting to win and to win well. I’m there to keep my mandatory position.”

“We can’t wait for David to show that he can be a powerhouse in the super middleweight division. What better way to demonstrate this than by fighting the No. 1 contender in John Ryder!,” said Camille Estephan, President of Eye of the Tiger Management.

“This is a great fight on a great night of boxing,” said Eddie Hearn, Managing Director of Matchroom Sport. “John Ryder has been on a tremendous run, and now takes to the big stage in Las Vegas with the dangerous David Lemieux. It’s a huge fight for both with the winner being mandatory challenger for Callum Smith, and I fully expect that to be John Ryder.”

The undercard for this explosive co-main event will be filled with Golden Boy’s current and future stars.

Vergil Ortiz Jr. (12-0, 12 KOs) will face the biggest test of his career when he takes on Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera (24-8, 7 KOs) in a 10-round welterweight battle. Ortiz Jr. is moving to welterweight for this fight only, and if he’s successful in this tough challenge, he’ll be on the fast track to a world title at 140 pounds.

Pablo Cesar “El Demoledor” Cano (32-7-1, 22 KOs) will defend his WBC International Silver Super Lightweight Title against Michael “The Artist” Perez (25-3-2, 11 KOs) in a 10-round fight. Cano will return after his dominant knockout victory against former three-division world champion Jorge “El Niño de Oro” Linares.

Joseph “JoJo” Diaz Jr. (28-1, 14 KOs) of South El Monte, Calif. will fight against a soon-to-be-announced opponent in a 12-round battle for the vacant WBA Gold Super Featherweight Title. Diaz Jr. will return after a dominant victory against rugged warrior Charles Huerta.

Sadam “World Kid” Ali (27-2, 14 KOs) will return in a 10-round clash for the vacant USNBC Silver Welterweight Title against Anthony Young (20-2, 7 KOs) of Atlantic City, N.J.

Lamont Roach Jr. (18-0-1, 7 KOs) of Washington, D.C., will unify his WBO International Super Featherweight Title in a 10-round battle against NABO Super Featherweight Champion Jonathan Oquendo (30-5, 19 KOs) of Bayamon, Puerto Rico. The winner of this bout will earn the No. 1 spot for the WBO Super Featherweight World Title.

Alexis Espino (1-0, 1 KO) of Las Vegas, Nevada will participate in a four-round super middleweight fight against a soon-to-be announced opponent.

Canelo vs. Jacobs is a 12-round fight for the WBC, WBA, Lineal, Ring Magazine and IBF Middleweight World Titles presented by Golden Boy in association with Matchroom Boxing. Lemieux vs. Ryder is a 12-round super middleweight battle presented by Golden Boy in association with Eye of the Tiger Management and Matchroom Boxing. CANELO ALVAREZ INTERNATIONAL MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

LOS ANGELES (April 9, 2019): Canelo Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs), WBC, WBA, Lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight World Champion, hosted an international media
conference call today to discuss his upcoming 12-round unification fight against IBF Middleweight World Champion Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs (35-2, 29 KOs). Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy, along with Jose “Chepo” Reynoso and Eddy Reynoso, also participated on the call. The event will take place Saturday, May 4, 2019 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN.

Below is what today’s participants had to say on the call:

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Thank you very much. Hello all, and thank you for dialing in for the Canelo Alvarez international media conference call. On May 4th Canelo Alvarez will take a step closer to becoming undisputed champion as he defends his WBC, WBA, and Lineal championships, and the Ring Magazine middleweight world titles in a 12-round unification course fight against IBF word champion Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs, who has an outstanding record of 35 and 2 and 29 knockouts.

This event will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas where Canelo Alvarez has introduced this arena to the boxing world. He will now be making his fifth appearance there before yet another packed house. Tickets for this event are running out fast. You can get your tickets at www.tmobilearena.com or www.AXS.com. This champion-versus-champion event will be streamed exclusively live on The Zone DAZN sports streaming platform blowing up the fight game. I want to thank our partners at DAZN for providing us at Golden Boy with the best platform in boxing.

I also want to thank our sponsors Tecate, the official beer of boxing, and Hennessy, Never stop, never settle, for their continued support.

We will now introduce today’s participants before we open it up for Q and A for the media. So first off, let me introduce to you the head trainer and manager of Canelo Alvarez. This man is also showing his capabilities as a great trainer with one of our rising stars, Ryan Garcia, and he is a potential training of the year.

He has done outstanding work with Canelo Alvarez over the years. We have all seen his amazing progression. Every fight Canelo goes out he’s only getting better, and that’s because of this trainer. I will now introduce to you, Eddy Reynoso.

EDDY REYNOSO: (Through translation.) First of all, thank you to everyone. Good morning, and thank you for all that are attending this call. We’re working just as hard as always. We know what we have in front of us. We have a tremendous champion, talented fighter, but we are working very hard, as we always do, to come out with our hand raised at the end of the night.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Thank you, Eddy. Next up, you know him as Chepo, Jose Chepo Reynoso, the trainer and also manager of Canelo Alvarez. He’s been with Canelo practically all his life. Again, we’ve seen the process that Canelo has made, and only getting better. Without any further ado, Jose Chepo Reynoso.

JOSE REYNOSO: (Through translation.) Good morning everyone. We’re very happily working, working hard to once again give the fans the best. You have two of the best fighters, “the” two best fighters in the division. We’re optimistic. We know what we have in front of us, a very difficult tasks, but very confident with the work we’re going to put in to give the fans a great fight on May 4th.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: And now I would like to introduce to you the WBC, WBA, Lineal, and Ring Magazine middleweight world champion, Canelo Alvarez.

Canelo.

CANELO ALVAREZ: Good morning to everyone. Very, very happy to be here and participate in this call. More than ready. More than ready to answer any questions that are asked.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Gracias. Now we will open it up for Q and A. Thank you very much.

Q. Hello everybody. Canelo, my question for you is this: You do have a common opponent with Danny in that Gennady Golovkin gave him a very he tough close fight. A lot people thought he may have won the fight when they boxed in 2017. Wondered if you ever watched that fight and what your take was on that fight and if you put anything into your mind into that as far as how you prepare your game plan to fight against Daniel Jacobs?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Yes, obviously I seen the fight. I’ve seen the fight. Not only this fight, we watch other fights to see if there is a variety, a change in different styles, how he adapts to different opponents. Based on that, we work on our strategy and prepare for what’s coming on fight night, whatever he can bring and the changes he might make.

Q. Canelo, do you think he defeated Golovkin? A lot of people think he should have gotten his hand raised that night.

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Yes, I mean, the fight was close. Could have been to anyone. For me personally, boxing is an appreciation. For me, Jacobs won the fight.

Q. Is your goal then with a victory against Danny on May 4th to fight Triple G a third time this coming fall? That’s a fight a lot of people talk about for you two guys later this year.

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) First things first. We have a tough, difficult fight ahead of us. As a team, we have a goal. The objective of this year so to win all the belts. If Golovkin has a belt, then yes. Why not? We’ve given the fans two beautiful, great fights. Why not a third?

Q. (Through translation.) How do you visualize the fight against Jacobs? How do you see it playing out?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) It’s going to be a very difficult fight, especially in the first few rounds. Until the moment that I start adapting and imposing my style it will be a difficult fight because of his style.

Q. (Through translation.) Second question is what is it that most catches your eye? What is it you most see from Jacobs?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) He’s an opponent that is very complete. He knows how to obviously change guards from south paw to orthodox. He knows how to move in the ring. Very difficult.

We know the risk of this fight, and it is a high-risk fight. A fighter of my experience, of my level, has to adapt and know how to adapt to all the levels. That’s what we’re preparing for. We’re working very hard to prepare and come out with the victory.

Q. Thank you for taking the time to talk today. There isn’t a war of the words between you and Jacobs as there was with Triple G. Do you think there is an added respect between you and Jacobs that there weren’t between and you Gennady Golovkin?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No. You guys know me. I mean, it’s never been in my character, my trait, to be offending fighters, talking bad about them. What happened in the Golovkin fight was a reaction to everything they said and they did, and they talked about me.

This particular case the fans know we’re both going to go in that ring, give it 100%, gave it our all, and provide a great fight.

Q. Do you feel an added sense of energy or enthusiasm fighting on Cinco de Mayo weekend? Does it impact your performance at all?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) It’s like all fights. Yes, obviously fighting on these important dates for my country, you know, May and September are very important for me. They motivate me. That are like all my fights. I love boxing and what I do, and that motivates me in all my fights.

Q. My first question would be is there anybody that you fought that’s similar to Jacobs style in terms of just the total package that he brings? I know when you fought Lora and Floyd they were both pretty good boxers, but they didn’t have the power he had. Gennady Golovkin was a really good power fighter, but didn’t have the same agile as Jacobs does. Is there anybody you’ve fought that has the same boxing ability and punching power that he has?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, I believe Jacobs has a unique style because he’s a very complete fighter. He can box, punch; he’s tall, agile. I fought all the styles out there, and I believe at my level with my experience, you put it all together, no matter what’s in front of me, I can adapt and overcome.

Q. Does it bother you that people keep asking Jacobs does he have to take the judges out of it, does he need to knock you out? Does it bother that so many people feel that you’ve gotten a few favorable decisions, or do you not think about that at all?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, I don’t think about it. Doesn’t bother me. Look, people are always going to have their opinions and think and criticize, but that’s part of it. That’s part of the game.

Q. And last thing just wanted to ask is it’s obviously a big fight. There is obviously no looking past Jacobs at all. You’ve all said you want to unify the titles, and Gennady Golovkin wants a third fight. There are always rumors that that’s the fight that’s going to be lined up in September. If it was up to you, assume you get past this fight, would you want to fight with Gennady Golovkin knowing how great both fights were, or would you be more interested in fighting somebody that still has his title? Which ones would you kind of prefer?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Look, the objective this year is to win all titles. My goal this year is to have all the belts. If Golovkin has a belt before the end of the year, then yes, we’ll gladly fight him. If he doesn’t, see where it falls later, how it plays out.

Right now my first objective, goal, is May 4th to pick up that belt.

Q. And my very, very last question is how is making weight? I know you just fought at 168. How is making weight for 160? Things been going smooth?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Yeah, you know, that’s always part of the game. That’s always a sacrifice, is to make weight. Working hard the weight comes off, and that’s what we’re doing.

Q. (Through translation.) When you were a young kid maybe starting in the pros, a little boy coming into boxing, did you ever imagine winning one division, two divisions, three divisions, and now possibly winning four and becoming the first Mexican in history to become an undisputed middleweight champion or world champion?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) I’m going to explain the process. When I first started as a young kid boxing I always dreamed of becoming a world champion, and I had a great example in the gym, (indiscernible) who was a champion. Through that process, through that growth, as you learn with experience and see things, I started challenging myself more and saying, Why one championship? I can go on and win more.

I’m still growing and seeing this process, and that’s what motivates me, to continue writing history and to continue reaching those goals.

Q. Canelo, you have been a professional for many years, more than ten years, and you’ve achieved a lot of your goals. As you think about your place in boxing history, what kind of legacy do you want to leave for the sport? Do you think about this now that you are a very experienced professional, about this picture of history?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) I want to be remembered as one the greats in boxing, and that’s why I continue to work hard and continue taking on these type of fights, so I can continue writing history.

Q. If you could speak to yourself as a teenager, knowing what you know now, what would you tell that younger version of Canelo?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) I would tell him to continue with that motivation, that enthusiasm, that hard work, that discipline, and continue doing what he was doing. That’s how Chepo would always tell me and remind me: You’re going to make it to as far as you want to make it.

Q. Chepo, do you think Canelo has always listened to your advice and taken it well?

JOSE CHEPO REYNOSO: (Through translation.) Yes, definitely. He listened, but not only listened, would always put it in effect, whatever the advice was. That’s what made him who he is today. He wants to, and he said it. He wants to be remembered as one of the greatest that ever boxed. That’s why he continues to learn, listen, and put it to play.

Q. (Through translation.) Being Mexican, what does it mean to fight and continue this tradition of fighting on such an important date like May 5th weekend?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, for me it’s very important to fight and continue this tradition as a Mexican. As a team it’s important to be fighting on those two important dates like it is, May and September. You know, it’s a great responsibility that comes along with it, but it’s taken care of with the hard work that we put in.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Any further questions?

Q. Canelo, I just have one simple question to ask: You’ve been fighting now in major fights for quite a while, since pretty much the first big fight you had was against Floyd Mayweather. What was its most valuable lesson you’ve learned since the Mayweather fight?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) I’ve had many fights I’ve learned. Every fight. At different levels you learn something that, and that is where I am today because of all those fights. The experience I have today is because of fights in the past.

But it’s not only those fights. It’s the ones from here on out. In boxing you never stop learning. I continue to learn and I continue to put it into practice.

Q. (Through translation.) With what you mentioned about Jacobs being a complete fighter and with what you said your goals are this year of obtaining all the belts, would you consider this a most important fight to date and that a slip, a loss here can affect your legacy and where you want to be remembered as?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Look, right now more than ever everybody wants to fight me, to beat me. Obviously that’s the biggest thing for them. They want to come and beat me.

We’re always exposed to that. In boxing anything can happen. That’s why today I train harder than ever, so that it doesn’t happen and we continue with victories and continue winning.

Q. (Through translation.) Out of all your fights, which one do you think has taught you the most and made you the fighter that you are today?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Every single one. Every single one has taught me something, given me the experience, the maturity, and made me the fighter that I am today. I learned from every single fight.

Q. (Through translation.) WBC requires 30-day pre weigh-in. You’ve turned it in a lot lower than Jacobs. How do you analyze that he may have to lose it in a rapid pace? How do you see it?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, look, it’s a part of boxing. It’s always a sacrifice to lose weight. Some lose it gradually and some wait until the week, the day before. Everybody has their own way of losing the weight.

I don’t pay attention to that. Doesn’t bother me. We just make the weight at the fight.

Q. (Through translation.) You always set goals and are looking for new challenges. There has been talks that you are willing to go up to 175 and face the likes of Kovalev. How true is that?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) Yeah, everything is possible. Look, as a team we’ve always been a team to take on all challenges. That’s what motivates and drives me. But right now, the focus is 100% on May 4th and what I have in front of me at this time.

But the door is open. It’s open and it’s possible.

Q. (Through translation.) You’ve always talked about your team, Chepo and Eddy, your family, Golden Boy. What does it mean to you, your fans, all the support you have and all the love you have from your fans?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) I’m very grateful for all the support they’ve given me from the beginning of my career, from the start until where I am today. That’s why I continue giving this level of fights, so that I can leave a legacy for my family, my team, and also for them, all my fans that have supported me.

Q. Canelo, Daniel Jacobs has a weight advantage when he gets into the ring fighting middleweights. How much do you think it helped you fighting at super middleweight?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, I’m a fighter that’s very confident in my ability, what I can do, and I don’t really — that doesn’t bother me. I’ve faced the strongest fighters out there and I’m prepared for that and more. I’m an elite fighter that can adapt to that.

Q. One more question: Daniel Jacobs has fought well in a south paw stance, switched it up between orthodox and south paw. How much do you expect him to fight as south paw being they at times have given you some difficulty?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, south paws haven’t been complicated for me. I’m a fighter that can adapt to all styles and I have shown it. Jacobs switches and that’s an ability he has, but it’s impossible that he can be a better south paw than he’s going to be orthodox.

But that’s what we’re preparing for.

Q. First of all, I want to thank you very much for taking the time out. This press conference is greatly appreciated. Just really goes back to what everyone was stating in terms of your plans of getting all the belts. Is there a particular weight you would prefer to fight at, or is it whoever has a belt you’re just going to go out there and challenge them?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No, it’s no secret that my ideal weight is 160 pounds, the middleweight division. Look, everybody knows I’ve always loved challenges, so if there’s challenges and title out there, and are titles out there, I’m open to it like I’ve shown in the past.

Q. My other question I have is once again, I’m sure you’re very tired of here about Triple G. Seems to be coming up a lot. With the controversy with the Triple G fights, do you feel that’s something that is always going to be mentioned with your legacy? Do you feel it’s unfair, and that you have had a great career and the Triple G fights keep coming up?

CANELO ALVAREZ: (Through translation.) No. It’s normal. It’s normal. Look, today we still talk about Leonard and Duran and Hagler and Leonard. They’re great fights. People are going to always talk about them.

Right now my objective is May 4th. That’s where my focus is. If a third fight happens, it’ll be better than the first two. Right now my concentration and focus is on May 4th.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Thank you very much to all the media. We greatly appreciate it. This concludes the international press conference call.

LIVE VIDEO: Canelo vs Jacobs LA Press Conference

CANELO ALVAREZ AND DANIEL ‘MIRACLE MAN’ JACOBS MEXICO CITY PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

MEXICO CITY (March 1, 2019): Canelo Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs), WBC, WBA, Lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight World Champion, and Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs(35-2, 29 KOs), IBF Middleweight World Champion, completed the second stop of their three-city press tour with a full day of interviews and a press conference at the TV Azteca Studios in Mexico City, Mexico. The 12-round unification fight will take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Saturday May 4 and will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN.

Below is what today’s participants had to say at the event:

CANELO ALVAREZ, WBC, WBA, Lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight World Champion:

“It’s important to fight in May and September on the dates where Mexican fighters have represented the country. I accept the responsibility of participating in big fights like these. It’s an honor to represent my country the way others have.”

“This will not be my last fight at 160 pounds. It’s the weight where I feel best. I will be here for a while. I would still like to have challenges at 168, but I’m fine at 160 pounds.”

“All fighters look for the knockout. It’s always spectacular. I will go out there to look for it. But I will train for 12 rounds. If the opportunity for the knockout presents itself, I will take it.”

DANIEL JACOBS, IBF Middleweight World Champion:

“This means everything to me. I take my hat off to Canelo for accepting this fight. He’s a true champion to me. That said, it’s our duty to make sure you all receive a great fight. I will bring my arsenal to make sure it’s a great fight.”

“Whether it ends by knockout or decision, you will see a great battle. I can speak for Canelo and myself by saying that we will give everything in this fight. I guarantee that I will not only be champion on May 4, but also king.”

EDDY REYNOSO, Head Trainer and Manager of Canelo Alvarez:

“This is what we wanted. We wanted big fights to leave a big footprint in the history of boxing. It appeared impossible at first. Based on hard work and discipline, we grew little by little-he as a fighter and we as trainers. Thank you to Saul for your loyalty and of believing in us.

“Now the only thing left is to prepare day by day in boxing. We have a big fight, and I want Canelo to be the first-ever Mexican fighter to unify all the titles in a division. No one has ever done that, but Saul will.”

JOSE “CHEPO” REYNOSO, Trainer and Manager of Canelo Alvarez:

“I can’t help but remember watching him fight here for the first time. But the times have changed. I feel nostalgic seeing so many people and seeing what the presence of Canelo does to the boxing public. There have been many years of working to get where we are. Thank you, Saul. Thank you for believing in us.”

“This May 4, you will see a great fight. They say styles make fights. And that’s what will happen in this fight. We have the two best middleweights in the world. When you have the best fighters in the world fighting each other, you can expect a great fight.”

ANDRE ROZIER, Trainer of Danny Jacobs:

“Danny is a very special individual. He is a dedicated, hardworking family man. He has survived a lot on his life. I affectionately refer to him as my son. We have worked for a long time to get this far. On May 4, when he steps into the ring, I will look forward to him finishing the fight with his hand raised.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions:

“This fight is important because it will feature two world champions who will unify their titles to demonstrate who is the best at 160 pounds. This battle is also significant because it features two of the most resilient fighters in the history of the sport.”

“With Canelo, we have a young man who has fought as a professional since the age of 15. He’s fought the best fighters at 147 and 154, and in December moved up to 168 pounds to become a three-division world champion. With Jacobs, we have a man who defeated a challenge much tougher than a fight: a battle with cancer. He then returned to win two world titles.”

“May 4 will be a great night for Golden Boy and we expect a tremendous performance from our champion, Canelo Alvarez.”

EDDIE HEARN, Managing Director of Matchroom Sport:

“I want to congratulate many people involved in this promotion. We thank Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo for accepting this challenge. We want to thank DAZN, who are really changing the sport in the United States. We want to thank Tecate, the sponsors, and TV Azteca, for hosting this magnificent event.”

“When you have a champion like Canelo who wants to be the best and fights the best, we have what it makes for a great moment. With Danny Jacobs, he will not only face a great champion, but a great man. They told him he may not live again and might not walk again. They also told him that he would definitely never fight again. But here he is. We have a fight that you will forget on May 4.”

JOSEPH MARKOWSKI, Executive Vice President, DAZN North America:

“Boxing is having a bit of a moment. And after much discussion and investment across the industry, this fight – Canelo vs. Jacobs – stands out to me as the most significant matchup on the calendar. This is the fight of the year and I am very, very proud to say that DAZN will be broadcasting it exclusively in the U.S.”

“Simply put, this fight has got everything. Champion vs. champion. A global superstar. An inspiring New Yorker with a story for the history books. And a world-class venue in the world-class fight city. The only thing missing from this blockbuster showdown is the pay-per-view price tag – and that’s because DAZN is different.”

“And so, to the two DAZN fighters on this stage, I wish you tremendous luck in camp over the next two months and I look forward to seeing you in Las Vegas for this great fight.”

Canelo vs. Jacobs is a 12-round fight for the WBC, WBA, Lineal, Ring Magazine and IBF Middleweight World Titles presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Matchroom Boxing. VIDEO: Canelo vs Jacobs – Mexico City Press Conference

CANELO ALVAREZ AND DANIEL ‘MIRACLE MAN’ JACOBS NEW YORK CITY PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

NEW YORK CITY (Feb. 27, 2019): Canelo Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs), WBC, WBA, Lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight World Champion, and Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs (35-2, 29 KOs), IBF Middleweight World Champion, hosted a press conference today at Hard Rock Cafe in New York City ahead of their 12-round unification fight during the celebratory weekend of Cinco de Mayo. The champion-vs.-champion event will take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas Saturday, May 4 and will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN.

Below is what today’s participants had to say at the event:

CANELO ALVAREZ, WBC, WBA, Lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight World Champion:

“I’ve always liked challenges, and this is not an exception. We know what Daniel Jacobs brings: his ability, his qualities, his talent. He knows how to move well in the ring. We’ll do what we always do to prepare ourselves to the fullest and to give the fans a great fight. This is not going to be an exception and we’re going to come out with our hands raised.”

“We know his style is going to be very difficult, very complicated, but at this level, that’s what you have to face. We’re prepared, we’re going to train, and we’re going to work for whatever he’s going to bring.”

“Anything can happen. We’ll go in there looking for the knockout but prepare for the 12 rounds, expecting the unexpected. We’re ready for it.”

DANIEL JACOBS, IBF Middleweight World Champion:

“Much respect to Golden Boy and Canelo for accepting this fight. You’re a true champion and stepping in with another champion says a lot. I tip my hat off to you but I’m looking for a tremendous fight for the fans. Obviously my legacy is on the line. His legacy is already well-established so, for me, it’s about capturing all the titles and solidifying my legacy for my own right.”

“I never ever had it easy. I always had the long road, had to jump over hurdle after hurdle after hurdle, and when I step into the ring May 4th, that will be the last hurdle I ever have to step over because I will be declared the unified middleweight champion of the world. We have worked so hard for this moment.”

If you understand, boxing styles make fights. You can’t automatically think that because he defeated Golovkin, he’ll beat me. Physically I’m the bigger man. Golovkin was bigger than him and I’m bigger than Golovkin. Rocky was the biggest fighter that Canelo has faced, but he didn’t possess the skill set that I have. So, that’s the difference.”

EDDY REYNOSO, Head Trainer and Manager of Canelo Alvarez:

“After Canelo, the next best middleweight is Daniel Jacobs, and we know it’s going to be a strong fight. This year, we want to sweep the middleweight division and Daniel is in the way, so he’s going to have to lose. We’re going to do what we always do, prepare strong and properly. We won’t take any shortcuts because in 2019, we’re sweeping the division.”

JOSE “CHEPO” REYNOSO, Trainer and Manager of Canelo Alvarez:

“We’re happy to be here after Canelo conquered a new division and won the super middleweight title in December. What a better way to announce his next fight being here in New York. We promise that when we have two great fighters, you’re going to get a great fight. Canelo was born for these challenges and to win these challenges.”

ANDRE ROZIER, Trainer of Danny Jacobs:

“Canelo and Jacobs are two of my favorite fighters but my son [Jacobs] is my favorite fighter. We’re going to work very hard so that the last hand to be raised will be from the miracle man. He’s hungry to show the world how special he is. He’s done what no other man has done. He fears no man and has no need to. He’s been anointed as elite and come May 4th, Daniel “the miracle man” Jacobs will be the undisputed middleweight champion of the world.”

“The best part about this event is it will be streamed live on DAZN. With DAZN, you can watch anytime, anywhere. Together with DAZN, we’re committed to making boxing more accessible and affordable for all fans, without the price of pay-per-view.”

“May 4 will be a historic night for Golden Boy and we expect a great performance by our champion Canelo as he delivers a great victory.”

EDDIE HEARN, Managing Director of Matchroom Sport:

“This is an amazing moment for DAZN and fight fans. For a long time, you’ve been paying a lot of money for the super fights and that’s really about to change.”

“We have to give a huge amount of credit to Canelo and Oscar and the team. They know how tough this fight is. You see just a little bit of worry…isn’t it great that we have a super fight? Isn’t it great that we have a moment in this sport when two great champions could come together?”

“For a long, long time since we signed Daniel Jacobs, he has told me three special words: ‘Bring me Canelo.’ And on May 4, he finally has the chance.”

“I have never been so confident in a 50-50 fight. I believe this young man walks with faith and I believe on May 4th, he will become the unified middleweight champion in the world. Faith is a wonderful thing and when you combine it with talent, you can’t beat it.”

JOSEPH MARKOWSKI, Executive Vice President, DAZN North America:

“Boxing is having a bit of a moment right now. This fight stands out as the most significant of the calendar year that DAZN will stream exclusively. It’s champion vs. champion, we have a global superstar in Canelo and an inspiring New York story with Jacobs. Having a world class location is just the icing on the cake. With any other network, a fight like this would cost up to $100, and with DAZN we’re having a transformational moment for the business of boxing by offering an affordable viewing option.”

JACOBS ‘HONORED’ TO PEN MATCHROOM BOXING USA AND DAZN DEAL

Daniel Jacobs says he’s thrilled to have has signed a three-fight deal with Matchroom Boxing USA and DAZN – with the first fight of the deal a blockbuster World Middleweight unification showdown with Canelo Alvarez on Cinco de Mayo weekend, live on DAZN.

Jacobs extends the deal with promoter Eddie Hearn that led to the ‘Miracle Man’ becoming a two-time World Middleweight champion in December, beating Sergiy Derevyanchenko to land the IBF title at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The Brooklyn favorite will meet the Mexican star and WBC and WBA king on May 4 at a venue to be announced soon, and the 31 year old expects to come out on top in what promises to be one of the biggest fights of the year.

“It is such an honor and privilege to be a part of DAZN and Matchroom Boxing – thank you guys for believing in me,” said Jacobs. “Displaying my skills on such a platform would do wonders for my career I have an opportunity to make history! Plus I have the best team to ensure the best possible opportunities for my career.

“This is the moment that I’ve been waiting for my whole entire career I’ve been through so much in life just to get to this point, I look forward to taking advantage of such an amazing opportunity. Canelo is a great champion and a worthy opponent to ensure an epic fight the fans will remember for ages!! in order to be the best, you have to beat the best – this with this fight represents to me.”

“Danny is where it all started for us in America and I want to thank him for believing in us,” said Hearn. “It has been a pleasure working with him and his manager Keith Connolly who has fought every inch to get Danny the best opportunities and position within the sport.

“Danny captured the World title under our guidance and now he enters one of the biggest fights in World boxing to establish his position as the world’s number one Middleweight. Above that he is a man of class and humbleness and we will always be grateful that he was the trail blazer for US fighters to sign with Matchroom Boxing.

“For DAZN this is another major signing as we continue to build an emphatic team of fighters – Jacobs vs. Canelo is a wonderful addition for subscribers and fans, it truly is one of the great fights in boxing today.”

“We are super excited to have re-signed with Matchroom Boxing,” said Connolly. “Eddie has done a fabulous job guiding Danny to a World title and now a mega fight. He has delivered on everything he said he would when we first met him.

“We are grateful that DAZN has such belief in Daniel Jacobs as they look to push him into superstardom over the next chapter of his career.”

Canelo Alvarez, Danny Jacobs agree to fight on May 4

LAS VEGAS – Canelo Alvarez and Danny Jacobs will fight on May 4 for three pieces of the middleweight title, according to Alvarez and his promoter Oscar De La Hoya.

Alvarez broke the news Thursday on his twitter account, saying that the fight was official. The site has yet to be determined. However, T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas is believed to be the leading possibility.

In a subsequent news release from DAZN, Alvarez said:

“I will unify my middleweight titles against Daniel Jacobs on one of the two most important dates that belong to me. I have no doubt that I will be victorious and that I’ll be one step away from becoming the undisputed middleweight world champion.”

Jacobs also was quoted in the statement from DAZN, a streaming service which signed Canelo (50-1-2, 34 KOs), the WBC and WBA champion, to a landmark deal after his rematch decision over Gennady Golovkin last September.

“This is the opportunity I have been waiting for,’’ said Jacobs (35-2, 29 KOs), who holds the IBF title. “The opportunity to achieve greatness inside the ring. I have always believed I can beat Canelo, and … I will get my chance to play it out. It’s been nearly four years since Canelo has faced an American challenger. It’s going to be a huge event where I believe I will cement myself as the best middleweight in the division.”

De La Hoya said the Jacobs’ fight is a significant step in Canelo’s relationship with DAZN.

“Canelo Alvarez wants the best fights and the biggest challenges,” De La Hoya said in a statement on news that broke Thursday during the undercard news conference for the Manny Pacquiao-Adrien Broner pay-per-view bout Saturday at the MGM Grand. “That’s what he did as the 154-pound champion, and that’s what he’s doing now as the king of the middleweight division.

“We are also proud to demonstrate to boxing fans that this new partnership with DAZN means that fans will get pay-per-view level fights without the cost of pay-per-view. Golden Boy Promotions is continuing its promise to make the sport as accessible as possible by putting this champion-vs.-champion fight on the platform.”

JACOBS: I WANT CANELO ON CINCO DE MAYO

Daniel Jacobs is gunning for a Middleweight World title unification battle with Canelo Alvarez in 2019 – and the IBF World ruler says their showdown is one of the biggest fights in boxing.

Jacobs will be ringside at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday night as Alvarez looks to become a three-weight World champion when he challenges WBA World Super-Middleweight champion Rocky Fielding – with the Mexican king making his debut on streaming giant DAZN, with the clash also live in the UK on Sky Sports.

Jacobs became a two-time Middleweight king at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in October with victory over Sergiy Derevyanchenko in a fight of the year contender in the Big Apple. Canelo is moving up from 160lbs where he holds the WBA and WBC titles following his win over Gennady Golovkin in their rematch in September – and Jacobs wants Canelo to return to Middleweight and put his titles on the line in a huge Cinco de Mayo showdown.

“I’ll be there front and center on Saturday night – it’s no secret that my focus is on Canelo,” said Jacobs. “There is no other fight in boxing I want right now more than him.

“I did what I had to do and beat Derevyanchenko, a guy nobody wanted to fight and claimed a piece of the Middleweight crown. Now it’s time to unify. I believe that I am the best Middleweight in the world, and he thinks he is, so let’s put it all on the line.

“This is not only the absolute biggest fight to be made in the division, but one of the biggest in all of boxing. As long as he takes care of business on Saturday night I’m ready to go. Let’s give the fans and the sport of boxing what they want and let’s get this done for May 4.”

“I’m rooting for a Rocky Fielding win this Saturday – and when Canelo returns to Middleweight, THE fight for May is the Canelo vs. Jacobs unification,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “After Danny’s great fight with GGG and his IBF victory in October, it’s a fight he wants and one he believes he wins. He will be there on Saturday with among the star-studded crowd watching very closely.”

DANIEL JACOBS VS. SERGIY DEREVYANCHENKO HEATHER HARDY VS. SHELLY VINCENT ALBERTO MACHADO VS. YUANDALE EVANS MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Eddie Hearn: Thanks, Bernie, and thanks, everyone, for joining the call today. Very excited for Saturday, obviously. We have a huge main event at a time when the middleweight division is absolutely electric. Danny Jacobs against Sergiy Derevyanchenko for the IBF Middleweight World title in what is a real 50/50 match up at the Hulu Theater on Saturday night. Another brilliant world title clash between Machado and Evans as well. And of course, the fight that arguably everybody’s talking about right now between Heather Hardy and Shelly Vincent. It sold a huge amount of tickets, had a huge amount of interest, so much so that HBO will be televising this fight live. Of course, if the first fight was anything to go by, it will be a show stealer on Saturday night.

The gentleman that put it all together and my very close friend and partner in crime, Lou DiBella, I’m going to pass over to say a few words.

Lou DiBella: Thank you, Eddie. This Vincent-Hardy title fight, a rematch of Heather’s great fight with Shelly from 2016, which was Ring Magazine’s Female Fight of the Year, it wouldn’t be on this card at all, if not for Eddie Hearn. I want to thank Peter Nelson for making the intelligent and brave decision to put this on live on HBO. It’s one of HBO’s last few shows as a boxing broadcaster. I’m really pleased that they’re making this statement for women’s boxing and allowing these two female warriors to rematch their sensational fight of 2016.

Eddie said, and it’s true, this is a great card, Jacobs-Derevyanchenko’s as good a middleweight title fight as you could make right now, a 50/50 type of fight, and as Eddie pointed out the winner is going to be in the middle of a red-hot division. The Machado-Evans fight is another quality title fight.

This fight is a fight that has captured a lot of people’s imagination because of its great quality the first time. Both of these ladies are inspirational and interesting characters. Heather started out in boxing late, a way of empowering herself; she’s a victim of sexual abuse. She was a single mom. Took up the sport really to really empower herself and has become a two-sport athlete, a Bellator MMA fighter and undefeated female boxer with huge market value in New York and a big star in women’s boxing, and particularly in New York City.

Shelly they’re very different ladies but Shelly’s story is somewhat similar. She’s also a survivor. She’s had a rough life in a lot of ways, but she’s overcome. It’s a huge attraction in New England and her fight with Heather the first time sold most of the tickets when they fought in Coney Island in Brooklyn. I expect to see an awful lot of fans there to support both these ladies.

First, I’m going ask Heather “The Heat” Hardy, if she’ll say a couple of words. Heather, please.

Heather Hardy: Thank you so much, it’s such a nice introduction, Lou, I almost don’t even know what to say. Thank you, Eddie, thank you Lou for giving us a chance on the card, especially bumping us up to the main show on HBO. I really couldn’t think of a better way to win my first world title than at Madison Square Garden on HBO. So, thank you.

Lou DiBella: Thank you. Shelly “Shelito’s Way” Vincent. Go ahead, Shelly.

Shelly Vincent: I just want to thank you Lou, Eddie also, for getting on this card and giving us the opportunity and HBO for stepping up and Peter Nelson for coming through for us for me and Heather. We both work hard and it’s going to be great for me to come to HBO and shut down Heather’s shot at getting that title, because I’m not leaving without that property. I worked way too hard to leave without it.

Lou DiBella: At this point we’re going to open it up for questions. Just one quick point also, there was no love lost between these ladies for a long time. But as the case with fighters in general, when you get in the ring and you give everything you have and you fight a fight, like they fought the first time, this was really like a female Gatti-Ward fight. That’s reason enough-forget about the sensational men’s fights that are on this card-it’s reason enough to get tickets to go to the Hulu Theater this coming Saturday night the 27th to see this fight because their first fight was a Gatti-Ward of women’s boxing.

When two women get in a ring and they fight that kind of fight, it does cause respect to be there between them. It’s good to see, for me, that both these ladies the respect they now have for each other as warriors. They’re going to go in there on Saturday and they’re going to try to kill each other.

We’re going to open it up for questions now.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Just one note for the media on the call, the HBO World Championship Boxing telecast starts at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on Saturday night.

Michael Woods: Hi guys, thanks for taking the time do this. The first question is for Heather, and I’ll also pose it to Shelly. Heather, could you direct, to men and women, people who generally might say I don’t want to watch women fighting, an answer to them and tell them why they should be open-minded and give it a chance?

Heather Hardy: Really, I really don’t think that there are so many people out there who are saying I don’t want to see women fight anymore. I mean, just based on like the feedback that we get from the public from general boxing fans, from social media, I really think those days are over. The few people that you’ve got out here that are saying things like that, there really ain’t nothing you can say to change their mind. Watch the fights, you’ll see.

Michael Woods: Shelly, what about you? Do you come across people who say, ah, I don’t want to watch women fight or like Heather says, is that getting less and less as the years pass?

Shelly Vincent: You really can’t answer that no better than Heather just answered it, pretty much. Everybody gave it a chance. Most people love it now. There are very few that don’t, like she said, there’s nothing that’s going to change their mind. They’re just ignorant.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thanks very much, Mike. Our next question comes from John Gatling. Go ahead, John.

John Gatling: Yes, to follow up on what Woodsy just said there, you all had an epic fight in the summer of 2016, it follows Olympic basketball. They had huge numbers, as it was pointed out no love lost. What do you expect to do different this time? This is for both of you and do you predict a knockout in this fight?

Heather Hardy: I could answer first. I’ve answered this in interviews before. I’m not a knockout puncher; I have four knockouts in my 21 fights, so for me to sit here and say, I’m going to knock this girl out. We’re going to see what happens on Saturday. The beautiful thing of this fight camp as opposed to the last one was, the last one we had we had just under three weeks to prepare. I’ve had eight weeks to get strong, to get tough, to get technical. So, I’m really expecting a different show out there than you all seen the first time. I’m sure the intensity is going to be just the same.

Shelly Vincent: Yes, I agree, too. The last time we only had three weeks. That’s not really much time. I completely had the wrong sparring. The girls were my height or smaller or the guys that I was sparring with this time they were taller, they’re going to move more and just the eight weeks makes the difference. I’m also not going to be leaning on my front leg like I was last time, but I think that was due to lack of training. I think it’s going to be a totally different fight, too, just like Heather said. It’s going to be very exciting and non-stop punching just like the first time.

John Gatling: Can you both just briefly expound on how excited you are to fight on HBO? Heather sent the email to Peter Nelson. We saw it. It made the deal happen and everything. Can you just talk about how excited you are to be on HBO in this transitionary stage right now and for so many people to be able to really see what women’s boxing is all about?

Heather Hardy: It’s really nice to have the opportunity. We were the girls who didn’t get a chance to compete in the Olympics. When we were in the amateurs they didn’t have Olympic boxing, Olympic trials, this is my-I was only in the amateurs for one year, but girls who are our age, we didn’t have those kinds of dreams. So, to be able to have this opportunity on HBO, being the older chick, the OGs, it’s really satisfying.

Shelly Vincent: I think it’s a beautiful feeling. It’s something that me and Heather both, but like all women in general been fighting for, especially the ones that came up before all this time. It’s the only thing that we’ve been reaching for and hopefully keeps more women on TV more. It’s a beautiful feeling, the location, just everything’s perfect. We couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thanks very much for the questions, John, really appreciate it. Our next call comes from San Diego, California, Ms. Gayle Falkenthal. Go ahead, Gayle.

Gayle Falkenthal: Good afternoon, everybody. It’s already been mentioned on this call that you two aren’t exactly best friends. So, what is it between you two that got it this way?

Shelly Vincent: It all started where I was just trying to make a fight. She was in New York. I was over here in New England. It was close; it was easy to make. I thought I could beat her. I thought that she got a bunch of gifts and then it got personal, or things that were said. I guess our fans and everything just kept making it more and more personal. So, one thing just led to another but it all just started, we just trying to make a fight. I did it my way and how I wanted to do it and I guess a lot of people didn’t like that.

Gayle Falkenthal: Is there another side to the story on the other side?

Heather Hardy: No, that pretty much sounds about right.

Gayle Falkenthal: For both of you, would you rather fight somebody that you just can’t stand to see their face across from you versus somebody that you know and have a decent relationship? Does that help a little bit fuel the fire?

Shelly Vincent: They’re all the same, ma’am. We’re going in there for one thing and that’s to win. But when there is a situation like me and Heather, I think it makes it better for the people watching because we’re definitely going to go in there and try to rip each other’s heads off.

Heather Hardy: It’s more exciting for the fans because the fans get to where they don’t like us. The fans want to see us get punched in the face. The fans want to see us hit each other for them, so it becomes more exciting for them. This is a job for us. We go into the gym every single day, spar with our sparring partners who are our best, best friends and we’re trying to kill each other. So, I don’t think necessarily that you have to go in there and hate someone to beat them up.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thanks, very kindly. Our next call comes from Shawn Crouse, go ahead, Shawn.

Shawn Crouse: Hi, thanks for taking my call. I just have a question for both Heather and Shelly. Your last fight was terrific. It was a lot of fun to watch and the fans got a lot out of it. Do you guys feel like you have to live up to the last fight, or is your focus strictly on winning and you’re not going to bother with any unneeded expectations?

Heather Hardy: I don’t think that the first fight came anything outside of natural, so I don’t know that this fight will be anything less, or anything more, because we went in there and we warred, because style’s make fight. That’s our style. I don’t know if there’s any more expectations to put on a show. We’re going to do it again.

Shelly Vincent: I agree, it’s guaranteed fireworks. We’re both going to come forward. I agree. What we did was just natural and it’s going to be the same exact thing this time.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thank you very much, Shawn. Our next question comes from John Cutney Go ahead, John.

John Cutney: Question for Heather to start with. I’ve seen you fight at Barclays Center many times in front of great crowds. You fought high profile MMA cards as well. Does this feel like the pinnacle of your career, the high point up to this point and a related note, and as a result have your preparations been different than some of your other fights?

Heather Hardy: I don’t think it’s the high point of my career. I’ve had so many big ones, like my MMA debut, my pro debut, winning my first WBC title. There were a lot of them where I was losing sleep for. I think the good thing is that I’ve been on the big stage so many times that I don’t feel very overwhelmed by it or outside of myself, like I’m very focused on what I need to do to get the job done.

John Cudney: Great. Shelly, same question-

Lou DiBella: Just to pipe in for one second, though. There is one difference on this fight and that’s both these ladies are getting an opportunity that they’ve been waiting a long time for, and that’s the fight for a world championship. And this fight will be for the WBO Featherweight Championship and that’s something I can you they’ve both been bugging me about for a long time. So, I hope that’s something that is different, ladies.

Shelly Vincent: For me, absolutely, this is the biggest point for me in my career and everything. For one, like Lou said, it’s for the WBO Featherweight Title. I mean, that’s amazing and that’s what we’ve both been asking for so we’re both going to give it our all. It’s just, that’s my only loss to paper. I don’t feel like I lost but that’s my only loss on paper, so of course, do you know what I’m saying, it’s something that I want to fix and I want to show that it’s not-that it wasn’t right. Do you know what I’m saying? It was a controversial loss, and after I beat her that I’m going to automatically fight Heather again because I’m not cool with the tie. Do you know what I’m saying? That’s a fight I immediately want again, and I won’t beat around the bush and make her wait two years and nothing like-we could run it back a week later.

John Cudney: Great. Next question for Heather. I was at the first fight, great fight. It was at the outdoor amphitheater at Coney Island. It was raining horribly that day. I’m just wondering if you think the circumstances of being inside this fight, if that impacted the first fight and if that’s going to make a difference on this fight being at such a different venue.

Heather Hardy: No, I don’t think it matters at all. Your adrenaline is so high before you get into the ring. I don’t think it ever really matters where the ring is, whether it’s outside, inside, on the beach, in the pool. It really doesn’t make a difference; your adrenaline is so high. And, we’re trained as professional fighters that your focus is on the person in front of you, don’t let anything outside really get inside your head.

John Cudney: Thanks. Shelly, same question.

Shelly Vincent: Yes, same thing. I think it’s all heart, blood and guts when you go in there so it doesn’t really matter where you are. It’s one goal and you’re taught to fight through anything. So, it’s not going to make any difference.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thanks very much, John. Our next question comes from Shalom Jones. Go ahead, Shalom.

Shalom Jones: Thank you. This is Shalom Jones with [indiscernible] Media. My question is to both Shelly and Heather. The last fight was epic on the [indiscernible] undercard at Brooklyn. Do you feel any added pressure being that this fight is on HBO and it could possibly be one of the last televised HBO fights for you guys to live up to an action-packed fight and HBO’s televised session with a bang?

Heather Hardy: I mean, like I just tried to say to the last guy, every win is a win. There’s no added pressure. There’s nothing extra exciting. In boxing, every time you go into the ring, you have to come out the winner. So, I don’t know necessarily that I feel so much added pressure because it’s on HBO or because it’s for a world title or because we’re been fighting so hard for this fight. I was training to win this fight no matter where it was, when it was, what it was for, whether it was on TV or not. That’s like, added pressure, not so much but yes, the pressure to win is always there.

Shelly Vincent: No added pressure, just like we said in the other one. It’s the same. We’re just going out there for one purpose and one cause and we worked hard. So, we know the first fight was amazing, and it was great on both sides. So, it’s going to be the same and we know that. So, it’s no added pressure; we’re just going to go out there and work and give it our all.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thanks very much, Shalom. Our next question comes from Jake Donovan. Go ahead, Jake.

Jake Donovan:
Thanks, appreciate it. I wanted to ask both of you, most of my questions have been already answered. I did want to ask both of you, do you feel like-I know women’s boxing is hitting its peak finally-but do you feel like both of you-are you able to just be boxers? Or, do you feel like you still have to stand for something more than just boxing? It always seems like women’s boxing are forced to stand for some sort of cause. Shelly, I just want to know, do you finally feel like women’s boxing as a whole is gaining respect? Do you like that you can just identify yourself as a boxer or do you feel like you always have to stand for something more than just the sport?

Shelly Vincent: It’s definitely reaching where it needs to be and it’s elevating. It is for sure but it always does feel like, yes, we are fighting a fight in the background and everything and we’re always trying to prove that we belong there and that we do deserve to be in the positions that we are and for equality pay and equality in everything. But, it’s definitely reaching and elevating and we’re getting opportunities now and I think that the big pay days and the big-everything is coming but it’s going to be after we’re gone. But, we had a part of it. But, yes, it’s always a constant fight; that’s the way I feel. But, we’re definitely getting places and it’s getting there.

Jake Donovan: Cool. Thank you, Shelly. Heather, same question.

Heather Hardy: Yes, I mean, women’s boxing is definitely places. The girls in the Olympics, I mean that wasn’t there prior to 2012, so you have these young girls coming up who have things to hope for, dreams to hope for, unlike when girls our age were younger and it was like, what are you going to do with it. So, I think that’s a big thing.

Like, you had asked do we still feel like we have to refer to ourselves as female boxers, none of us girls ever refer to us that way. Everyone else does. We’re just boxers; we’re fighters. We’re athletes. Everyone else refers to us as female boxers and women boxers. I mean, once everybody else stops calling us that, then I think that’s when the question goes away.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thank you, Jake. Thanks very much for the questions. Our next question comes from Jeremy Herriges from fansided.com. Go ahead, Jeremy.

Jeremy Herriges: Hi, ladies. This question goes out to both Heather and Shelly. I know going off of the last question, obviously, again, breaking down the distinction between female and male boxers it’s been an evolution and it’s getting to that point where there are no distinctions. But, what are some of the barriers that you still see women boxers having to face that maybe a male boxer doesn’t have to?

Shelly Vincent: Everything, definitely not the equal pay. We definitely have to beg and Heather had to write the guy, to Peter, to get the opportunity to fight on TV. It’s always a fight for us. It’s not something that we’re just given the opportunity like the men.

Heather Hardy: I would also say you still have only three weight classes of Olympics, girls going to the Olympics. And then that limits the opportunity with the bigger promoters and on the bigger networks. So, it’s like, we’re doing better but there’s still a ways to go.

Jeremy Herriges: What do you feel, Heather, would take as the catalyst to really create major change in the way that women are treated in the sport of boxing?

Heather Hardy: I think that it’s like all the girls who have a microphone have to shout as loud as they can, tell everybody we’re here, this is happening. I remember when I first turned pro, people were like, “Oh my God, they have girl boxers, too?” This was like, seven years ago people didn’t even know that, that females were boxing and that women were professional fighters and were doing it as their job and stuff. It’s everybody’s responsibility, the fighters, the promoter, the managers to just get the word out there.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thanks very much, Jeremy. Our next question comes from Jay Kemp. Go ahead, Jay.

Jay Kemp: Hi, girls. Obviously, the sport is growing. We’re hitting more and more TV stations, premium, free, you guys have been on Premier Boxing Champions. How is this affecting you out in the personal day life? Are people starting to recognize you based on all of this popularity?

Heather Hardy: Not really. Boxing isn’t the most popular sport. It’s not like baseball where you play 162 games a year and everyone sees your face every day. Everyone in my neighborhood knows me; everyone around knows me. People knew me more of doing the MMA fights. I don’t know that necessarily just fighting on TV for boxing didn’t happen yet.

Shelly Vincent: I think the same, too. I’m sorry, too. I’m trying to pack my stuff and go and answer the questions because I have to go one of my medicals. But, I think the same people know us. I think that the opportunity with us being on TV is going to make more people notice us and people that didn’t see us, see women’s boxing before so I think that’s going to open up doors for us to get more well-known.

Jay Kemp: As always, you guys are always putting on a show, in the ring, outside the ring. I can’t wait for this Saturday and take care of business, both of you.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Our next question comes from Daniel Yanofsky. Go ahead, Daniel.

Daniel Yanofsky: Hi, guys. This is Dan Yanofsky from Double G Sports. Heather, we recently spoke back in 2017 about women’s opportunities in boxing. Since then, you’ve done MMA, you’ve done both boxing, and over the past few weeks we’ve seen Mikaela Mayer and Katie Taylor both televised boxing and seeing them fight to the best of their ability. How does it feel to continue the momentum of women’s boxing to the point where, like we said before, we don’t want to feel it’s called or recognized as women’s boxing, and just call it boxing?

Heather Hardy: It’s really an honor to be able to be carrying the torch along with girls like that, Olympic-level athletes. So, to be able to be mentioned along with them, it’s really an honor. It’s what I’ve been fighting. It’s what Shelly and I have been fighting our whole career for, the opportunities and the recognition, knowing that we missed out on those Olympic years. It will give hope to maybe some of our peers who didn’t get, who kind of aged out of the Olympic trials and so forth.

Daniel Yanofsky: My next question is for Shelly. When you prepare for a fight like this, knowing your opponent, does it feel like you need to one-up yourself for the next fight or is there no added pressure to this?

Shelly Vincent: I think definitely I got to up myself. It’s a rematch. It’s a rematch that I haven’t lost on paper. And, yes, I got to up everything up. I work extra hard for this and everything, so yes.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thanks so much, Daniel. Heather and Shelly, we’d like you to thank you both very much for taking the time here.

We’d like to reintroduce Eddie Hearn from Matchroom Boxing USA to introduce his charge Daniel Jacobs. Go ahead, Eddie.

Eddie Hearn: Thank you to both ladies. That was a fantastic conference call there. It went very well for both and I’m looking forward to that fight on Saturday.

This main event is an absolute cracker, I think. A lot of people in the sport of boxing are looking forward to this fight, Daniel Jacobs against Sergiy Derevyanchenko, for the IBF Middleweight Championship of the World. Of course, right now I think the middleweight division is the key division in boxing. You’ve seen that great two fights between Canelo and GGG, and also Demetrius Andrade becoming WBO World Champion on Saturday. And I think the winner of this fight is particularly primed to fight Canelo next May, as well. So, for Danny Jacobs coming off two good wins against Sulecki and Arias, ready for this challenge. This is the big challenge for him. It’s a chance for him to become IBF World Champion.

Right now, I’m going to pass over to the former WBA Middleweight Champion of the World, “The Miracle Man” Daniel Jacobs.

Daniel Jacobs: Thanks, Eddie, I appreciate that. How’s everyone doing? It’s a great opportunity for me to finally be-I just got back from New York last night so I’m just getting back. Glad I made it. It feels good to be home. I’m looking forward to this wonderful opportunity that I have to win the IBF Championship of the World, a respected belt that I’m going to work my butt for; I have worked my butt off for.

I’m just looking for Saturday night. I’m really, really anxious and really, really excited. I just can’t wait. It’s going to be a great opportunity for me, and it’s against a really, really, truly worth opponent, an opponent that the fans respect and that it’s going to bring the best out of me. So, Saturday night, guys, I just hope everyone can make it. I hope everyone can tune in, and you’re not going to definitely want to miss this fight.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Our first call comes from Michael Woods from Brooklyn, New York. Go ahead, Michael.

Michael Woods: Hi, Danny. This is Mike Woods on the line. My question is, ripping off that promo show that I saw that said you and Sergiy sparred 300+ rounds, I’m wondering if you could characterize that. Did you feel that you had the upper hand and possibly what are some of the things you learned from sparring him so much?

Daniel Jacobs: Hey, Mike, how you doing? But, to answer your question, I mean, it was very intense sparring matches. You’re dealing with a guy who had over 400+ amateur fights, a guy who’s very durable, very tough. But, you also have to realize that this is a world championship and regardless as to how those sparring sessions went, this is for both of our dreams that we’re trying to accomplish. And, nothing really stands in the way of that. This is the reason why this fight is happening because if it was an ideal situation for my trainers, or for my trainer, he would have us both be world champions in the same division and never fight each other. But, that’s impossible because one day I want to be the undisputed middleweight champion. So, there is no one standing in the way of my dreams.

Those sparring sessions were competitive and this is why I know that this fight will be even more competitive because a sparring session is totally different from a professional boxing match. There’s more dangers, there’s more things to be aware of, and there’s not an IBF title on the line when you’re in there sparring with head gear and 16-ounce gloves on, too.

So, it just makes the stakes higher and it just makes for an even better fight. This is why I’m really, really happy that I have this opportunity with such a talented guy.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Mike, thanks very much. Our next question comes from Gayle Falkenthal. Go ahead, Gayle.

Gayle Falkenthal: Good afternoon. Daniel, a lot of things are happening in the middleweight division. It seems like a lot of cards are shuffling. We had a little bit of an upset over the weekend. We have Saunders who knows where. Where do you see yourself? Is this a time for you to be able to take advantage of this?

Daniel Jacobs: Yeah, I think it’s a great time to just be a middleweight in general. I think it’s a great time to have an opportunity for a middleweight championship. This is why I was training so hard in my training camp and I prepared myself 100%. And, I think when I’m in there with really good opposition that my skill, my awareness, and everything goes up. They say sometimes when you fight lower to who you are sometimes you might fall into a trap and fight at the level of your opposition. But this one is a great opponent for me and I’m looking forward to giving the fans a good fight.

But, not only is it going to be a good fight but there’s so much at stake for a championship and then for the near future. So, for all of this in the back of my mind, it’s truly allowed me to push myself in training camp, allowed me to get into a mental place where I’m going to be ready for any and everything. So, I’m grateful for all the opportunities that come my way.

Like I said, this opportunity was never supposed to present itself. I never was supposed to have this second chance. So, the fact that I even have a chance to fight for a belt, I’m just so grateful for it and to be in one of the hottest divisions, I truly, truly look forward to taking advantage of all of these things.

Gayle Falkenthal: Do you think the timing is perfect? I mean, here you are, it’s a good-it seems like the perfect time for you to make a statement, to remind everybody, hey, I’m still over here, guys.

Daniel Jacobs: Well, I never felt like I got lost in the sauce, but yes, it is a time to get a middleweight belt and to campaign for some of these bigger and better fights.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thanks very much, Gayle. Our next question comes from Eddie Goldman. Go ahead, Eddie.

Eddie Goldman: Hi, thank you very much. Danny, I have a question about this particular fight. Other than some of the obvious things like height and reach, what do you see as your advantages in this fight over Derevyanchenko?

Daniel Jacobs: I feel like I’m the strongest middleweight that he had stepped in the ring professionally with. The height and the reach are some key things, especially when I set my mind to be being a boxer I can do that very well. But, also, if I want to come forward or be a counter puncher or even just want to outright brawl, I do believe that I have the power to back it up. So, there’s a lot of dangers inside this fight when it comes to both of us. But for me, I truly feel like I have the best advantages.

Eddie Goldman: What also about the issue of professional experience and the level of opponents that you’ve had as a pro? How would you rate that?

Daniel Jacobs:Once you put on ten-ounce gloves and you actually go in there and compete with the best, all of these dangers that you have inside the ring, that’s when you’ll truly know. So, I feel like that I have the advantages when it comes to the mental aspect of the experience of knowing I can go full 12 solid rounds with the best of them and compete at an all-time high level. I mean, I know that. I have it in my bank, I have it in the gas tank already.

A guy that’s inexperienced with only 12 fights, I would presume that it would be a second guess on his behalf. So, only time will tell but for me, I’m just 100% physically and mentally ready.

Eddie Goldman: Would you like to make a prediction for the fight?

Daniel Jacobs: No. I do see my hand being raised, but how I get the victory I have no idea, but I’m willing to get it any way I can.

Eddie Goldman: Question for both of you. If you remember, Lou was involved in this back in the day in 2001 with the World Championship Middleweight Series. We have a situation today which everybody understands you have a lot of really excellent fighters and you don’t have a unified, undisputed champion. Do you think the conditions exist for another middleweight tournament with so many of these top middleweights that we have out there today?

Eddie Hearn: Yeah [overlapping voices]. Okay, thanks, Lou. From my side, I think that you’re going to see a lot of these big unification fights. Danny’s made no secret of the-his controversial loss to Gennady Golovkin that he wants to fight the winner of Canelo against Golovkin. Obviously, Canelo won that fight and although Danny’s eyes are on Saturday, obviously, we’ll particularly want the Canelo fight if he’s successful and we believe he will be on Saturday.

So, you’ve got another champion in Demetrius Andrade who is certainly willing to have unification bout to step up]. So, I think now with the championships spreading out over to three champions, and Canelo’s 11 fight deal, he’s going to be needing many, many opponents and certainly the winner of Saturday night is in prime position to fight Canelo probably on Cinco de Mayo.

I think all the guys who are champions now are not guys that are going to want trough [ph] defenses or a number of voluntary defenses once they get their belt. They’re all at a stage where they’re ready for big fights. Danny’s a former champion. Andrade is now three-time world champion. Canelo is obviously open to fight anyone. So, I think the division is opening up nicely to see all the big unification bouts].

Eddie Goldman: Lou, do you think it could be done having gone through that back in 2001?

Lou DiBella: I think, look, boxing is a business and right now the middleweight division when you get past the heavyweights, the middleweight division is a money division and there’s a lot of big fights to be made. And I think the fact that those fights are so interesting to boxing fans, the fact that you’re asking this question, I think that there’s a very meaningful shot that you’re going to just see big middleweight fight after big middleweight fight.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thanks very much, Eddie. Our next question comes from Jeremy Herriges with fansided.com. Go ahead, Jeremy.

Jeremy Herriges: Hi, Danny. How weird will it be seeing Gary Stark in the opposite corner and how do you keep emotions out of it?

Daniel Jacobs: Lou just said it. This is a business and that’s how we’re both taking it. So, it’s really no different from me seeing Gary on the opposite side of the ring when we’re sparring and Gary telling him how to get the best of me in sparring. I look at it as the same but the stakes are just higher. It’s really not a personal thing for me, even though I’ve known Gary for longer and he once worked my corner. To me it’s more so it’s just about who he’s doing the best for his fighter. So, I have nothing but respect and I can’t do anything but respect the idea of it. My thing is this, there’s no one that’s going to get in the way of me reaching my goals. And, I see the same for those guys.

So, it’s really not awkward but if I could have it a different way, I mean, obviously I would, but there’s truly no other way around it. And I knew that this would be an opportunity-well not an opportunity, I know this could potentially be a fight once Sergiy Derevyanchenko came on the table. I knew he was another middleweight guy that can potentially reach the top that I may have to fight one day.

I don’t believe in sharing belts. I want to be the undisputed. The idea was always in the back of my mind. But, I have the upmost respect for Gary. I have the upmost respect for Sergiy. And, I think it’s going to go for a more interesting and better fight when we’ve known each other for so long and there’s history with us. It’s just a good time. The fans are going to be the ones who are going to benefit of it the most.

Jeremy Herriges: Again, talking about how you are peers and are kind of so close here with their personnel and guys that you work with, do you have any sort of personal relationship with Sergiy?

Daniel Jacobs: There’s no personal relationship. I mean I don’t dislike the guy. I think he’s a really phenomenal, humble gentleman. But, he doesn’t know English so it’s really hard for us to have any relationship outside of the gym or saying hello and goodbye. I haven’t heard him say five English words. So, it’s really like, it’s kind of hard to have a real relationship with somebody that can’t speak English. But, I do know that he’s a very nice guy. I do know that he’s always respectful. He’s very humble. I know these things.

But none of that stuff matters when so much is at stake. You got to understand. When you’ve been fighting all your life and you get this close to your goal, it really didn’t matter who is in there. It could have been Andre Rozier at the opposite side of the ring.

Jeremy Herriges: Final question. You talked about Sergiy’s extensive amateur career, but he only has 12 fights as a professional. From your point of view, do you think that’s a mistake that he’s maybe not quite ready for you yet?

Daniel Jacobs: Only time will tell, but I do feel like I do have a lot of the experience, or I have more experience than he does in the professional world. He’s fundamentally sound. He has that background which gives him the skill and the mindset of knowing what to do inside that ring. But actually, going inside that ring and doing it and putting in the work and going 12 rounds multiple times and having all of these different fights, I mean, you learn, you’re learning how to be a true professional fighter because there’s really not a lot of things used in amateur fighting.

There’s not a lot of things to look out for in amateur boxing. Once the head gear comes off, once the 10 ounce gloves come on and you’re fighting men and you’re doing all these different things, that’s where the experience comes. So, I definitely have the edge on experience but you really won’t know until you get inside that ring. I mean, this guy is a very talented guy so I think he’s going to bring the best out of me and it’s really going to be a good fight.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Okay. We’ll take one final call for Daniel from Shalom Jones. Go ahead, Shalom.

Shalom Jones: Yes. This is Shalom Jones with Jackal Fitness]. Danny, you being a local Brownsville guy, could you just describe the feeling of having the ability to bring the title back for the second time to your city, and fighting in front of so many friends, and family members and people that watched you come up through the amateur ranks?

Daniel Jacobs: Thank you, brother, for that question. I think it’s a true blessing and great opportunity for me to represent, not only just New York boxing, but coming from Brownsville where boxing has been the essence of the neighborhood. We’ve had heroes, obviously, like Mike and Shannon and Zab and all these different guys that I grew up watching. Having that same opportunity to fight for a world championship and bring the belt, not just back to Brooklyn, but back to Brownsville, l mean, that’s significant and I don’t take that lightly. But, all of these things I keep in the back of my mind when I’m training.

Then, I’ve just recently seen that there’s a billboard in Brownsville of the fight, which is a really, really big accomplishment. I mean, I was more excited about that billboard being in Brownsville than I was of a billboard being in Times Square. That just goes to show you how meaningful it is to our culture, how meaningful it is to Brownsville in bringing this belt back because the belt represents hope and God-willing I get this victory, we’re going to have a parade in Brownsville.

We’re going to make sure that these people see it because it ain’t just about me, but it’s about all the people that not only believed in me, but all of the people that come from the same struggle that I came from, that had a dream, that’s willing to do anything to accomplish it.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Danny, thanks very much. We’re going to let you get back to your training. If you have any closing comments, go ahead, please.

Daniel Jacobs: Well, I’m looking forward to this fight. I truly, truly am. I know it’s going to be one heck of a fight for even how long it does last. I mean, the fans are going to get their moneys’ worth. You guys are not going to want to miss this. I’m going to put it all on the line come Saturday and I’m looking forward to a really competitive fight. If you guys can make it, make it. There are still tickets on sale but if you can’t, make sure you tune into HBO and support this fight because this is one of the best middleweight fights that could be made at this time.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thanks very much, Daniel. We’ll see you this week in New York City for the fight week media events.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Next up, we’ll have Sergiy Derevyanchenko on the line for the Q&A. Lou, if you want to go ahead and introduce Sergiy?

Lou DiBella: Yes, I just want to start by saying I’ve known Danny since he was a teenager and there are very few guys in this sport who are better athletes or better people or more of a role model than Daniel Jacobs. His Miracle Man nickname is deserved. Very few people expected him to be here at this point and frankly, he’s defeated cancer. He’s not a guy that’s intimidated or scared by any fighter and I have nothing but admiration for Danny.

But, on this Saturday night, October 27th, I think he has his hands full and I think it’s the second most accomplished guy he’s ever fought, and I know that’s saying a lot because Danny’s fought some great fighters, including Gennady Golovkin. People have to remember, even though Sergiy Derevyanchenko is a very difficult name to spell, and not a particularly well-known guy who hasn’t had as much television as he deserves, he had 390 amateur wins against only 20 losses, the most decorated amateur middleweight of the last generation along with Gennady Golovkin.

This is a superbly talented guy who did fight professionally in the World Series of Boxing after his real amateur career. He’s had 12 fights because frankly, not speaking English, not being from the states and not having a household name, he’s an easy guy to avoid. He had to earn this spot as this number one contender and earn this opportunity to fight for the IBF belt. Some of that earning process involved, literally, sitting and waiting and waiting out the politics of this sport.

On Saturday night, on the 27th, he’s finally getting this opportunity he’s waited so long for, and I think Danny said that he thought he had an advantage in professional experience. I think an advantage that Sergiy has on Saturday night is hunger. He literally is hungry. He has a family; he has kids.

Despite his hard work, and mine and his management, he hasn’t made the money yet that he deserves and the only way that’s going to happen for him is by beating Daniel Jacobs on Saturday night. I have a feeling, on Saturday night, when either the ten count is called on a fighter or the 12th round is over, everybody is going to know who Sergiy Derevyanchenko is.

Sergiy, can you say a few words?

Vladimir (translating for Sergiy Derevyanchenko): He just wants to say hello to everyone that’s out there on the phone and line and thank you, everyone, for participating on the call.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thanks very much, Sergiy. Thanks very much, Vladimir. Our first question comes from Mike Woods. Go ahead, Mike.

Michael Woods: Hi, Sergiy. My question for you is what did you learn from those 300+ rounds of sparring Daniel Jacobs?

Vladimir (translating for Sergiy Derevyanchenko): The sparring was very good. We helped each other out. It was a lot of technical work that we both learned from each other and at the end of the day, it was just a lot of good work.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thanks, Mike. Our next question comes from Jake Donovan. Go ahead, Jake.

Jake Donovan: Yes. Sergiy, my question for you, I know you haven’t been the most active boxer since entering the pro ranks. Do you feel like that’s more to your benefit? I know more fighters prefer to fight more per year. You’ve only fought like once or twice a year for the past few years. Is that actually by design?

Lou DiBella: Jake, let me jump in for one second. No, that wasn’t by design. He would have preferred to have fought more often. We had to go through the politics of boxing to get him the opportunity to fight against Tureano Johnson for a mandatory position. Then, when you’re sitting in the mandatory position, you have to be available, and available means inactive until that opportunity presents itself.

Because if you schedule a fight, particularly if you’re a guy like Sergiy, who’s an excellent fighter, a dangerous fighter, and a guy who’s capable of beating anybody, you can’t risk missing your opportunity. I know he would have preferred to fight more often, I’m sure he’s going to tell you that right now, and he can. Frankly, we should have been able to keep him busier and some of that’s on me, but it’s really on the television’s willingness to buy a guy that doesn’t have big name recognition and the ability to get optional opponents who will fight a monster like Sergiy when they don’t have to.

I’ll let him take it from there, but I know he wanted to fight more often, and so the last couple of years were a little bit limited in terms of his availability to fight by his position waiting for his shot to fight for the mandatory, and then waiting as the mandatory.

Vladimir (translating for Sergiy Derevyanchenko): He said, of course, I wanted more fights, and like Lou said, it’s not always in my control but at the end of the day, I’ve been training. I’m always training, I’m always active so I don’t have to work as hard as maybe other people do to get in shape. Then, for this particular camp, it was a great camp. We had great sparring partners that we brought in and all I can say is that I’m ready.

Jake Donovan: Alright. I just have one more question. Danny was speaking that when Sergiy first came to the camp that he always viewed him as someone that could potentially be in this position, to where, even though they’re sparring partners, they would have to fight for the title. Did Sergiy always kind of get that sense as well, the moment he ended up at this camp?

Vladimir (translating for Sergiy Derevyanchenko): Yes, I always thought about it. I mean, when we were working together in the gym and training, I always thought about what it would be like if we were fighting together, but I think about that with other folks so now the time has come and its just reality.

Jake Donovan: Okay, great. Thanks. Then, Lou, I actually have one more question for you. I know you’ve seen around how hard it’s always been to get Sergiy a fight in the past. Should he win on Saturday, do you feel like now, with everything going on in the middleweight division that actually becomes a little bit easier for you, being the relationships, he’s been able to build, especially with his own now on the scene?

Lou DiBella: Yes, there’s no question. I mean, first of all, there are more players now in the middleweight division. There’s more money in the middleweight division and there’s two of boxing’s biggest stars in the middleweight division, including its biggest megastar-Canelo.

The real advantage of this, people are getting a great opportunity, fans, to come out to a smaller venue at Hulu Theater where there isn’t a bad seat and see really two elite guys compete in what is a real outcome and doubt kind of 50/50 fight. If Sergiy beats Danny Jacobs, who’s one of the biggest names in boxing, it’s going to be in sensational fashion because it’s going to be a sensational fight.

This is a competitive fight and it’s not going to be a chess match, it’s not going to be a track meet, it’s going to be a fight. I believe that Sergiy Derevyanchenko is going to emerge from Saturday night as a star and I think that that’s been his destiny for a long time. It’s coming against someone he knows very well, but as Danny pointed out earlier, there’s a big difference between sparring and getting in there when everything is on the line.

I think that the difference in this fight is going to be what it means to each guy. Danny has already-he’s been able to achieve a lot. I know he wants to be unified champion, but Danny doesn’t have to worry, at the moment, about feeding his family and being able to do the things that he’s worked all his life for. He’s already reaped some of those rewards. Sergiy hasn’t and I think on Saturday night you’re going to see the best of Sergiy Derevyanchenko. I think the winner of that fight is going to make a lot of money.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thank you. Our next question comes from Kenneth Bouhairie. Go ahead, Kenneth.

Kenneth Bouhairie: Yes, hi, Sergiy. With all the middleweight bouts that have occurred in recent weeks and talk of getting Danny Jacobs in the mix, do you feel that you’re being overlooked at all?

Vladimir (translating for Sergiy Derevyanchenko): He said, well, if they are overlooking me or if they’re not talking about me then maybe they don’t have anything to talk about me about. So, after this fight, when I show what I am, then all the boxing fans and people who follow the sport will have something to talk about and they will appreciate my technical prowess and they will appreciate what I bring to the sport.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thank you, Kenneth. Our next question comes from Eddie Goldman for Sergiy. Go ahead, Eddie.

Eddie Goldman: Thank you very much. Hi, Sergiy. I have question about what you think your advantages are in this fight, particularly since Danny has more pro fights, you’ve probably had more amateur fights. But, what do you think your advantages are in this fight coming up Saturday?

Vladimir: Well, it has to be amateur background. I have a huge amateur background. His is not anything close to mine, so that would be the advantage.

Eddie Goldman: You’ve also won your last several fights by knockout. Is there going to be any pressure on you to go for the knockout or do you just take it if comes and prepare to fight 12 rounds if you have to?

Vladimir (translating for Sergiy Derevyanchenko): If it has to go the distance, I’m ready because I’ve trained for it. But, of course, I would love to try to end the fight sooner with an exclamation point, like I would always try to do, more so that the fans can have the excitement and give the fans what it is that they want.

He said he never actually goes in and searches for the knockout. What happens is he’s trained his whole life to throw combinations the way he throws them and it just becomes automatic at some point. And when the punches start throwing and those combinations land, the knockouts happen.

Eddie Goldman: And lastly, Sergiy, would you like to make a prediction for the fight?

Vladimir (translating for Sergiy Derevyanchenko): I don’t like to give predictions on fights. All I could tell you is that I trained very hard; it was a very hard camp. I take this very serious. This is the most serious thing that I’ve been involved with and I am more than ready for the opportunity.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thanks very much, Eddie. We’re going to take one more question for Sergiy so he can get back to training. This is from Terrell Van from Philadelphia. Go ahead, Terrell.

Terrell Van: Yeah, how are you doing? I just have one question for Sergiy. If you were to win on Saturday, you would likely inherit the title of being the Bogeyman. Can you give a statement to the 130-pound division just in case any politics might arise in regards to you getting fights if you win or the big fights?

Vladimir (translating for Sergiy Derevyanchenko): Well, I don’t think anyone will be afraid of me because at the end of the day, if I have the belt, that opens up all the opportunities for me and for other fighters. And, real fighters who want to be champions should fight guys that have the belts. And if I have a belt and all it should do is make people excited and hungry to challenge me the same way that I feel right now.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thanks, Terrell. Vladimir, if you could ask Sergiy for any closing comments and we’ll let him get back to training.

Vladimir (translating for Sergiy Derevyanchenko): I just want to say thank you to first all the boxing fans out there that have been supporting me and that have been giving me messages. I really appreciate it. Of course I also want to thank Lou DiBella and I want to thank all the organizers and all the promoters that have helped me and that have put these shows on that have given me the opportunity and just want to thank everyone for being on the call.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thank you, Sergiy. Thank you, Vladimir. We now move to the co-feature fight on Saturday night. We have on the line Alberto Machado, the champion who is defending his title against Yuandale Evans. He will be assisted here by his interpreter, Bryan Perez from Cotto Promotions.

Bryan, if you could ask Alberto to make an opening comment please? Bryan, are you there? Operator?

Bryan Perez: And joining the call from Miguel Cotto Promotions, we would like to introduce WBA Super Featherweight Champion of the World, the undefeated Alberto Josue Machado.

Bryan Perez (translating for Alberto Machado): I’m very happy. Thank you, everyone, for being here with me on the call. I’m very excited to be back performing in New York for my second title defense.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Our first question comes from Carlos Toro from Puerto Rico. Go ahead, Carlos.

Carlos Toro: Thank you and thank you, Alberto, for taking time to speak with us. First of all, you are in an incredibly deep division with the likes of Tevin Farmer, Gervonta Davis, Miguel Berchelt, and so many others. If you emerge victorious, would you like to face off against one of those champions? I know there was talk of potentially Francisco Vargas wanting to fight you. Is that also another fight that you want to face?

Bryan Perez (translating for Alberto Machado): I’m totally focused and concentrated on Yuandale Evans on my next fight this upcoming Saturday. But, of course I’m very, very open and I would love to face the big names of the 130 division, so if that pops up, any opportunity we’ll grab it on 2019. But, I’m focused on giving all my fans, all the Puerto Rico fans a big win this Saturday night.

Carlos Toro: Alberto, you’ve sparred-you’re going to be fighting at Madison Square Garden. Obviously Miguel Cotto and many other great Puerto Rican champions have fought there. How does it feel to be a part of that legacy, of Puerto Rican fighters competing at Madison Square Garden?

Bryan Perez (translating for Alberto Machado): For me, it’s a dream come true fighting at the Garden like the greatest, Miguel Cotto, Felix Trinidad, Hector Camacho. For me, it’s an honor to be there and also fighting on HBO. I became a champion on the network, and now I’m just fighting back and defending my title on HBO and at the Garden will be great. It’s a dream come true. Like the other big names, as I mentioned [indiscernible] Cotto and Hector Camacho did, so I want my name to be there. So, it’s a pleasure for me and give [indiscernible] to all the Puerto Rican fans around the world.

Carlos Toro: Lastly, you won the title with a knockout and then in your first title defense you showed that you can sustain a dominant performance throughout all 12 rounds. Do you predict that this will go the distance or do you believe that you’re going to win by knockout?

Bryan Perez (translating for Alberto Machado): All my team and Miguel Cotto Promotions, we all know that we have power in both hands. But, we’re not pursuing the knockout. We’ll work to the distance and if it happens, it happens. But, you want to have a solid win on Saturday night for all my fans and all of Puerto Rico as a mecca of boxing, so that’s what I’m concentrating on.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thanks very much, Carlos. Our next call comes Terrell Van, Philadelphia. Go ahead, Terrell.

Terrell Van: A question for Machado, how do you feel about the WBA making Gervonta Davis the super champion and you the world champion, even though you’ve been champion longer?

Bryan Perez (translating for Alberto Machado): Yes, I just want to congratulate Gervonta because he deserves it. But, everyone knows in boxing that I am the real-world champion at the WBA Super Featherweight Division. I dethroned the champion in that moment that was Jezreel Corrales a year ago, and everyone knows all the sacrifices that I have been through. So, what happened with the WBA they will know, but I know, and everyone knows that I am the true world champion.

Terrell Van: One more question, it’s safe to assume that possibly after this fight, if you are victorious, that you can possibly be heading over to the streaming at Da Zone. Tevin Farmer just had a win. He’s also in the 130 pound division IBF champion. Is that a fight that interests you in 2019?

Bryan Perez (translating for Alberto Machado): I’m very happy with my promotional company. I’ve been with them for five, six years with Miguel Cotto Promotions and now working together with Golden Boy. So, whatever my company decides I will follow. My job is to train hard, get concentrated and I’m working with Freddie Roach in LA; I feel more concentrated. The best business and the best opportunity for everybody we’ll grab. So, that’s all I have to say.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Terrell, thank you very much. Bryan, if you could ask Alberto for some closing comments and what the fans in New York City can expect to see?

Bryan Perez (translating for Alberto Machado): I just want to say that I’m very happy with this opportunity. I just can’t wait to fight on Saturday night. I just want to add that, as I said, one of the best camps in my 20 fights as a pro, and I’m very excited to be back in the ring on HBO this Saturday night. And so, I thank all the people involved, HBO, Peter Nelson, Golden Boy and Miguel Cotto Promotions for this great opportunity, so I can’t wait to see you all on Saturday night at the Garden.

Bernie Bahrmasel: Alberto, thanks very much. Bryan, thanks so much for interpreting. Thanks very much to the national media for joining us today. Again, doors open at the Hulu Theater at 6 p.m. at Madison Square Garden this Saturday night. HBO World Championship Boxing starts at 10 p.m. Eastern, Pacific time also. Thank you very much for joining us. This concludes this call.

Jacobs: I have the mental edge at the Garden

Daniel Jacobs believe his experience in World title action gives him the mental edge over Sergiy Derevyanchenko as they clash for the vacant IBF Middleweight crown at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday night, live on HBO.

Jacobs (34-2 29KOs) can become a two-time World ruler at Middleweight with victory over the Ukranian, but with the pair knowing each other inside out having trained alongside one another for years, Jacobs knows that this could be an intense battle with fine margins.

The ‘Miracle Man’ enters his eighth World title contest against ‘The Technician’ who laces them up in his first bout for an elite belt after reaching 12-0 (10 KOs). The Brooklyn favorite has 44 rounds of action in World title fights, compared to the total of 57 rounds as a pro that amateur standout Derevyanchenko has had. Jacobs believes that experience in his return to Madison Square Garden – where he was edged out by Gennady Golovkin in a unification fight in – will see him regain World champion status.

“I feel like I’m the strongest Middleweight that he has stepped in the ring with professionally,” said Jacobs. “The height and the reach are some key things, especially when I set my mind to be being a boxer, I can do that very well.

“But if I want to come forward or be a counter puncher or even just want to outright brawl, I do believe that I have the power to back it up. So, there’s a lot of dangers inside this fight when it comes to both of us. But for me, I truly feel like I have the best advantages.

“Once you put on ten ounce gloves and you actually go in there and compete with the best, all of these dangers that you have inside the ring, that’s when you’ll truly know. So, I feel like that I have the advantages when it comes to the mental aspect of the experience of knowing I can go full 12 solid rounds with the best of them and compete at an all-time high level. I mean, I know that. I have it in my bank, I have it in the gas tank already.

“A guy that’s inexperienced with only 12 fights, I would presume that it would be a second guess on his behalf. So, only time will tell but for me, I’m just 100 per cent physically and mentally ready. I do see my hand being raised, but how I get the victory I have no idea, but I’m willing to get it any way I can.”

Jacobs’ clash with Derevyanchenko is part of a stunning triple-header of World title action live on HBO, with unbeaten WBA Super-Featherweight champion Alberto Machado defends his title against Cleveland’s Yuandale Evans and there’s a mouthwatering rematch of the 2016 fight of the year contender between Heather Hardy and Shelly Vincent, with the WBO World Featherweight title.

Tickets for Saturday night’s action are available from www.MSG.com

The SNAC brand is rapidly growing, and these three world class fighters are a major reason why.”

DANIEL JACOBS AND SERGIY DEREVYANCHENKO CLASH FOR IBF WORLD MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE

Daniel Jacobs (34-2, 29 KOs) and Sergiy Derevyanchenko (12-0, 10 KOs) will clash for the vacant IBF World Middleweight Title and Alberto Machado (20-0, 16 KOs) will defend his WBA Super Featherweight Title against Yuandale Evans (20-1, 14 KOs on Saturday, October 27 at the Hulu Theater from Madison Square Garden in New York. The doubleheader will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Jacobs, fighting out of Brooklyn, N.Y., is in hot form having taken the unbeaten records of Luis Arias and Maciej Sulecki in his last two outings at the Nassau Coliseum, Long Island and Barclays Center, Brooklyn respectively, punctuating his win over Sulecki with a knockdown in the final session.

The ‘Miracle Man’ is gunning to regain his world champion status having lost his WBA crown to Kazakh star Gennady Golovkin in a tight unification tussle in March 2017 in New York, and with Golovkin and Mexican hero Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez meeting in a rematch in September, Jacobs is hunting down the winner.

Derevyanchenko has his own designs on those blockbuster nights though. Born in Feodosia, Crimea, Ukraine, and now based in Brooklyn, NY, Derevyanchenko was a touted amateur, compiling an astonishing record of 390-20, as well as a 23-1 ledger in the World Series of Boxing, and representing Ukraine in the 2008 Olympics, before turning pro in July 2014. Known as “The Technician,” Derevyanchenko is fundamentally sound with superb reflexes, deft defense and devastating power, having stopped 10 of his 12 professional opponents thus far.

In a final IBF eliminator for mandatory status, Derevyanchenko proved he could carry his power into the later rounds, halting Tureano Johnson in the 12th and final frame of their August 2017 clash. One year earlier, Derevyanchenko knocked out former world champion Sam Soliman, becoming only the second man to do so, inside two rounds in July 2016, in an IBF elimination bout for the #2 ranking. While awaiting his title shot, Derevyanchenko dusted off the experienced Dashon Johnson in six stanzas in his last bout on March 3. Co-promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Fight Promotions Inc., Derevyanchenko is thrilled that his shot at coronation will take place in his debut at Madison Square Garden, the Mecca of Boxing.

Jacobs and Derevyanchenko are familiar foes as they both hone their skills with trainer Andre Rozier, who will be in Jacobs’ corner and camp for the bout, but Brooklyn hero Jacobs doesn’t believe that will play a part in their clash – and predicts a triumphant return to World champion status in a tough fight. Gary Stark Sr. will take over head trainer responsibilities for Derevyanchenko as he prepares for his first world championship opportunity.

Jacobs vs. Derevyanchenko will top a stacked bill in New York as the main event of a world title double-header. In the co-main event, unbeaten Puerto Rican star Alberto “El Explosivo” Machado makes the second defense of his WBA World Super Featherweight title against Cleveland’s Yuandale Evans in a 12-round fight presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Miguel Cotto Promotions and DiBella Entertainment.

Topping the non-televised bill is a rematch of the 2016 women’s fight of the year as Heather Hardy (21-0, 4 KOs) and Shelly Vincent (23-1, 1 KO) renew their rivalry, with the vacant WBO World Featherweight strap on the line after Hardy edged their fantastic first meeting.

“I’m excited to be back in New York City fighting in my hometown,” said Jacobs. “This opportunity for a world title is one I don’t take lightly and I’m preparing myself to be in an incredible fight with Sergey Derevyanchenko. I’ve always felt that I was the best middleweight in the world with this type of fight I’m that much closer to all the that glory and to proving to the world I am the best ”

“I’m a step away from my dream and I will not miss this chance,” said Derevyanchenko. “From my time in the amateurs to my pro career, this has been a long time coming for me. I’ve beaten everyone they’ve put in front of me to earn this shot. Having trained with Danny, I know him very well and we are friends. However, it will be strictly business in the ring. I will not be denied. The belt will be mine.”

“I feel excited to make the second defense of my title, but this time before all of my Puerto Rican brothers in New York,” said Machado. “I’m anxious to get to Los Angeles to start the strong stages of preparation and solidify myself as a champion for the second time with a convincing win for all of Puerto Rico. Thank you to HBO for believing in me. Thank you to Peter Nelson, Miguel Cotto Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions. Yuandale Evans is a great fighter who comes with a lot of hunger after years of rest. But this time I will go into the ring with extra motivation to reward all my people in person and those watching at home with a great victory.”

“I want to let Machado know that I am taking the belt home,” said Evans. “Training has been going great and I’ve been doing my homework. Machado is tall and strong, but he’s never fought a guy like me, who can hit like me. To fight for a world title at Madison Square Garden is a dream come true. I am going make the most out of this opportunity. This is my time to shine.”

“One of the saddest things is that in 2016, Shelly and I put on the fight of the year, and so many people missed it,” said Hardy. “We’ve been dying to do the rematch but under the right circumstances. This is a great time for women’s boxing and a great event to showcase the rematch – and I’m going to bring home that title, don’t worry about that.”

“Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to shoot hoops at MSG – now I’m going to get to beat Heather’s ass there,” said Vincent. “The first fight was close, I thought I won it, Heather thought she won it, some people thought I won, some thought she won, some thought it was a draw.

“This time, you are going to see the old ‘Shelito’ – I’ve got more than just three weeks to get ready, and I think it’ll be a repeat of the first fight, non-stop punching, and my hands are going to be all over Heather Hardy like she’s my woman and I’m not leaving without that title.”

“When we started working with Danny, the goal was always to become World Champion and now the time has come,” said Jacobs’ promoter Eddie Hearn. “This is brilliant match up but I strongly believe on October 27 at MSG Danny will be crowned champion and add another chapter to this Cinderella story.

“It’s a powerful triple-header with unbeaten WBA Super-Featherweight champion Alberto Machado defending his crown against Cleveland contender Yuandale ‘Money Shot’ Evans and New York’s own Heather Hardy meeting Shelly Vincent in a rematch of their 2016 Fight if the Year, with the WBO World Featherweight crown on the line. October 27 will be an electric night in New York.”

“With over 400 amateur bouts, a trip to the Olympics, and experience in the World Series of Boxing, Sergiy was adamant with me that he wanted to fight for a world title against the biggest name available,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment.

“I’ve known Danny since he was a kid. He is a great fighter in and out of the ring. Stylistically, this is a can’t-miss action fight. Sergiy studies his opponents, finds their weaknesses, then breaks them down. That is why he has such a great chance to win this fight and become the IBF Middleweight Champion.

“Yuandale Evans has a tremendous opportunity in the co-feature to capture his first world title against champion Alberto Machado. Coming off the biggest win of his career, Evans is highly motivated to seize the moment and perform at his best. Both Machado and Evans can bang and like to brawl, so this should make for a very entertaining opening bout on HBO.

“Finally, Heather ‘The Heat’ Hardy and Shelly ‘Shelito’s Way’ Vincent will get the chance to rematch their 2016 Female Fight of the Year. The first fight was a barnburner, and this promises to be nothing less. The stakes are higher this time, as both women will compete for the WBO Featherweight Championship of the World. A World Championship in boxing has been a lifelong dream for both, and I am thrilled that they will get this opportunity on October 27.”

“Alberto Machado is determined to prove that he is the best super featherweight in the world,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “He beat a strong champion in Jezreel Corrales and defended his crown against a tough contender in Rafael Mensah. In both fight, he used his skills and power to obtain the victory, and I’m positive he will do the same against Evans before legion of Puerto Rican fans in New York. I have no doubts he will be recognized as one of the best champions that Puerto Rico has produced.”

“Alberto Machado is building his own legacy fight after fight,” said Miguel Cotto, President of Miguel Cotto Promotions. “He wants to be the best in his division and is hungry for the big challenges. He has the best opportunity to showcase his skills in front of his Puerto Rican brothers at The Garden in New York.”

Tickets are on sale NOW from TicketMaster.com priced from $46, $66, $106, $206 and $356 (ringside).

Canelo – Golovkin talks seem dead; Canelo looks to Jacobs

The negotiations for the rewatch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin have stalled and Alvarez has now turned his attention to Daniel Jacobs, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“He’s (Golovkin) stubborn and wanting 50-50, and it’s not going to happen,” Alvarez promoter Oscar De La Hoya told ESPN about Golovkin. “The Canelo train has left the station.”

“So there’s a deal on the table for Daniel Jacobs to fight Sept. 15 against Canelo,” De La Hoya said. “Eddie loves the idea. He loves the fight. Daniel Jacobs loves the fight, and we love the fight as well. So we’re just moving forward and making sure that Canelo has the toughest dance partner possible for Sept. 15.”

“I can tell you that we love the fight,” Jacobs promoter Eddie Hearn said. “It’s a fight that when I signed Daniel Jacobs he told me he believes he beats Canelo every day of the week. We had a brief conversation with Golden Boy about a week ago or so [when Alvarez-Golovkin negotiations were first on the ropes], and it was hard to tell whether it was part of the plan in the negotiations with Canelo-Golovkin or if they really wanted the fight. We confirmed our interest, and today we received an official offer to fight Canelo on Sept. 15.

“I’ve taken the offer to Keith Connolly, Danny’s manager, Danny. We’re extremely interested. Obviously, it’s a huge fight.”

“It’s a first offer, and we are not looking to be difficult, but we know our value in the fight,” Hearn said. “We have a guy in Daniel Jacobs who, in my opinion, beat Gennady Golovkin, but in anybody’s opinion had a wonderful fight with Golovkin which many couldn’t split. In that respect, I see Jacobs as the perfect guy to fight Canelo.

“This is one of the reasons we signed with HBO — to get this fight. Now we’re here. I will push for every dime for my client. At the same time, we realize this is a wonderful opportunity, and we’ll do everything we can to make this fight. This is a major, major, major fight for Danny Jacobs. We know the money involved in the fight. We believe it does big pay-per-view numbers.”

De La Hoya said he hoped to also wrap it up quickly.

“The deadline is going to be middle of this month because we have to start promoting and lock down everything,” he said. “Our sponsors are ready to go, and we want to give the fight fans the best possible fight, and unfortunately GGG didn’t budge from his 50-50, so we’re moving on.”

“Jacobs gave GGG a run for his money. A lot of people thought that he won,” De La Hoya said. “I can’t say he won’t be Canelo’s toughest fight. He might be tougher than GGG.”

“What people are not understanding is I am not going to come off my demands for the rematch,” De La Hoya said. “The fact that GGG is stubborn on a 50-50 split, and it’s ludicrous. It’s never going to happen. He wants 50-50, and it’s never going to happen. We had already come to terms, and they had the contracts a long time, several weeks, and now he wants 50-50?”

“We were willing to budge, but now I’m fed up with this, and I’ve decided to move on. So we are talking to Eddie Hearn about Jacobs,” De La Hoya said. “Let’s make the best deal possible. The deal is on the table for Daniel Jacobs, and hopefully we can get it signed sooner than later so we can start promoting the fight.”

“I spoke to Eric [Monday night], and we were still in discussions, so I think if there’s a way to find a solution, we’ll try to find it, but I didn’t speak to him [on Tuesday],” Golovkin promoter Tom Loeffler said. “But 50-50 is the position [Golovkin] has taken. Canelo’s taken his position. It’s our job to figure out if there’s a way to make the fight work. All I can say is that those two guys [Alvarez and Jacobs] are guys GGG already beat last year. Canelo would make more in a GGG fight than he will against Daniel Jacobs, so that goes both ways.”

“If GGG ever comes to his senses, we can fight next year if he wants for Cinco de Mayo,” De La Hoya said. “I tell you one thing — the money he would make for Canelo, he now has to fight five or six opponents to make that kind of money. We’ve moved on.”

An infomercial for an infomercial for a . . .

By Bart Barry-

Saturday on an HBO telecast from Brooklyn middleweight mandatory challenger Danny “Miracle Man” Jacobs dropped and decisioned Polish junior middleweight Maciej “Certainly Top 10, Maybe Top 5” Sulecki. Before that American heavyweight contender Jarell “Big Baby” Miller didn’t drop but did decision French journeyman Johann Duhaupas. Watching the 24 rounds felt heavy, damp, soggy even, like the card wasn’t primarily intended to entertain but to portend entertaining happenings some other time.

Twas another mediocre broadcast for HBO, but writing that feels bullying, unseemly, beneath oneself – uninsightful because anyone who already doesn’t know it anyway feels it. This column has lacked charity for boxing’s former heart and soul for sometime now, and since its writer isn’t sure such ungraciousness be merited, he needs err to the bonhomous side of the truth on occasion. Let’s try and make this that occasion.

Closing arguments are set to happen today in the Department of Justice’s case against a merger between communications company AT&T and media company Time Warner, parent to HBO, parent to HBO Sports, parent to the World Championship After Dark family or whatever brandnames boxing currently hides under (c’mon now, keep it gracious). These last two years of merging and not merging have to have hamstrung HBO’s coverage of our sport and serve to emphasize the importance of corporate continuity howsoever much business selfhelp literature still fetishizes disruption. Some clarity from a federal government that, under any other executive leadership of the last halfcentury or so, would’ve rubberstamped such a merger – does it obviously harm consumers in the next three months? well, in that case, 30,000 layoffs down the road is just the market god’s way – must be welcomed by those who operate within budgetary constraints. The case against the merger looks arbitrary and spiteful, of course, but it may set an unintentional precedent of asking how a corporate merger benefits customers and employees, not solely shareholders, rather than applying an eroding threshold of how much it harms them.

None of that helps HBO Sports’ nearterm outlook. If the merger gets blocked, a return to business-as-usual sees HBO continue to reexamine its relationship with our beloved sport, writing of erosion, under a new set of assumptions about how essential boxing is (we know boxing is in a bit of a renaissance right now, but the old data in the old bulletpoints of the old slideshows upon which old executives of old media companies make their decisions, why, those are probably partying like it’s 2014). If the merger happens, which even in our current war-is-peace moment still appears probable, HBO must immediately set about the task of seducing its new master, and does anyone think Danny Jacobs or Maciej Sulecki or Jarell Miller or Johann Duhaupas (or Vanes Martirosyan) composes a compelling case for more money?

Nobody does, no. Even those who would pay these guys whatever they were paid see them as a way to bring Anthony Joshua to HBO, or barring that, as a promotional tool for the GolovCanelo rematch that won’t happen Saturday. It’s the only obvious reason you pay the Miracle Man to fight the last weekend in April against a fortunately unknuckled Polish junior middleweight like Sulecki: To ensure by contrast a captive audience for the fifth installment of GolovCanelo 24/7. Untethered from that nearly nothing about Saturday’s broadcast makes sense much less resonates.

Jarell Miller is not very good; there’s not imagination enough in the known universe to call a 300-pound man who doesn’t hurt people compelling. “Oh, but he’s really active and his chest protrudes more than his belly!” – not a recommended bulletpoint for HBO Sports’ first presentation to AT&T management.

Danny Jacobs is a b-level talent with an interesting story that is now threadbare. He’s a cool guy you cheer for when he’s an underdog, but if you have to squint to see nextlevel talent against a tailormade b-side like Sulecki there isn’t nextlevel talent. “He went rounds with GGG!” – a mark of excellence solely within the ranks (measurably reduced since September) of an alternate reality that insists Golovkin is a historic talent. Anyway, when a unanimous-decision loss to Gennady Golovkin is the second-best victory of a prizefighting career begun in 2007 its bearer is not the future of the middleweight division.

Perhaps, then, Vanes “Former U.S. Olympian” Martirosyan is.

No.

A controversial and surprising conclusion, that, I know, but one written by a man who wears with understandable pride this distinction: I attended Martirosyan’s pro debut 13 years ago. That evening at Fort McDowell Casino the man then known as “The Nightmare” had Freddie Roach in his corner but couldn’t stop a 4-3-1 Texas trialhorse named Jesse Orta, foretelling a mildly disappointing career mildly full of mild disappointments.

Saturday Martirosyan becomes the third non-middleweight of the last four men to challenge middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin who is so dominant no middleweight will face him. Surely then, you’re thinking, if the most feared puncher in the history of the middleweight division hasn’t been fighting too-frightened middleweights he must’ve spent the last two years decimating light heavyweights or at least super middleweights? Why, no, actually. Golovkin’s reign of terror at 160 pounds has been perpetrated on two light-middleweights, and get this, a welterweight – 154, 154, 147 – a streak broken by an aforementioned victory over Jacobs inconclusive enough to be part of Jacobs promotions ever since.

But as this column nominally sought a philanthropic spirit towards HBO Sports’ prospects, let us end with a clarifying question about future budgetary items: How do the purses of HBO’s mainevent b-sides, Sulecki and Martirosyan, compare with the stipends paid for those events to Jim Lampley, Max Kellerman, Roy Jones and Harold Lederman?

DANIEL JACOBS vs. MACIEJ SULECKI JARRELL MILLER vs. JOHANN DUHAUPAS International Media Conference Call Transcript

Bernie Bahrmasel: Thank you very much for all the international media joining us on this call today, and special thanks for the great turnouts we’ve had at our press events in New York City for Jarrell Miller’s media lunch and last week at Gleason’s Gym for Jarrell Miller and for Daniel Jacobs. The conference call today will be structured with Daniel Jacobs and Maciej Sulecki joining us first and Jarrell Miller and Johann Duhaupas in the second segment.

At this time, it’s my pleasure to turn over the call to the promotor of “Straight Outta Brooklyn,” Mr. Eddie Hearn from Matchroom Boxing.

Eddie Hearn:Thank you, Bernie, and thanks, everyone, for joining online today. I have to say, I’m very, very excited about this event next week because I think this middleweight division is lining up so perfectly. I mean, it’s in a mess but through the clouds we can see opportunities, we can see ourselves being active while others are being inactive and getting ready to be involved in some major, major fights, but firstly, Danny Jacobs has, I think, one of the toughest fights of his career against Maciej Sulecki who is undefeated. A very, very dangerous young man who comes with no fear, nothing to lose, agile, but as I’ve said before, I believe Daniel Jacobs is the best middleweight in the world, and now that things are shaking up in the division, he’s going to get a chance to prove it.

This fight is a final eliminator for the WBA Middleweight Championship of the world. The winner will be the automatic mandatory. I know GGG has his stuff to sort out, but there’ll be no escape after this fight, and we don’t have to be the mandatory, but we want to make sure that there’s no way out for any champion to fight Danny Jacobs, so it’s a great fight. Of course, it’s a double header on HBO. We’ll also have a big heavyweight matchup between Jarrell Miller and Johann Duhaupas, which we’re going to talk about after.

Even beneath those guys, off the HBO card, this card is absolutely stacked, I think the biggest star in women’s boxing, Katie Taylor, WBA world champion via Victoria Bustos, the IBF World Champion in a great unification matchup. Then we have, I think, one of the most hard-hitting, entertaining young fighters in Shohjahon Ergashev, 11 and 0 with 11 KOs and our debut of our Rio Olympic gold medalist, Daniyar Yeleussinov, the gold medalist at the Rio Olympics in the welterweight division from Kazakhstan, he’s an absolutely fantastic young fighter. But right now it’s all about the main event, Jacobs against Sulecki is going to be an absolute war at the Barclays Center. Thank you, as always to our friends at Brooklyn Boxing and of course, HBO. We’re looking forward to a big night and a massive statement ahead for Daniel Jacobs.

We’ll open it up now to the floor for questions.

Dan Rafael:Hi, Danny, good to talk to you. Eddie, thanks for doing this. Danny, I want to start with this question. I mean, I know you’re getting ready for this fight with Sulecki. It’s been in the planning stages for a while, it’s been on the books for a while but I wondered if there was any thought on your team’s behalf and maybe, Eddie, you could chime in on this also, that when the Canelo Alvarez fight was cancelled, if there was any thought about maybe knocking this fight out and seeing if you could get back in there for the rematch with Golovkin right off the bat, even if it was going to be at that point, maybe a month or so, a month and a half notice. Ever any thought in your mind that would be a great idea?

Daniel Jacobs:Well, it was a thought, but it wasn’t nothing that was very significant. I mean, I had, obviously, a contract with fighting Sulecki and I want to make sure he has his opportunity and give him his just due as well, with all due respect to him. He’s a tough opponent too so I know it’s going to be a great fight and that’s what I’m looking forward to, so even though I have big dreams and big hopes of fighting for the championship, I already had something lined in place. I know a lot of people think that GGG and Canelo, guys that—they’re superstars that are big and I get it, but at that very moment it wasn’t as if we needed that opportunity.

I consider myself to be the best middleweight in the world and I always wanted to make sure that I’ve prepared for this guy and this after this opportunity, if a great opportunity such as what has already presented itself with the WBA, this is kind of perfect timing so it was a thought but it was a thought that went and passed.

Dan Rafael:Okay, very good. Eddie, did you get any thoughts about that when this whole thing went down with GGG and Canelo?

Eddie Hearn:I’m not really into taking fights at short notice or without the right preparation for those kinds of fights when you have the opportunities in front of you that Danny Jacobs has. I think if he didn’t have a TV deal, if he wasn’t able to box, basically, whenever he wanted, if he wasn’t able to pick and choose his dates or fight at a great venue, then yes, there maybe it would have been a position to say, let’s try and get that instead but the future is very clear right now and one thing that we said to Danny when he joined the team was that he’s going to know exactly when he’s boxing. He’s going to be keeping nice and active and we don’t want to disrupt that, so we’re going to do our own thing. This is a real fight against Sulecki.

Of course, we’re looking at Canelo and we’re looking at Golovkin, but we’re not overlooking the fight on April 28and I’m really comfortable that after a great performance by Danny Jacobs on April 28, then you talk about the superstars of the division. I don’t see why Danny Jacobs is not a superstar of the division. I believe he already is and with the mess with Canelo and Golovkin, I make it a three-horse race right now between Saunders, Golovkin and Danny Jacobs.

Dan Rafael:That’s a fair point. I just have one more question for you, Danny. A lot of people aren’t that familiar with Sulecki. I mean, he hasn’t had a tremendous amount of exposure in the United States as far as TV goes. He is not from here, so it’s understandable that not a lot of people know him, but if you look at his record, he has some good wins on there. He stopped Centeno in the tenth round. Centeno is fighting Charlo for the interim title on Saturday. He has a very lopsided win against Culcay who had a belt for a little bit.

When you look at his record, what do you look at and see as far as how he stacks up in this weight class? Because he’s fought both at 160 and at 154.

Daniel Jacobs:Well, I look at him as a live dog. I look at him as a very worthy opponent. With his Centeno fight, it was a very impressive fight for me, and he was scouted to be the next, so the fact that he stopped him shows a lot and it says a lot about him. I think, his talent says a lot as well and most importantly, he has really good heart and he comes to fight, so him having that on his back and coming into Brooklyn, which is my backyard, I’m pretty sure this guy is willing to go.

Like I said, this is a great opportunity for both of us but for him, this is the first of his kind so he’s really going to go all out.

Dan Rafael:Got you. Okay. Thank you for that. I have one question for Sulecki, if he’s on. Sulecki, is that alright?

Maciej Sulecki:Yes.

Dan Rafael:Terrific. Could you ask him just about how he views this? I mean it’s not a championship fight but as Eddie said, it is an eliminator to become the mandatory for one of the belts that Gennady Golovkin has, and I just would like Sulecki’s view on the magnitude of this fight in his career with the opportunity to be fighting in this kind of arena on HBO against a well-known opponent like Danny Jacobs in Danny’s hometown.

Maciej Sulecki:I worked very hard for this opportunity, first of all, to be in this place, to stand in this position. I am ready. The previous fights were just a preparation for me being well-known to everyone. This kind of situation is giving me extra motivation. This is an extra, I’m going to use the word kick-in-the-ass for me to just be even better. Like I said before, maybe you guys didn’t know me before, but you guys are going to know me after this fight.

Dan Rafael:Alright, very good. Thank you, guys. I appreciate your time today.

Keith Idec:Yes, my question is for Sulecki. Can you ask him what he thinks of Danny and how Danny fared against Golovkin? What he thinks of him, overall, as a fighter?

Maciej Sulecki:First of all, this was the best Danny Jacobs fight ever. I don’t think he can ever repeat this kind of performance. It was more about Golovkin not fighting tactically well. It was a bench fight by Golovkin and I am really surprised why people are judging Danny Jacobs only by using his fight versus Golovkin. Why not judge Danny to his fight versus Arias?

Keith Idec: Maciej, do you think that Danny is overrated? Is that what you mean?

Maciej Sulecki:No. I think he’s a very good fighter and I’ve always said this. I have a lot of respect for Danny and to his character and his boxing skills, but I don’t treat him as anyone really special.

Keith Idec:But, is Danny the best you’ve fought?

Maciej Sulecki: Of course. When you look at paper and pen and wins and losses, Danny Jacobs is the best fighter who I ever fought, but we’re going to verify who he is on the April 28.

Keith Idec:Who is the best fighter he has fought before Danny?

Maciej Sulecki:It’s hard to say but the guy who didn’t really match with my skills was Culcay.

Keith Idec:Thank you

Gayle Falkenthal:Good afternoon, good morning, everybody. Danny, you’ve been working now for several bouts with Chris Algieri and I’d like to hear more now that you’ve had more time with him, how that’s impacted your training, and then I have a follow up related to that for Mr. Sulecki.

Daniel Jacobs:Thank you. It’s been quite well, actually. We’ve grown, not only our relationship together but I think I’ve grown knowledge with this guy. He’s taught me a lot about the body, he’s taught me a lot about nutrition and how I can prepare myself from this point out. It’s shown me a great opportunity to work with somebody who is a former world champion, who is a stellar fighter himself and who’s been through the same trenches and the same training regimens that you’ve been in, the tough tactics that we’ve had to go through each and every time we’re in training.

To have somebody who understands is an incredible feeling and it’s all that I’ve been learning throughout the past, two fights with this guy—this is our third fight, actually, so three fights. It’s really been great for me. No complaints.

Gayle Falkenthal:Time flies. He’s feeding you more than just food.

Daniel Jacobs:Yes. He’s feeding my soul. He’s feeding my brain and he’s motivating me, so yes, it’s a lot more than just food.

Gayle Falkenthal:And, then turning on the same subject to Mr. Sulecki, because of working this way, Danny has been able to come in on the day of the fight in a fairly good size. Are you concerned at all about seeing the size differential on fight night?

Maciej Sulecki:No, this is absolutely not my concern because the night of the fight I expect to be as big as Danny Jacobs. If there’s going to be any difference, maybe it’s going to be 2 pounds, maybe 2.5. Now, the question is who is going to have more?

Gayle Falkenthal:Very good. Thank you. I do have one more follow up question, if I have a moment and this is back to you, Danny, and Eddie, you need to be listening. You had, obviously, a change of promotor and sometimes, as Americans, we look on in envy seeing these huge British crowds, these major promotions. What do you think the difference is and what kind of difference is it making in your career?

Daniel Jacobs:It’s a great opportunity to have a promotor genuinely care about you and truly push for you and to making you the superstar that I always knew that I could be, so I’m just glad that I have someone, no matter where he’s from, no matter what he does, he pushes hard for his fighters and that’s mostly what I’m grateful for. Thank you.

Eddie Hearn: Danny is the boss. There’s always an old adage that the promoter is but it’s not that way at all, especially not with us. I mean, Danny calls the shots, we provide the opportunity for him. We’re just getting started. This is the second fight on HBO. The first one, we got the win. Now, we go for the big performance and the big statement. The path is starting to become clear and we see ticket sales improving dramatically from the last fight.

Obviously, now he’s back in Brooklyn as well and we’re really looking to put on a big show on April 28 with the undercard, with the entertainment and with Danny Jacobs. It’s a pleasure to work with him and the motivation for me is to see him become world middleweight champion. Again, that’s really all I care about in his journeys, is to give him the opportunity and to watch him become champion again.

Gayle Falkenthal:Thank you very much, gentlemen. All the best to you.

Eddie Goldman:Danny, I want to ask you in terms of again, about the issue of the weight. Do you view Sulecki as more of a middleweight or a junior middleweight? Because he did fight Centeno at middleweight but his last couple of fights, including against Culcay were at junior middleweight, so how much of a factor do you think that’s going to be in this fight?

Daniel Jacobs:Well, I don’t think it’s going to be a huge factor. I mean, he fluctuates up and down so he’s very comfortable. I would pursue him to fight as a middleweight. I wouldn’t think that it would be a drastic difference. Like you said, he’s going to be in there about the same weight as I’m going to be in there, so it’s really no different. It’s all about the skill. Weight shouldn’t be really a factor inside the ring anyway because Muhammad Ali once said, “You can’t hit what you can’t see,” then it doesn’t make a difference anyway. And, that’s what I look forward to improving on, on April 28, is that I have the skills to pay the bills. It’s not anything to do with weight or weight advantage. It’s going to be strictly what I possess internally.

Eddie Goldman:What advantages do you see that you have in this fight?

Daniel Jacobs:Almost every one, but to be descriptive, I’ll say I have way more experience with being at this position with the lights and the cameras and the action and having this specific type of mega fight. I won’t say this is the mega fight with Sulecki but it’s in Brooklyn, New York, it’s on HBO and it’ll be in front of hopefully a sold-out crowd in Brooklyn. I’m used to stuff like that at this point in my career, and I think that takes you a long way in the sport of boxing. Floyd Mayweather said, “The greats always perform best under the lights.” And, I think I really do well under the lights.

Now, I’ve come into my own over the years and with the GGG fight, I really felt like I really made a stamp and I really told myself a lot, who I am and what I have to offer to the sport, and we just want to continue that. It’s going to be a very competitive fight for however long it lasts and I’m looking forward to proving to the world that I’m the best middleweight.

Eddie Goldman:Do you have a prediction for the fight?

Daniel Jacobs:I don’t like making predictions, I just see myself being the victor and having my hands raised by the end of the night.

Eddie Goldman:You were asked about the Arias fight, the last fight, and not being able to stop them. Do you want to comment on, I mean, you pretty much scored almost a shutout on the cards, but can you comment on your performance in that fight?

Daniel Jacobs:I think I did very well. I think you can’t knockout everybody, especially when a guy goes into survival mode. Arias is a tough customer and he has skills. He didn’t show the skills that night, but he was able to hold on and show a little bit more defense, a lot more defense than offense, and it was really up to me just to look impressive and I think I did just that, even though I didn’t get the knockout.

You can’t really knock everyone out. Golovkin was made out to be knockout artist, he didn’t knock everyone out and a lot of other people in boxing, they can say the same thing. It’s about judging my performance, and did I look sharp? Yes, I did. Did I win every round? Yes, I did. You have to look at the things like that because just because a guy doesn’t get a knockout, I mean you can’t say it’s a bad performance because I looked very impressive and studying that fight, I did a lot of things right.

Yes, I could have done more, as all boxers could do more once looking back at their past performances, but judging that fight, I do think I did very well.

Eddie Goldman:Do you plan to stay at 160 for a while? Because I know there was some talk, maybe you would go up to 168 because you’ve been at 160 for quite a long time. Have you thought about that?

Daniel Jacobs:That was just a thought, but right now my focus is being the king at middleweight. I have a job right now, it’s not done. I’m going to make sure that if I go up to 168 pounds, I’ve taken care of everything that I need to take care of in the middleweight division. I’m not overlooking anyone but at the same time, I’m comfortable with making 160 pounds. I know I’m probably one of the biggest middleweights out there, but I have no problem making weight. I can’t help if the fans are saying I’m too big or I’m a weight bully or whatever the illusion is out there in the world, I think my skills speak for themselves.

Eddie Goldman:Alright. Good luck in the fight.

Eddie Hearn:This is another great fight in the division and very important in the worldwide rankings. Jarrell, it looks like Anthony Joshua’s going to be hopefully ringside for this fight, as well, to watch. I think Jarrell Miller is due a big performance. I think he has some good wins, some solid wins against Washington and Wach but I think Duhaupas is going to really come and give him a fight. You saw him in a great fight with Deontay Wilder, you know, an eleven-round war, and now I think Jarrell Miller’s going to make a really big statement in front of his home fans on April 28.

Dan Rafael:Hello, everybody, once again. Jarrell, good to talk to you. How you been?

Jarrell Miller:I’m good brother, how are you?

Dan Rafael:I’m good. Thank you. My question for you, I know you have to fight this fight on April 28, but of course, everybody knows that there’s the possibility that this would be like the audition fight for you to get a shot at Anthony Joshua and his unified heavyweight championship, and I wonder from your perspective, is that distracting to you, or is that motivation for you? What has Eddie told you about the prospect of you getting that fight with a victory on April 28?

Jarrell Miller:Yes, well first of all, there’s no distractions, because I haven’t seen any paperwork, and I verbally haven’t heard anything from Eddie Hearn about that. It is all media talk. When I actually see a physical paper or some kind of agreement or something, either physical or have a conversation about it, then I’ll believe it. You know what I mean, so I’m not a gullible guy. I don’t believe half of anything until it’s actually in front of me. My main focus is Johann Duhaupas, and I’m going to knock him out and then I go to the drawing board to see what fits me best.

Dan Rafael:Jarrell, when Duhaupas fought for the title against Wilder, a couple of years ago, I mean granted he lost the fight, but he had a couple of big moments in that fight. He kind of rocked Wilder at one point. Do you put any stock in that as something you have to be concerned about or do you think that was sort of, you he got kind of a lucky moment for him in that fight?

Jarrell Miller:I mean, you got to be ready for anything. You know what I mean. Remember, everybody’s talking about Gerald Washington was going beat me, he gave Deontay Wilder what was the toughest five rounds of his career. You can’t praise the guy on a loss, I mean you can learn from certain things from the loss. Like I said before, I’m a totally different fighter than Deontay. So, I’m not going to take nothing from it bad, but I can take some good from it and I say, listen, I know you can take a hell of a beating, and come back to me and you’re going to take more of a beating.

Dan Rafael:Okay. Very good. Eddie, if you could address the prospect of this to many being an audition for Jarrell as a possible summer fight against Anthony Joshua. What are your thoughts about that possibility?

Eddie Hearn:I’ve seen a lot of Jarrell Miller comments, I know he doesn’t believe it, but what we all we can do is say that Jarrell Miller against Joshua is a fight we’re very interested in. If we’re going to come to America, that’s a fight that would definitely appeal to us. The fight I’ve mentioned to Jarrell before and Dmitry, he’s right, he doesn’t have any paperwork, but we’ll see what happens. I think if has a commanding performance against Duhaupas, why not make that fight happen, but listen, whether he takes it or not is up to Jarrell, and whether he believes it or not, is up to him as well.

Dan Rafael:Okay, very good. Thanks a lot guys. I appreciate it.

Keith Idec:My question is for Johann. If you could ask him what he thinks about Jarrell Miller, or maybe how Miller compares to Wilder, in terms of how difficult an opponent he is?

Johann Duhaupas:Jarrell Miller he is undefeated boxer, and he’s boxing at home so he has this advantage. We can’t compare Miller and Wilder because they are both very different. Miller is very heavy and he just keeps pushing and Wilder use a lot of his legs and he is very good shape.

Keith Idec:Yes, I have a question for Jarrell. Jarrell, he’s been knocked out before, of course. I know you can’t go into fights looking for knockouts, but how important is that to you to be able to knock him out next week?

Jarrell Miller:I mean, you know a lot of times fighters say they don’t go into fights looking for knockouts and I always told fighters, interviewers, and the public, all the time that that’s a lie. As fighters, you always try to look for the knockouts. In every one of my fights I try to go for the knockout. Will it come? I sure hope so. Am I going to go look for it? Damn, right.

So, come April 28 Johann got some heavy hits and a heavy body in front of him and I’m not going to back up. I like his fighting style, I think he’s tailored made to me, I think he’s going to bring the fight and that’s what’s going to cause him to get his behind knocked out, come April 28. So, just be ready.

Keith Idec:I just have a quick question for Eddie, also. Eddie, if you could just tell him how important it is for Jarrell to look good and maybe knock out Duhaupas in this fight if he does get the opportunity to fight Joshua to sell that fight?

Eddie Hearn:Jarrell’s got to do what Jarrell’s got to do. He’s not about Jarrell chasing the Joshua fight. Jarrell wants to fight for the world heavyweight title, I’m sure. And Dmitry wants to take him to that position. Obviously, if he looks good, and people are interested to see the fight, there’s more chance of it happening, but I think Jarrell has a tough enough job in front of him on April 28. He has to focus on getting the win. If he can look great, he’s on HBO, he has a massive audience watching him, and it’s a chance to really establish himself and make a statement for the division.

Keith Idec:Thank you, guys.

Gayle Falkenthal:To Jarrell, and then the follow up to Johann, same question. It’s similar to Keith about his question to making a statement, obviously, you’re in line either of you with a win for perhaps a much bigger opponent and the heavyweight division has always been a division of very big personalities to go along with being big men. So, how important is it to, not only to make the statement, but be entertaining in this division of very big personalities?

Jarrell Miller:I do know we have two heavyweight champions and both of them are not really entertaining outside the ring. One is a hype job to me and the other one just run his mouth a whole lot. So, when it comes to being a full package, you better be the full package. The only thing that’s missing is the title around my waist.

Come April 28, I’m going to show the people, show the fans, and show the media why this baby’s next in line. Like I said before, they can run, but they can hide for so long. Of course, you’ve got to be both. You know, that’s part of the game, there’s so much PR to sell but if you get in front of a microphone, or in front of a camera, they have no personality, which we see in AJ, he has no personality, and Deontay, just talk a whole bunch of rubbish, you know what I’m saying? So, it’s going to gravitate to you, especially to an American heavyweight like, Deontay Wilder. So, like I said before, once you get there and I kick in that front door, it’s a whole different story.

Gayle Falkenthal:How do you compare yourself to the other American heavyweight that we just mentioned, Deontay, who some people do find him entertaining and he does make a lot of noise?

Jarrell Miller:He’s just bound to make a lot of noise. He had a title for over three years I mean, he was just starting to make some noise. It took him long enough. I compare myself better than all of those guys because I know what I bring to the table. Even though my last performance wasn’t the best, come April 28, you’re going to see a bigger, stronger, faster, more incredible, mammoth of a heavyweight. And you’re going to see why that I am so unstoppable and you’re going to see why when it comes to April 28, what I’m going to bring to the heavyweight division.

Gayle Falkenthal:And to Johann, same question.

Johann Duhaupas:Miller is just an American making noise. I understands that, but I choose not to do it.

Eddie Goldman:Johann, you’ve had some very interesting fights. I know you took the fight with Povetkin at the last minute because of what went on with that fight and had a couple of fights after that. Where do you think you are you now as a fighter, and now that you’ve had proper preparation for this fight with Jarrell Miller?

Johann Duhaupas:I’ve never been as ready as he is now. I’m very confident, because I have lot of experience from my previous fights I’ve had really great preparation. I’m ready and I can beat Miller. He thinks he will beat me easy and then face Joshua. I am preparing in the United States, I am ready to go tomorrow.

Eddie Hearn:Yes, thanks everyone for joining in. I think, again, we have such a stacked card, April 28, Barclays Center, two brilliant TV fights on HBO, as well. Jacobs, Sulecki, final eliminator, a very important fight for the heavyweight division in Big Baby Miller against Johann Duhaupas.

We look forward to seeing you all for fight week activities, Wednesday for the workout, Thursday for the press conference, Friday for the weigh in, and Saturday for the big fight night. We’ll see you there.
