Haye vs Bellew

By Michael Serra

Month after next, Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom outfit put on what many feel will be one of the most explosive of meetings to take place in a British ring in many a year!

Liverpool’s Tony Bellew whose the proud possessor of the WBC’s cruiserweight crown is moving up to heavy to take on former World cruiser and WBA heavy king David Haye in a battle of punchers.

Londoner Haye first boxed at heavy way back in 2006, though many will argue it was in 2008 when he stopped Monte Barret, his first win at heavy saw him stop West Ham’s Garry Delaney in emphatic fashion!
Bellew at the time was still boxing amateur and did indeed box himself as a heavy winning an ABA title, though as a pro, Bellew has never boxed at heavy, mainly campaigning in the light heavy and cruiser divisions, with mixed success.

Bellew’s first World title chance came at 175 against Welshman and fierce rival Nathan Cleverley, before succumbing to a points defeat, Bellew bounced back and had a crack at the WBC king Adonis Stevenson before getting stopped in a brave effort, with that the scouser moved up to cruiser where after a series of lukewarm performances got Bellew a crack at the vacant title, in which despite finding himself on the deck in the opener, came back to stop and win the WBC title, an impressive stoppage last time out of number 1 challenger BJ Flores in front of a certain ringside guest, no prizes for guessing!

Bellew after the destruction, made no secret of his dislike has he attempted to rush at Haye, whom calmly smiled at the rampaging champion! Screaming obscenities from the ring, Bellew kept calling the handsome Londoner Sponge Bob Square pants, a character from a children’s programme from over here in England.
There and then the fight had been has good as made, at the hastily arranged press conference, things got a little out of hand has the two giving the usual photo shoot with the typical staredown! Haye took a swing at Bellew, however it was more handbags than anything!

An interesting conversation took place has promoter Eddie Hearn and Haye began to trade insults, while Bellew just sat quietly….not for too much longer though!

This is a fight that many will deem as a fight that won’t see the final gong, both possess explosive power, though Bellew is if you like largely untested at heavy, some believe Bellew may have the proverbial punchers chance, while the general consensues and smart money lies with Haye!

Bellew is in a win win situation, if he loses, he will have cashed in on a massive payday, plus he will still be WBC cruiserweight champion, on the other hand Haye if he should lose has no where to go, if he wins then he possibly won’t get the credit and the school of thought will be that he only beat up a beefed up cruiser, yet again, he will get a payday and then the possibility of a World title chance may well loom! DAVIES FACES MATHEWS ON HAYE VS. BELLEW UNDERCARD

Ohara Davies will defend his WBC Silver Super-Lightweight title against ‘Dirty’ Derry Mathews on the undercard of the David Haye vs. Tony Bellew’s Heavyweight blockbuster on March 4 at The O2 in London, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Undefeated Davies won a unanimous decision over Andrea Scarpa at Wembley Arena in November and had called out Mathews on Twitter after the Liverpool fighter’s Commonwealth Lightweight title defeat to Luke Campbell a month earlier.

Former World title challenger Mathew’s has stepped up a division to answer that call and as he hunts to get back in the mix for major honours, but Davies has promised to KO his opponent into retirement at The O2.

“I’m happy the fans finally get the fight they want to see,” said Davies. “For Derry, I’m happy he has got the fight that he wants but what both the fans and Derry must understand is, I’m not here to play.

“I’m here to win World titles. Derry Mathews’ name must be added to my KO record for me to continue the journey.

“Come March 4 I will be in the best shape of my life, and I will retire Derry Mathews for good.”

Mathews said: “I have to shut him up, he’s done my head in. I just want to smash him to bits.

“I don’t know where all this has come from because I don’t know the kid – is it all for publicity or is he really that mouthy and disrespectful? I’ve never met him so I couldn’t say, but he seems a strange one.

“He’s got a chip on his shoulder. I think over my career I’ve gained the respect of my fans by the fights that I’ve been in. He’s trying to get a big-name fight by calling people out on Twitter, badmouthing people. As soon as I was offered the fight I jumped at it. I want to beat him bad.

“There will be lots of Scousers there but I think half of London wants me to beat him too. He’s got a horrible attitude and he comes across badly on social media. He’s trying to be a bad boy but he’s hanging out with TV stars from TOWIE. I don’t know what he is – is he a London bad boy or an Essex TV star? I don’t think he knows himself, but I know he’ll be getting in a cab home after the fight with Arg and no belt.

“He’s the WBC Silver champion but I think he’s been handed that on a plate – it’s the same belt that Callum Smith and Luke Campbell have and they’ll fight for World titles this year. Davies shouldn’t be on a par with them, so I am going to rip that belt off him and get my name back in the mix and this time at 10st.

“I always spar around 10st 4lbs and I feel better, and I think that even though I am moving up I will be the bigger man in there. That extra weight is going to add to my power and strength.”

Tickets for Haye vs. Bellew sold out in record-breaking time when they went on sale in December.

HAYE AND BELLEW PULLED APART AT FIERY PRESS CONFERENCE

david-haye
David Haye and Tony Bellew had to be separated at the launch press conference for their Heavyweight blockbuster on March 4 at The O2 in London, live on Sky Sports Box Office – with tickets selling out in record-breaking time.

Haye and Bellew goaded each other during a tense back and forth at the top table and as they lined up to pose for head-to-head photos, tensions boiled over and the pair had to be restrained by security personnel.

Before the fracas, both fighters stated their cases for victory strongly, with Haye saying he’s too powerful for the Liverpool star and Bellew telling him if it comes down to heart he’ll prevail.

“This is the fight that the public want to see – they want me to shut Tony Bellew up,” said Haye. “I will end the whenever I want, it’s completely up to me. I will dominate Tony Bellew on March 4.

“He thinks he can KO me? Look at all the Heavyweights I’ve boxed that have hit me with 10oz gloves and not put me down – but the past is all irrelevant as I’m going to destroy him.”

“The difference between me and him is, I want to fight,” said Bellew. “The last time he was in a fight was five years ago, I’ve done what I’ve done in the ring – while he’s been partying in nightclubs, I’ve been in the ring and in the gym.

“I want to fight, I enjoy fighting; he hates it. We get in the ring on March 4, you can say what you want about me, I don’t stop, I keep coming and I don’t fear him. He thinks I’m scared of him – he talks nonsense.

“All these demands he’s put in the contract, the size of the ring and the canvas has to be this thick – I am not going to run from him. I had one demand, to pick my own gloves, that’s it. It’s not about anyone else but me and him. Right me off at your peril, I’ve proved everyone wrong so far. If this comes down to heart and courage, he’s in big trouble.”

HAYE AND BELLEW CLASH IN HEAVYWEIGHT BLOCKBUSTER

david-haye
David Haye and Tony Bellew will clash in a Heavyweight blockbuster at The O2 in London on March 4, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

The big-hitting pair will finally settle their differences in the ring having clashed explosively on Sky Sports in Liverpool in October when Bellew defended his WBC World Cruiserweight title against BJ Flores, with the Liverpool star calling Haye out after knocking Flores out. Haye and Bellew exchanged angry words and had to be separated by security – but on March 4 there will be no parting them.
Former two-weight World champion Haye returned from a three and a half year absence from the ring in January at The O2 with a first round KO win over Mark De Mori, following that in the same setting four months later with a second round KO win over Arnold Gjergjaj. The ‘Hayemaker’ has dominated the ring for over a decade, crowned the Cruiserweight King, unifying the division in March 2008 with a fine win over Enzo Maccarinelli again at The O2. Then added The WBA World Heavyweight Championship to his impressive CV 18 months later against Nikolai Valuev – becoming the second boxer in history to win World Titles at both weight divisions.
“The public demand for me to violently knockout Tony ‘The Bell-End’ Bellew was simply too strong,” said Haye. “The country is fed up of his constant yapping. Even in his home town of Liverpool, I would be stopped in the street by people begging me to spectacularly send him into retirement.

“Bellew is completely delusional if he thinks he can beat me. He still thinks he’s on the set of Creed and there will be some kind of Rocky style happy ending. But come March 4th at The 02 in London I will bring reality crashing down on him.

“I’ve earned my credentials the hard way inside the ring, not on film sets. There will be no second takes, no stunt men taking the blows and no flashing lights on the red carpet, the only lights Bellew will see are those of the spot lights shining down on him when he wakes up from his nap on the canvas.”

Bellew became a World champion in stunning fashion in the summer when he climbed off the canvas in the first round against hard-hitting Ilunga Makabu to win the WBC Cruiserweight title with a devastating third round KO at Goodison Park in May – the home of his beloved Everton FC. ‘The Bomber’s’ success came at the third attempt having twice boxed for World titles at Light-Heavyweight before moving to Cruiserweight where he exacted revenge for one of his World title reverses against old rival Nathan Cleverly then landing the European crown against Mateusz Masternak before becoming World champion.

“I’ve backed him into a corner, left him nowhere to go, and now I have what I want,” said Bellew. “I’m not under any illusions, I know exactly what I am going up against, it’s big risk, big reward.

“I cop him with my best punch, he’s going to sleep. He cops me with his best punch, more than likely I am going to sleep too. I know what I am up against but the big factor for me is, I’m a very active fighter, I’ve had no breaks and I’ve got very little wear and tear on me. If it comes down to a question of heart and determination I win hands down. If it comes down to one punch, it’s a 50-50.

“He hasn’t been in a hard fight for over five years. The last time he had a gut check, he failed it. Going into this fight I 100 per cent know that he does not want it as much as me and he is not going to be as brave as me.

“Everyone knows I get off the floor and I fight until the finish. I know the minute it gets tough for David Haye, he’s going to spew it. He thinks he can beat me up in one round with one hand. He’s in for a rude awakening, because if this fight gets hard, and I expect it to be the hardest night of my life, this clown expects a walk in the park and he’s in for a bad night.”

“This is just a huge, huge fight,” said Eddie Hearn. “One of the best Heavyweights in the world against the best Cruiserweight in the world. An explosion of concussive punchers riddled with bad blood and desperate to score a knockout victory. The build-up will be electric as will fight night, I like millions of fight fans around the world cannot wait!”

“This is quite simply a must-see fight,” said Adam Smith, Sky Sports’ Head of Boxing Two of the biggest personalities and punchers in world boxing will collide in a cracking confrontation which has everything. Both men have been fantastic pundits for us in 2016 and it’s fitting that we’ll show their heavyweight bout exclusively live in what should be a rocking O2 Arena.”

HAYE: PUT YOUR MONEY ON FLORES TO BEAT BELLEW

david-haye
David Haye has told fans to put their money on B.J. Flores to rip Tony Bellew’s WBC World Cruiserweight title from him when they meet at the Echo Arena in Liverpool tomorrow night, live on Sky Sports.

Bellew defends his crown for the first time since his stunning KO win over Ilunga Makabu at Goodison Park in May, and for brash American Flores, it could be his last shot at World glory having been edged out on points for the interim WBA crown by Beibut Shumenov last July.

The Liverpool star has called for a showdown with Haye, who became the unified Cruiserweight World champion in November 2007 and added Heavyweight glory to his CV two years later.

The ‘Hayemaker’ says he’s open to talks if Bellew can beat his pal – but the London star thinks the ‘Bomber’ has underestimated the American and his reign as World champion will come to an end at the first hurdle.

“I don’t think Tony is going to win the fight,” said Haye. “B.J. is a big Cruiserweight. Look at them next to each other, there’s not a lot in it at first sight but Tony is tall and skinny whereas B.J. is wide and thick set and can punch.

“B.J. is very underrated, he hasn’t perhaps performed to the nest of his ability in his big fights but he’s been boxing since his was six, has great amateur pedigree boxing all over the world and I think Tony has underestimated him.

“Tony thinks it’s an easy touch and B.J. is a huge underdog with the bookies, I think he’s worth backing to cause the upset. Tony is a good fighter and he was good against Makabu, he was an underdog himself, he got decked in the first and spun it round and did the job so you have to give him credit for that – but is he a real Cruiserweight? I don’t know. He looked it in the Makabu fight, he’s the WBC champion and he did it in good style, but I think it’s a tough first defence and I think it’s a good fight.

“If Tony somehow manages to beat B.J – which he won’t do – we can talk. Tony makes plenty of noise so we’ll see, but he’s got his hands full with B.J.”

Fans that want to take Haye’s advice and back the challenger to take the title can get odds of 7/1 for Flores to win with show sponsors 32Red.com. The visitor is 11/1 to win inside the distance and 20/1 to take the crown on points.

Hometown star Bellew is 1/2 to repeat his epic KO win that landed him the belt at the home of his beloved Everton F.C, and 2/1 to hold onto his belt on points.

Bellew’s clash with Flores is part of a huge night of action in Liverpool Olympic gold medal star Luke Campbell MBE defends his WBC Silver Lightweight title against Derry Mathews.

Belfast star Ryan Burnett defending his British Bantamweight title against Liverpool’s Ryan Farrag, Sean Masher Dodd defends his WBC International Lightweight title against Francesco Patera, Tom Farrell faces Farid Hakimi for the WBA International Super-Lightweight title and Liverpool favourite Rocky Fielding is set for action.

Tickets are on sale now via www.echoarena.com or by calling 0844 8000 400 priced at £40, £60, £80, £100 and £150. VIP tickets will be available exclusively from www.matchroomboxing.com

Face value tickets for Bellew vs. Flores are also be available from http://www.stubhub.co.uk/matchroom-boxing-tickets/ . StubHub is the official ticket partner and marketplace of Matchroom Boxing and Anthony Joshua.

ON THE EVE OF MUHAMMAD ALI’S FUNERAL, DAVID HAYE CONTINUES TO CAMPAIGN FOR ‘THE GREATEST’ TO BE GRANTED A POSTHUMOUS HONORARY KNIGHTHOOD

Muhammad Ali
After the devastating news of Muhammad Ali’s passing last weekend, David Haye continues to campaign for ‘The Greatest’ to be granted an Honorary Knighthood

Former Two-Weight World Champion David Haye launched a campaign in February for his icon, Ali, to be granted an Honorary Knighthood.

Haye said, “This week we lost a Legend, a true Global Icon – phrases I don’t use lightly. Muhammad Ali transcended the world of boxing, inspiring so many, including me, to believe ‘Impossible is Nothing’.

Like millions of others around the world, Muhammad Ali is a hero of mine and inspiring me to box. Added to this his humanitarian work over many years which had a huge impact across the world, I couldn’t think of a more fitting person to be granted an Honorary Knighthood. The current laws do not allow for a posthumous Knighthood, but Ali throughout his career challenged what was deemed possible so it’s quite fitting that current rules should be reviewed for ‘The Greatest of all time’”

The campaign which launched in February received support from Boris Johnson, Bob Geldof, comedian John Bishop and Kasabian frontman Tom Meighan as well as sports personalities including; Denise Lewis, Colin Jackson, Anthony Joshua, Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn. Downing Street officially acknowledge the campaign and (insert additional info Thursday morning)

He continued, ‘Although Muhammad was not well enough to travel to the UK as planned in earlier this year, I met with his wife Lonnie who said what an honour the award, from a country he so loved, would mean to him. With such huge public demand and support from his family I truly hope we can make this happen,’

There have been recent calls to review the process of awarding Knighthoods with one to be granted posthumously to football legend Bobby Moore which would require secondary legislation and also the removal of the late Jimmy Saville’s.

Honorary Knighthoods are to recognise non-British citizens who have made major contributions to this country and its well-being and currently there is no non-British option currently being considered.

Haye added, “I believe Muhammed Ali is the perfect recipient, whilst it is a huge shame this did not happen when he was alive to award it posthumously in honour of the incredible legacy he leaves would be perfectly fitting”

Haye to return May 21 in England

david-haye
Fresh off his 1st round obliteration of Mark De Mori on January 16, former two-division world champion is set to come right back on May 21 in London, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“After being out of the ring for so long it was incredible to be fighting in a (near) capacity crowd at the O2 arena in front of my loyal fans,” said Haye, whose Hayemaker Promotions will put on the May fight card. “I’m thankful for all the support I’ve received so far. I felt so cool and calm in there. I don’t believe any heavyweight in the planet could have taken those punches. Now is my time to prove they can’t.

“The heavyweight division is once again incredibly exciting, with a number of talented fighters vying for the world titles. The Hayemaker is back and ready for the next challenge.”

“David and I have been clear from his comeback announcement that it is with the single objective of reclaiming and unifying the world heavyweight titles,” said Haye’s trainer Shane McGuigan, the son of Hall of Fame former featherweight titleholder Barry McGuigan. “His first-round KO of De Mori showed there was no ring rust. We are keen to keep the momentum and build on his most recent win, with a short period of active recovery before going straight back into camp.”

Haye destroys De Mori in 1

david-haye
Former two divisionn champion David Haye made a triumphant return to the ring with a 1 round destruction Mark de Mori in a scheduled 10-round Heavyweight bout at the O2 Arena in London.

Haye landed a perfect right counter that drilled de Mori in the head and a follow-up combination that was capped off by a right to head sent de Mori flat on his stomach at 2:11 of round 1.

Haye, who was making his first appearance in three and a half years improves his mark to 27-2 with 25 knockouts. de Mori of Australia is now 30-2-2.

Rejuvenated Antonio Tarver Calls out David Haye

antonio_tarver1
TAMPA (Dec. 18, 2014) – All five-time world champion Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver (31-6, 22 KOs) wants for Christmas is a signed contract to fight former two-division world champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KOs), ideally, during the first-quarter of 2015.

Tarver had been sending direct tweets for the past six months to Haye, who hasn’t fought in more than two years, without receiving a response. Coming off last week’s impressive seventh-round knockout of veteran Johnathan Banks (29-3-1, 19 KOs), Tarver has taken off the proverbial gloves and he is now publically calling out Haye, who insists, once again, that he is coming out of retirement.

“In a perfect world I will be fighting Haye early next year,” Tarver said. “He keeps insisting that he’s the second-biggest name in the heavyweight division I need him to be my set-up guy to beat in order for me to get a world title shot against Wladimir Klitschko. Haye has one-punch knockout ability and he’s aggressive. Once I beat him, though, I want Klitschko. I will come to England and knockout Haye, knock him out cold. I’m 46 and I don’t want to go through 12 guys like (Chris) Arreola, (Eddie) Chambers or (Steve) Cunningham to get Klitschko. He’s waiting for me to lose so he doesn’t have to fight me. I’m calling out Haye to get Klitschko. He talks a lot but the boxing world will see if Haye’s serious about fighting again. Tarver vs. Haye is a huge fight in London.

“I’m a star and I want to get paid. None of these cats know how to really promote a fight like Antonio Tarver. I’d prefer to fight Haye in Las Vegas but I’ll come to England to KO his ass! I have the most powerful adviser in boxing, Al Haymon, and I’ve told him I want Haye next. If Haye announces he’s coming out of retirement to fight somebody else, I’ll be at that press conference to embarrass him, the same way I had to get my (Roy) Jones (Jr.) fight. I’m a throw-back fighter who can make a pay-per-view bonanza fighting Klitschko and the way to get that fight is by knocking out Haye. I doubt he’ll fight me because he knows he can’t beat me. I want David Haye in the UK!

“No heavyweight can outbox me. They will have to knock me out to beat me and nobody’s ever done that. I will become the oldest world heavyweight champion in boxing history to cement my legacy. I’m coming for Klitschko after I KO Haye. I’m going to shoot a real-life Rocky movie with me chopping down Klitschko.”

Tarver also had some terse words for critics who complained during and after his recent fight that Banks was a weak opponent and their fight was a snoozer until the final round.

“I hit him with a quick 1-2 and then he wouldn’t stand in front of me because he felt my speed and power early,” Tarver explained. “He didn’t want to get hit with my counter-punches. I wish he had opened up and fought but he didn’t exchange blows. Boxing is the art of self-defense but I don’t see fighters today using their heads. Boxing is chess not checkers. I can box but, when I pick that lock like I did in the seventh round, I can knockout any heavyweight in the world. I don’t think I was hit with one good punch. My reflexes and timing, even at 46, are second to none.”

Tarver initially suffered a now-fully-healed fractured thumb to his left hand, closer to the wrist, postponing the original September 29th fight date versus Banks. Tarver remained in the gym and put in the proper time and effort to stop Banks.

“We created tough sparring sessions to prepare him for Banks,” Tarver’s head trainer Orlando Cuellar commented. “We knew Banks was dangerous and that he could crack. We just kept training and Antonio had to overcome a lot of physical obstacles during camp. He just kept going. He tried to do the impossible and did it. He showed a lot of movement, the ability to explode, and tremendous ring generalship. He sure didn’t look 46 the way he cracked Banks. And he’ll be 50-percent better in his next fight.

“Antonio showed his dedication to improve in the gym. We had a good game plan but he had to do everything he worked on in the fight. His timing was good and he won every round. Banks came out planning to jump on Antonio but he tasted his power in the first 30 seconds and he then didn’t want any part of it. He honestly exceeded what I expected and I didn’t realize how good a finisher he is.”

If Santa Claus delivers a contract for him to fight Haye, he may as well give Tarver another display case, as well, to store the world heavyweight title belt Antonio plans to capture in 2015.

Haye hurts shoulder; Fury fight off

david-haye
Former two division world champion David Haye has pulled out his bout with Tyson Fury for the 2nd time, this time for a shoulder injury that required immediate surgery according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

The bout was originally scheduled for September 28th but a cut over Haye’s eye forced a postponement to February 8th.

“I genuinely believed the shoulder injury wasn’t that bad,” Haye said. “But the doctor sent me for a detailed MRI scan and within 24 hours I was told the full extent of the damage. Twenty-four hours after that I was in the operating theater.

“It’s a crushing blow for me. I had big plans for next year and the ultimate goal was to win back the world heavyweight title, something my amazing fans deserve.

“What I didn’t anticipate was that this year would be the unluckiest of my career and that a number of injuries would disrupt my plans so much. Perhaps it just wasn’t meant to be. The boxing gods keep hinting that maybe enough is enough and that it’s time to finally hang up my gloves.”

“The surgery and subsequent results are a bitter pill to swallow because I truly felt I had a lot more to offer and was looking forward to paying back my loyal fans with some great fights in 2014,” Haye said. “But I’ve been boxing for 23 years now, amateur and pro, and this has clearly taken its toll on my body. I can only offer my sincerest apologies to all those fans who have followed me over the years and, like me, wanted to finish on a real high. This wasn’t how I wanted to end 2013.

“If I’m now destined to have won the European championship, the unified world cruiserweight championship and the WBA heavyweight championship of the world, then so be it. I’m proud of these achievements and consider my boxing career a huge success.”

TYSON FURY: FEBRUARY 8TH IS “SIGNED AND SEALED… OVER TO YOU EXCUSE-MAKER”

London (5th October) Unbeaten heavyweight sensation and former British, Commonwealth and Irish heavyweight champion Tyson Fury has announced that his fight with former undisputed cruiserweight and former WBA world heavyweight champion David Haye is “signed and sealed” for February 8th.

“This is a message to all my fans and haters, for all those wanting to see me knock out David Haye on behalf of the nation and all those who want to see me put out of my misery,” Tyson said.

“The fight for February 8th is completely signed and sealed from both of us.

“I’m pleased that the fight is on again for February 8th – it’s going to be bigger this time, better, more people watching and I’m going to take pleasure in smashing his face in a bit more.

“He shunned me in Sheffield when I was just a kid and then this, it definitely adds to my desire of knocking him out.

“It’s been a long time coming, but it will definitely be worth waiting for – good things come to those who wait – and I’ve been waiting so long.”

David Haye and Dereck Chisora are allegedly both set to be sitting ringside tonight as Wladimir Klitschko, 37, defends his IBF, WBO and WBA ‘super’ titles against undefeated Russian and WBA ‘regular’ belt holder Alexander Povetkin, 34, but Tyson is not interested in any speculation that Haye may be looking to face the winner.

“I don’t want Mr Excuse-maker Haye coming out with any other reason than he chickened out, if he tries to fight a ready-to-go Klitschko instead of me,” Tyson said.

“Let them all go over there, cap-in-hand and watch Klitschko and give him all their credit.

“It’s very possible he chases the winner of Klitschko and Povetkin because he doesn’t want my fight and he’s terrified of me – so he could try and escape by going after one of these, but if he pulls out injured again, it would be laughable and he wouldn’t have the credibility to get in the ring with either of them.

“I really don’t know what’s going to happen in the Klitschko fight, they’re both boring – Povetkin could land that overhand right on his jaw, if not then I can see Povetkin getting beaten on points.

“If they both fight me, I’ll knock them both out, if they ever dare to step in the ring with me – but I really doubt that that’s going to happen.

“I’m confident that Haye will take my fight now as there’s too much public demand for him not to take this fight – after all the pulling out saga he’s got nowhere to go really.

“He’ll have to emigrate – he won’t be able to show his face around this neck of the woods anymore and I’m looking forward to getting in there and doing a job on him.

“Big fights need to happen and it doesn’t come any bigger than the fight we’ve signed up for – over to you Excuse-maker.”

TYSON FURY RESPONDS TO NEWS OF THE RESCHEDULED HAYE DATE OF 8 FEBRUARY 2014

London (25 September) After yesterday’s rescheduled date was announced as February 8th 2014 at the Phones 4 U Arena Manchester, following Haye’s withdrawal from the original September 28th date, Tyson Fury gave this reaction:

“I’m so glad to have this fight rescheduled – in my opinion, he’s a classless pre-madonna, a diva, a no good wannabe Bollywood actor and I can’t wait to put him in his place,” Tyson said.

“There’s lots of honest and hard working people in this world and I believe I’m going to punish and poleaxe this money grabbing cry baby for all of them – he’s getting knocked spark out!

“He’s getting sorted out – I already didn’t like Mr Z list celebrity, Queen of the Jungle – but actions speak louder than words don’t they.

“I’m tired of him, he said he was going to knock Klitschko out and did nothing! Now he’s giving me the same talk – why do people believe him? He can dish it out but can’t take it.

“Mr Toemaker, your excuses are boring – you say you’re going to ‘expose me’ but the difference, Mr Excusemaker, is that every time I say I’m going to go out and do something, I go out and do it and that’s exactly what I was going to do this Saturday and 100 percent going to do on February 8th – nothing has changed, I’m still going to smash your face in, no excuses.”

Promoter Mick Hennessy also gave his reaction to the rescheduled date:

“I’ve pushed for this fight to be back on and I’m delighted it is, as I know this is a fight that Tyson wins in style, by way of the big KO,” Mick Hennessy said.

“David Haye really needs to step up as a man and make sure he’s there on February 8th, otherwise he will have zero credibility and will probably have to emigrate by public demand!”

Tickets previously purchased for the original date of September 28 are automatically valid for this new date of February 8. Alternatively, fans looking for a refund are advised to go back to their point of purchase before October 31.

Haye – Fury recheduled to February 8th, 2014

Tyson Fury
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, the bout between Heavyweights David Haye and Tyson Fury has been rescheduled for February 8th, 2014 after a cut suffered by Haye forced the postponement of the bout scheduled for this Saturday.

“News of the date in February is music to my ears,” Haye said. “I was absolutely devastated this weekend, and felt as though I’d let a lot of people down. But now, with this new date, I couldn’t be happier.

“My fans will still get the chance to see what they all wanted to see this weekend. They’ll get to see Tyson Fury sparked out in a spectacular fashion.”

“Sparring eight days before a fight is nothing new or unusual,” Haye said. “I’ve done this before fights in the past and never had an issue. Also, look at the history books. George Foreman sparred and got cut eight days before his ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ with Muhammad Ali, causing a six-week postponement. And Sugar Ray Leonard sparred and got knocked down five days before his fight with Marvin Hagler but still managed to go on and win.

“Foreman and Leonard are two of the greatest fighters of all time, so if it was good enough for them, it’s certainly good enough for little old me.”

“Not only that, those guys were preparing to face the likes of Ali and Hagler, while I was preparing to fight Tyson Fury, a man whose greatest triumph to date is shedding a few stone on Belgium’s ‘Biggest Loser’ fat camp,” Haye said. “These things sometimes happen in training, and to suggest I decided against wearing a head-guard, or that the cut was premeditated, shows a clear lack of knowledge and understanding.

“This camp was no different to any other, aside from the fact it ended on an unlucky and sour note.”

“Tyson Fury might start to get brave now that he’s received a stay of execution — and he might call me names and accuse me of ducking him — but that will all be short-lived, I can promise you,” he said. “After hearing the nonsense he has come out with in the last few days, I’m even more determined to expose him in front of millions. And only the possibility of getting another chance to land punches on his massive head and doughy gut has helped cheer me up.

“The cut will heal, the fight will happen next year, and the fans will go home happy. The only difference now is that Tyson Fury gets an even nastier beatdown than he would have received first time round. Once again, I’d like to apologize to the fans for the inconvenience caused by the postponement, and also because they will now have to endure a few more months of rubbish spewing from the mouth of Tyson Fury. I had hoped to silence him for good on Saturday night.”

OFFICIAL HENNESSY SPORTS STATEMENT FOLLOWING HAYE WITHDRAWAL

London (23 September) Hennessy Sports would like to reassure fans following the extremely disappointing news regarding the British super-fight between Tyson Fury and David Haye, set for September 28th at the Phones 4 U Arena Manchester, as we endeavour to do all we can to resolve this situation and reschedule a new date as quickly as possible.

We would like to officially apologise to all the boxing fans who have supported us, bought tickets, booked time off from work and booked hotels prior to this news and thank you for your patience as we look to announce a new date.

“We only found out about this situation around midday on Saturday morning, only about half an hour before Hayemaker sent out their official release announcing it,” Mick Hennessy said.

“Since then we have been working around the clock with Team Fury, Hayemaker and Sky in an attempt to resolve the situation and reschedule a new date as quickly as possible.

“We have looked into a number of possibilities and have been left very frustrated as due to these circumstances beyond our control, there is nothing that can be done to salvage the 28th, but this is a super-fight that the fans deserve to see and Tyson is eager to deliver for them.

“To be fair to Tyson as well, he has done everything in his power to keep this date alive for the fans, even agreeing to fight Deontay Wilder on the 28th (if Team Wilder agreed), but this fight at short notice was obviously not considered to be box office.

“For the fans that want refunds on their tickets rather than wait for a rescheduled date, please contact the point of purchase for a refund.

“We are very disapointed and can imagine how you are all feeling about this as fans and hopefully we will be able to announce further information as soon as possible.”

Haye gets cut; Fury fight off

david_haye_1
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former two division champion David suffered a cut over his left eye and his fight with Tyson Fury stated for next Saturday is now off for the time being.

“Gutted isn’t even the word,” Haye said. “Mentally, I’m on the floor at the moment. I’m devastated most of all for my loyal fans, my family and my team, as well as Tyson Fury and his team.

“I know injuries and cuts are part and parcel of our sport, but this doesn’t change the feeling of disappointment and sadness I’m experiencing right now. To everyone who has bought tickets, booked hotels, and followed this fight since it was announced, there is absolutely nothing I can do except apologize from the very bottom of my heart. Even when everything seems to be right on track, sometimes life throws you a curveball. I will somehow have to try and make the best of this horrible situation. But, right now, I’m in bits about what has happened.”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BOTH CHRIS EUBANK JR AND HUGHIE LEWIS FURY AS THEY ARE ADDED TO THE TYSON FURY VS DAVID HAYE SUPER SHOW

London (18th September) Hennessy Sports would like to wish both Chris Eubank Jr and Hughie Fury very happy birthdays today, as well as announce that both fighters will appear on the Tyson Fury vs David Haye undercard.

After their stoppage wins at the Magna Centre, Rotherham, on the undercard to Kid Galahad’s sensational British title knockout win over Jazza Dickens, the hot middleweight sensation and young heavyweight star will be back in action in just 10 days time.

Eubank Jr, who turned 24 today, took apart and stopped the tough Bulgarian Alexey Ribchev inside three rounds in Rotherham and will be looking for a repeat performance in Manchester.

The stoppage extended his perfect record to 11 wins with six knockouts, while Hughie, who turned 19 today, took on former British cruiserweight champion Shane McPhilbin to record his ninth straight win and sixth stoppage since his professional debut in March.

Watch both Eubank Jr and Hughie weigh-in at the official Fury vs. Haye weigh-in, Friday, September 27, inside the Phones 4 U Arena, Manchester – open to the general public.

There is a limited amount of free tickets released through the Phones 4 U Arena Box Office and also eventim.co.uk, which carry a booking fee of £2.50 per transaction up to four tickets and are on sale now.

The weigh-in itself will commence at 12.30pm (doors open at 11.30am) and every boxer scheduled to appear on the Fury vs. Haye fight card will tip the scales.

Of course, due to the expected high demand, fans are urged to snap up their tickets as soon as possible for this event.

Jumah added to Haye-Fury undercard

Deion Jumah (2-0, 1 KO) has been added to the undercard of the heavyweight showdown between David Haye and Tyson Fury at the Phones 4u Arena in Manchester on September 28.

Since his last fight the former two-time ABA Champion has joined forces with Adam Booth and been training alongside David Haye and George Groves at the Hayemaker Gym.

‘’Training at the Hayemaker Gym has been great,’’ said the 24-year-old southpaw. ‘’You learn something new everyday. Since my last fight I’ve spent a lot of time in the gym with Adam, slowing things down and really thinking about what I am doing. It has been a process of being broken down and then rebuilding. People are going to be looking at a different, more complete fighter come September 28.”

The London-based cruiserweight is relishing the opportunity to fight in front a home crowd. ‘’My first two fights have been abroad – one in Germany and one in Denmark. It will be good to be home and box in front of a British crowd on such a massive show. The atmosphere is going to be incredible and I am ready to step up and show everybody what I am capable of.’’

Quigg to fight Salinas for vacant title on Haye – Fury card

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Scott Quigg and Yoandris Salinas will vie for a vacant 122 pound championship as part of the David Haye – Tyson Fury undercard.

“It’s a dream come true that my first world title fight will be in Manchester,” Quigg said. “It’ll be a massive boost to have my fans there and, with Haye and Fury fighting, too, it’s a huge night to be involved in and a great stage to land a world title. I’ve worked so hard to get here and I’m going to grab this title with both hands.”

“It’s fantastic for Scott to be challenging for his first world title on this bill,” Hearn said. “They’re both young unbeaten fighters desperate to take this golden chance. It’s a great fight on what promises to be a huge night for British boxing.”

The card also will feature middleweight contender Andy Lee (30-2, 21 KOs), 29, of Ireland against Domenico Spada (37-4, 19 KOs), 32, of Italy

“This is a great next step for me in my career,” Lee said. “Spada has been around the world scene for years now and has never before been stopped. He’s a renowned tough guy with a solid chin and a great work ethic. Therefore, it is my aim to go out there, put on a show and become the first man to stop him.”

TYSON FURY HITS RIPE OLD AGE OF 25!!!

London (12 August) Just six weeks and five days away from his all British super fight with former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye on September 28, Tyson Fury is celebrating his 25th birthday.

The 6’9’’ heavyweight sensation is in training camp in Belgium preparing to take on Haye at the Phones 4 U Arena Manchester live on Sky Sports HD Box Office and instead of cake, can look forward to hard training and a fixed diet!

For Tyson, the former English, British, Commonwealth and Irish heavyweight champion, many could be forgiven for assuming he is older considering everything he’s already achieved.

Boasting a perfect record of 21 wins from 21 fights, with 15 knockouts, in just five years as a professional, it all started with a first round knockout of Bela Gyongyosi in 2008.

Tyson claimed the British heavyweight belt with a ninth round knockout of John McDermott in just 2010, in a rematch from their 2009 contest where Tyson won the English title with a points decision.

In 2011 he fought Dereck Chisora for the British and Commonwealth titles – utilising his reach, Tyson powered his way to a unanimous points win over 12 rounds, picking up the championships while inflicting the first defeat of Chisora’s promising career.

That was quickly followed by knockout victories over Nicolai Firtha and Neven Pajkic before relinquishing his belts to face Martin Rogan for the vacant Irish heavyweight championship.

Since then, Fury claimed the WBO Inter-Continental title with a crushing fifth round knockout of Vinny Maddalone.

Ranked in the top 10 fighters within all the world governing bodies, Tyson stepped up to convincingly outpoint Kevin Johnson in Belfast, before moving on to Steve “USS” Cunningham on his US debut.

Fighting at the Mecca of boxing at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, New York, a venue every fighter aspires to fight in but few accomplish, Tyson met the former two-time world cruiserweight champion Cunningham.

Aged just 24 at the time, Tyson faced a second-round knockdown to come back and knock Cunningham out in the seventh, proving he not only has the physical attributes to dominate the sport, but also the heart and drive to come back and win.

Experienced and mature beyond his years, one thing is for certain, come September 28th all that heart and will to win will be in the ring with David Haye, but for now it’s a birthday of training and hard work.

Michael Sprott: Tyson is “very hungry” for this fight and already looking “very good

London (8 August) Former British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion Michael Sprott believes Tyson Fury is hungrier than ever ahead of his big British showdown with David Haye.

Sprott is in Belgium sparring with Tyson to help him prepare for the biggest fight of his career to date, when he takes on Haye at the Phones 4 U Arena Manchester on September 28th, live on Sky Sports HD Box Office.

“He is very hungry and he really wants it – he knows that there are big things that can come from this,” Sprott said.

“If he gets passed David Haye then the Klitschko’s will have to fight him.”

Michael, a former English, British, Commonwealth and EBU-EU heavyweight champion, joined the camp this week and has been impressed by the 24-year-old undefeated heavyweight.

“He uses his jab well, he’s a big man, long arms and very difficult to measure,” Sprott said.

“He has six weeks left to the fight, but he is already looking very good.”

Sprott, who boasts 37 wins with 17 knockouts, has faced the likes of Robert Helenius, Edmund Gerber, Kubrat Pulev and Alexander Dimitrenko in his last five fights and has been joining all aspects of training.

“It’s really good but really hard work – I’m getting involved with the all the training and circuits, it’s good training,” Sprott said.

“It’s a great training camp and we’re really enjoying it over here as well,” Sprott said.

Peter Fury: TYSON’S TRAINING CAMP WILL BE “INVALUABLE” FOR HUGHIE

London (30 July) Peter Fury believes young heavyweight star Hughie Fury will improve “ten-fold” by helping his cousin prepare for his blockbuster showdown with David Haye at Manchester Arena on September 28th, live on Sky Sports HD Box Office.

The 6’7” 18-year-old is in Belgium as part of Tyson Fury’s eight week training camp, helping him prepare for the biggest fight of his career and his father and trainer, Peter, believes the level of sparring and fitness work will be “invaluable” for Hughie.

“This is an invaluable experience for such a young kid in a training camp like this and it will speak volumes,” Peter said.

“He’s developing really well, but still has a lot to work on, but in such an environment you can expect Hughie to improve ten-fold.”

Making his professional debut in just March of this year, Hughie has wasted no time in building his experience and already boasts a record of eight wins with five knockouts, no defeats and no draws.

The first ever Irish/British fighter to win a gold medal at the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships at super heavyweight, Hughie has fought in Canada, the US at Madison Square Garden, New York, Romania, Northern Ireland, England and Ireland.

Focussed on one day beating Mike Tyson’s infamous record of becoming the youngest world heavyweight champion, Hughie’s attention is now on training in Belgium, where the team are on a strict regime.

Hughie is scheduled to fight again in September.

Haye – Fury is finally signed for September 28th

david-haye
In what will be a big Heavyweight fight, former Heavyweight and Cruiserweight champion David Haye will fight Tyson Fury on September 28th in Manchester, UK according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“Tyson Fury and David Haye, both world-ranked, charismatic and dangerous, have agreed to a highly anticipated domestic showdown,” the statement read. “It marks not only the biggest heavyweight encounter of 2013, but also the biggest fight staged in Britain for many years.”

Abdusalamov Offers 80/20 to Haye, Fury and/or Mitchell: Negotiations Over. Let’s Fight!

Reading the back and forth on Twitter between David Haye and Tyson Fury about purse splits to face each other, WBC #4 rated heavyweight contender Magomed “Mago” Abdusalamov (18-0, 18 KOs) has an easy deal to offer the #5, 6 and 7 contenders in his division.

“I’ll take an 80/20 purse split and I will take the 20% to fight either David Haye, Tyson Fury or Seth Mitchell,” says the Russian powerhouse. “In fact, says Abdusalamov, if I lose, I will give them my 20% and I will walk away happy, knowing I don’t deserve my ranking in the WBC.”

Abdusalamov, a pulverizing puncher who has dispatched all 18 of his professional opponents says he’s willing to forego all the negotiating and posturing being done between the fighters and offer his lower-rated counterparts a chance at a lucrative heavyweight showdown.

“David Haye says he’s having trouble getting Tyson Fury in a ring. He’ll have no trouble with me and he can take the lion’s share of the money. I am the future of heavyweight boxing and I’ll fight anyone to prove it.”

Abdusalamov’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing, says his phone is fully charged and waiting for a call.

“Mago fears no one. Instead of arguing about money, we are offering them a fight with a higher-rated fighter in the WBC and they can take most of the money. They will get paid and Mago will continue to prove he is the next heavyweight champion by knocking any of them out if they take the deal. Pick up the phone and call me. We will set it up quickly and let’s make a fight.”

Haye injures hand; fight with Charr postponed

david-haye
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Former two division world champion David Haye had to withdraw from his June 29th fight with former world Heavyweight title challenger Manuel Charr due to a left hand injury.

“I’m absolutely gutted to have to pull out of this fight on June 29,” Haye said. “I pick up injuries now and again in training, and sometimes carry them into fights, but this was one I simply couldn’t recover from in time. I need to rest it up for at least four weeks.

“I apologize to Manuel Charr and to everybody involved with the promotion. But most of all I want to say sorry to the thousands of fans who bought tickets to the fight. I felt it was important to let them know about the cancellation as soon as possible, so they can now make other plans. As soon as I am told I can resume full training, my loyal fans will be the first to know.”

David Haye to meet Manuel Charr

david-haye
Former two-division world champion David Haye will meet former Heavyweight title challenger Manuel Charr on June 29 in Manchester, England according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“I’m delighted to have agreed to a four-fight promotional deal with David Haye and Hayemaker,” said Eddie Hearn of Matchrrom Sport, who will co-promote the fight with Haye. “In my opinion David is the most exciting heavyweight on the planet and I’m over the moon to help bring his comeback fight against Charr to Sky Sports on June 29.”\

Last month, Charr continued his efforts, saying, “I heard that Haye is still looking for an opponent for his next fight. There’s no need to look any further. I’m right here waiting. Haye himself said that Vitali Klitschko couldn’t beat me — [that] instead Vitali’s doctor won the fight for him [by stopping the fight because of the cut]. I still want my rematch against Klitschko and Haye is my way to get there. Let’s do an eliminator for Vitali. I’m ready when you are, David!”

Manuel Charr calls out David Haye

Heavyweight contender Manuel Charr has big goals for 2013. „I hope to get another chance to fight Vitali Klitschko for the WBC world championship“, states Charr. „I will do whatever it takes to make this fight happen. I can only hope that Vitali doesn’t retire. I heard that David Haye wants to fight him, too. Well, David, we both have the same goal – so let us find out in the ring who should have the right to challenge Klitschko. I am hereby officially challenging you for an elimination bout!“

In his first world title shot in September in Moscow Charr was stopped by a cut in the fourth round. „Vitali didn’t beat me – his doctor did it for him“, says Charr. „I think David Haye said the same thing right after the fight.“ The „Diamond Boy“ has already checked different options to get a rematch against the older Klitschko brother.

After winning the WBC Silver international championship in March, Charr added the WBC Baltic and WBC Mediterranean title to his collection of minor regional belts by knocking out tough contender Konstantin Airich in one round on December 21st. „There are seven minor WBC belts – and I want to unify them all“, says Charr. „Once I have all the ‚small’ belts the only one missing will be the big green and gold title. And that’s what I’m looking for.“

Another chance to secure a title shot would be winning the „WBC World Cup“ which is supposed to start in May. „The WBC is looking for eight contenders for the World Cup“, states Charr. „I am honoured to be on the short list. The winner of the tournament will become the mandatory challenger for the world championship.“

The only problem: The World Cup is scheduled for a whole year which means that Charr – in case he wins the tournament – would be world title challenger in 2014 when Vitali Klitschko will most probably be retired. But the „Diamond Boy“ desperately wants to face Klitschko again to show the world that he can beat the best heavyweight fighter in the world.

„That’s why I am calling out David Haye. I am not ducking anybody and only looking for the biggest challenge out there. David, if you’re reading this, come on and fight me! I’m ready and only waiting for you – let’s get it on!“

VIDEO: DAVID HAYE

Palate cleansed

Boxing insiders will forgive David Haye. Many of us have already. What he did some Saturdays ago against Wladimir Klitschko, the ballsy hustle of it, was different to us only for reasons of scale. We see the same embellishment and churlish irony from smalltime promoters each month. Supposedly, it’s part of prizefighting’s charm.

We endure it out of self-interest. If the heavyweight division could just get back on the front page of . . . well, OK, the homepage of, well, something, laymen would again talk about our sport. They’d want to read about it, too. Advertisers would return. Writers would be paid.

But what about those laymen? If you know any, they approached you this week about Klitschko-Haye because you’ve mentioned boxing to them at Starbucks. These aren’t your friends from the gym. These are the people with whom you talk about boxing, work or federal-debt-ceiling negotiations.

And what they wanted from you, believe it or not, was a little outrage. They watched Klitschko-Haye, because it was for the heavyweight championship of the world, and they were unimpressed. So, they wanted your eyes to flash or your voice to rise Monday. They wanted to hear what Haye did was unacceptable. When you explained the fight wasn’t that bad and Klitschko is very effective at what he does and Haye’s trash-talking is just the way of the world, you know what these laymen thought?

Hadn’t watched boxing in ages. Seems I haven’t missed anything.

We won’t mourn these absentee fans’ future absence because that’s what the 1990s and 2000s were for – fretting over a dwindling interest in our sport. Today, God love us, we’re defiant; those moronic ghouls, we say, they just want senseless violence and don’t even know what a counterpunch is!

There went the last three casual fans? Very well. No one here but the choir, then, so let’s preach to us.

We found comfort on Friday and Saturday – a couple reminders of why we stick with this sport no matter how little this sport cares that we do. Arizona super middleweight Jesus “El Martillo” Gonzales made a fine scrap with Mexico light heavyweight Francisco Sierra on ESPN2, Friday. And Saturday “Bam Bam” Brandon Rios made one of the finest three-round championship fights of the last 30 years, with Urbano Antillon on Showtime.

But it was all ruined by HBO. There is a temptation to think that way, sure. It was hard to watch Saturday’s fare in the aficionado’s proper order – Showtime first, HBO second – without going to bed a little downtrodden. HBO set out to rehab one of its house fighters, and he lost, and the Atlantic City judges – unaware HBO had quit on its house fighter – turned in majority-decision scorecards confirming a rehabilitation.

Paul Williams’ victory, contrary to popular sentiment, was not all that is wrong with boxing. At this point, a 100-round fight couldn’t turn that trick. Williams’ victory instead was a lesson in the corrupting effect of vesting a small group of people with disproportionate power, but if we’re going to play the boxing-as-metaphor game, we might as well find a worthier subject to treat than some Machiavellian advisor or other.

You know what? Let’s scrap the game altogether and just celebrate what Gonzales, Sierra, Rios and Antillon gave us.

Jesus Gonzales, possessed of one remarkable punch and many flaws, returned to the place where he was comprehensively undone by Jose Luis Zertuche almost six years ago. He dropped Sierra in the fourth round with a left cross he throws to the body as well as any southpaw in the game. Then he was dropped in the fifth by a Sierra right hand to the chin Gonzales leaves unguarded as any southpaw’s in the game. But Gonzales rose from the canvas to win a fair unanimous decision.

His attack consists of a bunny hop, a pair of jabs and a lunging left hand followed by backwards hops and a reset. Something like this.

Gonzales bounces, sets. He jabsjabs, then leaps. Right hand in his front pocket, chin good and high, he dives forward. The left fist uncoils perfectly from behind his left shoulder, and his wrist turns over at the instant before impact, to make a punch forceful enough to crack a human rib – a feat Gonzales achieved against Kendall Gould 50 months ago in Fountain Hills, Ariz. – the very sort of punch that would fold Andre Ward in half were it to land. The odds of that happening are long. Ward is much better than Sierra. Much better than Gonzales, too. But anyway.

Gonzales is not the future star promoter Bob Arum thought he was in 2003. But ESPN2 could do a lot worse than televising Gonzales’ next three or four fights.

Writing of Arum’s roster of future stars – the fluctuating team of a curmudgeonly coach – how about that Brandon Rios? Little was missing from his 8 1/2 minute destruction of Urbano Antillon but the finish. With Antillon dazed and stumbling away, Rios just missed a chance to run across the ring and finish him like Marvelous Marvin Hagler finished Tommy Hearns in the only better three-round fight you can think of.

This was a fight for a world lightweight title. It was a fight in which neither man gave ground. A fight that saw Antillon, felled twice and on the verge of unconsciousness, scoff at a ref’s suggestion the fight should not resume. A fight of gorgeous uppercuts and hooks and no defense for its own sake. A treat that Rios ended by catching Antillon’s left hook to the body and countering it with a right cross, twice. Poetic.

Yes, sport in general has forgotten but not forgiven David Haye. And there are fewer prospective boxing fans today than there were two weeks ago. But there are still prizefighters from the Mexican tradition out there. And in that, friends, we must find our solace.

DOOMED PLANE WENT INTO BARREL ROLL.(FRONT)

The Capital Times July 28, 2005 CALUMET, WIS. (AP) — A World War II-era plane that crashed into a field, killing the pilot, went into a barrel roll while in formation with three other of the vintage fighters, a witness said. in our site barrel roll google

“It looked as if he tried to pull out of it and when he did, he must have been disoriented,” Tim Warner of Malone said of the pilot of the North American P51-D Mustang. “He pulled the wrong way, and he went straight down.

“He must have realized it, and he turned to pull out, but by then, he was a couple hundred feet from the ground and he went straight in.” Experimental Aircraft Association spokesman Dick Knapinski said the craft took off from Wittman Regional Airport, where the group was holding its AirVenture fly-in and convention. He said the plane was preparing to fly back over the field with the three other planes during an air show when the crash occurred about 20 miles south of Oshkosh.

The pilot was identified Wednesday as Richard P. James, 67, of Fennimore, according to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department.

Warner, who is a town of Calumet volunteer firefighter, saw the crash from the ground and ran to the scene through a pasture, finding a 4-foot-deep crater created by the plane’s impact. see here barrel roll google

“There was nothing left,” he said.

The weather was relatively calm and clear at the time of the crash. National Transportation Safety Board investigator Ed Malinowski said he doesn’t know what caused the crash.

“We will be focusing on the aircraft, the pilot and the weather he was flying in,” he said.

Klitschko defends title with decision over Haye

David Haye promised he would retire in October for his thirty-first birthday. He either already retired or should have as he was extremely lackluster in his one sided unanimous decision to Wladimir Klitschko in what was the most anticiapted Heavyweight championship bout in nearly a decade in Hamburg, Germany.

The fight lacked the action that most thought it would have in the nearly three year build up of this bout. Haye showed some quickness early but his only offense was lunging and jumping in to land blind punches in an effort to hurt Klitschko. Klitshcko settled in an got his vaunted jab pumping which made Haye “fight” backing up and not looking for any sustained offense.

Haye continued to flop around the ring and hit the canvas a handful of times for which referee Gino Rodriguez deducted a point in round seven from Klitschko for holding. Klitschko won rounds by landing some jabs and the combination of a lack of effort from Haye, who promised fireworks but produced a dud.

Klitschko scored a dubious knockdown in round eleven after Haye lunged in a was pushed down with the left arm and Rodriguez ruled a rematch. Haye landed a huge right hand that got Klitschko’s attention but he wasn’t able to capitalize.

Klitschko, 242 lbs of Kiev, Ukranine won by scores of 118-108; 117-108 and 116-110 to add the WBA Heavyweight championship to the IBF/WBO/Ring Magazine collection and is now 56-3. Haye, 212 lbs of London, England is now 25-2.

After the fight Haye claimed he had a broken toe which hampered his performance

There’s plenty of opportunity in Haye’s trashing of Klitschko

For years, Wladimir Klitschko has been the solitary chess master against a field full of guys who should be playing checkers. He’s been winning with a stoic efficiency that earns polite applause, yet without any of the passion that captures the public imagination.

Maybe, David Haye, a joker on Klitschko’s familiar board of squares, can change that Saturday on HBO at Imtech Arena in Hamburg, Germany. There’s a theory that Haye has been winning the psychological rounds, the fight before the fight. It’s as if he hired Bernard Hopkins to be a consultant.

Haye’s insults, choreographed to be as outrageous as possible, have ringside psychologists reading the body language and interpreting the words for signs of anger in Klitschko (55-3, 49 KOs). An angry Klitschko might result in mistakes that could turn him into a beatable Klitschko, whose many advantages include a powerful jab, size and friendly German fans.

Haye’s tactical gamesmanship is a reasonable, perhaps necessary, weapon in a plan to lure Klitschko away from strengths and into an exchange designed to expose a brittle chin to quick hands that could score a dramatic upset. Still, it’s hard to tell whether Klitschko’s anger is just some gamesmanship of his own. Nobody has ever questioned Dr. Klitschko’s smarts.

Klitschko, who has a PhD in philosophy and sports science, has to have a pretty good read on what Haye (25-1, 23 KOs) is trying to do. It ain’t academic. It’s been all street, including a cartoonist’s rendering of Wladimir and brother Vitali’s severed heads bleeding across a T-shirt. Haye has even gone Hitler on Klitschko. He tweeted a link to Downfall, a film about Hitler’s final days. Maybe, Haye’s parade to the ring will include a few goose-steps. There’s nothing he won’t do to offend, offend and offend again.

Trouble is, Haye probably has turned Germany into a bigger fan of Klitschko than he already is. I’m not sure Klitschko will ever express the kind of emotion that becomes a bond between some fighters and their countrymen in other corners of the world. The Filipinos identify with Manny Pacquiao. Mexicans looked at Julio Cesar Chavez and saw themselves. Klitschko, a Ukrainian, looks like the stoic face of an Eastern European edifice. He is as hard to know as he is to appreciate during the weakest era in the heavyweight division.

For the last several years, we’ve watched Klitschko to applaud his skill. But Haye, as unlikely a business partner as there has ever been, has created an opportunity for him to become somebody he has never been.
“If you keep winning, something is going to come up,’’ Klitschko trainer Emanuel Steward said nearly a year ago when asked what or who will propel the heavyweight champion into a legacy of his own.

Then, Steward said it would be Haye, who has willingly and perhaps unwittingly transformed himself into a bad guy. For Klitschko, it means chance to be cheered like a hero instead of applauded like an artist. It means a place in heavyweight history.

NOTES, QUOTES
· Floyd Mayweather Jr. said this week in New York that he never accused Pacquiao of using performance-enhancers. “I’ve never said that Manny Pacquiao was taking steroids, I never said he was taking enhancement drugs,” Mayweather said during a news conference for his Sept. 17 fight with Victor Ortiz. Huh? So what was Mayweather trying to say last September in his infamous YouTube rant? That’s when he said: “I’m gonna fight the Pacman when he’s off the power pellets.” What he meant by power and/or pellets figures to be a question he’d have to answer under oath if he shows up for a deposition in the defamation suit filed against him by Pacquiao. So far, he hasn’t. A district court judge this week denied Mayweather’s appeal for an order to prevent a court-ordered deposition.

· Memo to the International Boxing Hall of Fame: Put broadcaster Nick Charles on the next ballot for induction. Charles, who died June 25 after a long battle with cancer, earned a spot alongside journalists already in the Hall. It’s been a tough few weeks for boxing. In addition to Genaro Hernandez and Charles, the game lost former Hopkins trainer Bouie Fisher and former junior-welterweight champ Billy Costello. Fisher was 83; Costello 55.

· A sign of a boxing resurrection in Phoenix will include television cameras on July 8 for super-middleweight Jesus Gonzales (26-1, 14 KOs) against Henry Buchanan (20-2, 13 KOs) in a ring near the center of the floor at the Suns home, US Airways Center. ESPN2 will be there.

· And a sure sign you’re getting old: Happy Birthday, Mike Tyson. He turned 45 Thursday.
