Lester Martinez Decisions Aleem; Wins WBC Interim Super Middleweight Title

Lester Martinez won the WBC Interim Super Middleweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Immanuwel Aleem at the Orange Show Events Center in San Bernadino, California.

It was a fight that had some good two-way action that saw Martinez get the better more often than that. Aleem had some good flurries but it was too-far in between.

Martinez, 167.4 lbs of Guatemala City, Guatemala won by scores of 120-108, 119-109 and 118-110 and is now 20-0-1. Aleem, 167.5 lbs of Richmond, VA is 20-4-3.

“I feel good,” said a happy Martinez, post-fight. “I want to thank my parents and family. I want to thank my team: Bomac, Saul, all my team and my promoter Garry Jonas. I want to thank all of you, Guatemala. We now have a world champion! I love Guatemala and all of my fans. I love y’all. Viva Guatemala!

“All respect to Aleem,” the new champion continued. “He’s a warrior and we knew how good he was and his experience, but we were ready for that and more. We went in cautious because we knew what we had in front of us. But to hear the Guatemalan fans cheering gave us the will to go on.”

“He had more consistency in the little things and I didn’t capitalize, so shout out to Lester Martinez,” said a disappointed but sportsmanlike Aleem. “It wasn’t the performance I was looking for, but I’m going back to the drawing board to continue my hunt for a world title.”

Ceja, 153 lbs of Omaha, NE won by scores of 60-54 on all cards and is now 12-1. Wilson of Riverside, CA is 2-2-2.

In round one, Camarillo landed a combination that finished off by a left to the head that put Sio down and out at 1:18.

Sio was stretchered out of the ring.

The event is promoted by Pro Box Promotions and Sampson Boxing.

Here is what the fighters and trainers had to say Wednesday at the press conference from the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Los Angeles:

Omar Aleem (Aleem Trainer)

They’re predicting him to beat us, for him to knock us out. Go on YouTube. All of them say we’ll lose. We don’t need to talk. We’ve got the energy. We’ve got the divine punch for him. It’s going to be a divine, mystic punch. If he can handle it, we’re going to see. We’re not saying, ‘We’re going to do this, we’re going to do that.’ When we’re in the ring, we’re going to see who’s going to knock out who.”

“Mr Martinez, Respect. Bomac, respect. But we are going to show our skills. We don’t underestimate you, but we are going to be defensive and offensive.”

“If you want to underestimate him that’s up to you. We are going to show skill, ability, (and) determination.

“Why can’t we create this upset like Crawford did?”

“My son’s had success, too. How many fights does my son have? More than Lester Martinez, do the research. Go do it. You’ll find out. I trained him like Archie Moore and Jersey Joe Walcott.”

Immanuel Aleem

“Champions are made in people’s backyards. You have to go and get the title.”

“We know who we’re going up against. I don’t understand what an underdog is. I can fight. I can see. And I’ve got hands. I’ve trained to the best of my ability, and I’m going to go out there and execute.”

“I grew up watching Joe Frazier and Ali and a lot of these guys put their talents on the line against other good fighters. There was racism at those times. There were real hardships.

“Just follow the game plan, execute and gain the world title. Perform. Martinez is my main focus. Whatever he brings to the table, I need to be better at Saturday night. Whatever I need to do, do it. Do what we’ve been training for.”

“I got used to this in the amateur system. There’s always ‘this is the number one guy you’re gonna have to beat to win the national championship.’”

Bomac (Martinez Trainer)

They’re supposed to say that. But they’re what, 18-to-1 underdogs?

Anytime you step in there, you want to be concerned. Aleem is not in there by mistake. He’s in there by what he’s done in the past.

But one thing I know about him is he’s got losses, right? So, he knows how to lose.”

Lester Martinez

“You’re not Crawford, and I’m Lester Martinez. And that title is going home, back to Guatemala.”

I’m very happy everyone supporting me here. I even see other nationalities such as Mexico that will be supporting us this Saturday. I feel the love and this Saturday, you guys will see a great fight.

“I have a lot to win. I have a lot to lose.”

“I’m not feeling too much pressure, just motivation.”

“After the last fight, my fans expect a lot from me. Regardless of how I win, I want to do well. I know after this fight I will be the official challenger to Canelo-Mbilli, so I promise to do my best.”

“We know what’s at stake. I’m well prepared. I’m fighting a guy with a lot of experience. I have a lot of experience myself and I’m ready to win.”

“Being fight of the year implies a lot. We did a good job, despite the outcome. All the positives I got from that, I’m ready for Saturday night. Whether Aleem brings it or not, I’m ready to bring my all.”

Lester Martinez vs. Immanuwel Aleem Fight Approved for WBC Interim World Super Middleweight Championship on ProBoxTV March 21

(February 12, 2026) – Boxing history will be on the line when WBC #3-ranked Lester Martinez faces WBC FECARBOX and #14-ranked Immanuwel “The Chosen One” Aleem on Saturday, March 21, as the WBC Board of Governors has voted unanimously in favor to sanction the fight for the WBC Interim World Super Middleweight Championship.

Martinez (19-0-1, 16 KOs) from Guatemala City, Guatemala, will be looking to become his country’s first-ever world champion when he takes on Richmond, Virginia’s Aleem (22-3-3, 14 KOs) in the main event of ProBoxTV’s “The Contender Series,” broadcast live (7 pm EST/4 pm PST) from the NOS Event Center in San Bernardino, California.

“I really thought I won the fight on September 13, and it’s been frustrating to not get a rematch with Mbilli,” said Lester Martinez. “I very much appreciate Mauricio and the WBC Board of Governors for giving me this opportunity. It’s been my dream to be the first Guatemalan champion ever. I can’t wait for March 21.”

It’s been a roller coaster ride to get to this dream fight for Martinez, who hasn’t been in the ring since his “Fight of the Year” split draw with now WBC World Champion Christian Mbilli in a battle for the interim world title in September. Considered a highlight of the entire show, the fight was televised live on Netflix on the undercard of Terence Crawford’s victory over Canelo Alvarez.

Because of the competitive nature of the fight, the WBC ordered an immediate rematch between the two, which was effectively canceled earlier this year after Crawford was abruptly stripped of the WBC belt he won beating Alvarez and Mbilli was elevated to full champion.

Martinez personally petitioned the WBC to elevate his fight with Aleem to an interim title fight earlier this week while being honored with a ring in the shape of the sanctioning body’s symbolic green and gold belt for his Fight of the Year with Mbilli.

His efforts appear to have worked, as the approval is granted and the 30-year-old is now one fight away from boxing history.

The WBC based its support elevating Martinez vs. Aleem to a title fight based on a few important factors: Mbilli vs Martinez was awarded the Fight of the year 2025 by the WBC. A rematch for such fight was ordered by the WBC but for a variety of reasons such could not be materialized. Mbilli, who is the WBC World Champion, will not be active for a prolonged period of time, while Martinez vs Aleem has been secured to happen in the immediate future.

“As President of the WBC, I am thrilled to know such an amazing young man as Lester,” said Mauricio Sulaiman, “We are committed to supporting boxing and its development, worldwide.”

ProBoxTV’s Garry Jonas says he’s happy for Lester and his team, who was one point, or two rounds, away from winning a fight many thought he deserved to win. One judge scored it 97-93 for Martinez, one had it 96-94 for Mbilli, and one saw it even at 95-95. Jonas is also excited to be able to present a world championship fight in his March 21 main event.

“I’d like to thank the WBC for granting Lester this opportunity,” said ProBoxTV CEO and Founder Garry Jonas. “I know it’s not easy doing their job with all the twists and turns that can take place at this level of the sport. This is a fair and reasonable outcome that Lester gets a chance to fight for the same belt he competed with Mbilli for. This is a big deal for Lester and his country. Guatemala has never had a world champion and we’re very hopeful he can bring the belt home on March 21.”

Crawford makes history, takes down Canelo for third undisputed title

By Norm Frauenheim

LAS VEGAS – There was no blood. There were no knockdowns. There was only Terence Crawford.

Crawford’s dance, as brilliant as it was defiant, continued Saturday, reaching a peak few others have achieved or even imagined with an upset of Canelo Alvarez in front of a crowd of 70,482 at Allegiant Stadium.

Crawford, booed when he entered the arena and booed for weeks after the fight was announced, did what he was always done in his historic path to undisputed title in three weight classes.

He did it with his feet, frustrating Canelo at almost every turn in winning a unanimous decision. It was 115-113 on two scorecards and 116-112 on the third. Two of the cards appeared to be closer than what the dominant Crawford did in moving across the ring, in and out of harm’s way and into history.

Canelo always seemed to be a step behind, a dance partner that couldn’t quite keep up with the master.

If there was a surprise, it was in Crawford’s footwork. He moved his feet with an agility not seen in almost a decade. For 12 rounds, the 37-year-old Crawford sustained the dance that earned him the undisputed super-middleweight title and a place among boxing’s all-time greats.

If he had been around in another time, the game would have Five Kings alongside the foursome of Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns and Roberto Duran.

In his hometown – Omaha, they simply call him Bud. On this night, however, boxing historians could have called him Sugar. He was that good, a former welterweight and junior-welter champion coming up two weight classes to take down Canelo, one of the most feared punchers in his day,

After it was all over, Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) went to one knee and looked toward Allegiant Stadium’s ceiling as though he was looking to the heavens.

Thanks, he said

The thank-you was preceded by a confident Crawford who opened the fight in the southpaw style. His right hand led the attack and hinted at imminent alterations. But he never switched up, never went from left-handed to right-handed. But the threat was always there, forcing Canelo to be wary.

Above all, Crawford’s two-handed, ambidextrous threat  threw some hesitancy, if not outright  confusion into Canelo’s tactical plans.

Crawford right hand landed first, followed by a glancing left in the opening round. The crowd roared. Canelo remained cautious.

But in the second round, the popular Mexican hinted, perhaps, at what he had planned. He moved forward, almost stalking and in an almost straight line that led him to his target: Crawford’s midsection.

The body punch landed, forcing Crawford to step to one side and then another. In the third, it began to look as if Crawford was poised to pick up the pace.

In the fourth, he did, landing a couple of quick hands, first a right than a left. Momentum in the fourth, however, suddenly shifted when Canelo landed a straight right hand. Crawford looked at at him and smiled as if to say: You can’t catch me.

Over the next eight rounds, Canelo never could.

Callum Walsh dominates in one-sided decision over Vargas Jr.

Callum Walsh had too much power and too much accuracy.

In the end, he had too much of everything in overwhelming Fernando Vargas, Jr, who has a legendary name but none of his father’s resilient skillset.

On the scorecards, Vargas (17-1, 13 KOs) never had a chance. The judges nearly scored the 10-round junior-middleweight fight as a shutout for Walsh (16-0, 11 KOs), an agile Irishman who knows his way around the ring.

It was 99-91 on two cards and 100-90 on the third in the final fight before the Terence Crawford-Canelo Alvarez main event at Allegiant Stadium.

Mbilli, Martinez fight to a bruising draw

It was punishing, a fight full of momentum swings and exhausting exchanges of punches that landed everywhere and from all angles. It was hard to pick a winner.

In the end, nobody could..

Christian Mbilli-Lester Martinez was a draw. The good news is that the super-middleweight fight set the stage for a sequel and perhaps a great new rivalry. The only winner was the gathering crowd for the main event, Canelo Alvarez-versus-Terence Crawford. The early undercards didn’t offer much in terms of drama. Allegiant Arena eats were empty. Knockouts were few. Cheers were muted.

Then, Mbilli and Martinez stepped through the ropes.

In the early rounds, it looked as if Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs) might win easily. He appeared to have an edge in the number and power of inside punches. In the middle rounds, however, Martinez. (19-01, 16 KOs), showed a stubborn streak and and his own brand of body shots and uppercuts. The Guatemalan wasn’t going anywhere. In the eighth and again ninth, it looked as if the body assault had robbed Mbilli of his energy. He looked fatigued.

In the final moments of the tenth and final round, however, Mbilli recovered, scoring repeatedly and often enough to perhaps ensure a draw. One judge scored it for him, 96-94. One scored it for Martinez, 97-93. On the third, it was a draw, 95-95

Can’t wait for the rematchThe punishing fight ended with exchanges of punches and moment

Mohammed Alakel wins unanimous decision

Saudi junior-lightweight Mohammed Alakel (5-0, 1 KO) employed faster hands and feet, scoring quickly and repeatedly for a unanimous decision  overTravis Crawford (7-4) a hard working fighter from (7-4-1) from Corpus Christi, TX in the first fight on the Netflix part of a card featuring Terence Crawford-versus-Canelo Alvarez at Allegiant Stadium Saturday.

Brandon Adams wins rematch, scores decision over Bohachuk

Brandon Adams wore a gray wig to news conferences and weigh-ins. He shed the costume in the ring and answered questions about his age with a variety of punches.

Body shots, hooks and uppercuts were repeated answers to Serhii Bohachuk, who called the 36-year-old Adams — a Los Angeles middleweight — an old fighter.

Age is just a number, or at least it was for 10 rounds of punishing shots from multiple angles from Adams in a rematch victory Saturday at Allegiant Stadium over Bohachuk (26-3, 24 KOs) , a Ukrainian known for his power.

In the end, Adams made the 30-year Bohachuk look old.  Adams, who scored an eighth-round TKO of Bohachuk in 2021, landed shots almost at will, winning a unanimous decision in the final fight before the Netflix portion of the Canelo-Crawford card.

Jermaine Franklin wins dull decision

It was unanimous.

On the cards.

And in the seats.

Jermaine Franklin Jr. won the decision. He also shared some of the contempt hurled at Ivan Dychko from a few fans scattered across Allegiant Stadium’s 65,000 seats Saturday on the Canelo Alvarez-Terence Crawford card in a heavyweight matinee Saturday.

Franklin (24-2), of Saginaw MI,  and Dychko (15-, 14 KOs), a two-time Olympic bronze medalist from Kazakhstan, clinched and clutched more than they punched through 10 forgettable rounds. By the fifth, the scattered crowd began to jeer. By the eighth, the boos began to echo through the empty arena.

By the end of the 10th, there were cheers.

Finally, it was over.

Tsutsumi scores first-round stoppage

Reito Tsutsumi, a Japanese junior lightweight, didn’t need much time, mostly because Javier Martinez didn’t have much of anything at all.

Tsutsumi (3-0, 2 KOs) did it all within 2:18, walking down Martinez (7-3,4 KOs), hurting the Dallas fighter first with a succession of body shots and then finishing him with with straight punches that put Martinez on the canvas, a lonely figure in an empty building early on a card featuring Terence Crawford-versus-Canelo Alvarez fight.

Sultan Almohammed made a succsessful pro debut with a four-round unanimous decision over Martin Caraballo in a lightweight bout.

In round one, Almohammed dropped Caraballo with a right to the jaw.

Almohammed, 132.5 lbs of Jeddah, SA won by scores of 40-36 on all cardsa and is now 1-0. Caraballo, 133 lbs of Hollywood, FL is 0-1-1….Marc Abrams

Raiko Santana scored a mild upset by stopping Steven Nelson in the opening round of their 10-round light heavyweight bout.

Santana landed a hard right hand that hurt Nelson and a follow-up flurry forced the stoppage at 2:38.

Sanatana Of El Paso, TX is 13-4 with with seven knockouts. Nelson of Omaha, NEB is 20-2…...Marc Abrams

Potential Mexican star, Marco Verde stopped Sona Akale in round our of their six-roumd middleweight bout.

In round one, Verde landed a right hook that put Akale on the canvas.

In round four, Verde continued the assault and referee Mark Nelson stopped the bout at 1:11.

Verde, 158 lbs of Mazaltan, MEX is 3-0 with two knockouts. Akale, 158 lbs of St. Paul, MN is 9-4….Marc Abrams

LESTER MARTINEZ STOPS LUCAS DE ABREU MARTINS IN THE FOURTH

Plant City, FL (July 13, 2023) – Guatemalan super middleweight LESTER MARTINEZ (now 16-0 14KO’s) proved to be too powerful for the always game LUCAS DE ABREU MARTINS (now 14-4 11KO’s) in their scheduled ten round super middleweight bout last night at the ProBox Event Center in Plant City, FL.

Martinez successfully utilized a stalking aggression against De Abreu, who, while finding range with this jab and combos at a distance, didn’t have the pop to keep Martinez off of him. Martinez began to tag De Abreu in the second with solid combinations.

In the third round, a right cross clipped De Abreu in the temple, sending him to a delayed knee. De Abreu got up and tried to stay in the pocket, attempting to trade with Martinez, but Martinez’ punches were more effective. An uppercut had De Abreu down again in the third round, but the durable De Abreu rose again, ready to continue.

De Abreu made it into the fourth round, but another barrage of combinations capped by a stiff left hook sent De Abreu down once more, as referee Emil Lombardi stepped in to stop to the fight 33 seconds into the 4th round.

De Abreu had this to say about the fight, “We’re fine. In boxing it’s like that sometimes. You fall and you just have to stand back up. I congratulate my opponent; he was the stronger man tonight.”

Five fights were streamed live and exclusively on UFC FIGHT PASS®, the world’s leading digital subscription service for combat sports. To sign up for UFC FIGHT PASS, please visit www.ufcfightpass.com.

The pro boxing event was one of the highlights of the 40th Nayarit Festival, which is celebrated between March 10 and 27, displaying the cultural identity of Nayarit like the Indigenous community, and also providing entertainment by offering regional artists at national and international events. It attracts between 20,000 and 30,000 people each day of the festival.

The boxing event was presented by Roy Jones Jr. (RJJ) Boxing Promotions in association with De La O Promotions, World Cup Boxing Series and Team Cruz Promotions.

Tapia (13-3-1, 10 KOs), the former WBC FECOMBOX super lightweight champion, and lightweight Cruz (13-4, 12 KOs) combined for 22 knockouts in their 25 victories (88-percent win percentage).
