GCP Signs Former Champion Kendall Holt to a Promotional Contract

Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions proudly announces the signing of WBO Junior Welterweight Champion Kendall “Rated R” Holt to a promotional contract.

Holt (28-6, 16 KOs), from Paterson, New Jersey, hasn’t been in the ring in over two years, but is eager to get back in the swing of things and take on the world’s top welterweights.

“I’m excited about having another opportunity to fight and become champion again,” said Holt. “I’m super thankful and grateful to Sarah Fina and Greg Cohen for giving me this opportunity.”

Holt won the WBO Championship with an electrifying knockout of then-champion Ricardo Torres in 2008. His fast hands and superior punching power have put him in several electrifying fights against many of the world’s best fighters.

“I’m thrilled to have him aboard,” said Greg Cohen. “Kendall has been resting and rejuvenating and now he’s 100% ready to get back in the mix at 147 lbs. Being from New Jersey, I’ve always been a big fan of his and I’m very excited to be working with him now. Kendall is always in great fights and still has the speed, reflexes and power to beat anyone in front of him on any given night.”

Holt says he plans on taking things slowly this year, so that next year he can stage an assault on the top of the division.

“My plans is to shake off the rust a couple of times this year. Then shake up the welterweight division next year by challenging the major players.”

JAVIER MOLINA FRACTURES RIGHT HAND THOMAS WILLIAMS JR. VS. CORNELIUS WHITE NEW ESPN FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS MAIN EVENT ON JANUARY 24

Sherman Oaks, CA (January 9, 2014) Highly regarded welterweight prospect Javier Molina suffered a fractured right hand in sparring on Wednesday afternoon and has withdrawn from his ESPN Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra™ showdown on JANUARY 24 with former world champion Kendall Holt it was announced today by Dan Goossen, President of Goossen Tutor Promotions.

The new main event for the ESPN Friday Night Fights/”Little Creek Brawl IV” event at the Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, Washington, will be a ten round NABO Light Heavyweight Championship clash between top undefeated prospect Thomas Williams Jr. of Fort Washington, Maryland and Houston based world-contender Cornelius White.

“It’s truly an unfortunate situation for Javier who has been saddled with hand injuries since the beginning of his professional career,” said Goossen. “This is the fourth fracture of his hands he’s had to endure. I feel terrible with what this good young man has had to overcome so early in his career.”

“Javier went straight to the renowned Kerlan-Jobe Center in Los Angeles where he was examined by hand specialist Dr. Steve Shin who has scheduled his surgery for next Tuesday,” said Arnulfo Bravo, manager of Molina. “We are taking every step to ensure the best treatment for his eventual return to the ring. Dr. Shin believes he’ll be ready to return to training between three and four months.”

Continued Goossen, “Boxing fans have seen many fighters suffer similar hand injuries as Javier’s and still become world champions. One of the most prominent is Paulie Malignaggi who has had to overcome numerous hand injuries, eventually overcoming them and attaining a highly successful career.”

About the new main event, Goossen stated, “Tom Brown moved quickly to line up a very strong light heavyweight title fight between up-and-coming Thomas Williams Jr. and heavy-handed Cornelius White.”

“Williams is looking to continue his ascent towards becoming a world champion and White will be looking to get back on the winning track following his fight with world champion Sergey Kovalev.”

The 26 year-old southpaw Williams, 15-0-0 (10 KOs) is coming off a sensational 2013 campaign with four outstanding wins. Most recently he dominated former world title challenger Yusaf Mack over ten rounds winning a unanimous decision on November 26 in Sunrise, Florida.

On May 18, 2013, Williams won a decision over perennial contender Otis Griffith at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Williams is currently world ranked #12 by the International Boxing Federation.

Known as “Da Beast,” the hard-hitting White has compiled a record of 21-2-0 with sixteen knockouts over his six-year professional career.

Prior to his loss to Kovalev, the 32-year-old White was riding a five bout winning streak with strong wins over top prospects Yordanis Despaigne and Dmitry Sukhotsky in addition to a decision win over Otis Griffith.

White is also world ranked by the International Boxing Federation at #14 in the world.

“While we are disappointed for Javier Molina, we had been seriously considering broadcasting the Williams-White match as part of that show so we are still expecting an outstanding night. We think Thomas Williams is a fighter that ESPN fans will want to get to know and we’re confident that Cornelius White will want to prove that sentiment wrong,” said ESPN’s Sr. Director of Programing & Acquisitions Brian Kweder.

“Little Creek Brawl IV” will open the ESPN broadcast with former World Champion Rico Ramos (22-3, 12 KOs) taking on upset-minded Jonathan Arellano (14-2-2, 3 KOs) in a 10-round Featherweight Bout.

Advance tickets priced at $40 can be purchased by calling (800) 667-7711 or online at www.Little-Creek.com. Doors will open on the night of the event at 4:30 p.m. with the first bell at 5:00 p.m. For more information and directions to the Little Creek Casino Resort, please visit their website at www.Little-Creek.com

JAVIER MOLINA V. KENDALL HOLT RICO RAMOS V. JONATHAN ARRELLANO ESPN FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS JANUARY 24, 2014

javiermolinawins206
Sherman Oaks, CA (December 13, 2013) ESPN Friday Night Fights heads back to the
Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, WA on January 24, 2014 as hot Southern California based prospect Javier Molina battles former world champion Kendall Holt in the ten round welterweight main event.

Presented by Goossen Tutor Promotions, the event will be shown live on ESPN2 at 6 p.m. Tickets for “LITTLE CREEK BRAWL IV” start as low as $30 and can be purchased by calling (800) 667-7711 or online at www.little-creek.com. Doors open on the night of the event at 4:30 p.m. with the first bell at 5:00 p.m. For more information and directions to the Little Creek Casino Resort, please visit their website at www.Little-Creek.com

“We’re very excited to return to the Little Creek Casino Resort and work with their terrific team on this event,” said Dan Goossen, President of Goossen Tutor Promotions. “The main event is a major step-up for Javier Molina and, for Kendall Holt, it’s a do-or-die bout. For Molina it’s an opportunity to take another step toward a world ranking and for Holt, it’s a chance to re-establish himself as a world class fighter.”

“The fight will have a lasting impact on both men. One fighter trying to record the biggest win of his career, the other fighting to stay relevant. All the makings of a great fight.”

Fighting out of Norwalk, CA, the 23-year-old Molina, a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team, has compiled a record of 14-1-0 (6 KO’s) since turning professional in 2009. He is currently riding a five bout-winning streak, capped by a victory over highly touted prospect Joseph Elegele on March 9 of this year in Costa Mesa, CA.

Having all the gifts to become boxing’s next rising star, Molina is looking to repeat the success of his Olympic teammate Demetrius Andrade who recently won a world championship.

“This is a great opportunity for me, and I believe I’m up for the challenge,” said Molina.

With a record of 28-6-0 (18 KO’s), New Jersey native Holt is coming off a disappointing 2013 loss against the IBF Junior Welterweight World Champion Lamont Peterson on February 22 in Washington, D.C. in his bid to reclaim his world championship status.

Over the course of his 12-year career the 32-year-old Holt has defeated numerous world champions and top contenders including Ricardo Torres, David Diaz, Isaac Hlatshwayo and Julio Diaz.

“Molina hasn’t been where I’ve been and I intend to remind him this is the big leagues when he steps in the ring with me,” a confident Holt said.

“This will be the fourth year in a row that we’ve had the pleasure of broadcasting a Kendall Holt fight. He put on a great show for ESPN last year in a world title bout against Lamont Peterson despite the loss and we expect the same type of action against Molina,” said Brian Kweeder, ESPN’s Senior Director of Programing and Acquisitions.

Co-featured at “Little Creek Brawl IV” is another sensational ten round featherweight battle between two Southern California based contenders, former world champion Rico “Suavecito” Ramos of Pico Rivera and Jonathan “Lil Thund’r” Arrellano of Ontario.

Just 26-years-old Ramos, 22-3-0 (12 KO’s), has already packed a career’s worth of high-level activity into his six-year professional career. Winning the WBA Super Bantamweight World Title from Akifumi Shimoda on July 9, 2011, Ramos relinquished the title to current pound-for-pounder Guillermo Rigondeaux six months later.

Since the setback of losing the world championship, Ramos has defeated two highly regarded undefeated contenders; Efrain Esquivias in June of last year and most recently scoring an impressive knockout of former amateur standout Carlos Ivan Velasquez on September 7 of this year. As an amateur, Velasquez was the last man to defeat current world champion Yuriokis Gamboa one of the long list of great Cuban fighters.

Bringing a record of 14-2-2 (3 KO’s) into battle, fan favorite Arrellano returns to action after his career best victory, a show-stopping performance over Charles Huerta on November 16 at the Citizens Business Bank Arena on the undercard of the Andre Ward/Edwin Rodriguez Super Middleweight Championship.

In a crowd thrilling eight round war, Arrellano used accurate and sharp punching combinations to take a majority decision over the battle-tested veteran Huerta.

“Little Creek Casino Resort and the Squaxin Island Tribe are excited to have two world championship level fights at our property providing our fans with world-class toe-to-toe action,” said Little Creek Chief Executive Officer, Michael Starr.

The undercard will feature some promising Washington-state prospects for the “Little Creek Brawl IV” event, which will be announced shortly.

About Little Creek Casino Resort:
Little Creek Casino Resort is located on Highway 101, a few minutes west of Olympia, WA, near Shelton. It is owned and operated by the Squaxin Island Tribe and features smoking and non-smoking casino space with nearly 1,700 slots and a variety of table games, including blackjack, roulette, craps and poker. STATEMENT BY KENDALL HOLT

April 8, 2013 – I am pleased to announce that according to laboratory results I am not under suspicion of having taken a banned substance in connection with my bout against Lamont Peterson.

We have received an email from Dr. David Eichner, Director of the WADA accredited Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory that my results “do not suggest doping.”

As explained to me, “intact HCB” indicates the use of that banned substance. A confirmatory test reflected that I did not have “intact HCB” and thus doping was ruled out in my case.

There is an atypical finding for “non-intact HCB,” which, as explained to me, is naturally produced. That finding will be explored further by my physicians.

This explanation, too, was provided directly by the Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory located in Salt Lake City.

I requested a full WADA drug screening at the time of my bout with Lamont Peterson. Under the circumstances I am very glad that I did because it not only provided protection against drug cheating but also alerted me when I finally got the proper information of the need for further medical testing.

I look forward to returning to the ring at 147 lbs.

STATEMENT BY KENDALL HOLT

March 29, 2013 – First and foremost, I want everyone to know that I did not knowingly take any P.E.D., nor do I believe I unknowingly took any P.E.D.

The facts are as follows:

My camp, at my instruction, requested WADA level testing in connection with my bout with Lamont Peterson. Post bout urine samples were sent to the WADA accredited laboratory testing lab in Salt Lake City.

We repeatedly attempted to obtain the lab results from the D.C. Commission, with no success until yesterday. We did, however, receive an email from the Commission stating that both fighters had passed their test. Nonetheless we wanted the actual lab results.

Yesterday we received those lab results. The lab results were not identified by fighter but one of the results showed an elevated HCG level. It was labeled as an “”Atypical Finding.”

There are three levels of findings for WADA testing. There is a “negative” finding, meaning that the athlete has tested “negative” for prohibited substances, there is an “Adverse Analytical Finding,” meaning that there is a prohibited substance, and there is an “Atypical Finding”, meaning there should be further investigation. In part this is because there are certain medical conditions, which can cause elevated HCG levels.

We briefly believed that the test involved was that of Mr. Peterson. In fact it may be mine.

At this point, we do not have a full chain of custody report, which we will obtain. We will also, once the full chain of custody report is obtained, have the “B” sample tested. Finally, when that is completed we will have the medical tests as indicated by the results.

GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS STATEMENT ON LAMONT PETERSON’S FEBRUARY 22 POST-FIGHT DRUG TEST

Lamont_Peterson
Washington, DC (March 28) – Contrary to earlier erroneous media reports,
Lamont Peterson did not fail a post-fight drug test following his successful IBF Junior Welterweight World Championship defense against Kendall Holt on Friday, February 22 in Washington, DC. In fact, Peterson tested negative for all banned substances on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Full Menu as well as human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and luteinizing hormone (LH).

“We are very pleased that there has been clarification that Lamont Peterson did not test positive for any banned substances as reported inaccurately earlier today,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Today’s incident exemplifies the importance of accurate fact checking prior to reporting news. Golden Boy Promotions looks forward to Lamont Peterson’s next fight and furthering his career.”

KENDALL HOLT MAKES MOVE TO 147

March 4, 2013 – Former junior welterweight world titlist Kendall Holt will be moving up to 147lbs after spending the majority at or around the 140lb weight limit. The move to welterweight is coming at a time in Holt’s career where he is in search for the biggest fights he can possibly get. With a division like welterweight filled with named opponents and the name Holt recognized in boxing circles across the world, it is fitting that the move be made now.

Holt will prepare his body for the change and he believes that it should come more naturally than most, he feels that his body and boxing desires are directly synced up at this stage in his career.

“The time is right for me to make this transition to welterweight, I feel like I’ve still got a lot of fight in me and what better way to exercise it than to be in a division with so many interesting match ups. It isn’t just what I want, it’s also what my body is telling me to do and my body is telling me that I’m going to be a physically better fighter in the move up,” Holt explained.

There won’t be a shortage of opponents at welterweight with names like Victor Ortiz, Andre Berto, and Timothy Bradley to name a few. Holt is anxious to start mixing it up and ruffling up the welterweight feathers.

“I’m trying to get as far as I can and I’m looking to make this welterweight run count. I’m not some kid coming into the division, I am a proven fighter with a recognized name and I’m looking to land some of the most interesting fights that can be made. The good thing is I the division is stacked 1-10 and I’m looking to knock one of those guys out of their spot.”

Peterson stops Holt in eight to retain IBF Jr. Welterweight champ

Lamont_Peterson
Lamont Peterson retained the IBF Jr. Welterweight title with a eighth round stoppage over former beltholder Kendall Holt at the DC Armory in Washington, DC.

Holt came out boxing well over the first three rounds. Peterson started ti get his motor running as he started walking down Holt and dropped him with a big overhand right in round four. Peterson started applying intense pressure that had Holt backing. A big combination on the ropes hurt Holt in round six and it was cleaned up by a big right hand that sent Hold to the canvas for a second time.

Peterson was relentless and landed some hard combinations in round seven and he then finished things off in the eighth with a devastating flurry on the ropes and referee Tony Weeks stopped the bout at 1:42 of round eight.

Peterson, 139.6 lbs of Washington, D.C. was fighting for the first time in fourteen months after testing positive for synthetic testosterone is now 31-1-1 with sixteen knockouts. Holt, 140 lbs of Paterson, NJ is now 28-6.

Roman Morales scored a fifth round stoppage over Jesus Hernandez in a scheduled eight round Jr. Featherweight bout.

Morales boxed well and got out to an early lead lead over the first three rounds. In round four, Morales scored a knockdown from a right habd just before the end of the frame. Morales ended things with a perfect left to the body that sent Hernandez down for referee Malik Walid’s ten count and the bout was over at 2:59 of round five

Morales, 122 lbs of San Ardo, CA is now 15-0 with eight knockouts. Hernandez, 121 lbs of Riverside, CA is 10-1-3

Current Jr. Welterweight Titlist Lamont Peterson to Defend Title Against Kendall Holt on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights

Lamont_Peterson
The February 22 edition of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra will feature an IBF Title fight between current Junior Welterweight titlist Lamont Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KOs) and former Junior Welterweight titlist Kendall “Rated R” Holt (28-5, 16 KOs) in the 12-round main event. Friday’s show from Washington, D.C., will air live at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2 HD, and will be available online through WatchESPN.com and on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app. The card will also air live on ESPN Deportes+, the new digital extension of ESPN Deportes, and will air tape delayed on ESPN Deportes at 10:30 p.m. The card is promoted by Gary Shaw Productions.

Joe Tessitore and Teddy Atlas will be ringside at the D.C. Armory describing the action for ESPN2 HD, while studio host Todd Grisham (@GrishamESPN) will be on site presenting the latest boxing news and highlights. ESPN.com boxing writer Dan Rafael will also be on site providing analysis of each bout. Alex Pombo and Delvin Rodriguez will call this week’s fights for ESPN Deportes’ Viernes de Combates (Friday Night Fights) with Leopoldo Gonzalez and Pablo Viruega in the studio. Bilingual reporter Bernardo Osuna (@osunaespn) will present live interviews and reports for both shows.

Main Event:
Peterson, the home town favorite, enters Friday’s fight with big fight experience, having fought current and former titlists Amir Khan, Victor Ortiz, and Timothy Bradley Jr. He won a 12-round split decision against Khan in his last fight to win the IBF Junior Welterweight title.

“The game plan against Kendall Holt is to stay busy,” Peterson said. “He really doesn’t try to fight the whole three minutes of each round. He kind of picks and chooses when he fights, so we just plan to keep him working and wear him down.”

New Jersey’s Holt is looking to build momentum after a second-round TKO win over Tim Coleman. “Lamont’s a good fighter,” he said. “One big difference in this fight is that none of the pressure is on me – I’m not fighting at home, it’s not my championship title. All the pressure’s on him and that pressure builds up in a person’s mind. He may come out there and try to impress the crowd and if he gets a little overanxious or a little overzealous. It could be an early night for him.”

Co-Feature:
Friday’s eight-round co-feature will pit undefeated Junior Featherweights Roman Morales (14-0, 7 KOs) against Jesus Hernandez (10-0-3 2 KOs). Morales is coming off a fifth-round knockout win over Jose Iniguez, while Hernandez is looking to rebound from a six-round draw against Edwin Solis.

The show titled “REDEMPTION” will broadcast live on ESPN 2’s Friday Night Fights starting at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m PT and is co-promoted by Gary Shaw Productions and Headbangers Promotions.

Lamont Peterson talks about his first title defense and fight in 14 months and dispels the notion of ring rust….
“To me it feels great to get back into the ring and defend my IBF title. The layoff did not hurt me because I’ve been in the gym training like I was going to fight for the past year,” said Peterson “I don’t believe in ring rust a fighter fights and that’s what I do. But one good thing with the time off is that I have been able to rest my body and work on fine tuning my skills. I’m ready to fight now.”

Lamont Peterson on training in Washington, D.C….
“For a lot of fighters having training camp at home can be a major distraction. But for me its the total opposite. I like training at home I know where everything is. I don’t have problems getting back and forth from the gym my routine is regular. I also have the help of family friends during the training camp if I need anything. But I’m also a very self disciplined individual, so at the end of the day, it really would not matter where I trained.”

Lamont Peterson on sparring…
“We have brought several different fighters into camp to work with. But I have done the most work with Dominic Wade a middleweight who is fighting on the card at the Armory. He is a heavy puncher who has a lot speed and power. So its been great to get the work in with him.”

Lamont Peterson on fighting at home in Washington, D.C…..
“I always like fighting here at home. Early on in my career I did not get a chance to do so. Any opportunity I get to fight here we take it. I love the support I get from the fans and the city. Washington, D.C. is a big fight town and I want to give them the great show they expect. It also helps to hear the voices of your friends and family cheering you own.”

Peterson to defend against Holt on February 22nd

Lamont_Peterson
IBF Jr. Welterweight champion Lamont Peterson will defend his crown against mandatory contender Kendall Holt on February 22nd in Washington, D.C. on ESPN 2 according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“I’ve been talking to (Peterson’s Manager/Trainer) Barry (Hunter) all along trying to work this out. We went to a purse bid so we could protect the fight and make sure we had time to get it all worked out,” said Holt’s promoter Gary Shaw, who won the purse bid to stage the fight. “Barry and I are partners and we’re gonna split up the money and make our own deals with the fighters. Kendall will make more than $12,500 and Lamont will make more than $37,500.”

“I think it’s a wonderful fight for Kendall,” Shaw said. “These are two fighters who are both going to come to win. I don’t think the fight is going to go to a decision. Kendall can really punch. I’ve always believed he was the biggest puncher in the 140-pound division. And I have a lot of respect for Lamont Peterson. Look what he did to Khan. At the end of the day, he won the fight.

“Stylistically, I think it will be a terrific fight. Neither guy will back down from each other.”

Gary Shaw wins Peterson – Holt Purse bid

Lamont_Peterson
Gary Shaw Productions has won the the right to stage a potential IBF Jr. Welterweight title fight between champion Lamont Peterson and Kendall Holt according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

Shaw grabbed the rights for a mere $50,000. Since his company was the only one that showed up at the IBF offices for the purse bid, he submitted the envelope with the cheaper total. He would have bid a much higher amount had their been competition at the auction.

As the titleholder, Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KOs) is entitled to 75 percent of the money ($37,500) with Holt (28-5, 16 KOs) getting the remaining 25 percent ($12,500).

“We’re going to do the fight so I want to get with Barry Hunter and see if we can do it in D.C., and if not, then I’ll take the fight somewhere else,” Shaw said. “Kendall Holt wants this fight. Peterson? That will be up to him and Barry if I can make a deal with them.”

“I’ve been spoken to Barry and I thought we’d make a deal before the purse bid,” Shaw said. “He said he would call Lamont and get back to me, but I have not heard back from him.”

“Let’s see if Barry comes around and see what kind of gate we can do,” Shaw said.

Holt destroys Coleman in two

In what looked like a competitive bout on paper proved to be a total mismatch in the ring as former world champion Kendall Holt needed less then two rounds to pound out Tim Coleman at the Morango Casino & Resort in Cabazon, California.

Holt dropped Coleman in round one with a perfect left hook to the body. Holt was deliberate in dropping Coleman three more times in round two first with a right hand. After that Coleman looked like he wanted to be anywhere except in the ring with Holt as he was dropped two more times with body shots before his corner mercifully stopped the bout at 2:23 of round two.

Holt of Paterson, NJ is now 28-5 with sixteen knockouts. Colemna, 143 lbs of Las Vegas is now 19-3-1

Abraham Lopez scored an eight round unanimous decision over Gabriel Tolmajyan in a Super Featherweight bout.

Although Tolmajyan fought very well early by being more active moving up and down on Lopez. Lopez pushed the action late but he already had an insurmountable lead on the cards which didint seem to be the case as Tolmajyan deserved better.

Lopez, 127 lbs of Le Puente, CA won by scores of 79-73, 78074 and 78-74 and is now 17-0. Tolmajyan is now 12-2-1.

Roman Morales remained perfect with a six round unanimous decision over Ruffino Serrano in a Super Bantamweight bout.

Morales dropped Serrano with body work in round five and was never challenged in the bout as he won by scores of 60-53, 59-54 and 59-54.

Morales, 122 lbs of San Ardo, CA is now 10-0. Serrano, 121 lbs of Santa Maria, CA is now 12-4.

Kendall Holt to face Danny Garcia on Hopkins – Dawson undercard

Dan Rafael of espn.com is reporting that Jr. Welterweights Kendall Hilt and Danny Garcia will fight eachother on October 15th as part of the Bernard Hopkins – Chad Dawson world Light Heavyweight title fight undercard in Los Angeles.

“It’s done, 100 percent done and I’m very excited about this fight,” said Holt’s promoter Gary Shaw. “I think it’s a great fight and the right fight for both fighters.”

“It wasn’t hard at all,” he said. “Golden Boy and myself both wanted to make the fight and both fighters wanted the fight. That makes the perfect marriage.”

“I don’t think Garcia has ever felt the kind of power Kendall has and Kendall may not have been in with anyone recently with the kind of speed that Garcia has,” Shaw said. “It’s the old cliche — this is the young fighter versus the veteran, which is the theme of Hopkins and Dawson as well.”

junior lightweight titleholder Jorge Linares (31-1, 20 KOs) for the lightweight belt recently vacated by Humberto Soto (DeMarco’s cousin).

Shaw said he and Golden Boy are still working to finalize a fourth televised bout, but that it could include heavyweight Franklin Lawrence, whom Shaw recently signed, or blue chip featherweight prospect Gary Russell Jr., a 2008 U.S. Olympian.

“We’ll lock in the last fight probably by Wednesday,” Shaw said.

Holt and Diaz Vie for One Last Shot

The term “must-win” is one of the many overused phrases in all of sports. That being said, tonight’s pairing of former world champions Kendall Holt and Julio Diaz, which takes place at the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California, is one that warrants that abused label. The winner will be set up for one last crack at a major player, while the loser will likely be relegated to name opponent status.

It seems like forever ago that Holt (26-4, 14 KOs) of Patterson, New Jersey was in a pick ‘em unification bout against Timothy Bradley Jr. A quick check of the record books shows that bout, a notch or two below a superfight at the time, took place just over two years ago. Holt scored two official knockdowns, but came up short in losing a twelve-round unanimous decision, thus handing over his WBO 140-pound title to Bradley. Holt has experienced his share of troubles since, including legal woes and a surprising stoppage suffered at the hands of Kaizer Mabuza. Diaz represents the type of opponent that could bolster the view of Holt enough that a bigger money fight could be possible.

Diaz (38-6, 27 KOs) of Coachella, California is in a very similar position. Turn the pages of the record books back a little further and you will find Diaz entering a lightweight unification bout with Juan Diaz a slight underdog. The young “Baby Bull” handled Julio “The Kidd” quite handily that October night in 2007. Diaz would go on to losing two of his next four bouts before restoring some of his credibility with a recent two-fight winning run over solid to decent opposition.

Their ten-round fight, which takes place just over the light welterweight limit, headlines tonight’s ESPN2 Friday Night Fights telecast. Diaz, the two-time former IBF Lightweight titleholder, scaled 141 ½-pounds Thursday. Holt, who ended an eleven-month layoff with a first-round knockout in January, weighed in at 142-pounds.

In the televised co-feature, undefeated puncher Jonathan Gonzalez (12-0, 12 KOs) of San Juan, Puerto Rico will take on his toughest test to date in Rudy Cisneros (12-2, 11 KOs) of Chicago, Illinois in an eight-round light middleweight bout. Gonzalez, a 2008 Puerto Rican Olympian, weighed in at 154-pounds. Cisneros, who had a solid win on his resume before his 2008 decision over Latif Mundy was changed to a no contest for a failed drug test, weighed in at 152 ½-pounds. Cisneros has been out of action since December of 2009.

In an intriguing undercard bout, Julian Williams (6-0, 4 KOs) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania meets Francisco Santana (12-2, 6 KOs) of Santa Barbara, California in a six-round pairing of light middleweights. Williams has an unblemished record, but he has never been in with a fighter of Santana’s caliber before. Santana has faced the tougher opposition and both of his losses were suffered at the hands of still unbeaten prospect Karim Mayfield. Williams scaled 153-pounds, while Santana weighed-in at 153 ½.

Locally popular super featherweight Rufino Serrano (8-3) of Santa Maria, California will take on Ramon Flores (3-11-2, 3 KOs) of Wilmington, California by way of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico in a six-rounder. Serrano, a winner of this last four, weighed in at 126 ¾-pounds, while Flores came in at 129.

Jhon Ortega (4-0, 4 KOs) of Londonderry, New Hampshire will take on Marcus Thompkins (5-3-1, 2 KOs) of Michigan City, Indiana in a six-round welterweight fight. The unbeaten Ortega, fighting in California for the fifth straight time, weighed in at 144 ½-pounds. Thompkins, who has failed to win four straight times, scaled 145 ¼-pounds.

Joel Diaz (2-0, 1 KO) of Palmdale, California looks to get his year rolling against Dionicio Alvarez (1-2) of Fresno, California in a four-round super featherweight fight. Diaz turned pro last July and picked up two wins in three months, but has been on the shelf since late last year. Diaz’ layoff is nothing compared to the one Alvarez will end tonight. Alvarez was last seen in May of 2006 and is coming off of a knockout defeat at bantamweight. Diaz scaled 128-pounds, while came in at 126 ¼.

In a rematch, undefeated Kurtiss Colvin (4-0, 3 KOs) of Austin, Texas will take on Cameron Allen (3-6, 1 KO) of Battle Creek, Michigan in a four-round middleweight fight. In what was described in various ringside reports as a war, Colvin survived a knockdown and a standing eight-count to drop the tougher-than-advertised Allen in the third en route a four-round majority decision in February. Allen took a fight against another unbeaten foe just a month later and lost a decision, while Colvin has been idle since his first pro scare. Colvin came in at 159-pounds, while Allen scaled 158 ½.

Former amateur champion Seniesa Estrada of Los Angeles, California will make her professional debut against Maria Ruiz (0-2-2) of Houston, Texas in a four-round light flyweight bout. Estrada, the 2009 USA Boxing National Champion at 112-pounds, came in at 111 ½-pounds, while Ruiz scaled 112 ½.

In a four-round bantamweight bout, Daniel Roman (1-0-1, 1 KO) of Garden Grove, California will take on Alfredo Madrigal (1-0) of Bakersfield, California. Roman, coming in off of a February draw, weighed in at 118-pounds, as did Madrigal, who is making his 2011 debut.

A familiar name was a late addition to the card, as Anthony Dirrell (20-0, 17 KOs) of Flint, Michigan will take on Alberto Mercedes (14-17-1, 10 KOs) of West Allis, Wisconsin in a six-round light heavyweight fight. Dirrell, the WBC #8 ranked super middleweight, came in at 170-pounds. Mercedes, originally of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, scaled 171-pounds.

Tickets for the event, promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, are available online at StarTickets.com.

OMEGA-3 EPA AND DHA IN THE SPORTS NUTRITION MARKET

Nutraceutical Business & Technology November 1, 2010 | Riddick, Linwood As soon as you mention sports nutrition, most people immediately think about bodybuilders and elite athletes. However, current trends suggest that the sports nutrition market is thriving because of the average consumer ‘s growing desire for a healthy lifestyle. This increases the need for functional food and beverages to not only deliver the sought after nutrients, but to taste good as well.

wo of the most important aspects of getting fit and living a healthy lifestyle are diet and exercise. As stated by Alison M. Hill: “Regular exercise and consuming long-chain omega-3 fatty acids from fish or fish oil can independently improve cardiovascular health, but combining these lifestyle modifications may be more effective than either treatment alone.” Contrary to its negative image, not all fat is bad. Good fats are dietary ones that help to maintain a healthy body and are beneficial at all life stages. Your body requires a regular, daily intake of good fats to function properly and to stay healthy. Although omega-3 is vita to overall good health, the human body is not able to produce enough of it on its own. As such, it must be included in the diet, either by eating oily fish, foods/beverages fortified with omega-3 EPA/DHA or by taking fish oil supplements.

What Is It About Fish Oil?

The omega-3s are a family of essential fatty acids that includes EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). Oily fish (such as sardines, anchovies, mackerel and salmon) are the primary natural sources of omega-3 EPA/DHA, which contribute to the many health benefits associated with omega-3s. ALA – found in flax, as well as hemp, chia and other plants – is converted to omega-3 EPA/DHA by your body. However, the convers??n rate is very low – less than one per cent. As a result, ALA is not considered to be a viable source of omega-3 EPA/DHA. Omega-3 EPA and DHA are needed throughout your whole body at every life stage, whether you are a gold-winning Olympian or an individual looking to live a healthy lifestyle. These two “healthy” fats play complementary roles in human health: DHA has a structural role in cell membranes, ??ding in normal growth and development, whereas EPA plays a physiological role, acting as a building block for the cells in your vital organs. Omega-3 from fish oil benefits the whole body by providing EPA and DHA, body-ready forms of omega-3. It is also an essential piece of the overall health puzzle, particularly for those who exercise, weight train or suffer from sports injuries or aching joints, etc. Market researcher Nielsen notes: “Omega-3 products have bucked the recession to a record 42% growth in 2009, as consumer interest in healthy eating grows and product prices drop.” With increasing numbers of scientific studies reporting the health benefits of omega-3 EPA/DHA, more manufacturers are incorporating these essential nutrients into their sports nutrition supplements and products.

Omega-3 EPA/DHA and Expercise More than 14,000 scientific studies, published during the past 35 years, have consistently shown that omega-3 EPA and DHA are important to health throughout every life stage. Consumers are becoming more interested in healthy eating and living and are recognizing that omega-3 EPA/DHA is an important lifestyle component – from birth to old age. Maintaining a healthy blood pressure is important for a healthy, active lifestyle. Researchers in Australia studied 1 6 healthy male cyclists and found that supplementing these well-trained participants with fish oil for 8 weeks significantly lowered their blood pressure (among other benefits) during exercise. As seen in this study, omega-3 was reported to have shown a positive effect on the athletes’ blood pressure, which may also result in other benefits for the body. allfishoilbenefitsnow.com all fish oil benefits

Okay, so you understand the benefits of omega-3 EPA/DHA, but you don’t like the taste of fish. Or, you find that you just don’t tend to reach for the salmon at the grocery store! Always eating healthily is easier said than done, and despite your best efforts, breaks in the regimen and food binges are going to happen. You’re probably not meeting your recommended daily intakes of vitamins and nutrients. Don’t worry; you’re not the only one. There aren’t many people that can honestly say that they can put a tick beside each section of their “daily food guide.” When you are dieting, working out or just trying to eat better, everything you put in your mouth counts. If you find it difficult to meet all the daily eating requirements, this is when a carefully chosen supplement can factor into your diet. Although eating a well-balanced diet should be your number one goal, the right supplements can fill in the gaps when your diet is lacking or when you opt for pizza instead of the salmon or skinless, boneless lean chicken main course.

Supplements such as omega-3 fish oil capsules are an easy way to get your daily dose of omega-3 EPA/DHA, while not preventing you from preparing and consuming the food you’d normally choose. However, supplements will not offset poor eating habits, and should be used in combination with a well-balanced diet and an active lifestyle. Exciting research has been reported and new studies continue to be done that look at the potential benefits of EPA/ DHA for athletes – and the average consumer participating in sport and healthy pastimes. The cardiovascular benefits of EPA/DHA are well known and offer potential benefits to athletes and fitness enthusiasts alike. Research indicates that EPA and DHA offer great potential in other areas as well; along with the sporting community, we wait with anticipation as this research continues to develop. Choosing a specific diet that’s appropriate to your lifestyle and level of exercise and fitness is important. Whether this includes meal replacements, protein and weight management powders, powdered sport drinks, fortified food and beverages or just a healthy, well-balanced diet, consumer demand for nutritional sport and weight management powders is increasing. Being able to incorporate essential nutrients, such as omega-3 EPA/DHA, easily and in a variety of ways helps in the fight to achieve your health and fitness goals. site all fish oil benefits

Need More Convincing?

According to Mens Health, fish is a big seller with US National Football League (NFL) players; foods with a high omega-3 fatty acid content are thought to help repair the wear and tear of strenuous exercise. The health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids are well known and wide-ranging, and they can easily be added to any diet. Whether you’re a professional football player or an average person looking to increase your level of health, fitness or overall well-being, omega-3 EPA/DHA supplements, fatty fish and fortified foods provide the essential nutrients that your body needs. Not only are consumers becoming more aware of the need for and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, they are also becoming more educated about what essential nutrients our bodies need. People are putting more emphasis on health, fitness and overall wellbeing. As such, consumer demand for healthy, nutritious and often multipurpose functional foods and drinks has increased significantly during the last few years. Fortified food and beverages remain popular in sports nutrition and continue to increase as the trend evolves from simply removing unwanted ingrethents such as sugar, fat and sodium, to putting nutrients back in, like omega-3s and vitamins.

According to Douglas Kaiman: “I see a movement towards products and ingrethents that are easily understandable to the consumer and are paired with lifestyle changes, rather than magic bullet approaches that are surrounded by hype.” With the increased awareness of the need for a healthy diet, consumers are turning to exercise and healthy products with clear, proven benefits that can easily be incorporated into a healthy eating routine . . . instead of relying on “quick-fix” miracle treatments. Products such as MEG-3 Powder-loc enable you to successfully incorporate omega-3 EPA/DHA into a variety of food and beverage applications. MEG-3 Powder-loc microencapsulation technology uses a double shell protection system to keep the EPA and DHA locked into the microcapsule, while keeping the taste and smell of the fish locked out. From athletes to people just looking to improve their diets, Ocean Nutrition Canada makes it easier to add omega-3 EPA/DHA into your healthy sports nutrition regimen.

Q & A with Timothy “Desert Storm” Bradley

As Tim Bradley’s nickname “Desert Storm” suggests he’s a trooper. He’s one of Boxing’s blue collar fighters, he’s never had anything given to him the easy way, just through sheer hard work. He first won a world title back in May 2008 when as the underdog he traveled to England where he fought awkward, southpaw Junior Witter. Witter started well, but typical of Bradley he slowly solved the puzzle that was Witter dropping him in the sixth along the way to winning a split decision. The old adage winning a title makes a fighter better came to bear when he outpointed tough guy Edner Cherry before again accepting a tough assignment, he headed to Quebec, Canada to defeat Kendall Holt. This time Bradley revealed something different he showed just how well conditioned he is twice dragging himself off the canvas and riding out some tough patches to unify the his WBC crown with Holt’s WBO title. After being forced to vacate the WBC title he fought former unified Lightweight champion Nate Campbell, after handling Campbell well winning the opening three rounds on all three judges cards Campbell appeared to retire between rounds. At later inspection the California commission wavered the result opting to change it to a No decision. The Californian Native closed out an impressive 2009 with a sparkling display of savvy and ring generalship as he posted a near shut out of Lamont Peterson in a fight many believed to be 50-50 going in. When various fights fell out including a mooted battle with Argentine power puncher Marcos Maidana fell through Bradley opted to head up to 147 and meet another Big punching Argentinean in the form of Luis Abregu. While Bradley may not of had the power or size of Abregu, he had the ring smarts and speed advantages to gain the points win. During 2010 Bradley struggled to get any of the fights he hoped for at 140, however he helps get Boxing off with a bang when he fights unbeaten Devon “The Great” Alexander on 29 January on HBO at the Silverdome, in Pontiac, Michigan.

Hello Tim, welcome to 15rounds.com

Anson Wainwright – Firstly you have a “Super Fight” coming up with Devon Alexander. What are your thoughts on that fight? How highly do you rate Alexander?

Tim Bradley – Pretty much my thoughts are it’s going to be a great fight. Our styles, he’s a lefty, we have similar attributes, high volume type of fighters, smart boxers. So it’s going to be an interesting fight. Different strategy’s, what I’m going to take as far as my strategy and as far as his strategy. As far as how I rate Devon? I think Devon is one of the best 140 pounder’s in the world. I rate him at number two fighter in the division, hands down. Now that Khan beat Maidana you can argue and say Khan maybe number 1 or 2 as well. It just depends on how all these fights play out. If I can get a win over Devon and fight Khan or someone of that nature then we’ll see who the best 140 pounder in the world is. But I rate Devon right now as the number 2 and I rate myself as number 1 and we’re going to see who’s the best.

Anson Wainwright – If you win you wont receive the WBC belt. What are your thoughts on that?

Tim Bradley – Well I really don’t have any thoughts on it. It was a decision I made and that’s that. If I wasn’t going to be recognized as WBC champion. It is what it is. There’s nothing I can do about it, so I’m not worried about it.

Anson Wainwright – Your known in the sport as a gym rat but when did you start training for this fight and can you tell us about the training you do?

Tim Bradley – I started in mid December. I did my press tour. I sparred for the first time in 5 months, but I felt great, I like to stay in shape. So it’s not like I haven’t done anything in 5 months. I’ve been really active running and staying fit. So when I get back to the gym it’s not hard to comeback like most fighters. My last couple of sparring sessions have been superb. Like I say I haven’t sparred for 5 months but the way I’m looking I can’t wait to see me after about 6 weeks of sparring.

Anson Wainwright – Who is part of Team Bradley, who is your manager, trainer & promoter? How did you come to work with them? Also what gym do you train at?

Tim Bradley – Team Bradley is pretty much my family. Joel Diaz is the head coach, you have Timothy Ray Snr, my father as second in the ring. Then you have a good friend of mine Sam L Jackson he’s another one of my corner men. Team Bradley consists of my wife, she handles all my phone calls, pretty much anything that I need she handles. We have Cameron Dunkin he’s my manager. He does everything to make sure I’m fine and all the contracts are great, all those good things. You also have Michael Miller, he’s my lawyer he handles all the contract things as well and also my promoter who is Ken Thompson and Gary Shaw Promotions. Thompson’s been with me about 6 years, I’ve been with Gary Shaw 4 and a half maybe 5 years. Also my brother in law and my mother, we’re a close team. I train at the Indio Boys and girls club.

Anson Wainwright – How did you first come to work with Joel Diaz & Cameron Dunkin.

Tim Bradley – Joel had his brother’s, he trained Antonio and former two time world champion Julio Diaz. My father was training me in the amateur days and when I was looking to turn pro I was looking for someone who knew the business, someone who was very efficient like I was, a hard worker and dedicated. So we traveled out maybe 30 minutes outside where we live to Lee Espinoza’s gym out in Coachella and Joel was training fighters, helping guys out. So we asked him if he’d be willing to train me professionally and he said “Yeah”. From that point on he groomed me and helped me become one of the best fighters in the world today. With the help of my father and Team. I have a great support team. That helps me stay focused and on my toes. There’s always positive people around me. That’s how I met Joel. I was talking to Cameron for a few months, I was looking for a bit more protection and someone who was very knowledgeable about the game, that has been in the game a very long time and I knew he had some great fighters in his stable that he managed and some great fighters over history. Cameron Dunkin is a huge name in Boxing as far as management. I really wanted him, I needed his expertise. To go over my contract make sure everything is legit and help and protect me and make sure I’m getting my just do’s.

Anson Wainwright – Can you tell us what it was like for you growing up in Southern California, were things tough for you early on?

Tim Bradley – Well growing up in Southern California, I grew up in a Neighbourhood there were a lot of gangs, tough streets. I knew everybody in the area and everybody knew who I was but it was tough to not be pulled in. That type of thug mentality was very hard to keep myself isolated. Boxing helped me do that. I hung out with some of my friends who were in gangs and you tend to roll with and think like them. Boxing was my foundation. My parents were hard on me growing up as well. They disciplined me, they made sure I was a respectable young man.

Anson Wainwright – When did you first become interested and take Boxing up?

Tim Bradley – I think it was sixth grade, I had a friend who was Boxing at the time. He was Boxing and I always got in trouble in school, fighting, getting in trouble, being a knucklehead, being a boy, beating up kids in the school. That’s how I got started. I nagged my dad for about 2 months “Can I go to the Boxing club, my friends doing it. I want to fight, please take me” He finally said ok, he said “If you like it there’s no quitting, you can’t quit if you like it” I said “Ok, that’s a deal” I never looked back. I’ve been training for 17 years of my life and I’ve never taken a break. The thing with most guys they take a break after a fight or amateur tournament, they leave for a couple of months. I was back the next Monday, after the tournament. I never really took a long lay off, when I was coming up in the amateur’s.

Anson Wainwright – You were a good amateur, what titles did you win? What guys who are now pro did you fight? What was your final record?

Tim Bradley – I won the National PAL Championship, I won under 19 Championship and Junior Gloves. I travelled and fought the French, Puerto Rican, Irish, Mexican’s. I had some duals under my belt. I had over 140 fights, I think I had about 20 loses.
I fought Andre Berto, Anthony Dirrell, Andre Ward, Vaughn Alexander, Lamont Peterson. I’m sure there’s more, I just don’t remember.

Anson Wainwright – When we spoke to Devon Alexander he mentioned you beat his brother Vaughn 6-4. So he’ll be gunning for revenge while you’ll be looking to do the family double.

Tim Bradley – Absolutely, I beat his brother and now I’m going to beat him. He wants revenge for his brother and it would probably mean a lot to him. He’d be like to his brother “I got him back” but that’s going to be a tough task.

Anson Wainwright – You turned pro in the summer of 2004, you stayed active over the next four years before you fought Junior Witter for the WBC title in Nottingham, England for his WBC title. What are your thoughts on that fight and what did it mean to you?

Tim Bradley – That fight meant everything to me. I was chasing that WBC title, that was the only belt I wanted as a kid. I had to have it and I felt if I had the opportunity I was going to take full advantage and was going to win and I was able to. Thank god I was strong enough, he gave me the strength and he gave my trainers the knowledge and myself the ability to go to England. That crowd over there. The amateur experience came into play because I’ve already traveled across pond and I’ve already faced the top amateur’s. So I had the experience to travel and I knew that. I felt I couldn’t be denied. Junior Witter was a great fighter at that time, a lot of people argue “Oh Devon stopped him”. I fought Junior Witter when Junior Witter hadn’t lost in years, the only loss he had was to Zab Judah and that was 6 or 7 years ago. Witter was number two fighter right behind Ricky Hatton and this guy was just full of confidence coming off a great knock out win over Vivian Harris, he was at the top of his game. He was one of the most feared boxers in the game. I fought Witter when he was at that point. Devon fought Witter after I shattered everything I took what Witter wanted and what made Witter, holding on to the WBC belt. I pretty much gave Devon the blueprint to beat Witter. To outbox him, to stay patient. I softened him up. Witter had to come to my hometown which is ironic because I went to his and he had to come over to my hometown to face Devon. That shows you how hard it is, ask Witter. I fought him at his best.

Anson Wainwright – When you went to England, were you well looked after or was there some gamesmanship?

The hotel we stayed in was quite pleasant, the people, the concierge, everybody was very nice to me. When we arrived my room wasn’t ready. I arrived at 2 in the afternoon and the room wasn’t ready. So I had to sleep on the ground for 3 hours in the computer room, I was exhausted from the plane ride. Then I get in my room and my A.C doesn’t work. God forbid it was hot outside at that time. It was very hot and muggy in my room, I stuck it out. I just said this is what it’s all about, I’ll deal with it. So that went on. The day later they checked my weight and before I left the house I was 143 pounds and I’m like I should be lighter. I didn’t eat much on the plane, I drank a bottle of water. You know when you come off a plane your 2 or 3 pounds lighter because of radiation you become dehydrated on that plane. So I was 146 pounds and I was like what the hells going on here. I said they must be wrong. They said they’d check in a couple of days. So they came back two days later and I checked the scales again and was like 145 pounds. I was like I’ve been training the last few days, there’s no way I can be 145 pounds. So what I did was check my weigh on scales which I brought, I always bring my own scales. I weighed 142, so I went downstairs and said “Hey your scales are wrong” and my trainer told me to go back upstairs and what he did was take our scales, there scales and one from the training room and we got a 25Ibs dumbbell and placed them on each scale. My scale said 25Ibs, then we checked the training room scale and it said 25Ibs and we used there scale it said 28Ibs. We said that scale is wrong. Whether they were doing it on purpose or not, I don’t think they’d do it on purpose but maybe they were trying to drain me, make me work harder during the week than I should be. That was my experience fighting Witter for the Championship coming out hearing all the boo’s. It could get under your skin but like I say I was on a mission and there was no way I was losing that fight.

Anson Wainwright – They say that when a fighter wins a World title it makes him a better fighter. Would you say this is the case with you?

Tim Bradley – Absolutely, because of the confidence it goes a long way. When you have the confidence in yourself, you have that title wrapped around you or strapped across your chest you have something your fighting for. It makes you feel much better or greater. The fact you have a target on your back you work harder during training. You work harder because you want to keep that title it’s your bread and butter, that’s how you eat. So you improve.

Anson Wainwright – You were ringside for Khan-Maidana what did you think of that fight?

Tim Bradley – That fight was awesome, it was one of the best fights I’ve seen in a long time. Due to the fact Khan stood there at times, sat on the ropes. I figured Khan would move all night and make it easy on himself, I guess Maidana was able to close the gap on him and wear him out a bit. Khan was hitting him with serious combination’s. I bet Khan was like “Gee I’m hitting this guy with my best punches and this guys still in my face”. I don’t know if he was discouraged in there but they felt that pressure. I couldn’t get him out of his face. He boxed off the ropes, I don’t think that was part of the game plan at all. Khan showed a tremendous amount of heart, that he’s a true champion. He disproved me and the critics out there. He does have a chin. Maidana showed how clever he is and how he’s like a little pit bull. He has no quit in his heart, that makes for a dangerous guy especially with his heart, he’s fearless.

Anson Wainwright – Did you see things you could implement in your strategy against those guys?

Tim Bradley – Absolutely, Khan is really young, I’m young myself and we all have a lot to learn in this game. We’re not veterans yet. We’re still grooming ourselves into great fighters and superstars. I’m working on that, I’m going to get better. I feel Khan fought the best that he could and thank Khan for fighting that fight he did because we’d never known he had the heart he did. Let alone you see Maidana get up from an hellacious liver shot and comeback. This guys a freaking animal, I was blown away. These guys are tougher than I thought but there are things I can capitalize on with both fighters.

Anson Wainwright – Do you feel as though having gone to 147 and fought a big puncher like Abregu that the power of guys like Maidana wouldn’t be a problem for you down at 140?

Tim Bradley – Yeah absolutely. At 140 I think I’m a nightmare for anybody. Maidana I know would keep coming at me. I’d just get ready for that. Get on my toes, on my bicycle and just box him for 12 rounds and make it an easy fight. Don’t stand and trade with this guy. Pot shot him from the outside, make him miss, right, left and give him so many angles.

Anson Wainwright – You have only fought once in 2010 up at Welterweight. Why was this? How did you feel at 147?

Tim Bradley – I really wanted to test the waters at 147, I wanted to leave that option open. I needed a test, a strong test to see if Welterweight was for me or not. Luis Abregu was a bigger puncher, very dangerous, very big. He was very unproven but he still was a dangerous guy. This guy had hands of stone. I really wanted to show the Boxing world I’m willing to go up in weight and fight the best to see if I had the ability to withstand the punching power at that weight. I took Abregu’s power very well and I can compete with anybody at 147 in the world. I felt great, I felt stronger, I felt like I had a little bit more power in my punches. I was less tired at 147, I have to put a lot of energy at 147. I was able to put out a lot of energy but I had a lot in reserve. So it wasn’t as stressful on my body at 147, it’s more natural. I walk around about 160.

Anson Wainwright – What do you like to do away from Boxing to relax?

Tim Bradley – I’m a big car freak, I love cars. When I’m away from Boxing I like to go check out cars, go to auctions and look at some old school car’s, get on-line and look for some nice deals on some old school cars and pick them up. I like to spend time with family. I do a lot of community work, I go to different schools and talk to students, tell them high schools important and what school was like for me. I have a football league that I help run, I’m the president of Juniors in Cathedral City where I live. My daughter does gymnastics. So I’m pretty much a family type of guy. I stay close to home, I’m very spontaneous and whatever I want to do that day I do.

Anson Wainwright – Finally do you have a message for Boxing fans ahead of your fight with Alexander?

Tim Bradley – Pretty much to all Boxing fans out there. I love and appreciate the support from all my fans. Especially when I’m fighting I’m not only fighting for myself and family I’m fighting for my team, for god and my Boxing fans out there. There standing behind me and there giving me that backbone saying Timmy Bradley is a force to be reckoned with and everybody needs to recognize that and that means a lot to me. I don’t want Boxing fans to be like “Ah Tim Bradley’s a joke, I want them to say Tim Bradley delivers. I can depend on Tim Bradley, he’s going to put on a great show, he’s going to perform as best his best each time, i can trust him”.

Thanks for your time Tim, good luck on the 29 January.

Q & A with Kaizer Mabuza

Last September Kaizer Mabuza left his homeland South Africa and headed to the Ukraine to fight then unbeaten Serhiy Fedchenko. He proved his mettle and won a majority decision, that propelled him in a fight back in February, once again he was on the road this time he made his American debut where he met former WBO 140 champion Kendall Holt. Holt was widely expected to win and win well. It didn’t come to bare as Mabuza now 23-6-3(14) posted his most impressive result so far forcing Holt to retire at the end of the sixth round. Since then Mabuza 30, has remained on the shelf largely due to politics. His next fight though without a venue or date will almost certainly be against Zab Judah for the vacant IBF Light Welterweight title. Here’s what Mabuza had to say.

Hello Kaizer, welcome to 15rounds.com

Anson Wainwright – It took for you to come to America to really open people’s eyes of how good you are when you beat Kendall Holt in February. What are your thoughts on that fight looking back?

Kaizer Mabuza – It is amazing how life can go different ways and change your fortunes. Somehow, I been underestimated even in my own country, where I was just one of the national champions. Prior of Holt fight, I took very short notice as replacement fight in Ukraine against unbeaten IBF I/C Champion Sergey Fedchenko. It was so short notice, that we just managed to arrive in Ukraine hour prior of the weigh in. Mr. Branco (my promoter) told me I have nothing to lose, but only gain. Not that in the case of winning I will only get a belt, but IBF Rating as well, which will secure me better fights and better money. Mr. Branco was very much right. After I have beaten Fedchenko I got offered fight against Holt. Holt was former WBO world Champion, and nobody give me a chance, even home in South Africa. Reporters were very negative, making comments that my promoter doesn’t care what will happen to me. Well, I just showed to all of them how wrong they were by stopping Holt.

Anson Wainwright – How come you haven’t been in action since? Do you have anything in the works?

Kaizer Mabuza – I couldn’t fight as IBF have appointed several guy’s from the rating to fight me for mandatory position – but all of them turned fight down, including Matthysse and Kotelnik. Once you are appointed for the mandatory eliminator, you can not take other fights, as you will lose your status.

Anson Wainwright – You will fight Zab Judah/Lucas Matthysse for the Vacant IBF title next year what did you think of Judah/Matthysse in that fight?

Kaizer Mabuza – I honestly thought Matthysse would win! I was surprised when I saw internet results and comments on the fight.

Anson Wainwright – Can you tell us about your team. Who is your manager, trainer & promoter? Also what gym do you train out of?

Kaizer Mabuza – My manager / trainer is Manny Fernandez and promoter Branco Milenkovic. I know that Branco who already have 4 IBF World Champions is looking for “number 5”, and I will not let him down! The gym name is “BRD Boxing Academy”.

Anson Wainwright – How did you first become interested in Boxing?

Kaizer Mabuza – Soccer and boxing are two most popular sports among the youth in my country – I opted for boxing.

Anson Wainwright – When your not training or fighting what do you like to do? What are your hobbies/Interests?

Kaizer Mabuza – Just relaxing with music and movies.

Anson Wainwright – Although it’s a different sport back in the summer the Soccer World Cup took place in your country. What impact did that have on you and your country?

Kaizer Mabuza – It has changed the perception of South Africa worldwide! It showed to the world, we can compete with the biggest countries on the world.

Anson Wainwright – Has the World Cup left a legacy in South Africa?

Kaizer Mabuza – With out doubt. Many people see us now differently and much more in the positive light.

Anson Wainwright – What do you think of the current Light Welterweight division? WBC Alexander, WBA Khan & WBO Bradley?

Kaizer Mabuza – Bradley had a problem with Holt, it wasn’t easy. I would rate Alexander as # 1 among the three.

Anson Wainwright – Who do you think will win the up coming fights between Amir Khan & Marcos Maidana? How about Tim Bradley & Devon Alexander?

Kaizer Mabuza – Maidana can cause upset, if Khan doesn’t change something, and I THINK Alexander will be “too much” for Bradley. But again, I was wrong about Judah vs. Matthysse…This is what make boxing interesting..It is very unpredictable.

Anson Wainwright – Who has been your toughest opponent and why?

Kaizer Mabuza – It was Isaac Hlatshwayo, the former IBF World Champion. He was in his prime and I took the fight too early. Today will be different story!

Anson Wainwright – Finally do you have a message for Zab Judah after there win before you fight?

Kaizer Mabuza – Whoever wins, they know who the man in waiting is, for Vacant IBF World Championship. I’m sure, after what I have done to Holt, they will not underestimate me!!

Thanks for your time Kaizer

Midweek Musings – Yesterday all three Kameda brothers were victorious in Japan; Koki won the vacant WBA 118 title outpointing former WBA 115 champion Alexander Munoz; Daiki barely squeezed past unheralded Silvio Olteanu retaining his WBA 112 crown & Tomaki stopped Pichitchai Twins Gym in three in Super Bantamweight action…Last Thursday also in Japan Mexican Hugo Cazares made the third defence of his WBA 115 crown. It was his third trip to Japan where he seems to be making a good living…Thought it was several days ago I’m still struggling to get remotely buzzed about Pacquiao-Mosley in May, several fights I am looking forward to in the opening few months of 2011 are Bradley-Alexander & Montiel-Donaire…Stay tuned for interviews with both halfs of “The Super Fight” Devon Alexander & Tim Bradley in the coming weeks.

Holt to take on Mabuza in IBF Eliminator on Feb. 27 In AC

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former WBO Jr. Welterweight champion Kendall Holt will take on Kaizer Mabuza on February 27 in Atlantic City.

The bout will be part of of Top Rank’s new Fox Sports “Top Rank Live” series on but is not expected to be televised and will take place before the broadcast begins which will be headlined by Philadelphia super Prospect Mike Jones taking on Henry Bruseles.

The winner will be due a mandatory title shot against the winner of the March 6 Devon Alexander-Juan Urango 140-pound unification fight, although the match won’t necessarily be next for the Holt-Mabuza winner.

“I think this fight will re-establish Kendall because he’s fighting for the No. 1 spot [according to the IBF],” said Brandon Jacobs, the New York Giants running back who manages Holt. “I think he’ll go through this guy pretty easily and the whoever wins the Alexander-Urango fight will have to come forward and fight him. We want one of the belts.”

If Holt (25-3, 13 KOs) wins and the title fight isn’t made immediately, which is possible since the IBF mandatory won’t yet be due, Top Rank’s Bob Arum, Holt’s promoter, and Jacobs said he could next face contender Lamont Peterson on the undercard of the proposed Yuri Foreman-Miguel Cotto junior middleweight title bout.
