Munguia decisions Inoue to retain Jr. Middle crown

Jaime Munguia won a 12-round unanimous decision over unheralded, but tough as nails challenger Takeshi Inoue to retain the WBO Junior Middleweight championship at The Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

In round three, Inoue was cut over his left eye from an accidental headbutt.  That did not dissuade the challenger as he put his head down and came forward to throw and land some hard overhand rights.  That style proved to be exciting but not an effective way to evade crunching body shots from Maunguia,  as the champion pounded away at the flanks of the incoming challenger.

There were several instances of Munguia looking like he would have Inoue in trouble with vicious combination, but Japanese visitor was able to land flush right hands on the exposed face of Munguia.

Munguia, 153.2 lbs of Tijuana, MEX is 32-0.  Inoue, 153.6 lbs of Tokyo is 13-1-1.

Munguia seized control in  the late rounds as he took over the 2nd half of the fight and won by (too) wide margins of 120-108 twice and 119-109.

Xu Can wrestled the WBA Featherweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Jesus Rojas.

The two traded a close-quarters for the entire fight, with Can landing hard combinations.  Rojas would continuously fire back by landing ripping combination that would snap the head back of the challenger.  The fight was non-stop punching and landing, and it was a close fight.  Definitely closer then the 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112 tallies that the three ringside officials voted on.

Can, 125.6 lbs of Kumming, CHN is 16-2-2.  Rojas, 126 lbs of Caguas, PR is 26-3-2.

Vergil Ortiz, Jr. kept his perfect stoppage streak alive by stopping Jesus Valdez after five rounds due to cuts.

Valdez suffered a cut over his right eye, and the bout was stopped.

Ortiz, 142 lbs of Dallas, TX is now 12-0 12 knockouts.  Valdez, 143.6 lbs of Huatabampo, MEX is 23-5-1.

Alex Rincon won a six-round unanimous decision over Jeremy Ramos in a junior middleweight bout.

In round six, Ramos started bleeding from his nose.

Rincon, 153.3 lbs of Dallas, TX won by scores of 60-54, 59-55 and 58-56, and is now 6-0.  Ramos, 152.8 lbs of Bayamon, PR is 10-6.

Alberto Melin stopped Edgar Ortega in the final scheduled round of their ten-round super bantamweight bout.

Melian dropped Ortego in the final frame with a perfect left hook.  Melian jumped on Ortega, and landed a huge assault of punches on the ropes, and the bout was stopped at 1:33.

Melian, 121.4 lbs of Buenos Aires, ARG is 4-0 with three knockouts.  Ortega, 122 lbs of Mexicali, MEX is 10-2-2.

George Rincon stopped Emmanuel Valadez in round one of their scheduled six-round super lightweight bout.

In round one, Rincon dropped Valadez to the canvas.   Rincon was all over Valadez, and the fight was stopped after a huge barrage of punches from Rincon at 1:36.

Rincon, 139.6 lbs of Dallas is 6-0 with three knockouts.  Valdez, 139.6 lbs of Agua Prieta, MEX is 5-7.

JAIME MUNGUIA TO DEFEND WBO JUNIOR MIDDLEWEIGHT WORLD TITLE AGAINST TAKESHI INOUE IN FIRST GOLDEN BOY EVENT ON DAZN IN 2019

HOUSTON (Dec. 17, 2018): Jaime Munguia (31-0, 26 KOs) will headline the first Golden Boy Promotions event on DAZN in 2019 as he defends his WBO Junior Middleweight World Title against Japanese contender Takeshi Inoue (13-0-1, 7 KOs) in a 12-round battle. The action will take place on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas and will be streamed live on DAZN – which is just $9.99 per month after a one-month free trial.

“Our new partnership with DAZN is groundbreaking in this new era of boxing and sports streaming; fans subscribed to DAZN will constantly get high-level action at a single affordable price,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Jaime Munguia’s stock rose as he headlined three of our cards last year, and he will only become an even bigger star because he is planning for a very busy 2019 on DAZN. This event will also showcase some of our best talent as we continue to build the next generation of main event fighters.”

Munguia is a 22-year-old champion of Tijuana, Mexico who catapulted to the highest levels of the 154-pound division by knocking out Sadam “World Kid” Ali in May to capture the WBO Junior Middleweight World Title. Munguia then defeated Liam “Beefy” Smith via 12-round unanimous decision in July and completed a spectacular year with a third-round knockout win over Brandon “Bad Boy” Cook in the co-main event of Canelo vs. GGG 2. Munguia will embark on yet another busy year by defending his title for a third time in January.

“I’m thankful and happy with how my career went in 2018, but I’m hungrier and more excited than ever,” said Jaime Munguia. “I want to prove myself against the best. Takeshi Inoue is a warrior. Japanese fighters leave everything in the ring, and Inoue is no exception. His style will complement mine and will make for a great fight. I will put on a show for all my fans and thank you again for all your support.”

Inoue is a 29-year-old native of Japan who will make his debut in the United States in only his second fight outside of his native country. Inoue is ranked No. 3 by the WBO and is coming off a unanimous decision win against former regional titleholder Yuki Nonaka.

“I am pleased to be able to challenge for a world title. It is a dream come true,” said Takeshi Inoue. “I have experience fighting abroad, and I am excited and confident that I will win this fight. Munguia is a powerful fighter with heavy hands, endurance and technique. To prepare for a fighter like this, I have trained hard and in depth on technique and endurance. I have sparred long, hard rounds, so that I will be able to win even if it goes to a decision. I am highly motivated and mentally focused. Boxing fans can expect a great fight.”

“This Jan. 26, Jaime Munguia will once again put on a display of skill and power against Japanese warrior Takeshi Inoue in a fight between undefeated boxers,” said Fernando Beltran, CEO of Zanfer Promotions. “To have a fighter of the caliber of Jaime Munguia is a breath of fresh air for the world of boxing. He is ready to be recognized as the best super welterweight in the world and to defeat anyone in his path to achieve this. It is an honor for Zanfer to have a strategic alliance with Golden Boy Promotions to continue to build Jaime’s career. It will be an unforgettable one, and I invite everyone to watch him on DAZN.”

In the co-main event, Jesus Rojas (26-2-2, 19 KOs) of Caguas, Puerto Rico will defend his WBA Featherweight World Championship against Chinese contender Xu Can (10-0, 1 KO) in a 12-round clash.

The undercard for this event will feature several fighters from the Golden Boy Promotions stable, including three fighters who call Texas their home. They say everything is bigger in Texas, so we are making sure this undercard is huge as well.

Joshua “The Professor” Franco (14-1-1, 7 KOs) of San Antonio, Texas will seek to avenge his only loss against Argentine puncher Lucas Fernandez (12-2-1, 9 KOs) in a 10-round fight for the vacant NABF Bantamweight Title.

Alberto “Impacto” Melian (3-0, 2 KOs), a former amateur standout who participated in the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, will make his United States debut after signing with Golden Boy Promotions. In only his third fight, Melian will compete for the vacant NABA Super Bantamweight Title in a 10-round battle against Edgar Ortega (10-1-2, 5 KOs) of Mexicali, Mexico.

Filipino contender Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta (32-2-2, 17 KOs) will defend his NABO Lightweight Title in a 10-round fight against a soon-to-be-announced opponent.

Alex Rincon (5-0, 5 KOs) of Dallas, Texas will return in a six-round super welterweight fight against Jeremy Ramos (10-5, 4 KOs) of Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

George Rincon (5-0, 2 KOs), the older brother of Alex who also hails from Dallas, Texas, will participate in a six-round super lightweight clash against Eduardo Reyes (9-15, 6 KOs) of Reynosa, Mexico.

James “The Beast” Wilson (7-0, 6 KOs) of Los Angeles, a quick-handed heavyweight prospect who has also fought as a mixed martial artist and a kickboxer, will compete against a soon-to-be announced opponent in his first six-round fight as an official member of the Golden Boy Promotions stable.

Munguia vs. Inoue is a 12-round fight for the WBO Junior Middleweight World Title presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Zanfer Promotions. Rojas vs. Can is a 12-round fight for the WBA Featherweight World Title presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Universal Promotions. The event is sponsored by Tecate, “THE OFFICIAL BEER OF BOXING,” and Hennessy “Never Stop. Never Settle.” The event will take place Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas and will be streamed live on DAZN.

JOSEPH ‘JOJO’ DIAZ JR. DEFEATS JESUS ROJAS IN INAUGURAL GOLDEN BOY FIGHT NIGHT ON FACEBOOK WATCH AT SOLD-OUT AVALON HOLLYWOOD

LOS ANGELES (Aug 11, 2018): The inaugural edition of Golden Boy Fight Night on Facebook Watch kicked off with a bang as Joseph “JoJo” Diaz Jr. (27-1, 14 KOs) of South El Monte, Calif. defeated Puerto Rican warrior and WBA Featherweight World Champion
Jesus Rojas (16-1-2, 19 KOs) via 12-round unanimous decision in an exciting main event from a sold-out Avalon Hollywood. Though he struggled to hurt Rojas, Diaz Jr. was more active in every round, which earned him the decision win with scores of 116-112, 115-113, and 117-111. Rojas remains champion despite the loss per WBA rules.

“We won, but unfortunately I don’t get to come home a world champion because of weight issues,” said Joseph Diaz Jr. “I switched my diet this camp because I feel like my body has been changing, and I did something I never usually do to try to make weight. That is what made my body respond in a scary way with arm tingling and just feeling super fatigued. If the opportunity comes, I still want a fight at 126 pounds with any of the big guys, but if that doesn’t happen I wouldn’t be opposed to moving up to 130. Rojas came to fight. I don’t think people expected for this to be a tough fight, but it was. I would be willing to get a rematch with him.”

“It was a great fight. Diaz came to fight. We gave a fight that the people deserved,” said
Jesus Rojas. “I feel I was more active and that I threw punches. He was tired, and I was able to connect more with punches. The judges are the ones who make the call. One can see it one way, while another sees it another way. The judges make the call. I proved myself again the best. He wasn’t the great Joseph Diaz that you saw against other fighters when he was in the ring with me. I still feel I’m one of the top 126-pounders in the world.”

In tonight’s co-main event, Golden Boy Promotions presented yet another battle between two of its undefeated prospects as Jonathan “Thunder” Navarro (14-0, 7 KOs) of East Los Angeles, Calif. defeated Damon “No Smilin'” Allen Jr. (15-1-1, 5 KOs) via stunning seventh-round technical knockout. Navarro was the stronger and more accurate of the two fighters, landing short right hands before forcing the fight to be stopped at 1:33 of the aforementioned round.

“I feel great. Stepping up in class really made the difference,” said Jonathan Navarro. “He [Allen] took everything out of me. He’s a prospect, and he’s hungry, and he brought a lot out of me. I knew that once he felt my power, he would be out. I’m ready for whatever is next. I have to talk to my dad, my manager and Golden Boy Promotions, but I’m ready for anything.”

“It just wasn’t my night. He [Navarro] had the better class and plan, and we just came up short,” said Damon Allen Jr. “We’re both top prospects, and we knew it was going to be a war in there. I failed to keep my hands up and let him take control of me. I have to go back to the drawing board and see what’s next. I’ll be back – we just have to re-evaluate some things.”

Ferdinand Kerobyan (10-0, 5 KOs) of North Hollywood, Calif. scored a dominant six-round unanimous decision won against a very tough Jose Rivera (6-3, 4 KOs) of Manchester, Conn. in a middleweight bout. Kerobyan was victorious with three identical scores of 60-54.

“I came to give a great performance to the fans and to my family,” said Ferdinand Keroyban. “I feel so blessed to be a part of the first Facebook Watch show, and I hope my performance tonight shows that I’m capable of taking advantage of these opportunities. I wanted to get the knockout, but I am pleased with the result we got tonight. He was tough, and we were able to get some good exchanges. I look forward to jumping back into the ring soon.”

Aaron “Silencer” McKenna (5-0, 3 KOs) of Monaghan, Ireland defeated Rolando Mendevil (6-4, 4 KOs) of Sinaloa, Mexico via unanimous decision in a four-round welterweight clash. McKenna won with three scores of 40-36.

“Being a part of the Golden Boy Fight Night on Facebook Watch was amazing. I’m glad that I get to be a part of boxing history, and that my family from back home can watch,” said
Aaron McKenna. “I thought that we did great – I went in there with an opponent with more experience than me who was ready to go in. I learned a lot from those four full rounds. I’m looking forward to going back into the ring with an opponent Golden Boy and my team think would be a good fit for me.”

Jose Vargas (5-0, 4 KOs) scored a third-round technical knockout victory against Leonard Reyes (7-18, 3 KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico in a scheduled four-round featherweight battle. The fight was halted at :36 of the aforementioned round.

“I’m barely starting out, so everything I do still needs work,” said Jose Vargas.”I’m glad we got the knock out, and now it’s back to the drawing board to prepare for the next one.”

Rojas vs. Diaz Jr. was a 12-round fight presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Universal Promotions. The event was sponsored by Tecate,”THE OFFICIAL BEER OF BOXING,” and Hennessy, “Never Stop, Never Settle.” The fights took place on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at Avalon Hollywood. “Everyone was there during the Gary Russell Jr. fight. Oscar De La Hoya, my family and my team was there. There was no pressure. I just knew that it was the opportunity I had been waiting for my entire career. I knew I had to get it done. I knew it was in his hometown and that there were going to be a lot of his fans cheering him on. Unfortunately, I didn’t come out on top. I’ve watched the tape about 100 times. I looked at all the mistakes I made. I saw that if I would have just been more aggressive, started off earlier and used my jab that the outcome would have been different. I would be world champion right now. Things didn’t go as planned, but it was a lesson learned. I have the opportunity to fight for a world title again, and I can’t let this opportunity get past me. I’ve been training my butt off, and I’m going to walk away with the title around my waist.

Right now, I have a whole different mindset. We have a whole different training camp. On August 11, I will become world champion. Jesus Rojas is a dangerous fighter. He’s coming off two great wins and stopped both of them. He constantly applies pressure and has great conditioning. He’s going to keep on coming forward. My father and I know what he’s capable of and what he’s going to do. We’re working on my conditioning so that I do not get tired and so that I can be very active, throw a lot of shots and engage when he engages. It’s going to be an action-packed fight.”

JONATHAN “THUNDER” NAVARRO, Super Lightweight Prospect:
“This is going to be a tough fight for both of us, but me being a natural 140-pounder will be a factor. 140 pounds is the normal weight I fight at, and Damon Allen Jr. will be moving up from 135 pounds. Even though that’s only five pounds, that’s a lot in the sport of boxing, especially when you’re the smaller fighter. What makes Damon Allen a dangerous opponent is his speed and movement. To me, that’s all I see, and it’s not going to be a big deal. This fight will be a crossroads fight because we are both undefeated prospects. It’s going to be a hard fight. We’re going to give the fans a great fight. When we got word of this fight, I never hesitated to take it. The moment they told me his name I got happy because I know it will be an important fight. It excited me and made me want to train even harder. Not many young prospects get to showcase their talent against another fellow prospect this early in their career.”

FERDINAND KEROBYAN, Super Welterweight Prospect:
“I wouldn’t say I look for the knockout. But when the knockout presents itself, I never let back and give it my all to give the fans an exciting fight. I’ve been focusing on everything. I’ve been working on my craft. I’ve been working on getting my speed and power to work together as a unit. I’m looking forward to getting another win in front of my fans. I expect a big crowd at every fight because I have a very good fan base. It doesn’t matter how far I go, I know they will be there. I’m truly blessed to have them, and I want to give them a great show every time.”

AARON”SILENCER” MCKENNA, Welterweight Prospect:
“I’m very excited to be fighting on Facebook and on Golden Boy’s first-ever broadcast. I’ve had a great camp, and I’m ready to put on a great show for the fans in attendance and fans watching on Facebook. I always try to make my fights as exciting as I can for fans. I always try to put a good show and go for the knockout. Expect fireworks in this fight. I feel stronger in this fight than in previous fights.”

HECTOR “EL FINITO” TANAJARA, JR., Lightweight Prospect:
“I didn’t stop training after my last fight, so I’m feeling way better than in my last camp. I’m in great shape, and I’ve been doing 10 and 12 rounds of sparring. I’ve been working with Jonathan Navarro, and we’re helping each other in this camp. For my last fight, I knew he [Roger Gutierrez] was tough. You could tell from the weigh-ins that it was going to be heated. But things like that motivate me. When I fight good opponents, I look better. It helped me out because it showed what I could do and what I can still show I can do. The last fight gave me a lot of confidence. There were people saying that he was going to beat me or that he was stronger. It gave me a lot of confidence because there were even some rounds that I felt were easy. It gave me a lot of confidence. For this camp, we’ve been working on being busier and being aggressive. I’ve been working to get the knockout, and this fight will show that.”

DAMON ‘NO SMILIN” ALLEN JR. AND JONATHAN ‘THUNDER’ NAVARRO TO FACE OFF IN BATTLE BETWEEN GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS PROSPECTS IN CO-MAIN EVENT OF ROJAS VS. DIAZ JR.

LOS ANGELES (July 25, 2018): The inaugural edition of Golden Boy Fight Night on Facebook Watch promises even more fireworks as Damon “No Smilin'” Allen Jr. (15-0-1, 5 KOs) and Jonathan “Thunder” Navarro (14-0, 7 KOs) face off in a highly competitive battle between two undefeated Golden Boy Promotions prospects in the co-main event of Diaz Jr. vs. Rojas at Avalon Hollywood. The action will be streamed live on Saturday, August 11 beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. Fans can catch all the fights by clicking here.

This scheduled eight-round super lightweight battle will be the next chapter in a series of Golden Boy Promotions fights where our very best prospects are matched up to see who’s deserving of contender status.

Allen Jr. is a 25-year-old prospect who hails from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The quick-handed pugilist has defeated tough warriors such as Luis “Vampiro” Arceo, Gamaliel “El Platano” Diaz and Martin “El Brochas” Honorio. Though spending his career at lightweight, Allen Jr. will move up to 140 pounds for this matchup.

“This is a step-up fight for both of us because we’re both undefeated Golden Boy prospects,” said Damon Allen Jr. “I feel I have the advantage though because of my amateur experience and because I was taught in the school of Philadelphia boxing. That puts me ahead of a lot of the other prospects, and everyone will see that when I defeat Jonathan Navarro on August 11.”

Navarro, the pride of East Los Angeles, California, has been very busy this year and will return for his third fight of 2018. The 21-year-old is a natural 140-pounder, and he’ll look to use his size advantage on the much quicker opponent in Allen Jr.

“This is what it takes for me to make the next step in my career,” said Jonathan Navarro. “It’s rare to see two young and undefeated fighters facing each other, so I’m excited to be a part of this matchup against Damon Allen Jr. I feel I’m bigger, stronger and better skilled than Allen Jr., and I promise an exciting victory in front of a hometown crowd.”

Ferdinand “Lucky Boy” Kerobyan (9-0, 5 KOs) of North Hollywood, Calif. will battle across a scheduled six rounds of welterweight action. Aaron “Silencer” McKenna (4-0, 3 KOs) of Monaghan, Ireland will participate in a four-round 147-pound fight.

Opponents for these two fighters will be announced shortly.

Rojas stops Marrero in 7

LAS VEGAS–Jesus Rojas scored a sensational 7th round stoppage over Claudio Marrero to retain his WBA Interim featherweight title at the Marquee Ballroom inside the MGM Grand.

It was an action filled fight with Rojas getting the better of the exchanges with powerful combinations on the inside.

In round seven, Rojas landed a booming left hook in the corner that sent Marrero to his back. Marrero looked like he wanted to beat the count, but he stayed on his knees and was counted out at 2:59.

Rojas of Caguas, PR is 26-1-2 with 19 knockouts. Marrero of Santo Domingo, DR is now 22-2.

“I’m super happy and super emotional,” said Jesus Rojas. “I want to thank Roberto Diaz and the entire Golden Boy team, my family and my kids. This is the joy of many years of sacrifice and many fights that have been taken from me. I promised my father that I would get a title one day, and even though he is no longer with, my promise to him is complete. We knew that he [Marrero] was going to be aggressive and we purposely worked on our counterpunching, and that was what did the trick.”

Ryan Garcia needed just 30 seconds to destroy Miguel Carrizoza in their scheduled ten-round super featherweight bout.

In the opening seconds Garcia floored Carrizoza with a straight right. Carrizoza got to his feet but ate a perfect left hook to the head and the fight was stopped.

Garcia of Victorville, CA is 11-0 with ten knockouts. Carrizoza of Nogales, MEX is 10-3.

“I am just happy!,” shouted Ryan Garcia. “When I took the fight, I actually thought it might be a bit challenging since he had never gotten knocked out. Within seconds of the bout starting, I realized that the guy wasn’t going to touch me. Hopefully now with this title I’ll be able to take on some even tougher fights!”

Damon Allen remained undefeated by winning an eight-round unanimous decision over Jayro Duran in a

In round two, Allen was deducted a point for hitting low.

That was the only blemish for Allen, of Philadelphia took every round and won by scores of 79-72 on all cards to raise his mark to 13-0-1. Duran of San Pedro sula, HON is 10-3.

“This is just another win to add to my record,” said Damon Allen. “I brought the most ring savviness, power, and control into the fight. I felt like the referee kept interrupting my rhythm, and kept calling my body shots low blows and I still lost a point for it. This is my third fight this year, so I hope I get to fight again in December for a title.”

Horacio Garcia stopped Duhul Olguin in round four of their scheduled eight-round super bantamweight bout.

In the fourth round, Garcia dropped Olguin with a hard right hand. Garcia finished off Olguin with a hard left hook that was punctuated with a left to the head. Olguin fell to the canvas as referee Robert Byrd stopped the bout at 44 seconds.

Garcia of Guadalajara, Mexico is now 33-3-1 with 23 knockouts. Olguin of Guadalajara, Mexico is now 11-8-2.

“I’m very happy,” said Horacio Garcia. “I’m very grateful for all the people, the fans who support the Mexican fighters, Golden Boy Promotions, and my team. I really wanted to fight him [Garcia] again because I know that the first time there were things that happened that didn’t allow me to go into that fight well. But today the hard work was carried out well.”

Alexis Salazar won a six-round unanimous decision over Even Torres in a middleweight bout.

Salazar of Tiaquepaque, MEX won by scores of 60-54, 59-55 and 58-56 and is now 12-3. Torres of El Paso, TX is 6-5.

“My performance was okay tonight – I wasn’t as explosive as I wanted to be,” said Alexis Salazar. “I wish I would have paid more attention to my corner, I could have gotten the knockout. My opponent was able to put a lot of pressure, and he never got tired. Training with Canelo was such a privilege – I was able to learn what it takes to be a champion.”

Video: Jesus Rojas – Claudio Marrero weigh in

Rojas stops Lopez

Jesus Rojas stopped previously undefeated Abraham Lopez in round eight of their scheduled 10-round featherweight bout.

In round two, Rojas dropped Lopez with a straight right hand. Rojas sent Lopez down in a round four from a hard combination.

In round eight, it was an overhand right that sent Lopez down. Rojas continued to pound away at Lopez and referee Tony Weeks stopped the bout at 1:40.

Rojas, 126 lbs of Caguas, PR is now 25-1-2 with 18 knockouts. Lopez, 126 lbs of La Puenta, CA is 22-1-1.

“It’s almost three years since I’ve fought in the U.S.; this win is the opportunity to be on the global stage, and take on world champions,” Rojas said. “I promised my father that I would become a world champion, and even though he is not with me any more, I carry on our dream. I hope that by the end of the year, I am competing for an interim title or even a world championship.”
“It’s tough to swallow, I’m still processing it, but it happens,” Lopez said. “After this, I know I’m going to go back to the drawing board and start training hard again.”

In a battle of undefeated middleweights, Yamaguchi Falcao won a 10-round unanimous decision over Morgan Fitch.

Falcao, 160 lbs of Sao Paulo, BRA won by scores of 100-90 on all cards and is now 13-0. Fitch, 161 lbs of Pittsburgh, PA is 18-1-1.

Falcao landed 157 of 494 punches. Fitch landed 71 of 303.

“It’s been five months since I’ve been in the ring since my last fight,” Falcao said. “I had a lot of trouble adjusting and finding my rhythm. It’s a journey, and I’m glad I got the win but if I want to reach my goal of fighting the big time fighters I have to improve everywhere.”

“I don’t know what happened in there,” Fitch said. “I just know that I could have done better and been more serious in there. I’m at a loss of words.”

Vergil Ortiz, Jr. remained perfect by stopping Angel Sarinana in round three of their scheduled four round super lightweight bout.

Ortiz dropped Sarinana with a perfect right uppercut in round three. Sarinan got to his feet, but was wobbly and referee Jack Reiss sopped the bout at 1:44.

Ortiz, 140 lbs of Dallas, TX is 5-0 with five knockouts. Sarinana, 139.5 lbs of Durango, MX is 7-6-2.

“I saw him get hurt in the first round when hit him in the body with a hook,” Ortiz said. “Since that moment, I was just looking for the opportunity to get the knock out, but he was a tough guy and was able to make it through. In the third round, I saw him lose he guard, and I landed my uppercut that sent him to the floor. I think after this, I’m ready to increase my rounds. I think I am ready to take on some tougher opponents.”

HEADING FOR SURGERY IN MORNING, LARA FURIOUS WITH DIRTY TACTICS OF OPPONENT ROJAS

With plastic surgery to repair his badly damaged eyes scheduled for tomorrow in Mexico, and his entire boxing career in jeopardy, featherweight contender Jorge “Pilon” Lara (27-0, 19 KOs) says the opponent that caused the damage, Puerto Rico’s Jesus Rojas, should be banned permanently from boxing.

24-year-old Lara took on Rojas last Tuesday (September 8) in the co-feature of a Fox Sports 1-televised night of PBC Boxing from the Hollywood Palladium in Hollywood, California, and was forced to settle for a six-round technical draw after repeated headbutts from Rojas tore deep cuts over both his eyes. Lara suffered a bad cut on his left eye in round three and his right in round five. At the conclusion of round six, he indicated to referee Jack Reiss he was no longer able to see.

Under California rules, the fight went to the scorecards and was declared a draw when all three judges turned in scores of 57-57.

“He doesn’t deserve an opportunity for a rematch and should have his license revoked,” said a still furious Lara. “This kind of behavior from a fighter is not good for boxing. I came to fight this guy and he fought like a coward. He came only to win with dirty tricks and fouls.”

Lara says even if the surgery goes well he will be out a minimum of six months.

“He did the same thing in his fight against Jorge Arce in 2012,” continued Lara. “He can’t punch hard with his fists, so he uses a third fist that has no glove on it. And the fact that he got away with a technical draw and his headbutts were called accidental after he did over and over is disgraceful.”

Lara is scheduled to see Plastic Surgeon Dr. Adrian Corona Macias in his hometown of Guadalajara.

“I have worked so hard to get where I am in boxing and I hope the dirty tactics of one fighter don’t cost me my dreams.”
