“They want to box on cards like this, I’ve boxed on this card, let’s make the fight.  I believe I will beat both of them.”

Kalle Sauerland, Global Head of Boxing at Wasserman said: “Of course Liam Smith is still a big fight, so is Conor Benn, Chris Eubank and, potentially, Kell Brook.

“The Conor Benn fight goes back six or seven years.  Kell Brook was talked about a lot before this fight and we had made the Smith fight, before he was forced out.”

JOSH KELLY REVELS IN ‘SPICY’ ARGUMENT WITH ISHMAEL DAVIS AHEAD OF WEMBLEY CLASH

Josh Kelly said: “I believe he is going to bring exactly what Liam Smith was going to bring, but the big difference is that Liam is world class.

“If you put our styles and boxing ability, side by side, I believe you will see that Ishmael has been tossed in at the deep end.

“When it comes to crunch time, the big crowd, it’s going to come on top of him, real quick.

“He hasn’t got the power for me to respect him and for him to want to stand and trade.  He fought Troy Williamson and didn’t have him hurt once.

“[Ishamel] you need to wind it up and chill out.  Relax, relax, I know it’s your first time, but relax.”

Reflecting on the exchanges, Kelly said with a smile: “It’s a bit spicy.”

Ishmael Davis said: “I heard Josh’s interviews this week – he’s overlooking me.

“Your best win is Troy Williamson, who I just beat as well, and every time you have stepped up, you have been beat.

“I am the most progressive British boxer and you are overlooking me.  On Saturday, you are going to be in hell.

“You are a pretty boy, you are not cut like me.”

JOSH KELLY TO ‘STEAL THE SHOW’ VS LIAM SMITH ON HUGE WEMBLEY CARD

Josh Kelly: “Firstly, I want to His Excellency, Riyadh Season and Spencer Brown, a big thank-you.
“I’m a big 154 fighter so 160 will suit me.  I have nothing but respect for Liam, he has had a great career, he put Liverpool on the map – him and his brothers – and there is no bad blood between us, it’s just business
“Stylistically it’s one of the best match-ups on the card.”

Kalle Sauerland, Head of Global Boxing at Wasserman, said: “Yet again, the Riyadh Season, the global takeover, delivers. We’ve just got our breath back from the Undisputed clash and 5 vs 5, and now this, a historic card, the best card ever in Britain.
“The main event is absolutely gigantic, but Kelly vs Smith, could steal the show.  Yes, it is the right time to fight Liam, at the right weight.  People who are around the scene, know of Josh Kelly’s potential and this is his time to shine, in front of 90,000 people at an iconic venue.
“But it’s not about this being the right time to fight Liam, it’s Josh’s time.  Adam Booth has done a fantastic job, this man is on fire.  I believe this fight will steak the show.”

Liam Smith said: “This is a great fight on a huge card.  It’s a fight that not many people thought about but now it’s announced, they can see it’s an interesting fight.
“My focus is on Josh Kelly; I am massively confident of winning.  Josh and Adam probably feel like they are getting me at right time.  Fighters have made that mistake before, and they are doing the same thing.

“Josh has got to step up at some point and this might be his right time, but people have thought they are getting me at the right before – Anthony Fowler did so after I fought in Russia.  I feel refreshed now, we have long enough to go, this has lit the fire in my belly.  Big respect for Josh and Adam, but business is business.”

JOSH KELLY FACES COLOMBIAN KO ARTIST IN SUNDERLAND HOMECOMING AS INJURY FORCES KNAPP OUT

Josh Kelly will now face Colombian KO artist Placido Ramirez when he returns home to fight in Sunderland on December 16, live on DAZN.

‘Pretty Boy’ was due to face the dangerous Roarke Knapp but injury has forced the South African out of their super welterweight showdown at the Beacon of Light.

In his place comes Ramirez, the big-punching 29-year-old who heads to Wearside next week knowing that he can catapult himself into world title contention by wrecking Kelly’s homecoming party.

Kelly, ranked as the No1 contender on the planet, will be fighting in Sunderland for the first time as a professional and knows Ramirez represents a major threat to his big plans for 2024, which include a world title tilt and a fight at the Stadium of Light.

Also added to the event is one of British boxing’s most exciting young fighters, Tom Welland

The 19-year-old announced himself to the paid ranks with a devastating fourth round stoppage win on his debut in Brighton last month.

And Welland joins Newcastle’s Dan Toward, fresh from his stunning debut knockout triumph in Bolton on Friday night, as Wasserman Boxing showcases two of the country’s brightest young stars on DAZN.

Hard-hitting Kazak Tursynbay Kulakhmet, a former World Amateur Championships medalist, is another top-level addition to the card, which is delivered in association with William Hill, and he joins local stars Ben MarksbyHarvey Lambert and Travis Waters as well as Romanian Andrei Dascalu

The IBF world middleweight title eliminator between Denis Radovan and Andrei Mikhailovich has been postponed, however.

A muscle injury to Germany’s Radovan means he won’t be fit for the final eliminator which was due to act as the co-main event on December 16.

Radovan is ranked No3 with IBF and knew victory in Sunderland would land him a shot at world champion Janibek Alimkhanuly, but injury means the unbeaten 31-year-old must now wait to secure his chance.

Kalle Sauerland, Global Head of Boxing at Wasserman Boxing, said: “Out goes one dangerous opponent, and in comes another, for Josh Kelly’s huge homecoming show on December 16.

“The threat posed to Josh’s plans for next year remains high with Ramirez, who comes to the UK next week, with 17 knockouts on his record, nothing to lose and everything to gain.

“But Josh is the one of this country’s best fighters and the change of opponent has not changed his laser-focus on delivering a performance for his Sunderland fans to be proud of, but one that also sends out a statement of intent for next year.

“Make no mistake, 2024 is gearing up to be Josh Kelly’s year and a big win on December 16, on DAZN, sets that up perfectly.”

IBF WORLD TITLE ELIMINATOR LANDS ON KELLY VS KNAPP IN SUNDERLAND, LIVE ON DAZN

Denis Radovan and Andrei Mikhailovich collide in a final eliminator for the IBF world middleweight title, live on DAZN next month.

The two highest ranked contenders in the 160lbs division clash on Saturday, December 16 in Sunderland, on the undercard of Josh Kelly’s major homecoming fight with Roarke Knapp

Delivered by Wasserman Boxing, Radovan and Mikhailovich put their unbeaten records on the line at the Beacon of Light, in the hope of earning the right to challenge fearsome champion Janibek Alimkhanuly.

This world title eliminator acts as the co-main event to Kelly’s match-up against the highly ranked Knapp, with the Sunderland hero daring to risk his own title ambitions against the big-punching South African.

Kelly will be boxing in his hometown for the first time as a professional and an expected sell-out crowd will provide noisy support for the 29-year-old, in the biggest fight of his career.

North East talents Dan TowardBen Marksby and Travis Waters are also on the show, along with Harvey Lambert, plus many more fighters who will be announced in the coming days.

But today’s announcement confirms the addition of a high-level international scrap between Germany’s Radovan and New Zealand-based Russian, Mikhailovich, live on DAZN.

Denis Radovan said: “I don’t waste time yapping like him and his crew.

“December 16th, my statement hits – not through the media, but right on his chin.”

Andrei Mikhailovich said: “I am extremely excited for the opportunity to fight Denis.

“To be fighting for a world title eliminator is a dream come true.

“Only one man will be left in my way after this victory.

“In the Wild West of Auckland, we are training hard to show everyone who I am.

December 16th, I can’t wait.”

Kalle Sauerland, Global Head of Boxing at Wasserman Boxing, said: “Radovan vs Mikhailovich is a brilliant fight to add to this massive show in Sunderland.

“Whether you’re sitting at ringside, or watching at home on DAZN, you will love this one, and it will get the adrenaline pumping for the main event.

“Radovan and Mikhailovich are both unbeaten, both extremely confident and both laser-focused on winning a shot at the prestigious IBF world middleweight title.

“Those ingredients together can mean only one thing – a great fight for the fans.”

JOSH KELLY RETURNS HOME TO FACE ROARKE KNAPP IN SUNDERLAND, LIVE ON DAZN

Josh Kelly fights in front of his home fans for the first time as a professional when he faces Roarke Knapp in Sunderland on December 16.

Shown live exclusively on DAZN worldwide, Kelly headlines the Wasserman Boxing show against the power-punching South African at the Beacon of Light, with both men daring to put their world title ambitions on the line.

Kelly has boxed all over the world but will walk to the ring in his hometown for the first time since 2012, when he was a rising amateur, on the path towards international titles and Olympic qualification.

‘Pretty Boy’ is now one of the world’s leading contenders in the super welterweight division and his return home, which is set in the shadow of the famous Stadium of Light, promises to be an emotionally charged evening.

But Johannesburg’s Knapp also has strong ties to the city and says, like Kelly, he is a lifelong supporter of Sunderland AFC, thanks to his father and grandparents who were born in the city.

Josh Kelly said: “I’m so excited to be boxing back home, in Sunderland, for the first time as a professional.

I can’t wait to put on a show and get dancing under those lights on December 16th, with the support of my city behind me.”

Roarke Knapp said: “This is my time to step it up, I belong with the best in the world and so what better way to cement my legacy and introduce myself to the world, than in the UK.

“Kelly is a sublime talent, we’ve both got brilliant styles and it’s going to be great to mix it up and see who the better man on the night is.

“I spent my formative years in the UK, I still have family there and my Dad was born and bred in the Sunderland, so the blood that flows through these veins is also from Sunderland and I am a Sunderland fan through and through.”

Kalle Sauerland, Global Head of Boxing at Wasserman Boxing, said: “December 16 is the most important night of Josh Kelly’s career and so making sure he has the backing of his home fans, was vital.

“I was stunned to learn that he’s not boxed in the great sporting city of Sunderland since he was an amateur, 11 years ago, so for everyone involved this is going to be a special homecoming.

“Josh is one of British boxing’s most gifted fighters and now that he is entering his prime, he is ready for all-comers.  Knapp is the type of big-punching fighter that a lot of Josh’s rivals would have avoided like the plague, but not our man.  To prove he is the best in the division, he’s prepared to take on anyone.”

“Another great fight to add to our best-in-class autumn schedule” said Alfie Sharman VP, DAZN.

“Josh Kelly has all the tools to become a World Champion and on the 16th December, he takes a step closer to fulfilling that potential. Watch it live and exclusive, only on DAZN.”

Kelly, 29, is enjoying one of British boxing’s most compelling comeback stories of recent times and knows he will stand on the brink of a world title shot if he can defuse the power of Knapp, who has brutally stopped 12 of his opponents.

The former Great Britain amateur, who toyed with the previously unbeaten Gabriel Corzo live on DAZN in July, is ranked as the No1 contender by the WBO, and also holds lofty positions with the IBF and WBC.

Knapp, whose record stands at 17-1-1, has built his reputation in South Africa but is now ready to travel overseas to pursue his own world title ambitions.

And on December 16, at the Beacon of Light and live on DAZN, they meet to determine which one takes a giant stride towards the top.

KALLE SAUERLAND EYES ‘DOMESTIC BLOCKBUSTERS’ FOR JOSH KELLY

Kalle Sauerland will explore “domestic blockbusters” for Josh Kelly should he see off his unbeaten rival on Saturday night.

Kelly, the world No2, meets Argentina’s 18-0 Gabriel Corzo at the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastlelive on DAZN

Victory would put Kelly within touching distance of a shot at the world super welterweight title and while Sauerland says that will be a potential next step, he will also look at matching the former Olympian with some big-name domestic rivals.

But, first, Kelly must defend his WBO International title against a fired-up Corzo on the Wasserman Boxing show this weekend, which is delivered in association with William Hill

Kalle Sauerland said: “Josh is the world No2 and a win on Saturday night will put you right there, in line for the title, my friend.

“But you only have to look around Josh’s weight domestically to see some great fights for him.

“Look at the names around the weight, such as Kell Brook, Chris Eubank Junior, Liam Smith and, potentially, Conor Benn. You can quite easily get a Super Six tournament together! These are exciting times for Josh Kelly.

“I can see opportunities emerging for Josh in the world title route later this year but there are also these domestic blockbusters.”

Josh Kelly said: “There are levels to this game and especially so when you reach the top echelons, so Corzo will be swimming with the sharks on Saturday night. He will be a lamb to the slaughter.”

A confident Gabriel Corzo said: “I have come here to win. I am aware that I am the away fighter, but Kelly has lost before, and he can lose again. He has been knocked out before and so he can be knocked out again.”

Kelly’s coach, Adam Booth, said: “Those names that Kalle mentioned, they don’t want to fight Josh because they know what a nightmare he is. He is not just a nightmare for them because they can’t touch him, but also because they will get hurt while that is happening. But, first, Josh has a job to do on Saturday.”

All tickets bought for the original date remain valid for the new date of July 15, with Kelly vs Corzo still being staged at the Vertu Motors Arena, in Newcastle as planned.

The 29-year-old’s meeting with the unbeaten Argentinian will be shown live and exclusive around the world on DAZN..

Kalle Sauerland, Global Head of Boxing at Wasserman Boxing, said: “Josh has been firing on all cylinders in the gym of late, and was itching to get back in the ring in front of his brilliant fans.

“However, he suffered an injury in training which means we have to push his return back three weeks.

“But Josh will be ready for July 15, where he will deliver a statement performance to the rest of the division, live on DAZN.”

JOSH KELLY PREDICTS ‘TROUBLE’ AS HE SETS OUT WORLD TITLE PLAN

A razor-sharp Josh Kelly has warned Gabriel Corzo he is in a world of “trouble” when the pair meet in a high-stakes clash on June 24.

Kelly collides with the unbeaten Argentinean at the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle later this month, with the packed Wasserman Boxing event shown live and exclusive around the world on DAZN

The world No2, who displayed frightening speed and power during Friday’s training session at The Booth Boxing Gym, knows victory over the tough Corzo will put him within touching distance of a shot at the world title.

The 2016 Olympian feels unstoppable, believes he is about to enter his “prime” years and is now ready to take over the world in the next 12 months.

“It is going to be an explosive performance on June 24 and my skillset, coupled with the way I am performing at the moment, means I can’t be matched. I am looking for the big names now,” Kelly declared.

“Having just turned 29, I am coming into my prime and Corzo is going to be in trouble later this month.

“I know I will get the chance for this world title in the next 12 months and I will win it.”

Kelly vs Corzo headlines a great night of boxing in Newcastle on June 24, with Liam Dillon and Qais Ashfaq battling it out for the vacant British super featherweight title, in the co-main event.

North East fighters Luke Cope, Travis Waters and Joe Laws are also set to draw in the crowds, on a huge night of action in Newcastle.

JOSH KELLY SIGNS MULTI-YEAR DEAL WITH WASSERMAN BOXING

Kelly is set to become the next British boxer to break onto the world stage and Wasserman Boxing, one of the sport’s leading promoters, will be in his corner as his career goes to the new levels.

The ‘Pretty Boy’, ranked No2 in the world, is preparing for his June 24 showdown with Argentinean hardman Gabriel Corzo at the Vertu Motors Arena, in Newcastlelive and exclusive worldwide on DAZN

“I have loved working with Kalle, Nisse and the whole team and know that, with them in my corner, my career will continue to go from strength to strength.

Live and exclusive around the world on DAZN, North East hero Kelly puts his world title dream on the line against the highly ranked Argentinean Gabriel Corzo, who has already cranked up the tension by promising a “war”.

And now the Wasserman Boxing event has become even bigger with the addition of Dillon vs Ashfaq, in a scrap which has all the ingredients to be a show stealer.

Dillon is the unbeaten and dangerous Londonder who is coming off a career-best win over Joshua Wahab and the 27-year-old plans on upsetting the odds again, but this time against former Olympian Ashfaq.

Leeds favourite Ashfaq is the former Team GB stand-out, who won medals at major international tournaments, boxed at Rio 2016 and is back in form after suffering a shock defeat in 2020.

Dillon (12-0-1) said: “Qais Ashfaq is a mountain for me to climb but I was the big underdog in my last fight and people had written me off, but I caused a big upset.

“After my last win I was still the English champion and so I asked my team if we could push for the British. The British title is one I have always wanted but I didn’t ever know if I had the ability or know-how to win it. But after my last fight, I know I am ready.”

Ashfaq (12-1) said: “Liam is a very tough kid and while he may not have my technical ability, he will be in my face for the whole fight.

“But he can’t out-box me and this can be a very straight-forward fight for me, but it is also for me to lose.

“But I believe this is the reboot of my career and winning the British title will lead to many more big nights, and I genuinely believe I will still become a world champion.”

Wasserman Boxing can also confirm that the future of women’s boxing in this country, Chloe Watson, will step up to eight rounds for the first time, with victory edging her closer to title contention.

Watson, the unbeaten former international amateur star who is trained by Ricky Hatton, tackles Belen Valdebenito in Newcastle and plans on making yet another statement in her second contest of the year.

Hometown heavyweight Steve Robinson locks horns with Franklin Ignatius in a thunderous collision of big punchers that nobody is expecting will go the eight-round distance.

Codie Smith, one of the most exciting young British boxers to turn professional in recent years, has the second contest of his career and will be backed by a noisy army of fans making the trip from Yorkshire.

Darlington’s hugely popular Ben Marksby has his eyes fixed on climbing the super lightweight ladder this year and plans on making his first fight of 2023 one to remember, in front of the DAZN cameras.

Big local support is also expected for Luke CopeTravis Waters and Joe Laws on June 24, while the Mikkel Kessler-trained Oliver Zaren fights on UK soil for the second time as part of a not-to-be-missed event.

JOSH KELLY STARTS WORLD TITLE CHARGE IN NEWCASTLE LIVE ON DAZN

Wasserman Boxing has joined forces with the global broadcast giant to drive Kelly’s world title pursuit, which starts at the Vertu Motors Arena next month.

Kelly is ranked No2 in the world and knows victory over Corzo will put him within touching distance of a shot at undisputed champion Jermell Charlo.

But the unbeaten Corzo, who sits at No9 in the standings, has global ambitions of his own and intends on ripping up the script to leave Kelly’s world title dream in tatters.

The show also sees the return of heavyweight contender Nathan Gorman, a second pro contest for the super skilled Codie Smith as well as the latest outing for the future of women’s boxing in this country, Chloe Watson

Newcastle heavyweight Steve Robinson collides with Franklin Ignatius in a battle of big-punching big men that is not to be missed, and the popular Ben Marksby continues his super lightweight journey.

Josh Kelly said: “A win over Corzo on June 24 in Newcastle will put me within touching distance of a shot at the world title.

“I’m thrilled to be teaming up with DAZN and fully intend on producing a stellar performance that will be seen around the world on their platform.

“Corzo is ranked No9 in the world and is a good fighter, but I am going to deliver a display that makes the rest of the division sit up and take note.  You don’t want to miss this one.”

Gabriel Corzo said: “Make no mistake, on June 24 in Newcastle, Josh Kelly’s world title dream ends and mine gets closer to being a reality.

“I am not travelling all the way from Argentina to make up the numbers.  I want my shot at the world title and Kelly is standing in my way of that, so he must be moved aside.

“I hope Kelly’s fans are prepared for the upset that is coming.”

Kalle Sauerland, Global Head of Boxing at Wasserman, said: “Josh Kelly is ready to take on the world and everyone at Wasserman Boxing is thrilled to team up with DAZN on his journey to the top.

“We all watched in awe at Josh’s display against Troy Williamson late last year, where he showed, over 12 faultless rounds, just how gifted he is.

“The unbeaten and dangerous Corzo is up next on June 24 in Newcastle, but Josh Kelly, ranked No2 in the world, is an exceptional talent and I strongly believe we are going to see something extra special, live on DAZN.”

“DAZN are proud to be teaming up with Wasserman Boxing, adding more big nights of boxing to our best-in-class schedule’, said?Joe Markowski, CEO DAZN North America.

“In 2023, we are determined to add to this and grow it in order to deliver for fight fans. We look forward to following Josh Kelly every step of the way on his road to a World Title shot. Tune in June 24 to watch a great night of boxing, live and exclusive on DAZN.”

Kelly, nicknamed ‘Pretty Boy’, is embarking on one of British boxing’s most compelling comeback stories of recent times as the 29-year-old continues to rise from his defeat to David Avanesyan

The gifted 2016 Olympian was written off and dismissed by many following the stoppage loss, but December’s masterclass British title win over Williamson capped the first stage of his return and proved the critics wrong.

And on June 24, live on DAZN, the Sunderland AFC fan has the chance to take a huge step towards securing a world title shot.

MASSIVE TELEVISION AUDIENCE FOR KELLY’S BRITISH TITLE MASTERCLASS

A massive television audience tuned in to witness Josh Kelly (13-1-1, 7 KOs) capture the British Super Welterweight Title with a dazzling shut-out performance against North East rival Troy Williamson (19-1-1, 14 KOs) on Friday December 2, live and free on Channel 5.

‘PBK’ proved his doubters wrong by outwitting the reigning British Champ in front of a raucous crowd at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle. Concerns over the challenger’s stamina were cast aside as the Sunderland man continued to set the pace over the championship rounds, cruising to a spectacular 119-111, 119-109 and 118-110 unanimous decision win.

Channel 5’s coverage of the British Super Welterweight Championship contest between Williamson and Kelly, which also featured former WBO #1 contender Lyndon Arthur (21-1, 15 KOs) back in action and back to his best delivering a devastating stoppage victory over Joel McIntyre (20-5, 5 KOs), attracted an incredible reach of over 1.8million viewers, with an average audience of 552,000 and a peak of 822,000 for the main event.

“What an incredible way to end the first year of our partnership with Channel 5,” said Wasserman Head of Global Boxing Kalle Sauerland. “A local derby settled in front of a capacity crowd with the British Super Welterweight crown on the line – all live and free for the British public to enjoy on terrestrial television.

“The figures speak for themselves. Boxing continues to be a huge hit with terrestrial television audiences, and we want to continue to deliver breathtaking fights that viewers can enjoy for free.

“We saw the re-emergence of a star and one of the most exciting fighters in British boxing right now in Josh Kelly. Josh has a massive future ahead of him and we look forward to some mouth-watering match ups for him, along with the rest of our stable including Lyndon Arthur, Harlem Eubank and Chloe Watson, who have proved they’re ready for title contention. 2023 is going to be a monumental year for Wasserman Boxing!”

KELLY MASTERCLASS CROWNS HIM BRITISH CHAMPION

Last night, it was Josh Kelly’s (12-1-1, 7 KOs) world and we were just living in it. A flawless performance from the Sunderland man saw him make light work of a tremendously gifted opponent in the dethroned Troy Williamson (19-1-1, 14 KOs). However, the British Super Welterweight Championship is making its way to Sunderland with ‘PBK’ after a truly phenomenal performance, scored 118-110, 119-109 and119-111 by the judges, live on Channel 5 from the Utilita Arena, Newcastle.

Kelly was consistently in a ‘flow state’ from the opening bell as he was loose and fluid both defensively and offensively. It was as predicted by fans and pundits as Williamson wasn’t quite prepared for the quick start and vicious speed possessed by his opponent. The left hook from Kelly caused problems throughout the night as it often landed flush whenever thrown, followed by a right uppercut, which proved to be a damning combination.

Williamson never once backed down from the uphill task of trying to keep his belt and close down Kelly. After being dominated in the first round, he was immediately back off his stool to step towards ‘PBK’ and look to shut him down. Kelly proved to be far too switched on for Williamson to land any substantial blows however as the Sunderland man remained confident in circling his opponent from the outside.

The mature performance from the new champion, Kelly, was epitomised in the fifth round as a left hook and right hook had Troy scrambled for a moment. With a slight quiver in his opponent’s legs, Kelly was in no rush to blindly seek a finish. He remained aggressive and aware of any opportunity to present itself, but this was a different fighter existing in his own bubble on the night and he remained in control of his emotions and dictated the bout.

It was more otherworldly moments from Kelly in the seventh round, reincarnating into Muhammad Ali 2.0 briefly as the rope-a-dope style evasion had the arena in awe. His confidence carried him in full control all the way towards the end of the fight as he remained calm, cool and collected with every second of every round.

With questions regarding his gas tank being asked in the build up to this, the eleventh round certainly answered them all as well as the fact he opted to stand between rounds and pace around the ring. He was still spritely, and still so loose and active as he pulled out another tried and tested left hook with a right uppercut. Another mainstay in the fight was Kelly’s movement, constantly snapping jabs at lovely angles to then use his footwork to slide out of the way and leave Williamson turning to find him once again.

In the final round, the Channel 5 commentary team declared this a masterclass from Kelly, which it absolutely was. There was nothing that could have been done on Williamson’s part last night with the type of fighter he faced in front of him. Credit to Williamson who will certainly be back and incredibly likely to hold the Lonsdale belt again having suffered his first defeat in the professional ranks. For Josh Kelly, this is the beginning of something special.

Josh Kelly

“The performance felt that smooth, and that much like it was the way it was supposed to go, I’m saying to Adam “Can you snap me out of this dream”. That was support from all sides tonight with some Middlesbrough fans, some Newcastle fans and some Sunderland fans; but the North East turned out.  This British title means so much to me, oh my god, all that hard work’s paid off baby!”

“What gas tank? That’s cancelled. I feel like I can go and do another five or ten rounds there. I boxed to instructions, boxed clever, boxed safe, boxed tidy and didn’t take no risks; and that’s what the outcome turns out like. Troy was meant to come and do a demolition job on me, he’s a hard-punching knockout artist in the Super Welterweight division. There’s a new name now, there was always the name actually, but it has come into play now. Josh Kelly, baby.”

“A massive happy birthday to my trainer Adam Booth as well. Massive respect to Troy and all his team and fans too, all that online stuff is just online stuff. We’re cool, Troy’s a very hard and strong competitor, but I want to take the time to thank everyone who has stuck behind me and been loyal. My dad, my mum, my family; everybody man.”

“Thank you Channel 5 and everyone for all their support. Merry Christmas everyone, we’re going to have a good one this year.”

Kalle Sauerland

“There’s good boxers, there’s very good boxers, and then there’s special boxers. I’m so proud of Josh, all those critics had their words stuffed right back down their throats after them 12 rounds tonight. The sky is the limit for him, like Adam (Booth) said, he’s not just good he’s special. There’s a reason why there was so much hype surrounding him at the beginning of his career; the hype train is back on.”

“It’s going to be an amazing journey next year, we’re just very excited. I want to enjoy tonight first but there’s huge domestic fights available to us, this is world level though. What we saw tonight was world class. This has been a long time coming, tonight he proved all the doubters wrong in the best possible way. I’m so proud of him, and Adam, absolute professionals in the way they’ve gone about it as always. What Josh did tonight was a masterclass against a very dangerous opponent, do not underestimate him because he’ll be back I’m sure; but Josh Kelly is special.”

Adam Booth

“I’ve said from the first day that he’s the most talented fighter I’ve ever worked with. The only person who beat Josh Kelly up until now was Josh Kelly, he had to overcome monumental mental issues. We have now started to unearth the potential that lies in this man; he is going to be something special.”

“I’m only interested in working with the best, and he’s only interested with being the best.”

JUDGEMENT NIGHT: KELLY VS. WILLIAMSON PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

The intensity increased today at the press conference as both fighters expressed the magnitude of this British Super Welterweight title fight on Friday, ‘Judgement Night’, to decide who reigns king of the North East between Sunderland’s Josh Kelly (12-1-1) and current British champion Troy Williamson (19-0-1) at the Utilita Arena, live on Channel 5, December 2.

Neither men held back as the respect for each other took a back seat, with both camps launching verbal blows, outlining how the fight will pan out and who the superior fighter is. With the words put to one side, a fierce face-off allowed both men to stare into the opposition’s eyes and see what they’re made of ahead of a monumental moment in the North East.

Kalle Sauerland

“Good afternoon again, normally the promoter talk is about how big this is, how bad this is, how great this is; but this doesn’t really need much selling. It’s fantastic being involved in such a show, because in my 20 years in boxing the British title is one I haven’t done much of, I’ve done more with World titles and European titles, but I’ve quickly fallen in love with the British title this year. The matches it makes, the fights it throws up; it does our matchmaking job for us. This is the crème de la crème, and the fact we have it in the North East is perfect. We are expecting over two million to watch the Fight on Friday. We have got two gladiators who are going to give it their all – I’m firmly in the Josh corner, but this is an advertisement for our sport, second to none. . It is live and free on Channel 5 on Friday night.”

Adam Booth

“It’s not about the size of this, there won’t be 70,000 people in that arena, but what I see is one of the best matchups, certainly domestically, that I’ve been involved in. Troy Williamson, an excellent amateur and an unbeaten pro, and has proven what he can do. We know exactly what Troy Williamson is, and we’re also supremely confident that people haven’t yet seen what Josh Kelly is yet. It’s a fascinating matchup, I really don’t think there’s been a better fight in British boxing this year, and Channel 5 and its millions of viewers on a free-to-air platform are going to have a great night of entertainment. There’s going to be a spectacular performance and an incredible atmosphere, and as someone who has experience in big events I must say I’m as excited about this as I ever have been about any other fight. I’m looking forward to it.”

“I firmly believe in what I know and what I’ve seen in Josh Kelly.”

Troy Williamson
“Preparations have one great, I have been in the Gym for a long while, eleven weeks of working hard and smart, and I’m ready to rock and roll on Friday night.”

“All I need to do is turn up and perform. The hard work has been done, I’m performing well in the gym, and I’m firing on all cylinders. I’m hitting tremendous numbers with my strength and conditioning and even out on runs; I’m in a great position mentally and physically. You’re going to see on fight night.”

“I’ve said it before, I probably don’t need to say it again, but I believe he lacks heart. I feel it’s bred in people, one thing’s for certain is that it’s bred in me, but we’re going to see on Friday if Josh has got it because I’m going to take him to deep waters. He’s in for a tough night.”

“I’m not necessarily going in there to try and take him out. A lot of people underestimate my boxing skills, I’ve been apart of Team GB and boxed elite amateurs around the world, so don’t underestimate my boxing. I can box, and don’t for a moment think I can’t out-box Josh Kelly.”

“I wouldn’t say there’s bad blood, but everyone is tuning in to see me though. Let me ask Josh one thing, how many tickets have you sold?”

Josh Kelly responds, “I don’t know, I’ve only sold a handful I think. For Troy it’s about how much he’s liked and the popularity online. Look, is it about how many tickets you sell and how much you’re liked? I’m me, I’ll do me.”

Josh Kelly

“I’d like to see him out-box me on the night, 100%. If he wants to try and box me that’ll be good, he’ll be a silly man to do that but I think it’s going to go how I want it to go on the night. I cannot wait to lace them boots up, get them gloves on, and get dancing in that ring.”

“All of the pressure is on Troy. I’ve operated at top levels, I’ve boxed at Madison Square Gardens, I’ve been with ex-world champions. I know exactly what these big events are like with the pressure it brings; when he walks to that ring he’s going to feel it on Friday night.”

“If you look at Troy, then look at me, there’s things I do better. Let me ask Troy, when it gets to the sixth round, and I’ve still got the gas tank, and I’m firing on all cylinders, and when I’m still boxing unbelievably; what are you going to do then?”

Troy Williamson responds, “Ask Ted Cheeseman.”

Josh Kelly Continues, “You see that there, no intelligent response. One sandwich short of a picnic sums it up really.”

“Stylistically it’s a great matchup. Troy comes forward and tries to fight, I box, so it makes for good television. When you go and watch fights you either like the fighter or you like the boxer, and I think that’s why everyone wants to tune in.”

“When I’ve thought about this fight, I’ve seen Troy hurt.”

Kalle Sauerland

Let me put this to both of these gladiators, the eyes of the boxing nation will be on you, it’s a hugely anticipated fight where the atmosphere is going to be red hot. Josh you’ve fought on big shows before, Troy you’ve done the same but a little less.

Troy Williamson responds, “How is it a little bit less? I’ve fought on big shows and delivered every single time.”

Josh Kelly responds, “Madison Square Gardens.”

Troy Williamson responds, “Every time you have stepped up, you’ve failed.”

Josh Kelly responds, “You’re stepping up to me mate, you know that. You’re stepping up to me.

Kalle Sauerland continues, “It’s not just a British title, but it’s a fight for your right. The winner goes on to fight for world honours. For the loser, I don’t think this would be the end, but it would be a much longer road back. It makes it so much harder to lose on a stage like this. It’s different losing in a small venue, off tv, than losing on an occasion like this. Especially when it’s the bragging rights of the North East at stake. This is THE biggest British matchup of the year, and I’m looking forward to seeing it all ringside.

JUDGEMENT NIGHT: KELLY VS. WILLIAMSON MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

It was Media Workout day as fight night for the British Super Welterweight title draws nearer. Friday will see ‘Judgement Night’ decide who reigns king of the North East between Sunderland’s Josh Kelly (12-1-1) and current British champion Troy Williamson (19-0-1) at the Utilita Arena, live on Channel 5, Friday December 2.

Both men are currently belt holders, both men are coming into this off the back of wins; ultimately, both men can claim the biggest win of their careers in their own back yard. Kelly holds the WBO International Super Welterweight title, but it will be the Darlington man’s historic Lonsdale belt on the line which champion Williamson will be eager to keep in his possession. It’s the final time the media will get the opportunity to see both of these North East stars in the ring, with an electric night promised in Newcastle.

Josh Kelly:

“It’s on. Fight week has started and I’m fired up and ready to go. A little bit of a light session today with non-contact stuff; I’ll save all the contact punching for Friday when I get that British belt.”

“I know what to expect from Troy, he’s a good fighter but he doesn’t present any new problems for me. I’ll be the best opponent he has come up against and he’ll be second guessing what things are going to be like.”

“For me, there have been plenty of Troy Williamsons that I have beaten before, and that will be the exact same outcome for this fight. And the new…”

Troy Williamson:

“His pedigree counts for nothing, you have to remember he was meant to next best thing since sliced bread. People always mention being in the Olympics but it’s irrelevant, he’s been found out before and I’ll expose him on fight night.”

“He’s always been a technical fighter but the questions still hang over him – can he swim when the water starts getting rough? I can turn this into a fight he won’t like, and when things get rough I don’t think he’ll know how to respond.”

“One of us is going to come out of this as the Super Welterweight hope for North East boxing. I can tell you now, it’ll be me.”

It was a media workout littered with local talent, as well as the main event of the evening in Kelly and Williamson. The media will have to wait one more day to address the likes of Lyndon Arthur in his clash with Joel McIntyre, as well as a rematch between the big heavyweights in Hosea Stewart vs. Franklin Ignatius II!

Lydon Arthur (20-1, 14 KOs) will be heading to the North East for the press conference tomorrow in Newcastle as he is back in the ring to face Joel McIntyre (20-4, 5 KOs) at Light Heavyweight, live on Channel 5.

‘King Arthur’ looks to build off his sixth-round dominant stoppage performance against Walter Gabriel Sequeira in Bolton back in September. He now steps up in opposition as he goes in hot pursuit of title challenge opportunities. With momentum behind the Manchester man, an electric Newcastle crowd will be in for a treat as they watch a hungry fighter on a mission.

The former Commonwealth and WBO Inter-Continental light-heavyweight champion, Arthur will have to prove he is title worthy by coming through the tough ‘El Toro’ in the form of McIntyre.  The Portsmouth fighter will be looking to spoil Arthur’s ascendency and will be looking to lean on the additional rounds in his career to work out a masterplan to dethrone ‘King Arthur’.

The mouth-watering heavyweight battle betweenHosea Stewart (2-0-1) and Franklin Ignatius (4-0-1, 1 KO) could easily contend for ‘Fight of the Night’ as both men will look to claim the first win of this saga, after the first fight ended in a draw last time out in Newcastle.

With both men yet to suffer a defeat, and a closely fought draw on their last visit to Newcastle, the ‘0’ must surely go this time as two young fighters look to put their name in lights on a huge Channel 5 card.

Stewart continues to go in search of his first knockout win of his fledgling professional boxing career as the 24-year-old will be looking to steal the limelight at “Judgement Night” in Newcastle. Ignatius will be coming to grab headlines of his own and add another knockout to his undefeated record.

‘IN TROUBLE’ – TROY WILLIAMSON WARNS BRITISH TITLE RIVAL JOSH KELLY

LONDON, NOVEMBER 29 – Troy Williamson wants “no excuses” from Josh Kelly after the dust settles on their British title fight.

Williamson puts his super welterweight belt on the line against Kelly in Newcastle on Friday night and has warned his North East rival that he is in “trouble”.

A confident Kelly has predicted he will dethrone ‘Trojan’ by knockout, but Williamson is at a loss as why his challenger believes he can stop him.

Instead, the champion has reiterated his long-held belief that he will wear Kelly down in the second half of the fight, questioning his opponent’s “heart” and resilience.

“All fighters are confident, and he believes in himself, so good luck to him, but I don’t have a clue why he thinks he’s knocking me out!” Williamson told Probellum.com.

“Maybe his mental coach is putting things into his head, and he is believing it.

“I’m just hoping for the best Josh Kelly on Friday night so that there are no excuses.”

“Josh cuts easily and I don’t think he has a huge heart,” he added.

“When it gets deep and tough, I think he will fold under the pressure.  When the going gets tough, Josh Kelly gets himself out of there.

“Twelve rounds is a long time to box and move.  I’m not stupid, I know he is going to be really, really tricky for the first four or five rounds, but once we get past them, then he is in trouble.”

During intense exchanges, when filming a face-off, Kelly said the pressure was all on Williamson, but the title holder dismissed the claims.

“Despite what he says, there is no pressure on me,” Williamson said.

“He’s put pressure on himself by saying he’s going to win by KO.  But let Josh say what he wants because on Friday night, it’ll just be me and him in the ring, and let’s see what he says when he’s being punched in the face.”

KELLY: “JOSH KELLY BEING THE BRITISH WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION HAS A NICE RING TO IT”

The British Super Welterweight title bout will be decided this Friday December 2 on ‘Judgement Night’ in Newcastle when Sunderland’s Josh Kelly (12-1-1) looks to dethrone current champion Troy Williamson (19-0-1) at the Utilita Arena, live on Channel 5.

Kelly holds the WBO International Super Welterweight title following his unanimous decision win over Lucas Bastida back in July, which prompted the beginning of this bout igniting when he squared off with Williamson in the ring post-fight and showed his desire to take the Darlington man’s Lonsdale belt.

Following a good training camp, Kelly is confident he is in the best condition to end his opponent’s unbeaten record. Williamson is a tremendously talented athlete, but all of the hours committed to the gym are something that ‘PBK’ and his team believe guarantee him a win on Friday night.

“Camp has been nothing short of phenomenal. Every ounce of my being has gone into this fight and what the reward is at the end of it all will make it worth it. I’m used to sacrifice but i have taken it to new heights this time around,” said Kelly.

“I’ve always been a professional and treated my preparations in a way that reflects that, but this is an improved Josh Kelly that is going to tick the British Title off his Christmas list before going on to challenge the world’s best.”

His relationship with coach Adam Booth has been integral in Kelly’s renaissance that has seen him stop Peter Kramer within four rounds in June of this year, along with his win over Bastida the following month.

Booth has made constant appearances alongside some of the country’s greatest boxers and world champions like former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye, along with George Groves, and Kelly is looking to be the next name to such a list. As much as the coach will only want to be a part of someone they have full faith in, Kelly sees his trainer as a tremendously important part of going on to reach the pinnacle of his division.

“What Adam provides is more than just all of his unmatched knowledge and tactics regarding boxing; he lets you know your worth,” said Kelly.

“My self-confidence is never lacking but having a man who is only accustomed to world champion boxers investing the time in you makes you realise what level you are on personally. I have top level facilities and a top-level coach, and you’ll see a top-level performance on Friday night.”

Williamson defeated Ted Cheeseman and then Mason Cartwright to set up this huge clash. Since he fought the latter, he added another win to his record as he stopped David Benitez back in September. Despite this form, Kelly is confident he can take Williamson’s belt, as well his the ‘0’ that sits on the Darlington man’s undefeated record.

“Josh Kelly being the British Super Welterweight Champion has a nice ring to it.”

“Of course I’m confident. I’ve been preparing my whole life for big nights and I’ve already experienced plenty of them too,” continued Kelly. “This is exactly where I want to be and just the first of many belts to add to the collection.”

There is going to be a fairy-tale night in store for one of these athletes, and speaking to Kelly will absolutely make you believe it is going to be the man from Sunderland. This fight lends itself to being the catalyst in the next phase of Kelly’s career, and this is the perfect stage to kickstart the hunt for world honours once again.

“The champion of my country, in my home of the North East, the script is written for a dream night.”

Williamson vs. Kelly for the British Super Welterweight Championship will top a huge night of boxing in the North-East on Friday December 2 at the Utilita Arena, Newcastle. ‘Magic’ Matty Harris looks to continue his destructive stoppage win streak. Former world champion Katharina Thanderz (14-1, 2 KOs), local rising star Ben Marksby (5-0) and Newcastle’s Jordan Barker-Porter (5-1, 1 KO) all feature on this massive evening of action. Super Welterweight prospect Bobby Dalton (2-0), a debut for Super Welterweight Travis Walker, Jarrow’s Ewan Mckenzie (5-0, 3 KOs) and Super Middleweight Joe Laws (12-2, 5 KOs) are also added to make up a stacked card. Co-promoted by Wasserman Boxing and Probellum in association with William Hill and Infinitum Entertainment, all the action will be shown live and free on Channel 5.

NORTH-EAST ‘JUDGEMENT NIGHT’ ANNOUNCES A STACKED CARD FOR WILLIAMSON VS. KELLY ON DECEMBER 3

Aaron Chalmers (1-0) and huge Heavyweight ‘Magic’Matty Harris (3-0, 2 KOs) feature alongside North-East’s rising stars on the epic card headlined by the British Super Welterweight Championship between Darlington’s Troy Williamson (19-0-1, 14KOs) and Sunderland’s Josh Kelly (12-1-1, 7 KOs) on Friday December 2 at the Utilita Arena, Newcastle, live on Channel 5.

This monumental North-East night of action includes hometown favourite Aaron Chalmers (1-0) on the bill as he makes his Newcastle boxing debut on his second professional fight. The former Geordie Shore star and MMA fighter came through his first fight against Alexander Zeledon in Liverpool on June 17, and looks to build on the experiences of that points win in front of his home crowd.

Chalmers will be one of the many talented fighters who command huge support in the North-East, as he enters the squared-circle once more. With the cobwebs dusted off, and the pressure of his debut handled with, it is an ideal opportunity for Chalmers to produce a calculated performance now he is accustomed to fight nights in professional boxing.

Standing in the way of his fairy-tale win is “Rocky” Ryan Broten (0-1). Broten was involved in an all or nothing encounter with the undefeated Paddy Lacey on his pro debut as fight-ending shots were thrown from the very beginning. Broten will now be looking to upset the home crowd as he takes on the former reality star and Geordie favourite, but Chalmers believes a more complete performance will see him do the job.

“The debut got the ball rolling with things, and to come through it with the win and no damage taken was something I’m obviously pleased with,” said Chalmers. “I kept my head and remained calm, but i know what level I can box at, and this huge Newcastle card is my chance to show my progression in the ring.”

“The fans can expect me to come into this calculated yet ready to end things when the opportunity presents itself. I’ve never been the fighter to let things go the distance, and if I can get a knockout win in Newcastle then both me and the fans will be happy people.”

“Newcastle is where i made my name, it’s the place that moulded me into who I am. I know the people, I’m one of the people, and the fans are going to blow the rough off the place.”

Big hitting Heavyweight ‘Magic’ Matty Harris is on the hunt for a third first-round KO win in a row when he takes on Jiri Surmaj over six rounds. Harris put Mait Metsis down twice in the opening round, before ending proceedings in the first round of the fight in Newcastle on April 2. The same destructive formula worked again two months later in Liverpool when Harris produced more magic by flattening Pawel Strykowski with a trademark poleaxing punch.

Standing in the way of the Coventry man’s hat-trick is Surmaj, the hard-hitting Czech Republican who has had an active year claiming two stoppage wins and a split decision victory throughout this calendar year. It will have to be more highlight-reel stuff from Harris as he looks to continue making statements and become the first man to stop Surmaj.

“Newcastle is going to be a massive night of boxing, especially for me,” said Harris. “It’s a step up in competition, but I’ve been stepping up in the gym every single time I enter it. There’s some viral knockouts on my record already, and i’m still young, so just wait and see what the future holds for me.”

Darlington’s Ben Marksby (5-0) can continue his undefeated streak at Super Lightweight when he makes it back-to-back appearances in the North-East. A rising star who continues to add numbers to his loyal following, Marksby faced off against the resilient Rustem Fatkhullin in Newcaslte on July 30 this year where he produced a flawless points win, claiming every round. Marksby has a tendency to target supremacy in each round of his fights as he is impressively yet to drop a round in his career having claimed all 22 of the rounds he has competed in.

The 23-year-old has rightfully earned the title as one of the North-East’s rising stars, and the Super Lightweight could yet add another accolade to his professional career if he claims his first professional stoppage against former African boxing champion Olaide Fijabi (16-5, 8 KOs). Fijabi is a dangerous Nigerian fighter, whose recent losses have only come in the way of talented opposition like the undefeated Jack Rafferty and the talented James Moorcroft.

Fijabi also competed in a tremendous battle with Tom Farrell on June 17, 2022, narrowly losing on the scorecards, 58-57, at the Echo Arena in Liverpool. The dangerous African power-puncher will hope the North-East can host his second win of 2022 however, having claimed his first win by beating Temitope Agboola by unanimous decision in his home country of Nigeria.

“I can’t wait to perform on another big event like this, it just gives me the chance to continue making my name and show the boxing fans i’m a man on a mission,” said Darlington’s Marksby.

“I’m still very young for a boxer, but i know it’ll take blood, sweat and tears throughout every part of my career to reach levels i know i’m destined to reach. I’m coming to put on another display, and i can guarantee the Utilita Arena will be getting their money’s worth.”

Norway’s former world champion, Katharina Thanderz (14-1, 2 KOs) looks to put herself back into title contention with a big win against someone who has shared the ring with multiple world champions, Hungary’s Edina Kiss (15-16, 9 KOs). Thanderz had a blistering start to life as professional as she went unbeaten for over three years and across 13 fights, winning the vacant European Super-Featherweight, the WBC International Lightweight and the European female lightweight titles.

She achieved world honours on November 16, 2019, when she moved to 13-0 against Danila Ramos and won the vacant WBC Interim Super-Featherweight title. This set Thanderz up for a star-studded clash with Britain’s Terri Harper, where the WBC and IBO Super-Featherweight titles would be put on the line. The fight went all the way to the depths in a tremendous female war with Harper claiming the win in the ninth round.

Immediately bouncing back, Thanderz showed her dominance with a six-round decision win on May 13, 2022, in London, and now looks to make another statement to get a shot at reclaiming world titles once more against the heavy-hitting Edina Kiss. Kiss fights for the second time in England, and for the first time in the North-East.

The nine knockouts on the record of Kiss will keep Thanderz’s wits about her throughout the contest. Alongside her power, Kiss’s experience will be another tool in her arsenal having fought former world champion Amanda Serrano twice, as well as the likes of Maureen Shea, Sophie Alisch and Shannon O’Connell.

“I’ve never been to Newcastle before, but I always feel excited about fighting in the UK. The boxing fans are always very supportive,” said Thanderz.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting Edina Kiss in the ring, she’s a warrior that has fought with many fantastic fighters and I can’t wait to put on a great performance on December 2.”

“I want to fight for a world title again, and that means fighting the best possible opposition.”

Jordan Barker-Porter (5-1, 1 KO) returns to Newcastle as she looks to make it five-straight wins in a row. The 28-year-old Lightweight starred in her last bout at the Vertu Motors arena in Newcastle on July 30 where she stopped Bec Connelly in round five during an all-British battle. Barker-Porter steps up in competition once more as she pursues Lightweight title opportunities; Sheila Martinez (3-3, 1 KO) will look to halt any chances of that on December 3 at the Utilita Arena.

The hungry 24-year-old Spaniard could claim a statement win if she can overcome Barker-Porter in her own back yard and with an equal amount of stoppages on their professional records, Barker-Porter will have to be wary of Martinez’s energy. The Spanish lightweight will be feeling confident off the back of dominating in an eight-round fight against Eva Cantos back in July, as well as claiming her first stoppage victory in March of this year. Barker-Porter is undeterred about the task at hand and knows her skillset and support will see her over the line.

“A victory against Martinez will make it five wins in a row for me and continues moving me closer to lightweight honours. She’s got stopping power, she’s young, and she’ll want to come and try and take my moment” said Barker-Porter.

“Newcastle is my home, I am proud to be representing the North-East. I know with the crowd behind me, I’ll have more than enough on the night to get the people off their seats and my hand raised.”

Also featuring on the card is 24-year-old Super Welterweight prospect Bobby Dalton (2-0) as he continues his promising start to professional life, and a professional debut for Super Welterweight Travis Walker as he tests himself early against the well-schooled Nicaraguan Alexander Zeledon.

Jarrow’s Ewan Mckenzie (5-0, 3 KOs) hunts down a fourth consecutive stoppage at Middleweight too, with Super Middleweight Joe Laws (12-2, 5 KOs) looking to bounce back with a big win in front of his fellow North-East people.

Williamson vs. Kelly for the British Super Welterweight Championship will top a huge night of boxing in the North-East on Friday December 2 at the Utilita Arena, Newcastle. Aaron Chalmers fights on home turf, as ‘Magic’ Matty Harris looks to continue his destructive stoppage win streak.

TROY WILLIAMSON VS. JOSH KELLY: ‘JUDGEMENT NIGHT’ LAUNCH PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Heating debate over British gold began as talk of ending careers erupted during today’s launch conference ahead of the epic North East battle for the British Super Welterweight Championship confirmed between Darlington’s Troy Williamson (19-0-1, 14KOs) and Sunderland’s Josh Kelly (12-1-1, 7 KOs) at the Utilita Arena, Newcastle on Friday December 2live on Channel 5.

Please see below for quotes and image access from today’s event:

Troy Williamson:
This is the fight I wanted. I like Josh, we’ve travelled together when we did the junior stuff, but it’s a business at the end of the day, and we’ll be getting down to business on December 2.

I think Josh has had a good ride, and I don’t think he’s anywhere near done regardless of some people saying he might be; he’s still only a young lad. He had a lot of hype about him at the start of his career, but I don’t think he’s propelled as much as people thought he was going to. Now he’s fighting for the British title, and it’s time for me to end his career. I do believe that I will do that.

Josh Kelly:
100% confident, I think this fight has come at a perfect time for me. I’ve boxed on big events, and I’ve been under the bright lights before, so I know what this feels like. I’m more experienced in that department and I know it’s my time now to go and take this British title with both hands.

The North East is quite a small place so you get good sparring where you can. Troy was good sparring, and we came through Team GB where we saw a lot of each other. I know the level of skill and desire I possess which makes this the perfect fight and perfect timing for me to take this. I’m raring to go.

That British title is something that means a lot to anyone in this country. My eyes are also on the big, world titles as well so to get there you have to beat the likes of Troy Williamson.

Ending my career? No that can’t happen. I’m only 28-years-old and I’m still young in this sport and Troy is older, so me winning this British title could be the flip side of what he sees and I could be the one who ends his career. Where is he going after I take that title? There’s not many options for him, and it’s going to be an enjoyable night for me, let me tell you.

Kalle Sauerland:
Two guys, two gladiators, who absolutely love it. I struggle to think of areas of the world, let alone in the UK, where sports means more to them than the North East. It’s going to be a packed house, and the great thing is that it’s for the British title. Something that is so pure in this sport, and naturally leads to bigger things.

You talk about final eliminators, or big fights that break you out onto the world scene, the winner on December 2 WILL have that breakthrough; that’s a given. The reward for these two getting through a very hard training camp will be the platform of Channel 5, a nationwide audience, screened to countries around the world. It’s a huge fight that I believe will not only determine the careers of these fighters, but will entertain the entire nation. I’m just extremely excited to be back in the North East on December 2.

I remember looking at the situation as a fan from the outside, and I’ve never seen a fighter who was built up like a rocket and launched to 100 like he was. He took one loss early in his career just like many world champions I’ve promoted before, Wladimir Klitschko lost multiple times before going on to defend his heavyweight belts for a decade. I thought Josh losing once early in his career was exaggerated, it was a bit like the end of the sun and the moon all at once. Josh Kelly then is a completely different fighter to Josh Kelly now. The great thing about this British title fight is that it’s a true step forward for one of these, but ultimately we know what Josh can do. He’s in the hands of Adam Booth, who I rate as one of the best trainers over the past decades, and I have complete faith in them.

Sam Jones:
As soon as the fight started to get mentioned I think Troy rang everybody he could to get this fight on. Everybody loves these big domestic fights. I’ve known Troy a long time and he has never turned any opponent down, and he wasn’t going to start with Josh Kelly.

There’s a lot of big fights not happening in boxing at the minute for one reason or another,  but both guys need a lot of credit for making this fight happen because they could have very easily gone down separate routes. They both took the fight, I fully expect Troy to win, and it’s going to be a fantastic atmosphere. I’ve been involved in a few fights up in the North East and they really back their own whether it’s football or any other sport, I just want them to back the event and make sure they come out because it’s going to be a special night for the North East.

Troy is always in entertaining fights. He hasn’t tasted a defeat yet, but win, lose, or draw; he’s in entertaining fights. I believe all the pressure is on Josh in this fight. No one should be judged on one defeat, and Josh Kelly is a good boxer who still may go on to big things. However, if you look at what people thought he would achieve when he first started then you’d say he hasn’t hit them heights. If you look at the bookies favourite for this, I’d say it’s probably Kelly. When it gets hard in there though, Troy gets better.

Adam Booth:
This has come at the right time for the fans especially, they’re two fighters who are both in their prime. They’re two guys who want to test themselves and see how good they can be and put themselves against the best; so this is definitely a match made in heaven.

There was no hesitation from our side. I had a call from the boxing board of control to say they’re putting out some nominations and do we want the fight? I phoned Josh who straight away said yes; it took less than five minutes to get this confirmed with the board.

WILLIAMSON AND KELLY FACE OFF IN NORTH EAST ‘JUDGEMENT NIGHT’ ON DECEMBER 2 IN NEWCASTLE

It’s title time on the Tyne, with the epic North-East battle for the British Super Welterweight Championship confirmed between Darlington’s Troy Williamson (19-0-1, 14KOs) and Sunderland’s Josh Kelly (12-1-1, 7 KOs) at the Utilita Arena, Newcastle on Friday December 2, live on Channel 5.

Kelly expressed his desire to compete for Williamson’s Lonsdale belt as the two came face-to-face in July after ‘PBK’ beat Lucas Bastida to claim the WBO International Super Welterweight Title on July 30 at Newcastle’s Vertu Arena.

With the champion equally keen to get the fight on, Williamson since added a win of his own to his undefeated record as he stopped David Benitez in the sixth round on September 17 at the University of Bolton Stadium live on Channel 5.

“We’re two fighters flying the flag for the North East, but only one of us holds that British title,” said Williamson. “Every fight is going to be a tough fight at this level, especially when belts are on the line.

“I’m the champ, I’m undefeated, and I don’t think there’s anything he can throw at me that’ll stop my reign as Super Welterweight king as I move on to bigger and better things.  One thing is for sure, and that’s fireworks.”

“This is set to be one of the North-East’s biggest fights in recent memory, and you can see exactly why,” said Kelly.

“Troy is British Champion for a reason and he’s obviously a good fighter. However, he’s just another obstacle in the way of me achieving what I’m destined to achieve, and he’ll be taken care of on December 2.”

After producing a stoppage win over Ted Cheeseman to become the British Champion in October of last year, Williamson has since defended his title against Mason Cartwright to set up this hugely anticipated clash against Kelly.

“The last time we ventured to the North-East, the people clearly showed their passion and love for boxing,” saidWasserman’s Head of Global Boxing, Kalle Sauerland.

“This time it is on another level as we bring one of the most hotly anticipated domestic dust-ups available. Two of the North-East’s own battling it out to boast the title of Britain’s best. Newcastle is about to host one of its biggest nights in the sport, and I cannot wait to be in the arena for an electric atmosphere come fight night.”

Williamson vs Kelly  for the British Super Welterweight Championship tops a huge night of boxing in the North-East on Friday December 2 at the Utilita Arena, Newcastle with more major fights to be announced soon. TROY WILLIAMSON TO DEFEND BRITISH TITLE AGAINST JOSH KELLY

LONDON, SEPTEMBER 17 – Troy Williamson and Josh Kelly will collide in a British title fight that fans have been craving.

Williamson puts his super welterweight crown on the line against former amateur star Kelly in December, on a massive night of boxing in Newcastle.

The British champion overcame David Benitez in Bolton this evening to rubber-stamp the title showdown, with the date and venue to be confirmed in due course.

The mouth-watering clash pits North East rivals against each other with Darlington’s Williamson defending his British belt for a second time, against Sunderland hero Kelly.

Probellum fighter Williamson is one of the most exciting fighters in British boxing after engaging in back-to-back Fight of the Year contenders and his clash with Kelly promises to be a domestic dust-up you do not want to miss.

The ‘Trojan’ is on a roll after title wins over Ted Cheeseman and Mason Cartwright while ‘Pretty Boy’ Kelly has been rebuilding his career after a punishing defeat to David Avanesyan last year.

Williamson was left deeply unimpressed with his rival’s last performance and has promised to wear down and stop the 2016 Olympian.

Troy Williamson said: “I’m so happy Josh has agreed to fight me because this is a monster of a fight for British boxing and it will be shown live to a huge television audience.

“But Josh, mark my words, you have made a huge mistake because you have never faced anyone like me, and I will grind you down and stop you.

“Your Olympic pedigree will count for nothing when the going gets tough and I drag you into deep waters.”

Richard Schaefer, President of Probellum, said: “There is no question about Troy Williamson’s status as one of Britain’s most exciting fighters because he delivers drama by the bucket load. “And this brilliant British title fight with Josh Kelly promises to be another Fight of the Year contender to add to Troy’s collection. “I was ringside to see Troy get up off the floor and defeat Cartwright on points at Probellum Throwdown and I know this will surpass that fight for action and entertainment.”

KELLY GRINDS DOWN BASTIDA TO BE CROWNED WBO INTERNATIONAL CHAMPION

Josh Kelly overcame a tough Lucas Bastida to enter the world rankings and claim the WBO International Super Welterweight Championship. It was a fiery encounter before the bell had even sounded, and after yesterdays weigh-in antics that saw the two main event fighters exchanging words, Bastida walked to the ring in a Newcastle United football shirt to antagonise Sunderland’s Kelly even further.

With his name upon the banners, Kelly did not disappoint the Channel 5 audience and all those in attendance at the Vertu Motors Arena on a fantastic Wasserman Boxing fight night. ‘PBK’ had a job to do as he continued his climb up the rankings, but had clearly been working on all the physical and technical aspects of his game to grind down his Argentine opponent.

“I’ve said i only want to be in big fights, and that kid tonight has only lost once, and that was due to a cut. It wasn’t even a legitimate loss,” said Kelly, live on Channel 5 post-fight.

“He’s a strong Argentine who wanted to push forward, with a marauding style where he tried swinging shots from everywhere. I needed to keep my discipline in there tonight, and that’s exactly what i did.”

The eyes were on the North East fighter fighter even more so when British champion, and potential opponent, Troy Williamson entered the arena with his Newcastle shirt on. Asked about this being the next move for Team Kelly, there was no denying if they did, or didn’t, want this fight.

“We absolutely want that fight. I’m here for all the big fights and that includes Troy,” he said. “I’ve told Adam (Booth) and the rest of the team that it’s a fight we all definitely want to see.”

The post-fight interview between Channel 5, Kalle Sauerland and Josh Kelly was to be quickly interrupted by Williamson, as he gave his opinion on the future encounter.

“It’s a fight that represents the future of British boxing, and i’m up for it 100%,” he said.

“Lets get it on.”

KELLY EYES DREAM STADIUM OF LIGHT FIGHT

Sunderland AFC’s Dan Neil showed his support for Josh Kelly (11-1-1, 7 KOs) as they walked around the Stadium of Light together, reminiscing about sporting dreams and memories from the past, present, and for the future.

Kelly leads a star-studded line up as he continues his World Title pursuit with a mouth-watering clash against top Argentinian contender Lucas Bastida (18-1-1, 10 KOs) for the WBO International Super Welterweight Championship as part of a huge night of action on Saturday July 30 at the Vertu Motors Arena, live on Channel 5.

Kelly returned home ahead of his headline fight on the North East takeover card as he looks to claim the belt and move into the world rankings. A trip down memory lane at the home of his beloved Sunderland AFC reminded the former Olympian of where it all began and what he’s fighting for.

“When I was a kid, I was playing for Sunderland,” he said. “You have them aspirations to play for Sunderland and you think to yourself ‘ It could be me one day’. I was obviously doing my boxing side-by-side. When I was dieting to keep my weight down as a fighter, these kids were growing so much bigger and were so mature that I just couldn’t keep up with them at football which led me to side with the boxing. I’m fighting now instead of football, but it’s nice to be back (at the stadium).”

“The possibility of fighting here is mental. It felt a bit like a Conor McGregor moment when he mentioned manifesting all this stuff, I feel like it’s starting to come to a head now. I’ve been thinking about fighting here for so long, I’ve got it written down and things like that.”

“Walking out onto that pitch, I could see the place full up and it would be absolutely amazing. That would tick a massive box in my career if I could, it would be like a bucket list thing for me.”

Sunderland’s Dan Neil spoke in length about the comparisons and contrasts between the footballer and the boxer. The topic turned to weight and dieting, and it was a simple response for Neil when he was asked if he fancied the fighters diet.

“I don’t fancy the cutting weight, definitely not,” chuckled Neil. “I’ve seen videos of them cutting weight and it isn’t for me one bit.”

It wasn’t only Neil’s respect for Kelly’s cutting regime that was apparent, as he could visibly see how game and prepared the Sunderland fighter was.

“I’ve had a good day with Josh. It’s the first time I’ve met him, but it has been great.”

“He seems very focused, he looks in great shape, he looks sharp, he looks ready,” continued Neil. “We’ve been talking about his training camp and his weight and he’s pretty much on point with it all, he just looks raring to go. Hopefully he can bring home the win.”

To pack out this stadium is a very real possibility for Kelly, but first he’s aiming to make it worthwhile by bringing a title the any potential stadium bout. He has never hidden his ambitions of world honours and being the number one of the division. His preparations have reflected his goals, surrounding himself with the elite.

“I’m mixing with the worlds best all the time in sparring, and I’m sharing the ring with all the top guys, and I can hold my own with everyone,” he said. “I know where I’m at in the gym, I just need to do it on fight night now. I’ve got true belief in myself that everything that has happened is in the past and I’m moving on to some big things, especially at 154lbs. I feel so strong, and healthy and fit; just powerful at this weight.”

Now the soundest he has been both body and mind, Kelly is thriving in this new chapter at Super Welterweight.  Helping him into this new division are his family and friends who have always backed the Sunderland fighter.

No greater reflection of this could be his grandparents, who joined him at the Stadium of Light as he was welcomed with open arms into the club as he talked about the city and what it means to him.

“My grandparents are a huge support, they’ve always been there for me.”

“You walk the streets, and you feel like you’re home. I know everywhere, and all the childhood memories come back to you.”

It has been a nostalgic trip for Kelly as he looked back upon the journey that his lead him to this moment. A tough Argentine in Bastida looks to be one of his toughest tests to date, but the North East fighter remains confident that it is all about his performance on the night.

It was a superb display against the wily Peter Kramer last time out. This time, there is extra incentive with the WBO belt on the line, and a position in the rankings that leaves the world titles vividly in Kelly’s sights.

“It’s a WBO international title I’m fighting for and it gets you into the top 15, it gets you straight into them rankings,” he said. “Once you start fighting amongst that then the belts start to appear in your sights. I believe I can push myself to the top and get myself into a mandatory position to get a shot at that world title.”

“The best version of me beats the best version of him, so I just have to turn up.”

The North East takeover is coming as Josh Kelly (11-1-1, 7 KOs) vs. Lucas Bastida (18- 1-1, 10 KOs) headline for the WBO International Super Welterweight Championship on an electric fight night. TWO TITLE BOUTS, OLYMPIANS AND TOP-TIER NORTH EAST TALENT CONFIRMED FOR WASSERMAN BOXING’S NORTH EAST TAKEOVER

Josh Kelly (11-1-1, 7 KOs) leads a star-studded line up as he continues his World Title pursuit with a mouth-watering clash against top Argentinian contender Lucas Bastida (18-1-1, 10 KOs) for the WBO International Super Welterweight Championship as part of a huge night of action on Saturday July 30 at the Vertu Motors Arena, live on Channel 5.

Kelly returns to the ring following an impressive stoppage victory over Peter Kramer on June 17 in Liverpool, which was watched by over 1 million viewers on Channel 5. The Sunderland boxer, who represented Team GB at the 2016 Rio Olympics and has previously held Commonwealth and WBA International Welterweight Titles, can expect one of his toughest career tests when he takes on ‘El Tornado’, the current South American Middleweight Champion, who will be coming to spoil the party and catapult himself into World Title contention.

Also on the card is Harlem Eubank (14-0, 6 KOs) who will be looking to establish himself as the latest star name from his famous boxing family. The nephew of British boxing legend Chris Eubank Snr and cousin of Chris Eubank Jr had initially been lined up to face Tom Farrell, but will now meet Mexico’s Eliot Chavez (11-4-1, 6 KOs) in a hotly anticipated Super Lightweight showdown after Farrell’s withdrawal due to a positive COVID-19 test.

Joining Kelly and Eubank in action, Tokyo 2020 Olympic Silver Medallist Pat McCormack (1-0, 1 KO) goes in search of his second professional victory against Dimitri Trenel (8-1, 4 KOs). One of the North East’s most exciting boxing prospects, McCormack has an unbelievable pedigree from his time in the amateurs. Alongside his Olympic Silver medal, he has claimed European and Commonwealth Gold and World Silver medals. Now, looking to prove himself in the paid ranks, the 27-year-old cannot wait to showcase his skills and add another win to his record.

Another title fight features on the stacked North East takeover card, as one of Birmingham’s best, Raza Hamza (16-0, 7 KOs), competes for the IBO International Featherweight Championship against Roberto Rodriguez Nucamendi (13-5, 10 KOs) over 10 rounds of elite boxing action.

Fans can also look forward to a battle of the undefeated Heavyweights as undefeated prospects Hosea Stewart (2-0) and Franklin Ignatius (3-0, 1 KO) square off, plus an array of local fighters ready to prove the North East as a hotbed for boxing talent.

The stage is set for Newcastle’s Jordan Barker-Porter (4-1) to make it three-straight wins as the 28-year-old Lightweight returns to action for an all-British battle in her home city. Her opponent, Bec Connolly (3-14) will be looking to call upon her vast experience, having faced current world champion Natasha Jonas, as well as former world champion Terri Harper.

Darlington’s Ben Marksby (4-0) can continue his undefeated streak at Super Lightweight when he fights for the first time in the North East. A popular fighter with a loyal following, Marksby faces off against the resilient Rustem Fatkhullin (8-37, 3 KOs)

2018 Commonwealth Games Gold medallist Lisa Whiteside (3-0, 1 KO) will look to emulate her previous performance by producing another stoppage win in her Flyweight bout, when she faces off against a well-schooled fighter in Serbia’s Jasmina Nad (11-24-5, 4 KOs).

Straight out of Rocky IV, Heavyweight ‘Drago’ Steve Robinson (4-1) will be hunting for another blockbuster finish when the 6’7” giant from Newcastle looks to provide a finish worthy of his nickname. Future prospect Kai Richmond (1-0) will also be aiming to get the crowd on their feet after a comprehensive professional debut for the 22-year-old from Spennymoor earlier this year.

Tickets for Wasserman Boxing’s North East takeover are on sale now, priced £40, £80, £100 and £200, and available via www.wassermanboxing.com.

KELLY: I’LL BE LOOKING AT THAT LIST OF WORLD RANKED FIGHTERS AND TARGETING WHOEVER I NEED TO FACE TO GET TO THEM BELTS

Josh Kelly (11-1-1, 7 KOs) is in confident mood ahead of his WBO International Super Welterweight Championship fight against Lucas Bastida (18-1-1, 10 KOs) on Saturday 30 July at the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle, live on Channel 5.

‘PBK’ has his sights set on the top honours boxing has to offer, and knows that a statement win in his home of the North East will trigger the start of his plans to upset the apple-cart amongst the top of the division.

For now, he is living in the present, and his eyes are on the very serious fighter that is Argentina’s Bastida. This will be Bastida’s first fight in this country, and Kelly plans on using home advantage to hit the headlines with an eye-catching performance.

“I’m coming to make noise in the North East first, then after a statement win against a tough opponent like Bastida, I’ll be happy to take on whoever wants it,” said Kelly.

“My skillset is at an elite level. We’ve been sharpening tools for a while now and once I’m crowned the WBO International champion, I’ll be looking at that list of world ranked fighters and targeting whoever I need to face to get to them belts.”

Having gone through gruelling preparations for scheduled fights in London and Liverpool, Kelly will at least have home-comforts this time around. A proud Sunderland lad, he does not overlook the chance to have the support of the people in the North East.

“I’ve said it before, that I will never take for granted the opportunity to fight in the North East,” he said. “I can’t wait for fight time now. We’re a week out, everything has gone to plan and I’m looking forward to putting all the preparation into practice.”

Kelly has always been a son of British boxing, who is destined for the top. Momentum continues to build as he soars in an upward trajectory, and he wants to match his potential and ambition with big domestic battles to get fans off their seats.

Should he pass the test of Bastida, there have been plenty of mumblings regarding future opponents that would seriously excite this country’s fans, and admirers from around the globe.

“I’m not going to look past my opponent, but I have full belief in myself that if I bring my A-game, then it’s only going one way,” said Kelly.

“There’s been a lot of noise surrounding potential fights, stadium-worthy fights, and I’ll happily take care of business in front of a packed out arena against anyone.”

The North East takeover is coming as Josh Kelly (11-1-1, 7 KOs) vs. Lucas Bastida (18-1-1, 10 KOs) headline for the WBO International Super Welterweight Championship on an electric fight night. Olympic hero Pat McCormack (1-0, 1 KO) also stars, alongside Harlem Eubank (14-0, 6 KOs) as he continues his title charge against Tom ‘Fazza’ Farrell (21-5, 5 KOs). Heavyweights Hosea Stewart (2-0) and Franklin Ignatius (3-0, 1 KO) guaranteed to produce fireworks amongst top local talent such as ‘Drago’ Steve Robinson (4-1, 3 KOs), Kai Richmond (1-0), Ben Marksby (4-0), Lisa Whiteside (3-0, 1KO) and Jordan Barker-Porter (3-1) on an unforgettable night in the North East. Wasserman Boxing heads to the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle for a massive night of free-to-air boxing on Saturday July 30, live on Channel 5 in association with William HillNuman and Infinitum Entertainment.

LUCAS BASTIDA: STABBINGS, LEGACY, AND THE BATTLE TO THE TOP OF BOXING

Lucas Bastida (18-1-1, 10 KOs) has had to overcome some of the most shocking of circumstances to put himself in a position to fight Josh Kelly (11-1-1, 7 KOs) for the WBO International Super Welterweight belt on Saturday 30 July at the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle, live on Channel 5.

You will seldom find someone more mentally and physically strong than Bastida, who is prepared to leave his homeland of Argentina to fight overseas for the first time in front of his opponents own crowd.

The North East takeover could be threatened by this dangerous Argentine, who is calling upon his impenetrable will and his peak conditioning to show why he has aspirations of becoming a world champion.

“I’m in boxing to achieve my dream of becoming a world champion, and leaving my surname remembered and respected,” said Bastida. “I really appreciate this opportunity to fight for the WBO International belt in Newcastle.

“Winning this means everything and that’s why I’m prepared to travel abroad to compete. I have huge support from my family and my friends, they have a lot of faith in me.”

Faith is not something that has always been present in the life of ‘El Tornado’. He went out to meet a group of friends, and found himself being held at knife-point by a mugger with a butchers knife.

After doing his upmost to protect himself, he miraculously escaped the attacker but left with injuries that put his boxing career in serious jeopardy.

“It was around 5 years ago when someone tried to rob me, and they stabbed me in the arm which cut three tendons and a nerve. At that point I thought my career was over,” he said.

“Doctors had no faith I would return to boxing, but I worked hard to rehab and make it back. I had to wait 12 months to fight again, and I boxed with a lot of pain in my hand, but I won. Since then, I took this as my second chance in boxing and I’ll give my best all the way to the very end.”

Now he comes up against Sunderland’s Kelly who will be looking to overcome this Argentine fighter who has lived a life of bouncing back when the odds are against him.

Having come through the other side of a past full of trials and tribulations, Bastida believes he is in his prime and ready to throw down on fight night.

“This is my first fight abroad, and I’m excited to travel to the UK and get to test myself against someone like Josh Kelly. I’ll go to the UK in the best condition I’ve been in. I know I have strong hands, I just need to be patient and wait for my moment.”

Unfazed by the travel, unfazed by Kelly’s home crowd, and unfazed about anything other than appreciating his life; Bastida is a man with nothing to lose. Entering the main event at the Vertu Motors Arena, the Argentine is up for the task of being locked in their with no one but his opponent.

“I’m a fighter in life. I’ve been in this sport a long-time training to be someone, I have a one year old daughter too and I fight for her,” he said.

“We are aware that we are going to his home, but in the ring it is just me and him. When the bell rings, we will see who’s better.”

The North East takeover is coming as Josh Kelly (11-1-1, 7 KOs) vs. Lucas Bastida (18-1-1, 10 KOs) headline for the WBO International Super Welterweight Championship on an electric fight night. TROY WILLIAMSON URGES JOSH KELLY TO AGREE TO ‘HUGE’ BRITISH TITLE FIGHT

LONDON, JULY 15 – Troy Williamson has told Josh Kelly to agree to a mouth-watering British title showdown instead of chasing “easy” fights like his rivals have.

The British Boxing Board of Control have ordered Williamson to defend his super welterweight crown against Kelly, after James Metcalf pulled out of a fight with the champion.

Bids to promote the fight must be submitted by August 10.

Williamson, from Darlington, and Sunderland’s Kelly could now clash in a “huge” fight for the North East of England and ‘Trojan’ – one of British’s boxing most exciting fighters – hopes his rival doesn’t try and avoid him.

“It’s a great fight, especially for the North East,” Williamson told Probellum.com.

“I’ve known Josh since our amateur days and we are friends outside of the ring, but that will have to be put to one side if we fight.

“He’s got all the talent in the world and a big following, so this would be a huge occasion.  I posted on social media after hearing the news and everybody is already getting excited for this fight.

“I just hope Josh takes the fight and isn’t like all the others who just want easy fights.”

But Williamson has already warned Kelly about what lies in store for him if the fight happens.

“I’m a proven 12 round fighter who is strong at the weight,” said the British champ.

“And as everyone has seen, I get stronger as the fight goes on.  I am a lot stronger and fitter than Josh and that will tell over the distance.”

On Liverpool’s Metcalf pulling out a fight with Williamson, the Probellum man said: “I’m disappointed JJ Metcalf withdrew from our fight.

“He’s said that fighting me for the British title is a backwards step but I don’t blame Eddie Hearn [his promoter] for not wanting to put him in with me, I’ve already stopped his other super welterweight fighter, Ted Cheeseman, and I would have done the same to Metcalf.”

WBO INTERNATIONAL TITLE CONFIRMED FOR KELLY VS. BASTIDA

Josh Kelly (11-1-1, 7 KOs) will be counting on the support of the North East to get him over the line when he competes against Lucas Bastida (18-1-1, 10 KOs) for the WBO International Super Welterweight Championship on Saturday July 30 at the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle, free-to-air and live on Channel 5.

This is an unbelievable chance for one of these fighters to break into the world rankings with the WBO. After a dominant performance against Peter Kramer, Kelly will look to carry that confidence to cement himself into the world rankings.

Alongside the reward of a world ranking also comes big fights. With the division being held up by undisputed champion Jermell CharloKelly will be looking to reintroduce himself dramatically onto the global scene of the super welterweight division.

Now Kelly not only has the thrill of fighting in front of his own, but a title on the line certainly adds any final elements of motivation needed. Having been given the news, Kelly was elated and confident that this was only the start of big things to come.

“I’m buzzing, and I’m ready. There’s no reason to sugar-coat the fact that my opponent will be putting even more into training to come and try to cause an upset,” said Kelly. “We are covering all bases in camp, and when you have world title aspirations you make sure you’re preparing like a world champion.”

He continues, “The WBO belt adds that additional spice to things, and it’s about me going out there and being Josh Kelly that will see it leaving the arena with me in front of my friends and family. We are the North East, and we don’t do things in half-measures. On fight night, i’ll be there to push the pace and show why this will be the first belt of many.”

Bastida will be providing a very real threat to the title aspirations of Sunderland’s ‘PBK’. At 25-years-old the Argentine has had additional rounds, but holds a similar record to Kelly in only having one loss and one draw on his record. The narrow margins between the fighters guarantee a technical and excellent battle between two men looking to give it all to claim the belt and move on to endless possibilities in their next fight.

After two hugely successful terrestrial television shows, the announcement of a title promises to entertain all those in attendance at the Vertu Motors Arena as well as the Channel 5 audience. Wasserman’s Head of Global Boxing, Kalle Sauerland, expressed his delight for Kelly and the doors it could open to get the North East boy back where he belongs.

“Josh Kelly fighting for titles feels like one of the most natural things in boxing,” said Sauerland. “His pedigree and his ability rightfully have him fighting for the WBO International belt when we blow the roof off the Vertu Motors Arena. This will stick Josh’s name exactly where it belongs and sets up an exciting future where massive fights can be made for our former Olympian. Newcastle, be ready!”

The North East takeover is coming as Josh Kelly (11-1-1, 7 KOs) vs. Lucas Bastida (18-1-1, 10 KOs) headline on an electric fight night. Olympic hero Pat McCormack (1-0, 1 KO) also stars, alongside Harlem Eubank (14-0, 6 KOs) as he continues his title charge against Tom ‘Fazza’ Farrell (21-5, 5 KOs). Heavyweights Hosea Stewart (2-0) and Franklin Ignatius (3-0, 1 KO) guaranteed to produce fireworks amongst top local talent such as Mark Dickinson (3-0, 1 KO), ‘Drago’ Steve Robinson (4-1, 3 KOs), Kai Richmond (1-0), Ben Marksby (4-0), Lisa Whiteside (3-0, 1KO) and Jordan Barker-Porter (3-1) on an unforgettable night in the North East. Wasserman Boxing heads to the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle for a massive night of free-to-air boxing on Saturday July 30, live on Channel 5 in association with William HillNuman and Infinitum Entertainment.

JOSH KELLY OPPONENT CONFIRMED FOR NORTH EAST TAKEOVER LIVE ON CHANNEL 5

After the dismantling of Peter Kramer in Liverpool, Josh Kelly (11-1-1, 7 KOs) wastes no time in returning to action as he leads the North East takeover on July 30 in Newcastle. Live on Channel 5, Kelly faces one of the toughest challenges of his career when he faces ‘El Tornado’ Lucas Bastida (18-1-1, 10 KOs).

The calculated and methodical win for Kelly last time out showed the boxing intelligence of Sunderland’s ‘PBK’, but Bastida will be coming to provide a much sterner test at Super Welterweight. Having suffered defeat only once, the Argentine fighter will be coming to try and spoil the party in the main event.

It will be an eagerly contested fight, as both men hold similar records. Both fighters suffering one loss and one draw, as well as sharing around a 50% KO ratio too. Both men also in their twenties, with Kelly the more experienced at 28-years-old. It is the opportunity for two young and hungry fighters to steal the show on an electric Saturday July 30 event in Newcastle, and put themselves into contention for serious title honours.

“He is a tough South American who has plenty of experience for a fighter who is 25-years-old. To only have one loss on his record shows how tough he is, there’s no doubt he’ll be coming to win,” said Kelly.

“He’s someone who is going to give me the hard rounds I need to get back into the mix for big fights and major titles. It’s very much the same from me though – I’m coming to show my class and I’ll be looking to get him out, 100%.”

Argentine Bastida will be coming to conduct his own takeover as he’ll be looking to capitalise on a TKO win in a South American title bout in his last fight. He will also be confident in the fact he will be the taller fighter, as the 25-year-old stands at 6’1” and edges Kelly with 8 more rounds under his belt.

After analysing the career of Kelly, it is Bastida who believes he will come out on top having found what he believes to be is the winning formula for this fight.

“Josh Kelly has Olympic experience, he’s a good boxer and very fast. I saw in his fight against Avanesyan that he got knocked down, and then he got stopped, so I think the key to victory will be to go to war from the beginning of the fight,” said Bastida.

“For me this is my first fight abroad, I’m a warrior in life so I’ll be going to war as soon as the bell rings.”

Following the format of his nickname, “El Tornado” will be looking to arrive and cause as much destruction as possible before moving on. Kelly has stated before that he is back with vengeance, and will be happy to weather any condition that the Argentine throws his way.

It is guaranteed to be an unbelievable atmosphere at the Vertu Motors Arena, and the main event promises to blow the roof off when two warriors meet to mark one of these impressive records with a rare blemish.

A Super Lightweight showdown has been added to the card, with Harlem Eubank (14-0, 6KOs) squaring off against Tom ‘Fazza’ Farrell (21-5, 5 KOs). Both fighters will be brimming with confidence off the back of wins in their last bouts.

Farrell defeated a potential Nigerian nightmare in Olaide Fijabi at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool earlier this month, as he answered all the questions to outpoint his opponent in a hard-fought contest. Having come through the six-round fight, Farrell will be looking to call upon a similar approach to overcome an undefeated Harlem Eubank.

A second-round KO proved to be one of the highlights of the night in London on May 13 when Eubank caught his opponent flush to end the fight against Sean Dodd. The Brighton man continues heading in an upward trajectory in a professional career that is yet to taste defeat.

With each performance, Eubank continues to show his development and ever-growing intentions for bigger fights and bigger honours. The 28-year-old will now be looking for another statement win against a tough Farrell to put his name in contention for titles.

The big boys join the North East takeover also, as Hosea Stewart (2-0) faces Franklin Ignatius (3-0, 1 KO) in the Heavyweight division. Zero losses on each man’s record, and the ‘0’ has to go as two young fighters look to put their name in lights at the Vertu Motors Arena.

Stewart will be going in search of the first knockout win of his fledgling professional boxing career as the 24-year-old will be looking to steal the limelight at the North East takeover. Ignatius will be coming to grab headlines of his own and add another knockout to his undefeated record.

The North East takeover is coming as Josh Kelly (11-1-1, 7 KOs) Vs. Lucas Bastida (18-1-1, 10 KOs) headlines on an electric fight night, featuring Harlem Eubank (14-0, 6 KOs) as he continues his charge towards titles against Tom ‘Fazza’ Farrell (21-5, 5 KOs). A boxing debut in Newcastle for Aaron Chalmers (1-0) as he looks to star in his second professional fight in front of a packed out arena in his home city, with Hosea Stewart (2-0) and Franklin Ignatius (3-0, 1 KO) set to shake the arena in a Heavyweight contest guaranteed to produce fireworks. Wasserman Boxing heads to the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle for a massive night of free-to-air boxing on Saturday July 30, live on Channel 5 in association with William HillNuman and Infinitum Entertainment.
