CATTERALL VS. BARBOZA JR + UNDERCARD FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport Chairman:
“A huge night of boxing at the wonderful Co-op Live here in Manchester on Saturday – live on DAZN around the world. For me one of the best fights in the world at 140 lbs. It’s the interim WBO Super-Lightweight World Title between England’s Jack Catterall and America’s Arnold Barboza. Jack Catterall, the man that should be undisputed. The man that has gone through Jorge Linares, Josh Taylor, Regis Prograis and now this man awaits – 31-0 Arnold Barboza that sat at the top of the pecking order for a long long time. One of Golden Boy’s top charges. Straight off a fantastic victory over Ramirez in Saudi Arabia. Ready now to put himself in a golden position for huge fights within the division.”
Jack Catterall:
“What a card we’ve got on Saturday night, three other lads from my gym fighting, some great live fights but on my fight, it’s a huge opportunity for me on Saturday.
“I think we’re both taking confidence from the preparations we’ve had, I don’t want easy fights, Arnold has been in the position that I’ve been in waiting for that opportunity and I don’t think that you can sit back now the way that boxing is on the sidelines, you’ve got to take your chance. I’ve got good momentum, I feel better with every camp, this camp has been great, we’ve bettered it from the last time, and I do believe I’m a better fighter and I get him out of there on Saturday.
“I’ve been very active and the confidence comes from the time spent in the gym and all the hard work has been done and it’s time to relax, recover and perform. I’ve got better and better through the momentum and activity and that’s where the confidence has come from.
“I’m in a great division at 140 lbs with a lot of tremendous fighters, but nothing matters until after Saturday night, I have to remain focused on Arnold. That being said, we understand the business, there’s so many great fights to be made. Teofimo Lopez has the WBO Title, hopefully that’s a fight that can be made down the line, but I’ve got to beat him and beat him well on Saturday.
“This is the final hurdle on Saturday, it’s a big fight, it’s high risk, high reward like he said, I’m ready and we’re bringing that belt back to Charley on Sunday morning.”
Jamie Moore:
“Jack’s on a fantastic run, he’s in the form of his life, and he needs to be as these types of fight and the challenges that he wants to put himself in front of, you need to be on top form. Activity was always an issue two or three years ago when he wasn’t getting the fight that he wanted. When you look back to 2018, I know Barboza’s team say they have been waiting a long time, but Jack was mandatory for the WBO Title then and for some reason or the other it kept dragging on, different fights were getting made in front of him. He eventually got his chance and the decision didn’t go our way, and it brings us to the point we’re at now, and it’s going to take some fighter to beat him, and that time is not yet.
“I’ve said for years that Jack is the best 140 lbs fighter in the world, he’s just needed the chance to prove it. He’s been doing that for the last couple of years, I’ve no doubt that Barboza is going to come with everything he’s got, he’s a solid fighter, but Jack has the kryptonite for everyone, he’s always a step ahead, and he’ll show that on Saturday.”Arnold Barboza Jr:
“We had another offer to fight the main event at home, but I just want to fight the best. I believe Jack is a really good fighter at the top of the division, and I think we’re the best, I don’t think the champions are better than us to be honest. We’re always ready for challenges, we’re ready to go.
“I believe I’m the best in the division, I don’t think anyone can fuck with me. I’m just confident in myself, at the end of the day we can do all he talking, I know he’s not a trash talker and I’m not a trash talker, Saturday is going to determine everything and that’s all the matters.
“I’ve watched a lot of fights where people have gone to enemy territory and they are getting booed – I hope it’s sold out and I hope I get booed, that’s just going to turn me on. I’m excited and it’s a dream, a big fight with high risk and high reward, no more of those low risk, low reward fights, I’m excited to get in there and dance with him.
“I really believe I stop him. The way camp has gone, we isolated ourselves with 8,000ft elevation, running in the snow, everything we did and the the way I’ve been feeling in sparring and my sparring partners can attest, I feel stronger and better than ever. He’s coming with everything, I’m coming with everything, so let’s go.
“This fight means everything to me. There’s fans in the UK, expect a great fight and an exciting fight, and I hope to bring some of those fans back with me to the US.”
Arnold Barboza Sr:
“We’re ready and we’ve been ready for this opportunity. We’re traveling but we don’t care where it’s at, we’ve been waiting for this for a long time, and it’s here and we’re here. Traveling is fun, it’s a little bit cold, but it’s fun. There’s no fear at all, we had the opportunity to fight at home in a main event on the same day for the same pay, but we’re looking to fight the best and i think Jack is one of the best, so that’s why we’re here and made that decision.
“It’s number one against number two and that’s what it’s supposed to be. The best against the best, give the fans what they deserve, and this fight is going to be worth every penny.
“It’s going to be an exciting fight. We wouldn’t make the trip over here if we weren’t confident, we’re going to stop Jack.”Alfie Sharman:
“We’re back in this incredible arena in Manchester and what a fight we have ahead of us on Saturday. From top to bottom it’s a stacked card, and Jack Catterall, a local favorite around here, has been on a remarkable run recently, but he has a tough fight on Saturday in the very talented and undefeated Arnold Barboza Jr, and the winner takes it all with a potential World Title fight later in the year. I wish everyone on the card and the two main guys the very best of luck on Saturday. We’re looking at two powerhouses of the promotional world here with Eddie and Matchroom and Golden Boy led by Oscar de la Hoya, earlier this week at DAZN we announced the first slate of fights with another powerhouse in the world of boxing with Frank Warren and Queensberry, and we look forward to welcoming Frank and his talented roster from April 1. We at DAZN are the global home of boxing and have a commitment to our subscribers and boxing fans all over the world to deliver the biggest and best fights in 2025 and beyond.”
Reece Bellotti:
“No one saw you all day, from your team? You should sack them. My boys woke me up that day. Why wouldn’t your team check on you in the morning? Why would they not, if they know you’re not feeling right? You just said you didn’t fall ill in the changing room. You just said you didn’t fall ill in the changing room. So you haven’t been right all week. So why make weight, why waste my time and everyone’s time when that was going to happen? Your team should know that. Your story has holes in it. That’s all I’m saying. Who got in the cab with you to the arena, were you on your own? Your team should be getting in there with you. Everyone does that. Everyone goes with their team to the arena. Everybody. So they would have known way before. I’m not denying the fact you was ill. But you knew you was ill way before it came out. Why did you let someone pull you out in the changing room. There isn’t a fighter on this table that would do that. The doctor wouldn’t have come into my changing room. There’s holes in your story but I’m not denying that you were ill. At least you had your excuse that night. What’s your excuse this time? That fire burns inside me and it always has done. My Christmas weren’t as good as it could have been, and I blame Michael Gomez for that.”
Michael Gomez Jr:
“Can I just correct you Eddie? I didn’t fall ill in the dressing room. Obviously on fight week I came in here the last time and I was all hooded up. I wasn’t feeling great, but as a fighter you keep your mouth shut and you get on with it. I met my team at the arena on fight night. I had a back and forth with my manager – he wasn’t happy with the way I was. He took it upon himself to get the doctor involved. The doctor came in, did an observation and took me to the room. On my behalf, I should have made it come to light earlier, but as a fighter, at the end of the day I wanted to fight. Why would I tell someone earlier? Either way the fight would have been pulled. If my manager goes and gets the doctor and brings the doctor in what do you want me to do? Do you think that you’re that good to make me pull out? Do you honestly believe you’re that good? You’re a f****ing idiot mate. Absolute idiot. Until my team took it upon themselves to pull me out, I was wanting to fight. You’d have gone in there that night and you’d have beat me up but I’d have taken it like a man and gone home. That’s how it goes. My team did the job that they’re supposed to do. I’m going to beat you. I don’t need any excuses. I’m going to win and I’m going to win horribly. On Saturday night everything gets put to bed.”
Pat McCormack:
“I’m buzzing for the fight. Obviously I’ve been boxing all my life, won medals all over the world, got all the experience I need. I’m just ready to step up and start winning belts in the pro ranks. I’ve got two belts and I’m looking to push on this year and get some more. With the things I’m working on in the gym, if my opponents aren’t coming to win then it doesn’t work. I think Robbie is a good fighter. He’s been around for years. I saw him fight against Lewis Ritson in Newcastle in a good fight. Every dog has its day, and my days are coming. This is a good fight. I’m looking forward to it. I can’t wait. My full focus is on getting the job done on Saturday night.”
Robbie Davies Jr:
“I think normally if it was just any 6-bout opponent, I’d just say, ‘leave it’. But obviously with his extensive amateur career, everything that he’s achieved. Everyone knows he’s a good fighter. He’s already built himself a platform from the amateurs. I know with this sort of win moving up in weight, which I’ve been dying to for years, I’ve just needed the right opportunity. I think it’s just as big a scalp for me as it is for him. I said straight away, take their hand off, I’ll have that fight. The xxxxxx fight, you’ve got to remember, it was 15/16 months out of the ring. I took the fight on seven weeks’ notice. Even though I’m always in the gym, you’re not in camp are you. There was a lot of things that I would have done differently. But take nothing away from him, it was a great fight. I was over there in their backyard. And then going onto another former World Champion. That’s the sort of calibre I want to be in with. I’m right up for this fight. Everyone knows what you get when you watch me fight. I’m going to bring it. Hopefully it’s a great fight on Saturday night.”
Zelfa Barrett:
“Jazza is a good fighter. When you’re at this level, you fight whoever they put in front of you. I can’t really be picking, if I believe I’m one of the best in the weight division. I’ve just got to beat who you put in front of me. He’s a good fighter but I’ve got goals and aspirations. I need to be a World Champion. Every fight is important. Every fight is a must-win fight. It brings that extra something inside of me to be focused every round, to try and get the knockout. To keep doing what I’m doing.”
Jazza Dickens:
“I’m in really good form. Training has been going well and it’s good to be back on a Matchroom show. I’m feeling really strong. Every fight is a must-win isn’t it Ed and I will win. Being around this Manchester scene here is good because it’s normally Liverpool or Manchester or London. It comes back around doesn’t it. Manchester is flying at the minute. It’s good to be on one of these cards. It’s not too far from home. A lot of people will be coming up for it. Like you say, it is a must-win.”
William Crolla:
“Like you say, on paper it’s a tough fight. He’s boxed over ten rounds. I think he holds a win over a lad who’s just boxed for the English Title at my weight. The lads who have beat him are all international amateurs. They’re not me. I’m going to set about him on Saturday night and I think it will be a massive statement when I am the first to stop him. I’m fully focused on Saturday night but the activity is key and I said Manchester boxing is going to be in again. I’m privileged to be a part of it and there’s going to be some great fights back here.”
Aqib Fiaz:
“Thank you for having us on this amazing show. It’s practically the VIP Gym show. There’s four of us on. The gym is flying, Manchester boxing is flying. Our gym will be at the forefront in the coming years. I’m excited to be back and I’m excited for a big performance on Saturday. Thank you to all my supporters that are coming out. I’ll have my eyes on the Bellotti vs. Gomez Jr fight and hopefully we get the winner.”
Conner Tudsbury:
“I’m really excited to get out on Saturday night. I’ve been training for this for a long time. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity. I’m going to really show you all what I’m made out of on Saturday night. As I said the other day, I couldn’t have a better start to my professional boxing career. Boxing at the Co-op Live, it’s an amazing place. It’s a great atmosphere when the boxing is on. It’s great to be making my debut on the undercard of my stablemate Jack Catterall.I think I’m more suited to the professional game. Smaller gloves and the style and everything like that. I think it’ll be really good. I’ll show you all what a talented boxer I am.”
Alfie Middlemiss:
“I’m just excited. I’d like to say a big thanks to Matchroom for the opportunity to be on this card. It’s the stuff you dream about as a youngster when you’re first getting into boxing. To perform at the Co-op Live is such a massive opportunity for me and I’m bringing massive support from Manchester. I’m excited and I’m ready to go. The gym is thriving at the moment. I’m one of the youngest in the gym so I’m just learning and improving all of the time from all of the main fighters. Manchester boxing is the place to be at the moment. It’s a hotbed of young talented fighters. It’s a great place to be.”
VIDEO: Face Off: Jack Catterall Vs Arnold Barboza With Eddie Hearn
CATTERALL VS. BARBOZA JR LIVE FACE OFF QUOTES
Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport Chairman:
“Welcome everybody to Manchester ahead of what is a brilliant night of boxing next Saturday, the 15th of February, at the Co-op Live in Manchester – live and exclusive around the world on DAZN. For me, one of the best match-ups at 140 lbs.
“The man that should be undisputed – Jack Catterall. No question, one of Britain’s pound-for-pound top fighters right now. Coming off four huge headline events and victories. Jorge Linares, Josh Taylor, Regis Prograis to name a few, and now into potentially the most important fight of his career for this – the WBO interim World Championship.
“Against the man to my left, 31-0, Arnold Barboza Jr. It’s the number one and number two in the world rankings. The man that could be king after this fight. We wanted to do something a little bit different for you tonight.
“Next week will be electric, not just with this fight but an unbelievable undercard in Manchester. The bad blood fight between Reece Bellotti and Michael Gomez Jr for the British and Commonwealth Championships. The step-up for Pat McCormack against Liverpool’s Robbie Davies Jr. Zelfa Barrett from Manchester will fight Jazza Dickens, and so much more.
“This is the fight that they are talking about as potentially one of the best in the division. Not just a great run of form for Jack Catterall, but this man (Barboza Jr) coming off victory in Saudi Arabia against Jose Ramirez. He believes he has the tools to beat Jack Catterall – one of the most in-form fighters at 140 lbs.”
Jack Catterall:
“Of course I respect his ability. Again, he’s said it before, he’s been working hard to get to this position. I’ll stand on what I said – I don’t think he’s a great fighter. I think he’s average, a B class fighter. I can only think of two opponents that he’s boxed. Sean McComb, who beat him, and Ramirez – who I didn’t think was in the best form that night. None the less, give him his credit, he turned up and did what he had to do. It’s a whole different ball game next weekend.
“We’ve watched tape of him and we’ve been studying. We’ve been working hard in the gym and every fight now I feel like we’ve been getting better, with the activity of these big headline fights. I’ll see what happens on fight night. Until the first bell goes, and I see his response, this is a big opportunity, not just for me but for both of us. I’m not leaving it to the judges next Saturday. I believe I stop him, 100%.
“You’ve never seen 12 rounds and you’re not going to see the 12 round distance next Saturday. I think he knows what he’s up against. Listen, we don’t get to this stage in these big fights by overlooking the opponents. I think he’s in for a shock next Saturday. I’m in good form. We got straight back in the gym after the Prograis fight and we’ve been grafting. Things have gone great this camp and I’m going to show it next Saturday. I respect what you’ve done in your journey to get here but it all ends next Saturday.”
Arnold Barboza Jr:
“I’ve been calling for this fight since 2022 when I met him at the Ramirez and Taylor fight. That’s where we met. This is a great opportunity. All of his home support booing me is going to turn me on. It’s something that I’ve dreamed about. This is a fight that I’ve been waiting for my whole career. I worked hard to get here – just like him. Let’s get it on.
“I feel like my whole career I’ve been the underdog. Even when I’m the favourite, I feel like I’ve been overlooked my whole career. People are finally starting to see who Barboza really is. Come February 15th my hand will be raised and that belt will be coming home with me.
“I’m an overall better fighter than him. He calls me a B level fighter but the only thing special about him is that he’s hefty. That’s it. We’ll find out. We can talk and do all that but February 15th is when we will find out. It’s around the corner.
“He can say Ramirez is past his best and I can say the same thing about the last three victories he just had. Linares retired after their fight, Regis was going to retire after their fight. Josh Taylor had a messed up knee. He can say all he wants, I don’t think he’s ever faced anyone like me. He’s going to find out February 15th.
“He doesn’t win this fight inside the distance. He doesn’t win this fight; it’s that simple. If there’s going to be a stoppage it’s going to be me stopping him. We’re going to see. I’m overall better than him at everything. The only thing that makes you different is you’re a lefty, that’s it, you’re average bro. My condition is top notch. You’ll see.
“People don’t know what they’re going to get when it comes to me because I can do it all. He’s going to find out. I can stay, I can brawl and I can box. You’re going to see what a hype job you are, you’re average bro. I’m going to make you look average.”
Catterall vs. Barboza Jr tops a huge night of boxing in Manchester, Watford’s ReeceBellotti (19-5, 14 KOs) defends his British and Commonwealth Super-Featherweight Titles against Manchester’s Michael GomezJr (21-1, 6 KOs) in a highly-anticipated grudge match, PatMcCormack (6-0, 4 KOs) steps up as he defends his WBA Intercontinental Welterweight Title against Liverpool’s former British, Commonwealth and European Champion Robbie Davies Jr (24-5, 15 KOs), it’s a Manchester vs. Liverpool showdown as former World Title challengers Zelfa Barrett (31-2, 17 KOs) and Jazza Dickens (34-5, 14 KOs) clash for the WBA International Super-Featherweight Title, Manchester Light-Heavyweight Conner Tudsbury makes his professional debut against Belgium’s Sadaam Moamed Da Silva Caetano, Oldham’s Aqib Fiaz (12-1, 1 KO) returns at Lightweight against Malta’s Lydon Chircop (7-2, 4 KOs) over six rounds, Manchester Super-Welterweight powerhouse William Crolla (6-0, 5 KOs) faces Spain’s Ayoub Zakari (5-7-1) over six rounds and Manchester Featherweight AlfieMiddlemiss (1-0) kicks off the Before The Bell action in a four round fight with Middlesborough’s Caine Singh (1-5-2).
CATTERALL COLLIDES WITH BARBOZA JR AT CO-OP LIVE ON FEBRUARY 15
Jack Catterall will face unbeaten American Arnold Barboza Jr in a Final Eliminator for the WBO Super-Lightweight World Title, in association with Golden Boy Promotions, at Co-op Live in Manchester on Saturday February 15, live worldwide on DAZN.
Chorley’s Catterall (30-1, 13 KOs) floored Regis Prograis twice in the ninth round of their highly anticipated showdown in October on route to decisioning the former two-time Super-Lightweight World Champion to claim the WBO International crown.
That win capped a memorable 2024 for ‘El Gato’, who earlier in the year avenged the sole loss of his career against bitter rival Josh Taylor in Leeds, and a win over Barboza Jr in February will see the 31-year-old southpaw secure another shot at world honours.
California’s Barboza Jr (31-0, 11 KOs), a former WBO International and Intercontinental 140lbs Champion, outpointed Jose Carlos Ramirez over ten rounds last time out on the undercard of Gilberto Ramirez’s Unified WBA and WBO Cruiserweight World Title triumph over Chris Billam-Smith in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The 33-year-old, currently ranked at number one with the WBO, is yet to sample defeat since joining the professional ranks back in June 2013, and the Los Angeles resident is highly motivated to set up an all-American World Title clash with his compatriot Teofimo Lopez.
“I’m looking forward to fighting back in Manchester,” said Jack Catterall. “It was an unbelievable experience opening big time boxing at Co-op Live back in October. I’m looking to do it bigger and better on February 15. I’ve got a great fight in Barboza Jr. I’m glad he finally found his pen. I’m not overlooking him, but I’m ready to smash him to pieces to cement my spot for the WBO World Title. I’m geared up for this one.”
Arnold Barboza Jr said: “I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to take my skills overseas and contribute to my team’s success. I’m truly excited to do what I do best and make it a meaningful win. To the fans, thank you for your trust and support—I’m looking forward for this!”
Matchroom Sport chairman Eddie Hearn believes this will be a defining night in Jack Catterall’s career. He said: “This is absolutely huge. It is a final eliminator for the WBO World Title – and, hopefully, it could even be for the World Title if Teofimo Lopez gets out of the way. Jack should already be an undisputed World Champion. And there is no better way than to prove that he has earned his place at the very top by beating Arnold Barboza Jr in what is a fantastic fight in 140lb division.
Oscar De La Hoya, Golden Boy Chairman and CEO, said: “Arnold Barboza Jr has been the gatekeeper for so long and I feel so happy for him that he is finally getting a shot that he deserves – and, hopefully, for the World Title if Teofimo Lopez moves up a weight. It will be a great fight. I think Jack Catterall is a terrific fighter. It’s a pick-‘em fight and let’s see who wins.”
Alfie Sharman, DAZN VP Marketing, added: “We are incredibly excited to be bringing this fight night exclusively to DAZN subscribers for what is a huge premium event in the UK. Jack Catterall enjoyed a stellar 2024 with memorable wins against Josh Taylor and Regis Prograis. Now he must come through this final eliminator in his quest to land a world title shot – and it doesn’t get any bigger, or any more difficult, against the brilliant and dangerous Arnold Barboza Jr, who will be out to cause a huge upset away from home and climb up the ladder himself.”
Tickets go on sale for Fight Pass and Co-op pre-sale members at 10am on December 27, with Matchroom Priority on sale between 12-3pm on December 28. Fans can purchase tickets on December 28 from 3pm UK time.

CATTERALL VS. PROGRAIS + UNDERCARD FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport Chairman: “Welcome everyone to Manchester, and it’s a big one. Our main event is one of the best fights available at 140lbs. Jack Catterall, his third fight this calendar year after headlining in Liverpool against Jorge Linares, headlining in Leeds against Josh Taylor and now headlining against the ever-dangerous former World champion Regis Prograis at the Co-Op Live. “It’s a brilliant fight and a brilliant fight card, and we open up with an undercard that features so many young fighters that are going to be imperative to the growth and future of boxing in this country and worldwide as well.” Jack Catterall: “We spoke after the last fight and you said Eddie that we could get a World title shot in 2025, and I’ve been in the position before where I’ve been waiting on something that might not happen. So my instruction to Sam Jones and to Matchroom was that I want to fight the best and Regis was the name proposed and we jumped at it. “The chapter with Josh Taylor is done, we move on, and we’ve got a big job on Saturday. I think Regis is right in saying that his last two performances weren’t his best, so he’s in a position where he needs to turn up, and I put the pressure on myself to be in his position, he’s had his time in the sun, he’s boxed for World titles, he’s won World titles, and that’s what I want. “He probably has the better resume as I’ve yet to win a World title and he has, but I’m ready to prove that on Saturday. I’m expecting him to come with everything he’s said in the build up. We’ve seen his fights, he’s a strong fighter and will come looking for it but I’m the better boxer.” Jamie Moore: “The reason why decided to go ahead with this fight is that Regis is in the other corner, and Jack needs the best type of fighter to bring the best out of him. It was a long process over a few years where we got the chance to get to this point where he’s on the world stage and he’s able to show people what he is capable of. We were signing his praises and banging the drum for him for a long time, and thankfully he got the opportunity, but it didn’t go our way. He’s come back, he’s righted that wrong, and he deserves a World title. But it’s no good Jack just having a tick over fight, trying to get a win and waiting for that World title fight, because they’re the potential banana skins. We know how good Regis is, we know Jack has to be on his game, and that’s the reason why we decided to take the fight because we know he’ll have to be at his best. “We know the styles will blend for a great fight. People are always sleeping on Jack’s power. We know he’s not going to be a GGG, he’s not that type of fighter, but when he hits you believe me, you know about it. We have a hell of a lot of respect for Regis, it’s the reason we’re sat here now, we know how good he is, what he’s achieved, the power he possesses and the danger he brings – but that’s going to bring the best out of Jack.” Regis Prograis: “This is a fight I wanted, we were supposed to fight a long time ago but it didn’t happen for whatever reason. I felt that they didn’t;t want to fight, I think that you Eddie backed them into a corner. But it’s a big fight, the best at 140 without the belts, and I’m just feeling super calm, confident and relaxed about everything. I don’t even feel like I’m away from home to be honest, everyone has been so nice, I thought people would be more hostile and the crowd to talk shit to me, but no-one has said anything! I feel like I am back in my bag again, but we can talk, on Saturday night we’ll see, I don’t feel I know that there’s different levels to this game. Jack and I have some similar opponents, but you take Josh Taylor off of his resume and what does he have? Nothing. Take Josh from mine, and I’m still a two-time World champion. I’m going to go out and show that there’s levels and that skills pay the bills, so let’s go. “When I was a World champion it was kind of like ‘what is there left to do?’ When I don’t have the belt I’m back hungry, back on my grind, i want to get that again. My goal is to be a three-time World champion and nothing is going to get in the way of that. “I plan on doing my thing. I’m not Muhammad Ali, I don’t predict the round, if I do what I’ve been doing in the gym, I don’t want to say easy, but it shouldn’t be what people say it’s going to be, no 50-50 stuff. “Every time I fight I want to make a statement. The main thing is that I do it for legacy. Money is cool, but for me it’s for legacy, I want to be able to say I am the best at 140. I’ve done it twice and I want to do it again.” Bobby Benton: “It’s been a great camp, the atmosphere has been good. It’s been a boring camp but fun for him. Sam Jones and Jack have made a big mistake. Jack deserves a World title fight, it’s great for us, but it’s bad for them. We’re going to have a good night. “Regis is definitely back to himself. He had a couple of bad camps, and that’s part of boxing, he went through it and now he’s sharp as he ever was. “Regis is a better fighter but Jack definitely deserves a World title fight, he should be fighting for the World title on Saturday but instead he’s going to get beaten by Regis Prograis.” Reece Bellotti: “I don’t think it will be me getting KO’d, but it’s going to be a great fight. Our styles are bound to gel in that ring and it’s going to be a good tear-up. “Professional boxing is all down to your experiences, and not a lot of people mention it but moving up in weight has been a massive thing for me. For the last few fights at nine stone I was dead, people say ‘it’s only four pounds’, but that is a lot for a boxer and it’s helped me massively, and you’ll see that on Saturday night. “A ring is a ring, he’ll have the fans but they can’t fight for him. Last time I came up here I beat Aqib Fiaz, this time I’ll beat Michael and the journey continues.” Michael Gomez Jr: “We can only get a war and that’s what you are going to get, it’s as simple as that. I absolutely have the tools to beat him and stop him. “It’s the first British title fight in this new arena, so it has to be a winner from Manchester, you can’t let someone from London come up here and win, I have to win. “Someone is getting flat packed, it might be him, it might be me.” James Flint: “I believe it’s repeat on Saturday night, 110 per cent. I didn’t think he would take the rematch this soon. He is saying he didn’t want any warm up fights, if that’s the case, why wasn’t this pencilled in for the August show? But we’re here and I believe it’s going to be repeat. “There’s going to be a problem if he doesn’t bring another version isn’t there. If he doesn’t improve anywhere, it’s just going to be a win again for me, and then his career is basically over after back-to-back losses to me. He’s finished. “I’m fan-friendly and my fans follow me wherever I go, in Doncaster, when one goes to war, we all go to war. I believe it’s a KO win.” Campbell Hatton: “I’m just excited. Pressure is something that I’ve had from the very start of my career. It’s nothing new. It’s a must-win fight, but the way I’ve been performing in the gym with the new set-up, we’re coming into this with a lot of confidence. “I did a lot wrong in the first fight, as good a fight as it was, so there has been a lot we can change and adapt, and we have. “I’m expecting to stop him. I had success early last time but i was making mistakes that cost me the fight. We’ve put those mistakes right, we’ve made a few adaptations to my style, and people are going to be in for a shock. “It is must-win but I’m using that as fuel to go in and get the job done and I am more than confident that’s what i am going to do.” Pat McCormack: “I want to thank you for getting me on this show, thank my coaches for training me for this fight, I’m just ready to go. I’ve had setback after setback, but I’ve stayed in the gym, stayed dedicated, and we’re going to see on Saturday night, I can’t wait to get back in there. “I think I am on a different level to him. I’ve got to get through the test, which I’m fully confident of doing a job on him, and then we go from there and get active in 2025, get more titles and keep climbing the ladder.” Williams Andres Herrera: “I want to say thank you to Matchroom for giving me this opportunity to fight. We’ve been waiting a long time for this fight, it didn’t happen last time because my opponent got injured, but we’re back again as competitive Argentinians and we’re here to show that this is the acid test for him. “We’re Argentinians, we have big balls, and we’re going to put him in a real test on Saturday night. We always come forward and we’re going to show what we’re made of. And I want to remind you that we’re World champions.” Junaid Bostan: “I know that this guy can punch a bit but I am meant to deal with my man on Saturday and then move on to a big 2025. It’s been a frustrating year, I’ve only boxed once, but I am happy to be fighting in Manchester, I’ve got a lot of good memories here, and I’m looking to make more of them come Saturday. “A certain someone who says that they manage Ishmael Davis said that the fight isn’t agreed, but the last time I checked the circular, it’s agreed. So take it as you will on who is telling the lies there. I take it as it comes, I won’t speak ill of Ish, he’s a good guy and he did well against Josh Kelly. I know there’s a better version of him that fought Josh, he only had six days notice, so when it happens it will happen, and it will be a good fight. “I’m confident in myself against anyone you put me in with, that’s the problem, and I’m a little frustrated with it all to be honest. But what will come, will come, and I’ll show that in the new year, but first of all I’ll deal with my man.” Maico Sommariva: “I want to thank Matchroom for the opportunity. You know that Argentine fighters are really competitive and we leave everything in the ring on the night. We’re here to put on a show and we’re ready.” William Crolla: “It’s a good step-up on Saturday night but it’s one I believe I am ready for. If I do what I do in the gym, it’ll be the same treatment the last four have got, and I’m looking for the fifth stoppage in a row. “It’s the toughest fight of my career, but I get the rounds in in the gym, and that’s where the work is done, fight night is just a small part of it, where you have to look good and you’ll see big improvements again on Saturday and I believe it will be another stoppage. “I think I’ve got a fan-friendly style and it’s great to see that support growing with every fight. I just want to continue learning, stay grounded, keep taking opportunities and build a fan base in Manchester. I think it’s about time someone from Manchester starts topping bills here and I believe I’ve got everything for it to be me.” Ste Clarke: “I want to say thanks for putting on another big show, I appreciate it, I’m bringing all my fans again so I can’t wait for Saturday night, and putting on a performance. “The stable is growing, we’re all learning off each other with Stephen Smith, the gym is booming at the moment and we’re all benefitting. So as I move up the ranks, I’m going to be ready for it all. “There’s loads of domestic fights out there at Middleweight, and when the time is right I’ll be ready for it. I’ve just got to keep my eyes on the opponents right in front of me, and take it as it goes.” Joe McGrail: “The gym is flying, we’re on a KO streak at the moment and I’ll be looking to keep that going on Saturday. It’s the biggest fight of Peter’s career too and he’ll be taking heads off on December 21. “This is my last eight rounder then it’s on to ten rounders after that so I think I am ready for titles really soon.” Emily Whitworth: “I’m ready and I can’t wait. Thank you for having me on the show and my manager Kieran Farrell for not giving up. I can’t wait to put in a good performance and get my career started. “I’ve been in the gym everyday, training hard, and the postponement just gave me more time to prepare for this.” Alfie Sharman, DAZN: “It’s great to be in Manchester. It’s an unbelievable time for us at DAZN and what a fight we have ahead of us on Saturday with Jack and Regis. Jack is on a brilliant run with a great performance against Josh Taylor in May, I wish the best of luck to everyone on the card. “At DAZN, the global home of boxing which we say so often because it’s true, we have over 150 fights a year. We’ve got an unbelievable schedule and we’re announcing today an early Black Friday offer to fight fans of 50 per cent off all subscription plans in the US and up to 33 per cent off in the UK, look out for DAZN’s social media handles for more details on that today. “Why so early for Black Friday? Because we’re on an unbelievable run for fights for our business, we’ve got this fight, then we go to Philadelphia for Boots and Bam, we go onto Latino Night in Riyadh where Chris Billam-Smith faces ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez, then there’s Sunny Edwards and Galal Yafai in Birmingham; in four weeks alone that’s some incredible fights on the platform. “ |
CATTERALL: I CAN PICK HOLES IN PROGRAIS
Jack Catterall believes he can “pick holes” in former two-time WBC World Champion Regis Prograis when the Super-Lightweight rivals clash over 12 rounds in the first ever headline fight at Co-op Live in Manchester this Saturday October 26, shown live worldwide on DAZN.
The Chorley man is just days away from the biggest test of his professional career to date and is all too aware that a win over his American rival would likely lead to a World Title shot against the likes of Teofimo Lopez Jr or Liam Paro, who puts his IBF crown on the line against Richardson Hitchins in December.
Full focus remains on the task at hand against New Orleans’ ‘Rougarou’, and Catterall, who avenged his controversial loss to bitter rival Josh Taylor last time out in May, says he is hugely motivated to face an opponent that is looking to become a three-time World Champion.
“I think if you look at Regis now, his last two performances have probably been below par,” said Catterall. “I think that the Regis I’m fighting next is probably a hungry and driven Regis. That’s what I’m excited for, the fact that he’s been World Champion twice and he’s hungry to become a three-time World Champion.
“He lost his belt in his last fight so I think he’ll be super motivated for this fight to get back on track and get a win. That gives me the fire in my belly and gets me excited knowing that I’m getting a hungry and determined Regis coming to fight me in Manchester.
“I feel like a second coming now. It’s been a great ride since I signed with Matchroom. This will be my third headline fight in a UK arena in 12 months. That again is a great feeling. The 140 division is stacked with a lot of great fighters, so I find myself now fit and well, past the periods of inactivity and ready to fight and be involved in these big fights.
“That is the motivation and part of the motivation behind fighting Regis. Outside of the World Champions, he for me is the biggest fight to have. I believe a victory against him will put me right at the top of the list and ready to challenge the biggest names in the division.”
‘El Gato’ is keen to keep the momentum building after his career-best win in Yorkshire and the 31-year-old Jamie Moore-trained southpaw certainly isn’t short of confidence as he prepares to go to war with one of the biggest names in American boxing.
“Regis’s style suits me, he’s a lot slower on his feet. I think with Regis he carries a lot of power but I think my defence is too good and I think I can pick holes in him. When I beat Regis Prograis I don’t know what options are left for him. He’s had his time in the sun – two-time World Champion. I think it’s a difficult road back.
“If this turns into a dog fight, I’m there for it and I’m ready for that. No matter what I’m ready to dig deep, go to the trenches and I’m confident I’ll get my hand raised. I expect this to be a tough fight but I expect a victory.”Catterall vs. Taylor tops the first ever boxing event to take place at Co-op Live, ReeceBellotti (19-5, 4 KOs) puts his British and Commonwealth Super-Featherweight Titles on the line against Manchester’s Michael Gomez Jr (21-1, 6 KOs), Doncaster’s James Flint (14-2-2, 3 KOs) and Hyde’s Campbell Hatton (14-1, 5 KOs) meet in a must-win rematch, Sunderland Welterweight talent Pat McCormack (5-0, 4 KO) makes his long-awaited return to the ring against Argentina’s William Andres Herrera (16-2, 7 KOs) in a clash for the WBA Intercontinental Title, Rotherham Super-Welterweight Junaid Bostan (9-0, 7 KOs) takes on Argentina’s Maico Sommariva (9-4-1, 8 KOs) over eight rounds, Manchester Super-Welterweight William Crolla (5-0, 4 KOs) makes his Matchroom debut against Harrow’s Lorenzo Grasso (6-2, 1 KO), Liverpool Middleweight prospect SteClarke (4-0, 1 KO) looks to go 5-0 against Poland’s Mateusz Pawlowski (2-1, 1 KO), Liverpool Featherweight Joe McGrail (10-0, 5 KOs) meets Walsall’s Lewis Morris (8-2, 1 KO) over eight rounds and Heywood Bantamweight debutant Emily Whitworth kicks off the Before The Bell action against Hungary’s Sara Orszagi (1-2).
SUPPORTING CAST CONFIRMED FOR BLOCKBUSTER OCTOBER 26 CATTERALL VS. PROGRAIS SHOWDOWN
Ellie Scotney will defend her IBF, WBO and IBO Super-Bantamweight World Titles against mandatory challenger Mea Motu on the undercard of Jack Catterall’s blockbuster Super-Lightweight showdown with Regis Progais at Co-op Live in Manchester on Saturday October 26, shown live worldwide on DAZN.
Catford’s Scotney (9-0) captured the IBF World Title by dethroning Cherneka Johnson at OVO Arena Wembley back in June 2023 before unifying the 122 lbs division against France’s former WBO Champion Segolene Lefebvre in her last outing at Manchester Arena in April.
The 26-year-old now faces her undefeated IBF mandatory Motu (19-0, 7 KOs) – her second unbeaten opponent in a row – with the promise of further unification clashes against WBA champion Nazarena Romero and WBC ruler Yamileth Mercado should she get past the New Zealander.
Watford’s Reece Bellotti (19-5, 14 KOs) looks to continue his remarkable run of form when he defends his British and Commonwealth Super-Featherweight Titles for the second time against Manchester favourite Michael Gomez Jr (21-1, 6 KOs).
The 33-year-old’s brilliant resurgence began at the famous York Hall in April 2022 where he stopped Dean Dodge in seven rounds to pick up the Southern Area Title. Two years and four wins later ‘Bomber’ can take another step towards winning the prestigious British Title outright should he become just the second man to defeat Gomez Jr.
Hyde Super-Lightweight Campbell Hatton (14-1, 5 KOs), now training under Barry Smith at the Ben Davison Performance Centre in Harlow, Essex, jumps straight back into a rematch with Doncaster’s James Flint (14-2-2, 3 KOs), looking to avenge the first loss of his professional career.
‘Hurricane’ Hatton was soundly beaten by Flint when challenging for the Central Area 140 lbs title at the Utilita Arena Sheffield in March, but armed with a new training team, the 23-year-old Manchester City fanatic is aiming to get his career back on track by silencing his doubters.
Sunderland’s rising Welterweight star Pat McCormack (5-0, 5 KOs) returns to the ring for his first fight since July 2023 to face Argentina’s William Andres Herrera (16-3, 7 KOs) for the vacant WBA Intercontinental Title and there’s action on the card for Leeds Super-Welterweight Ishmael Davis (13-0, 6 KOs), Manchester Super-Welterweight talent WilliamCrolla (5-0, 4 KOs), Liverpool Middleweight Ste Clarke (4-0, 1 KO), Liverpool Featherweight talent Joe McGrail (10-0, 5 KOs) and Heywood Bantamweight debutant Emily Whitworth.
“I’ve been desperate to get back in the ring since I unified the division in Manchester back in April,” said Scotney. “That night was a dream come true for me and it seems like the city is becoming a second home.
“Right now all that matters is October 26 where I’m fully focused on defending what’s mine. I’m ready to prove I’m the number one in the Super-Bantamweight division.”

CATTERALL VS. PROGRAIS MOVES TO OCTOBER 26 AT CO-OP LIVE IN MANCHESTER
Jack Catterall’s eagerly-anticipated Super-Lightweight showdown with former two-time World Champion Regis Prograis will now take place on Saturday October 26 at Co-op Live in Manchester, shown live worldwide on DAZN.
The rivals had originally been set to clash later this month on August 24 before Catterall sustained an injury, but the 140lbs contenders will now raise the curtain for boxing at the UK’s newest and largest world-class arena later this year.
Chorley’s Catterall (29-1, 13 KOs) ended a two-year wait for revenge by beating bitter rival Josh Taylor in Leeds in May, outpointing the Scotsman over 12 electric rounds in front of over 11,000 fans in one of the best British bouts of the year so far.
‘El Gato’ is keen to keep the momentum building after his career-best win in Yorkshire and the 31-year-old Jamie Moore-trained talent knows he within touching distance of another shot at world honours.
New Orleans’ Prograis (29-2, 24 KOs) surrendered his WBC Super-Lightweight World Title to Devin Haney is a huge PPV showdown at Chase Center in San Francisco last December, suffering only the second loss of his career in front of a sold-out crowd of 17,000 fans.
‘Rougarou’, a two-time World Champion at 140lbs, is looking to rebuild himself as a contender after his one-sided points defeat to ‘The Dream’, and the 35-year-old is confident that a win over Catterall will push him on towards becoming a three-time World Champion.
“I’m delighted that a new date for my fight with Regis Prograis has been sorted so quickly,” said Catterall. “Big thanks to Matchroom, my team and Co-op Live for all of their hard work on this. To be the first boxer to headline at Co-op Live is going to be special and I’m really happy I’ll still get that opportunity. It was gutting having to pull out of a fight for the first time in my 30-fight career but I need to be fit and healthy going into one of the most important contests of my life. Thanks for everyone’s continues support and I’ll see you all on October 26!”

CATTERALL VS. PROGRAIS LAUNCH PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport Chairman:
“Thanks Jamie and thank you to Anthony Crolla as well, who has been responsible for some massive nights in Manchester, and wow – have we got some massive nights coming here. Not just on August 24, but I think I join with everybody to say wow, what a place and what a venue. Co-op Live is open for business in the boxing world and we’re delighted that we have been given the honour to christen this incredible place, August 24 with one of the best fights that can be made at 140lbs.
“Jack Catterall coming off that incredible victory against Josh Taylor in front of 11,000 at the Leeds Arena takes on a former World Champion Regis Prograis, coming off disappointment in defeat in a massive fight against Devin Haney. Both guys looking to recapture the World Championship in 2024. How good for boxing that two of the best in the division are fighting each other, rolling the dice to make a great fight for the fans. All live and exclusive of course on DAZN around the world.
“This venue Co-op Live, we’re doing some great business with these people. Last week of course in the Footprint Center in Phoenix – another one of their venues – 10,000 in there. Next week at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, 13,000 or 14,000 in there. We’re expecting a huge crowd on what will be a massive night of boxing on August 24.
“We are going to build an incredible card for you here of local derbies, big British names as well and of course already announced – the all-British women’s World Championship fight between Rhiannon Dixon and Terri Harper. Delighted as well to mention the recent signing of William Crolla. This is a young man who I believe can really lift Manchester boxing over the next few years and has earnt his shot at a contract with Matchroom. More big fight news coming for this card but today we focus on a thrilling fight in the 140lbs division between two guys who have been at the top for a very long time.”
Jack Catterall:
“I’m delighted. That chapter with Josh now is closed. It’s a new chapter. Before the first fight I found myself in a great position, number one in the WBO, but I was sitting on the shelf for too long. I think we understand that the division is wide open right now. There’s no immediate shot at the World Title but I didn’t want to be waiting until the back end of the year or early next year to get back in the ring, with the hopes of maybe landing a World Title fight.
“Like I said to Sam and I said to you (Eddie Hearn), I want the biggest fights. I think Regis said it, bar the World Titles this is the biggest fight in the division. I’ve had momentum, you (Eddie Hearn) have kept me active which I’m grateful for. I’m in a great position and I don’t want to be sat to the side waiting for fights to happen that might not happen. I need to strike while I’ve had the momentum.
“Regis is a two-time World Champion looking to become three. I know the winner of this fight is in a great position with you to go on and challenge for a World Title. This fight gets me up, I’m excited, it’s not far from where I live this Co-op Live arena. I’ve got everything to gain in this fight.
“I’ve been watching Regis for four or five years. I was at the fight against Taylor in 2019. I’ve watched him box in Dubai, I was in San Francisco in December so I’ve been seeing him and I know what he’s about. He’s a tough fighter and he’s earned his right – he’s a two-time World Champion. I know exactly what stands in front of me and I’m working hard. I’ve been straight back in the gym. No rest, no honeymoon, straight back to work.”
Regis Prograis:
“I feel like me and Jack is the biggest fight you can make in the division without a belt being on the line. We were actually supposed to fight a few years ago but it just never happened, and so now we’re here. I think this is the best time right now. For sure, it’s must-win. I have a goal now. Every time I get the belt I kind of just don’t care about it. Now I have a goal again. I want to be a three-time World Champion and this is the man that I have to get past. Catterall is one of the biggest names in the division right now. The 140lbs division is stacked right now. Like I said, this is the biggest fight that they can make without a belt being on the line. I’m ready to do it again in front of the crazy UK fans.”
Jamie Moore:
“Thanks for leaving me to last after that because I’ve got no f***ing idea what I’m going to say now. Activity has always been something that we’ve asked for which was key when we signed with Matchroom. We’ve got that now and I feel he’s just getting better and better.
“He’s the ultimate professional, he’s always in the gym. He’s literally just got married and he’s straight back in the gym asking for a big fight. This date came up, Regis accepted the offer that was put to him and we find ourselves in a position where you’ve got two of the best fighters outside of the World Champions fighting each other, taking a huge risk in all honesty. If Regis loses this fight then it looks like where does he go from here? Jack Catterall has put himself in a position where he should be fighting for a World Title. It just wasn’t available at this moment in time.
“We got offered Regis Prograis, a lot of people would say you’re crazy to take a risk like that. I don’t see it as big as a risk as people say it is because of my confidence in Jack Catterall. We’ve always been conscious of making sure the styles blend because Jack is that clever that sometimes it can be a hard watch because the styles don’t blend. This is certainly going to gel into a really good fight. Reigs is 35-years-old and he’s achieved so much, but I still feel like he’s got a lot left. That’s going to bring the best out in Jack. I want him to go in there knowing that he’s got to perform at his best.”
Evins Tobler:
“Well look Eddie, you’ve done it again. You’ve done it again. Before I get to particulars about the fight, we had a safe trip over here thank God. We want to thank Matchroom and you for always putting on the fights and making the best fight the best.
“I like Manchester. I don’t like a whole load of places but I like Manchester. I’m a Manchester United fan through and through. Manchester, come August 24 you’re going to come out, and I know you’re crazy fans, but this guy (Jack Catterall) has no idea what he’s up against. He (Sam Jones) says that Jack Catterall is a world class fighter; he’s not. He’s not. These two guys are too far apart.
“I guarantee you he can’t tell you the last guy Jack Catterall knocked out. Tell me who he knocked out. He didn’t beat Josh Taylor. The first fight, he won the fight – good job. But the second fight Taylor whooped his ass. I know you know.
“Jack Catterall is not on the level of a Regis Prograis and if you’re a true boxing fan you know. We got 24 knockouts. Catterall knocked out about 12 bums. You just told the great people of Manchester that your guy is the guy, and he’s not. Regis Prograis is a million steps ahead of Jack Catterall. Jack Catterall is a good fighter but he’s not a Regis Prograis. Regis has been decapitating people his whole career and Jack Catterall won’t be any different. It’s going to be a decapitation.”
Sam Jones:
“You can put any name to Jack and he would say yes to it. I’ve known Regis a while and he’s a fantastic fighter. Regis, his career would have been a bit different if he’d of got the nod against Josh Taylor at The O2 arena. It was a fantastic fight. His career would have really taken off but he’s kind of done it the hard way and he deserves a lot of respect for that. He’s a fantastic fighter and he’s a good person as well, but if he thinks he’s coming to Manchester and derailing Jack Catterall while he’s in the form of his life – he’s f***ing no chance! Absolutely.
“I know the big fella over there (Evins Tobler) who looks like he could squeeze me to death is laughing, but it’s true. This journey to the UK this time will be a happy one, and hopefully Frank Smith has put them on business class flights, but the second trip back to America is going to be a really sh*t one. His Rougarou mask is going to be scrunched up in his hand luggage and it’s going to be a depressing journey back.
“I respect Regis Prograis a hell of a lot as a fighter and I think he knows that as well, but as I say; there’s f***ing no chance. I overheard with my ears that Regis Prograis said Jack isn’t world class. I think that’s just him trying to give himself a little bit of confidence because he’s coming off a disappointing fight against Devin Haney. I believe Prograis is a lot better than what he showed in that fight. I think he’s a hell of a lot better. Devin Haney can’t knock the skin off a Devon Custard, but he was buzzing Prograis with shots.
“Jack Catterall is an underrated puncher. Trust me, he’s a strong puncher. When Reig meets him in the first round and he gets hit with a filthy sweaty horrible Chorley jab he’s going to know about it. When his ears and nose are vibrating he’s going to know he’s in it deep.”

DIXON DEFENDS WBO LIGHTWEIGHT CROWN AGAINST HARPER IN ALL-BRITISH WORLD TITLE CLASH ON AUGUST 24
Rhiannon Dixon will make the first defence of her WBO Lightweight World Title in an all-British clash with former two-weight World Champion Terri Harper on the undercard of Jack Catterall’s blockbuster Super-Lightweight showdown with Regis Prograis at Co-op Live in Manchester on Saturday August 24, shown live worldwide on DAZN.
Warrington’s Dixon (10-0, 1 KO) picked up the vacant WBO crown by outpointing Karen Elizabeth Carabajal over ten rounds on the undercard of Zelfa Barrett’s win over Jordan Gill at the AO Arena in Manchester last April – adding a World Title to her Commonwealth and European Titles at 135lbs. Denaby Main’s Harper (14-2-2, 6 KOs), a former World Champion at Super-Featherweight and Welterweight, will be looking to bounce back from her stoppage loss to WBO Super-Welterweight World Champion Sandy Ryan last time out at Sheffield Arena in March. “I’m really excited about the fight at Co-op Live in Manchester on August 24,” said Dixon. “I respect what Terri has achieved in boxing and I expect the best version her. However, I continue to get better and better and I am extremely confident in my abilities to win on August 24.” “I always enjoy a fight week and fight night in Manchester,” said Harper. “There’s always a good buzz being in the city. I’m super excited to perform in the new Co-op Live arena on such a brilliant card. Rhiannon Dixon is someone who I have a lot of respect for, she is very respectful and there’s no horrible ego with her. She’s just a genuine nice girl. I feel very fortunate to be given such a great opportunity and I feel like this fight is all or nothing for me. Becoming a three-weight World Champion would be a dream but the most important thing for me now is to get a solid win under my belt and be back on top.” About Co-op Live |
CATTERALL FACES FORMER TWO-TIME WORLD CHAMPION PROGRAIS AT THE TOP OF CO-OP LIVE’S FIRST EVER BOXING EVENT ON AUGUST 24
Jack Catterall and Regis Prograis will create history when they meet in a blockbuster Super-Lightweight clash at the top of the first ever boxing show to take place at Co-op Live in Manchester on Saturday August 24, shown live worldwide on DAZN.
Chorley’s Catterall (29-1, 13 KOs) ended a two-year wait for revenge by beating bitter rival Josh Taylor in Leeds last month, outpointing the Scotsman over 12 electric rounds in front of over 11,000 fans in one of the best British bouts of the year so far.
‘El Gato’ is keen to keep the momentum building after his career-best win in Yorkshire and the 30-year-old Jamie Moore-trained talent knows he within touching distance of another shot at world honours.
“I’ve waited around for big fights to happen before, sitting around waiting for title shots and it caused me a huge amount of inactivity,” said Catterall. “I’ll never do that again. I asked Eddie Hearn and Sam Jones for the best available fight for August 24 and as soon as they mentioned Regis Prograis I said yes straight away. We were meant to fight a while back and it fell through; but now we have the opportunity to settle it in the ring on August 24.
“I don’t want to sit on the sidelines and I’ll never do that again. Regis Prograis is a fantastic fighter and he’s coming off the back of a huge PPV World Title fight against Devin Haney. He’s a former two-time World Champion, he’s been over here to the UK before, had a life and death with Josh Taylor, and I’m looking forward to sharing the ring with such a great fighter.”
“This is a fight I’ve always wanted,” said Prograis. “We were supposed to fight a few years ago but it never materialised. Now is the perfect time. I view Jack as one of the best in the world at 140lbs. It’s a great fight because Jack is eager to become a World Champion and I’m looking to become a three-time World Champion. On top of that, I’m excited to be coming back to the UK.”
“This is a brilliant fight and I’m so happy that we are seeing the best 140lbs fighters face each other rather than just sitting around waiting for title shots,” said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. “Jack Catterall is on a great run and Regis Prograis needs to make a statement in this fight, I think it will be a thriller. I’m also delighted to give this incredible new arena its first live boxing event and it’s going to be a huge show from top to bottom August 24 – live around the world on DAZN.”
“In a few short weeks since opening our doors, Co-op Live has played host to one epic concert after another,” said Tim Leiweke, CEO, Oak View Group. “But the biggest and most expensive arena in Europe was not only built for concerts, but to host the biggest boxing events in the UK. With this kind of ambition, we had to partner with legendary promoters. Matchroom and Eddie made a commitment to put together a world class card for our first boxing event, and what a first event this will be. Co-op Live is honoured to welcome home Jack Catterall to Manchester and to host Jack and Regis for our first boxing event at Co-op Live. The building will be electric, whether you are lucky enough to be there in person or watching from around the world on DAZN.”
“We wanted to keep Jack as busy as possible and it’s hard for people to understand but there aren’t any World Title shots available at this moment in time,” said Catterall’s manager Sam Jones. “Eddie wanted to do a big show at Co-op Live – the first ever boxing event to take place at Manchester’s newest venue. It’s amazing for Jack Catterall to be the first ever boxer to headline there. We’ve gone with the best opponent available and the biggest name; and that’s Regis Prograis. The fight was going to happen a couple of years ago but it never materialised for whatever reason, but we’re here now and it’s going to be an absolute barn-stormer of a fight.”
An announcement on ticket details will be made soon.

Press Conference Notes: Josh Taylor & Jack Catterall Ready for Grudge Match
LEEDS, England (May 23, 2024) —The tagline for this fight is “Hate Runs Deep,” but for former undisputed champion Josh Taylor and top contender Jack Catterall, winning is the primary mission. More than two years after they dueled for 12 rounds in Edinburgh, Scotland, Taylor and Catterall will meet in a highly anticipated junior welterweight rematch this Saturday at First Direct Arena in Leeds, England.
Scotland’s Taylor (19-1, 13 KOs) prevailed by split decision in their first fight, while Catterall (28-1, 13 KOs) and his supporters insist he deserved the verdict and Taylor’s undisputed title. After multiple postponements, the grudge match will be settled, putting to bed two-plus years of debate.
Taylor-Catterall 2 and select undercard fights will stream live and exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+ starting at 3:15 p.m. ET/12:15 p.m. PT.
Here’s what the main event fighters and their trainers said at Thursday’s press conference.
Josh Taylor
“Look at the history of boxing. All the great fighters of the past have taken defeats and come back and won world titles again. Just because you take one defeat doesn’t mean you’re a finished fighter. I think that’s where boxing has taken a turn for the worse because when a fighter takes a loss, everyone goes, ‘Ah, he’s finished,’ and stuff like that. In the UFC, there are fighters with 20 fights and 10 losses, and they are still at the top of the game. Just because you take a loss doesn’t mean you’re a bad fighter. I still feel like I’m at the top of the game, and on Saturday, I’ll take care of business, and I’ll be back in the picture to recapture my titles.”
“The last fight was a stinker for both of us. Jack did a lot of holding and spoiling and slowing the pace down. I was very poor as well. So, I believe the two of us can be a lot better. It will be a better fight for the fans. Expect that on Saturday as well. I feel it’s going to be a great fight and a barnburner. The arena — I was in there on Monday — and, wow, I got a bit of a surprise. The fans are right on top of you, so it’s going to be a great experience and a great atmosphere in there. I’m looking forward to it.”
On Catterall predicting a stoppage between rounds 7-9
“Good. Let him think that. If he wants to do that, great. Absolutely fantastic. Music to my ears.”
“I don’t really care how I win this fight, whether it’s by points or stoppage. The way I’ve been performing in the gym, the shots I’ve been throwing and catching people with… if I catch him with these shots, it will be over. It will be devastating for him. But we’ll see what happens. It’s just a win for me.”
Joe McNally (Taylor’s trainer)
“It’s one of the biggest shows of this year, and I’m expecting a magnificent contest, a vintage Josh Taylor performance, a good victory. I just hope and pray that there is no controversy.”
“I hope they both get to show the best of their abilities and give a fantastic performance for the fans. I can see nothing but Josh Taylor turning up Saturday night and coming away with that nice victory.”
Jack Catterall
“We’ve had the delays, the setbacks, but it’s fight week. We’re here in Leeds. It’s exciting, and I’ve done all the hard work. We’re two days now from fighting, so it’s very real, and I’m very much looking forward to it.”
“We both know what stands in front of us now. We’re fighting on Saturday. All the talking is done. We’ve had the buildup. The fight is sold. Obviously, we don’t see eye to eye. I think we’re ready to make weight and fight.”
“It’s a must-win Saturday. That’s what all my energy is focused on. I don’t want to talk about what’s after this. I know you’ve got a great division at 140. There’s a lot of big fights to be made. And that’s an exciting prospect, but right now, all I can think about is beating Josh on Saturday.”
Jamie Moore (Catterall’s Trainer)
“My confidence is in Jack Catterall. I’m not really concerned with anything else because I know what he’s done. I know how he’s prepared. He’s ready to go.”
“This is what boxing is all about. There’s nothing I love more than a British rivalry.”

TAYLOR VS. CATTERALL 2 PUBLIC WORKOUT QUOTES
Hundreds of fight fans packed into Kirkgate Market this afternoon as another huge fight week ramped up a gear in Leeds ahead of the highly anticipated rematch between bitter rivals Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall at the First Direct Arena this Saturday May 25, shown live on DAZN in the UK and around the world and exclusively on ESPN+ in the U.S.
The Super-Lightweight foes, who clash over 12-rounds at the top of a stacked card in Yorkshire, were joined by fighters on the undercard, including Cheavon Clarke, Ellis Zorro, Paddy Donovan, Lewis Ritson, Gary Cully and Giorgio Visioli. Josh Taylor – Edinburgh, Scotland – 19-1, 13 KOs – fighting Jack Catterall in a 12-round Super-Lightweight contest: “We’re finally here. It’s been a long time coming. I’m looking forward to it now. I’ve had a lot of stick but I’ve never taken it personal, but I will be taking it out on Jack on Saturday night. It’s just another boxing match. Forget the last fight, forget everything else that has gone on – this is a completely new fight. New fight, new circumstances. No belt on the line. Yes, there’s some beef there but listen, I’m a consummate professional and I’m enjoying fight week. I can’t wait to get in there on Saturday. “We’re taking him more seriously for a start. That was the biggest mistake I ever made. The first lesson in the art of warfare is never underestimate your opponent, and that’s what I done last time massively. I almost paid the price for it. I’m not doing that this time. He gave me a tough fight last time and I had to dig deep. I know what I’ve got in front of me now and I know the threat that is there now so I’m taking it seriously. I’ve made sure that I’ve covered all bases in training camp this time and I’m feeling good.” Jack Catterall – Chorley, England – 28-1, 13 KOs – fighting Josh Taylor in a 12-round Super-Lightweight contest: “Ultimately, the public have been banging on about the rematch, the boxings fans, everyone was asking me about it every day of the week. In the back of my mind I knew this fight was eventually going to happen, but we’re here now. Weight is good, everything is good. I take confidence from how hard I have worked in the gym. For me, these next couple of days are about being selfish, spending time with my team, switching off and when it’s time to go to work in the dressing room I’ll flick that switch and we’ll be ready. “We saw each other last night at the First Face Off and there wasn’t a word spoken from him. We’ll see, it might change as he’s making weight and I’m making weight at the weigh-in on Friday, but right now he’s not got much to say. I think we’re both focused on the job. For me it’s personal with Josh. It’s a fight that I believe I won. I’m excited to put that right. I still have goals and aspirations of becoming a World Champion, but one step at a time. We’ve got a big fight on Saturday and that’s all I’m focused on.” Cheavon Clarke – Gravesend, England – 8-0, 6 KOs – fighting Ellis Zorro for the vacant British Cruiserweight Title: “The whole journey has been important, it’s just that at this point I get to shine a light on the people that have helped me to get here. I suppose in that aspect, it is an important chapter of my career. It would be great to win the British Title. I would be making history, I’d be the first person in my family to win to get it, second person from Kent and Gravesend to get it behind Harry Dhami – the legend himself. “My business it to go in there and do what Chev does – apply my trade and entertain as I usually do. I’m just taking it a fight at a time. I dedicate my life to it like I love it. It’s producing results. Keep doing what I do and keep levelling up. The most motivating part of it is for those who helped me on my way up to look at me and say, ‘you know what – he’s not changed. He’s developed but he’s not changed as a person. That to me is very important, because it doesn’t matter where I get in life, I’ll always be that little Chev that they knew.” Gary Cully – Naas, Ireland – 17-1, 10 KOs – fighting Francesco Patera for the vacant WBA Continental Lightweight Title: “Coming back last time out, the whole of fight week Eddie was putting lots of emphasis on my career being on the line. I was being built into being this next superstar in Ireland and the next big thing and stuff like that. One loss can have a massive effect on your career but the same as one win can. I’m very aware of that. The fact that I came back, got the win against Reece Mould, I was happy. This fight here on Saturday night can put me in line again for a World Title opportunity. I think the winner probably goes on to a World Title Eliminator next or some sort of big fight. “One win and one loss in boxing, and it can change very quickly. I’ve got my win back and I’m ready to put on a big performance on Saturday night and move onto my ultimate goal of becoming a World Champion. Francesco Patera is a high level fighter. That’s why I wanted the fight with him because I want to challenge myself. He’s a test for me – two-time European Champion. I think I’ll pass the test with flying colours. I believe I’m a lot more skilful than him. My boxing IQ is a lot higher than his is. He’s very experienced, like I say he’s been around the block a number of times but I believe my skills will shine through and I’ll show what I’m about on Saturday night.” Paddy Donovan – Limerick, Ireland – 13-0, 10 KOs – defending his WBA Continental Welterweight Title against Lewis Ritson: “You can’t take away Lewis Ritson’s achievements, the fights he has under his belt and the experience he brings to the table. I’m sure he’ll be itching to get in there. These are the kind of fights in his career where he needs to get up for it. He knows that I’m going to be an extremely tough task for him. At this stage of his career I’m sure he’ll be ready. I’m excited. Eddie is known for putting some of the best fighters in the world together and putting on the best cards. It’s a great fight on paper. Ritson is a hell of a fighter and I’m in great shape. I’m ready to put on an amazing show here in Leeds. “My last fight was a potential banana slip. He was a tough fighter. He was a durable fighter but a fighter that you’re supposed to beat. I got illness and things like that in my training camp. I’m not making excuses. This time round I’ve had great preparation. Me and Andy have spent more time together than we ever have. We’ve been working on new specific things for Ritson in the gym. You’re going to see the best Paddy Donavan possible on Saturday night.” Taylor vs. Catterall 2 tops a huge night of action in Leeds, Gravesend powerhouse Cheavon Clarke (8-0, 6 KOs) takes on Bromley’s Ellis Zorro (17-1, 7 KOs) for the vacant British Cruiserweight Title, Limerick’s fast rising Welterweight talent Paddy Donovan (13-0, 10 KOs) meets Forest Hall’s former British Champion Lewis Ritson (23-3, 13 KOs) for the WBA Continental Title, Naas Lightweight star Gary Cully (17-1, 10 KOs) fights Belgium’s former European Champion Francesco Patera (29-4, 11 KOs) for the WBA Continental Title, Aldershot Lightweight prospect Giorgio Visioli (2-0, 2 KOs) looks to make it three knockouts from three fights when he takes on Austria’s Sergio Odabai (6-3-1, 3 KOs) over six rounds, Billericay Middleweight George Liddard (6-0, 3 KOs) squares off with Limerick’s Graham McCormack (9-3-1, 1 KO) over eight rounds and Newham Super-Welterweight Leli Buttigieg (3-0, 1 KO) kicks off the Before The Bell action against Belgium’s Anas Isarti (4-2). |

CATTERALL: ONCE I BEAT JOSH I’LL GO ON AND WIN A WORLD TITLE
Jack Catterall believes that a win over arch nemesis Josh Taylor at the First Direct Arena in Leeds this Saturday will springboard him towards a long-awaited World Title shot in the competitive Super-Lightweight division.
The bitter rivals finally rematch in a huge showdown this weekend, shown live on DAZN in the UK and around the world and exclusively on ESPN+ in the U.S., and Chorley’s Catterall (28-1, 13 KOs) says that a comprehensive win over former undisputed 140lbs ruler Taylor will prove that he belongs on the big stage.
“I think we’ve had two years since the fight where I’ve matured in and out of the ring,” said Catterall. “I’ve been doing a lot of developing and I think it’s my time now to prove that I do belong in these big fights. Once I beat Josh I’ll go on and win a World Title.
“I want to prove myself and fight the best, if this is the fight and victory that I need to put myself one step closer to the World Titles, then game on. I want to be involved in big fights and this is a big fight. It would have been the cherry on top if we could have got it for a World Title, I have ambitions to go on and win a World Title, but this fight is worthy of a World Title, and it gets me up for it.”
The enemies have been embroiled in a heated war of words since February 2022 when they met on an unforgettable night at The OVO Hydro Arena in Glasgow. Intense debate has raged in the aftermath of their first fight, when Taylor protected his unbeaten record with a hugely controversial split decision points win.
“Do I think Josh Taylor ever avoided me? Of course. Josh doesn’t want to fight me. Since the first fight we’ve had the fight rescheduled maybe four times now. He’s looking for any way out. He’s in a position where he has to fight me. I think he’s been forced into this position. When you look at the landscape, the fights that are there and the fights that aren’t there, this fight makes a lot of sense. Do I think he wants it? No. Does he have to take it? Yes.
“He didn’t want this, he had great plans to go to 147 and challenge for World Titles up there. He cemented 140 but unfortunately for him, his biggest fight is me. I know that he’s my biggest fight, I can accept that, but for him I think it’s frustrating that he can’t go up and fight Crawford etc, because it stinks still so he’s got to fight me.”
In what is one of the most eagerly anticipated rematches in modern British boxing history, the fierce rivals will go head-to-head once more in a 12-round Super-Lightweight contest on neutral territory – and after over two years of waiting, Catterall admits that he can’t wait to get his hands on Taylor again.
“He’s not my type of person,” said Catterall. “I don’t think we would go out for a coffee or a beer. I just don’t like him. I can’t wait to stop talking about him. I want to beat him in every way possible. I want to make it slow and painful, but I also want to knock him out cold. He should enjoy this, it’s probably going to be his last fight. There’s no room to hide Josh. Rival, enemy – Josh Taylor is that to me. The judges can’t save him. I can’t f***ing wait.”
Taylor vs. Catterall 2 tops a huge night of action in Leeds, Gravesend powerhouse Cheavon Clarke (8-0, 6 KOs) takes on Bromley’s Ellis Zorro (17-1, 7 KOs) for the vacant British Cruiserweight Title, Limerick’s fast rising Welterweight talent Paddy Donovan (13-0, 10 KOs) meets Forest Hall’s former British Champion Lewis Ritson (23-3, 13 KOs) for the WBA Continental Title, Naas Lightweight star Gary Cully (17-1, 10 KOs) fights Belgium’s former European Champion Francesco Patera (29-4, 11 KOs) for the WBA Continental Title, Aldershot Lightweight prospect Giorgio Visioli (2-0, 2 KOs) looks to make it three knockouts from three fights when he takes on Austria’s Sergio Odabai (6-3-1, 3 KOs) over six rounds, Billericay Middleweight George Liddard (6-0, 3 KOs) squares off with Limerick’s Graham McCormack (9-3-1, 1 KO) over eight rounds and Newham Super-Welterweight Leli Buttigieg (3-0, 1 KO) kicks off the Before The Bell action against Belgium’s Anas Isarti (4-2).

BLOCKBUSTER TAYLOR VS. CATTERALL REMATCH SELLS OUT IN ONE DAY
The highly anticipated rematch between bitter rivals Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall taking place at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on Saturday April 27, shown live on DAZN in the UK and around the world and exclusively on ESPN+ in the U.S., has sold out in less than a day after going on sale to the general public at midday.
The fierce rivals reignited their feud at two fiery press conferences in Edinburgh and Manchester earlier this week before concluding their busy press tour in the Capital on Wednesday, filming an unmissable Face Off – to be released on the DAZN and Matchroom Boxing YouTube platforms soon – and trading verbal blows on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan show. Taylor and Catterall have been embroiled in a heated war of words since February 2022 when they met on an unforgettable night at The OVO Hydro Arena in Glasgow for Taylor’s Undisputed Super-Lightweight World Title. “I’m so grateful for all of the support,” said Catterall. “I appreciate all the fans spending their hard-earned money to see me beat Josh Taylor on April 27 in Leeds. I know what lies ahead of me. As much as we have the press conferences and the weigh-in, I have a job to do on April 27. I’m preparing for the best of Josh Taylor, so when I beat him and do it convincingly, I can move on with my career. Josh, you are finished after this fight. In nine weeks’ time, we get to put him to bed.” Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn added: “What an incredible response for an unmissable all-British grudge match. The First Direct Arena in Leeds is completely sold out. The controversy of the first fight will be settled in an unbelievable night on April 27, live and exclusive on DAZN in the UK and around the world, part of your subscription on the global home of boxing.” |
TAYLOR VS. CATTERALL 2 MANCHESTER PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport Chairman:
“Welcome to Manchester for part two of a slightly lively press conference ahead of the British fight of the year, the rematch between Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall, April 27 in Leeds. We have a night that you are not going to forget.
“The controversy of the first fight will be settled in an unbelievable night live and exclusive on DAZN around the world, part of your subscription on the global home of boxing.”Josh Taylor:
“I’m looking forward to getting this fight done. The first one is done, he couldn’t beat me the first time and he certainly won’t beat me this time, so I’m looking forward to it.
“It’s been a long two years coming. We tried to get the fight done straight away and it never happened, the mandatory then came in. But we’re here now, there’s no point in keeping on talking about what happened, we’re going to settle the score on April 27.You need to have a word with your man, that’s three times he’s tried to put his hands on me, he’s meant to be a professional athlete. Keep your hands to yourself you little rat.
“It is must-win, it’s a crossroads fight for us both, when I beat him this time again, he’s got nowhere to go. His biggest night is me and when I beat him again, he’ll have nowhere to go and he’ll retire without a prime, with no belts and he’ll never be a World champion.
“You’re in the wrong game if you don’t believe in yourself, so of course he’ll think that, but he’s never knocked anyone out in his life, not anyone credible.
“On April 27, I end Jack Catterall’s career, one that he never got going, and he’ll never be a World champion.”
Joe McNally:
“I’m 100 per cent confident in Josh. the first fight was a cracker and I just hope that we get the opportunity for Josh to showcase his skills, Jack with his counter-punching and we have the right official, so there’s no holding and clinching and they let the fight flow. If we get that, we’ll get a good fight and we’ll be in for a good night.
“We’re in professional boxing, small gloves, anyone can be knocked out, but Jack isn’t a knockout puncher and that’s a fact. He couldn’t get an old, shot Jorge Linares out of there, so to think he’s going to get Josh out of there? Not a chance. I just hope he performs and he’s ready because he’s with a fantastic team, because Josh will be ready, may the best man win and we’re really confident.
“There were a few things that needed addressing in the camp with Teofimo, I personally think we shouldn’t have gone ahead with the fight off the injury that he had. But it was one of those fights that a round here or there, we wouldn’t be sitting here right now, he’d be fighting a Devin Haney or Gervonta Davis. We never got the decision so we’re sitting here because of Josh, not Jack, that’s a fact. I’m excited for it and to go into this one all guns blazing.”Tom Grant:
“This is what it’s about, these domestic dust-up are what the fans come out for. All that matters is what happens on April 27 now, and that is that Josh Taylor is going to beat Jack Catterall on April 27 and all these people are going to struggle watching it.”
Jack Catterall:
“I want to thank everybody that has come out today. It’s an exciting fights, it gets the juices flowing, it’s been talked about for the last two years and it’s the same for Josh, everyone always asking when the rematch is, so it’s good to have the rematch locked in, and I’m ready to settle it.
“You know what it is, they’ve said it’s the England vs. Scotland heritage, but it’s more of me just fighting a pr*ck. He’s just not a nice person. That’s it.
“I know what lies ahead of me. As much as we have the press conferences and the weigh-ins, I have a job to do on April 27. I’m preparing for the best of Josh Taylor, so when I beat him and do it convincingly, I can move on with my career.
“I think he’s there to be beaten and I’ve got his number, and it’s only a matter of time before he touches the canvas again. Can we get some more tickets for the fight Eddie, please? We’ve had a great response and that’s expected with a big domestic fight, so I’m very grateful for everyone’s support.
“Josh, you are finished after this fight. In nine weeks’ time, we get to put him to bed.”
Jamie Moore:
“I’ve always been a big believer in Jack, I’ve always said the day that he came into our gym that he would be a World champion. I’ve just done loads of interviews and basically said the same thing, this is such a good fight because it’s been created by that narrative. It was a controversial decision in the first fight, and the vast majority thought Jack won. The two years in between has created a better story and made people more interested in it now than when it first should have taken place six months afterwards.
“You have kept Jack busy, he’s active and that’s the main thing that’s not been good for him over the last five years. He’s always in the gym. Josh has had that one loss, but I don’t buy into the fact that he’s on the slide because he’s lost to Teofimo Lopez because he’s an unbelievable fighter. So, we’re going into the fight knowing we’re going to get the best version of Josh Taylor because it’s such a grudge match and we’re going to train hard for it.
“The first fight is irrelevant now, all that matters is what happens on April 27.”Sam Jones:
“Yesterday we were in the great city of Edinburgh, and it is a great city, but it’s not a patch on Chorley. I didn’t hear what Tom said yesterday, he mentioned Ben Shalom for some reason, but they have a bit in common, they both got the charisma of the weather outside.
“It’s a fantastic fight, we’ve got two of the best trainers in the country up here today, all I want is for Josh not to make any excuses. He demanded it to be at 140lbs, I think that is a ready-made excuse right there, but it’s just a fantastic fight, British boxing needs rivalries like this, with two great fighter, one former undisputed champion and one guy that should have been undisputed, and it’s going to be a great fight, and as I said yesterday, Jack Catterall is going to whoop Josh Taylor on April 27.”

TAYLOR VS. CATTERALL 2 EDINBURGH PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport Chairman:
“Welcome to a packed Intercontinental here in Edinburgh, where we’ve had to turn people away, we’re blown away by the attendance. This has got a real old school feel about it, the good old days of real British grudge matches. Nearly two years ago to the day which will be April 27, we saw the fight for the undisputed championship. Some say the most controversial fight in the history of British boxing. Sometimes these fights take time to make. The hatred runs deep is the slogan for this fight and that’s why it’s taken two years to get these two great fighters together. Times have changed, their careers have changed, but the rivalry continues, and I cannot wait for this huge night, April 27, the Leeds Arena and live on DAZN around the world. “We wanted to give the DAZN subscribers value for money, make no mistake, this is a pay-per-view fight, and back in the day I would have been lapping it up. But to give it to DAZN subscribers as part of your subscription, is unbelievable value for fight fans and part of a huge schedule on DAZN.” (Matchroom interview) “You talk about bringing two guys together in one of the biggest fights in boxing, one of the biggest fights in British boxing history, with this kind of hatred, you are going to see that. You can try to keep people as calm as you like, but with two years of personal attacks from fans and both sides, this is just what is on the line and it’s going to spill over. “I’ve come late to the party, but I’ve seen it first-hand, Scott Quigg and Carl Frampton was probably the closest thing to this, where you had Joe Gallagher and Shane McGuigan, now you have Sam Jones, Top Rank, Matchroom, Josh and Jack. And at some point, Josh probably thought, ‘I’ve had enough of this, I’m not giving him the shot, I’m World champion, I won the fight, I’m moving on’. Whereas really, this fight should have happened instantly. It was so big and it’s still so big, April 27, Leeds is going to be packed, the whole of the UK will be watching this fight, the build-up is going to be epic, we just need to stay a little bit calm. “There’s a lot of talk about these mega-fights going to the Middle East and Saudi Arabia are doing an incredible job of delivering the fights that sometimes we’re not getting to see. But we must make sure that the big all-British fights happen in this country, and this is a great example of a fight that everyone else wanted to do as a pay-per-view, DAZN stepped up and said ‘no, it’s part of your subscription’. That’s massive for us, massive for DAZN but massive for British boxing because this has got an old school feel to it. The multi-city press tour, the noise from the crowd, this is Frampton-Quigg, this is Haye-Bellew, Froch-Groves, those kinds of rivalries and they made British boxing what it is. “It’s an interesting on who is favourite. Jack is coming in off two wins and looked good, Josh is coming in off a defeat., albeit to Teofimo Lopez. There is a suggestion that Josh might be coming towards the end of his career, but you know he’s going to be up for this fight, if you can’t get up for this fight, you aren’t going to get up for any fight. After today and everything that has happened in two years, the best Josh Taylor will be there on April 27, and I think the best Jack Catterall will be there too because this is must-win for both. This isn’t the undisputed championship, this is career-defining, it could be career ending for the loser. “After today, after tomorrow, after the build-up, trust me, this is going to be huge on April 27. When that first bell goes, the anticipation from 12,000 in Leeds, the millions watching around the world, it’s what we want and it’s putting British boxing back on the map. “You still want that face-off moment, let’s be honest, this is the fight game, this is prize fighting. I want people to look into the whites of their eyes and just show me how much you want it. Hate runs deep, show me the hate, give me a build-up. “When we made the move to DAZN we made it for many reasons, but one was that we felt the pressure to do too many pay-per-view fights. We wanted to bring PPV fights as part of your subscription, what DAZN are offering right now is unrivalled globally. We have come from a tremendous show in Oaxaca, this weekend we’re in Orlando for Edgar Berlanga, coming up there’s Joshua-Ngannou, Fury-Usyk, Haney-Garcia, the fights are endless. It’s every single week, but you need the big pay-per-view fights as part of the subscription, it’s taken its time, we’ve had a lot of fights fall by the wayside, Joshua against Whyte, Benn against Eubank Jr, but now we’ve got Taylor-Catterall.” Josh Taylor: “It’s going to be a great night. It’s going to be action-packed. He says he’s coming to knock me out, he’s never knocked anyone out in his life. So, we’ll see what happens, I can’t wait for it, it’s going to be class. “I don’t hate anyone, but I don’t like this guy and I can’t wait to smash his brains in, what little brains he’s got. “This is about me and Jack. He’s had three promoters in two years, we went to get the fight done straight away, I picked up the injury which was a bad one and took a long time to get over it, and Jack took another fight. I took my mandatory at Madison Square Garden; Jack fought a nobody and then a 40-year-old and still couldn’t put him away. “We’re here now and I’m looking forward to it. It’s kind of a crossroads fight. It’s evident that in my last two fights I haven’t been great, so i have a point to prove, I need to be back to my best and win this fight to keep my career on the go, so it’s a big fight. “The last time his tactics were to spoil and hold and steal the fight which is what he tried to do, and the judges didn’t like it, so if he comes to fight, great, the referee this time doesn’t allow the holding. You lost, why don’t you go and phone the police again? Write a letter to your MP again, you grass.” (Matchroom interview) “He’s riled up, he tried to put his hands on me again, he’s trying to wind me up, but he hasn’t got the brains to wind me up. It wasn’t about me getting the abuse but my family getting it, some guys in the media like talkSPORT started mentioning corruption and all that sort of stuff, that’s when the nature of the abuse changed. It was threats to my wife, her business address got put online, threats of violence and my little sister was getting it too. I kept my mouth shut after the fight for a couple of months. I said a couple of things back to a couple of people and suddenly, I’m the asshole. You can’t win. But when the family start getting involved, it’s a different kettle of fish, say what you want to me all day long, but when it’s family, it’s out of order. “I’ve not really watched the first fight because I know I was so crap, it was unbelievable, it wasn’t me. I’ve watched Jack a few times in other fights, and he doesn’t do anything different in any of his fights. So, I know what to expect, if he wants to come and fight this time, great, because then hopefully we don’t get a referee that allows the constant holding and spoiling, slowing the pace down and all that. Because that ruined it the last time. We were on the floor, we fell three or four times, and it was a crap fight for people to watch. “I could retire today and have had a career one in 65 million, because I’m the only undisputed champion in the four-belt era in the UK. I could be happy, but this fight, I’m right up for. Forget titles, championships, belts, I just want to fight this guy, and I’m up for it in training and enjoying it. The ambition and hunger are there. There are bragging rights, it’s right up there and I can’t wait. “After the Jose Ramirez fight there was talks of moving up to Welterweight and becoming a two-weight World champion, facing Terence Crawford and that kind of stuff, and I was excited by that and up for it, instead of looking at what was right in front of me, the threat that was right there, that was a mistake I made and I won’t be doing that again for sure. “I can’t wait for Manchester tomorrow. It’s quite convenient that it was 1.30pm here in Edinburgh and 5.30pm tomorrow there when everyone has finished work, a nice sneaky trick there. Sam makes it all about him, I’ve never met such a fame-hungry guy in my life. “It’s a Josh Taylor win, whether on points or stoppage. I’m very confident of getting him out of there, especially the way he’s acting, trying to be all aggressive, that plays into my hands, if he comes like that he gets knocked out.” Tom Grant: “Without this becoming the Sam Jones show, I just want to thank Matchroom, Top Rank, DAZN and ESPN for making this happen. A lot of hard work has gone into it from a lot of different people, a lot of moving parts, and we’re thrilled it’s all sorted now. It has been a long time coming, through no fault of Josh’s. Jack will attest that I went to see him just after the first fight to see if we could make it happen, Josh gave up a number of his mandatory defences to see if he could pursue this fight. It didn’t happen, and act of God where Josh picked up an injury, but we’re back here now and I am glad it’s all sorted. “It’s the side of boxing that not a lot of people get to see. I’m not sure that Sam did get Josh more money, I think Josh commands his own fee, but it’s by the by, we’re here now. As much as this fight is an opportunity for redemption for Jack, perhaps justifiably, it’s an opportunity for retribution for Josh, because he’s had a lot of shit over a prolonged period of time, particularly directed at his family, and any man in this room, if they suffered the vitriol that his wife and his sister has suffered, they would feel a certain way about it. This is the opportunity for Josh to put it right.” Jack Catterall: “It’s been a long time coming. I’m excited now, it feels real being here today. I got a warm welcome on the way in, but they’ve obviously changed now, but I am excited, we’ve finally caught him. I don’t believe he wanted to fight me, but he’s here now, he’s showed up and I’m going to smash his head in on April 27. “Two years on I’ve stayed in the gym, I’ve picked up two victories since then, he went to New York and got smashed and I believe he’s on the decline and I am going to capitalize on it and put him to bed. “I’ve never ducked a challenge in my life, I understand that this is a big fight, it’s going to put me in the picture for bigger fights, but I am fully focused on April 27, and I can’t wait to get in there.” (Matchroom interview) “I’ve not bumped into him or seen him; he’s been in hiding for two years. He came out today, he didn’t look too clever, but the juices are flowing and I’m excited for this. “In the immediate aftermath I thought that the rematch wouldn’t happen, but then over the last two years, it was still being talked about and people were constantly asking me ‘when’s the rematch?’ And he would be getting the same, so ultimately, I always felt that it would happen. “He didn’t want this, he had great plans to go to 147lbs and challenge for World titles up there. He cemented 140 but unfortunately for him, his biggest fight is me. I know that he’s my biggest fight, I can accept that, but for him I think it’s frustrating that he can’t go up and fight Crawford etc, because it stinks still so he’s got to fight me. “I want to prove myself and fight the best, if this is the fight and victory that I need to put myself one step closer to the world titles, then game on. I want to be involved in big fights and this is a big fight. It would have been the cherry on top if we could have got it for a World title, I have ambitions to go on and win a World title, but this fight is worthy of a World title, and it gets me up for it. “We’re going into round 13, we’ve shared the ring, when you have been in the ring with someone whether it’s sparring or a fight, you get a feel for that person. You have to look at the landscape, the fight was two years ago, we’ve both aged two years, I’ve had two wins, he’s had the loss against Lopez, it’s a different fight. I’m going in there feeling that I’m still getting better, I don’t know if we can same the same about him. “I don’t gamble, but in my head I am the favourite. I’m not as emotionally invested as Josh is, I want to go in there and knock him out, do everything in my power to finish him. If that doesn’t come, I’ll beat him from pillar to post for 12 rounds. “Credit to the fans today for turning out, it’s nice to see the fans turn out and support.” Sam Jones: “It’s been torturous to try to get this fight done. I have worked my nuts off, day in, day out, to get this fight. I got Jack more money for the fight, his lawyer will tell you, I’ve played a very big role in this fight. We’re here now,. It’s a massive, massive fight and we’re going to get an all-British classic. I think Jack has got Josh Taylor’s number seven days a week and twice on Sunday. It’s just a fact, you can boo all you want. We’re sat here because Jack beat him the first time. Josh is a fantastic fighter, the last time I was in Edinburgh was when Josh won his Commonwealth title against Dave Ryan, I’ve always given him his props, he’s a fantastic fighter that’s done things the hard way in boxing. But ultimately, he should have three defeats on his record, Regis Prograis beat him, Jack definitely beat him, and Teofimo Lopez most certainly beat him. It’s a fact. Getting Josh i the ring was very, very difficult, he didn’t want to box, he didn’t want to box in London, he wanted a massive ice skating rink for the ring, a 22 foot ring, he didn’t want to box in Manchester, we’re finally here, we’ve caught him in a net, and Jack Catterall is whooping him again on April 27.” Alfie Sharman, VP DAZN: “Thanks for everyone for coming today, it’s great to be here in Edinburgh. What a fight we have on DAZN on April 27, I can feel the tension up here and there’s a fantastic atmosphere in the room. The fight poster sums this one up perfectly, there is bad blood, there are scores to settle. Josh is one of if not the greatest Scottish fighter of all time, Jack was so close to defeating Josh before and has had an incredible run of fights since that night. “This fight slots into an unmatched schedule on DAZN, there are dozens of great fights coming up and DAZN was today confirmed as the global host broadcaster of Anthony Joshua vs. Francis Ngannou on March 8. We have Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia, Tyson Fury vs. Oleksandr Usyk, to name just a few, and these guys on April 27, further cementing DAZN as the global home of boxing and we’re incredibly proud to be giving this fight as part of your subscription to all DAZN subscribers around the world.” |
BITTER RIVALS JOSH TAYLOR AND JACK CATTERALL SET FORHUGE REMATCH ON APRIL 27
LEEDS, England (Feb. 15, 2024) — After more than two years of waiting, bitter rivals Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall will finally meet in a hugely anticipated rematch at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on Saturday, April 27, shown live on DAZN in the UK and around the world and exclusively on ESPN+ in the U.S.
The enemies have been embroiled in a heated war of words since February 2022 when they met on an unforgettable night at The OVO Hydro Arena in Glasgow for Taylor’s undisputed junior welterweight world title.
Intense debate has raged in the aftermath of their first fight, when Scotland’s Taylor (19-1, 13 KOs) protected his unbeaten record with a hugely controversial split decision win to retain his crown.
During a pulsating battle, Taylor was cut twice by the left eye and was put down by Catterall in the 8th round before he was deducted one point in the 11th for punching after the bell. Catterall, meanwhile, was deducted one point for holding in the 10th.
Chorley’s ‘El Gato’ (28-1, 13 KOs) appeared to outbox Taylor for long periods but ultimately tasted defeat for the first time in his career after Taylor clung onto his titles. The decision caused outrage among some boxing fans and the two have been at loggerheads ever since.
Following his clash with Catterall, ‘The Tartan Tornado’ relinquished his WBC, IBF and WBA world titles due to pending mandatory orders – and then lost his WBO crown to a resurgent Teofimo Lopez in New York City last June.
Catterall ended a 15-month ring absence by widely outpointing Irishman Darragh Foley over ten-rounds at the Manchester’s AO Arena in May 2023 before sending multi-weight world champion Jorge Linares into retirement after dominating the Venezuelan legend over 12 rounds in Liverpool last October.
In what is one of the most eagerly anticipated rematches in modern British boxing history, the fierce rivals will go head-to-head once more in a 12-round junior welterweight contest on neutral territory – with plenty of bad blood and animosity guaranteed in a blockbuster build-up.
“I’ve never run from anyone in my life, especially not Jack Catterall,” Taylor said. “He has spent the last two years running from promoter to promoter while living off my name. Jack should be careful what he wishes for because he’s getting battered on April 27. I am going to enjoy every second of this. See you soon, Jack.”
“I’ve wanted this fight since the moment the scorecards got read out in Glasgow,” Catterall said . “A few people say ‘move on Jack’, and that’s easy to say to when you’re not in my position. I get asked every day of my life multiple times a day, ‘when are you fighting Taylor again?’. This isn’t about belts, this is personal to me, and I can’t wait to get my hands on him. I don’t like him, I don’t respect him and on April 27 I’m going to end him.”
“I’m so happy to get this fight made,” said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. “British boxing has been crying out for a big fight and now we look to settling the score of one of the most bitter rivalries in the sport. It will be nearly 2 years to the day since their controversial ndisputed fight and not a day has past where opinion and debate has not ensued. The pair have engaged in a back and forth full of hatred and now the time has come to finally meet again in Leeds on April 27. Despite the offers to stage this fight on PPV, I am proud that Matchroom and DAZN have stepped up make this fight available to subscribers as part of their subscription and I can’t wait for the intense build up and a huge event on April 27.”
“This is the ultimate grudge match between two of the world’s top 140-pounders,” said Top Rank Chairman Bob Arum. “These two warriors will settle the score in front of what I’m sure will be an incredible crowd in Leeds. If you look at Josh Taylor’s career, he has never, ever backed down from a challenge, and he will be in peak form on April 27.”
An announcement on ticket details will follow soon.
