Quillin stops Zerafa in five

Peter Quillin
Former world champion Peter Quillin stopped unheralded Michael Zerafa in round five of their scheduled 10-round Middleweight bout at the Foxwoods Casino Resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Quillin got the better of the action over the first 4-plus rounds. In round five, Quillin landed a right hand that staggered Zerafa back and a follow-up booming right sent Zerafa crumbling to the canvas and the fight was stopped at

Zerafa was removed from the ring on a stretcher.

Quillin, 160 lbs of Brooklyn, NY is 32-0-1 with 23 knockouts. Zerafa, 162 lbs of Melbourne, Australia is 17-22.

The win for Quillin now sets up a match that has brewing for a couple years with WBA Middleweight champion, Danny Jacobs. That bout will take place on December 5 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

PETER QUILLIN

“It is hard to celebrate a performance like that, especially when someone is leaving on a stretcher. Unfortunately that is part of the game. I just pray that he gets better and gets home to Australia safe and sound.

“I made a bad mistake in my past when I fought Miranda. I learned that you have to give every guy credit.

“What’s important is that I’m ready for Danny Jacobs. Now it’s time for Brooklyn to see me and Danny Jacobs. We’ve waited for a long time for it.

“I like Danny because I’m a big fan of his. But business is business unfortunately.

“[To Jacobs] We can do it right here if you want to take off that suit and put on those gloves. Lets do it right now.

“I’m back in camp on Monday. I’m getting ready for Danny Jacobs.

“Right now he’s the champ, I’m the challenger. I like to be in that position. It motivates me. I fight for all the kids who were told they wouldn’t make it.”

DANIEL JACOBS, Middleweight World Champion is expected to take on Quillin on December 5.

“I’m from Brownsville in Brooklyn. I never ran and I never will.

“December 5 at Barclays Center. I’m the champion and he’s the challenger.

“I don’t know how it’s going to go down, but it’s going to be a great fight.

“In the sport of boxing, you can’t make too many friends.

“It will be one of the biggest fights that Brooklyn has had in a long time.

“I’m a mover, I’m a power puncher and I have a high boxing IQ. He has trouble with guys that move and I can think on the fly.

“This [fight] is all the motivation I needed…what other motivation do you need to get your butt in the gym and get prepared?

“They call me the ‘Miracle Man’. It’s no secret that I have motivation to be the best I can be. Come December 5, Brooklyn is going to have a new star.”

Jermall Charlo captured the IBF Jr. Middleweight title with an emphatic 3rd round stoppage over Cornelius Bundrage.

In round one, Charlo dropped Bundrage with a perfect counter right. In round two, Charlo sent Bundrage down with all things a jab. Charlo knocked Bundrage down in round three when he landed a right and followed up with a barrage. Charlo finished the deal with a perfect right hand that sent Bundrage down for a fourth and final time an the bout was stopped at 2:33 of round three.

Charlo, 153 lbs of Houton, TX is now 22-0 with 17 knockouts. Bundrage, 153 lbs of Detroits, MI is 34-6.

Charlo landed 33-107 punches.

JERMALL CHARLO

“I’m the champion of the world. It’s all God-given. I couldn’t ask for anything better. I feel good.

“You never put a dog in a pen with a lion. I said I was going to do what I was going to do.

“This is the future. I am the future of boxing.

“I studied and I stayed ready. K-9 got cut and I stayed ready. When I turned pro seven years ago, I didn’t know this would be possible.

“I was ready for 12 rounds, and I knew he was ready for 12 rounds.

“I’ve finally made it to the championship status. To be classified as a world champion, it’s history.

“The fight went exactly how we thought it would. It was getting rough and I was ready for it. It was just a matter of time. It’s the best feeling in the world.

“I want to become even better. I want to defend my title and show everyone how good I am.”

CORNELIUS BUNDRAGE

“You win some, you lose some. The problem was, I’ve been inactive. I was in there with a good fighter who has been active and is hungry.

“I’m older and have to stay active to stay with these young guys. I’m not going anywhere. I have to stay active to see punches coming.”

2012 U.S. Olympian Marcus Browne scored a 1st round stoppage over former champion Gabriel Campillo in a scheduled 10-round Light Heavyweight bout.

Browne sent Campillo down with a hard left hand and then a body shot. Browne finished off Campillo with a straight left for a 2nd knockdown and the fight was stopped at

Browne, 175 lbs of Staten Island, NY is 16-0 with 12 knockouts. Campillo, 179 lbs of Madrid, Spain is 25-8-1.

MARCUS BROWNE

“My performance was definitely a statement to everyone in the light heavyweight division – watch out. We’re here!

“He was standing straight up and my trainer said to hit him with a nice straight jab. I threw the 1-2 and then I followed up.

“I took my time and just let it come.

“My trainer Gary Stark told me to come around the arms and that’s what I did. You can see it.”

Live coverage begins at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT on NBC.

The undercard, which is set to kick off at 1 p.m. ET, will feature two of the brightest young up-and-coming stars in all of boxing putting their undefeated records on the line as Browne and Centeno compete in their separate 10-round matchups.

A 2012 U.S. Olympian, Browne has been very impressive since making his pro debut in November 2011.The 24-year-old Staten Island-native is coming off his two most impressive victories to date this year. In May, Browne dominated Cornelius White (21-3) over 10 rounds at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Prior to that, in April, Browne scored an impressive sixth-round TKO over perennial contender Aaron Pryor Jr. Browne is looking to throw his name into the mix of the top fighters in the 175lb. division, and an impressive showing against the former world champion Campillo would do just that.

Campillo is 3-1 in his last four bouts, including a huge upset stoppage victory over previously undefeated Thomas Williams Jr. (17-0) in August of last year. The 36-year-old owns victories over Beibut Shumenov, Hugo Hernan Garay and Mirzet Bajrektarevic over a career that dates back to 2002. The fighter out of Madrid, Spain knows that if he is going to make another run at a light heavyweight title, he cannot afford another loss.

Oxnard, California’s Centeno has long been one of boxing’s top prospects with victories over Ayi Bruce, Keandre Leatherwood, Angel Osuna and Gerardo Ibarra. In his most recent fight, he faced his stiffest test to date against James De La Rosa and passed with flying colors, scoring a spectacular fifth-round knockout. Ready to make his move on the middleweight elite, Centeno will take on the 26-year-old Maciec out of Lubin, Poland. Maciec enters the bout on a five-fight win streak, including victories over Lanardo Tyner and previously unbeaten fighters Jussi Koivula and Sasu Karapetyan. Maciec is 15-1-1 in his last 17 bouts and is ready to show the world that he belongs at the top of the 160lb. division when he makes his U.S. debut.

The Browne or Centeno fight could end up as a swing bout for the NBC broadcast pending the outcome of the two scheduled televised bouts.

ADONIS STEVENSON vs. SAKIO BIKA, ARTUR BETERBIEV vs. GABRIEL CAMPILLO FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

HBO Boxing After Dark Weigh-In: Adonis Stevenson vs Tony Bellew
QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC (April 1, 2015) – During Wednesday’s final press conference at Le Bonne Entente in Quebec City, both Adonis “Superman” Stevenson and Sakio “The Scorpion” Bika promised a knockout when they meet in the main event of the debut presentation of Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on CBS Television Network this Saturday, April 4, at 3 p.m. ET/Noon PT.

The hard-hitting Stevenson (25-1, 21 KOs) will defend his light heavyweight world championship against former super middleweight world champion Bika (32-6-3, 21 KOs) in the main event from the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City.

The case was the same with the co-main event fighters as both undefeated light heavyweight and two-time Russian Olympian Artur Beterbiev (7-0, 7 KOs) and former light heavyweight world champion Gabriel Campillo (25-6-1, 12 KOs) expected to win via KO this Saturday afternoon. Campillo, sporting a Tom Brady jersey, even promised he would win in dramatic fashion like this year’s Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots.

Below are quotes from the fighters and trainers from Wednesday’s press conference:

ADONIS STEVENSON:
“I know Sakio is going to try to take my title, but I’m prepared for that.

“I know he was a champion. I made the move from 168 to 175 pounds and it worked well for me. I expect him to bring his best at 175 pounds. He’s a former champ so I’m preparing to face a champion.

“I’m looking for the KO because I’m from the Kronk Gym. Knockouts sell. But I can go 12 rounds, that’s not a problem. I train for 12 rounds.

“My trainer has given me a great plan. He knows Sakio Bika very well and we’ll see what happens in the ring.

“Bika is still going to have the same power moving up in weight. He should actually be stronger.

“I’m very focused because I know Bika is very dangerous. I know he’s going to come into the ring and try to give me trouble.

“I’m a knockout artist. I can do a lot in the ring, but first and foremost I’m a knockout artist.

“I’d love to unify the belts eventually, but I’ll let my manager Al Haymon take care of that.

“My mentor Emanuel Steward always told me that as soon as I enter the ring the knockout is what sells. I’ll definitely be going for the knockout this Saturday on CBS.”

“I’m ready to go toe-to-toe. Adonis Stevenson vs. Sakio Bika on CBS, baby.”

SAKIO BIKA:
“To beat a great fighter you have to be your best. I’m looking to take the WBC title back home.

“I’ve fought everyone – I’ve never ducked an opponent – and I don’t know if he can handle the pressure.

“I feel more comfortable at 175 pounds. I want to test the big boy [Stevenson] and I feel like I can do that. On Saturday we’ll see.

“He’s knocked people out, but I’ve never been knocked out. On Saturday I’ll be the one to knock him out.

“I’m very hungry to get a world title back. I trained very hard at light heavyweight to get a title back.

“I didn’t come here to Canada just to walk and look around. I came here to take this belt back home and I’m very confident I’m going to do that.

“Training camp went very well, we put in good work and now we’re here in Canada ready to shock the world.”

JAVAN “SUGAR” HILL:
“Training camp was very good as always. Nothing different, just hard work perfecting his boxing and the basic fundamentals. We’re looking for him to make a mistake and catch him.

“The way you prepare for an unorthodox fighter like Bika is to make sure your basics are sound. You have to have a good jab, you have to have good movement and you have to have ‘super power’ And I have “Superman.

“Emanuel also told me the knockout sells. It’s something that we both know and it’s something that is imbedded in us. We’re looking for the knockout on April 4. Sometimes I see things that Adonis is looking to do before he does it. So I’ll just be sitting there waiting for Adonis to catch Sakio Bika making a mistake and getting a knockout.

“I’m super proud to represent Kronk Gym. That’s why I wear my hat here. Kronk to me is like my family name and that’s what I live by. I was born into Kronk when I was a little kid going to a tournament with my uncle Emanuel and all I remember is the Kronk fighters winning. And that’s what I do now: win.

“Adonis is an artist, he’s a KO artist. My prediction for Saturday is a knockout on CBS.

“There’s been a lot of talk and now it’s time for action. Toe-to-toe on April 4. Don’t miss it.”

KEVIN CUNNINGHAM:
“We had a great training camp. Everyone was relaxed. We had great sparring.

“He was making 168 pretty easy, but stepping up he’s able to eat whatever he wants. The weight is good. We think he’s going to be good and strong at 175. It’s a good move for him.

“He’s never had any problems with power, so I think the extra weight and energy should be good for him at light heavyweight.

“All this talk about Stevenson fighting (Sergey) Kovalev has motivated him pretty good. I think it gave him a pretty good picture of how the business of boxing works. He realizes that when the bell rings he needs to do something about it and he’s motivated by that.

“I can’t say if Stevenson is overlooking him because I’m not around him enough. But I know the fans and media want to make the Kovalev fight. It was good for Bika to hear that because it motivated him. He knows he has an opportunity to do something about it. On Saturday afternoon he can change all that.

“If Stevenson does what he says he’s going to do – meet him in the center of the ring and go toe-to-toe – this is going to be a tremendous fight.

“If he comes to the center of the ring and fights and goes toe-to-toe then this fight won’t go the distance. If Stevenson comes to trade I think he gets knocked out. If he runs around the ring and boxes then it could be a different outcome.”

ARTUR BETERBIEV:
“I don’t think this is a big challenge for me. I’m ready to face the world champions and raise the bar higher. This is just another opponent for me.

“This is another step that will move me closer to facing the champions at 175 pounds. I want to put on a solid fight and show that I’m one of the best fighters in this division.

“A knockout is never a goal for me. I’m trying to show my work and my dedication in the ring, but usually that’s what happens. Usually I finish with a knockout but that is not my main goal. My main goal is to box and show my skills.

“My motivation is to face the champions. That’s why I work so hard every day in the gym. I will get there soon.

“Why not face Kovalev? I’m ready. When I turned professional my goal was to meet the champions. He’s a champion now and I’d like to face the champions.”

GABRIEL CAMPILLO:
“We started training Jan. 1 and camp has been very good. We’ve been working very hard and I think I’m in great condition for this fight.

“Beterbiev may not have a lot of professional experience, but he’s had a very long amateur career. So we know that he’s ready and is a good opponent for us. We’ll see how he handles things once we get past the 5th, 6th and 7th rounds.

“To get ready for a hard-hitter like Beterbiev required lots of conditioning training. We worked the neck and the chin a lot. We think we’ve got a great chance in the second half of this fight though considering Beterbiev hasn’t really been tested like that.

“As for a prediction, I’m going to knock Beterbiev out in the seventh round.”

Campillo next for Beterbiev

QUEBEC CITY (March 19, 2015) – After dominating the amateur ranks during two entire Olympic cycles, Russian prospect Artur Beterbiev is now ready for pro boxing’s elite, even though he has only fought seven times as a professional. The Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) jewel will continue his journey April 4 in Quebec City, airing live on CBS and TVA Sports, against former world champion Gabriel Campillo, of Spain.
“The journalists won’t be happy since I did not KO anybody today,” laughed Beterbiev after a public training session today in Quebec City, He demonstrated his skills with his sparring partners, Englishman Bob Ajisafe and Australian Blake Caparello.

“I really think it will be a short night for Campillo,” Caparello said after sparring Beterbiev. “This guy has some incredible brute force. He could even chase and hunt down a strong Sergey Kovalev in the ring,”

Beterbiev (7-0, 7 KOa) will face former WBA light heavyweight world champion Campillo (25-6-1, 11 KOa), a slick 6’2” southpaw who has fought 211 rounds as a professional, in a preliminary bout before the WBC and The Ring light heavyweight world title fight between defending champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson and Sakio Bika.

Beterbiev-Campillo is for the IBF world second ranking in the light heavyweight division.

“It is a good fight against an excellent opponent; a resistant, experienced guy,” Beterbiev trainer Marc Ramsay analyzed. “Campillo will bring a lot of ring experience to Artur. My boxer continues to improve every day but, in fact, he is already ready for the best.”

“I will put on a good show and fight April 4th,” Beterbiev continued. “When I step in the ring, I don’t have a friend. I want to continue to get better until I face Sergey Kovalev again. And I will beat him again!”

Kevin Bizier vs. Stanislav Salmon

Canadian welterweight Kevin Bizier (23-2, 16 KOs) will have his chance to write history in the old Québec Coliseum, since he will fight the last boxing bout ever produced in the former Nordiques arena. April 4th, he will face former French and WBC Mediterranean welterweight champion Stanislav Salmon (24-3-2, 10 KOs).

In order to realize that dream, the Quebec City’s pride had to refuse an offer to appear in the semi-final bout of the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Andrzej Fonfara fight, April 18th in Carson, California.

“Kevin would have received a bigger purse than the one he had for his last fight against Jo Jo Dan, but he wanted to stay on the Quebec card,” promoter Yvon Michel added. “He did a great job in a really close brawl against Dan and Dan will fight in an IBF world welterweight fight, March 28 in England. Everything is still possible for Kevin and we believe in him.”

“To be the one that will close the Colisée is really something,” Bizier commented. “It is also a good preparation fight and I must do great. I would have liked to fight in California, but I will have another opportunity in June. And of course, I would have loved to be in Jo Jo Dan’s shoes to fight in a world championship…but one day, it will be my turn.”

Sébastien Bouchard vs. Denis Farias

Also on the card, Canadian fovorie Sébastien Bouchard (9-1, 3 KOs) will step up to face French tough guy Denis Farias (19-6-2, 1 KOs).

“Sébastien made us proud in his last fight when he stopped the last boxer to defeat icon Stéphane Ouellet, Belgian Cedric Spera,” GYM vice-president Bernard Barré mentioned. “He will be facing a durable fighter, who has only lost one time by K.O.”

Tickets are on sale at the Pepsi Coliseum box office in Quebec, by calling (418) 691-7211 or 1 (800) 900-7469, online at www.billetech.com, at GYM (514) 383-0666 and Champion Boxing Club (514) 376-0980. Ticket prices range from $25 to $250 on the floor.

Campillo Looking for his Next ‘Dance’ Partner

Former world light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo (24-6-1, 11 KOs) is looking for his next dance partner.

Coming off a career-rejuvenating victory over formerly undefeated Thomas Williams Jr., on August 1, live on ESPN Friday Night Fights at the Little Creek Casino in Shelton, Washington, in which he stopped Williams in five rounds, “The Handsome Man,” Campillo next wants to “tango” with any other top light heavyweight in the world.

“Gabriel Campillo, with his upset elimination-bout victory over the undefeated Williams, not only gained the right to be number two in the IBF ratings, but is also number nine in the WBC ratings,” said his exclusive promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing. “He is back and looking forward to becoming world champion once again.”

Professional boxing has been a difficult dance for Campillo, who before suffering losses to two of the top light heavyweights in the world, Sergey Kovalev and Andrey Fonfara (a fight in which he was winning when stopped), the 35-year-old Campillo was outright robbed in high-profile fights against former or current champions Beibut Shumenov, Karo Murat and Tavoris Cloud.

“The headlines after the Cloud fight said it was a Texas robbery in the American Bank Center. He should be 27-3 with his only losses in the last seven years against Kovalev and Fonfara,” continued Lewkowicz. “His victory over Williams shows that working with his stablemate Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez and the team from Maravilla Box has him back to being one of the best in the world. He was not supposed to win that fight, according to the experts, but he used his southpaw stance to open up a cut and then worked on it until the fight had to be stopped. He showed a level of accuracy and skill only top fighters ever reach.”

Lewkowicz says he is currently looking for Campillo’s next opponent, one that will continue the fighter’s mission to reclaim his championship.

“Gabriel has told me he feels better than he has in years and is ready for anyone. I will be looking to put him in a fight that will show the world the great tango dancer from Spain, Gabriel “Chico Guapo” Campillo, still has plenty of moves left to show.”

Campillo defeats Williams on cuts

Williams_Campillo_Weigh In
Former world champion Gabriel Campillo resurrected his career with a stoppage win over previously undefeated Thomas Williams Jr. due to a cut after round five of theie 12-round Light Heavyweight bout at the Little Creek Resort in Shelton, Washington.

Williams was in control of the fight as he landed some solid body shots that he followed up by flurries to the head. Campillo had some decent moments and cut Williams with a jab in round four. Campillo also was bleeding from his nose. Willimas own corner actually called the doctor in to look at the eye and the fight was stopped.

Campillo is now 24-6-1 with 11 knockouts. Williams is now 17-1.

Former world title challenger Andre Direll scored a 5th round stoppage over Vladine Biosse in a scheduled 10-round Super Middleweight bout.

It took Dirrell a round to get things going and started landing hard shots with both hands. He had Biosse against the ropes absorbing punches in round’s three and four. Dirrell turned it up in round five as he hurt Biosse with an uppercut that sent Biosse across the ring. Dirrell jumped on Biosse and landed about 9 unanswered punches until the but was stopped at 2:40.

Dirrell, 172 lbs of Flint, MI was coming off an 18-month lay off and is now 22-1 with 15 knockouts. Biosse, 172 lbs of Providence, RI is now 15-5-2.

In a six round war, Immanuwel Aleem scored a 6th round stoppage over Juan Carlos Rojas in a Middleweight bout.

Early on it looked like it would be easy for Aleem as he buckled Rojas badly in the first from an overhand right. Rojas came back to grind out a rough fight as he stood on the inside and gave as good as he received. The two continued to trade punches which was much to the delight of the fans. Rojas was docked a point after round three for unsportsmanlike actions. The fight was nip and tuck with both guys landing heavy leather and the fight was in the balance until the final seconds when Aleem landed a booming right that stunned and bucked Rojas until the referee stopped the fight at 2:45 of the final round.

Aleem, 162.6 lbs is now 10-0 with six knockouts. Rojas, 162 lbs of Mexico is now 5-7-1.

Main Event:
Washington D.C.’s Williams — the son of former Heavyweight veteran Thomas Williams — is coming off a third-round TKO win over Enrique Ornelas on the April 24 edition of Friday Night Fights. Campillo, who hails from Spain and won the WBA Light Heavyweight title in 2009 before losing the belt in 2010, is looking to score another victory following a seventh-round TKO win over Ricky Pow in his last fight.

“I’ve seen Campillo fight in person,” Williams said. “I fought on the undercard when he fought Tarvoris Cloud. I sat and watched because it was a championship fight in my weight class, and I just wanted to look at him. He didn’t really impress me, he’s definitely beatable. He’s going to try to run around, but he won’t run around for that long. If you negate everything and cut the ring off, he won’t be able to move too much. I’m going to catch him – they can run, but they can’t hide. I’m going to catch up with him and when I do, I’m going to put the work in.”

Sampson Lewkowicz, Campillo’s advisor, said, “For Campillo, it’s the ‘last tango.’ He’s got to do his best and win, or it could be his last time in boxing….Campillo feels the same way and has said so, but he is confident that he can win this fight and then go on to win the world title.”

Co-Feature:
Friday’s 10-round co-feature will pit former Super Middleweight world title challenger and 2004 Olympian “The Matrix” Andre Dirrell (21-1, 14 KOs) of Flint, Michigan, fighting out of Boca Raton, Florida, against Providence Rhode Island’s Vladine “Mr. Providence” Biosse (15-4-2, 7 KOs). In his last outing, Dirrell won a 10-round unanimous decision over Michael Gbenga, while Biosse is looking to rebound from a 10-round unanimous decision loss to Callum Smith.

Fonfara stops Campillo in nine

Andrzej Fonfara scored a come from behind ninth round knockout over former Light Heavyweight champion Gabriwl Campillo in a scheduled twelve round bout at US Cellular Field in Chicago.

Campillo controlled most of the action as he landed some popping shots from distance that continuously snapped the head back of Fonfara. Both fighter’s made an impression on each other as Fonfara was cut around the left eye while Campillo’s right swelled rapidly.

Campillo was cruising along until he got drilled with hard right which buckled him just before the bell sounded to end round eight. Campillo gathered himself and was having success in round nine until he got caught with a hard right that set off a flurry that was unded with a right to the body that sent Campillo down for the ten count at 1:37 of round nine.

Fonfara, 173 lbs of Chicago via Poland is now 24-2 with 14 knockouts. Campillo of Spain is now 22-6-1.

Heavyweight Artur Szpilka scored his second knockout victory over Mike Mollo, this time in round five of a scheduled ten round Heavyweight bout.

Like the first battle that took place on February 1st, it was a bloody war with Szpilka landing some good shots over the first two rounds which included a hard left that rocked Mollo at the bell in round two. In round three, Mollo landed a crushing short left hook that sent Szpilka to the canvas.

That was reminiscent of their first bout when it seemed like Szpilka was on his way to a dominant win before being dropped in that fight as well.

Mollo was bloodied around the right eye in round four and then was hammered out with a punishing left that sent him flat on his back. He was able to get to his feet but the fight was stopped at 1:41 of round five.

Szpilka, 226 lbs of Warsaw, Poland is now 16-0 with 12 knockouts. Mollo, 233 lbs of Chicago is now 20-5-1.

Adrian Granados got off the floor twice to stop Marc Salser Jr. in round six of their eight round Jr. Welterweight bout.

Salser dropped Granados in round two with a hard right hand. He knocked Granados down with yet another right hand in round five. n round six, Granados turned the tide by dropping Salser with a body shot. Granados jumped on Salser and landed a barrage of punches in the corner and the fight was stopped as Salser was falling to the canvas for a second time.

Granados, 140 lbs of Chicago is now 10-1-2 with 6 knockouts. Salser, 138 lbs of Mansfield, OH is now 15-1.

Kovalev destroys Campillo in three

If you haven’t heard of Sergey Kovalev you’re not alone. Until tonight not many have. But after an emphatic stoppage win over a top 5 opponent in Gabriel Campillo (on network TV no less!), it’s safe to say we’ll all be seeing more of Kovalev in the near future. So impressive was his destruction of Campillo that he may have actually made it hard for himself to get a big fight any time soon.

Campillo was legitimately world class and only recently lost a highly debatable decision to light heavyweight champ Tarvoris Cloud. Kovalev apparently didn’t get the memo as he steamrolled right though Campillo without a second thought. From the onset, Kovalev threw as if Campillo was merely a heavy bag that needed a good working over. Campillo seemed at a loss and was unable to keep Kovalev’s bombs from getting through his guard. About 30 seconds into round 3 Kovalev’s punches finally showed an effect on Campillo, who became trapped along the ropes and went down on all fours amid a flurry of punches. After beating the count, Campillo was again subjected to a flurry of Kovalev’s punches and wisely took a knee to compose himself. It didn’t help. When he finally did rise, he tried to back away from the onrushing Kovalev and ended up eating a hard right hand going backwards that dumped him on the seat of his pants. Referee Michael Ortega had seen enough and called of the fight at 1 minute 30 seconds of round three. Make no mistake, Kovalev (now 20-0-1 17kos)can certainly crack. It remains to be seen how good he truly is, but the way in which he dismantled Campillo makes me think it’ll be fun to find out. Campillo (21-5-1 7kos) on the other hand, simply can’t catch a break. After dropping a number of close fights and now being destroyed by Kovalev, Campillo’s risk/reward factor is off the charts. And not in a good way. It’s hard to imagine any top fighter who would want to fight him so it could be a long road back to the top for Campillo.

If you blinked, you might have missed the NBC Sports Net co-main event between middleweights Elvin Ayala and Curtis Stevens. Less than a minute into the first round, Stevens landed a picture perfect counter left hook that dumped Ayala to the canvas. Although he beat the count, Ayala was on shaky legs when he was allowed to continue and Stevens immediently took advantage; unleashing a flurry of punches that was punctuated by a left hook that laid Ayala out cold. Stevens(now 23-3 17kos) looked impressive taking care of Ayala so quickly and his stock will surely rise based solely on the severity of the knockout. Ayala (now 26-6-1 12kos) had been on the receiving end of a number of brutal knockouts and should probably being to start thinking about calling it a career.

In the opening bout of the evening, heavyweights Jarrell Miller and Joey Dawejko batteled to a 4 round draw. The fight was completely one sided with Miller throwing more and landing the harder, cleaner shots throughout. The fight was ruled a draw solely on the two points referee Johnny Callas took from Miller in round 3. Miller had pushed Dawejko to the canvas numerous time throughout the preceding 2 rounds, but it was unclear why the points were deducted as Dawejko was on his feet both times the points were taken. Whatever the reason, the 2 points were the reason all three judges scored the bout 37-37. Miller now stands at 4-0-1 (4kos). Dawejko adds his second draw and is now 7-1-2 (3kos).

A six round super featherweight bout between Joseph “Chip” Perez and Jason Sosa ended early courtesy of a Sosa right hand in round 4. The fight started poorly for Perez, who suffered a flash knockdown on a right hand to the midsection late in round 1. The knockdown happened as Perez was moving backward and though it did no damage, it did serve to animate Perez who fought back hard in rounds 2 and 3 to try and make up for the lost point. Sosa made the rounds close though by matching Perez punch for punch. Amid a heated exchange in the 4th, Sosa turned the fight with a lead right hand that caught Perez flush on the chin. Perez beat the count but was declared unfit to continue by referee Johnny Callas, who called the fight at 2 minutes 10 seconds. With the win, Sosa improved to 8-1-3 (4kos) while Perez dropped to 10-2 (3kos).

Super Middleweight Marcus Upshaw overcame some early troubles to knockdown and eventually knock out Vladine Biosse. Upshaw was being outworked over the first three rounds but started to pick up the pace in round 4. He began to land his right hand with regularity and in round 5, was able to floor Biosse with it after setting it up with a well timed jab. Biosse beat the count and was able to recover enough to make rounds 6 and 7 competitive. Upshaw was able to stop the momentum Biosse was building in round 8 when he again landed a perfect 1-2 that dropped Biosse to the canvas. Biosse rose but absorbed enough punishment over the course of 20 seconds to cause referee Tony Chiarantano to stop the fight. Upshaw runs his record to 15-8-1 (6kos) while Biosse slips to 14-2-1 (7kos). Time of the stoppage was 2:25 of round 8.

Lightweight Edwin Cotto (1-0 1Ko) made a successful pro debut by stopping Ian James (2-5-1 1Ko) within the scheduled 4 round distance. Cotto was never in any trouble and landed almost everything he threw. He dropped James in rounds 2 and 3 and ultimately stopped him in round 4; knocking him backward into referee Michael Ortega who wisely stopped the fight. Time of the stoppage was 18 seconds.

Welterweight Jimmy Williams got a little help from Curtis Stevens, whose 1st round KO of Elvin Ayala allowed his pro debut to be broadcast to millions on network TV. Williams didn’t shrink from the moment and batter his opponent, Noel Garcia, before stopping him impressively. Williams scored a knockdown in round 3 via a left hook, right hand, left hook combo. Garcia beat the count and survived the round, but probably wishes he hadn’t. In round 4 Williams landed a crushing right uppercut, left hook combo that knocked Garcia cold. It was about as good a way to make a pro debut as one could imagine. Williams is now 1-0 1Ko while Garcia drops to 2-16-2 1Ko. Time of the stoppage was 39 seconds of round 4.

FIGHT NIGHT FUTURE STARS

Rising four- and six-round fighters will get their chance to shine when NBC Sports Group and Main Events present Fight Night Future Stars, a one-hour program that will highlight the performances of developing undercard fighters on the regular NBC Sports Network Fight Night presentations.

“Boxing fans will now get the chance to see up-and-coming talent through our Fight Night Future Stars telecasts,” said Jon Miller, President Programming, NBC Sports and NBC Sports Network. “Up until now, the only way to watch the development ofthis kind of talent was to attend the live fights. Now, the most promising young performers will get the chance to showcase their talents to a national audience.”

The first Fight Night Future Stars telecast will feature taped performances from the upcoming Saturday, January 19th NBC Sports Network Fight Night card, which will take place at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. The action will be called by Fight Night talent, Kenny Rice and B.J. Flores.

“Fight Night has provided a launching pad for many of the young men who appeared on our programs in 2012,” said promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events. “Gabriel Rosado and Zab Judah enhanced their careers through the Fight Night series on NBC Sports Network and are now scheduled for world title bouts in the first quarter of 2013. The addition of Future Stars will simply create more opportunities for the many talented fighters who have yet to gain national television exposure.”

Telecast dates and times for the Fight Night Future Stars series will be forthcoming.

About Fight Night: NBC Sports Network’s Fight Night series is collaboration between NBC Sports Group, Main Events and Hall of Fame matchmaker J Russell Peltz. GABRIEL CAMPILLO READY FOR RING RETURN AGAINST SERGEY “KRUSHER” KOVALEV

Former WBA light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo, 21-4-1, 7 KOs, is ready for his return to the ring after a layoff of almost one year. He fights undefeated power puncher Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev, 18-0-1, 15 KOs, in an anticipated 10-rounder at the Mohegan Sun Casino on Saturday, January 19th. The fight is the feature bout in the season opener of NBC Sports Network’s popular FIGHT NIGHT boxing series. The telecast will begin at 9PM ET with the Elvin Ayala vs. Curtis Stevens co-feature.

The last time Campillo fought, February 18, 2012, he thought that he had once again become a world champion. However, after 12 rounds with IBF champ Tavoris Cloud, Campillo found himself on the short end of a controversial split decision. Cloud retained his title and sent Campillo back to the drawing board. However, the fans remained on Campillo’s side.

“Ever since February 12th, I hear a couple of times each day from the people that I deserved that decision,” Campillo said.

A win against the rapidly rising Kovalev might be exactly what Campillo needs to receive another crack at the championship, against Cloud or anyone else holding a belt.

“I want to fight every big name in the division until I am considered the number one boxer in the 175-pound weight class,” Campillo said.

The first step is beating “Krusher” Kovalev.

“He’s a dangerous boxer with a very good right cross,” Campillo said. “But he has never fought a world class boxer like me. I am great at bobbing and weaving and counter punching. If we go to the scorecards, I have no doubt I’ll win by a huge margin. But just maybe one of my counter punches will end the fight.”

The pair was originally scheduled to face off in September, but a Campillo back injury forced a postponement of the fight.

“My back is completely recovered,” Campillo said. “Even though I only fought one time last year, I kept training and had sparring sessions throughout the whole year. So I am in great shape.”

The fight in Uncasville, CT, will only be the third time Campillo has boxed in the United States, but he welcomes his return to the USA.

“I love fighting in America,” Campillo said. “The people always treat me like I am American. I love that. Boxing in Spain doesn’t have the same prestige that it does in the States. Here every sportsman is respected.”

Perhaps that lack of prestige is due to the fact that boxing champions from Spain are a fairly rare breed. Campillo is one them, but feels he needs more victories and more titles before he’s considered the best ever to come from his country.

“I think Javier Castillejo has won more titles than me, but I can beat him yet,” Campillo joked.

Video: Introducing Sergey Kovalev

Kovalev and Campillo Headline NBC Sports Network “Fight Night ” January 19th at Mohegan Sun Arena

TOTOWA, NJ – November 14, 2012 – NBC Sports Network’s popular “Fight Night” TV boxing series starts 2013 off with a bang on January 19th when Sergey Kovalev, 19-0-1, 17 KOs, takes on Gabriel Campillo, 21-4-1, 8 KOs, in an international 10-round light heavyweight main event. The nationally televised fight will be held at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT. The NBC Sports Network telecast will begin at 9PM ET.

Kovalev, the 175-pound punching machine from Chelyabinsk, Russia, aptly nicknamed “Krusher”, always brings the power when he steps into the ring. Only three of his opponents have gone the distance during his three year career. His last start was a typical Kovalev affair, a three round blowout of Lionell Thompson in Bethlehem, PA. He will look to make similar short work of Campillo in January.

Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev

Campillo is Spanish southpaw from Madrid who once reigned as the WBA 175-pound world champion. In his last fight, he boxed circles around undefeated IBF champ Tavoris Cloud, but lost a highly controversial split decision. Campillo, known as the “Handsome Man” is a beautiful boxer looking to get back to another world title bout. Kovalev is standing in his way.

Gabriel “Chico Guapo” Campillo

This caliber of competition has become the benchmark for the NBC Sports Network “Fight Night” series. “Fight Night” matchmaker, J Russell Peltz said, “This is a classic boxer-puncher fight between world-class fighters. On paper it doesn’t get any better than this, in person it could be even better.”

Tickets go on sale to the public Saturday, November 17 at 10AM ET. They are priced at $125 and $40 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster 1-800-745-3000. Ticketmaster Link to January 19 NBCSN Fight Night at Mohegan Sun. For ADA accessible sales, call Mohegan Sun Box Office 1-800-862-8499.

SERGEY KOVALEV LOOKING TO MAKE HIS MARK AGAINST CAMPILLO

NEWARK, NJ – Unbeaten Russian-born boxer Sergey Kovalev, 18-0-1, 16 KOs, gets his chance to break out of the light heavyweight pack when he meets Gabriel Campillo, 21-4-1, 8 KOs, in a nationally televised 10-round main event at the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem, PA on September 21, 2012. Kovalev’s fight will be aired as part of the NBC Sports Network Fight Night series, broadcast will begin at 9PM ET. The opportunity is ripe for Kovalev to make his move and impress the boxing world against Campillo, who lost a recent title challenge to IBF champion Tavoris Cloud by a whisker.

With boxing fans still shaking their heads about the controversial decision awarded to Cloud that night, Gabriel Campillo should have much support from rowdy ringsiders and TV viewers alike. So Sergey Kovalev has the chance to surprise everyone, including his seasoned foe. The best part is that the unbeaten Russian, now fighting out of Fort Lauderdale, FL, just may have the chops, and the punch, to do it.

In Kovalev’s most recent start, June 1, he scored a quick TKO victory over journeyman Darnell Boone in the same Bethlehem boxing ring. Kovalev smoked Boone halfway through the second round, marking his sixth stoppage in his last seven fights. “KO Kovalev” will look to shock Campillo in similar fashion.

However, Campillo may just be the Russian’s stiffest test thus far. Besides being a southpaw, and making such a splash against Cloud, Campillo, of Madrid, Spain, has travelled the world and faced a variety of competition. He briefly held the WBA World Light Heavyweight Title, as well as a collection of European and Spanish crowns. “The Handsome Man” is not a big puncher but his boxing skills are solid and should pose a serious challenge for Kovalev.

The fight is a classic boxer vs. puncher matchup that should excite the fans and live up to the strong standard of the NBC Sports Network Fight Night series. Kovalev-Campillo tops an exciting bill of bouts that include two 12-rounders, Gabriel Rosado vs. Charles Whittaker in an IBF Jr. Middleweight Title Eliminator, and Bethlehem’s Ronald Cruz vs. Antwone Smith for the WBC Continental Americas Welterweight Title. All three fights are scheduled to be televised live on a three-hour NBC Sports Network broadcast.

ABOUT SEPTEMBER 21

The Campillo-Kovalev and Cruz-Smith fights top a seven-bout card at the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem. First fight is 7.15 pm. Tickets priced at $130 (luxury suites), $80 and $55 can be purchased through the offices of Peltz Boxing (215-765-0922), all Ticketmaster outlets (800-745-3000) or at the box office at the Sands Event Center (610-297-7414). In Bethlehem, tickets are available at Deja Brew, Inc., 101 West 4th Street (610-865-2739) and at Pronto Insurance Notary, 232 East 3rd Street (610-419-6790). NBC Sports Network will televise the Campillo-Kovalev and Cruz-Smith fights, beginning at 9 pm. The card is being promoted by Main Events and Peltz Boxing Promotions, Inc., in association with Sampson Boxing and the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem.

CAMPILLO AND KOVALEV HEADLINE SEPT 21st NBC SPORTS NETWORK “FIGHT NIGHT”

Totowa, NJ – July 13, 2012 –

Gabriel “Chico Guapo” Campillo, 21-4-1, 8 KO’s, the #3 light heavyweight in the world, will take on Russia’s tough Sergey Kovalev, 18-0-1, 16 KO’s, rated #13, on Friday, September 21st when the critically acclaimed NBC Sports Network Fight Night Boxing Series returns to the Events Center at the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The 2,000 seat arena was sold out with standing room only for the June 1st NBCSN Fight Night show at the Sands.

The show, which is slated to begin at 9 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network, will be a co-promotion among Peltz Boxing, Sampson Boxing and Main Events.

Managed by World Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez, Campillo of Madrid was last seen in February losing a razor-close highly controversial split decision to IBF Champion Tavoris Cloud in Texas. In 2010 Campillo, (21-4-1, 8 KO’s) lost another disputed decision to current IBF Light Heavyweight title holder Beibut Shumenov in Las Vegas. Last year he drew with Karo Murat in a title eliminator in Murat’s adopted home of Germany.

“Campillo has arguably beaten two world champions and the number one contender without receiving the decisions,” said promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events. “After he stopped Darnell Boone on NBCSN in June, Kovalev stated that he is ready to fight for the world title. On September 21st he will get the opportunity to prove to the world that he is worthy in a very tough fight. A win for Campillo would put him right back into the title picture.”

Campillo’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz said, “Campillo is very happy about this fight. This is well deserved. He got robbed in his last 3 – 4 fights, including Vegas, Germany and Texas.” Lewkowicz added, “Campillo will spend the next two months training very hard with manager Sergio Martinez and trainer Pablo Sarmiento. He is a very tough fighter. This will be a great fight and I guarantee that no one in that arena will know who the winner will be until the end.”

In the twelve round defense of his WBC Continental Americas Welterweight belt, popular welterweight Ronald Cruz of Bethlehem, 17-0, 12 KO’s, will make his second “Fight Night” appearance when he faces Antwone Smith, 21-4-1, 12 KO’s, in a classic crossroads match-up. Cruz won his belt on the NBCSN Fight Night show on June 1st with a unanimous 12-round decision over Prenice Brewer, of Cleveland, OH. Smith is a walk-in styled fighter like Cruz and this fight promises to be a boxing fan’s contest. Cruz is currently ranked No. 12 IBF and No. 15 WBC as a welterweight.

The ticket prices and undercard will be announced shortly.

Campillo appeal denied by IBF

Gabriel Campillo’s request for an immediate rematch stemming from his controversial split decision defeat to IBF Light Heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud on February 18th has been denied according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“The judging of professional boxing events is subjective,” IBF President Darryl Peoples wrote in an email to Campillo’s attorney Leon Margules. “While you have presented many media accounts disputing the scoring of the fight, these criticisms do not represent the opinions of professional boxing judges. Absent any proof of wrongdoing, we must rely on the decisions rendered by the judges whether their decisions are popular or not.

“Any action taken by the IBF in this situation without proof of wrongdoing or violation of IBF rules would serve to invalidate the decision of the judges. You pointed out in your letter dated February 27, 2011, ‘While we do not believe that a judges’ scoring should normally be questioned,’ the IBF agrees with your position. Based on the foregoing, the IBF will not grant an immediate rematch.”

“I just think if they have this discretionary rule then this is the type of thing they should use it for, where the fighter was wronged and there is no specific grounds under their appeal rules to allow us to appeal anything that happened that night,” Margules told ESPN.com. “This is when they should use the discretionary rule — to right the wrong. But they decided not to.”

Paul Williams to take on Ishida; Cloud – Campillo on February 18th on SHOWTIME

Former Welterweight world champion Paul Williams will be back in action on February 18th when he takes on Nobohiro Ishida on February 18th as part of a Showtime televised card that will also feature IBF Light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud defending against Gabriel Campillo according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“Paul is anxious to get back in there and re-establish himself in the minds of people who don’t give him credit for winning the fight with Lara,” said Williams promoter Dan Goossen. “People will forget real quickly with a good performance against Ishida. Whether you had Paul winning or losing (against Lara) it was an exciting fight and that’s what Paul Williams is known for — being in those types of fights. He gives as good as he gets most of the time, so I think this should be another one of those good Paul Williams fights.

“I believe Kirkland’s performance against Angulo was a factor that showed that Ishida deserved the shot with Williams in another big fight,” Goossen said. “To me, Ishida has earned his opportunity to fight a fighter like Paul Williams and Paul has earned the right to fight the man who knocked out James Kirkland. This is a fight that will be a barometer to see where Paul is. I believe he is still at the top of the class in the 154-pound division. Ishida is somebody you have to contend with to get back to that top level.”

“One of the things I love about it is that he is right-handed,” Goossen said.

If Williams is successful against Ishida, Goossen said the hope is that Williams will get a rubber match with Martinez and a rematch with Lara.

“That’s a fight we would like to get back,” Goossen said of another fight with Martinez. “They’re 1-1. Paul wants to do it again with Lara, too, even though he got the victory because Paul is the kind of fighter who wants to erase any doubts.”

“When Campillo got call to fight on Dec. 31 he took the fight immediately,” said Sampson Lewkowicz, Campillo’s promoter. “When they canceled the fight I kept Campillo in training. Now we are getting the fight on Feb. 18. We have agreed on everything. I spoke with Don King (Cloud’s promoter) and I am waiting for the paperwork.”
