Sheeraz Stops Berlanga in 5

Hamzah Sheeraz emphatically stopped Edgar Berlanga in round four of their 12-round super middleweight bout at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Flushing, Queens, New York

In round four, Sheeraz dropped Berlanga with a hard three punch combination that punctuated by a left to the head. Seconds later, it was two vicious head shots that put Berlanga on his back. Seconds into round five, Sheeraz landed a couple more hard shots to the head the doubled over Berlanga and the fight was stopped at 17 seconds.

Sheeraz, 167.8 lbs of Ilford Essex, ENG is 22-0-1 with 18 knockouts. Berlanga, 167.6 lbs of Lithia, FL via Brooklyn is 23-2.

“Whoever was in the ring with me tonight, there was no stopping me,” Sheeraz said at the end of the night. “After my last fight (against Carlos Adames), the amount of abuse I got on social media and in person—I understand it’s part of boxing—but it made me a hungrier fighter.”

Sheeraz worked with a new trainer for this bout, former middleweight champion Andy Lee, who he credited with aiding him in tonight’s win. “A massive thank you to Andy Lee, a man who put his faith and trust in me. In the first few rounds, I was losing them. I told him I can hunt this guy down and he believed me. Not many coaches do that, so Andy, thank you very much.”

“Canelo has always been a boxing hero of mine, so even for my name to be mentioned in the same sentence as his is a great achievement in and of itself,” said Sheeraz. “If I do get the opportunity to fight him, it won’t be one of those where I try to nick him on points. I will stand in the middle with him and have it out. Whoever lands first, I suppose, will knock out the other.”

Stevenson Decisions Zepeda to Retain Lightweight Title

Shakur Stevenson retained the WBC Lightweight title as he pounded out a 12-round unanimous decision over William Zepeda.

Zepeda made Stevenson show a different side of him as he was able to stand toe-to-toe with Zepeda. Zepeda pushed the action and at times backed Stevenson to the ropes. But Stevenson countered beautifully off the ropes. Zepeda landed punches, but Stevenson was able to land punch for punch and was alot more economical and precise with his punches.

Stevenson, 135 lbs of Newark, NJ won by scores of 119-109 and 118-110 twice and is now 24-0. Zepeda, 134.8 lbs of San Mateo, MEX is 33-1.

“It wasn’t the performance I was looking for, because I was trying to prove a point. I was trying to fight, so I took more punishment than usual. At the end of the day, I do whatever it takes to get the job done,” Stevenson remarked following the bout. “I’ve got that dog in me. I’m not no puppy. I’m not a poodle. I’m a tough guy. I’ve got dog in me.” (See video HERE)

“That was one of the toughest fighters at 135 lbs. I want a lot of people to get in the ring with him and see how tough he is. He pushed me to another level,” Stevenson said of Zepeda. “I had to go in my bag. He just kept coming. He tried to pin me against the ropes so I had to switch it up and not sit against the ropes too long.”

When asked who may be next on his list, Stevenson welcomed all challengers while noting he plans to keep leveling up his game. “Whoever. I want to go back to the drawing board, work on my game a little bit. Get physically stronger and when I come back, I’ll be even better.”

Matias Decisions Puello in Barnburner to Win Super Lightweight Title

Subriel Matias became a two-time world champion with a majority decision over Alberto Puello to win the WBC Super Lightweight title in high-action, high-contact fight.

The fight was fought at close quarters with Matias walking forward and throwing his customary high volume work rate. Puello was very effective counterpunching and

In round five, Matias was cut over his left eye. Matias and Puello battled down the stretch but the judges preferred the volume of Matias to the tune of 115-113 twice and 114-114.

Matias landed 255 766 punches; Puello was 267 of 735

Matias, 140 lbs of Fajardo, PR is now 23-2. Puello, 139.8 lbs of Las Vegas via Dominican Republic is 24-1.

After the decision was announced, top contender Dalton Smith entered the ring and a fight with Matias was announced for November 22nd in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

“When I lost (to Liam Paro) in 2024, a lot of people laughed at me, but I told them I would come back and be a world champion once again and here it is.”

David Morrell Gets Decision over Khataev

In a 10-round war, David Morrell won a razor thin split decision over Imam Khataev in a light heavyweight bout.

In round two, Morrell started swelling around his right eye. Khataev was cut over his right eye. In round five, Khataev began to bleed from his nose. Late in the round, Khataev uncorked an overhand right that put Morrell on the canvas.

Khataev hurt Morrell on several occasions. Morrell made a late flurry late that won him the fight as he won by scores of 96-93 and 95-94 and Khataev took a 95-94 talley.

Morrell, 174.8 lbs of Santa Clara, CUB us 12-1. Khataevm 174.8 lbs of Sydney, AUS vis Russia is 10-1.

When asked about the potential of a rematch with Khataev, Morrell welcomed the challenge. “Why not? It was a great fight. I don’t say no to a rematch. If the people say they want a rematch and they liked the fight, I don’t say no to anybody. I’m ready. I don’t care.”

Tsutsumi Stops Ruiz in 2

Reito Tsutsumi stopped Michael Ruiz in round two of their four-round lightweight bout.

In round one, Tsutumi dropped Ruiz with a right to the body. Ruiz was dropped again with another body shot. Early in round two, Tsutsumi dropped Ruiz with a straight left and the fight was stopped at 28 seconds.

Tsutsumi, 134.6 lbs of Tokyo is now 2-0 with one knockout. Ruiz, 134.8 lbs of Lacey Township, NJ is 2-8-1.

Edgar Berlanga vs. Hamzah Sheeraz – 12 Rounds, Super Middleweight
Berlanga: 167.6 lbs

Sheeraz: 167.6 lbs

Edgar Berlanga

What’s the message behind the Tottenham Hotspur jersey you’re wearing?

“It’s my favorite team. I love them. I wanted to make sure his people knew it.”

What’s going to happen on fight night?

“Saturday night is going to have fireworks. I’m ready and locked in. I’m ready to f*** this dude up.”

Why do you believe you’re on a different level than Hamzah Sheeraz?

“He’s easy work and I’m going to show it. That style from London doesn’t work over here. You saw what I did to Jason Quigley. We’re going to go in there, get gritty and take him to the trenches.

How do you see Saturday playing out?

“I’m going to go in there and hurt him. I don’t really like to predict rounds, but I’m locked in. It’s going to be a spectacular night and we’re coming out victorious.”

Hamzah Sheeraz

What are your feelings after the face-off and ahead of the fight?

“We’re feeling good, feeling ready. Right now, it’s just about enjoying it, going with the gameplan and getting it on tomorrow night.”

How have you kept your focus on Edgar Berlanga?

“Doing what I do. I’ve kept myself from getting emotionally involved and remaining confident in the work that I’ve done.”

Final message to Edgar Berlanga and your fans?

“Be ready to tune into a great fight.”

Frank Warren, Queensberry Promotions

What do you think about the matchup?

“I think it’s a great fight, that’s what we made the fight. We’re here to win it. He’s cool, calm, and collected. All he needs to do in the ring is continue that, remain composed, and it’s his fight.”

What are you looking for out of your fighter?

“I expect fireworks. No excuses about the weight. A good Hamzah is a really good, quality fighter. I’m telling you that he can do this. He’s a hurtful, spiteful, puncher, and we’ll see if the other guy can take that.”

Shakur Stevenson vs. William Zepeda – 12 Rounds, WBC Lightweight Title
Stevenson: 135 lbs

Zepeda: 134.6 lbs

Shakur Stevenson

How are you feeling 24 hours away from Saturday?

“Honestly, I’m prepared and ready. I try not to think about the future, I try to remain in the present. Right now, we’re at the weigh-ins. Mentally, I’m ready, but I’m not worried about tomorrow. I’m having fun.”

Why are you confident your style will beat Zepeda?

“I’m confident because I put the work in. I know I’ve put the work in since I’ve been here. This is my dream and my destiny. These people can’t take this away from me.”

What kind of message are you sending with your Tom and Jerry hat?

“Jerry is going to kick Tom’s a**, just like he’s been kicking his a** the whole series.”

William Zepeda

What he’s feeling one day away from the fight

“I had a finger lifted up to me, that’s disrespect. Disrespect to my family. We’re here and we’re ready.”

Below is what the fighters and their teams had to say:

Edgar Berlanga

What are your thoughts on Saturday’s card?

“For Oscar to say we shouldn’t be the main event, New York City is my city. I was born and raised here and I’m a star here. It’s only right.”

What’s your reaction to your manager saying you’ll knock Hamzah out?

“You know I’m a king in the first round. I’m going to touch his jaw. He’s a giraffe”

What are your final thoughts heading into Saturday?

“I’m knocking him the f*** out. I’m locked in.”

Hamzah Sheeraz

What’s your reaction to Berlanga’s first round knockout prediction?

“In response to that clown [Berlanga] over there, he knows what’s coming.”

How do you keep your cool amid all the chaos?

“At the end of the day, I’m here to do a job. I’ve put in my work and I’m going to knock this sausage out.”

Do you see any fear or insecurity in Berlanga?

“Not really. This is me doing me. I’m just doing me.”

How does this new weight class fit you?

“It feels great. Saturday night I’ll show you what I’m about.”

What are your final thoughts and anticipation ahead of Saturday?

“I feel great. Myself and Andy (Lee) know what we’re going to do and we’ll do exactly that.”

Shakur Stevenson

Why is this your moment to shine and how will you remind people you’re one of the best boxers in the world?

“I’m here. I’ve been calling this dude out for three years. I heard Oscar ( De La Hoya) say they’ve been trying to get this fight for three years but they’re lying. They had an opportunity to fight me before, but they turned it down. Come Saturday night I’m coming to beat his a**. I’m coming to whoop his a** and I stand by that.”

What’s bringing your energy out for Saturday?

“Everyone’s acting like this guy’s a threat. That he’s a big monster, number one in everything…I want to see him on Saturday, that’s what I want to see.”

What are your final thoughts and prediction for Saturday?

“I’m locked in. I put in the work and Saturday night it’ll all take care of itself. Zepeda can bring whatever he wants, do whatever he has to do, but he’s going to bring out the best in me.”

William Zepeda

What’s your message to the fans ahead of Saturday?

“On Saturday, Mexico is going to celebrate a new champion.”

How do you think Shakur will fight you on Saturday?

“Shakur is going to bring his elusive style, but we have a fight plan in place to neutralize that. I think we’ve done a great job and it’ll be a good fight.”

Alberto Puello

What does a victory mean for you on Saturday?

“I’m in the best condition that I’ve ever been in in my career. It’s great to have another opponent with the caliber of Matias as a stepping stone in my career. I look forward to Saturday.”

What do you think Matias brings to the table on Saturday?

“I think the Boogeyman in this division is me because I have the title.”

On being able to take Matias’ power on the chin

“It’s just another one. I’ve faced opponents like him before.”

Subriel Matias

On Puello’s claim that he’s the Boogeyman

“I’m very grateful for this opportunity and I understand that I’m the challenger, but we’ll see what happens on saturday.”

What makes you different come Saturday?

“Everything is different. Everything will be determined on Saturday, but once he [Puello] feels the pressure on Saturday, we’ll see how he takes that power on his chin.”

David Morrell

What’s your mentality and thoughts ahead of Saturday?

“I think he’s a good fighter. I’m 100% for this fight and Saturday night is going to be my night.”

What’s it going to take to get the victory on Saturday?

“You’re going to get a chance to see the best version of me. Unfortunately I didn’t take the win in my last fight, but you’re going to see the best version of me on Saturday.”

Imam Khataev

What does Saturday mean to you?

“I’m ready. I had a good training camp in Canada, but I’m here now and I’m ready.”

What do you see in Morrell and how do you envision the fight playing out?

“I respect him. I look at him as any other opponent I’ve had. I’ve had big fights before and I’ve had a good camp. I’m ready.”

Reito Tsutsumi

How do you feel fighting in New York again?

“For the first fight I wasn’t able to give 100%. Now, I’m used to the New York crowd and scene, so this fight will definitely be better than the previous one.

How will this fight be different from your first?

“This will be my second fight and I’m still trying to figure out my style, but this time I’m definitely going to show the world and my fans what I can do.”

Rick Reeno, COO, Ring Magazine

“This is an unbelievable card…I have goosebumps just thinking about it. This card is unbelievable from top to bottom. You never see a bad [Subriel] Matias fight, he’s a can’t miss fighter and the same for David Morrell. [Imam] Khataev wants to make a statement and the winner will go onto much better things.”

“Shakur Stevenson – you can’t say enough about him. He’s right at the door and he’s either going to knock on it or break it down Saturday night. The one thing I’ve learned in this sport is you can’t overlook a Mexican fighter [Zepeda]. He knows the situation he’s in, being a big underdog. He wants to make a big statement this Saturday.”

“Sheeraz, it’s his first fight at 168, first one in the United States and he’s going up against the king of NY. Bombs away. Edgar [Berlanga] has told me he’s going for the kill from the first round and Hamzah feels confident he can take Edgar out. It’s one of those fights that the winner will go on to much greater things…maybe Canelo. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Oscar De La Hoya, Golden Boy Promotions

“We’re very excited for , and no disrespect to Sheeraz, what should be the main event. I think Shakur Stevenson is a great fighter, hands down. I have a lot of respect for him. I think, by far, Shakur is one of the greatest fighters today. But he’s facing William Zepeda, who is a machine. He’s wanted this fight for quite a while now, I think both fighters have wanted this fight for quite a while. I really feel that everything happens for a reason. This fight was supposed to happen several years or months ago, but the fact that William Zepeda is active, he keeps fighting, he keeps winning, he’s probably one of the most active fighters in the ring today, throwing over 1,000 punches over 12 rounds. It’s not going to be an easy fight. And I think that’s why this fight here, with William Zepeda and Shakur Stevenson, is a candidate for fight of the year already. That’s how good its going to be.”

Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Boxing

“This is a fantastic fight card. Boxing is in a great place and thank you to Turki Alalshikh for his investment and thank you to DAZN, the global home of boxing. His Excellency has done it again in Flushing Meadows. It’s refreshing to see a new venue.”

“Four standout fights. I think [David] Morrell against [Imam] Kataev is going to be one of the great 175lb matchups of recent years. [Alberto] Puello against [Subriel] Matias, a great world championship matchup. Then the two co-main events. I think this guy [Shakur] Stevenson should be an American superstar, but to show greatness you need the right dance partner in [William] Zepeda. You will see true greatness from Shakur Stevenson on Saturday night.”

“Hamzah [Sheeraz] against Edgar [Berlanga]. What a brilliant fight — two great fighters. Well done to His Excellency and DAZN as well. They’re putting on a schedule that’s unrivaled in boxing. It’s an honor to be involved in an incredible night.“

Frank Warren, Queensberry Promotions

“What a fabulous card at Louis Armstrong Stadium on Saturday. Fabulous fights all the way through. It’s a real tough fight [Berlanga vs. Sheeraz] for both of them, but I promise you’re going to see something special.”

“The undercard is just amazing. His Excellency has put together something phenomenal and if you’re a fight fan, you’re in fight heaven. It’s on DAZN – the capital of boxing around the world and you’re going to see something special on Saturday. We’re going to take this win back to the UK with us.”

Spencer Brown, Goldstar Promotions

“Wouldn’t it be funny if the king of Essex (Hamzah Sheeraz)  became the king of NY? We’re very confident in this fight.”

Keith Connolly, Edgar Berlanga’s manager

“It’s a huge platform for Edgar. It’s a great fight as well. Four fights on this card with every one being a main event, but this is the type of platform and opponent that will turn Edgar into a superstar. If Edgar gets through this, there’s huge plans going forward. I’m guaranteeing a knock out Saturday.”

Wednesday’s workout also saw appearances by WBC Junior Welterweight Champion Alberto Puello (24-0 10 KOs), former IBF 140 lb beltholder Subriel Matias (22-2, 22 KOs), and former WBA (Regular) Light Heavyweight Champion David Morrell (11-1, 9 KOs) before their bouts on Saturday. Japanese boxing prodigy and Ring Ambassador Reito Tsutsumi (1-0, 0 KOs), showed off his hands to the fans and media in attendance as well before he steps into the ring for a six-round featherweight fight.

Below is what the fighters had to say from their workouts:

Edgar Berlanga

What are your intentions for Saturday?

“I’m just locked in, man. I’m excited. I’m back home in my city. Tomorrow’s the press conference, so every day as we get closer to the fight I’m getting more locked in mentally. I want to perform, look good, shine, superstar savage.”

Any words for Oscar de la Hoya ahead of tomorrow’s press conference?

“F*** Oscar de la Hoya. I’ll see you tomorrow…maybe I’ll smack the s*** out of you.”

Any last message for Sheeraz?

“He’s a f****** muppet.”

Hamzah Sheeraz

What did you want to show people in your open workout?

“Just a little bit of what I’ve been practicing on. This is the first time I’ve done an open workout, so it was interesting. First time in New York, why not.”

How will your new weight class and time with Andy Lee affect this fight going into Saturday?

“After the last fight I’ve identified the changes that needed to be made, the weight was one of them.”

What’d you feel in yesterday’s face-off?

“You gotta remember now, a couple nights away from fight night, tensions are high. We just want to go in there and get cracking.”

Did you take anything away from yesterday’s face-off?

“Not really, no. Energy as expected and hopefully we both bring it on fight night.”

How do you prepare mentally for whatever Berlanga brings?

“To be fair, I don’t need to, I’m a very strong man in my faith so I’ve done exactly what I need to prevail.”

What’s the message for the fans in New York and back home?

“Tune in and for all the New York fans, this is my first one [fight] here in America. I look forward to putting on a performance for you all.”

Shakur Stevenson

What emotions are you feeling right now as we get closer to fight night in your backyard?

“I’m locked in, I’m ready, I’m focused, I can’t wait to show off. I was made for this moment, so I can’t wait to show everybody what I’m made of.”

How are you visualizing the fight going down on Saturday?

“You’ll have to wait and see. I can’t wait to touch his chin. That’s all I’m focused on, doing my thing and coming out victorious.”

What do you have to say to the fans before Saturday?

“For the fans who have supported me, I appreciate you all. You’re the ones who I do this for and the ones I make sure I get up and do eight mile runs for. The hard work gets put in because of you. Everyone stuck with me through the dark times and we’re going to have a party on Saturday.”

William Zepeda

You’ve been influenced by this Cuban school of boxing. How has that changed your style?

“That style has definitely benefited me and my career. It’s one of the reasons why my trainers have helped me get to where I’m at, the combinations make them nice and long, being able to find the distance while also letting the opponent come in short.”

How will your style neutralize Shakur’s agility and speed?

“My style will definitely be implemented. Shakur is a fighter that’s always moving, but my punch volume will put pressure on him, which will be the key to success on Saturday.”

How does Mexico’s Gold Cup win motivate you?

“This is a great motivation. My fellow Mexicans have taken a very important win against the U.S. and that will only motivate me to get a win on Saturday – Mexico against the U.S.”

Alberto Puello

How deep are you going to have to dig to face someone like your opponent [Matias]?

“I’m a student of the sweet science of hitting and not getting hit, but I think having an opponent like Subriel Matias is going to bring that real wasp from within me to take that win on Saturday.”

How important is it for you to sway the pendulum in your favor?

“It is Puerto Rican territory, but it’s also Dominican territory because there are a lot of Dominicans here. I know I’m going to have the love and support of all the Dominican people.”

What do you have to say to your supporters?

“I’m making a strong call to all the Dominican people, not only to see the fight, but because I’m going to give them a real reason to celebrate me. I’m going to retain my championship.”

Subriel Matias

How important is it to have that knockout tool in your pocket on Saturday?

“Those are just numbers. I am very anxious and anticipating the kind of show I’m going to bring on Saturday.”

Many people want to know if you can actually handle someone from a distance?

“I only have one style and all the fans know it. I am here to actually implement my style. The question is can somebody like Puello withstand the kind of power that I bring. I’m not Sandor Martín, no one like that. I’m definitely bringing some serious power, so we’ll see.”

David Morrell

You’re part of that new generation of Cuban boxers, where do you get your inspiration from?

“My inspiration comes from my family first, and God, too. My girlfriend is a big supporter of me along with my team.”

When it comes to your boxing skills, what is your biggest influence to combine those two styles: Cuban school of boxing and the more aggressive, front-foot style?

“My brother and my dad, too. They’re teaching me…always telling me that I can do it. They tell me they look good, I know my moves. It’s a combination of different boxers into one…that’s me.”

Where did you get your dance moves from?

“I got my dancing from my mom. My mom is always teaching me and I couldn’t do anything before that. My mom is always telling me, ‘you go to a party and want a girl? You need to dance.’ She’s always teaching me and we have a good relationship.”

Reito Tsutsumi

Where did you get your technique from?

“I was able to train for three weeks on the west side, and that’s where I learned the technique.”

What are your thoughts on fighting in New York for your second professional fight?

“Last time I wasn’t able to finish like I wanted to, but this time I have the experience and I look forward to getting this one done.”

Edgar Berlanga

What are your plans for Hamzah on Saturday night?

“We’re ready and locked in. It’s a big night, July 12, and we’re going to turn up.”

How’s the moment feel being here in New York ahead of Saturday?

“It’s amazing. I want to thank my people, everybody that’s coming out July 12. I’m super locked in and I’m ready to perform. It’s a blessing to be here, to headline in New York where I was born and raised – it’s the concrete jungle.”

Do you have any message to Hamzah and his team?

“I don’t give a f*** about them. F*** them. They already know the vibes. On July 12, I’m going to kick his a** and move on to the next one.”

With what’s been said around the plans for the winner of this fight, what would a win mean for you?

“He [Sheeraz] has to go through me first. July 12 is the night I’m looking forward to right now. There’s a lot in the future and a lot of big fights to be made, but like I said, this weekend I have to f*** this motherf***** up. That’s it and then we move on.”

Hamzah Sheeraz

How are you feeling moving up to 168 lbs?

“I’m feeling great and looking forward to putting on a spectacular performance in front of both the Puerto Rican and Mexican fans. I’m glad to have the opportunity here.”

Why is Saturday’s fight different?

“I have a lot to prove. This is my first fight in America and I’ve received an amazing reception here…a lot of love. I’m looking forward to Saturday.”

What is your final message to fans across the world and here in New York before Saturday?

“It’s going to be a great performance, a great fight, and it’s my time to give back to you all.”

Shakur Stevenson

What was that signal you made towards Team Zepeda?

“I just wanted to let them know that I’m ready and I’m coming. This is my spot, my opportunity, and I can’t wait to show the fans who I truly am.”

Are you getting a little more energy knowing you have the chance to remind everyone how great you’ve been at every level of boxing?

“There’s a lot of doubters and haters, people who think that I’m not who I say I am. So, come Saturday night we’ll see if they’re right or wrong, but I promise you they’re wrong.”

What’s going on with all the Tom and Jerry discussions online?

“If you call me Jerry then I’m whopping Tom’s a**. That’s what I’m coming here for.”

What was your message to Zepeda?

“Belt to motherf****** a**. Belt, belt, belt.”

William Zepeda

It’s your first time in New York, but you’ve already been here in your head. What did you visualize about this experience?

“I’m very happy and excited to be here in New York. I never thought that only a few years later I’d be chasing a title here in the city that never sleeps. I visualized myself getting a victory here and taking a walk with my title and belt in Central Park.”

What does it mean to be facing a fighter with a deep pedigree in amateur boxing, a silver medalist olympian?

“I’m sure that I’m facing a very worthy opponent, I certainly understand his skills. I’m just going to take this opportunity and write my victory in the boxing history books with golden letters.”

Alberto Puello

Why are you so willing to show your Dominican power?

“Of course, first and foremost I want to thank God and my team for bringing me up to a higher level. I’m ready to go to war on Saturday.”

What do you have to prove on Saturday?

“On Saturday, with this victory we’re going to show that Puerto Rico has their own legacy, but the Dominican Republic will also show up and show out.”

Subriel Matias

How does it feel being back here in New York?

“I’m very happy. Not only am I very grateful to my team, but also my promoter because they made this possible.”

What did you take to heart after the loss to Liam Paro?

“It’s about maturity, being able to accept [mistakes] and understanding that they have a cost. That was my day and it was my price to pay. Now I’m ready and he’s ready.”

What does it mean to fight like a local in New york and how does it motivate you?

“Besides being in Puerto Rico, there’s a beast within me that’s getting ready to come out and it’s going to come out and show up on Saturday. Let’s hope they [Puello] can control that beast.”

David Morrell

How does it feel to be back in New York?

“I feel great. I came back more focused on myself and on my training. I’m back.”

What did you mean when you said “you got this?”

“Everything is in my head and everything is about the preparation. I am ready for this and no disrespect to my opponent, but I got this.”

What have you taken from past fights ahead of coming into Saturday?

“I just have to do what I do best – be myself and always be happy. That’s been a huge aspect to my success.”

Stevenson, a three-division champion, will make the third defense of his belt against arguably his toughest opponent yet in undefeated Mexican fighter Zepeda, his first shot at a world title.

The stacked show, to be broadcast live globally on DAZN, will also see Alberto Puello defend his WBC junior welterweight title against Subriel Matias, while David Morrell Jnr will seek to deliver an immediate response after his defeat to David Benevidez when he takes on Imam Khataev.

July’s show follows on from Ring Magazine successfully delivering its first two fight nights earlier this year in London and New York.  In April, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium staged an epic battle between Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn, followed in May by the first ever event to transform Times Square into an outdoor boxing venue, which saw wins for Devin Haney and WBO and The Ring super lightweight title holder Teofimo Lopez but a surprise defeat for Ryan Garcia against Rolando Romero.

RING MAGAZINE III DOUBLEHEADER PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES EDGAR BERLANGA VS. HAMZAH SHEERAZ AND  SHAKUR STEVENSON VS. WILLIAM ZEPEDA

NEW YORK, NY – May 15, 2025 – To kick off the massive Ring Magazine III doubleheader, Ring Magazine’s No. 9-ranked Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga and No.3-ranked Hamzah Sheeraz, along with No. 4-ranked Shakur Stevenson and No.5-ranked William “El Camarón” Zepeda, met face-to-face at the Palladium Times Square in New York City today ahead of their July 12 fight at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, New York City, live worldwide on DAZN.

The bout follows a pair of star-studded Ring Magazine contests, first at London’s Tottenham Stadium and then in New York’s Times Square, which achieved over 116 billion combined online and social media impressions.

Today’s press conference, hosted by Wade Plemons, featured faceoffs of Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) and Sheeraz (21-0-1, 17 KOs) ahead of their super middleweight fight and Olympic Silver Medalist Stevenson (23-0, 11 KOs) as he looks to defend his WBC Lightweight Title on July 12 against Golden Boy Promotions’ Zepeda (33-0, 27 KOs).

This is what the fighters and their teams had to say:

Edgar Berlanga:

On the upcoming matchup vs. Sheeraz:

“You already know what time it is. I’m knocking this mother***er out. He said we’re overlooking him, but I don’t overlook any fighter. You are in NYC. You are in the lion’s den. We’re going into this looking to hurt him. I’m going to break every bone in this guy’s face and do what I do best: put on a show. Every fight, you have to turn it up.”

On his confidence:

“I’ve always been like this [confident]. You saw me in the Canelo fight. I went toe-to-toe with him. I was trash-talking him to his face. I’m like that at the highest level.”

On Sheeraz’s fighting style:

“He’s a basic fighter. I’ve been boxing since I was six years old. What he brings, I’ve already seen. He’s trained by Andy Lee, I messed up the last fighter, and now I’ll mess up this fighter.”

On fight prediction:

“If he comes to fight the first round, I’m knocking him out.”

On a potential Canelo rematch:

“His people are asking for the rematch. It was a big fight – every bar in New York and Puerto Rico was shut down. I gave him 12 rounds when all the other fighters he fought had more experience. I want a Canelo rematch because the fans are asking for it.”

Hamzah Sheeraz:

His message to Berlanga:

“I’m coming, and I’m coming for everything. I feel like this fight, for the first time in my career, I’m being underestimated. I get it; you’re only as good as your last performance in boxing. I’m telling you now, on July 12 – when I get the win – the Hamzah Sheeraz hype train will be back on again. We’re coming with everything.”

On his last fight:

“I’ve learned a lot of things, but it’s all well and good, that’s the past. We’re in New York, everything is about the future and all about July 12. I’m ready.”

On being called soft:

“If I were soft, I wouldn’t be going into a fight like this, at 160 at a new weight. On July 12, we’ll see what I’m all about.”

On his prediction for the fight:

“I’ve learned a lot since my last fight, not just in the ring but outside as well. I’m going to go out there, throw a few jabs, land a right hand straight on the chin, and knock him the f*** out. But if it goes 12 rounds, it goes 12 rounds. Either way, it’ll be explosive.”

On fighting Canelo in the future:

“I’m not going to talk about that. I need to smash Berlanga’s face, and then we can talk about that.”

Shakur Stevenson:

On how he expects the fight to go:

“He’s coming in here to throw as many punches as possible, overwhelm me, and try to bully me. I’m not going to let that happen. I don’t believe in all the bull*** he’s talking about. I’m going to go out there and do what I do best, win. In spectacular fashion. I’ll come out there to whoop his a**.”

On Zepeda’s plea to “stand up and fight:”

“I’m coming there to put on a performance. I’m not focused on standing there and fighting, I’m not focused on boxing, I’m coming in there to put on the best performance of my career. On July 12, Zepeda is going to remember my name.”

On his performance:

“I’m going to train my ass off. Come July 12, he’ll have the best version of Shakur Stevenson in front of him. He will see something different that he hasn’t seen before. If he thought I was a skilled fighter before, wait until he sees the best version of myself on fight night. He has no chance.

On being compared to the boxing greats:

“It’s cool, but I don’t get too caught up in that. I don’t want to get trapped where I’m thinking so highly of myself, and I’m not thinking of the fight. Know that I’m not sleeping on William Zepeda. I understand that this is a fighter who has been waiting for this opportunity his entire life. I’ve known Zepeda since I was 16, and he was focused then. I understand this is his moment too, so at the end of the day, I have to lock in. I’m going to step on him, and that’s what I’m coming to do.”

On looking ahead to a potential Tank fight:

“Right now, all that’s on my mind is July 12. Of course, I want the Tank fight. I’ve been saying it for years. Truthfully, if I don’t get past Zepeda, then there is no Tank fight. Zepeda is first, and I’m going to stand on business.”

William Zepeda:

On his upcoming fight against Stevenson:

“It’s an honor to be here. This is the fruit of 16 years of labor. This is the opportunity of my life, and I believe on July 12, everyone is going to know who William “El Camarón” Zepeda is. I know that I have to prepare one million percent for this fight. It’s the biggest fight of my career, the biggest fight of my life, and like I’ve told my team, I can’t leave this in the judge’s hands. I have to come out here and give everything I have in my heart and stop this fight.”

On being overlooked by Eddie Hearn:

“I don’t care what Eddie says. I’m preparing really well. I’m fully aware of Shakur’s skillset, and I am doing what needs to be done to win on July 12. Shakur says he’s going to stand and fight – let’s stand and fight.”

On what he expects from Stevenson:

“I know that Shakur is a great fighter, and I understand the opposition in front of us, but I am training for that. I have a plan A and plan B. A lot of fighters I’ve fought think I’m a guy who just throws punches until they’re in the ring with me.”

On Stevenson, saying he’ll step on him:

“I’ve always been a fighter known to be very disciplined, very focused. This is not an exception. This is the biggest fight of my life and the greatest opportunity I have. I want to be known as a Mexican legend, but not just a Mexican legend, a legend in the sport of boxing. I look at this fight like a movie, like Meldrick Taylor versus Chavez, and I want that type of fight. I want to give the fans what they want.”

His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority:

“This card is very important for boxing and nobody can predict the results. The Ring Magazine III features a historic card in a historic place, the first-ever boxing match in a tennis arena. I see the eye of Shakur as the Tank, the eye of Zepeda in big fights in Mexico, the eye of the result in Berlanga, and the eye of Sheeraz as Canelo. This whole card is very important to me, it has brilliant fighters and the results of this card will affect the next one and all of boxing. We have two big cards coming up in August and in October, but this card is very important to me. Shakur, Zepeda, Sheeraz, Berlanga, and the result of this card will affect the future.”

Rick Reeno, COO of The Ring Magazine:

“Our first card at Tottenham, Eubank vs. Benn, that was about legacy. Our Times Square card was about history, and to me personally, this card is all about action. These are action fights from top to bottom. Starting with Edgar Berlanga and Hamzah Sheeraz at super middleweight, this fight could be bombs away from the very first round. There’s a lot of animosity there. I know Edgar’s taken some offense with Hamzah coming to his backyard. Edgar is looking to end it early. Hamzah is looking to end this fight by knockout. I really don’t expect this fight to go the distance. It is going to be fireworks from the first round.”

“We have Shakur Stevenson in our other main event, defending his WBC lightweight title against mandatory challenger William Zepeda. Shakur, without question, is one of the best pure boxers in the sport. He’s going up against Zepeda, an aggressive puncher. A lot of people look to July 4 for fireworks. July 12 is when the real fireworks are going to happen.”

Eddie Hearn, Chairman of Matchroom Boxing:

“This event will be the most exciting of the three Ring Magazine events that have occurred in the span of just a few weeks.

“People always ask me the difference in the U.S. coming over from the U.K. Stevenson is a superstar, not just a superstar in boxing, but in American sport. He’s 27 years old. He’s a three-division world champion, and he’s never broken a sweat. Eric Gomez said it right, comparing him to Floyd Mayweather, but I’d also put him with the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard, all of the greats. For greatness, you need a great opponent, and that’s William Zepeda.

“Edgar Berlanga against Sheeraz. Berlanga is a fantastic puncher, and Hamzah Sheeraz is going to be very well-suited at 168, especially with Andy Lee in the corner. One of the best trainers in the world.

“This is the fight where Shakur Stevenson will show everybody how great and special he is. You’re talking about pound-for-pound number one greatness for this man. The Ring Magazine is doing such an incredible job with these cards.”

Eric Gomez, President of Golden Boy Promotions:

“After the last show we did in New York [May 2 Times Square Event], we all need more punches. These are the fighters to do it. William Zepeda’s output is incredible. Edgar Berlanga, one of the most exciting fighters in boxing today. And then. Shakur is the closest thing to a Floyd Mayweather, if not better.”

“These fighters are great. It’s a can’t-miss card. These fighters are going to come to fight and take care of business. They want to prove to the fans and the world of boxing that they’re all action. It’s going to be a great show.”

Spencer Brown, Goldstar Promotions:

“I spoke to Keith Connolly earlier. To reiterate, he said Hamzah is only going to go six rounds. We’re coming into the lion’s den. He’s moved up to 168 lbs. Berlanga is a very big guy, and it’s not going to be an easy task, but we’re going to beat him, and we will win it comfortably. He’s six-foot-four, a big man. We think that we can definitely win the fight, and we’re quite confident.”

Keith Connolly

“It’s a huge fight for Edgar. Anytime Edgar fights in New York, it’s a huge event. I think it’s going to be bombs away, but I don’t see this going past five rounds. Sheeraz is a great fighter, but there are levels to this sport, and he’s not on Edgar’s level. I think it’s going to be a massacre on July 12, and I see a violent knockout coming. It’s going to be a great event. Our fight is definitely going to be the fight of the night. Expect an explosive knockout, and this will be a springboard for Edgar going forward.”
