“It’s an honor to be fighting back in Brooklyn where I’ve experienced some of the best moments of my career,” said Garcia. “Fans have been asking for this fight for so long and on April 11 I’m planning on giving them the show they’ve been waiting for. Doing it live on NBC will make it even sweeter.”

“This is an amazing opportunity for me fighting in Brooklyn and on national TV in front of millions of people,” said Peterson. “I’m going to go out there and give the performance of a lifetime. Danny Garcia better not underestimate me, because my time is now.”

“I’m looking forward to returning to New York and defending my title against Quillin,” said Lee. “I’m at the peak of my powers now. I cannot see myself losing to anyone. I want to be recognized as the best middleweight in the world and beating Quillin will go some way to proving that.”

“To be able to fight at home in Brooklyn and win a title on such a big stage is a dream come true,” said Quillin. “I’m honored and excited to be a part of something that is great for my career, but also for the sport of boxing as a whole. I know that I’m going to win on April 11, become champion once again, and then I’m going after anyone and everyone at 160 pounds.”

“I am thrilled to be promoting this PBC mega event at Barclays Center in my hometown of Brooklyn,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “Danny Garcia vs. Lamont Peterson and Andy Lee defending his middleweight title against Peter Quillin are two of the very best bouts that can be made in boxing. On April 11, the fans are going to be the biggest winners and DBE is proud to be part of it.”

“Quality championship fights are only in Brooklyn in April,” said Brett Yormark, CEO of Barclays Center. “Danny Garcia always brings excitement to our ring and we are delighted once again to have Brooklyn’s own Peter Quillin fighting in Barclays Center. Fans want drama and unpredictable fights, and we are confident our card will deliver that on primetime television.”

Now in his fourth year as a world champion, Philadelphia’s Garcia will return to headline at Barclays Center for a record fourth time. Garcia also fought in the main event in October 2012, the first ever-boxing card at Barclays Center. The 26-year-old has taken down some of the biggest names in boxing on his way to an undefeated record, including Amir Khan, Erik Morales, Zab Judah and Lucas Matthysse. He will once again have a chance to prove himself against the best, this time in the long anticipated clash with Peterson.

Washington, D.C.’s Peterson is a gifted boxer-puncher with as much heart as talent. Like Garcia, the 31-year-old Peterson is another longtime champion. Peterson has always faced the best and defeated Amir Khan in 2011. The only blemishes on his perfect record came against Timothy Bradley and Lucas Matthysse. He is coming off of two impressive victories in 2014 and now he gets the bout he and the public have clamored for as he takes a shot at beating Garcia in Brooklyn.

An accomplished amateur who was Ireland’s sole boxing representative at the 2004 Olympic Games, Leegot his first taste of world championship gold in December 2014 when he defeated Matt Korobov for the vacant middleweight world title with a sensational sixth round technical knockout. The 30-year-old has fought in his home country of Ireland, the UK, Germany and most often in the U.S. throughout his career. His only career losses came against Bryan Vera, which he would later avenge and Julio Cesar Chavez in his first world title fight. On April 11, Lee will fight for the fifth time in New York City, looking to give the primetime national television audience a memorable night.

A former world champion looking to reclaim the belt he vacated last year, Quillin will return to the same arena where he won the middleweight belt in 2012 with his star-making, six-knockdown performance against Hassan N’Dam in the first boxing card hosted by Barclays Center. Born in Chicago but fighting out of New York City, the 31-year-old went on to defend that title against strong contenders Fernando Guerrero, Gabriel Rosado and Lukas Konecny. Now, “Kid Chocolate” looks to show off his superstar skills to a primetime audience.

Beginning with the first show, Saturday, March 7, at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC, NBC and NBCSN will present 20 live “PBC on NBC” boxing events in 2015. Within the 20 live shows, NBC Sports Group will present more than 50 hours of PBC coverage, including NBCSN pre- and post-fight programming for NBC telecasts. The Premier Boxing Champions series is created for television by Haymon Boxing. The PBC on NBC will feature many of today’s brightest stars, in their most compelling matches.

All PBC on NBC shows will be streamed live on NBC Sports Live Extra via “TV Everywhere,” giving consumers additional value for their subscription service, and making high quality content available to MVPD customers both in and out of the home and on multiple platforms. NBC Sports Live Extra is available for desktops at NBCSports.com/liveextra. The NBC Sports Live Extra app is available at the App Store for iPad and iPod touch, on select devices within Google Play, and on windows phones and tablets.

Garcia desroys Salka in 2!!

Danny Garcia
BROOKLYN–Unified Super Lightweight champion Danny Garcia did what he was supposed to do. That was destroy Rod Salka in 2 rounds at Barclay Center in a non-title bout.

After a 1st round that saw Garcia work the body, He came out in round two with full vengeance. He landed a boomimg right hand that buckled and ultimately dropped Salka. Salka get to his feet only to be dropped a 2nd time from a 3 more hard rights. Garcia continued to batter Salka until he landed a flush left hook that sent Salka down and out just as his corner threw in the towel at 2:38 round two.

Garcia, 141.75 lbs of Philadelphia is now 29-0 with 17 knockouts. Salka, 141 lbs of Bunola, PA is now 19-4.

“I came here to purge. I told everybody tonight was going to be the ‘Danny Garcia Show.’ No matter who I fought tonight, they were going to get beat. I was going to purge. I was out to kill.

“I didn’t think this was going to be an easy fight. I thought he’d try to box me. But it is not about the opponent. When I am at my best I can beat anybody and I already proved that.”

On a potential matchup with Lamont Peterson…“I leave it up to Al Haymon, but if he [Peterson] wants it. I’ll give it to him. I show up fight night and sometimes I have good nights or bad nights, but I always find a way to win.

After the fight Salka said, “I’m good. It wasn’t a tougher fight than I expected. I got caught with a shot. What am I going to do?”

LPetersonSantana_Hoganphotos
Lamont Peterson defended the IBF Jr. Welterweight title with a 10th round stoppage over Edgar Santana.

Not much happened in round’s one through three. The action picked up in round four as Santana landed a couple of hooks. Peterson came back in the 5th by landed a hard left that buckled Santana. He landed many more flush punches on the ropes but Santana took them. Peterson continued to land ripping shots in the middle of the ring but Santana stood sturdy.

The continued to battle on the inside. Santana had a few moments landing his body shots but Peterson landed more and harder and would mix body/head combinations as well as uppercuts.

In round ten, Peterson started to ramp up the attack and finally after a series of shots, Santana’s corner waved off the bout at 48 seconds of round 10.

Peterson, 140 lbs of Washington, DC is now 33-2-1 with 17 knockouts. Santana. 139.5 lbs of New York is now 29-5.

“I was able to show a lot of dimensions of my game,” said 30-year-old Peterson. “I was boxing well. I fought on the inside well. I actually think I should have gotten him out of there sooner but I give myself an okay grade.

“I think it was [round] four or five. I hurt him. I didn’t finish him. I don’t know why I didn’t but I knew I hurt him –and it was over– it was just a matter of time. I just had to get the right spot, push on the gas and go forward.”

On a potential fight with Danny Garcia…“This is the fight all the fans and the media want. I’m willing to do it. Again, I’m going to say this: ‘I’m willing to do it.’ Hopefully it gets done…It makes more sense to do it at 140 but if it has to happen at 147 I have no problem.”

On his feelings during his brother’s fight…”He [Anthony] did me a favor tonight…I had to fight but that’s my brother. I was a little nervous when he was in there. Good thing is he got him out of there in the first round so I didn’t have to worry about him for too long.”

“He came in with a good game plan. He’s tougher than I expected. His style frustrated me,” said Santana.

Danny Jacobs
Daniel Jacobs won the WBA Middleweight title with a 5th round stoppage of Australian Jarrod Fletcher.

It was almost over in round as Jacobs landed a left and rocked Fletcher for most of the first frame. Fletcher came back to have a nice round three.

Fletcher was having a good round five with his right hand until he ate a hard combination that sent him reeling. Jacobs jumped on Fletcher and landed a big left hook that sent Fletcher sprawling into the ropes and on to the canvas and the fight was stopped at 2:58 of round five.

Jacobs, 159 1/2 lbs of Brooklyn is now 28-1 with 25 knockouts. Fletcher, 159.25 lbs of Queensland, Australia is now 18-2.

Jim Gray asked Jacobs if he even thought about boxing when he was on his deathbed. “My son, my baby boy, was my first priority. But getting back into the ring was my second motivation. Boxing taught me to have the mental strength to overcome anything. And that’s what I did.”

“My advice [to others fighting cancer] is to be strong. But even if you can’t beat it, be happy. Be grateful that we even have this life.

“I wanted to pace myself. I didn’t want to punch myself out. I respected him. But I didn’t see any way that he could defeat me. I was sitting down on my punches and throwing in bunches. He was a tough customer. I hope he’s okay.

“I want to fight Peter Quillin in Brooklyn right here at the Barclays Center. The Brooklyn fans deserve it and it’s going to happen soon hopefully.

After the bout, Fletcher told Gray, “I’m good. I got caught with the shot. That’s boxing. I’m going to go back to the drawing board. He’s a good fighter. I’m disappointed in my performance. It is what it is.”

AliBryan_Hoganphotos
Sadam Ali survived an anxious moment but remained undefeated by pounding out a 10-round split decision over Jeremy Bryan in a Welterweight battle

Bryan rocked Ali in round four to the point where he buckled and almost went down. It was at the end of the round so he could not capitalize on it. Ali said, “I knew it wouldn’t be easy. I never underestimated him. I just wanted to feel strong in the ring. My legs were kind of not there, but I was good mentally. I just have to work around it.

“I just didn’t feel myself. This all falls back on my performance. I just happened to get the decision and I’m ready to go back to the gym and work on a few things. Whatever Golden Boy has planned for me is what I’m going to do.

“[The fans are] my motivation. That’s what gives me the power. I just want to perform better next time. You’ll see a better Sadam Ali.”

OchoaCervantes_Hoganphotos
Zachary Ochroa fought a tough fight but won a 6-round unanimous decision over Luis Cervantes in a Super Lightweight fights.

Both guys gace as good as they got in spots as Cervantes tried to rough up Ochoa in the corner but Ochoa was able to use his boxing ability to win by scores of 60-54 twice and 59-55.

Ochoa, 140 lbs of Brooklyn is now 8-0. Cervantes, 139.6 lbs of Palm Springs, CA is now 7-8-3.

“I knew he was going to come out tough, he’s a veteran so as soon as I got in there I took my time,” said Ochoa. “My legs cramped up a little bit but hey, I’m at Barclays Center let me give everybody a show. I dug down and I fought my heart out.

“I just have to go to the gym and keep working at my craft. I’m only 21 and I’m still learning.”

Anthony Peterson
Former Lightweight title challenger Anthony Peterson destroyed Edgar Riovalle in round one of their scheduled 10-round bout.

Peterson floored Riovalle with a hard right to the chin and the fight was stopped at 2:41 of round one.

Peterson, 137 lbs of Washington, DC is now 34-1 with 22 knockouts. Riovalle, 144.4 lbs of Mexico City, MX is now 37-19-2.

“Tonight was a demonstration of the rust being taken off,” said A. Peterson. “I just caught him with a good shot. It’s boxing. It could have been me. Sometimes it’s the calculation of punches. You can misjudge a punch. He just got caught.”

BrowneVazquez_Hoganphotos
2012 U.S Olympian Marcus Browne needed just 28 seconds to dispose of Paul Vazquez in their scheduled 10-round Light Heavyweight bout.

Browne landed a flurry of punches and the bout was stopped just as a body shot put Vazquez on the canvas.

Browne, 176.4 lbs of Staten Island, NY is now 12-0 with knockouts. Vazquez, 174.2 lbs of Oakland, CA is now 10-6-1.

“We knew he wasn’t supposed to be in the ring with me so we took care of him and handled our business. I caught him with a straight left and then he crumbled. I’m happy with my performance. You see me smiling don’t you?”

ColonDozier_Hoganphotos

LIGHT WELTERWEIGHT KING GARCIA EYES PETERSON WORLD TITLE UNIFICATION BUT MUST FIRST PASS SALKA TEST THIS SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE ON BOXNATION

Danny Garcia
LONDON (Aug 8) – Light welterweight kingpin Danny Garcia is hoping to set up a unification clash with IBF champion Lamont Peterson later this year.

The reigning WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine world champion takes on Rod Salka this Saturday night, live on BoxNation, and aims to come through the challenge unscathed so he can set up a mouth-watering showdown with Peterson.

The Washington native Peterson is also set to appear on the bill at the Barclays Center in New York this weekend, with Garcia aware victory for both is likely to see them in opposite corners next time around.

“At the end of the day, it’s what I want [a fight with Peterson] because I can say what I want, but you know, right now, I’ve got August 9, so I can’t look past anybody,” said Garcia.

“The same with Lamont Peterson, he can’t look past Edgar Santana. At the end of the day, we’ve both got to get these victories and at the end of the year or the beginning of next year we could do a unification bout,” he said.

The 26-year-old Garcia has taken some flak at his choice of opponent this time around as he steps in with the unheralded Salka, who has a record of 19 wins with three defeats.

However, the Philadelphia pugilist is refusing to underestimate his opponent, well aware that an upset could be on the cards if he isn’t at his best.

“I’ve got to go in there and be smart. I can’t make mistakes. I’ve got to stay sharp. I’ve got to stay composed. I’ve got to work on my jab, I’ve got to move my head and I’ve got to go in there and seek and destroy and look like a champion,” said Garcia.

“I think it’s very important for me to go out there and look good on Saturday. I’ve got to go in there and look like a champion. I’ll fight at the Barclays Center. I love the atmosphere there. It’s a beautiful arena. I’m very motivated.

“I did everything right this camp. I haven’t made a lot of mistakes sparring, so I’m looking good. I’m looking sharp and come August 9 there’s going to be another excellent performance and I’m going to go in there and try to give my fans a knockout,” he said.

The bout will be a catchweight at 142 pounds, with the 31-year-old Salka believing that Garcia will not let doubts about his choice of opponent affect him come fight night.

“Honestly, at this level I don’t really feel like anybody listens. None of the fighters are really taking any kind of praise and any of that stuff. Like Danny says, at the end of the day, we’re two guys with two hands and we’re going to go in there and we’re going to fight,” said Salka.

“It really doesn’t matter what anybody is saying because that’s the facts. So, absolutely not, I don’t think there’s any more pressure. We feel pressure going in there to fight regardless.

“It’s what we do, it’s what we do every day, it’s what we train to do, it’s what we’ve trained to do for years. It’s going to be an awesome night and we’re going to go in there and handle our business and we’re going to get it on August 9,” he said.

The night’s action also sees Peterson square off with Puerto Rican hitter Santana, with middleweight Danny Jacobs – one of modern boxing’s great comeback stories after overcoming a rare form of bone cancer – competing in his hometown for his first world title against Jarrod Fletcher, with the WBA belt up for grabs.

Garcia vs. Salka is live on BoxNation (Sky 437/490HD & Virgin 546) this Saturday night. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

“I ran hundreds of miles and sparred hundreds of rounds; this is the opportunity of a lifetime for Rod Salka and he knows what’s at stake, but I trained like this is my last fight and I overlook nobody.

“All of the fights I’ve been in have prepared me for this fight and to be the person I am today. I feel like a young vet. I’m going to come here Saturday night and handle my business. We’re going to call it the ‘Danny Garcia Show’ – ‘The Purge’.

“My dad is my main motivation. If my dad can beat cancer, there’s nothing I can’t beat. That’s my main motivation and that’s the hunger and the fire in my heart.

“I’m a boxer because I love to fight. It’s in my heart. Sometimes I win a fight and I forget to pick up my check. That’s how much I love boxing.”

ANGEL GARCIA, Garcia’s Father & Trainer

“Danny is ready. We had a 100% camp. In sparring he wasn’t even getting hit. I don’t know about that Puerto Rico ‘bad image.’ We didn’t lose sleep

“Salka is in the wrong predicament right now because that bad image made Danny a better fighter. Danny is 100 percent. The fight is going to be a great fight. I don’t care what the people say.

“They’re calling Danny ‘cherry picker, blackberry picker’ but it doesn’t matter because he still has to go out there and get his (victory). I told him to be a fighter. Nobody ever gave him anything … my job is not to worry about Salka. It’s to worry about Danny Garcia.

“It’s going to be called the ‘Danny ‘Swift’ Garcia Show.’ This is going to be the Fight of the Year.

“I had atage four cancer. Nothing was ever given to me. I was dying. They gave me six months to live – throat cancer at that. I had to live through a feeding tube for two years. That makes Danny who he is today! A fighter!.”

ROD SALKA, Super Lightweight Contender

“The talking is done. We’ve been talking about this too long and I’m sick of it.

“The fight is on Saturday so be ready to come out and see a great fight. Whatever is going to happen is going to happen and I’ll talk to you guys after the fight.

“I trained hard in California University of Pennsylvania. I’ve been training there ever since I was a student. It’s like a second home and helped prepare me for this fight.

“The road to get here has been a long time coming. I never thought I would be in this position and here I am.

“When I first started boxing, it was all about survival and staying in the game. I did everything from serving tables, and other jobs so that I could make money and keep the dream alive of getting to this day.”

LAMONT PETERSON, IBF Junior Lightweight Contender

“It’s fight week. We all know what time it is and I just want to say I’m ready.”

EDGAR SANTANA, Junior Lightweight Contender

“I had a great camp. I didn’t only train to win the fight, I trained to endure whatever Lamont has to bring. Expect a good fight from me.

“I’m a man of few words but I’m going to be ready on Saturday.”

DANIEL JACOBS, Middleweight Contender

“God is good. It’s a pleasure to be back. This is my home. I fought here twice before and the love I get here in this building is tremendous

“My late trainer Victor Roundtree passed away and can’t be with us for this special moment so this fight is dedicated to his memory.

“I just want to thank Jarrod Fletcher for giving me this opportunity and to come over here and fight half way across the world – actually all the way across the world. He’s a gentleman and I have a lot of respect for him.

“It’s been very special to get my story to reach the masses and inspire millions across the world. And if I do win, I will be the first cancer survivor to be world champion.”

JARROD FLETCHER, Middleweight Contender

“This has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid and it’s been 20 years in the making. I’m fighting Danny Jacobs who is quite the man — and has got a great story about him.

“It’s been a long road but I can’t wait for Saturday night. This is my chance and I’m going to take it.”

SADAM ALI, Undefeated Welterweight & 2008 U.S. Olympian

“I’ve been working hard and I’m ready to perform on Saturday night.

“I’m not only excited about performing myself, but I’m excited about watching everyone else on the card perform.

“Thank you for all the support and I’ll see you Saturday night.”

ANTHONY PETERSON, Lightweight Contender

“Everyone on the card knows it’s going to be a great event on Saturday night. Lamont (Peterson), you know what we do, we are going to go in there and handle our business and be done with it.”

ZACHARY OCHOA, Undefeated Super Lightweight Prospect

“I’m excited to be here at Barclays Center today and especially on Saturday. I’m ready to fight and I’ve been training hard.

“For the past month Golden Boy Promotions has been doing a hell of a job. It’s an honor for me to be fighting on this card with all of these fighters. I can’t wait.”

ERIC GOMEZ, Vice President of Golden Boy Promotions

“We’re very happy to be here once again in Brooklyn at Barclays Center. I think we have a terrific card for everyone

“Barclays Center is quickly becoming the capital for championship boxing here on the East Coast.

“Danny Garcia is one of the most exciting fighters in the sport. He comes to win. He comes to knock you out. He has been fighting his whole life. Danny has proven himself every time he gets in the ring. He was supposed to lose to Erik Morales, he knocked him out, he was supposed to lose to Amir Khan, he knocked him out. He was supposed to lose to Zab Judah and he beat him.

“These are the toughest fights. Not only to be a world champion but you have to be able to prove you belong. That is all Danny does. Proves he belongs every single fight.

“People have had their own opinions about the main event. This will be an exciting fight. I’ve never seen Danny Garcia in a boring fight and this is Rod Salka’s time to fight. Ever since we’ve worked with Rod Salka, he’s always wanted to fight the best. He is going to take full advantage. He’s been working very hard for this fight. It’s do or die for him. When you have those elements it makes for a great fight.”

BRETT YORMARK, CEO of Barclays Center

“We’re thrilled to host another great night of boxing Saturday night; Oscar and his team have assembled a great fight card.

“I’m excited to see Danny Garcia back at Barclays Center; this is definitely his home away from home.

“I want to recognize Daniel Jacobs. I’m thrilled about what he’s going to do in front of his home crowd in Brooklyn on Saturday night. It was just a few years ago when Daniel was in the hospital and his promising boxing career was put on hold. He persevered and in many respects I believe Barclays Center served as an inspiration for him and on Saturday night, Brooklyn’s ‘Miracle Man’ fights here for a world title.

“Daniel Jacobs, you epitomize everything that Brooklyn is about and I thank you for calling Barclays Center home.

“This is our eighth boxing event with Golden Boy and we thank them for their commitment to bringing great fights to Barclays Center. I’d also like to think SHOWTIME for their continued dedication to showcasing Brooklyn boxing.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, EVP & General Manager of SHOWTIME Sports

“People have said and written that they know how these fights are going to end. But
boxing matches are fought in the ring. We must remember that these young men have been training for hours and weeks and months for this opportunity. They will be performing on the biggest stage for boxing in New York City and perhaps one of the biggest stages for boxing in the entire world.

“No other venue has made the commitment to boxing that Brett Yormark and Barclays Center have. All of us at SHOWTIME commend Brett and his team for that.

“Rod Salka is a very entertaining fighter and I’m not going to be surprised at all when it is a very competitive fight. That is not a knock on Danny Garcia. This is the opportunity of Rod Salka’s lifetime and he is taking it very seriously.

“It doesn’t matter what people say or what people write. There is a lot at stake this Saturday. No one at this stage is taking anything for granted.”

GREG COHEN, Jarrod Fletcher’s Promoter

“I’ve been working with Jarrod Fletcher for the past couple of years. I’ve been in this game a long time and he might be my most favorite fighter that I’ve ever worked with.

“Jarrod is a rare guy that’s a true professional who is always prepared and does everything right. He is what is good about this sport.

“A lot of people don’t know who Jarrod is. He’s a two-time Olympian and he has all of the pedigree that you could ever dream of to become a world champion and there is no doubt in my mind that on Saturday night Jarrod Fletchers hand will be raised in victory as the new WBA champion of the world.”

DAVID BERLIN, Executive Director New York State Athletic Commission

“Even with a non-title fight as its headliner, for fans that know the sport it’s not about the titles, it’s always about the fight. Danny Garcia vs. Rod Salka promises to be a fight that pleases the fans. I credit Golden Boy for putting a non-title fight at the top of their card.

“Rod Salka is a fighter that comes to fight and we have the great Pennsylvania rivalry of Philadelphia against Pittsburgh.

“I’m a strong supporter of New York fighters and I’m thrilled that Edgar Santana and Daniel Jacobs have shots at world titles here in Brooklyn.”

FIGHTERS ON THE “DANNY GARCIA VS. ROD SALKA” FIGHT CARD MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

Danny Garcia
BROOKLYN (Aug. 6, 2014) – Fight week is heating up as Danny “Swift” Garcia, “Lightning” Rod Salka, Lamont Peterson, Edgar “El Camacho” Santana, Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs, Jarrod “Left Jab” Fletcher and undercard fighters hosted a media workout at Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, N.Y., today as they prepare for their bouts this Saturday, Aug. 9 at Barclays Center live on SHOWTIME®.

The fighters put on their gear and showed off their skills in the ring after speaking to the assembled media members at Gleason’s Gym. Here is what the participants had to say:

DANNY GARCIA, Unified Super Lightweight World Champion

“It feels great to be here. I love the atmosphere in Brooklyn and I can’t wait for Saturday night. I’m calling it the ‘Danny Garcia Show.’ Team Garcia is going to ‘purge’ Barclays Center.

“I’m 100 percent focused this time. My weight is good and I’m going to do what I’m supposed to do.

“I don’t know why Salka is being underestimated by fans. At the end of the day the fans can think what they want to think, but I know what I bring to the table. I bring excitement. I bring fun and I’m going to get the job done.

“Salka is going to give it his all, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for him to fight one of the young stars in boxing. He has nothing to lose. I’m going to have to hunt him down and rip the body, but I’m prepared for anything.

“I’ve been facing top competitors for a long time, but sometimes you get a little over your head. I didn’t prepare myself as well as I should have mentally in Puerto Rico. All the people in Puerto Rico were great, but it was a little hard to stay focused. Every fight can’t be easy.

“Puerto Rico was a great experience, but I’m happy to be fighting near my home. I love fighting here. There’s something about this atmosphere here that motivates me. They support not only the Puerto Ricans but I have all kinds of crowds behind me at Barclays Center.”

ROD SALKA, Super Lightweight Contender

“I’d have laughed with you if you told me six months ago I’d have this fight. But a lot of things happen over time in boxing and that’s one of the beautiful things about it. You win some fights and catch a couple breaks and the opportunities open up.

“My style is going to be the same against Danny as it always is. I am what I am. He’s going to be the bigger guy but that doesn’t make any difference to me. I’m going to do what I do and he’s going to have to adjust to that.

“I never listen to the outside noise. If confidence is a problem for you at this level, you’re not going to make it very far. I block all of that out and live in the moment and further my career.

“I’m going to beat the best 140-pounder in the world Saturday night, no doubt about it.

“You can’t be any more motivated than I am for this fight. I know I’m deserving of this shot and we’ll see what happens when we’re in the ring.

“I don’t think Garcia is underestimating me. I don’t think he would anyway, but especially after the (Mauricio) Herrera fight he even more feels like he has something to prove. I think I’m going to get the best Danny Garcia we’ve seen in a long time.

“I’ll watch all of my fights one hundred times because I can control what I’m doing right all the time, but he can change it up from last time. So I can’t put too much stock into his last fight.

“I’m going to shock the world by winning, winning decisively and proving that I belong. Not just for one night but that I belong for a very long time.”

LAMONT PETERSON, IBF Junior Welterweight World Champion

“I feel good right now, I just want to build on my last victory and keep going forward trying to improve every time out.

“I’m really excited to be fighting in New York and Barclays Center is a beautiful venue. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to make my mark there.

“Santana is an experienced fighter, he’s been doing it even longer than me and if he’s still in the game it means he’s doing something right. He’s a typical fighter and he can bang. I expect a good fight.

“There are ups and downs in the sport. The last loss was tough but I don’t get too down. Everything changed the last fight and hopefully we can build on that. I want to give the fans the fight they want to see.

“I just like doing things the right way. I’m an all-in type of person. If I do something I want to do it the right way all the way through.

“I treat every opponent the same way because I don’t listen to the media. Whether they say I’m going to win or going to lose, either way I have to go out there and prove what I can do. I listen to the coach and stick to the game plan and go from there.”

EDGAR SANTANA, Junior Welterweight Contender

“Right now I’m feeling great. All of the hard work is done. Right now it’s time to let the body recover and wait until it pays off on Saturday night.

“I know Peterson is good. He’s a champion. He likes to fight and he lets his pride take over.

“All I have to do is let my hands go. I’m in shape and I just have to make it a fight.”

DANIEL JACOBS, Middleweight Contender

“Being at home doesn’t give me motivation to go for a knockout, just to get the victory. We’ve had a long hard training camp (in the Poconos) and I’m just looking forward to displaying my skills. If I do get him hurt. I will get him out of there.

“Given that his name is ‘Left Jab’ Fletcher that’s probably his marquee attribute. I’m going to try to stabilize that as best I can to get the victory.

“Young fighters should have the opportunity like I have doing commentary for SHOWTIME, so that they could do something like this in the future. They’ve had me on several times and I look forward to doing it in the near future.

“You can expect bigger and better things after this fight. God-willing I’ll be the first cancer survivor to be a world champion and I’m looking forward to being the best that I can be.”

JARROD FLETCHER, Middleweight Contender

“It’s going to be a tough fight, he’s heavily favored so I know I have to win the fight clearly. Danny is a good boxer and he has the full package. We’ve prepared well and we think we’re ready for him.

“Every boxer has weaknesses. I’ve done everything in my preparation to work on those things. I expect him to come out hard, but who knows? No one knows what is going to happen but I know I’m ready.

“I’m hoping this will be the start of big things. This has been a dream of mine since I started fighting at the age of 10. This is what it all comes down to.”

SADAM ALI, Undefeated Welterweight & 2008 U.S. Olympian

“I’m ready to perform at Barclays Center. I’m not overlooking anybody and I’m prepared for the challenge. I do feel safe at Barclays Center. It’s my home, I get a lot of support there and it’s very important to me.

“I’m going to make the statement that I’m ready for the next level. I want to take that next step, I’m excited for it.

“There are a few things that (Jeremy) Bryan does that I’m working on. I’m working on adding more speed and power plus using my body a little more. It’s a big fight and I’m here to win.”

ANTHONY PETERSON, Lightweight Contender

“As a fighter, I’ve gotten more patient and I have a better grip of my emotions now. You can have all of the tools but if you don’t have the emotions to hold everything together, what good are you?

“Being around boxing for 20 years, there’s a comfort level you reach. There’s nothing the boxing ring can show me.

“It doesn’t matter that I don’t know much about my opponent, it just matters that I know the game. He’s not going to be 10 feet tall and 1,300 pounds. He’s going to be my size, he’s got a heartbeat so we got a fight.

“It’s easy to make adjustments because I have better speed and I’m younger and fresher. I’ve got a great coach, so if I’m falling off I know he’s going to be there to tell me what I’m missing. Now it’s just getting ready for Saturday night.”

ZACHARY OCHOA, Undefeated Super Lightweight Prospect

“You can expect to see me doing what I have to do to get the win and putting on a show for everyone who comes out to support me at Barclays Center. It’s going to be a beautiful evening.

“I know (Luis) Cervantes has 17 fights, he’s a tough guy with more fights than me. I’m going to take my time and do my thing.

“If I see the opportunity to take him out with a knockout I will, but if it doesn’t come I’ll box and get the win.”

MARCUS BROWNE, Undefeated Light Heavyweight & 2012 U.S. Olympian

“I’m sharp as a razor blade, it’s been a great camp and we’ve gotten lots of great rounds in with Edwin Rodriguez.

“All I know about (Paul) Vazquez is he’s a man, he’s a righty and he’s coming to take my ‘O’.

“I’m going to go in there to have some fun. If the knockout comes, it comes.”

Brooklyn born and raised Sadam “World Kid” Ali (19-0, 12 KOs) has been on a tear since his Golden Boy Promotions debut at Barclays Center against Jay Krupp in September of 2013. Since then, the 25-year-old 2008 U.S. Olympian has halted Jesus Selig and Michael Clark to run his perfect record to 19-0. Jeremy Bryan (17-3, 7 KOs), of Paterson, N.J., was a decorated amateur who won two National Golden Gloves titles and owns a victory in the amateurs over headliner Danny Garcia. The 28-year-old Bryan has won three of his last four bouts, most recently defeating Yuir Ramanau and Issouf Kinda.

“I feel fortunate to have my first title defense in the heart of Brooklyn. Fighting at home brings the best out of me,” said Ali, who’s defending his title for the first time at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. “I’ve been working hard since I was eight-years-old. I’m climbing the ladder, and with every victory I’m step closer to my dream, a shot to a world title.”

The brother of IBF Junior Welterweight World Champion Lamont Peterson, lightweight contender Anthony Peterson (33-1, 21 KOs) hopes to add his own title belt to the family trophy case in the coming year, but first he’ll have to add to his three-fight winning streak against an opponent to be announced.. Owner of wins over Daniel Attah, Dominic Salcido and Marcos Leonardo Jimenez, the 29-year-old Washington, D.C. product is currently ranked 12th in the world by the IBF, and he’s expecting to climb higher with a triumph in his upcoming bout.

“I’m excited and honored to have my fight televised on SHO EXTREME and from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Those are two firsts for me,” said Lamont Peterson’s younger brother, Anthony. “Boxing is my life. It’s in my blood. It’s the only thing I live for and I couldn’t ask for more. Fighting in a world class arena in a televise bout and sharing the card with my brother…that’s the dream.”

Proudly representing his borough of Brooklyn will be super lightweight prospect Zachary Ochoa (7-0, 4 KOs). Appearing at Barclays Center for the third time, the 22-year-old Ochoa has showed style and savvy throughout his young career. He’ll face Luis Cervantes (7-7-3, 2 KOs), of Palm Springs, Calif., in a four-rounder on Aug. 9.

As he approaches his record seventh appearance at Barclays Center, 2012 U.S. Olympian “Sir” Marcus Browne (11-0, 8 KOs) is becoming synonymous with boxing’s newest Mecca. Unbeaten as a professional, including four victories by knockout at Barclays Center, the Staten Island native has shown that there’s nothing like fighting in his own backyard. The up-and-coming light heavyweight will make his 10-round debut against Paul Vazquez (10-5-1, 3 KO’s), of Oakland, Calif.

Puerto Rico’s latest star on the rise, Orocovis’ Prichard Colon (10-0, 10 KOs) has been devastating winning all his fights inside the distance. Just 21-years-old, Colon, who will face Washington, D.C,’s Lenwood Dozier (9-6-1, 4 KO’s) in an eight-round junior middleweight bout, is sure to thrill the fans in his New York City debut.

Joining the Peterson brothers in representing the D.C. area, 21-year-old super middleweight phenom D’mitrius Ballard (5-0, 4 KOs) will open the show in a six-round bout against Hayti, Montana’s Barry Trotter (2-1, 1 KO). A ferocious finisher with power in both hands, Ballard is coming off a second-round technical knockout over Quincy Miner in April.

DANNY GARCIA, ROD SALKA, LAMONT PETERSON, EDGAR SANTANA AND DANIEL JACOBS MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Danny and Angel Garcia
Kelly Swanson
Thanks, everybody for joining us. We have five of the fighters participating on the Saturday, August 9 event at Barclays Center and SHOWTIME on the call with us today. That includes Danny Garcia, Rod Salka, Lamont Peterson, Edgar Santana and Daniel Jacobs.

We’re going to start the call with Daniel Jacobs and then move into Edgar Santana and Lamont Peterson and then wrap it up with Danny Garcia and Rod Salka. So, I’m going to turn it over now to Oscar De La Hoya, president and founder of Golden Boy Promotions to make the introductions.

Oscar De La Hoya
Thank you very much, Kelly. Yes, we are very excited. We are getting closer to the great night of fights that we will be having at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. As you know the main event is Danny Garcia vs. Rod Salka, which will be a 10-round welterweight fight. The co-main event, Lamont Peterson vs. Edgar Santana will be a 12-round bout for Peterson’s IBF Junior Welterweight World Championship.

The fight we’ll be talking about now is Daniel Jacobs vs. Jarrod Fletcher. That will be a 12-rounder for the WBA Middleweight World Title. We are happy to be in association with DiBella Entertainment. We are also happy to announce that Daniel Jacobs vs. Jarrod Fletcher is being promoted in association with Greg Cohen Promotions.

Thank you very much to our sponsors Corona and AT&T. There are tickets still available. We priced them very reasonably because we know that having a packed house at the Barclays Center, there’s no experience like it when you hear the thunderous crowd going wild watching the great fights that we’ve had in the past and is no exception.

Prices start at $25 and we work our way up for ringside seats at $250. I would like to thank everyone for making this possible, Showtime, to all the sponsors and all the participants. The first gentleman that I will be introducing to you, to the media, they call him the “Miracle Man” and the “Miracle Man” for a reason.

He is from Brooklyn, New York. We all know him for his dazzling footwork plus his speed and combinations. He has a tremendous record of 27-1 and 24 KOs. He is, perhaps, one of the most inspirational figures, not only in boxing, but in any sport today. He’s really excited to be fighting for a world title in Brooklyn, his hometown. We feel excited about showcasing once again.

Daniel Jacobs
Hey, guys, how are you? All is well. I’m very excited. This is an opportunity of a lifetime for me, being back at after another tremendous knockout and I plan to continue that streak. Although I’m not predicting a knockout I do believe I’ll be able to get the victory on fight night and it’s going to exciting. I’m very excited.

O. De La Hoya
Thank you very much, Daniel. And we can now open it up for questions from the media, thank you.

Q
Could you ever have imagined that you’d be in a position like you’ll be next Saturday to not only fight in your hometown arena, but also to get in the ring and challenge for a belt?

D. Jacobs
Absolutely not. That was the furthest thing in my mind. I had hopes and aspirations of one day again being able to get back to the ring at the Barclays Center. Once I found out that the Barclays Center would have a fight, that was my biggest drive and my biggest motivation was to just participate there in that first event, that inaugural event.

But to have this opportunity to have a world championship a year and a half, two years later I never would have thought this would be possible, let alone to happen in my backyard. To be able to perform in front of my fans and my family who have been there during my struggles, this is an opportunity of a lifetime. Seriously, I really can’t wait for fight night. It’s going to be like a dream come true for me.

Q
Do you think that you and members of your family are going to be able to contain the emotion after everything that you have been through in the last couple of years?

D. Jacobs
Absolutely not. I think about it all the time. I envision melf with my hand being raised and, of course, your vision is the announcer saying, “And the new…” I get emotional just thinking about it. So, for me that night and for my family, that will be a night to remember if we have our hand raised in victory. And it will be historical. I never would have dreamed of this opportunity to have in the fight for the WBA Championship in my backyard. This is truly an honor.

Q
What’s the difference between the Daniel Jacobs that perhaps was a little green to be fighting in your previous championship opportunity compared to the Daniel Jacobs of today who, even though you were ill and gone through a lot physically, to be on track to get in the fight next Saturday?

D. Jacobs
Well, I think I’m a lot wiser in how I train and how I conduct my training camp and the fact that I had to alter my diet for the cancer allowed me to have a healthier body and healthier lifestyle to be able to maintain a good training camp and maintain a good body to be able to perform at an elite level.

At that time I wouldn’t say I took it for granted, but I don’t think I had the best training for that particular fight. I’m a lot wiser, I’m a lot stronger and my mental state is at an all-time high, especially going through what I’ve gone through I feel like I’m not invincible, but I also feel like the only person that could stop me inside that ring is myself.

Q
Do you have any thoughts or opinions about the fact that whoever wins the fight next Saturday is going to get handed a belt that another guy really has a claim to and that basically you’re the secondary champion of that particular organization or does that not make a difference because they’re giving you a title?

D. Jacobs
It doesn’t matter to me. I mean, a champion is a champion. A secondary champion or the first champion it doesn’t matter to me. I have an opportunity to fight for a world championship. It’s not my job to make the belt. It’s not my job to put myself in a position to fight for the belt. It’s just my job to really go in there and just be ready to fight whoever they put in front of me and whatever title we get, I’m very grateful for it.

Whether they call me a paper champion or a real champion, I am the champion because each and every time I go inside that ring I give it my all and that’s pretty much all I have to say about that.

Q
What do you know about Jarrod Fletcher and how do you deal with his style if you know anything about it?

D. Jacobs
Initially I really didn’t know too much about his style so I had to YouTube some of his fights to get a gist of how he fights and his movements and things of that nature. To me it seems as if he’s an in-and-out type of guy, his nickname is “Left Jab” and I can tell that he uses that a lot from looking at his fights.

I know he plans on boxing and moving and using the combinations and going the full 12 rounds come August 9. But for the most part, myself as a champion I feel like what a champion does is adjust to any style. I’ve had over 150 amateur fights and I fought all different types of styles from the national to international level, so I don’t think that there’s going to be anything in there that he could project that I haven’t seen thus far and if there is, it’s just my job and my duty to go ahead and adjust and do my best to get the victory.

Q
How much pressure is there for you from a personal standpoint to continue performing at Barclays Center and to look good given that you could be fighting a guy who could make the fight look ugly?

D. Jacobs
Well, I just have to be a superhero that night. I’ve trained and through my training we gave it our all and we always put it in the back of my mind that I have to be a superhero and that I have to perform at an elite level. So, that’s already instilled in my mind.

There’s no pressure, there’s not a lot of pressure for me to go out there and try to knock the guy out. I have the ability to box, I have the ability to move and I do have the ability also that if I hurt someone I can get the job done and get them out of there. So, I’m just looking forward to putting on a show, whether it’s a full 12 rounds of just hands flying, combinations, putting punches together or if it’s a devastating knockout, but I look forward to going in there and giving it my best and I believe my best will give me the victory.

Q
Are you a believer in destiny, that all things happen for a reason and that this is the real story that needs to be told in your career?

D. Jacobs
Absolutely. I’m a believer of that 100 percent. We have our own plans and we have our own goals set up for us, but it don’t roll out the way we see, but we just have to stick through it. And I do feel like everything that I’ve been through God is molding me to be all that I could be, possibly August 9, and that’s a world champion.

I do feel like that loss wasn’t in vain and I do feel like this is all molding me and setting me up to be a superhero come August 9 and further from there. So, it’s an opportunity of a lifetime and I look forward to taking full advantage of it.

Q
What are your thoughts on the possibility of fighting Golovkin in the immediate future?

D. Jacobs
I think it will be huge. But for me, how I look at it is I’ll just be the champ, I’ll just be being crowned champ, it’s an opportunity that I would love to have to fight him. I also think that he’s already a superstar and I think I want to have the opportunity to be a superstar myself. So, I think that if I can maybe get a couple of fights, maybe Peter Quillin or someone like that and then go up to Golovkin, that’s something that I would look forward to doing.

But initially right after the win, I mean, I’m not really in control of who I fight. But if I had it my way I would probably get me a couple of fights just to solidify that spot and to secure my name and be considered a superstar in the division and a big play in the division as well so we can go ahead and make the fight the way we both can get what we deserve for that particular fight.

Q
What did you think of Golovkin’s performance Saturday night?

D. Jacobs
I think his performance was great. I think what everyone else thinks. I think that the hype is real only in the sense that he’s doing what he’s supposed to do. Whether or not I believe in the hype, that’s a different story. I see flaws in his game, but his power is tremendous and Mike Tyson used to say you can have all the game plan in the world until you get hit and that changes your whole perspective.

You definitely have to be aware of his power, but I do see a whole lot of flaws in his game as far as his defense and his ability just to deflect and his ability to move his feet and being flat-footed. So, if there is a possibility that we can fight I’ll look forward to it.

Q
What do you know about Fletcher? What does he do well, especially for people who haven’t really seen much of him and what do you think of his ability?

D. Jacobs
I think the key thing that he does well is use his jab and he moves pretty good with his combinations. But he’s definitely something that I haven’t seen before and he’s going to try to box and use his movement.

O. De La Hoya
Once again, the co-main event, which we’re really excited about as we are with all the fights, Lamont Peterson vs. Edgar Santana, which will be 12 rounds for the IBF Junior Welterweight Championship. On the phone now he is from New York City, New York. He is unbeaten in eight of his last nine bouts and he is the current NABF Champion. Obviously, he’ll be getting his long awaited shot at a world title.

He does hold wins over Josesito Lopez, who is a very tough champion contender. He also holds wins over Grover Wiley and Luis Hernandez. So, let me introduce to you now, who will be fighting for a world title against Lamont Peterson on August 9, a gentleman they call “El Chamaco” from New York City, New York with a record of 29-4 and 20 KOs, Edgar “El Chamaco” Santana.

Edgar Santana
I’m feeling great. I’m feeling hyped. You know what, I’ve been training hard and even before I got the call I’ve been in the gym so I’m going to be more than ready come August 9. I’m going to give the fans a fight they’re looking for, which is an exciting fight and two fighters giving it their all that night.

O. De La Hoya
Okay, perfect. Thank you. Also now let me introduce to you the Champion. He is the IBF Junior Welterweight World Champion. He hails out of Washington, D.C. As we all know, he has also a very inspirational and difficult upbringing. Inspirational because of where he comes from and how he got to the top, through hard work and perseverance.

He has tremendous wins against great fighters like Amir Khan and Kendall Holt. He’s coming off some great wins and on August 9 he knows he has a very tough fight in front of him, but he is more than ready and willing to shine in front of all the fans at the Barclays Center.

So, let me introduce to you the Champion with a record of 32-2 with 16 KOs out of Washington, D.C., Lamont Peterson.

Lamont Peterson
Hello, everybody. How are you doing? I’m feeling great, trying to keep working hard and just ready to fight August 9.

Q
I think a lot of people thought that you might be fighting Danny Garcia, who is in the main event on next Saturday. What were your thoughts about that, that that’s not the fight, that you’re fighting Santana instead?

L. Peterson
Well, I fought that night, everyone that’s interviewing me; I let them know I wanted to fight Danny Garcia next because that’s what the fans wanted to see. For me, if the fans want to see me fight someone, I’m going to push for that fight, so that’s what I did. But it just didn’t happen. At the end of the day I’m going to end up fighting a good fighter, Edgar Santana, and hopefully it can happen next time.

Q
Did you push hard for the Garcia fight and were you surprised that you couldn’t have your side get that fight done?

L. Peterson
It’s boxing. Everything has to make sense from that end. But, if I can win this fight, win or lose, that’s the fight that I want to happen. Of course, me winning the fight will make it more pleasing because I leave with my title and hopefully he leaves with his and maybe it can happen because it’s really the biggest fight you can make at the weight class, it’s the fight that the fans want to see at the weight class and I’m willing to do it.

Q
So, are you in a situation where if things go your way August 9 that you’ll finish up your fight with Edgar and come out to the ring and pay close attention to what Danny’s doing in his fight?

L. Peterson
Well, I’m not going to really pay close attention to it. I pretty much know Danny is a top fighter. He can handle himself at that level and I can handle myself at that level. So, I won’t be really focused on him or anything like that. The first thing I have to do is take care of my business and if I do that, then I’ll just be ready to celebrate and relax and get ready for the next one.

Q
What are your thoughts about getting the opportunity not only to win a world title, which most people would consider a big upset, but to also kind of wreck those plans?

E. Santana
Edgar, well, I’m happy to be the one. I guess they’ve picked me out of the bunch. I feel they committed a big mistake and I’m going to be ready to lay it all on the line that day. I’m going to be there to fight, no doubt about that.

Q
What do you say to all the critics who are not giving you a chance in this fight?

E. Santana
I’m going to prove everybody wrong. They made a big mistake in choosing me and I’m going to prove everybody wrong and this is for my family and this is for all Puerto Rico and all the Puerto Ricans. They made a big mistake.

Q
How does it feel fighting in New York for the first time in more than two years?

E. Santana
It’s a dream of mine. I want to thank SHOWTIME. I want to thank Oscar, yours truly. I’m ready to go and it’s a dream come true. So, I’m going to give it my all and I’m here to win.

Q
Is there anything that you personally want to demonstrate or feel that you need to demonstrate further to distance yourself from the loss to Lucas Matthysse?

L. Peterson
No, not really. It was just one of the nights in boxing. I’ve been told that from day one. So, I didn’t have anything to prove in that fight. Have nothing to prove now. At the end of the day, we’re all fighters. We go out there, we train hard, we give it our best and we go out there to win. That’s what I do all the time.

Q
How rejuvenating was it to go back home after that loss and to put on that kind of performance and to bring that momentum into this fight?

L. Peterson
I look at myself as one of the best in the weight class, so when I’ve taken in the victory, it was a good thing and I’m looking forward to another victory. I know Edgar is looking at himself as the underdog. I know a lot of you are putting him as the underdog.

But for me, I’m just going in there and look at it as another fight that I have to win. I know he’ll give it his all. This is his first title fight. I know how it is to finally get your shot and I know that he’s well prepared and be at your best. So, I’m looking for a great fight and may the best man win.

K. Swanson
We are now going to move to the final fight and the main event on the August 9show, Danny Garcia and Rod Salka. So, I’m going to turn it back over to Oscar to make the introductions.

O. De La Hoya
Thank you very much, Kelly. This fight, the main event, which all have been waiting for, Danny Garcia vs Rod Salka, which will be a 10-rounder in the Welterweight Division. At this time I would like to introduce to you, he hails from Bunola, Pennsylvania. He has a record of 19-3 with 3 KOs. They call him “Lightning” for a reason.

It’s great to introduce someone who is a proud United States Air Force veteran. He is here to win against Danny Garcia. He’s coming off a huge upset against highly touted Alexei Collado, which he handed Collado his very first professional loss April 18th and he expects to shock the world. He’s coming prepared. He’s ready.

Let me introduce to you from Bunola, Pennsylvania, Rod Salka.

Rod Salka
Thanks, Oscar. Training camp is going great. We’re up in the mountains in California, PA. Been up here for about seven weeks, it’ll be eight weeks by the time of the fight and we’re ready to rumble.

O. De La Hoya
Thank you very much. And now, let me introduce to you the champion. He has a record of 20-0 with 16 KOs and now in his third year as a world champion, Danny has made five successful title defenses. He won his first world title in March of 2012 by dropping and decisioning legendary Erik Morales for the WBC 140-pound title. He helped open Barclays Center for business with a one-punch knockout of Morales in the arena, which was a 2012 knockout of the year candidate.

He holds tremendous win over champions of very high caliber like Mauricio Herrera, the amazing Lucas Matthysse, which he put on a tremendous performance. Here you have a fighter who has been on the big stage, who is ready to perform, who is ready to go out there and once again put on a tremendous show for his fan base that keeps growing every single day. Let me introduce the Champion, Danny “Swift” Garcia.

Danny Garcia
I want to thank everybody on this conference call. Camp is going tremendous. I’ve been sparring hundreds of rounds. I’m running my miles every day. I’m very excited for this fight. I can’t wait to be back in the Barclays Center to give the fans my third performance at Barclays Center.

I had two great performances there already, with Morales and Zab Judah. I’m really motivated and, like I say, August 9 at the Barclays Center it’s the “Danny Garcia purge.”

Q
Why is the best fighter in the 140-lb division fighting a fighter with Salka’s type of resume?

D. Garcia
You know, I don’t pick my opponents. My manager Al Haymon does. And I never go against him. He picked the Khan fight, he picked the Matthysse fight, he picked the Zab Judah fight, he picked the Herrera fight, he picked all my fights. I never question him about his decisions. I just accept the fight and my job is to train hard and go in there August 9 and give the people at the Barclays Center a great performance and a good fight.

At the end of the day, my style brings out the best in my opponent, so I’m looking forward to an action-packed fight August 9 and I can’t wait.

Q
Was that Peterson fight one that you would prefer to have?

D. Garcia
At the end of the day, it’s what I want because I can say what I want, but you know, right now, I’ve got August 9, so I can’t look past anybody. The same with Lamont Peterson. He can’t look past Edgar Santana. At the end of the day, we’ve both got to get these victories and at the end of the year or the beginning of next year that we could do a unification bout.

Q
What’s your plan of attack against Salka, who does not have a lot of experience against the top level fighters?

D. Garcia
I’ve got to go in there and be smart. I can’t make mistakes. I’ve got to stay sharp. I’ve got to stay composed. I’ve got to work on my jab, I’ve got to move my head and I’ve got to go in there and seek and destroy and look like a champion.

Q
Is there a need or desire to win by knockout, to win spectacularly, perhaps similarly to the way you beat Morales in the rematch?

D. Garcia
I think it’s very important for me to go out there and look good August 9. I’ve got to go in there and look like a champion. I’ll fight at the Barclays Center. I love the atmosphere there. It’s a beautiful arena. I’m very motivated. I did everything right this camp. I haven’t made a lot of mistakes sparring, so I’m looking good. I’m looking sharp and come August 9 there’s going to be another excellent performance and I’m going to go in there and try to give my fans a knockout.

Q
How do you feel about the kind of the criticism that has been leveled against his fight?

D. Garcia
That’s the media’s problem. At the end of the day, he’s got two hands, I’ve got two hands and we’re going to fight. It’s a fight. It doesn’t matter who he is. He’s got two hands, I’ve got two hands and it’s going to be a fight. It doesn’t matter who they put in there. It’s going to be an excellent performance August 9, two guys going in there and giving their all and it’s going to be a great fight.

Q
Will you feel victorious if you go the distance and you give a good fight what does that do for your career, let alone winning?

R. Salka
I don’t care what that would do. I don’t have any other expectations other than coming in there and winning the fight. Having any other thoughts about that only distracts from the goal and the goal is to ignore that and win the fight. So, come August 9 I’m coming to win.

Q
Do you feel that there’s any extra pressure on Danny and, if so, is that something that you can take advantage of?

R. Salka
Honestly, at this level I don’t really feel like anybody listens. None of the fighters are really taking any kind of praise and any of that stuff. Like he says, at the end of the day, we’re two guys with two hands and we’re going to go in there and we’re going to fight. It really doesn’t matter what anybody is saying because that’s the facts. So, absolutely not, I don’t think there’s any more pressure.

We feel pressure going in there to fight regardless. It’s what we do, it’s what we do every day, it’s what we train to do, it’s what we’ve trained to do for years. And at the end of the day we’re going in there and we’re doing our job. So, there really is not pressure there, just a great atmosphere. It’s going to be an awesome night and we’re going to go in there and handle our business and we’re going to get it on August 9.

Q
In the event that both Danny Garcia and Lamont are victorious, is that a fight, as Danny referenced that you would push for for the end of the year?

O. De La Hoya
Well, I mean, it’s a fight that has been talked about, but there’s nothing that we can push for now because Danny Garcia and Salka, as much as this fight has been written about and talked about, these are two live, willing, hard-working and dedicated fighters that are going to give it their all August 9.

So, there’s really nothing to talk about looking ahead. We feel that making this card, putting it together we’re going to have a lot of shockers, a lot of surprises, a lot of great performances. We’re going to get it all August 9. We have fighters that have inspirational stories, fighters that have worked from the bottom all the way up, like Danny Garcia, Salka, who served our country. We have everything on this card and so there’s nothing that we can really talk about concerning the main event. All we can talk about is we’ll have to wait and see what happens August 9 because we don’t know what’s going to happen.

Q
Danny, you’ve lost a lot of pound-for-pound momentum since the disputed decision win against Herrera in Puerto Rico and now this non-title debacle with Salka. How do you get that momentum back?

D. Garcia
I already got momentum. I’ve been training hard. I’m 28 now. I have no losses and I’m always motivated. I feel like I’ve got great momentum now. I’ve just got to go in there August 9 and perform and get the W. That’s all that matters, other than ratings and rankings and what the people think, it doesn’t matter because good media is good media and bad media is still good media, as long as people are paying attention it makes me relevant and I’m going to go in there August 9 and give the fans a great fight.

Q
You referred to the controversy as the media’s problem. Is that really the paying fan’s problem? What did you mean by that?

D. Garcia
My fans, they’re always going to be my fans regardless. Danny Garcia’s fans support what he does regardless. For other people, I can’t tell for other people. My fans back me up and they love me no matter what.

Q
What is your gripe with the media’s assessment of this fight?

D. Garcia
I don’t read articles and stuff like that. But people will say what they want to say, but it takes a lot of hard work and a lot of dedication to be a world champion and to face pound-for-pound and tough fighters and beat them. So, if you don’t like it, you’ve still got to respect it because at the end of the day it takes a lot of hard work to be an athlete and it takes an extra amount of work to be a world champion.

Q
Rod, what do you think about the fact that this fight was downgraded to non-title status?

R. Salka
It is what it is. There’s nothing I can do about that. I’d of rathered it been for the titles, but what am I going to do?

Q
Is beating Garcia non-title at welterweight just as good for you as beating him for the title at 40 at one point? I guess what I’m asking you is what do you have to gain aside from your purse?

R. Salka
I’m fighter the best fighter at 140 pounds in the world. Titles are what they are, but would I rather fight some guy nobody ever heard of for a title or would I rather fight some guy everybody knows who he is for no title? You know what I mean? Why wouldn’t I want to fight Danny Garcia? He’s the best we’ve got out there. It’s the biggest fight you could possibly get at 140 pounds. I really don’t care if I can put a belt on at the end of it. I can take my purse and go out and have a thousand of those made if I wanted to, what is that?

Q
Though you’re not the underdog here is that criticism motivate you into that underdog mindset that’s served you so well in the past?

D. Garcia
My mindset is to go in there and win and that’s how I approach every one of my fights. Even when I was the underdog against Khan and I was the underdog against Matthysse. I couldn’t understand how I was the underdog, but the media and the people always want to choose the fighter with more fame and more publicity. That’s what makes the underdog when you’re fighting somebody who had probably a bigger name than you in the sport.

But I never had in my mind that I was the underdog, so I just train hard for the occasion and win in spectacular form.

Q
Now, a week or so before the fight, how are those two extra pounds you have in this fight benefitting you? Do you feel the defense between 140 and the weight you are for this fight?

D. Garcia
I feel really energized usually at this time. When I’ve got to be 140 I feel a little bit weak from losing the weight and maintaining, skipping meals and stuff like that. But I’m able to walk around a little bit more comfortable. I’ve still got to work hard to make the weight, I’ve still got to sacrifice, but those two pounds, as anybody knows in boxing if you’re a fighter, two pounds makes a big difference.

It’s helping me, I’m still strong sparring and I still feel strong working out, so it’s going to be a big difference.

Q
Rod, when you were fighting Alexei Collado, was it in your mind at the time that you would be going out to fight the very best fighter in the world at 140 pounds?

R. Salka
No, I wouldn’t have thought that I’d be fighting Danny Garcia in my next fight. Heck, when I was promoting my own shows I didn’t know who I was going to fight in my next fight. It’s just the nature of the beast. You never know. It might be a big fight or I might have been fighting off TV or on another TV network somewhere else. You can’t predict these things in boxing.

I’m happy I did get it, I’m happy that fight went well. I did well and I’m happy to get the opportunity.

Q
What is your preferred weight and how is it for you for 142 pound fight?

R. Salka
Like he was saying, I can make 35, I can make it. I can get down, heck, I can get down to whatever I need to get down to. That’s my job. But that’s really a lot more comfortable for me. A hundred and forty pounds, I don’t want to say easy because you’re killing yourself in the gym every day to get ready for the fight and ready for war. But to get down the weight and make sure your body is as fine-tuned as it can be and you’re sacrificing as little as possible to get down and lose weight. I’ve still got to do that to get to 40.

Q
Oscar, how did this card come about as opposed to the desired match-up between Garcia and Peterson?

O. De La Hoya
We, obviously, did want to stage a fight that all the media was suggesting. Peterson vs Garcia, but it wasn’t a fight that was available. It just wasn’t available. It couldn’t be made and so Salka, obviously, he’s well deserving. He has a Rocky-like story and so we put on a tremendous card from top to bottom, with Daniel Jacobs and with Peterson and with all these big name fighters.

This is a perfect fit for the Barclays Center and it’s like Danny Garcia said, you have two fighters that are going to be ready to come August 9 and the leather will be flying and it’s going to be a tremendous show.

Q
Danny, is there any chance of you bringing the title home to Philadelphia one day?

D. Garcia
Actually that was a dream of mine to fight in Philadelphia on a world title. I don’t think there’s been a world title fight here in quite an amount of years. But it wasn’t available at this time. We tried, it wasn’t available. A lot of the venues were booked for the time, the fight that they were trying to schedule in that time period, so we went with Barclays Center.

Barclays Center is a great place. I love it. It feels down home to me. It’s a good place for the people in Philadelphia, if they want to go out, they feel like they want to get out of the city, they just take a two-hour drive to New York, watch boxing and go out in New York after the fight.

So, it’s a good getaway for the people in Philadelphia and a lot of people from Philly are going to be there and it’s going to be like I’m fighting in Philly anyway.

Q
Oscar, without looking past August 9 because Danny Garcia could be included in this question, but since Floyd has a couple of fights left under his belt to become that, he’s that pay-per-view guy right now, are they looking for that next pay-per-view fighter?

O. De La Hoya
Look, we’re focusing on the job at hand. Floyd Mayweather has Maidana in front of him in September. Danny Garcia has Salka in front of him August 9. So, it’s really difficult now in these days to look ahead and plan for the future on all these fights, these mythical fights that everybody wants to watch, because we’re experiencing something that hasn’t been experienced in a long time in boxing.

There’s a lot of upset in boxing today. There are a lot of these fights where people don’t expect an opponent to win because of the champion and because of the stature of the champion. We must pay attention to the fights at hand because you never know what’s going to happen in boxing. And this is a perfect invitation that we must pay attention to the job at hand August 9 because fighters, they don’t know what’s going to happen.

They train hard and they take care of business and they work hard because you never know what’s going to happen. One punch can turn everything around and so it’s hard to look ahead and make plans. Let’s pay attention to August 9 and then, obviously, we’ll move forward from there.

K. Swanson
Thank you. That’s our last question, everybody. We will be sending out the fight week schedule for next week. We have a lot of great opportunities, including workouts with the fighters, press conference and weigh-ins. So, please look in your in boxes for that schedule. Also in action will be Anthony Peterson, “Sir” Marcus Browne, Prichard Colon and D’Mitrius Ballard.

Tickets priced at $250, $125, $75, $50 and $25, plus applicable taxes and service charges are on sale now and are available for purchase at www.barclayscenter.com, www.ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations, by calling 800-745-3000 and at the American Express Box Office. Brooklyn born and bred Sadam “World Kid” Ali (19-0, 12 KOs) has been on a tear since his Golden Boy Promotions debut at Barclays Center against Jay Krupp in September of 2013. Since then, the 25-year-old 2008 U.S. Olympian has halted Jesus Selig and Michael Clark to run his perfect record to 19-0, and now as he defends his title, he sets his sights on Paterson, New Jersey’s Jeremy Bryan (17-3, 7 KOs). A decorated amateur who won two National Golden Gloves titles and also defeated headliner Danny Garcia before turning pro, the 28-year-old Bryan has won three of his last four bouts, most recently defeating Yuir Ramanau and Issouf Kinda.

The brother of IBF Junior Welterweight World Champion Lamont Peterson, lightweight contender Anthony Peterson (33-1, 21 KOs) hopes to add his own title belt to the family trophy case in the coming year, but first he’ll have to add to his three-fight winning streak against an opponent to be named on August 9. Owner of wins over Daniel Attah, Dominic Salcido and Marcos Leonardo Jimenez, the 29-year-old Washington, D.C. product is currently ranked 12th in the world by the IBF, and he’s expecting to climb higher after this upcoming bout.

As he approaches his record seventh appearance at Barclays Center, 2012 U.S. Olympian “Sir” Marcus Browne (11-0, 8 KOs) is becoming synonymous with boxing’s newest Mecca. Unbeaten as a professional, with four knockouts in the Barclays Center ring, the Staten Island native has shown that there’s nothing like fighting in his own backyard. On August 9, this up-and-coming light heavyweight will meet Oakland, California’s Paul Vazquez (10-5-1, 3 KO’s) in his first 10-round bout.

Proudly representing his borough of Brooklyn will be super lightweight prospect Zachary Ochoa (7-0, 4 KOs). Appearing at Barclays Center for the third time, the 22-year-old Ochoa has showed style and savvy throughout his young career, and in his next test, scheduled for four rounds, he will battle it out with Palm Spring, California’s Luis Cervantes (7-7-3, 2 KOs).

Puerto Rico’s latest star on the rise, Orocovis’ Prichard Colon (10-0, 10 KOs) is devastating in the ring, having ended each of his professional fights before the final bell. Just 21-years-old, Colon, who will face Washington, DC’s Lenwood Dozier (9-6-1, 4 KO’s) in an eight-round junior middleweight bout, is sure to thrill the fans as he makes his New York City debut.

DANNY GARCIA MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

Danny Garcia
PHILADELPHIA(July 30, 2014) – Unified Super Lightweight World Champion Danny “Swift” Garcia opened his DSG Boxing Gym in Philadelphia Wednesday for a media workout prior to his August 9 welterweight bout against “Lightning” Rod Salka at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY live on SHOWTIME.

Garcia, along with his father and trainer, Angel Garcia, spoke to the media about the upcoming fight and trained in front of the cameras. With fight night just over a week away, here is what the two had to say on Wednesday:

DANNY GARCIA, Unified Super Lightweight World Champion

“I always have something to prove. Either I’m fighting someone who I’m not supposed to beat and no one believes in me, or I’m fighting someone I’m supposed to beat and if they fight well I can’t win anyway.

“To me, it doesn’t matter, title fight or not, at the end of the day it’s my show and I’m going to put on a great performance for the fans.

“I can guarantee one thing, on Aug. 9 it’s going to be an exciting fight and people who don’t watch it are going to miss out.

“I always go for the knockout. I need a knockout. I haven’t had one since Morales back in Brooklyn so I’m definitely going for it.

“Everybody is entitled to their own opinion. I can’t control what people are going to say. All I can do is go in there August 9th and fight hard for my fans.

“I feel like every fight I’m in is always a big fight. There’s always excitement and the fans know what they’re going to see when they see Danny Garcia. They’re going to see blood, sweat and tears, they’re going to see power and excitement.

“Someone is going to get hurt and it isn’t going to be me.

“The last mandatory I knew I had was Lucas Matthysse. As far as the rankings though, I don’t really pay attention to that.

“No matter how I win, I believe August 9 is going to be a great show. Brooklyn has a great atmosphere for fights.

“Both Salka and [Mauricio] Herrera move a little bit, they’re about the same height so there are some similarities. I was focused last fight [against Herrera], but I made a lot of mistakes. I’m not making any mistakes this time around; you’re going to see me on my A-game.

“We’re more focused as a team this camp and more disciplined. We’re doing everything right. There’s a lot of chemistry. I’ve sparred over 100 rounds already and we’re prepared.

“When I fought Salka last I had just come back from U.S. [amateur] championships, and I had faced so many fighters, the main thing I remember is that I won. The only other thing I remember is being aggressive and trying to walk him down.

“My dad is fired up, he’s been classic Angel Garcia. He was more quiet last fight, but he’s back now. I’m calling August 9 ‘The Purge’ because team Garcia is going to purge Barclays Center.”

ANGEL GARCIA, Danny’s Father and Trainer

“wasn’t disappointed about it not being a title fight, there’s nothing we can do. Everybody has a job, I’m here to train Danny and he’s here to fight.

“I don’t really watch tape. That’s old thinking. I watched the Herrera fight just to get the doubt about it out of my head, but that’s just from the media. They made it seem like Herrera destroyed Danny, but I didn’t see it like that.

“What happens when you get all this negativity in the media about a performance, the next person you’re going to fight feels the consequences. Salka is in a predicament right now. He’s in the wrong place at the wrong time.

“To me, Salka is going to come 100 percent, fighting an undefeated guy. He’s going to want to get that reputation, but I’m not worried about him. I’m worried about Danny and I know he’s going to be ready.”

GARCIA VS. SALKA PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Danny Garcia
DANNY GARCIA, Unified Super Lightweight World Champion

“Come August 9th it’s going to be another great performance by me. I feel like I’ve got a lot to prove. I’ve got to show the world why I’m the unified super lightweight champion of the world.

“I’m already training hard in the gym every day and running the hills. If the fight was next week I’d be ready, I’ve just got to lose a few more pounds.

“I can’t wait until August 9th. Its going to be a stacked card, and August 9th is going to be my night.”

“Danny Garcia has a lot to prove. August 9th, I have to go in there and show him [Rod Salka] that I’m the best fighter in the world.

“August 9th is going to be a classy performance, but ugly for my opponent.”

ANGEL GARCIA, Danny Garcia’s Father & Trainer

“Danny is training hard right now, there’s a great camp going on. He’s going to come in, destroy and conquer.

“Salka can try to come in. He can work hard, but don’t look at the Herrera tape because you’ll get confused. Danny Garcia is a chameleon.

“Just because Danny had an awkward night doesn’t mean it’s going to happen again. He’s going to come in to destroy and conquer.”

ROD SALKA, Super Lightweight Contender

“I’m coming to work. I’ve been working really hard, and my whole boxing career I’ve worked to put myself in position to fight for a championship or a title.

“In this country, thank God, if you’re willing to work hard and bust your butt then the opportunities will present themselves. Opportunities always look a lot like hard work in my opinion.

“So I plan on busting my ass, working hard in the gym. I’m living there now, and I’m going back there tonight. We’re going to give Danny Garcia all that he can handle on August 9th.”

LAMONT PETERSON, IBF Junior Welterweight World Champion

“I just want to say that I’m happy to be fighting in New York. It’s my first time fighting here, so I’m excited. I’m training hard, and we’re going to put on a good fight.

“I’m expecting for him to have a big crowd since this is his hometown. But I’m pretty sure D.C. is going to show up and show out that night. I’m just looking forward to the fight and you all should expect a good one.

“This is my first time fighting in New York City and just knowing that all the greats fought here and it’s a big honor for me and go in and maybe give half of what those old guys used to do.

“I know he [Edgar Santana] will come in prepared. I know Edgar Santana can fight. He can hold his ground against anyone.”

EDGAR SANTANA, Junior Welterweight Contender

“First of all, I’d like to thank Lamont for giving me the chance to fight for the world title. I’m grateful to be here. If you follow my career, you know I’ve had some fallbacks. I’ve been chewed up, swallowed and spit back out by the streets, but I’m here.

“I’m very happy and they say that I’m an underdog, but I’m definitely not training like an underdog. I’m training like I’m a champion.

DANIEL JACOBS, Middleweight Contender

“Finally, the “Miracle Man” has come back to Barclays Center! It feels great to be back in my hometown where I was born and raised and to have an opportunity to fight for a world championship here.

“It’s just mind blowing, the opportunity of a lifetime, and I look forward to taking full advantage of the opportunity.

“I want to thank my opponent for accepting this fight because he’s coming from Australia to Brooklyn to fight in my back yard. It says a lot about that fighter and the man that he is, and I applaud that.

“I remember being on my death bed, and I found our in the newspaper that the Barclays Center was opening and that they were going to have fights here. And me not knowing if I would ever be able to box again, let alone perform here…to be standing here in front of you guys and say that I’m fighting for the WBA championship of the world is awesome!

“I also want to say that I represent more than just the sport of boxing. I’m a true gentleman of the sport, and it takes guys like myself, Oscar and other guys who represent the sport well to continue to take this sport to another level.

“I just want to say thank you guys for all of your support that you’ve given me. It will definitely be the start of something epic. I appreciate you guys and God bless you all.

“This means the world to me, to have the opportunity to fight for a world championship and to win it in my backyard with my fans and my family here. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime.”

“I’m training like a champion and come August 9th I will be a champion.”

GREG COHEN, Jarrod Fletcher’s Manager

“SHOWTIME has an unbelievable commitment to airing incredible boxing and the August 9show is no different and we’re very happy to be a part of it.

“I’ve been lucky enough to come to quite a few events at Barclays Center and I’m excited to be a part of this event.

“I’d like to thank Golden Boy, dealing with Eric Gomez to make this fight could not have been better and making this fight could not have gone smoother.

“Daniel Jacobs is a great sportsman and a terrific guy, unfortunately I happen to be representing the guy going against him.

“You probably don’t know Jarrod Fletcher, he’s a kid from Australia who had a very similar upbringing in amateur boxing to Oscar De La Hoya. He’s a two-time Olympian, he beat current superstars Adonis Stevenson and James DeGale.

“I could stand here for an hour and talk about his credentials. He could not be happier about this opportunity to fight in New York in Daniel Jacobs’ hometown, but that’s what you have to do if you want to be a champion.

“I’m looking forward to August 9and as Oscar said, the real winners are going to be the fans.

SADAM ALI, Undefeated Welterweight Prospect

“I’m very excited about the card. We have a lot of great fighters. I want to thank Golden Boy, SHOWTIME and Barclays Center for making the fight in my hometown.

“I’m excited, I’ve been working very hard and I’m ready for the elite level.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, President & Founder of Golden Boy Promotions

“It is a pleasure to be back at the Barclays Center where we have seen that boxing is alive and thriving in Brooklyn. August 9th we have three world title fights with three of the most talented and beloved fighters today.

“Danny Garcia has beaten some of the biggest and best names in boxing and plans to remain unbeaten on August 9.

“Most fighters say they come from the streets, for Lamont Peterson it is the literal sense. Him and his brother were left homeless on the streets of DC at the age of 10. Now Lamont has climbed all the way to becoming a world champion.

“For Daniel Jacobs this fight will have significance few could ever dream of. Danny has had a battle for life itself with cancer in order to get here.

“All three of these world champions will be put to the test August 9th as they face the most dangerous opponents in boxing…the underdogs.

“Rod Salka, Edgar Santana and Jarrod Fletcher, each of these fighters will have the chance to showcase their heart and desire and to prove the doubters wrong.

“All we need to do is look at recent Golden Boy boxing history. We know that some of the best fights of the past year starred underdogs in the fight of their lives.

“In boxing you are dealing with the theater of the unexpected. At Golden Boy we are focused on giving the fans exciting matchups that wont disappoint.

“Not too long ago, every one of these world champions Garcia, Peterson and Jacobs were in make or break fights where they were the underdogs. They know what it’s like to go into a fight and pull off an upset.

“In boxing, it’s the punch you don’t see that will knock you out and it’s the opponent you don’t expect that will beat you.

“Every fighter who makes it to that squared circle is a superstar. I remember when I fought Felix Sturm and everyone said it would be a walk in the park. And we all know what happened. It was a very difficult fight.

“Believe me when I tell you from personal experience. On Saturday August 9th these fighters will be ready to lay it all on the line. I already know who the winner will be, the fans.

“Don’t wait until the last minute, get your tickets now for what will be another great card at Barclays Center.”

CHRIS DEBLASIO, Executive Vice President of Sports Communication for SHOWTIME

“August 9th we are going to feature live on SHOWTIME three world championship fights including three young dynamic and great American stars of the sport today.

“These three fighters, Daniel Jacobs, Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson have been a part of an incredible run on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING events over the last two and a half years, helped us bring about the best fights we can deliver to our audience and helped us see record ratings increases across the board over those last two and a half years.

“These guys [Rod Salka, Edgar Santana and Jarrod Fletcher] are hungry, they’re on the cusp of winning their first world championship fights and we expect that they will come on August 9th and deliver to the standard that we’ve set on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING with some of the amazing fights that we’ve had just this year alone.

“I don’t think anyone gave Mauricio Herrera enough credit and a big chance to give Danny Garcia a challenge back in March; we saw what happened there. I don’t think Yoshihiro Kamegai got a lot of credit when he was coming into this fight with Robert Guerrero, knowing John Molina, Jr. get Lucas Matthysse, this list goes on and on, Andrzej Fonfara against Stevenson, we saw an incredible fight there and an incredible challenge.

“August 9th we expect there to be fireworks in the ring, we expect some of these opponents to come in and bring their all for an opportunity of a lifetime and for our stars of the sport to match that challenge.”

SEAN SADDEH, VP of Programming at Barclays Center

“We look forward to another great night of Golden Boy boxing. It’s exciting to bring Danny Garcia back to Barclays Center, where his last two fights have brought the crowd to its feet.

“We’re also excited to bring back Brooklyn’s own, Daniel Jacobs for his third fight in our arena. Daniel has served as an inspiration to the up and coming fighters in this borough and I know he will have a lot of fans cheering for him August 9.

“I’d also like to welcome back our Brooklynites Sadam Ali and Zachary Ochoa each of whom are fighting at Barclays Center for the third time.

“For the rest of the fighters, welcome to Brooklyn, we hope you enjoy fighting at Barclays Center. This is our eighth fight with Golden Boy at Barclays Center and we want to thank the entire team there.

“We are looking forward to seeing all of you next month at Barclays Center and for many future fights.”

DANNY GARCIA, LAMONT PETERSON AND DANIEL JACOBS TO HEADLINE GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS’ RETURN TO BROOKLYN’S BARCLAYS CENTER SATURDAY, AUGUST 9 LIVE ON SHOWTIME®

Danny and Angel Garcia
BROOKLYN (June 24, 2014) – Golden Boy Promotions is back at Barclays Center on Saturday, August 9, with a SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® tripleheader featuring the sport’s brightest young stars in pivotal world title fights. Boxing on Brooklyn’s biggest stage will be Unified Junior Welterweight World Champion Danny “Swift” Garcia who will meet “Lightning” Rod Salka, IBF 140-Pound Titleholder Lamont Peterson who will face New York’s Edgar “El Chamaco” Santana and Brooklyn’s own Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs will challenge Australia’s Jarrod “Left Jab” Fletcher for the vacant WBA World Middleweight Championship.

“This is my third fight at Barclays Center, and it feels like a second home to me,” said Garcia, the undefeated Philadelphia native. “I’ll be ready for Rod Salka, and I’m going to give my Brooklyn fans another great show.”

“This is the biggest stage I have fought on in my career, but that doesn’t intimidate me,” said Salka. “Danny Garcia is beatable, and I’m going to show the world how it’s done. My experience has prepared me for this, and I will be ready on August 9.”

“I’m really excited about this fight and about making a statement to the boxing world that I’m the true junior welterweight world champion,” said Peterson. “I know Danny will be watching me, and I’ll be watching him. After August 9, there will be only one fight to make at 140 pounds.”

“I want to thank Lamont Peterson and his team for giving me this opportunity. This has been a long time coming for me and I’m just so excited and thankful to finally be getting a crack at the world championship,” said Santana. “This is an absolute pleasure for me to get this opportunity, especially since the fight is taking place right here in my hometown of New York. I haven’t fought here in a couple of years and I expect to have a ton of people there to support me come August 9.”

“This whole comeback has been a dream so far, and what better way to keep it going than with a world title fight in my borough?” said Jacobs, who battled back from a bout with cancer to earn a shot at the WBA championship. “This is the fight I’ve been waiting for and no one will keep me from that belt.”

“I know that the hometown crowd will be in Jacob’s corner, but that’s fine,” said Fletcher. “My goal like Daniel’s is to win the WBA Middleweight title – and regardless of where the fight is taking place, I intend on having my hand raised and hearing the ring announcer say ‘AND THE NEW WBA Middleweight World Champion Jarrod “Left Jab” Fletcher…!'”

“We are thrilled to be able to bring such a stacked card; this should help answer any and all questions about the future of Golden Boy Promotions – it is brighter than ever,” said Oscar De La Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions. “Barclays Center and the Brooklyn fans have been great supporters of Golden Boy boxing, and we can’t wait to bring them another great show on August 9.”

“SHOWTIME continues to deliver the deepest fight cards in boxing,” said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President & General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports. “Three world title fights featuring young, dynamic, American champions at the electrifying Barclays Center in Brooklyn is a recipe for great sports television and the standard for SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING.”
“You know it’s going to be a great night of boxing when Danny Garcia and Brooklyn’s own Danny Jacobs are on the fight card at Barclays Center,” said Brett Yormark, CEO of Barclays Center. “Both of these boxers have captivated audiences in their previous fights at Barclays Center and we are delighted that they are returning to Brooklyn’s most celebrated ring. Golden Boy is once again delivering great boxing to Barclays Center.”
Now in his third year as a world champion, Danny “Swift” Garcia (28-0, 16 KOs) has already made five successful title defenses. He’s defeated Amir Khan, Erik Morales, Zab Judah, Lucas Matthysse and Mauricio Herrera. Still just 26-years-old, Garcia’s fan base is growing with each bout, which isn’t a surprise given his fan-friendly style and willingness to fight all challengers.

Unbeaten in four of his last five fights, with the only loss coming via controversial decision to Ricardo Alvarez last December, Bunola, Pennsylvania’s “Lightning” Rod Salka (19-3, 3 KOs) is a skilled boxer who doesn’t mind battling it out in the trenches if necessary, making his upcoming bout with Garcia one fight fans won’t want to miss. A professional since 2007, the 31-year-old Salka just handed highly touted Alexei Collado his first loss on April 18, and he expects to shock the boxing world once more on August 9.

Washington, D.C.’s Lamont Peterson (32-2-1, 16 KOs) is a gifted boxer-puncher with much heart and talent. Like Garcia, the 30-year-old Peterson is another longtime champion. He has held a version of the 140-pound crown since 2011, defeating the likes of Amir Khan and Kendall Holt. Peterson is coming off an impressive 12-round unanimous decision win over previously unbeaten Dierry Jean in January.

Unbeaten in eight of his last nine bouts, including his last three straight fights, New York City’s Edgar “El Chamaco” Santana (29-4, 20 KOs) was long considered one of the city’s top prospects, and now the current NABA champion will get his long-awaited shot at a world championship. Owner of wins over Josesito Lopez, Grover Wiley and Luis Hernandez, the 35-year-old Santana always comes to fight, and he will be bringing it from rounds one through 12 on August 9.

Perhaps the most inspirational figure in boxing today, Brooklyn’s Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs (27-1, 24 KOs) seemed to be a lock for world title honors before cancer threatened his life and kept him out of the ring for 19 months. But when he returned, he picked up where he left off, securing five straight wins, all by knockout. On August 9, boxing’s most amazing comeback story could get a new chapter if Jacobs can win a world title at home.

Fighting out of Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia, 30-year-old Jarrod “Left Jab” Fletcher (18-1, 10 KOs) is a former star amateur who competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics as the Australian team captain. Turning pro in 2009, Fletcher has won all but one of his 19 pro bouts. Currently on a six-fight winning streak, Fletcher is in the best form of his career as he approaches his first world title shot.

The event is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and is sponsored by Corona and AT&T. Tickets priced at $250, $125, $75, $50 and $25, plus applicable taxes and service charges go on sale Friday, June 27 at noon ET and are available for purchase at www.barclayscenter.com, www.ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations, by calling 800-745-3000 and at the American Express Box Office. “Turkish Warrior” Selcuk Aydin getting ready for WBC eliminator against Viktor Postol on May 17th in Inglewood

Selcuk Aydin has only one goal in his mind: The “Turkish Warrior” wants to become world champion. On May 17th he could make a huge step towards a world title when he faces unbeaten Ukrainian Viktor Postol in Inglewood, California. The winner of this WBC super lightweight eliminator will be mandatory challenger for unified WBC and WBA champion Danny Garcia.

Aydin vs. Postol will be live on HBO as televised co-feature of the clash between Juan Manuel Marquez and Mike Alvarado. “This is Selcuk’s chance to get back into the mix and all the way to the top again”, says promoter Ahmet Oner. “He already fought at this level when he faced Robert Guerrero for the WBC championship at 147. In that fight he just couldn’t pull the trigger. But I think his natural power will be a bigger factor at 140. If he gets past Postol I am sure that he can beat Garcia, too. But he has to live up to his potential. I am sure that it will be an exciting and brutal fight.”

Aydin is currently in training camp in his hometown Trabzon with head coach Robert Rolle getting ready and in shape for the big fight. His sparring partners can tell that the “Turkish Warrior” is taking this fight very serious. Light middleweight contender Gogi Knezevic had to quit and leave camp after only one very tough eight round session because of neck problems. Now European champion Michele Di Rocco gets to feel Aydin’s dedication and will power. “Selcuk is very focused and very strong. On fight night he will be in perfect shape”, says coach Rolle. “I think his aggressiveness and pure power will be too much for Postol.”

Mayfield on training with Virgil Hunter…
“Virgil and I have been working together since I was in the amateurs. He knows how to push me to bring out the best in my fighting style. Ben Bautista is also helping out. Virgil has some of the best fighters in the world working out at his gym so I’m getting the best sparring possible. Virgil has got me working on some new punches that I’ll display against Dulorme. Together I have a great corner guiding me to the top. Training camp is going great.”

Mayfield on his fight against top rated contender Thomas Dulorme…
“Dulorme is a technical guy with a long jab who has some fast hands. He’s nothing special though. I’ve seen him get knocked out before so I know his chin is suspect. I’ve fought guys who are long and rangy just like him so I’m confident in my ability to land some powerful shots. If I touch that chin of his, there’s no doubt, he’s getting knocked out.”

Mayfield comments on the Danny Garcia vs. Mauricio Herrera outcome…
“I thought Herrera pulled off the victory against Garcia because he landed more punches and was the aggressor for most of the fight. The fact that I dominated Herrera and he got the world title opportunity means there’s something wrong. I’ve been calling Danny Garcia out for the last couple of years but he’s been running from me because I put it on him when he brought me in camp. I’ll beat the breaks off Garcia if we ever fight. First I have to take care of Dulorme and that is where my 100% focus is right now.”

Mayfield comments on fighting on HBO for the second time…
“I’m very excited to be fighting on HBO again. This is a big opportunity to prove I’m one of the top fighters in the division. This is the type of fight the fans are seeking, two guys at the top of their game who are hungry to prove their great. I want to thank my promoter Bob Arum, Top Rank and HBO for giving another shot to showcase my talent on a global network.”

DANNY GARCIA DEFEATS MAURICIO HERRERA, REMAINS UNIFIED SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION

Danny Garcia
Unified Super Lightweight World Champion Danny “Swift” Garcia (28-0, 16 KOs) defeated Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera (20-4, 7 KOs) via a majority decision to remain undefeated on Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd at Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon, Puerto Rico on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING®.

Garcia established himself in the first round, landing the bigger punches against Herrera. But it was quickly clear that the challenger wasn’t going to let Garcia off easy, peppering the champion with strong shots to his body and head. By the end of round four, Garcia’s corner, specifically his father and trainer, Angel Garcia, could be heard telling the champion urgently to step-up his game and take control. Herrera, of Riverside, Calif., pressed on and proved himself as a worthy opponent with both fighters exchanging vicious shots throughout the extremely close match.

With the raucous crowd partial to the defending champion, whose father was born and raised in Puerto Rico, Garcia seemed to be carried by the cheers in what turned out to be the toughest fight of his career. At the end of the fight, SHO STATS reported that Garcia had landed 150 power punches compared to Herrera’s 82. Herrera landed more overall punches with 221 to Garcia’s 204. The final scores were 114-114, 116-112 and, 116-112.

After the fight, Garcia spoke with SHOWTIME Sports® ringside reporter Jim Gray, saying, “He is a crafty veteran and I know every time I step in the ring, every fighter wants what I have. So I expect them to bring everything. I had to make adjustments and I had to push the fight. He is a good fighter but I am a true champion. I had to make adjustments and pull it out. I needed to find my comfort zone but once I adjusted and got him on the ropes I knew I was doing good. I had to keep my composure and use my power shots. He came to fight and he did and it was a great fight.”

When asked if he felt he did enough to win the close decision, Garcia said, “I wanted to knock him out in front of my fans but he was tough. I know nothing is going to be easy from this point on for the rest of my career. I thought I won the fight. The Puerto Rican fans here support me. I love them.”

Regarding a potential move up in weight, Garcia told Gray, “I think making 140 pounds might have affected my performance a little bit. I need to sit with my camp and see if I should go up to 147 and start a new journey. It’s been getting a little hard so maybe I need to think about moving up.”

After the fight, Herrera told media that he felt he won. “I thought I was fine-tuned,” he said. “I came perfectly prepared for this fight. I was trying to push the fight. I came to box but he wasn’t making a fight so I am the one that had to make the fight. I was the one putting the pressure on to make the fight. I feel like I won the fight. I thought I finished strong at the end too. I thought I won the fight.”

Heavyweight Deontay Wilder made it 31 for 31 in the knockout department has he stopped Malik Scott in a scheduled 12 round bout.

Wilder landed a left to the temple that was followed up by a right hand that sent Scott to the canvas. Scott tried to get up but stumbled at the count of ten of the fight was over at 1:36 of round one.

Wilder, 227 lbs of Tuscaloosa, AL is 31-0 with 31 knockouts. Scott, 238 lbs of Van Nuys, CA is 36-2-1.

After the fight, Wilder spoke with Grayabout his performance. “I’ve got power. I’ve got natural power. This is something that you can’t buy. This is something that you can’t enhance and put in your body. This is all natural pure Alabama power. The left hand was right to the temple, to the head, and that is a soft spot. My power is crazy. I go through the gloves. Even though he had his gloves, there is nothing stopping that. Even though it went through his glove it still hurts.”

When asked if he is ready to take a step up and fight for a heavyweight title despite having not faced the top fighters in the division, Wilder responded, “All the testing is done in the gym. I bust my butt off in the gym to come here and perform for all the people and I make it look easy. I don’t care if I don’t go past four rounds or solve all the questions that people have about me. I have one mission and it is to unify all the heavyweight belts.”

After the fight Scott, upset by his performance, said, “I got caught. I don’t really remember what happened because I never saw the shot coming. I know he caught me with the left hook. I am so disappointed. I trained really hard. It is just awful.

In what turned out to be a highly entertaining rematch of former world champion, Juan Manuel Lopez made it two for two against Daniel Ponce De Leon in by scoring a 2nd round stoppage in a scheduled 10 round Jr. Lightweight bout.

De Leon struck 1st in round two by scoring a knockdown from a hard left hook. Lopez came back by depositing De Leon from a right hook. A flurry sent De Leon to the canvas for a 2nd time. Lopez finished the fight by landing some hard power shots on the ropes and the bout was stopped at 2:44 of round two.

Lopez, 129 lbs of Caguas, PR is now 34-3 with 31 knockouts. De Leon, 128 3/4 lbs of West Covina, CA is now 45-6.

Former world title challenger Daniel Jacobs took out Milton Nunez in round one of their scheduled 10 round Middleweight bout.

Jacobs scored three knockdowns from a left hook and the latter two came from right hands. The bout was stopped upon the third knockdown at 2:25 of round one.

Jacobs, 161 1/2 lbs of Brooklyn, NY is now 27-1 with 24 knockouts. Nunez, 162 lbs of Barranquilla, COL is now 26-10-1.

Danny Garcia has his own plan

By Norm Frauenheim

Danny Garcia
Danny Garcia might be the only fighter not trying to elbow his way toward the front of the line that leads to the big paycheck that comes with a bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Garcia wouldn’t turn down the opportunity. Too many numbers after the dollar sign to do that. But he’s not going to launch a social-media campaign in a noisy attempt to get himself on Mayweather’s short list. Yeah, all that money can buy a lot. But there’s a sense that Garcia is investing in something that can’t always be bought.

“At the end of the day, I’m working on my own legacy,’’ he said.

Legacy-building is a gamble. It’s also long-term, which can require patience when confronted by the temptation to cash in as quickly as possible. Garcia is in the Mayweather mix whether he wants to be or not. Media speculation, twitter and the blogosphere have put him there. So has he, of course. But he hasn’t talked his way into consideration.

The junior-welterweight’s unbeaten record (27-0, 16 KOs) including upsets of Amir Khan and Lucas Matthysse, says it all. It’s a resume tough to ignore and perhaps wise to avoid. He wasn’t a finalist in Mayweather’s last deliberations, which led to him pound-for-pound kind picking Marcos Maidana over Khan for May 3.

But the Garcia name was there, maybe as an alternate or a future possibility for a spot on Mayweather’s Showtime dance card. It’s difficult, if not hazardous, to guess what might be next for Mayweather, anyway. The latest example of that is explosive allegations in a TMZ story about Mayweather’s role in a beat-down of two people, whom he suspected of stealing jewelry. The story is short on sources. But TMZ is often right.

Whether the story unravels or leads to further trouble with law enforcement for Mayweather, it’s a warning for any fighter who hooks his hopes on to the Mayweather bandwagon.

Garcia hasn’t.

“If a Mayweather fight came along, I’d fight him,’’ Garcia said. “I’d fight anybody. But don’t expect me to call him out or anything. That’s just not me. I’m just trying to stay in my own lane.

“Whoever they put in front of me, I guess that’s who gets beat up that day.’’

On Saturday, that somebody appears to be Mauricio Herrera (20-3, 7 KOs) of Riverside, Calif. In part, the Showtime-televised bout is a way for Garcia to introduce himself to his roots. He’s fighting in Puerto Rico, the boyhood home for his outspoken dad and trainer, Angel. Although unknown, Herrera has shown he can be dangerous. He beat Ruslan Provodnikov in 2011. Garcia only has to look in the mirror to know the price of overlooking anyone. He was overlooked by Khan and Matthysse. He promises that he won’t commit the same mistake. Besides, a loss might damage his chances at ever facing Mayweather.

“As a fighter, I deserve to fight him more than anybody,’’ he said. “But there’s a plan to all of this.’’

Garcia’s plan. About that, there’s little doubt.

‘HUNGRY’ GARCIA OUT TO KEEP WINNING STREAK AS HERRERA DECLARES ‘HE’S FOUGHT BETTER GUYS FOR PEANUTS’ AHEAD OF WEEKEND CLASH LIVE ON BOXNATION

Danny Garcia
LONDON (March 13) – Reigning light-welterweight king Danny Garcia believes Mauricio Herrera has no idea what he has gotten himself into when the pair clash this weekend.

The 25-year-old Philadelphia native puts his world titles on the line as he goes in against the tricky Herrera in Bayamon, Puerto Rico this Saturday night, live and exclusive on BoxNation.

Returning to the homeland of his parents, unbeaten Garcia has vowed to put on an impressive display in front of the locals and continue his winning streak after noticing a chink in the armour of Mexican-American ace Herrera.

“When I look at him he’s not sure,” said Garcia. “He’s not sure what he’s gotten himself into. I’m sure he trained hard. One thing about boxing is you never know what’s going to happen. I came so far to prove myself and I’m so hungry to get better and continue to keep winning. I’m only 25 years old and at the beginning of my career. Whatever he’s thinking it’s not going to stop me,” he said.

As the current top dog of the 140 pound division after capturing the WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine world titles, Garcia has gone from strength-to-strength after bursting to prominence with his stunning victory over Amir Khan in 2012.

That win followed subsequent triumphs as he re-matched Erik Morales, overcame Zab Judah and highly impressed against feared Argentine puncher Lucas Matthysse.

Since his win over Matthysse last September, Garcia has begun to be recognised as one of boxing’s best, something which is only beginning to register with the man himself.

“It’s just starting to sink in, my last couple of fights I showed a lot. In the Judah fight I showed that I could take a punch. In the Matthysse fight it just showed how much more experienced I am and how I can control the fight. I feel I’m growing into being a true champion and definitely one of the best pound-for-pound fighters,” said Garcia.

Over the last year a certain assurance and confidence in the ring has started to take over Garcia, who is enjoying his time in the limelight.

“I’m confident – it’s kind of like you’re on cruise control. You’re adjusting to the bumps in the road. I’m just flying and every time a problem comes I just find a way to get around it. That’s how it is when I’m against contenders. Being a champion is definitely everything,” he said.

Known for his outspoken and blunt nature, Garcia’s father and trainer Angel is expecting his son’s dominance to continue and has written of Herrera’s chances.

“March 15th, [Danny] will still be the undefeated champ of the world,” said Angel. “Herrera, you’ve got to give him hope. Hope that he doesn’t get knocked out. You’ve got to give the man hope. His family is here. I respect that. They love him. There is nothing wrong with that,” he said.

“But come March 15th [Danny] is still the undefeated champ of the world. This isn’t something that just happened. This was a dream, a dream that I had when Danny was a child. Danny is meant to be. Dreams aren’t meant to be broken – not this one anyway.

“On March 15th, he will still be the undefeated champ of the world – I will promise you that,” Angel stated.

The 33-year-old Herrera though, who was the last man to beat the WBO light-welterweight world champion, the formidable Ruslan Provodnikov, appears unaffected by the claims from the Garcia camp and knows this fight represents a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“I started boxing with my two brothers when I was 13 with no gear, bare hands. My father used to watch and get a good laugh out of it. My older brother got me my first punching bag but my mother was the first one that took me to the gym, to a gym at a church. I truly have the support of my family,” said Herrera.

“I trained well, very well. I don’t take this fight lightly; fighting Danny is not something to take lightly. But I’ve fought guys tougher than him for peanuts,” he said boldly.

“My biggest purse before this fight was $30,000. I’ve worked in construction and other handy jobs. This is my opportunity. This is my chance and I’m not about to let it pass me by,” Herrera said.

The stacked card from the Golden Boy Promotions show also sees exciting knockout artist Deontay Wilder continue his march towards a world title shot as he faces the highly respected Malik Scott in his toughest fight to date.

Plus, Puerto Rican favourite Juan Manuel Lopez is back in action as he returns to face Mexican hitman Daniel Ponce De Leon in a fight that guarantees fireworks.

ALL-STAR LINEUP HEADING TO PUERTO RICO ON SATURDAY, MARCH 15 AT COLISEO RUBEN RODRIGUEZ IN BAYAMON LIVE

LOS ANGELES (March 12, 2014) – As Puerto Rico prepares for a stellar SHOWTIME® doubleheader featuring Danny “Swift” Garcia’s unified super lightweight world title defense against Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera and the heavyweight clash between unbeaten Deontay Wilder and Malik Scott, fans at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon can get ready for even more explosive action as the undercard will feature top contenders Daniel “The Golden Child” Jacobs, Jose “Chelo” Gonzalez and Ed “The Lion” Paredes, future stars of Puerto Rican boxing. Additionally, there’s the previously announced SHO EXTREME® headliner pitting former world champions Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez and Daniel Ponce de Leon against each other in a rematch for the WBO International Junior Lightweight Title. Also in action will be John Karl Sosa, Prichard Colon and Pedro Vicente.

In the 10-round SHO EXTREME co-feature, Jacobs will look to keep the momentum from his knockout win over Giovanni Lorenzo going when he battles Miami’s Milton “El Misil” Nunez.

After surviving a harrowing battle with cancer that not only threatened his promising career, but his life, Brooklyn’s Daniel “The Golden Child” Jacobs (26-1, 23 KOs) turned into boxing’s miracle man, returning after more than 19 months away to knock out Josh Luteran in 73 seconds on October 20, 2012. Two more stoppage wins over Chris Fitzpatrick and Keenan Collins followed before the 27-year-old made a statement to the world with his third round technical knockout over former world title challenger Giovanni Lorenzo. On Saturday, Jacobs is back to face Colombia native Milton “El Misil” Nunez (26-9-1, 24 KOs). A 26-year-old power puncher, Nunez’ last nine wins have come by way of knockout, all in four rounds or less, so expect fireworks from start to finish in this one.

Toa Baja’s Jose “Chelo” Gonzalez (22-1, 17 KOs) will be back in the ring for the first time since his gutsy WBO title fight against Ricky Burns last May, facing an opponent to be announced in an eight-round lightweight bout. Forced to withdraw from the fight after the ninth round against Burns due to injury, the 30-year-old contender, who has scored 12 of his last 13 wins by knockout, is eager to get back to another title fight as soon as possible.

In an eight-round welterweight bout, Hollywood, Florida’s Ed “The Lion” Paredes (34-3-1, 22 KOs) will continue his quest for a world title opportunity when he meets the Dominican Republic’s Yoryi Estrella (10-9-2, 7 KOs). Currently ranked sixth in the world by the WBC, and ninth by the WBA and IBF, the 28-year-old Paredes will bring a 14-fight winning streak into the ring with him against the hard-hitting and upset-minded Estrella.

Fans in Bayamon will witness an all-Puerto Rican clash in the junior welterweight division on Saturday when 21-year-old Caguas phenomenon John Karl Sosa (8-0, 6 KOs) attempts to keep his perfect record intact in a four-round matchup against Toa Baja’s Antonio Sanchez (5-2-2, 3 KOs), who is coming off back-to-back bouts against unbeatens Jamel Herring and Ivan Redkach.

Plus, 2012 Puerto Rican Olympic team member Prichard “Digget” Colon (7-0, 7 KOs) of Orocovis risks his unbeaten slate in a six-round super welterweight bout against an opponent to be determined. In the four-round featherweight opener, Mayaguez’ Pedro Vicente (4-0, 1 KO), who prepared for this fight in the Danny Garcia gym in Philadelphia, faces Bayamon’s own Karl Garcia (3-2, 1 KO).

“Garcia vs. Herrera,” a 12-round WBC Super Lightweight World Title on Saturday, March 15, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions, Swift Promotions in association with PR Best Boxing and sponsored by Corona and AT&T. The co-main event, Deontay Wilder vs. Malik Scott, is a 12-round WBC Final Heavyweight eliminator bout presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Goossen Tutor Promotions. What the fighters and executives said Wednesday:

DANNY “SWIFT” GARCIA, UNIFIED SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION
“I had a tremendous camp. This Saturday I’m going to win for my people in Puerto Rico and take my belt home with me.

“I love it here in Puerto Rico. I love the weather and the beautiful people. Everything about the culture is like where I grew up in Philadelphia. It’s just like Puerto Rico but it’s just the city life. But it’s the same thing. We eat the same food. We listen to the same music. Everything is the same but it’s just a little part of North Philadelphia. Everything is the same except for the snow.

“I trained in Philadelphia. I had a good training camp in Philadelphia. I did everything I was supposed to do. I didn’t take shortcuts. I came to Puerto Rico a week before the fight for my training. I’m 110 percent. I’m in the best shape. I am ready. I did what I always do and I’m ready.”

MAURICIO “EL MAESTRO” HERRERA, SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT CONTENDER
“I started boxing with my two brothers when I was 13 with no gear, bare hands. My father used to watch and get a good laugh out of it. My older brother got me my first punching bag but my mother was the first one that took me to the gym, to a gym at a church. I truly have the support of my family.

“I trained well, very well. I don’t take this fight lightly; fighting Danny is not something to take lightly. But I’ve fought guys tougher than him for peanuts.

“My biggest purse before this fight was $30,000. I’ve worked in construction and other handy jobs. This is my opportunity. This is my chance and I’m not about to let it pass me by.”

ANGEL GARCIA, DANNY GARCIA’S FATHER AND TRAINER
“March 15, [Danny] will still be the undefeated Champ of the world. Herrera, you’ve got to give him hope. Hope that he doesn’t get knocked out. You’ve got to give the man hope. His family is here. I respect that. They love him. There is nothing wrong with that. But come March 15 [Danny] is still the undefeated Champ of the world. This isn’t something that just happened. This was a dream, a dream that I had when Danny was a child. Danny is meant to be. Dreams aren’t meant to be broken not this one anyway.

“He [Herrera] has fought guys, opponents. You’re fighting in Puerto Rico now. Danny is 100 percent Puerto Rican. I don’t care what they say. He is my blood. I am Puerto Rican. He’s Puerto Rican. On March 15, he will still be the undefeated Champ of the world. And I will promise you that.

“I won’t put my head involved in this one because my daughters got nervous. They told me, ‘Dad, please don’t say that.’ People thought that it was a joke. I really meant that. Would Herrera’s coach do that? No, because that is the difference between his team and our team. My soul is in the ring with Danny. I would die for Danny and he would die for me.”

WILLIE SILVA, MAURICIO HERRERA’S TRAINER
“I’m pleased to be back in Puerto Rico. I want to thank Golden Boy for giving us this opportunity, an opportunity that we have been waiting for some time now and we are grateful for that.

“We are here to win this fight. We are not here to see if we can win, we are here because we know we CAN win.

“Danny Garcia’s parents claim he is Puerto Rican, but he is NOT a Puerto Rican, he’s from Philadelphia. He doesn’t even speak Spanish.

“We came to Puerto Rico, ready to fight. Mauricio is ready and watch, come Saturday night Mauricio is going to shock more than one. We are leaving Puerto Rico with Danny’s belts.”

DEONTAY WILDER, WBC CONTINENTAL AMERICAS HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION
[About fighting in Puerto Rico]”I feel great! Like Tony the Tiger! I have lots of fans out here, a lot more than I thought I did. They showed me love right when I arrived. When I found out I was fighting in Puerto Rico I was super excited! Puerto Rico is a beautiful island with beautiful people and beautiful weather!

[About Malik Scott’s style] “I haven’t seen Malik Scott personally fight but he’s been in my camp before. He was one of my sparring partners in my past camps. He was a lot of help and very competitive. He knows my style and what I bring to the table. We know each other’s style. Whoever gets first to the punch will win. The smarter and better looking person will win and that’s going to be me.”

MALIK SCOTT, TOP HEAVYWEIGHT CONTENDER
“I am extremely proud of Danny Garcia. This is my first time meeting him. Congratulations comrade. The thing that prides me the most about fighting on his undercard is that any good coach can take a fighter and smooth out his jagged edges, but Angel Garcia he took his son from scratch. That is the definition of a true and great trainer so I am proud of him for that.

“In my opinion, Deontay Wilder and I are the biggest fight in the heavyweight division right now. I am extremely excited and I am taking on a dangerous fighter with the magnitude of Deontay’s punching power and the aura that has been built around him. It will take that type of fighter for me to rise to the great level that I believe I am going to be at come Saturday night. I believe out of everyone that has fought Deontay I have the highest skill caliber. I am not coming to test him; I am coming to beat him. I am from Philly. I live in California. I’m happy for this opportunity and come Saturday night I am going to take full advantage of it. ”

JUAN MANUEL LOPEZ, WBO INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION
“I’m very grateful to God for having presented me with this opportunity. I’m grateful for the people from Puerto Rico for their continuous support.

“This is going to be a great fight. He’s going to try to get a knockout, I’m going to do my job as well and definitely the one that is better prepared will come out victorious, and that will be me.

“I came here to show Puerto Rico and the rest of the world that Juanma Lopez has still some game to show.

“It was not mere coincidence that I won the first fight against Ponce De Leon, I won because I’m a better fighter. On Saturday, March 15, Ponce better be ready, because I’m ready and I’m not about losing.”

DANIEL PONCE DE LEON, FORMER WBC FEATHERWEIGHT WOLRD CHAMPION
“I’ve been training hard and I’m ready. There’s not much left to do to prepare other than make weight on Thursday and give my best on Saturday.

“This is going to be a great fight. I feel very good because I prepared well. I’m ready. This is the comeback of my career. I’m ready.

“Juanma has a heavy punch. Most of his wins have been by way of knockout and that is something to watch out for, but I can also pack a punch and he better watch out because I might knock him out. ”

IVAN PADILLA, BAYAMON SPORTS DIRECTOR
“Bayamon is proud of hosting Danny Garcia vs. Mauricio Herrera. We welcome boxing because we love boxing. We are always ready to be boxing hosts.

“We are able to host events of this magnitude because we have great people that help us put them together.

“We cordially welcome Danny and his father. We know his mom is from here, from Bayamon and we are very proud.”

ERIC GOMEZ, VICE PRESIDENT OF GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS
“It’s always a great pleasure to be back in Puerto Rico. But this time is different because we are bringing a big card to the island with the help of one of the best, PR Best Boxing. They have a great team in Puerto Rico and this is the beginning of something big.

“We are presenting a main event with the fighter of the moment, one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world, Danny Garcia, and this is particularly special for me, because I saw him grow.

“I met Angel and Danny in the Olympic Trials and I saw something special in him. He was a champion in the making.

“I knew he was special the first time I saw him fight as an amateur at the Olympic Trials. His style was unique; he packed a combination of Tito Trinidad, Wilfredo Gomez, Miguel Cotto and Juanma [Juan Manuel Lopez]’s styles, truly impressive. So, to see him here today, being the great champion than he is, is truly special for me. ”

GARCIA EYES FUTURE MAYWEATHER SHOWDOWN SHOULD HE COME THROUGH PUERTO RICO RETURN AGAINST HERRERA THIS WEEKEND LIVE ON BOXNATION

Danny Garcia
LONDON (March 12) – Unified light-welterweight world champion Danny Garcia is unfazed at being overlooked as Floyd Mayweather’s next opponent.

The undefeated 25-year-old knows that victory this Saturday night against Mauricio Herrera, live and exclusive on BoxNation, will herald further calls for him to be the next man to face pound-for-pound king Mayweather.

Having blitzed his way past a host of top names in the 140-pound division, Garcia has emerged as one of boxing’s leading lights and returns to action in Puerto Rico this weekend following his momentous victory over Lucas Matthysse last September.

That time he was fighting on the undercard of Mayweather’s record breaking showdown with Canelo Alvarez, with his highly impressive victory over the feared Argentine Matthysse leading to calls for him to be next to challenge the man headlining the bill.

However, Garcia was overlooked as Mayweather’s May opponent at the expense of the hard-hitting Marcos Maidana, though he is unperturbed by this, despite many believing he should have been in the big money sweepstakes.

“I’m a boxer, at the end of the day I like to fight the best, so you know that’s what my manager wanted, and that’s what my team wanted, and that’s what I want,” Garcia said, speaking on fighting Mayweather.

“Destiny is destiny. I’m okay with whatever happens. I don’t question my manager’s job, I never did, and I think that’s why we’re in the position today where people think I should be fighting him [Mayweather] and people think I deserve to fight because my manager and my promoter did a great job so far.

“We weren’t really pressing for the fight, we just let Golden Boy do their job and I let Al Haymon [manager] do his job. So, I think they’re doing a great job and I’m doing my job, and hopefully the fight might happen one day,” said Garcia.

The WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine light-welterweight world champion is well aware that should he continue to impress up against the skilled Mexican-American Herrera he will be one of the leading candidates to fight Mayweather in the near future.

Philadelphia born Garcia goes in against Herrera in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, where he will be returning to the birth place of his parents and fulfilling a lifetime ambition of fighting on the mountainous island which has produced a host of world champions including Felix Trinidad and Miguel Cotto.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to fight in Puerto Rico, just to reach out to my fans in Puerto Rico, because I am Puerto Rican and they don’t have a champion right now. So I think this gave me the perfect time for me to go over there and show the Puerto Rican fans that they have a true champion,” he said.

“It’s very exciting, because this is where my family’s from, this is where my roots are and it’s something I always asked Richard [Schaefer].

“I think this is very special to me because this is one of my dreams that I always dreamed of, and to go over there and fight in front of all the Puerto Rican fans that are going to be there is amazing. I’ve never fought in an arena where every single fan was mine, and it’s going to be very special to me and I’m going to deliver,” said Garcia.

Despite going in as the favourite to win the fight, and with apparent big fish to fry, Garcia is adamant that he won’t be underestimating Herrera, the last man to beat the highly touted WBO light welterweight world champion Ruslan Provodnikov.

“He’s a good, tough fighter. I know he wants to be world champion and I know he’s going to come to fight, but I fought many amateur fights, I fought the best pros in the world, and I don’t think there’s anything he can show me differently than I already do,” Garcia said.

“So, I’m going to go in there and do what I do best, and that’s go in there, make adjustments, and get the crowd excited,” he added.

The 33-year-old Herrera is used to going against the grain having turned professional fairly late at 27, beating the tough Provodnikov and taking Mike Alvarado the distance in a closely contested decision.

Herrera is under no illusions that he will enter the ring as the underdog when he steps in against Garcia, though, this is nothing new to the man they call ‘El Maestro’.

“I’m feeling like I’m being overlooked,” said Herrera. “And maybe part of that is because I’m not really known, nobody really knows me. I mean, the same way with Provodnikov when he went up against [Tim] Bradley, I mean, I’ve seen comments and hear people say, who’s this guy? Who’s this ESPN guy? He isn’t going to do anything. What is Bradley fighting this guy for? And as you see what happened, you know, it was a different story,” he said.

“But I feel the same way, I mean, when people don’t know who you are and they see you have some losses, they don’t know your whole story and your whole background, and they see a knockout percentage and they go by that too.

“But all that doesn’t matter, with boxing anything can happen. And they’re going to see that I’m at that level, and that I will rise to the occasion,” Herrera said.

DANNY “SWIFT” GARCIA AND MAURICIO “EL MAESTRO” HERRERA MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Danny and Angel Garcia
Kelly Swanson
Thanks, everybody for joining us today for the Danny Garcia and Mauricio Herrera international media conference call. We are going to start first with Mauricio, as well as his trainer, Willie Silva, and then Danny Garcia will be joining us. I would now like to introduce Richard Schaefer, Chief Executive Officer of Golden Boy Promotions who will talk about the fight and make the formal introductions.

Richard Schaefer
Thank you and welcome, everybody to today’s conference call. For Danny Garcia, this fight means coming home, coming home to Puerto Rico. It is the first time he’s going to be fighting there, and for Mauricio Herrera it’s not coming home, but it is taking home. He wants to take home all of those belts back home to Riverside, California, so for both of those guys in a way coming home and taking home is sort of like the slogan of the show here. With Danny Garcia we have what I believe is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, and with Mauricio Herrera we have somebody who has been waiting for this opportunity, who is extremely skilled, knows how to be a spoiler as well, he’s the last man to beat Provodnikov as well, so, I think we have certainly the ingredients for a terrific matchup, and Danny fired on by his crowd there in Puerto Rico and Mauricio wanting to get this belt.

The opening bout on the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast will bring to you one of the most talked about and most exciting heavyweights, Deontay Wilder against Malik Scott, as the 12-round WBC Final Heavyweight Eliminator. The winner of that fight will be immediately fighting the winner of Arreola and Stiverne, so there’s going to be much at stake there as well. Deontay is extremely fan friendly outside of the ring, and of course inside of the ring even more so. He’s a tremendous personality, a tremendous puncher, and a lot of people feel that he is America’s best hope to bring the heavyweight championship back to the United States.

I do want to mention as well that SHOWTIME EXTREME is going live as well with a couple of fights. The main event on the SHOWTIME EXTREME telecast is another mouth-watering showdown with Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez vs. Daniel Ponce De Leon, which obviously is a rematch, a 10-round WBO International Junior Lightweight Championship.

The card takes place a week from Saturday, March 15, at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Puerto Rico, and is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, with promotions in association with PR Best Boxing. I want to thank Peter Rivera, the President of PR Best Boxing, for all his efforts and all his hard work to make this card a reality from Puerto Rico. I want to thank our sponsors, Corona, AT&T and Casamigos Tequila, and want to mention as well that the Wilder/Scott fight is presented in association with Goossen Tutor Promotions.

SHOWTIME starts at 7 p.m. Eastern/Pacific, and SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING will go live at 9 p.m. Eastern/6 p.m. Pacific, and it’s going to be in Spanish as well. Tickets are selling extremely fast. When I talked to Peter he believes it will be a sellout in Bayamon, so please make sure that you let the people know that a limited number of tickets is still available starting at $25, $50, $75, $150, $200 and $400, so make sure if you are in Puerto Rico that you are obviously going to watch this live.

First up I’d like to introduce to you Mauricio Herrera’s trainer, Willie Silva, who will give us some insights on how they have prepared and what the strategy will be, and how the whole camp went, and so on. So if I could please turn it over to Willie Silva.

Willie Silva
I’m happy to be here because I think we’re going to take the fight. We’re going to beat this guy and we’re going to bring this championship to California.

R. Schaefer
Mauricio, they call him “El Maestro” Herrera, with an excellent record of 20 wins and 3 losses, of Riverside, California, is known as a very fierce junior welterweight contender, has been a professional boxer since 2007, and made waves in the welterweight division. And when you are a fighter you obviously always look for these opportunities to go against the best, and there’s no question about it with Danny Garcia, he is the best junior welterweight.

But Mauricio knows a little bit about going in against the best in the division, one of them obviously Junior Welterweight World Champion, Ruslan Provodnikov, I mentioned it before, he’s the last man to beat him. And he is ready to go March 15, he is ready to go into the lion’s den there in Puerto Rico and to take his long awaited job as the World Championship. It’s a pleasure now for me to introduce to you, Mauricio Herrera.

Mauricio Herrera
I want to say thank you to Golden Boy Promotions for the last year for giving me this opportunity to try for a world title. I just want to say that I’m ready and, like I said, I’m never in a boring fight and I know we didn’t take this fight just because it was a world title opportunity, we also took it because we think we can win this fight and it’s going to be a great fight. Like you said, I’m a spoiler, so you’d better look out for that.

Q
My first question is for you, Richard, and then I’m going to go to Mauricio. How much of a danger is there of a let down, given that this is the first time in a while where Danny has been the favorite against a guy that some people don’t think has a real shot?

R. Schaefer
Well, I think it’s going to be a question you’re really going to need to ask Danny. But I do know that suddenly it’s like reverse roles, Danny has always been like the underdog, and never really gotten I think the credit he deserves. But I think with his last performance against Lucas Matthysse he changed a lot of people’s minds and opened a lot of people’s eyes, so I think he’s going to be in a different position. And that certainly is something from a training point of view, I talked to other fighters before, when you do fight somebody where you are the favorite, you know, do you really maybe skip a step here and skip a step there and say, well, you know, that shouldn’t be too difficult after everybody else I fought, and so on. From a mental point of view, I definitely think that that could be the case, but you need to ask Danny that question.

I think going to Puerto Rico might look like an advantage, his homecoming and first time fighting there in the place where his parents were born and his grandparents are living, you know. But that might be not necessarily a positive either because what this does, it puts tremendous additional pressure on Danny to perform because he obviously wants to get the approval of the Puerto Rican people and he wants to perform and entertain in front of the Puerto Rican people. And as I said before, that’s where you enter Mauricio Herrera, who is a known spoiler and who knows how to take advantage of these, maybe, cutting a step here or there in training, or the added pressure in Puerto Rico. Mauricio is going to come with everything to gain and nothing to lose, and these are the opponents that are the most dangerous.

Q
Picking up on something you said about him going to Puerto Rico for the first time, they currently don’t have any champions born there, and obviously he’s a champion, he must feel a certain amount of pressure –

R. Schaefer
Yes, it’s going to be a lot of pressure on Danny during Fight Week, being there in Puerto Rico, absolutely. So, I think, yes, it’s great for Danny to be fighting in Puerto Rico, but since this is the first time, there definitely will be more demands on him, from a public relations stand point, from media, from fans, and from whatsoever, so all that are points which Mauricio Herrera, I’m sure knows and is ready to exploit.

Q
Mauricio, it occurred to me that you might know how to make guys uncomfortable in the ring. Do you see this as that same opportunity, as a similar opportunity to call yourself a spoiler?

M. Herrera
Oh yes, most definitely, I think my style does that to the guys, especially the stronger guys, my style tends to come out and blossom even more. And I feel that this fight, I know when Danny fights he is fighting tough and no-namers, but I don’t think it takes a really tough guy and a big name to beat Danny. It could just be a random guy like me who has some skills, some smartness in their arsenal and again an awkward style that can defeat Danny. And that’s what I’m going in really confident for.

Q
What is your style, how do you neutralize what other guys do well? Because he’s been in there with Erik Morales, he’s been in there with Zab Judah, he’s been in there with Amir Khan, athletic types, and of course Kendall Holt who once dropped Tim Bradley, what can you bring to the table that none of those guys did in terms of your style?

M. Herrera
I think the biggest difference between me and those guys is a lot of those guys had a lot of amateur backgrounds. You know, I don’t have a big amateur background, so I’m not following with the basic punches and rhythms as those guys have and that Danny can see and is used to, you know, I’m a little off rhythm on my shots. And also I drill with power at times, and sometimes I have no power, sometimes I go with speed and I can go inside, I can control distance, and I’m hard to hit, if you’ve seen my fights, so I think all of that will make a big difference from those fights and from me.

Q
Do you feel like that in the Provodnikov fight some people thought that maybe he deserved to win, but in the Alvarado fight that you kind of maybe got ripped off a little bit? How do you see the result of those two fights, since they’re the two biggest names that you faced, both of them, who went on to win world titles?

M. Herrera
Yes, I felt that with the Provodnikov fight, it was a close fight but I felt I had landed more punches, so I felt comfortable that I was going to take it. Even Provodnikov himself said he felt that I won, that I was a better man that night and outsmarted him. With Alvarado it was a different fight, I fought a different style with him. We went in there trying to push him back, he’s a bigger, tougher guy and with him, which I got to show a lot too, and I thought that fight was pretty close too. I mean, if you see that fight, Alvarado missed a lot of shots, so either way I felt like, you know what, going into his turf, his promotion, that the judges were going to be on his side. Only one judge gave me one round, so when I saw that I figured I had no chance even if I won three or four rounds more. You can see the way they were judging I was not going to make that decision. But I thought it was a very close fight. I mean, I did take punishment on my face, but those were like three, four big shots that he took on me, but I thought it was a very close fight. Yes, so I thought with Alvarado it was close, and with Provodnikov it could have gone either way as well.

Q
Do you feel like you’re being overlooked a little bit in this fight with the type of opposition that you have faced?

M. Herrera
Yes, I’m feeling like I’m being overlooked. And maybe part of that is because I’m not really known, nobody really knows me. I mean, the same way with Provodnikov when he went up against Bradley, I mean, I’ve seen comments and hear people say, who’s this guy? Who’s this ESPN guy? He isn’t going to do anything. What is Bradley fighting this guy for? And as you see what happened, you know, it was a different story. But I feel the same way, I mean, when people don’t know who you are and they see you have some losses, they don’t know your whole story and your whole background, and they see a knockout percentage and they go by that too. But all that doesn’t matter, you know, with boxing anything can happen. And they’re going to see that I’m at that level, and that I will rise to the occasion.

Q
Mauricio, you said that your style was a little complicated, you have a different kind of style, what kind of style does Danny have and how will you fight him, how would you describe Danny?

M. Herrera
Well, you know Danny’s a very good fighter. I’m going to have to watch out for everything. He’s got a good right hand, he’s got a good left hand. I’m going to have to be careful. I’m going to have to pick my spots, know when to fight him inside, and know when to box, so I have to be careful with everything. It’s going to be a tough fight.

Q
Richard mentioned that Danny has added pressure, he’s fighting in Puerto Rico, there might be distractions, do you think that’s an advantage for you? Does that make you comfortable to know that you’re at ease, that you don’t have that?

M. Herrera
You know, I’m not really at ease. I can’t say I’m at ease because it is going to be a tough fight. But, yes, he’s going to have some added pressure. He’s going to want to win for his people. He’s going to be fighting in Puerto Rico, he’s going to want to win for them, and obviously, you know, I’m going to use that to my advantage. But, yes, but it’s not going to be an easy fight. I’m not at ease. There is going to be some pressure on my part as well.

Q
Mauricio, you came close to fighting a world title fight before against Brandon Rios, how did you feel when that fight disintegrated?

M. Herrera
Well, I was kind of disappointed. I thought maybe that was my time to shine. Brandon Rios was a perfect opponent. And, yes, for a reason I guess that didn’t happen, which didn’t matter, I mean, because now I’m fighting for another big fight and I guess this is now my time.

Q
And you explained a little bit about Danny Garcia, but how do you beat a Danny Garcia, in your opinion, with your style?

M. Herrera
Well, as you should know, I throw a lot of punches. I use the jab very well. A lot of fighters don’t use the jab. I don’t think Danny is used to seeing that. You know, I can come out different ways. I can come out to pressure him. I can come out to box. I’ve shown that I can do a little bit of both. And I have really great defense. I think the defense is the main key. You know, I’m not that easy to hit and I have a very good chin. So, I know I can out punch a guy and it’s not going to be an easy fight, but when it gets down and when we have to go and exchange, you know, I can do that too. So, I’m really ready on all angles.

Q
You started as a professional very late. You were already in your late twenties when you finally started. What kept you from turning professional?

M. Herrera
Well, I started when I was 13, but my first trainer, Rudy, just kept training me along and just helping the next fighters that were coming in, I was getting older. And you know it was funny because he said that I was always too young to go pro, and I was in my twenties, and by the time I told him I wanted to go pro I was like 25, 26, then he told me I was too old. So, it wasn’t going to happen, so I left, I had to leave him. I was very dedicated with him, but I had to part ways at that time and train on my own for a while, and then that’s how I got connected with Willy, so connection to some pro fights, and at 27 I turned pro. And I don’t think it’s bad after five years that I got a chance to fight for a world title, and I thank the Garcia’s again for giving me the opportunity.

W. Silva
I have a comment. Danny Garcia never faced a guy like Mauricio Herrera and it’s going to be a nightmare that night.

R. Schaefer
Before I’m going to turn it over to Danny, I want to make some opening comments. Obviously, Danny Garcia, what he has achieved in the last few years I think there is no fighter in no weight class who has done that outside of Danny Garcia and Floyd Mayweather, and that is taking on the best. And when you look at what he has accomplished, we know all the names, I mean, it really is like the Who’s Who of the Junior Welterweight Division, some of the biggest names in the sport, period, he has taken on, and in most of those fights he went in as the underdog, people were not giving him much respect, but I think all that’s changed. In his last performance against Lucas Matthysse I think he made everybody believers.

What is particularly impressive and why I think as well that he is obviously the Unified Super Lightweight World Champion currently, clearly the number one rated Super Lightweight boxer in the world, but in my books after Floyd and Andre Ward I believe because of what Danny has achieved cumulative, fight after fight and how he has shown how he has been dealing with speed, the fastest guy in the sport may be Amir Khan, how he neutralized that speed, he was confused, he evaded the first few rounds, but then adjusted, adapted and dominated the fight. How he took away the power of the biggest puncher maybe in the sport, Lucas Matthysse, and how he took away the experience for maybe two of the most experienced fighters to date, next to Bernard Hopkins, Zab Judah and Erik Morales, so this guy knows how to deal with speed at the highest level, with power at the highest level, and with experience at the highest level.

I mean, you look at that and you do that fight after fight after fight, I really believe the pound for pound list is reserved for exactly people like that, not because they had one great fight or had an amateur career and things like that. No, you earned that spot. And I think if one guy has earned it it’s Danny Garcia, and I believe that Danny Garcia today, in my list, is number three pound for pound as well. I don’t have to tell you all the achievements he’s done. He is exciting. He is a terrific fighter, we know that. He’s a tremendous person, human being outside of the ring as well, always fun to be around with, and it really is an honor for me to be able to work for Danny Garcia and for his team.

And it is a pleasure now for me to turn it over and introduce to you the undisputed Super Lightweight World Champion, Danny “Swift” Garcia.

Danny Garcia
Thank you, Richard. I love being a part of the Golden Boy family, and thanks to all the media for tuning in, and thanks for everybody in Golden Boy. I’m ready for March 15.

Q
Can you talk about when it first became something in your mind, that you said to yourself, ‘I would really love to go and fight in Puerto Rico,’ even though you weren’t born there, but you certainly have a lot of roots there with your family.

D. Garcia
Yes, it’s always been a dream of mine to fight in Puerto Rico, just to reach out to my fans in Puerto Rico, because I am Puerto Rican and they don’t have a champion right now, so I think this gave me the perfect time for me to go over there and show the Puerto Rican fans that they have a true champion. And I’m excited about it. It’s always been a dream of mine to fight in Puerto Rico, and it happened, and I thank Golden Boy for that, for making it happen.

Q
Have you visited Puerto Rico in the past?

D. Garcia
Yes, I visited Puerto Rico before. I was there a few times. I was there like a year and a half ago, and I think I was there as a kid.

Q
Are your parents both born there? I think Angel was, but I’m not sure if they were both born there.

D. Garcia
Yes, my mom and dad are born in Puerto Rico.

Q
So, do you still have family members that live there?

D. Garcia
Yes, my whole dad’s side of the family lives in Puerto Rico, and my mom’s side of the family, they moved to the States when they were young.
Q
I don’t know, do you get the feeling from those that you’ve spoken to that are there, either family members or friends of your family, that people are excited to have the fight and that they’re going to adopt you as their champion, basically, because of your Puerto Rican heritage?

D. Garcia
Yes, they love me, and they can’t wait. They call me and tell me every day that people in Puerto Rico they love me and they’re excited for the fight and they’re going to the fight, so there’s no doubt in my mind that the people in Puerto Rico are going to be there for me that night.

Q
Can you talk about what went into the fact that you aren’t Floyd’s next opponent? I don’t know if it was that he didn’t want to fight you. I’ve been told that your camp decided that you would love to fight Floyd at some point but not right now and maybe in the future. Can you address that a little bit?

D. Garcia
You know, I let Al Haymon do what he does and I’ll let Richard do what they do. We weren’t really pressing for the fight, we just let Golden Boy do their job and I let Al do his job. I never question what Al does, I never question what my team does, so whoever they tell me to fight, I’ll fight and I’ll train and I’ll get ready for it.

Q
Would you have wanted Mayweather?

D. Garcia
I’m a boxer, at the end of the day I like to fight the best, so you know that’s what my manager wanted, and that’s what my team wanted, and that’s what I want.

Q
So you’re okay that you go from the potential of fighting Floyd for all that money and all that glory, to fighting a good fighter like Herrera, but certainly nobody’s going to mistake Mauricio Herrera with Floyd, are you okay with that?

D. Garcia
Destiny is destiny. I’m okay with whatever happens. Like I said before, I don’t question my manager’s job, I never did, and I think that’s why we’re in the position today where people think I should be fighting him and people think I deserve to fight because my manager and my promoter did a great job so far. So, I think they’re doing a great job and I’m doing my job, and hopefully the fight might happen one day.

Q
Was any part of that in your mind about the fact that, you know, you’re still a young fighter, you’re only 25-years-old, that you really weren’t in any particular hurry to go to 147 pounds? Are you comfortable with 140 and you figured you wanted to stay there for a little while longer? Was weight an issue in your mind?

D. Garcia
Yes, like you said, I’m still young, I’m 25-years-old, and I’m growing, I’m building my own legacy, and 140, it’s a little hard to make, it’s a sacrifice, but I’m pretty sure once I go up to 147 it’s going to be hard too. So I don’t think the weight was an issue, but I feel like you know I grew into the 140 pound weight class and I feel really strong, I feel real good making the weight, and I feel so good in the gym, so I didn’t feel like it was possible for me to move up yet.

R. Schaefer
I just want to quickly add to that. The experience of fighting in Puerto Rico was actually something Danny had personally spoken to me for the past couple of years or so, during fights he comes to me and he’s telling me, ‘I’ve got to fight in Puerto Rico. You’ve got to do a fight in Puerto Rico.’ And so when you look at the guys he fought in the last couple of years, it wasn’t just really natural to take a fight like that to Puerto Rico, but we felt this was the perfect opportunity to fulfill one of Danny’s dreams, which was to fight in Puerto Rico. And, I hope it’s the first of many.

I think as it relates to Floyd, I’m getting more and more questions, hey, is Danny going to fight Floyd, and so there’s more and more excitement building up about that fight, so assuming Floyd handles the challenges ahead of him, do I believe that maybe sometime next year, maybe a year from now, Cinco de Mayo 2015 we might see, assuming Floyd keeps on winning, are going to see a Floyd, Danny Garcia fight? Absolutely. And I can just imagine how much of an anticipated showdown that will be. And, Danny, you just heard that, how mature he is in answering your questions. And, yes, he’s young and he’s going to be ready, and if the opportunity would be today he’ll fight him today, but, you know everything at its time.

Q
I just wanted to clarify, do you know when the first time you went to Puerto Rico was?

D. Garcia
About two years ago.

Q
Your mom said that you always dreamed of being a world champion, what allowed you to have such large dreams?

D. Garcia
You know, being the world champion was everything to me. My dream was always, first, to go to the Olympics and get gold, and then turn pro, but that didn’t happen. And so I just stayed focused, I trained hard, and I became World Champion and I’m proud.

Q
When did you start training and stuff like that? As soon as you walked into the gym, or did it take a few years?

D. Garcia
No, when I walked into the gym when I was a kid everybody used to say, ‘Olympics, Olympics,’ so I really didn’t know what it was until I did my research and I was like, wow, the Olympics sound big, so I made that my goal, because everybody else kind of wanted to go to the Olympics and stuff like that, so I wanted to win gold and become world champion. But I’m happy that I’m world champion, and I’m here.

Q
Danny, I’d like your take on what Richard said about you being number three pound for pound behind Floyd and Ward.

D. Garcia
I fought the best, I never turned down a fight, I beat the best, and I think the pound for pound list is about fighting the best and beating the best. And like he said, there are a few good fighters out there who did it, and I’m one of them.

Q
I’d like also your scouting report, your assessment technically, especially of Mauricio Herrera, a lot of people who will be tuning in haven’t seen him, he’s on ESPN a lot, but I’d like your assessment of Herrera, please.

D. Garcia
Oh yes, he’s a good, tough fighter. I know he wants to be world champion and I know he’s going to come to fight, but I fought many amateur fights, I fought the best pros in the world, and I don’t think there’s anything he can show me differently than I already do. So, I’m going to go in there and do what I do best, and that’s go in there, make adjustments, and get the crowd excited.

Q
Is Angel trying to be a little bit more chill and not stir up the pot? Where’s Angel?

D. Garcia
No, he’s a businessman, so he’s probably out there handling business or getting something done. He’s always on the move. He doesn’t like to be in one spot. You know he’s all over the place, but he’ll be there March 15.

Q
Was there any need for you and your father to have the conversation about hey, Danny, this is a big opportunity, but don’t be let down, you’re the favorite, but we can’t afford a letdown.

D. Garcia
Man, I train hard for every fight. I put 110 percent in the gym. All I know is hard work and dedication, so there’s no thought in my mind saying that I’m going to let anybody down, because I know what I bring to the fight. I know how hard I work in the gym, and no matter who believes in me, or who thinks I’m a winner, or who thinks I’m not going to win in future or past fights, I know what I’m capable of doing. I know how hard I work. And that’s why every time at the end of the fight I come out victorious because I know the pain and the sacrifice that I put my body through to win these fights and excite my fans.

Q
Have you and your father had any conversation about not getting distracted when you get over there because people are going to demand that you go here, you’re going to have to make this appearance, you’re going to be possibly embraced as a Puerto Rican champion?

D. Garcia
No, we’re not going to get distracted. We know what we’ve got to do. We’re going to do the same thing we always do, we’re going to stay focused until Friday night and then we’re going to get the job done. And then after that we can make the trips and go visit whoever we want to visit.

Q
Along the names that you’ve fought, Morales, Holt, Amir Khan, Nate Campbell, Zab Judah, is there anything that Mauricio can show you, he says he’s different from all of them, is there anything that he can show you that you haven’t seen?

D. Garcia
I mean, we’ll just have to see. We’ll just have to see. You know, talk is cheap. You know me, I’ve never been the one to talk and say what he’s going to do or what he can do. I’m just going to go in there and do what I do best, and that’s win the fight. I’m not really worried about what he’s going to do. As long as my head’s on my shoulders and I’m focused, I know I’m going to get the job done.

Q
First of all, where are you in the stages of your training?

D. Garcia
You know I’m still going hard. I’m still training hard. I’m at my peak right now and I feel great, man, and my weight is great. I’m ready to fight tomorrow. So, I’m on cruise control.

Q
What’s the most exciting thing about the fact that you’re about to fight in Puerto Rico for the first time?

D. Garcia
It’s very exciting, because this is where my family’s from, this is where my roots are and it’s something I always asked Richard. And I think this is very special to me because this is one of my dreams that I always dreamed of, and to go over there and fight in front of all the Puerto Rican fans that are going to be there is amazing. I’ve never fought in an arena where every single fan was mine, and it’s going to be very special to me and I’m going to deliver.

Q
When Rocky Martinez lost his title and there was a lot of buzz about Puerto Rico not having a world champion, you tweeted, “Puerto Rico still has one champion.” What motivated you to get that tweet out?

D. Garcia
I don’t think it’s fair that you can say I’m not a Puerto Rican fighter because I wasn’t born in Puerto Rico, when my blood is Puerto Rican. So I had to let the fans know, hey, I’m a Puerto Rican fighter and that’s just the way it is, and March 15 that’s why we got this fight in Puerto Rico, to solidify me as a Puerto Rican champion.

Q
Do you get more excited about fighting in your homeland?

D. Garcia
Yes, I’m very excited about fighting in my homeland. It’s always been a dream of mine, and I can’t wait. I know that the fans in Puerto Rico are very excited, I’m very excited, and it’s going to be a grand show that night.

Q
So, if the fight is successful for you, are you hoping to come back and fight in Puerto Rico again?

D. Garcia
Yes, I would love to. I would love to. You know, first we’ve got to handle March 15, and in the future if there’s an opportunity, I’m always down for it. Let’s do it.

Q
I want Danny to elaborate on this opponent, when it was first brought up, hey, this is the guy that we want to fight, how did you and your team take that, and did it take long for you guys to agree to it?

D. Garcia
As soon as they told me about it, just like any other opponent, we never turned down an opponent. We believe in destiny, so whomever they say is the person, that’s the person that we accept and that’s the person that we fight. It was never, no, we want to fight him, or we want to fight him, because you know we never do that. We just believe in destiny. Whoever it is, it is, and that’s who we fight.

Q
Do you have any surprise guests at your ring entrance like guys like maybe Daddy Yankee, Tito Trinidad, somebody like kind of a signal of welcoming you to the island with open arms. Any people like that?

D. Garcia
We’ve got something in mind. We’ve got something in mind. But I don’t want to say something, I don’t want to spoil it, or if it don’t happen. Wei’re working on something and hopefully everything goes well.

Q
Have you seem the Provodnikov-Herrera fight, and did you see anything in that fight that worries you?

D. Garcia
I have seen the fight, it was a good fight. He did what he had to do. He outboxed the Russian guy, the Russian guy is strong and he got the victory. But, you know, that was a good fight to him, but he’s fighting a whole different kind of animal this fight, and I’m going to show that March 15.

Q
How do you control the emotions and not overlook a fighter like Herrera?

D. Garcia
I’ve just got to stay relaxed. I’ve got to stay focused just like I have been every other fight. I’ve got to listen to my trainer. I’ve got to stay calm. And I’ve got to go in there and get the momentum from the first round and get the crowd into it, and then win the fight.

Q
Did you used to follow some of the Puerto Rican fighters like Miguel Cotto, Tito Trinidad and some of the other fighters that have made Puerto Rico one of the best islands for boxing?

D. Garcia
Oh yes, most definitely. I was a Trinidad fan as a little kid. I’ve seen all his fights. I’ve seen Miguel for his whole career. I’ve seen a lot of the great fighters, so I’ve always been a fan of the Puerto Rican fighters and I’m happy to be one myself.

Q
Now that you mentioned that, how do you feel Juan Manuel Lopez is also fighting on the card?

D. Garcia
It’s a blessing. I think it only right to have another Puerto Rican fighter, another Puerto Rican star on the card. So it’s going to be a great night of boxing, it’s going to be a great night for the Puerto Ricans.

Q
Richard, if Danny’s successful will you bring it back here and do you think that would help you with pay-per-view for a possible Mayweather vs. Garcia fight?

R. Schaefer
Well, I think the Puerto Rican fans are great fans. They’re very passionate about boxing. And so based on what I’ve heard from Peter Rivera ticket sales are very strong, and we do anticipate to sell out at the arena. So, yes, the plan is that this is not just a one-off, and I know that Danny would love to go back to Puerto Rico as well, so you know, I can definitely see additional fights, future fights, taking place in Puerto Rico with Danny if everything goes well.

And yes, as it relates to, I think Puerto Rico wants to embrace a champion and Danny Garcia has an opportunity to become one of the best Puerto Rican champions based on what he has accomplished already. And I am sure if, and when a Floyd Mayweather fight happens that the Puerto Ricans are going to be very, very much into Danny and cheering on their man.

I’m going to have Danny make the closing statement, but I just want to quickly jump again on what I said before, because I think there were some follow up questions made and maybe I did stir the pot a bit here with the declaring Danny Garcia as the number three pound for pound fighter in the world, but I really honestly, from my heart, believe that pound for pound with this list is not about just one fight, like you look at a guy like Rigondeaux, who is a great fighter but he has really one good win. Or you look at like Klitschko, who had many great fights but the quality of his opposition is just not really there.

But Danny is fortunate that he is in a weight class, or weight classes, where the biggest and best names are fighting at and Danny never turns down a fight or a fighter, and he takes everybody on, and when he went into that fight with Matthysse all of you media guys, and I mean all of you, maybe with the exception of one or two, picked Matthysse to win. I think Danny was a 9-1 underdog, something like that, and people even said he was scared and shit like that. You know, and you saw what he did. You saw what he did. Every single time this guy steps up, and it is time now, and I hardly ever get this outspoken as that, and you guys know that, it is time now that Danny Garcia gets the proper respect.

Danny, I look forward to seeing you, and I’m going to turn it over to you now to make your closing comments.

D. Garcia
I’ll see you March 15, Richard. Oh man, I’m very excited to be fighting in Puerto Rico in front of my fans. I had a tremendous camp, I ran hundreds of miles, and I did what I had to do at the gym. I’m just happy to be going there March 15 and giving my fans in Puerto Rico a great fight and showing them why I’m one of the best fighters in the world. I’m very excited and my team is excited, and my fans are excited, and I’m my family’s excited, and I can’t wait to go out on March 15 and give the fans a great fight all around the world. Thank you, guys. I’ll see you March 15 in Puerto Rico.

DANNY GARCIA VS. MAURICIO HERRERA FIGHTERS’ TRAINING CAMP UPDATE

Danny and Angel Garcia
BAYAMON, P.R. (March 3, 2014) – Unified Super Lightweight World Champion Danny “Swift” Garcia, Top Lightweight Contender Mauricio Herrera, WBC Continental Americas Heavyweight Champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder, heavyweight contender Malik “King” Scott, , WBO International Junior Lightweight Champion Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez and Former WBC Featherweight World Champion Daniel Ponce De Leon are deep in training camp for their respective March 15 bouts in Puerto Rico live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT) and SHOWTIME EXTREME (7 p.m. ET/PT).

Here is what the fighters have to say about how their camps are going and how they feel about the night of action coming up on Saturday, March 15, at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez.

Where are you training and when did you start?

Danny Garcia: “I’ve been training in Philadelphia for about eight weeks.”

Mauricio Herrera: “I started training the day I signed for this fight. I’ve been training out of Riverside, Calif. at a gym called Capital Punishment Gym with my trainer Jose Torres.”

Deontay Wilder: “I’m training back home in Tuscaloosa, Ala.. I’ve been training non-stop since my last fight but officially started sparring on Feb. 17.”

Malik Scott: “I’ve been training at the Ten Goose Boxing Gym since about mid-January.”

Juan Manuel Lopez: “I have been training at the Caimito Gym since the beginning of January. It is the same gym used by Tito Trinidad for many of his fights and also by Oscar De La Hoya while he was in Puerto Rico.”

Daniel Ponce de Leon: “I’ve been training for about a month at my gym in Montebello, Calif..”

If you had to pick the most challenging camp moment, what would that be and why?

Danny Garcia: “Losing weight and sparring is always the toughest challenge in training camp.”

Mauricio Herrera: “This camp has not only been the toughest, but it’s been the smartest. I have changed things that didn’t work for me in my past camps and implemented more things that work.”

Deontay Wilder: “I would have to say it’s working with the Wladimir Klitschko camp. A lot of great moments all around with that camp. I came with questions and left with answers.”

Malik Scott: “We’ve had a smooth training camp so we haven’t had one.”

Juan Manuel Lopez: “The whole camp has been somewhat challenging because it is the first time I am training in a different gym that is far from the one I normally use.”

Daniel Ponce De Leon: “The most difficult situation for a fighter is to make weight. I recognize that I was struggling in my last two fights to make the junior featherweight division.”

What are your thoughts on your opponent now that you are deep in training?

Danny Garcia: “Mauricio is a tough fighter but I am 110 percent ready; come March 15 it will be another epic performance by me.”

Mauricio Herrera: “I don’t see Danny Garcia as any different than anyone else. I don’t want to hold him way up on a pedestal the way his dad does. Danny Garcia is just like me. We both bleed and we both feel pain.”

Deontay Wilder: “I think Malik will come to fight and make this heavyweight showdown one of the best to come this year. So many people are super excited about this matchup that they can’t stop talking about it and that’s what the heavyweight division needs. I love the excitement and I’m very happy to be a part of bringing the division back to where it once was.”

Malik Scott: “All my thoughts are on staying focused and getting ready for March 15.”

Juan Manuel Lopez: ” This will be a difficult fight for me. I am sure that it will be different than the first one.”

Daniel Ponce de Leon: “Juan Manuel Lopez is a tough fighter. He has power and I know he will never lose his power. I expect a tough fight.”

How do you feel about fighting in Puerto Rico?

Danny Garcia: “Fighting in Puerto Rico is a dream come true. I’m very excited and I can’t wait to give my fans in Puerto Rico a great show.”

Mauricio Herrera: “I feel great about fighting in Puerto Rico. There is a lot of love for the sport of boxing in Puerto Rico, so that gives me more incentive to bring everything I’ve got to the ring. In the end, I’ll fight anywhere. The ring can be in Puerto Rico, Riverside or Las Vegas. It’s a different crowd but the ring and my desire to win is the same.”

Deontay Wilder: “I’m super excited about fighting in Puerto Rico. I look at it like this beautiful island, beautiful weather and beautiful people. I love traveling and one day want a home there near the beach.”

Malik Scott: “All I know is, inside the ring it will be like home.”

Juan Manuel Lopez: “I am super happy to be fighting in Puerto Rico and I see it asa great opportunity for my career.”

Daniel Ponce De Leon: “I feel fine about fighting in Puerto Rico. I don’t have any pressure. I know I am in his house but a lot of people will enjoy the fight.”
