“Speedy” Rashidi Ellis Marches Towards a World Title Shot

LYNN, MA – Top welterweight contender “Speedy” Rashidi Ellis (25-1, 16 KOs) headlines his second CES Boxing card in as many fights on Saturday, February 15, when he takes on Jose Angulo (16-9, 9 KOs) for the vacant WBC US Silver Welterweight Championship.

The fight is one of 3 stellar title bouts taking place at Mohegan Sun Arena that will be televised live worldwide on DAZN

Tickets to CES Boxing’s ‘Love and War’ are available now at CESfights.comTicketMaster, or the Mohegan Sun Box Office.  Priced starting at $77, the card makes the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for that special someone who enjoys the sweet science and some of the best restaurants, nightlife and amenities in the world, all under one roof.  Doors open at 4pm, with the first amateur bout scheduled for 5pm.

“I’m really excited to perform at Mohegan Sun Arena,” said the 31-year-old Ellis from his training camp in Salem, New Hampshire.  “The first professional fight I ever saw live was at Mohegan Sun, so I always wanted to fight there.”

In Rashidi’s way will be Jose Angulo, a former Ecuadorian champion who has shared the ring with the likes of ex-world champion Alberto Machado, welterweight contender Cletus Seldin, and super lightweight prospect Ernesto “Tito” Mercado.

Angulo has been an active fighter who has given every opponent he faced a tough outing.  The 28-year-old won the Ecuadorian title in 2023 and followed that up with a razor close majority decision loss to Seldin at Madison Square Garden last March.  A win over Ellis for the WBC title would be his biggest career achievement to date.

“He’s a decent fighter,” agrees Ellis when assessing Angulo. “I’ve seen a couple of his fights.  He’s someone that you can’t sleep on because if you overlook him, he could catch you or beat you, but he ain’t doing that over here. We’re working hard to make a statement.”

The statement Ellis wants to make is that he is the best welterweight in the world, and he’s willing to prove it against any of the current champions.

“Any one of them,” emphasizes Rashidi when asked which of the champions he’d prefer to challenge.  “I definitely want to beat up [WBO Champion] Brian Norman Jr.  We’ve been going back and forth, and we have to settle it this year.  I also want [WBC Champion] Mario Barrios.  I wanted to fight him a while ago when we were both with the PBC.  He’s a warrior, so it would be a great show, but I would come out victorious.”

One fighter who isn’t available is Jaron “Boots” Ennis, who will attempt to unify his IBF title against WBA champion Eimantas Stanionis in April.

“That’s a good fight,” concedes the Lynn, MA native.  “Stanionis is very strong, and Boots doesn’t have the best defense in the world.  Stanionis could catch him, but he also opens up a lot, so I think Boots is going to catch him with something eventually. I’d be more than ready to take on the winner.”

While there is no shortage of viable opponents for Ellis, the question is, what will it take to lure one of the champions into the ring with him?

“This is my second fight in a row on DAZN and it’s for a WBC title, so I should be on everyone’s radar and moving my way up the rankings,” reasons Ellis.  “If I can’t get one of the champions next, I’m happy to welcome some of the guys moving up from 140 to the welterweight division, like Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia.”

If those do not materialize, there is always the opportunity to avenge the only loss of his career, a majority decision loss to Roiman Villa in 2023.

“I definitely want that rematch to show the world that he didn’t beat the real me,” says Ellis.  “I was fighting with one hand that night.  This time I’ll knock him out with that hand.”

Before the talented fighter can look ahead to those lucrative fights, he needs to make sure that he shows out on “Love and War” on February 15.

“I’ve been training really hard at the LFG gym in Salem, New Hampshire with [middleweight prospect] Mike Fontanez,” assures Ellis.  “Training is good.  We’re working really hard and ready to take over the show.  Make sure you guys come through to Connecticut. We’ve got 3 title fights and a lot of great fighters on the card.  This is going to be an action-packed night.”

Tito Mercado Lands New Opponent has Big Plans to be Boxing’s Next Superstar

POMONA, CA (February 3, 2023) – Undefeated NABA super lightweight champion, Ernesto “Tito” Mercado (8-0, 8 KOs), has a new opponent for this Saturday, February 4, as he will now face Jose Angulo (14-4, 7 KOs), of Ecuador. The fight will still take place at the LumColor Center in Ontario, CA, with RED Boxing Promotions operating as the promoter, as Hank Lundy will no longer serve as Mercado’s opponent.

“I am glad Jose Angulo took the fight on short notice and I appreciate him stepping up,” said Mercado, the Olympic Trials Silver Medalist in 2020. “Angulo is a tough opponent, but my plan is to end this fight early and continue my knockout streak.”

Born in Pomona, CA, Tito has quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with. With his lightning-fast combinations, explosive power, Mercado is already making noise as one of the sport’s most exciting prospects.

Now, with a string of impressive wins under his belt, Tito is looking to take the next step and become the face of boxing. He believes that his story of perseverance and determination will inspire others to pursue their own dreams, no matter the odds.

Mercado has overcome numerous obstacles to reach the top of his game. Despite growing up in an underserved community, he never lost sight of his dreams, honing his skills through countless hours of hard work and dedication.

“I have big plans to be Southern California’s the next superstar in boxing.” continued Mercado. “I want to show people that anything is possible if you’re willing to put in the work. I know I have a long road ahead of me, but I’m making all the sacrifices to be great. This Saturday will be another step in the right direction.”

Tito, a promotional free agent, is ready to take the next step and join forces with a promoter who can help him reach new heights. The search for a promoter who shares his passion for the sport and his vision for the future, is the missing piece. He’s hoping to find a promoter who will help him achieve his ultimate goal of becoming a champion.

“I believe that I have what it takes to be a star in this sport, and I’m eager to find the right promoter who will help me get there,” Mercado says. “I’ve been working hard every day to improve my skills and reach my full potential. Right now, I have a great team behind me, and getting the right promoter will be the final piece.”

“New Blood” will take place at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, CA on Friday, October 21, 2022. Doors open at 6:30 pm PT with the first fight starting at 8:00 pm PT. Tickets are priced $50$75$100, and $125 are available for purchase by calling 714-935-0900 or online at www.thompsonboxing.com. Fight fans will be able to watch all Thompson Boxing fights, weigh-ins, and behind-the-scenes content, via their new mobile app downloadable on Apple and Google.

Here is what Acosta had to say about his recent training camp, his upcoming match with Angulo, and more.

On his recent training camp:

“I’m having a tremendous training camp. The big thing since COVID-19 has been focusing on getting my weight to the perfect balance of maintaining strength while not depleting my energy or power. I feel that I’m becoming a high-level fighter, in addition I’m fighting at the most ideal weight class for myself as well, which this fight will show.”

On his matchup with Angulo:

“Angulo is a tricky fighter. His three losses are against a couple of guys who are undefeated and another with one loss. Regardless, this is the biggest fight of his life – so I am preparing for the best version of Jose Angulo.  Angulo is a very dangerous opponent and I’m taking this fight very seriously as I know he’s coming with everything he’s got.”

On fighting in Southern California in Thompson’s main event:

Fighting at home is great. From my family to people who come from the gym to support me, will all be here to watch me fight. Boxing is such a lonely sport, so anything that breaks up the mental grind and isolation is always such a welcomed sight. My goal is to be great, and in the process of achieving that I miss out on a lot of other things people get to do in their life. Fighting for people who care, motivates me. In addition, fighting in the main event for Thompson Boxing is a tremendous blessing, as I know this fight will be available to watch on every device, phone, tablet, smart TV, and computer.

On what a win does from his career:

“I am currently ranked #15 on BoxRec in the U.S., and I am hoping after this fight against a good opponent, I will move into the top-fifteen in one of the sanctioning organizations. I want to target the best possible opponents available, while listening to Thompson Boxing’s advice, as they have put me in a great position. I know many of the world titles are vacant right now, so I want to fight good opponents to get myself in the mix to fight champions.”

This event is sponsored by HUSTLER Casino, LA’s only luxury casino; Thompson Building Materials, Transforming spaces into beautiful places; Omega Products International, The leading stucco manufacturer in the United States; Belgard, Paves the way; and Makita, Rule the outdoors.

FRIDAY: Xander Zayas-Jose Luis Sanchez & Raymond Muratalla-Jose Angulo Added to Oscar Valdez-Robson Conceição Bill in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. (September 6, 2021) — Puerto Rico’s next superstar hopes to break through with a statement-making performance under the desert sun. Xander Zayas, the 19-year-old puncher from San Juan, will step up in class when he meets Jose Luis Sanchez in a six-round junior middleweight bout this Friday, Sept. 10 at the AVA Amphitheater at Casino Del Sol in Tucson, Arizona.

Zayas-Sanchez and an eight-round lightweight battle between the unbeaten Raymond “Danger” Muratalla and Ecuador’s Jose Angulo will be part of the undercard of Oscar Valdez’s WBC super featherweight world title defense against unbeaten Brazilian Robson Conceição.

The undercard, which also includes WBO flyweight world champion Junto Nakatani’s title defense against Angel “Tito” Acosta, will stream live and exclusively on ESPN+ at 5:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. PT. ESPN+ will also stream Valdez-Conceição and a 10-round junior lightweight showdown between Gabriel Flores Jr. and Luis Alberto Lopez starting at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

Promoted by Top Rank, limited tickets priced at $25 are on sale now and can be purchased by visiting Etix.com.

Zayas (9-0, 7 KOs) has emerged as one of the sport’s top prospects since debuting as a 17-year-old in October 2019. He fought four times in 2020 and has already fought three times in 2021. He shut out James Martin over six rounds in February, blasted out Demarcus Layton in 56 seconds in April, and followed that up with a third-round demolition over Irish veteran Larry Fryers in June. The Fryers fight was Zayas’ welterweight finale, as he’s testing the junior middleweight waters versus Albuquerque native Sanchez (11-1-1, 4 KOs), who is coming off a draw in May against respected spoiler Adrian Granados. Sanchez has not lost since 2013.

Muratalla (12-0, 10 KOs), a Robert Garcia-trained Southern California native, has notched seven consecutive knockout wins. The 24-year-old shined a pair of times last year inside the MGM Grand Las Vegas Bubble and stood out in May on the Josh Taylor-Jose Ramirez undercard with a fifth-round knockout over 30-fight veteran Jose Gallegos. Angulo (14-2, 7 KOs) has won two straight fights since a majority decision defeat to then-unbeaten prospect Alejandro Guerrero.

In other undercard action on ESPN+:

  • 2016 Mexican Olympian Lindolfo Delgado (12-0, 11 KOs), who made his Top Rank debut June 19 with a unanimous decision over Salvador Briceno, returns against Miguel Zamudio (45-16-1, 28 KOs) in an eight-rounder at junior welterweight.

  • René Telléz Girón (15-1, 9 KOs), who owns a December 2019 knockout victory over top prospect Karlos Balderas, will face Texas native Eduardo Garza (15-4-1, 8 KOs) in an eight-rounder at junior lightweight. Giron has fought once since the Balderas triumph, knocking out Guadalupe Acosta Rodriguez last November in seven rounds.

  • Mexican junior welterweight knockout artist Omar “Pollo” Aguilar (21-0, 20 KOs) will step up in class against Paraguay’s Carlos Manuel Portillo (22-3, 17 KOs) in an eight-rounder. Aguilar has 15 first-round knockouts on his ledger and has not been extended past three rounds since December 2018.

  • Tucson’s Jose “Fosforito” Ramirez will make his official pro debut against fellow Arizona native Miguel Ceballos (2-0, 2 KOs) in a four-rounder at junior featherweight.
