(May 11, 2022) – With fight week now underway, legendary Hall of Fame boxer, Floyd “Money” Mayweather, known globally as TBE (The Best Ever), promises a special and unique boxing experience when he returns to the ring this Saturday, May 14 headlining “The Global Titans Fight Series” in an exhibition against unbeaten “Dangerous” Don Moore that serves as the main event of a pay-per-view lineup taking place “in the skies of Dubai” outdoors on the helipad of Dubai’s opulent Burj Al Arab Hotel.

The pay-per-view event, which is presented by FrontRow and Global Titans in association with Mayweather Promotions, will begin at 9:30 p.m. GST (1:30 p.m. ET) and be broadcast live by LIVENow, is available for purchase HERE.

“I promise you’ve never seen a boxing event like this,” said Mayweather, who recently traveled to Nigeria to promote the fight, before landing in Dubai ahead of Saturday’s action. “I’m going to continue to break barriers on May 14. While in Nigeria, Mayweather expressed his goal of setting up a boxing academy in the country and met with Rotimi Amaechi, a presidential hopeful there. Upon arriving in Dubai, Mayweather was spotted at The Kamani Club for final workouts ahead of fight night as he met with fighters including two-division world champion Badou Jack, who fights on Saturday’s undercard, and cruiserweight champion Lawrence Okolie.

Prior to leaving the U.S., Mayweather had returned to his hallowed stomping grounds from throughout much of his record-breaking career, The Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas. Still attracting a strong crowd during his legendary workout sessions, the latest addition to Mayweather’s training entourage was his two-year-old grandson, K.J., who brought Mayweather new joy amongst another camp.

“It was business as usual,” said Mayweather. “It always feels good to be in the ring and around familiar faces in the boxing gym. I’ve spent so much of my life in the gym, so I always feel comfortable getting back into it. Training for any fight, and even this exhibition, is something I am always going to do. No one ever saw me take a day off during my career. Why would I start now?”

A five-division world champion who racked up 12 world titles on his way to an iconic 50-0 record, Mayweather has continued to deliver entertainment for fight fans even in retirement. (May 10, 2022) – A women’s 10-round championship fight has been added to the inaugural edition of “The Global Titans Fight Series,” headlined by the ring return of Floyd “Money” Mayweather facing “Dangerous” Don Moore “in the skies of Dubai” on Saturday, May 14, as former unified champion Delfine Persoon of Belgium will take on France’s undefeated Elhem “The Diamond” Mekhaled for the vacant Female WBC Silver Super Featherweight Championship.

The pay-per-view event, which will begin at 9:30 p.m. GST (1:30 p.m. ET) and be broadcast live by LIVENow, is available for purchase HERE.

Persoon (46-3, 19 KOs) and Mekhaled (14-0, 2 KOs) will meet in one of the supporting bouts when Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs) returns to face Moore (18-0-1, 12 KOs) in an eight-round, main-event exhibition matchup, outdoors on the helipad of Dubai’s opulent Burj Al Arab Hotel.

Perhaps best known for her two-fight series against top pound-for-pound fighter Katie Taylor, Persoon, of Roeselare, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, held the Women’s WBC Lightweight Championship for five years and made nine successful defenses before losing a nationally televised controversial decision to Taylor for the undisputed lightweight championship at Madison Square Garden in 2019. The rematch with Taylor was held in 2020 and Persoon again lost a razor-thin decision.

Persoon, who works as a railway policewoman in her homeland, started professional boxing in 2009 after competing in judo. Ranked among the best female fighters on the planet, Persoon also held the IBF female lightweight title in 2012.

“It’s great to be back in the ring and I’m very excited to compete on an undercard for Floyd Mayweather,” said Persoon. “My opponent has a good record and I respect her taking this challenge, but I’m going to show her I’m at a different level. Just like I did against Katie Taylor, I’m going to bring the action from start to finish and do everything I can to have my hand raised.”

The undefeated Mekhaled hails from Vaulx-en-Velin, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France. In her five-year career, she has held the WBC interim female super-featherweight title, which she captured in March 2019 by defeating Spain’s Danila Ramos via 10-round unanimous decision, as well as the French and European Championships.

The fight against Persoon will be Mekhaled’s second outside her native France. The 31-year-old was last seen scoring a first-round knockout over Bosnia And Herzegovina’s Pasa Malagic to successfully defend her EBU (European) belt in September 2021.

(May 4, 2022) – Two-division world champion Badou Jack will prepare to make one more run at championship gold with his sights set on a cruiserweight title as he returns to action on Saturday, May 14 on “The Global Titans Fight Series” undercard available on PPV through LIVENow from the helipad of Dubai’s opulent Burj Al Arab Hotel.

“My goal is to cement my legacy and capture a world title in a third weight class,” said Jack, a longtime protégé of Floyd Mayweather throughout his championship run.

Jack will take on Hany “Egyptian Hurricane” Atiyo leading up to the main event showdown that will see legendary boxing Hall of Famer and “TBE – The Best Ever” Floyd “Money” Mayweather in an exhibition matchup against undefeated “Dangerous” Don Moore that can be purchased on PPV HERE.

“Any fight that Floyd Mayweather is involved with will be historic,” said Jack. “Floyd always looks out for me and I’m always appreciative of everything that he has done for my career. This will be yet another unforgettable event and I am proud to be on the card.”

Born in Sweden to a father of Gambian-descent, Jack represented Gambia in the 2008 Olympic games before setting out on his title-winning career. Throughout his career, Jack has made Dubai a second home, promoting a fight in the country while also doing humanitarian work in the Middle East. Jack previously fought in Dubai in his last outing, knocking out Samuel Crossed in November 2021.

Jack has held his entire training camp in Dubai, continuing his efforts to support the sport in the region.

“Training camp has been going great with my whole team out in Dubai,” said Jack. “We’re always very comfortable being here. It’s really an easy process having camp here. My head coach Johnathon Banks has situated all of the sparring I’ve been getting, so I feel great and will definitely be at 100% on fight night.”

Jack will take on an Egyptian native who now resides in Dubai in Atiyo, who stands over 6’2” and who has fought at cruiserweight since 2014. For Jack, he feels confident at the new weight class and plans to make a dominant statement against Atiyo.

“I feel like I have much more energy and strength being at this weight,” said Jack. “This is the best I’ve ever felt in my career. I don’t know much about Atiyo other than that he’s a natural cruiserweight. Regardless of who is in front of me, it’s going to be the same result on May 14. I’m leaving the ring with my hand raised.”

Completed in 1999 for a cost of USD $1 billion, the Burj Al Arab Hotel, at a height of 321 meters (1,053 feet) is one of the tallest hotels in the world, standing 14 meters (approx. 45 feet) taller than the Eiffel Tower and just 60 meters (197 feet) shorter than the Empire State building. Built to reflect the shape of a sail of a ship, the Burj Al Arab’s helipad stands at a height of 210 meters (689 feet) above ground, making this fight a contest that will be fought at one of the highest elevations in history.

Often labeled “the world’s only ‘seven-star’ hotel”, the Burj Al Arab stands on a man-made island that is 280 meters (920 feet) from world-famous Jumeirah Beach and is connected to the mainland by a private curving bridge.

Although 39% of its total height is made up of non-occupiable space, the Burj Al Arab is home to 28 double-story floors with 202 guest rooms, the smallest of which occupies an area of 169 square meters (1,820 square feet), while the largest covers 780 square meters (8,400 square feet). The most expensive room in the hotel, The Royal Suite, goes for USD $24,000 per night and is listed at number 12 on the world’s list of the 15 most expensive hotel suites.

Approximately 1,790 square meters (19,267 square feet) of 24-carat gold leaf was used to embellish the hotel’s opulent interiors, and the 10,000 square meter (107,693 square foot) luxury terrace, the first man-made luxury beach facility of its kind, features two pools adorned with 10 million gold and azure mosaic tiles, cabanas and a 1,120 square meter (12,056 square foot) beach area, for which 1,000 tons of white sand were imported.

Some of the Burj’s other incredible features are Al Mahara (“The Oyster”), a large seawater aquarium, holding roughly 990,000 L (260,000 US gal) of water that is accessed via a simulated submarine ride, the largest Swarovski crystal ceiling in the world in the hotel’s Japanese restaurant, more than 24,000 square meters (258,334 square feet) of 30 different types of Statuario marble throughout, approximately 1,790 square meters (19,267 square feet) of 24-carat gold leaf in the hotel’s interiors, a shuttle service with Rolls-Royces and a helicopter, 18 separate elevators and the Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project (DTRP), which has treated and rescued over 1600 sick and injured sea turtles since it was launched in 2004.

Fathers indoctrinating their sons, especially first borns, into their line of work is a long standing worldwide tradition. The sport of professional boxing is one of the many trades that has been handed down from one generation to the next in the history of humankind. Some second generation fighters have found great success emulating their fathers, while many others failed to excel inside the squared circle, perhaps in part to the inherent pressure that comes with following in large footsteps on a grand stage. Steve “USS” Cunningham is one father that left mighty big shoes to fill for his aspiring fighter sons. The former two-time world cruiserweight champion’s first born and namesake, Steve Cunningham Jr., looks to one day put his name on the side of the ledger of second-generation boxers that fighters like Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Cory Spinks call home. The junior Cunningham begins that journey as he makes his professional debut in boxing’s capitol on April 29th, on a card titled “Sons of Legends,” at the Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. 

The elder Cunnigham’s pro career was just starting to ramp up when he and his wife brought young Steve Jr. into the world. Despite bestowing his first son with his own name, Cunningham did not originally plan on molding his offspring into a world class boxer. “From the cradle I was actually more like, ‘No, my son is not going to box.’ I don’t know why, but maybe because I saw how dirty this business could be at that time,” remembers Senior. “I was signed with Don King and they were frustrating years for me. I beat everybody they put in front of me, but it was just a very uncomfortable contractual situation. So I’m like I don’t want my son going through this.”

The way life worked out for the Cunninghams played a part in Steve Jr. developing an affinity for the sport of boxing. “My wife worked and I went to the gym,” recalls Steve Sr. “I would take him to the gym, packed in the car seat and at around seven, I’d have him workout with me. I didn’t want him sitting there doing nothing and getting into trouble at the gym. It wasn’t that he showed talent, but I was just like, ‘Why not have him box?’ If I was a lawyer I would send him to law school. Or if I were a doctor, I would send him to medical school. I’m a boxer and not just a boxer, but a two-time world champ. Let me give him a shot.”

Having a world champion father surely opens doors for an aspiring second generation boxer, but with that advantage comes some strings attached. “Being his son, you never get a light sparring [session] or any easy sparring,” explains Cunningham Jr. “Whoever spars you or comes to your area, you get the hardest sparring there is. They bring their game. I will see them spar somebody else and think, ‘Dang, you didn’t spar them nearly as hard you sparred me.” They try to test you or get over on you.” 

As Cunningham progressed in his pursuit of an amateur boxing career, he closely followed the career of his father as one might expect. The elder Cunningham has had a great career, but when you go up against the best in the world as many times as “USS” did, there are bound to be some setbacks. 

“There was one thing I remember, and I don’t think he remembers this: it was after the first Adamek fight,” describes Senior. “When we were in the locker room after the fight…and it was a great fight, it was smoking. Junior said ‘When I grow up, I’m going to beat him for you.’ And I was like alright man, cool. So we are going to find Adamek, and in a few years he will be old as hell and he’ll have to fight Junior now. I remember that. That has been on my mind for years.”

While Cunningham Jr. may not remember vowing to defend his father’s honor after the first of two fights his dad had with the great Tomasz Adamek, there were other tough nights he does remember. 

“The [Amir] Mansour fight was a crazy one because we were sitting there watching the fight and it was going good and then boom, he gets dropped,” remembers Cunningham Jr. of the 2014 bout.” And I looked over to my cousin and we started praying. Then he gets up and he gets dropped again. I thought, ‘It’s going bad, it’s going bad.’ Then he ends up coming back in the fight and whipping him. Finishing the fight and whipping him. It was really inspiring, we almost broke the ring celebrating that night.”

The two-time world champion father Steve Cunningham Jr. has always looked up to is also the man he looks up to from his stool in between rounds. The elder Cunningham did not always have confidence in his training ability, but found words of wisdom from the legendary Naazim Richardson that led him on the right path before a 2015 event held between fighters from Pittsburgh and fighters from Cuba. 

“I called Brother Naazim and I was biting my nails, telling him, ‘We have got to fight a Cuban. I am going to send Junior to live with you for two months.’ Brother Naazim was like, ‘Listen, you have everything you need to train him to beat this Cuban.’ I was nervous as heck, but what he said and with what happened, for him to say I had enough to train him to win that fight, that helped to propel me as a coach. 

As a fighter I excelled, but as a coach I didn’t know a damn thing. But I’ve been blessed to be under the wing of guys like Brother Naazim, Coach Shar’ron [Baker], Anthony Chase, Richie Giachetti…all of these guys I have trained under and I have stolen from, along with my own experience in the ring, and that’s what we get. With that we were able to beat a Cuban and I was like, ‘Wow, here we go.’” 

Just as the elder Cunningham began the only prolonged layoff of his pro career, Steve Jr. came onto the scene at the national level in 2018. “Starting out it was cool and the only tournaments I would do were the Silver Gloves,” explains Cunningham. “The Silver Gloves are cool, but nothing compared to the national tournaments. It was a great experience, but the nationals are another level. Three to four rings running at one time. They are just knocking the fights out. It’s pretty dope. It’s fast-paced. You’ve got to keep your head in the game, stay locked in and be ready.”

During the 2020 USA Boxing National Championships (which were held in April 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), the father-son duo of Steve Cunnighams did something maybe no other father and son have done together before: prepare for major boxing events that they each were going to compete in the same month. Just a couple weeks after the tournament, where Junior would end up short in the quarter-final round, the original Steve Cunningham competed for the first time in sanctioned action in over three years with a decision win over former MMA star Frank Mir in a boxing bout. 

“When we were at the tournament in Louisiana, I was training mostly myself for that [Mir] fight,” explains Senior. “I sparred Junior for that fight, because Frank is a southpaw and Junior is a southpaw. He helped get me ready for that fight, a few rounds, but I didn’t even spar a lot. Keep it real, I didn’t expect too much from Frank, but I got in shape. Junior gave me that southpaw look more than a few times during that national tournament.” 

Although Cunningham may have inherited some of his athleticism and ability to improve and grow as a fighter from his father, he did not completely inherit his dad’s height or overall size, being a middleweight. While the size discrepancy may alter some aspects of the sparring sessions between the two, Senior refuses to hold back on his ability out of necessity while sharing the ring with his first born. 

“With him being 160-pounds, of course I hold back on the power, but skillswise heck no, I have to match him on the skill,” says Cunningham Sr. proudly. “Because he’s throwing and he can go 100 and sometimes he’s caught me and it hurts. He hits hard. Skill-wise, I am at 100 [percent] with him, but powerwise of course I’m holding back a little. Because I could just overpower him and that’s not helping either one of us.” 

The more Cunningham Sr. has worked with his son in the ring, the more even the sessions have become. “There was one time we were sparring and I couldn’t get him,” recalls the senior Cunningham. “So I had to adjust my life after that. It’s been great. Of course I’ve seen his level stepping up, especially in the sparring. The things he does and the punches he chooses, so I’ve seen growth. Sparring me is the best thing for him on certain levels.” 

Despite his affinity for how national tournaments operate as events, Cunningham Jr.’s last national amateur experience was one of a handful that left a bad taste in his mouth for the system on a whole. In the immediate aftermath of the 2021 USA Boxing National Championships, the Cunninghams decided it was time for Junior to make the leap to the paid ranks. 

“A big part of the decision [to turn pro] was the last tournament that we were in,” recalls Cunningham Jr. of the December 2021 event in Louisiana. “I was boxing and did good in the first round. Then in the second round, I fought this tough dude [Ruben Salazar], but I was fighting two fights at the same time. I was fighting the ref and the fighter. I was boxing him and boxing him and the ref told me to stop running. I was moving, and I’m moving my head, and the ref started giving me eight counts. In the last round, he managed to squeeze in three eight counts to stop the fight. And the last eight count was on the bell. So it was really tough. So after that, we couldn’t take the amateurs anymore. We decided it was time to go pro.”

Cunningham Sr. shares his son’s frustration with how his last national tournament played out. “He’s beautifully boxing, and the referee tells him to stop running? And they find a way to give him three eight counts,” says Senior with frustration in his voice. “The last eight count was just him slipping. He slipped every punch that guy threw, only to get an eight count. I saw the look on his face, and I’m like, ‘I am sick of this happening to my kid.’” 

Amateur referees are in the rearview now for Team Cunningham as they have their sights set on success in the professional ranks. At age 19 and with his dad in his corner, Cunningham Jr. seems to feel he is right where he was always meant to be in his career at this point in his life. “It’s crazy because the way my career has gone up until now is exactly how I imagined it as a kid,” proclaims the junior Cunningham. “Almost exactly like how I imagined it growing up and looking up to my father.”

“USS” Cunningham is in agreement with his son that now is the time for the next phase of Junior’s career. “I didn’t want his spirit for boxing to get damaged from the way amateur boxing was treating him, so I said we are going pro,” explains Cunningham Sr. “It’s done. Even at 19, I feel he is ready. He wants this bad, he works hard and he is only going to get stronger and stronger. So this is it right here. Now it is time to build him into a world champion.” 

On April 29th in Las Vegas, Cunningham will make his debut on a card featuring sons of famous fighters like Tommy Morrison, Hasim Rahman, Roberto Duran and many others. One would think being featured in such a way for your pro debut would be intimidating, but Steve Cunningham Jr. sees the event in a different light. 

“I’ve always been a junior, so there has always been attention drawn to my name because of my father,” explains the young Cunningham. “Actually there is not as much pressure as there would be usually [by fighting on a show with other famous sons]. I love it. It is a great opportunity for me. I feel good. It’s everything I’ve been waiting for all my life. All of the things I’ve been doing have been leading up to this. I’m ready. Ready to put on a show.”

Mayweather, long known for his greatness in the ring and one of the most highly decorated athletes in all of sports is excited to return to the ring in this special event and location.

A long-time sparring partner of Mayweather’s during his career, and formerly trained by his late Uncle, Roger Mayweather, Moore says he’s in a unique position to give the great Mayweather problems when the two meet in May.

“I am excited to participate in this event,” said Moore. “Because of how much of the same training I received from Roger Mayweather, I am gonna be able to give Floyd real problems. I have been training hard to show everyone what ‘Dangerous’ Don Moore is all about and expose Floyd’s weaknesses. This is my shot, The time is now, Floyd isn’t invincible. Anyone can be beaten.”

In the hearts and minds of many, Anderson Silva is the greatest mixed martial artists of all time. Brazilian-American Silva holds the record for the longest title reign in UFC history at 2,457 days, including a UFC record 16 consecutive victories. As a pro boxer in his second, more recent career, Silva (2-0, 1 KO) already holds victories over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and MMA legend Tito Ortiz.

The deal is done, all nine figures of it, without any chance that Canelo Alvarez will face David Benavidez over the next year.

It’s not a surprise. It’s more of a pattern. Months ago, Canelo and his trainer, Eddy Reynoso, were clear that their plans did not include Benavidez.

If not now, when?

It’s an unanswered question. The pressure is on Benavidez to provide an answer.  Canelo put it there, squarely on his young shoulders, in interviews after Canelo’s May 7 date with light-heavyweight Dmitry Bivol on May 7 at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena was formally announced Wednesday.

Canelo repeated his mantra about his pursuit of history. He suggested there was no chance at making some against Benavidez or Jermall Charlo. He suggested that they needed to fight each other.

Mostly, he said they needed to bring more to the table in terms of legacy, a word that is at the cornerstone of the marketing for the Canelo-Bivol bout, the first in a rich Matchroom deal expected to lead to a third Canelo fight with Gennadiy Golovkin.

On the virtual fight poster, it says “Legacy Is Earned.’’ In social media, it comes with a hashtag, #legacyisearned. Intentional or not, the message to Benavidez and Charlo is that they haven’t earned enough of it.

“They have nothing to offer,’’ Canelo told reporters after the Bivol bout was announced at a news conference in San Diego. “I just want to make history, and they have nothing to offer me.’’

Canelo’s kind of history, of course, is attached to more than a hashtag. There’s a dollar sign, a very big one. According to some reports, the deal for perhaps three fights is worth $160 million.

That’s a lot of legacy, enough to be a powerful factor in any calculation of the risk-to-reward ratio.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. perfected it.

Canelo learned it.

It’s impossible to understand Canelo’s career without his loss to Mayweather on Sept. 14, 2013 at Vegas’ MGM Grand. The loss was a lesson, on both sides of the ropes for Canelo, who was 23 – two years younger than Benavidez – when he lost a decision to Mayweather.

In the eight-plus years since then, Canelo has evolved as a boxer. And a businessman. He has succeeded Mayweather at the top of the game because of what he learned from him.

There are two fundamentals: Knowing who to fight. And when to fight him.

It’s no coincidence that Canelo has waited until GGG turned 40 before a second rematch of their two controversial bouts, the first a draw and the second a Canelo victory by majority decision.

Assuming GGG beats Ryota Murata on April 9 in Japan, he’ll face Canelo, still well within his prime. He’ll turn 32 on July 18. Insert the respective ages to the risk-to-reward equation, and GGG looks less risky than a 25-year-old Benavidez, especially for a payday that could exceed $50 million.

Put it this way: Who would you fight? Dumb question. It’s GGG every time.

It’s hard to see how the emerging Benavidez ever gets included in Canelo’s application of the risk-reward ratio. Benavidez, expected to fight Canadian David Lemieux in May perhaps in hometown Phoenix, is just entering his prime. He’ll be 30 in five years. By then, Canelo might have moved from the gym to the golf course for good.

Benavidez might be to Canelo what Antonio Margarito was to Mayweather. Mayweather never fought Margarito. That’s not because he couldn’t beat him. He could. He probably would have. But it would have been a very tough fight. Margarito was tough and aggressive. He was dangerous. Manny Pacquiao beat him, scoring a one-sided decision in November 2010 on the Dallas Cowboys’ home field in Arlington, Tex.

But Pacquiao got hurt by a huge body shot midway through the bout from Margarito. It took something from Pacquiao. The Filipino great was never quite the same fighter, so relentless and fearless early in his pro career.

Pacquiao won. But he paid a price. Mayweather wouldn’t go there. A likely victory wasn’t worth the potential cost.

It looks as if Canelo sees Benavidez the same way. Canelo would probably beat him. But Benavidez’ size, high volume of punches and relentless pursuit could take a toll. The risk is a steep price, one not worth it on a scale that has rewarded Canelo with Mayweather-like money.

Kaz Grala will lead the fight on the track as TMTR’s driver for select races in 2022. Grala has already proven success at Daytona as the youngest NASCAR winner in the track’s storied history. The 23-year-old driver has finished in the top-10 in half of his NASCAR Cup Series races to date, including his debut when he drove through the field to an impressive seventh-place finish on the Daytona Road Course.

Brent Johnson of ONE Entertainment will handle Brand Mayweather activations along with James “P-Reala” McNair, president of The Money Team.

“The main reason for going to Las Vegas was to get some altitude training. Cardiff has some altitude like Las Vegas, and there’s no altitude in Flint. I wanted to have my lungs feel that burn. I ran at 10,000 feet of elevation.

“The opportunity with Mayweather just kind of presented itself. Floyd heard I was coming and he opened up his gym to me and my team. It was great to see him spar and be in his presence. It was great to talk to him too and really see what he’s like.

“It’s great to hear that he’s a huge fan of me and that him and his kids like to watch my fights. It was a great experience overall.

“Floyd told me I was going in the right direction. Not a lot of U.S. fans get to have the experience of going to see what fans in the U.K. are like. He told me a lot about his experience fighting Ricky Hatton.

“We talked a lot about my skills, but also about the difference between amateurs and pros. In the pros you really have to stay calm and take your time. Even in two minute rounds, he was telling me to slow down and really see those shots coming.

“Floyd’s in great shape. He was sparring a 21-year-old for eight rounds and he wasn’t even always taking breaks between rounds. He can still do whatever he wants to do inside that ring. If he wanted to, he’d give all those guys problems at 147 and 154. From what I saw, his legs and his motor are still working.”

With apologies to Floyd Mayweather Jr., Andre Ward and few others, defeat is a little bit like a scar. It’s hard to get through a boxing career without one.

The key is what to do with it. There’s denial. There’s delusion. There’s blaming someone else. Anyone else.

But there’s never much healing in any of that, at least not in a sport so singularly lonely. There’s no backup quarterback to blame. No dog who ate the homework.

There’s only the fighter, looking in the mirror and at months of shadow-boxing with the personal torment left in the turbulent wake of a loss. Tough to win that one, yet a victory is often the defining fundamental in a game that’s always been about adversity.

Vasiliy Lomachenko has figured that out.

His understanding of defeat, even his empathy for a bitter rival now dealing with one, is evident in the days before the Ukrainian’s bid to get back into the lightweight title mix Saturday (ESPN, 6 pm PT/9 pm ET) against Richard Commey at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

His date with Commey comes just two weeks after Teofimo Lopez lost the 135-pound belts and his composure to George Kambosos Jr. in the same building. Lopez upset Lomachenko, taking the belts and knocking out his pound-for-pound supremacy with a unanimous decision in October 2020.

Lopez went on to rip Lomachenko, ridiculing him for saying he suffered an injury to his right shoulder. Lomachenko moved on, underwent surgery, a second procedure on a shoulder that had been injured against Jorge Linares in his first fight at lightweight.

Lomachenko, who still believes the scorecard loss to Lopez should have been judged a draw, wanted a rematch.

No way, Lopez said often and always with a dismissive tone that suggested Lomachenko (15-2, 11 KOs) was yesterday’s news.

He’s not, of course. Commey (30-3, 27 KOs) is his second fight in a comeback that began with a ninth-round stoppage of Masayoshi Nakatani in June.  

Given the trash-talking rancor left over from Lopez’s upset of Lomachenko nearly 15 months ago, however, it was easy – too easy – to think Lomachenko might experience some schadenfreude – a uniquely German word that means taking pleasure in another’s misfortune.

No, Lomachenko said Thursday during a session with reporters after the formal part of the final news conference for the Commey bout.

“I am not happy, because I understand what he’s feeling,’’ Lomachenko said when asked how he felt about the Lopez loss. “I was in the same situation.’’

It’s a situation that the once-beaten Lopez is just beginning to confront. Questions linger, including troubling news about his physical condition at opening bell. ESPN quoted a doctor as saying he could have died because of a breathing issue.

Lomachenko went on to say that he was happy Lopez would recover and “get out of this situation.’’

The situation – dealing with defeat – is a place he has been a couple of times. He had to come back from defeat after just his second pro bout – a loss to Orlando Salido. In retrospect, that defeat might have been more of a bruising way to pay some apprenticeship dues against a tough gatekeeper.

Lomachenko arrived in the pro ranks as perhaps the most celebrated Olympic boxer ever. He won two gold medals, 2008 and again in 2012. Lomachenko responded to Salido’s brutal welcome to the pros by winning titles at featherweight, junior-lightweight and lightweight.

He did, he says, mostly because of the way a defeat forces a fighter to accept accountability and then re-commit to the craft.

“Losing is not comfortable, but if you have a goal, you have to continue,’’ he said.

For Lomachenko, the goal has always been there. He talked about it in a compelling, Top Rank-produced video with Hall-of-Fame inductee Roy Jones Jr., his boyhood hero.

Manny Pacquiao got back into the gym for some honest work for his summer date with Errol Spence a few days before Floyd Mayweather pulled off another heist, an exhibition he called legalized bank robbery.

The timing was mere coincidence, yet symbolic of how the two are connected by opposite paths each has taken since their fight six-plus years ago fell woefully short of expectations.

The differences have never been more polarized. Pacquiao still embraces risk; Mayweather has never been more risk-averse. Despite their divergent paths since Mayweather’s unanimous decision in 2015 over Pacquiao in the richest fight ever, danger is there for both in what looks to be a dilemma for a troubled business and its polarized fan-base.

Applaud Pacquiao for his courage, but worry that a younger, bigger Spence might hurt him. Defend Mayweather’s right to make as much as he can, but worry about his legacy.

Mayweather’s string of cash grabs continued Sunday in Miami against one of the Pauls. Logan or Jake or Rand? I can’t keep them straight. I also didn’t watch a show without an official winner, although both corners apparently scored a victory for their bank accounts. Showtime’s pay-per-view telecast was expected to hit the one-million mark, according to multiple reports.

Mayweather still sells, although recent photos of him made me think of a word applied to a former boxing entrepreneur and ex-president who was back on the bully pulpit in North Carolina last weekend. The New York Times called him diminished.

Diminished might just be another way of saying Mayweather, 44, is beginning to look old. Apparently, nothing about his net worth has been diminished. Still, there’s a question about whether his string of legalized bank robberies is diminishing the legacy he has defined and marketed with his official record, 50-0.

From this corner, TBE — The Best Ever — looks to be a diminishing acronym. Stop The Steal, Floyd, or the unbeaten legacy will become unrecognizable.

There might be opportunity in that. Mayweather’s diminishment might be Pacquiao’s enrichment. But the risk is huge. In age, Pacquiao is a lot closer to Mayweather than Spence. At 31, Spence is squarely in his prime.

He’s also bigger, a big welterweight, who at opening bell on August 21 is sure to be the middleweight he is about to become. Think Antonio Margarito. Pacquiao beat him decisively on the scorecards in a junior-middleweight bout on the Dallas Cowboys home field in Arlington, Tex. But Pacquiao called it his toughest fight. The bigger Margarito hurt him with body punches along the ropes midway through the bout. Hurt him 11 years ago.

The question is whether Pacquiao can still endure — and recover — from that kind of punishment. He thinks he can, although he hasn’t answered an opening bell in a couple of years. When he faces Spence, it will be about 25 months since his last fight, a split decision over Keith Thurman in July 2019.

“It’ll be a good fight,” Pacquiao told The Philippine Star Wednesday after nearly a week of some preliminary work at his home in Manila. “A lot of world titles will be at stake. Spence is unbeaten, younger. But I’m confident, I have the experience, speed and power.”

The Filipino Senator with Presidential aspirations also has wear and tear, all inevitable after 26 years in the pro ring. The middle-aged Pacquiao is the early underdog. He was at minus-240 this week, according to various on-line betting sites That translates to a 29.41-percent chance of victory. There might be a better chance of him getting hurt.

But the role is not new. Oscar De La Hoya was a huge favorite, Then, there was also fear that a smaller Pacquiao might get hurt. Pacquiao stopped him, forcing De La Hoya to quit after eight rounds. It was a career-defining moment. A moment that happened 13 years ago.

For now, Pacquiao seems to enjoy being the underdog. Maybe, it makes him feel younger.

“It was the same trend when I fought Thurman,” said Pacquiao, who was expected to move his training to his hometown, General Santos City, on Thursday. “In the beginning, he was the favorite, but as people found out how I was training and saw my speed and power hadn’t changed, the odds reversed by the time the fight started.”

He’s an underdog with a legacy that will always be compared to a rival moving in another direction, yet on a parallel track. Each has a risk-to-reward ratio. Each also has own way of calculating it.

For Mayweather, it’s the safest possible bet on more money, his nickname. For Pacquiao, it’s another risky chance at history.

The most anticipated boxing exhibition, perhaps in history, took place tonight at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. YouTube sensation Logan Paul surprisingly took the 50-0, 12-time, five-division boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather the distance in an eight-round exhibition.  The brave YouTube star stepped to the 44-year-old retired Mayweather in the opening round ending the first round with a flurry at the end of the round, not many if any landed. The 26-year-old Paul intelligently used his size advantage on Mayweather, at times like a weighted blanket. Mayweather was able to counter punch the bigger Paul and landed a strong left hook in round four that seemed to show flashes of the Floyd Mayweather of old. There were times it looked as if the Champ was going to kick it up a notch and take out the younger Paul, but the young Maverick survived the biggest night of his life.  At the end of the day, it was about entertainment, and the crowd, although a bit disappointed they did not see a knockout, they did witness the greatest boxer of our era for perhaps the final time in a big-time boxing event.

Badou Jack KO’s Late Replacement Colina in Four

Light heavyweight Badou Jack 24-3-3 (14KO) dropped Dervin Colina 15-1(13KO) 3 times in the fourth round to secure a KO win.  Jack was dominant from the opening bell, starting unusually fast, letting his hands go. Colina often held and was deducted 2 points for holding to avoid the attack from Jack.  Colina was a late replacement after Jean Pascal tested positive for a number of banned substances, perhaps Jack’s unusual early aggression was frustration stemming from Pascal’s positive tests, in which he was very vocally upset on social media.

“People can say it’s bad luck but this is all from God. And I just have to be patient. This is God’s plan.

“The game plan was just to outbox him. Everything else will come. Definitely, hit the body. He was a little soft in the body but give him respect. He came out on short notice. He was supposed to fight next week but this is a different level.

“My goal is to become a three-division world champion. I walk around very heavy. I’m about to be 38 this year and I don’t like to cut weight so I’ll get with my team and see what’s next.

“He was trying to hold a lot and survive. I fight better when I fight better opponents. I was a little sloppy. The world class fights are when I perform the best.”

Luis Arias Upsets Jarrett Hurd in the Rain in Miami

In a thrilling junior middleweight battle, Luis Arias fought the fight of his life with a hard-earned split decision victory over former unified 154-pound champion Jarrett Hurd 24-2(16KO). Arias 19-2-1(9KO) started fast and very aggressive from the opening bell, often landing an overhand right while coming forward. Arias baited Hurd into an early inside brawl when midway through the second round a torrential Miami downpour halted the action when Arias slipped on the wet CashApp logo in the center of the ring. The rain slowed and Arias went right back to work coming after Hurd mauling with overhand rights.  Hurd had his moments in the middle rounds while taking a lot of shots himself. In a wild 9th round after another rain clean-up, Hurd scored a knockdown, however, it was a slip from the wet canvas.  Arias went on to potentially win the 9th round.  Arias came forward in the final round looking to take Hurd out, both fighters took several shots including a big shot from Hurd at the final bell that appeared to drop Arias. The official cards read 95-94 Hurd, 97-93 Arias 96-93 Arias. 15Rounds.com scored 97-92 Arias.

“I came in here and challenged the No. 1 guy at 154 pounds and we fought somewhere halfway and I was able to edge a decision. Props to Jarrett Hurd. You fought a great fight. Honestly, you could have had me out of there. I was definitely buzzed. If you would have found a way, I definitely would have gone down.

“He is a great fighter and like I told him afterwards, he came in here and fought his heart out. He definitely should have taken more time off with what he was dealing with outside of the ring.

“We’re here. I never quit on myself. People close to me were telling me to get a job and quit boxing. I just beat a former champion. Don’t ever give up on yourself.

“I would like to thank Ismael Salas as well. I came to him semi-late. About six or seven weeks and I needed to change something in my game plan to beat Jarrett. The things I was doing before would have gotten me a loss tonight. I needed somebody to just tweak a little bit and put my game up a little bit so I could beat this champion. Jarrett is a hell of a fighter and he’s not done.

“My key to victory was staying confident. Staying confident and sticking to the game plan. Knowing I’m the better fighter. Knowing I’m in better shape and I hit harder. I’m a better boxer and my defense is better. I’m better than him and I just proved it.

“The game plan was to jump on him, get the early lead and keep it. I felt like in the middle rounds I was wining the fight but you never know because I wasn’t the A-side in this fight. I buzzed him a lot especially on the inside. If we were fighting at 154, he would have gotten knocked out. Everybody knows it.

“I’ve been around the Charlos. They are great champions. I’m not going to sit here and call out [Jermell] Charlo. I have to earn my stripes. Had I beat Hurd at 154, maybe I could mention him. But I can’t. The goal is to go down to 154 pounds and fight a former challenger.”

“I’m not sure what went wrong tonight. I believe I won the fight. I had a knockdown. I could make a hundred excuses but it wasn’t a great performance.

“The plan coming out in the first round was to box. I wasn’t as confident in my feet as the rain came down, so I had to go toe-to-toe more. That wasn’t really what we trained for, so I was a bit sloppy.

“I’ll take the rematch at whatever weight. I know I’m the better man.”

Chad Johnson dropped in Exhibition

Six-time NFL Pro Bowler Chad “Ocho Cinco” Johnson showed up, and showed out in his hometown of Miami in a four-round battle with MMA and bare-knuckle veteran Brian Maxwell. The southpaw “Ocho Cinco” got off to a good start showing his boxing skills with footwork, athleticism, catching Maxwell with right hooks, and occasional straight left hands while avoiding Maxwell’s attack, most of the early rounds. The fight turned scrappy at times with Maxwell from Roanoke, VA who holds a combined record of 2-6 in MMA and Bareknuckle saw an opportunity to take his idol down.  Maxwell kept pressing and caught Johnson relaxing a bit in the final round and dropped the former Pro Bowler Johnson who got up to see the final bell. 15Rounds.com scored the fight 38-37 Maxwell.  The fight was declared a Spirited Exhibition by ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr.

Johnson has been training in the offseason since high school and held his camp for this fight with the Charlo Brothers in Houston. Johnson said afterward he was happy to “Get this off of his bucket list” and “I am ready for Conor”.

Brian Maxwell

“I had fun. I had two months to get ready for this and I want to thank God for keeping us safe out there. I want to thank Floyd, Leonard Ellerbe and my whole team for allowing me to check this off my bucket list. My life has always been about taking chances and doing crazy stuff and this is just one off my bucket list. It’s a message for a lot of people who are scared to fail, scared to lose, scared to take chances to go out there and live. Don’t be scared to fail, it’s okay. I don’t box. I fight but it ain’t in the ring so of course I was a little sloppy.”

Mayweather Promotions Adrian Benton improved to 5-0 (3KO) with a unanimous decision win over the hard-charging Pedro Cruz 1-1(1KO) fighting out of San Jose California. Cruz came forward the whole fight and found early success, finding the swift-footed Benton in a competitive scrap. Benton started timing Cruz with counterpunching and angles, separating with the lead as the fight wore on. By the fourth round, Benton was having his way with Cruz, who never stopped coming forward. The cards read 40-36 thrice.  I gave Cruz the second round.

Hard punching super lightweight Jean Carlos Torres 19-0 (15 KO) dropped Zack Kuhn 10-8-1 three times on his way to a destructive second-round knockout. A slow-starting first round quickly heated up when Torres started letting his hands go, dropping Kuhn twice in the first round. A ripping left hook from Torres immediately dropped Kuhn ending the fight at 41 of round two.

Highly decorated amateur and Mayweather Promotions rookie Jalil Hackett out of Washington D.C. took his talents to Miami, and made an impressive successful debut with an early first-round destruction over debuting Dallas, TX product Angelo Diaz.  Hackett came out firing, hitting Diaz nearly at will, and finally dispensed Diaz in the corner with a slick hook and straight right hand resulting in a knockout win 1:10 of round one.

The Floyd Mayweather vs Logan Paul event kicked off with competitive professional boxing as Buckeye, Arizona’s Dorian Mark Khan Jr 1-0 (1KO) who made his professional debut in hot Miami style with a TKO win over Jonathan Gray 0-4.  The southpaw Kahn was sharpshooting from round one, and aggressively progressed through round two dropping the game Gray who, by advisement of his corner did not answer the bell through for the third round.

A huge crowd collected at the Hard Rock live in Hollywood Florida for the Logan Paul Floyd Mayweather weigh-in.

26 year old, 6’ 3” Logan Paul weighed 189.5 a day ahead of his clash with boxing great 44 years old 5’ 8” Floyd Mayweather who came in 34.5 pounds lighter at 155.  

The exhibition is set for tomorrow with no rehydration rule in place meaning Paul could come in much heavier.  The match will be held with 10-ounce gloves and no scoring or decision will be called at the conclusion.  Knockouts are legal.

“I’ve been here before, I know what it takes,” Mayweather said. “I fought every different style you can possibly fight. Height don’t win fights, weight don’t win fights, fighting wins fights and I can fight.”

“He’s not ready,” Paul said after weighing in. “He doesn’t know what to expect. This isn’t the biggest fight of my life, it’s the biggest fight of his life. … I’m going to get it done, it’s a fight and anything can happen. Floyd’s not ready, that’s all I can say.”

Also weighing in for a separate exhibition matchup was Former NFL star wide receiver and Miami native Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson 179.5 who will be making his unofficial boxing debut against MMA and bare-knuckle boxing veteran Brian Maxwell 183.5.  This match will be the first of four on the main card starting at 8 pm EST.  (PPV $49.99)

Friday’s press conference featured two-division champion Badou Jack and unbeaten Dervin Colina, who meet in the 10-round light heavyweight co-main event, and former unified champion “Swift” Jarrett Hurd and veteran contender Luis Arias, who square off in a 10-round attraction.

Also participating in the press conference was former NFL star Chad Johnson and versatile fighter Brian Maxwell, as Johnson makes his boxing debut in a special exhibition against Maxwell to kick off the pay-per-view telecast at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

“I’m just thankful that I’m still fighting on Sunday night. Now we have a new opponent and it’s going to be the same outcome. I’m in great shape and I can’t wait.

“Colina is just another guy. I respect him for coming in and stepping up as a late replacement. But I was going to win this fight on Sunday whether it was Pascal or anyone.

“I’m very frustrated about Jean Pascal. But I’m a pro and I can adjust no matter who is in front of me. I’m disappointed because I won the first fight against Pascal and I waited 18 months to get my revenge.

“I have a little anger that might get taken out on Colina, but it’s nothing personal, just business that I’m here to take care of on Sunday night.

“I don’t really care about the title too much, I really just cared about getting that revenge against Pascal. I waited so long for this and I could have taken different fights while I waited.

“We’ve had an amazing training camp with my new trainer Kay Koroma in Colorado Springs. I have a chip on my shoulder. I think a lot of people forgot who I was. I had the best resume in the weight class. Come Sunday, I’m going to remind everyone who I am.

“It’s always strictly business and it’ll be the same on Sunday. Arias is obsessed with my weight and thinks I’m struggling. But he needs to focus on what he needs to do on Sunday night.

“I don’t know where I’m rated right now, but I’m the best fighter at 154 pounds. Showing that to the world is the goal on Sunday.

“We just took it back to the basics in training camp with my coach Kay Koroma. You can always learn more in the sport.

“I’ve been boxing for 15 years now and coach Koroma just helped me evolve the things I already knew. He’s got me not just coming forward and using my strength, but moving around and boxing a little bit.”

“I think the narrative is they needed an opponent for Jarrett Hurd, and I wasn’t looking so great lately. But people tend to forget I was 18-0 before I got my first blemish. When I was with Floyd Mayweather, I was 9-0 and that’s when I was most comfortable. That’s the mentality I’m taking into this fight.

“I’ve been around Floyd since December. I’ve been in Vegas training in the altitude, just like Hurd. I’m in tip-top shape for this fight and he still has to figure out how he’s going to fight.

“Now the boxing world is going to be watching this fight. I’m going to be on my Ps and Qs and he won’t have to look for me. He will have to pick and choose once he gets hit on Sunday what style he wants to fight.

“I feel really good. I’ve been using boxing to prepare for football throughout the years, but I’ve never done it to this magnitude. To prepare for an actual fight, is something new. I’m facing a guy who does this for a living, so I’m not taking this lightly at all.

“I was always nervous before every kickoff. So I’d be a fool to say I’m not nervous going into something where I’m out of my element.

“One thing I’m extremely good at, is when there’s lights, cameras and a crowd, is going in there and entertaining.

“Why not fight Logan Paul? He’s huge on YouTube. He has a huge following. Before I even knew about YouTube, I was huge in boxing. And when you bring his world with my world, man it’s going to be crazy.

“I’m glad he’s got confidence. I’m glad he believes in himself. Last time I checked, all 50 fighters that I faced, they all said the same thing.

“Most of the time when I go out there and fight, I’m giving up 20 pounds. When I was fighting at 140, the guys I was fighting were going up to 160. When I was fighting at 147, guys were going up to 167 within 24 hours. I don’t really worry about the weight. Once again, fighting wins fights.

“I look at it as going out, having a good time, and entertaining the people. I do what I want to do, when I want to do it, and how I want to do it.

Jack won the 168-pound world title with a majority decision against Anthony Dirrell in 2015 and successfully defended the belt three times before being handed a hard-fought majority draw against James DeGale in one of 2017’s best fights. In his first bout at 175 pounds, Jack stopped Nathan Cleverly to pick up the WBA light heavyweight title before fighting to a majority draw against then WBC champion Adonis Stevenson in May 2018. After dropping a narrow fight to Pascal in 2019, Jack’s most recent outing saw him earn a unanimous decision over Blake McKernan in November 2020.

The 33-year-old Colina (15-0, 13 KOs) lives in Medellin, Colombia, and is a native of Venezuela. He steps in on short notice to make his United States debut against Jack. Colina has competed at both super middleweight and light heavyweight in recent years and is riding a six-fight knockout streak into June 6. Colina has been training with renowned coach Stacy McKinley for the last two months in Pompano Beach, Florida.

Paul and Hall of Famer Floyd Mayweather are just days away from their highly anticipated June 6 showdown. Paul was very confident stating he would hand the legend Mayweather his first loss.  Paul stated he weighed194 today after a long camp in Puerto Rico with trainer Milton Lacroix and his team. He also said they do not have Floyds hat.  Paul looked very good on the jump rope, and threw some heavy punches on the gigantic heavy bag at the legendary 5th Street Gym.  His mitt work was questionable however as he resembled the novice professional he actually is despite landing a PPV fight with who was once a king of the sport. Mayweather sees this as a legal robbery and showed much emotion and anger after the younger Paul snatched his hat in Miami a couple of weeks ago.

“This whole thing is surreal. Everything about it. I told my manager and we kind of had an inside joke that until I get in the ring with him, I didn’t think this fight was happening. But I think it’s safe to say that I can believe it now. I think it’s happening. It’s fight week. I can’t imagine Floyd would back out now, but who knows? Old man fakes an injury. Gets scared of the big kid. I’m excited.

“Weight is great and we’re about at 195. Energy is great and I feel strong, fast, sharp. I have no complaints. This is the best shape I’ve ever been in. And I need to be because it’s an eight-round fight. It’s the longest fight I’ve ever fought. So I have to be ready.”

On working out at the historic 5th Street Gym:

“There are greats who’ve fought in here. You have to put respect where respect is due. I just want to come in here and work my ass off. It’s such an honor to be in the presence of such great people in such a historic environment.”

Why this fight will be different than Conor McGregor or Canelo Alvarez against Mayweather:

“I’m just not them. I’m not going in there at 155 pounds. I’m not going in there with the fight meaning the entire world to me. I have nothing to lose. This whole thing is going to be fun for me. I’m going to play with Floyd – gonna dog him and hit him hard. I’m going to break him down physically, mentally, everything. I don’t like comparing myself to other guys. As great as they might be, I’m not them.”
