On his upcoming fight with Richard Medina:

“Medina is a fighter, like me, with only one loss. He’s coming into this fight with something to prove. Fortunately, this fight was presented so I took it immediately because I know I’m in great shape.”

On his upcoming fight with George Acosta:

“I’ve seen a lot of his fights, and he does many things well. He’s long with a good reach and he’s always in tip top shape, but I see some aspects of his game that I know I can take advantage of. We have a great game plan set, and if need be, we have plan B and C. It’s going to be a great fight for the fans.”

On making his FOX Deportes television debut:

“I’m very excited to be fighting on FOX Deportes, since all my family and friends back home in San Antonio will not be able to make it. They will all be tuning in from home, so I’m happy about that. Putting on exciting fights is what the fans want to see, so that is what I’m going to do, put on a great show so everyone watching can remember my name.”

On what a win will do for his career:

“I believe if I win this fight, I’ll have a great opportunity to get right back in a big fight, most likely a ten rounder, against a top contender. Winning this fight, against a guy like Acost with a great record, will definitely help my career. It will show that I belong at the top level.”

GEORGE “EL YUYU” ACOSTA Training Camp Quotes

ONTARIO, CA (February 8, 2023) – Thompson Boxing’s super featherweight prospect, George “El Yuyu” Acosta (13-1, 1 KO), of Whittier, Ca, will look to start his 2023 off with a bang against Marlin Sims (8-1, 4 KOs) of Minneapolis, MN, in an 8-round main event bout headlining Thompson Boxing’s “New Blood” card. Acosta is eager to get back in the ring and campaign for a regional belt.

“New Blood” will take place at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, CA on Friday, February 10, 2023. Doors open at 6:30 pm PT with the first fight starting at 8:00 pm PT. Tickets priced $50, $75, $100, and $125 and are available for purchase by calling 714-935-0900 or online at www.thompsonboxing.com. Fight fans will be able to watch all Thompson Boxing fights, weigh-ins, and behind-the-scenes content, via their new mobile app downloadable on Apple and Google

Here is what Acosta had to say about his recent camp, his matchup with Sims, his goals for 2023, and more.

On his recent training camp:

“I’ve had a long training camp because we were scheduled to fight last year, but something happened, and the fight fell through. It’s fair to say I’m in the best shape of my career because I’ve been grinding in the gym for months now. I am following a strict diet, training hard and focused on adapting and growing as a fighter. This is as close to a perfect camp as I have had in my entire career. I learned a lot during this camp and I’m going to display all my tricks on fight night.”

On his matchup with Marlon Sims:

“I am excited. I won’t lie, I felt some type of way when he was unable to fight me in 2022, and it cost me a fight. So, I am eager to hand him a L for the time I lost. You can make more money, but you can’t get back time. I know he’s coming as well, so fans are going to see a great fight. I just feel I have more in my arsenal then him.”

On what a win will do for his career:

“I want to be the next marquee guy at Thompson Boxing. I am hoping to headline shows three-to-four times a year, be a company guy, someone they can trust to put on good events and strong performances. A win here continues my upward trajectory as being one of the featured fighters that Thompson Boxing pushes to the top of the sport. So, a win here is one step closer to my dream of becoming a world champion.”

On fighting in the main event on Thompson Card:

“I have been the main event a few times, but now to say and believe that I might be a main event fighter for a good portion of my immediate future is a level up in my career. Despite having a loss on my record, I have rebuilt from the ashes only to become stronger. Main event Thompson Boxing cards provide justification for why I am still working so hard day-in, and day-out, to try to be great in this sport.”

Here is what Sims had to say about his recent camp, his matchup with Acosta, fighting in California for the first time, and more.

On his recent training camp:

“Training camp has been really good. I am not really trying to talk all that much. I lead by example and am a man of action. It is clock-in, and clock-out. This is a blue-collar training camp for a blue-collar guy. I am not going to ‘wow’ anyone with words, but I will with my fists in the ring on fight night.

On his matchup with George Acosta:

“He is solid. He is confident. He believes in himself, but that is all fine and good. He should. I know what I am, and I know what I am capable of. Let’s be honest, he can’t crack at all with only one knockout, and he was hurt in one of his recent fights. He must fight a smart fight, because I have 50% KO ratio, and my only loss is to a top fighter in Dominique Crowder. George Acosta is good, but I’m better.”

On what a win will do for his career:

“I win I become one of these guys who people take notice of. I have fought a lot of people off television and stuff, and a win over a known fighter on an accessible streaming platform like Thompson Boxing is huge. This is a what have you done for me lately sport, and I want to put my best foot forward and set myself up for bigger fights with a victory.”

On fighting in California for the first time in the main event on Thompson Card:

“Huge. This is the biggest moment of my career, to date. I’ll be making my California debut and I plan on bringing home the win in Acosta’s hometown. Thompson Boxing has treated me with respect and has been fair. I am excited to show my skills to everyone watching on all of Thompson Boxing’s platforms. It’s great that all my people back home will be able to watch.”

Beto Duran will operate as the blow-by-blow commentator with expert commentary by Doug Fischer. Cynthia Conte will serve as the onsite ringside reporter.

Oliva vs. Boudreaux will take place on Thompson Boxing’s New Blood card.

Here is what Oliva had to say about his recent training camp, his matchup with Boudreaux, making his 2023 debut, and more.

On his recent training camp:

“I love the grind. I work hard all-day, and I train harder at night. This camp has been about staying focused on my goal and appreciating the journey through the ranks of the sport. One day I will look back and say ‘man, these were the days’. I live for moments like this and I’m thankful to my team for always having my back. It’s been a nice camp and my trainer Henry Ramierz has me in great shape with good plan in place.”

On his matchup with Wayne Boudreaux:

“He is a good fighter, a good amateur, but he got stopped in Olympic Trials to a good puncher and I know I am a good puncher as well. I think he is talented, but he is also flawed. I don’t have the pedigree, but I believe I have more desire, will, and focus. I want this more than him, and I believe when I hit him, he will slowly stop fighting back.”

On what a win will do for his career:

“The goal is to get into bigger and better fights. Not many fighters would take this fight at this point in their career, but I want to be great. The goal is to improve, constantly get better, and take on opponents who are no worse than my last opponent.”

On fighting on Thompson Card:

“I love it. Thompson has been the best part for my career. Honestly, I hope to fight my whole career with them. I see myself as a blue-collar fighter with a great promotional company that will take me to the highest level of the sport. It is great to fight in Southern California, and even better doing so with Thompson Boxing, how has been keeping me busy.”

GEORGE ACOSTA TRAINING CAMP NOTES

ONTARIO, CA (October 17, 2022) – Super featherweight George “El Yuyu” Acosta (13-1, 1 KOs) of Whittier, Ca, will take on one of the toughest tests of his career when he steps in the ring against Jose Angulo (14-3, 7 KOs) of Guayaquil, Ecuador. The two will clash in an 8-round main event on Thompson Boxing’s “New Blood” card.

“New Blood” will take place at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, CA on Friday, October 21, 2022. Doors open at 6:30 pm PT with the first fight starting at 8:00 pm PT. Fight fans will be able to watch all Thompson Boxing fights, weigh-ins, and behind-the-scenes content, via their new mobile app downloadable on Apple and Google.

Here is what Acosta had to say about his recent training camp, his upcoming match with Angulo, and more.

On his recent training camp:

“I’m having a tremendous training camp. The big thing since COVID-19 has been focusing on getting my weight to the perfect balance of maintaining strength while not depleting my energy or power. I feel that I’m becoming a high-level fighter, in addition I’m fighting at the most ideal weight class for myself as well, which this fight will show.”

On his matchup with Angulo:

“Angulo is a tricky fighter. His three losses are against a couple of guys who are undefeated and another with one loss. Regardless, this is the biggest fight of his life – so I am preparing for the best version of Jose Angulo.  Angulo is a very dangerous opponent and I’m taking this fight very seriously as I know he’s coming with everything he’s got.”

On fighting in Southern California in Thompson’s main event:

Fighting at home is great. From my family to people who come from the gym to support me, will all be here to watch me fight. Boxing is such a lonely sport, so anything that breaks up the mental grind and isolation is always such a welcomed sight. My goal is to be great, and in the process of achieving that I miss out on a lot of other things people get to do in their life. Fighting for people who care, motivates me. In addition, fighting in the main event for Thompson Boxing is a tremendous blessing, as I know this fight will be available to watch on every device, phone, tablet, smart TV, and computer.

On what a win does from his career:

“I am currently ranked #15 on BoxRec in the U.S., and I am hoping after this fight against a good opponent, I will move into the top-fifteen in one of the sanctioning organizations. I want to target the best possible opponents available, while listening to Thompson Boxing’s advice, as they have put me in a great position. I know many of the world titles are vacant right now, so I want to fight good opponents to get myself in the mix to fight champions.”

George “El YuYu” Acosta Training Camp Quotes

LOS ANGELES, CA (June 15, 2022) – Lightweight prospect, George “El YuYu” Acosta (12-1, 1 KO), of Whittier, California, is in one of the toughest fights of his career as he faces, Marlin “So Icey” Sims (8-1, 4 KOs), of Minneapolis, Minnesota, this Friday, June 17th, on the “Path To Glory” card at the DoubleTree Hotel in Ontario, California, promoted by Thompson Boxing Promotions. Acosta vs. Sims, an eight-round bout, will serve as the co-main event to Saul Sanchez vs. Eros Correa, a ten-round bantamweight clash.

Tickets are priced at $50$75, & $100, and are available for purchase by calling 714-935-0900, or online at ThompsonBoxing.com. Fight fans will be able to watch all Thompson Boxing fights, weigh-ins, and behind-the-scenes content, via their new Mobile App downloadable on Apple and Google.

Here is what Acosta had to say about his upcoming fight with Sims, his recent training camp, and more.

On his recent training camp:

“It was a really hard training camp, in which I trained two-to-three times a-day, invested in myself, like all high-level fighters have to do. Everyone on my team molded together to make this the best camp of my career. I know an impressive win on Friday night could lead to big things. That is what I want, so I went all in on this camp.”

On his upcoming fight with Sims:

“I am excited to prove myself on this level. I have worked hard on my diet, strength program, developing a social media following with my YouTube channel, and now I feel whole, as a person and a fighter. It comes down to performing on this night, and I know that Marlin Sims will see the best version of me on night night, as will the fans. I’m expecting him to be in the best shape of his life, which is going to make for a great fight. He does a lot of good things in the ring, but I feel my ring IQ and determination will get me the victory.”

On what a win will do for his career:

“I lost a lot of momentum when I lost to Ruben Torres. Torres is being thrown around as a prospect of the year contender, and I felt that was a close fight, but people didn’t pay attention to my career the same way after I lost. This is my chance to prove the doubters wrong, and show just how good I am. I want to break onto the scene at the world-class level. I want to be respected in this division, and a convincing will help.”

On fighting in So-Cal on another Thompson Boxing Promotions card:

“Thompson Boxing Promotions has built my career the right way. I won’t lie, it hasn’t always been easy, but I know I am a much better fighter than most fighters with my record. I know where I stand in the division and what I need to do. Part of what I need to do is get the L.A. fight fans behind me, as they have supported me thus far, and I look to travel someday soon when the right fight happens. I have all the support of Southern California behind me, and I’m expecting a lot of fans to be at my fight this Friday.”

Thompson Boxing Promotions 3.2.1. Boxing event will steam live for free on Thompson Boxing Promotions website (www.thompsonboxing.com), as well as their Facebook and YouTube pages, showcasing three action-packed bouts on Sunday, September 6, 2020.

3.2.1. Boxing will take place at the Omega Products International
Event Center in Corona, CA, and will start at 4:00 p.m. PT / 7:00 p.m. ET. 3.2.1 Boxing is a non-audience show. The card is headlined by a clash of undefeated welterweight boxers as Luis Lopez (8-0-1, 4 KOs), of Corona, Ca, battles Bustos (12-0-1, 7KOs), of El Monte, CA, in an eight-round bout.

Here is what Carlos Velasquez, who is hosting training camp in Phoenix, AZ, had to say about his recent training camp, his matchup with Acosta, and more.

On facing George Acosta on late notice.

“Although this fight was presented to me on late notice, I’ll be ready to go since I’ve been training for the last few months. I’m hungry to make a name for myself and a win against a fighter like Acosta, who has ten pro fights, will help me get some recognition. To be great one must take chances. I’ve never turned down and opponent and when this fight was finalized, I was extremely happy.”

On his matchup with George Acosta.

“Acosta has more experience then me, but he’s already tasted defeat. I plan on doing what I do best when I step in the ring with him, and that’s to dictate the action from the opening bell. I’m taking this fight seriously and I’m expecting to go to war with Acosta.”

On his recent training camp.

“I’m usually training in Indio, California, with my head coach Joel Diaz, but since the pandemic hit, I’ve been training with my dad Domingo in my hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. I’m talking to Joel daily about our game plan, and what we need to be working on. I’m focusing on using more movement, as well as my strength and conditioning. I’m in tremendous physical and mental shape right now. All the sacrifices have been made and I’ll be fighting at a high level on September sixth.”

On fighting in the co-main event on 3.2.1. Boxing.

“This will be the second time I’ll be fighting on a Thompson Boxing card, but a first to be showcased in a co-main event bout. I can’t express how grateful I am for the opportunity given to me from Thompson Boxing. I want to show my gratitude by putting on a great show. 3.2.1. will be free for the world to see so I’m happy that my family and friends will be able to tune in.”

George “El Yuyu” Acosta 3.2.1. Boxing Training Camp Notes

ORANGE, Calif. (August 31, 2020) – Lightweight prospect, George Acosta (9-1, 1 KO) will face late replacement Carlos Velasquez (3-0, 2 KOs) on Thompson Boxing Promotions 3.2.1. Boxing event taking place at the Omega Products International Event Center in Corona, CA, on Sunday, September 6th, 2020.

3.2.1. Boxing will steam live for free on Thompson Boxing Promotions website (www.thompsonboxing.com), as well as their Facebook and YouTube pages, showcasing three action-packed bouts, starting at 4:00 p.m. PT / 7:00 p.m. ET. The 8-round main event is headlined by a clash of undefeated welterweight boxers as Luis Lopez (8-0-1, 4 KOs), of Corona, Ca, battles Saul Bustos (12-0-1, 7KOs), of El Monte, CA.

Here is what George Acosta, who is hosting training camp in Maywood, CA, with coach Jeff Slotree, had to say about his recent training camp, his matchup with Velasquez, and more.

On facing late replacement Carlos Velasquez.

“I was scheduled to fight Teodoro Alonso in a rematch, but that fight fell through so now my focus is on Carlos Velasquez, who is almost the same exact height. Velasquez is undefeated so I know he will be determined to keep his unbeaten record intact. The same game plan will be in place, nothing really changes as far as that goes. We got a lot of good sparring against tall fighters.

Returning to the ring after COVID-19

“It feels great to be back in the ring. The L.A.-area was shut down for quite some time, and it took what felt like forever to get back in the gym. I did my best to stay in shape by doing a lot of road work. For the last month we went hard as the gyms opened back up.

On this training camp with coach Jeff Slotree.

“This training camp has been difficult based on just what is going on, but coach Slotree had me working on a lot of foot work drills. I’m starting to sit on my punches better and I’m hoping it helps with my power. I’m in great shape and very focused. I want to look good in this bout.”

On fighting for Thompson’s 3.2.1. Boxing card.

“This card is a big deal, they just put on a PPV that a lot of people watched, and now I want to continue the momentum for this company by putting on a good show for the fans. This show will be streamed for free so I’m excited that all my family and friends will be able to watch since they can’t be their live. I’m grateful for the opportunities that Thompson Boxing continues to give me.”
