Manny Pacquiao versus-Floyd Mayweather Jr.? Did anyone really want to see it all over again?

Didn’t think so.

The good news is that it looks as if the rematch – or is that redundancy? –won’t happen because of the legal mess surrounding Mayweather, who used to call himself Money May.

Lawsuits that seem to multiply by the day, however, suggest money may be gone and on to a life of uninterrupted court dates.

The latest evidence came Thursday when Mayweather’s exhibition against Mike Zambidis in Athens Saturday was called off, according to federal court records filed in New York.

The bout was in jeopardy after CSI, an events company reportedly contracted to stage Mayweather dates, sued, alleging breach of contract. CSI also filed for an emergency injunction to halt the fight. According to the suit, CSI claims it has rights to stage other Mayweather exhibitions, including one against Mike Tyson.

But it was never clear when – or if – the Mayweather-Tyson exhibition would ever happen. Now, it’s fair to say that the Pacquiao-Mayweather rematch is in doubt.

In effect, that’s what Pacquiao told Boxing Scene’s Lance Pugmire Thursday in the wake of news that Mayweather- Zambidis was suddenly just another Greek myth. No live stream was reported. No ticket sales were reported. No opening bell was inevitable.

Then, Pacquiao told Boxing Scene that the Mayweather rematch, scheduled for Sept. 25, had been postponed indefinitely. Indefinitely can mean lots of things, including forever.

Deepening doubt is there because of the avalanche of lawsuits involving Mayweather, who is believed to have earned a billion dollars in his prize-fighting career.

Dollars, of course, have been the only reason for a rematch. Mayweather’s victory over Pacquiao eleven years ago is memorable only for the record revenue it generated. The fight itself was a dud. Mayweather won a unanimous decision in what was a unanimous bore.

International interest before the fight was squandered during the fight. Then, the money generated by the fight was apparently squandered. Who wants to do that all over again?

That verdict has already been delivered by fans who aren’t likely to pay again for another money-grab between fighters more than a decade past their primes.

Notes on a Scorecard

Jose Benavidez Sr., dad and trainer of three division champion David Benavidez, confirms reports this week that he has talked with troubled and talented Tank Davis about being his trainer. “Tank will announce his plans and we’ll go from there,’’ Jose Sr. tells The Good Fight.  There’s uncertainty because of Tank’s problematic legal issues.

Floyd Mayweather cast doubt last Saturday on whether his September 19 sequel with Manny Pacquiao will be documented as a real fight and where it’ll happen, but tickets were available this week for a date already scheduled on the Las Vegas Sphere’s calendar.

Tickets, priced from $1,882 to $29,214, were up for sale on the Sphere’s website Thursday amid controversy raised by Mayweather, whose comments suggested the event was not the done deal it seemed to be when announced February 23 by Netflix and CSI Sports.

During a busy boxing day dominated by Sebastian Fundora’s stoppage of Keith Thurman last weekend, Mayweather told Vegas Sports Today that the venue was uncertain.

“We don’t know if it’s a hundred percent going to be there,’’ Mayweather said during a reported meet-and-greet at Caesars Palace.

Days later, however, the MSG-sponsored Sphere is moving forward as if it is certain.

Mayweather also told Vegas Sports Today that the fight would not count in the official record book, which has him at 50-0 after a boxing victory over then MMA star Conor McGregor in August 2017.

“This is not actually a fight,’’ Mayweather said. “It’s an exhibition.”

In a video posted by Source of Boxing, Pacquiao countered, saying he didn’t sign up for an exhibition.

“…he signed a real contract,’’ says Pacquiao, who lost a 2015 decision to Mayweather in a much-hyped fight remembered mostly for the record-setting pay-per-view revenue. “Yes, the contract that we signed is a real fight. I wouldn’t fight an exhibition.’’

There’s a theory that Mayweather is attempting to re-negotiate, because he wants to protect his official record. He might need money, but he still values the 0 on the loss side of the ledger more than anything. It’s his identity. Maybe, his future. He’ll be 50 next year. One loss might ruin the birthday party.

From the Netflix and Sphere point of view, however, that risk is part of the drama, a compelling reason to watch. After all, the first fight, more than a decade ago, was a dud.

As of Thursday, it’s not clear whether Mayweather thinks he’s found a loophole that will allow him to re-negotiate. The Pacquiao camp is certain he does not.

Mayweather is in breach of contract,

Jas Mathur, Manny Pacquiao Promotions CEO, told ESPN and Boxing Scene.  Now, there are reports that Mathur is demanding Mayweather re-confirm that he intends to fulfill the terms that –Pacquiao says — he agreed to.

Will he? Mayweather, a calculating and clever master of the feint within the ring, also uses it outside of it. Keep them guessing, before and after opening bell.

He’s done it often enough to think he’s trying to do it all over again. It also might help explain the odds. Mayweather opened as a slight betting favorite, minus 175. A couple of days later, money came in on Mayweather, making him more of a favorite, minus 190.

There are no odds on whether the fight, real or not, happens at all.

Not yet anyway.

Carrying one of boxing’s most iconic names, Jimuel Pacquiao Jr. (0-0-1) returns for his second professional outing at Manny Pacquiao Promotions: Taduran vs. Perez. Making his debut under widespread attention last November at MPP’s U.S. launch, Pacquiao Jr. rose to the occasion, leaving a sold-out Southern California crowd on its feet after a spirited, back-and-forth battle with Brendan Lally. Although the bout was ruled a draw, Pacquiao Jr. displayed impressive grit, composure, and relentless pressure—traits long associated with his father, Manny Pacquiao. At just 25 years old, he now takes the next step in his professional journey, embracing both the opportunity and the responsibility of ushering in the Pacquiao legacy into a new generation. Also preparing for his professional sophomore appearance, Darrick Gates (0-1) will meet Pacquiao Jr. on Friday, April 3. Fighting out of Idaho Falls, Idaho, the 36-year-old Gates turned professional in 2024 and looks to earn his first win in his career against the young star.

In a highly anticipated middleweight feature bout, rising Mexican American star and the reigning WBC Silver Middleweight Champion Lazaro Lorenzana (19-0, 13 KOs), squares off against Esneiker Correa (16-6-3, 6 KOs) in a middleweight tilt. Boasting an undefeated record and championship-caliber skill, Lorenzana, 26, is on the heels of a statement victory over middleweight mainstay Luis Arias at Manny Pacquiao Promotions: Lorenzana vs. Arias. Although born and raised in San Diego, Lorenzana travels between the U.S. and Mexico to prepare for his fights. The undefeated prospect’s last two outings have been for the WBC Silver Middleweight Championship and WBC Regional Championship, proving that he is well on his way to world title opportunities. Before his dominant professional career, Lorenzana built an impressive amateur resume, including a silver medal in the Jr. Olympics representing Mexico. Lorenzana is now poised for his second professional fight stateside near his hometown against Venezuela’s Correa. 

Fighting out of Miami, the 27-year-old Correa enters his co-main feature with intentions of stealing Lorenzana’s booming momentum. An experienced competitor in his own right, Correa’s professional career spans back to 2017. Correa aims to capitalize on the young star and get back on track with a statement victory in his first contest in California.

In a clash of unbeaten featherweights, Joseph Subia (3-0-1, 3 KOs) takes on Francisco Casillas (3-0-2, 2 KOs) in a scheduled four-round bout. Representing Atascadero, California, Subia brings a perfect knockout ratio into the matchup and looks to build on his momentum following a first-round stoppage victory in his last outing. Standing opposite him is Maywood, California’s Casillas, who returns to the ring for the first time since 2022. In a lightweight showcase, West Covina, Calif.’s Paolo Barredo (5-0, 2 KOs) faces off against Mexico’s Roberto Almazan Monreal (13-26-1, 5 KOs). A 19-year-old budding prospect training out of Walnut, Calif., Barredo makes a quick turnaround following a unanimous decision victory over Martin Vargas Ramirez earlier this month in Tijuana. Standing across from him is the seasoned Monreal, nearly a decade older and boasting 35 more professional bouts. Now based in Miami, Monreal brings veteran savvy and durability into the matchup as he prepares for his first appearance of 2026. With a wealth of experience against a wide range of opponents, Monreal aims to test the rising prospect and play spoiler on fight night.

The Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch marks the latest chapter in Netflix’s record-breaking expansion into live boxing. VERONA, N.Y. — Manny Pacquiao Promotions (MPP) today announced opponents for Jimuel Pacquiao Jr. (0-0-1) and Curmel “Big Deal” Moton (8-0, 6 KOs), as both promising prospects return to action on Saturday, February 28 at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York.

Returning to Upstate New York for the first time since his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame last June, Manny Pacquiao and MPP bring a talent-stacked card back to U.S. soil. The event is headlined by a 10-round WBO Featherweight International Championship showdown between knockout artists Elijah Pierce (21-2, 17 KOs) and Lorenzo Parra (23-1-1, 17 KOs)—a high-stakes clash originally slated to headline MPP’s sold-out U.S. debut before illness forced its postponement.

Pacquiao Jr. steps back into the fray for his sophomore outing against Puerto Rico’s Luis E. Santana Figueroa (0-2) in a four-round lightweight fight. Pedro “Kid Pedro Heneral” Taduran (19-4-1, 13 KOs) is a two-time IBF Minimumweight World Champion known for his rugged southpaw style and relentless pressure inside the ring. Taduran first captured the IBF title in 2019 and reclaimed it in 2024, establishing himself as one of the division’s most tenacious and decorated fighters at 105 pounds.

Standing across from him will be Gustavo “Smiley” Pérez Álvarez (16-1-0, 5 KOs), a fast-rising contender from Mexico with a seven-fight winning streak and an aggressive approach that has made him one of the sport’s most intriguing prospects in the light-flyweight ranks.

LAS VEGAS, NV – Jan 9, 2026 — Manny Pacquiao Promotions (“MPP”) today announced its second U.S. event, scheduled for Saturday, February 28, at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York. This sophomore event stateside for MPP marks Manny Pacquiao’s return to Upstate New York for the first time since his monumental induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame last June. The action-packed fight card will be headlined by a 10-round WBO Featherweight International Championship bout between knockout artists Elijah Pierce (21-2, 17 KOs) and Lorenzo Parra (23-1-1, 17 KOs), a matchup originally slated to headline MPP’s sold-out U.S. debut before being postponed due to illness.

Now rescheduled, Pierce and Parra will finally square off in the main event as both fighters look to position themselves for a world title opportunity.

Pierce, 29, enters the bout on the strength of 12 straight victories and on the heels of securing the WBO International Featherweight Championship last July against Michael Dasmarinas. Now the Oklahoma City-born star faces his greatest challenge in Parra, who has an identical staggering knockout count of 17. In a main event pitting two featherweights at the top of their game, Parra has not suffered a defeat in over eight years as he prepares for just his third fight in the United States in his career.

The co-main event will feature a 10-round US WBC Silver Super Lightweight Title fight between hometown favorite Bryce Mills (20-1, 7 KOs) of Liverpool, NY and Tobias Green (12-3-1, 4 KOs) of Lake Park, FL, adding regional intrigue and championship significance to the card.

Mills, 24, has made Turning Stone Resort Casino his home base of sorts as he has competed at the historic venue six times, registering six wins. A quickly rising contender in the super lightweight division, Mills aims to kick off 2026 with another victory, following a successful 2025, which included three dominant wins.

Also featured on the February 28 lineup will be the return of Manny “Jimuel” Pacquiao Jr. (0-0-1), continuing his professional journey under the guidance of Manny Pacquiao Promotions, following a controversial draw in his pro debut. Showcasing promise and composure in his pro debut, all eyes will be on Pacquiao Jr. as he competes near the International Boxing Hall of Fame, a place where his father was ceremoniously enshrined last year.

Highly regarded 19-year-old prospect Curmel “Big Deal” Moton (8-0, 6 KOs) will return to the ring in association with Mayweather Promotions, as he looks to extend his impressive unbeaten streak. A standout talent, Moton caught the attention of undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters in the sport’s history.

Opponents for both “Jimuel” and Moton will be announced in the coming weeks.

TEMECULA, Calif. (NOV. 30, 2025) – Manny Pacquiao Promotions (MPP) delivered an electric night of fights for their U.S. debut event at Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, Calif. 

Lazaro Lorenzana (19-0, 13 KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico, captured the WBC Regional Middleweight Championship by scoring a 10-round unanimous decision over Luis Arias (22-6-1, 17 KOs) in the main event of Manny Pacquiao Promotions’ (MPP) U.S. debut live on ESPN Deportes and ESPN Knockout.

Born and raised in San Diego, Lorenzana, in just his second fight in the U.S., pressed the action from the opening bell and only lost three rounds on the judges’ scorecards in his main event outing. Arias, the former IBF USBA Middleweight Champion, recently went back to school to complete his mortgage license before the fight was scheduled.

Marking a new beginning for the legendary Pacquiao name, Manny Pacquaio’s eldest son, Jimuel Pacquiao(0-0-1) began his professional boxing campaign by thrilling the sold-out Pechanga crowd with a thrilling majority draw against Chicago native/high school English teacher Brendan Lally (0-0-1). In the co-main event marking the pro boxing debuts of both fighters, Pacquiao and Lally stood toe-to-toe throughout the four-round, non-stop extravaganza, trading shots to the head and body, as the contest featured numerous momentum changes. 

Two judges both scored the bout 38-38, giving Pacquiao the first two rounds and Lally the final two. One judge ruled the first two rounds to Pacquiao, also awarding him the close fourth round.

Pacquaio, who enjoyed a successful three-year amateur career, welcomed a baby girl to the world with his fiancé in the last week and made his dad a grandfather for the first time. Lally, who also teaches African-American literature at Hyde Park Academy High School in Chicago, won the United States Intercollegiate Boxing Association 140-pound collegiate national championship while studying English at the University of Illinois in 2022.

In the evening’s first title bout, southpaw Terry Washington (6-0, 5 KOs) of San Bernardino, Calif., dispatched his sixth opponent in as many contests and captured the WBC USA Light Flyweight Championship by shutting out Lima, Peru’s Ricardo Astuvilca (23-5, 5 KOs) in a 10-round unanimous decision. Washington, who started boxing at eight years old, enjoyed a storied amateur career in which earned the title of Most Outstanding Boxer at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials and was an International Gold Medal Finalist for USA Boxing.

The second televised bout featured Tijuana, Mexico’s Jose Russell (17-1, 11 KOs) made his United States debut and rebounded from his only loss by thoroughly dominating Saleto Henderson (10-3 7 KOs) and scoring a sixth-round TKO. Russell, who turned 24 on November 23, sent Indianapolis, Indiana’s Henderson to the canvas twice in the final minute of the opening round. The hard-hitting southpaw then floored his counterpart for the third time two minutes into the fourth. Following the sixth round and at the suggestion of Henderson’s corner, referee stopped the contest.

Kicking off the action on the main card in a battle of Californians, Garden Grove’s Michael Bracamontes (14-2-1, 6 KOs) earned his fifth consecutive victory by dominating William King (6-3-2, 3 KOs) of Lynwood, fighting at Pechanga Resort Casino for the third straight time. Bracamontes, who turned pro at 17, won all but two rounds on the judges’ scorecards.

Prior to the ESPN Deportes and ESPN Knockout-televised portion of the event, Las Vegas’ own, Rodrigo Mosquera III (2-0, 1 KO) remained undefeated by scoring a four-round unanimous decision over Bryan Domingo (0-4-1). The first bout of the night featured Victorville’s Sheldon Payne (1-1, 0 KOs) earning his first pro victory with a four-round majority decision over Adil Gadzhiev (3-2, 1 KO). Following the main event, Javier Zamarron (11-0, 5 KOs) of Las Vegas secured an eight-round unanimous decision over Alejandro Meniano (7-1, 4 KOs) and Hollywood’s Alexis Alvarado (9-1-1, 5 KOs) registered a unanimous decision victory over Philippines native Garen Diagan (10-8-1, 5 KOs)

TEMECULA, CALIF. (NOVEMBER  28, 2025) – Manny Pacquiao Promotions’ (MPP) U.S. debut will have a new main event pitting undefeated Lazaro Lorenzana (18-0, 13 KOs) and grizzled veteran Luis Arias (22-5-1, 17 KOs) in a middleweight tilt between two knockout artists for the WBC Regional Championship. 

The International Hall of Famer and eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao was on hand during Friday’s official weigh-in and final press conference before all the fighters’ step into the ring at Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula on Saturday night. Lorenzana from San Diego and Las Vegas’ Arias were elevated to the main event slot after Elijah Pierce and Lorenzo Parra fell out due to an illness.

With a career spanning over a decade, Arias is the former IBF USBA Middleweight champion, a title he spectacularly defended twice. Arias now aims to utilize his experience to get back in the win column. In just his second fight in the U.S., WBC Silver Middleweight champion Lorenzana prepares for the stiffest test of his career against the experienced Arias. Lorenzana enters this bout on the strength of two straight knockout victories in 2025. Born and raised in San Diego, Lorenzana travels back and forth between Tijuana to train as he gears up for his homecoming tomorrow.

LOS ANGELES – Manny Pacquiao Promotions (MPP) today announced that their highly anticipated U.S. debut on Saturday, November 29, is sold out and will be streamed live on ESPN Deportes and ESPN Knockout, beginning at 7 p.m. PT / 10 p.m. ET. 

Legendary ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr. will be in the squared circle, welcoming the fighters into the ring and two-time World Champion Shawn Porter will provide social media coverage from the event.

Doors for the event open at 5 p.m. PT, with the first fight of the night taking place at 6 p.m. PT. The event is completely sold out, with only a small handful of tickets available for resale at Ticketmaster.com.

Only boxing is killing boxing. It’s an old line, yet

relevant as ever this week with news of talk about a Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao rematch.

It’s been a decade since the first one, which has been hard to forget for all the wrong reasons. It was a dud, memorable only for all the money that was made. Pacquiao got rich. Mayweather got richer. Everybody else got robbed.

Many in a record pay-per-view audience of 4.6 million for the May 2015 fight grumbled at what they paid for and walked away, never to pay again.

For ten long years, the business has worked through futility and frustration, attempting to bring back old fans while trying to create a few new ones. The jury is out. So are the fans.

Yet, younger faces and new money, Saudi money, are creating newfound possibilities.

The business is also coming off a notable triumph in Terence Crawford’s scorecard upset of Canelo Alvarez in mid-September in front of a crowd of more than 70,000 at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium and a reported audience of more than 42 million on Netflix.

The numbers add up to a reason for cautious optimism, emphasis on the caution. Crawford’s masterful performance reminded an eroding and increasingly exasperated fan base of why boxing was once called The Sweet Science.

It still can be.

But Mayweather-Pacquiao 2 might make a returning crowd wary of getting fooled all over again. Caveat emptor is attached to any prizefighting venture, of course. But Mayweather-Pacquiao almost stands alone for what went wrong and what not to do all over again.

It’s no surprise that Pacquiao and Mayweather would want to, of course. Another chance at even a fraction of the money earned a decade ago is motivation enough to try once more. Pacquiao confirmed there have been negotiations.

“Right now, we have a lot of negotiations about my next fight; there’s a possible rematch with Floyd Mayweather,” Pacquiao said Wednesday during a news conference in Manila. “…”I’d love to have another fight, a rematch with Floyd Mayweather.”

Of course, he would.

However, there was no immediate confirmation from Mayweather, who reportedly has an agreement for an exhibition with Mike Tyson, also next year.

Pacquiao, however, made it sound as if a rematch — perhaps next spring — would be a genuine bout, one for the books.

“A real fight,” he said.

That, of course, would be a risk to Mayweather’s unbeaten, 50-0 record, a cornerstone to his claim on being the best ever. Unbeaten might be an issue, a legacy Mayweather does not want to jeopardize  

Pacquiao is 46 and coming off an entertaining draw with Mario Barrios in a July comeback. Against Barrios, he proved he can still fight. But for how much longer? The former Filipino Senator will be 47 in December.

Meanwhile, Mayweather, who has been on the exhibition tour for years, is 48. He’ll be 49 in late February.

Even a decade ago, both were late in their primes, yet fought with the hesitance of older men. Mayweather won a decision. After the scores were announced and the boos subsided, Pacquiao said he fought with a shoulder injury.

Even then, the fight was said to be a couple of years past its due date. Ten years later, it’s just ancient history. It’s time to move on, both for them and a game fighting to separate itself from their past.

David Benavidez on the move

David Benavidez, a Phoenix-born fighter now living in Miami, has already moved his training camp to the Middle East for his looming light-heavyweight title fight against 175-pound veteran Anthony Yarde in Riyadh Nov. 22.

With the move, he hopes to adjust to new surroundings and time zone. Benavidez will be fighting in Saudi Arabia for the first time. All of his fights have been in the U.S. and Mexico.

In his first fight in the U.S., former WBC Silver Middleweight champion Lorenzana prepares for the stiffest test of his career against the grizzled Arias. Lorenzana enters this bout on the strength of two straight knockout victories in 2025. Born and raised in San Diego, Lorenzana travels back and forth between Tijuana to train as he gears up for his homecoming fight next month.

Boasting a 100% knockout rate, San Bernardino, Calif.’s Washington made his professional debut last year. Now, “Terrible” Terry has established himself as one of the most dangerous contenders in the light flyweight division as he prepares to face Astuvilca, a seasoned veteran 15 years his senior.

Hailing from Hollywood, Alexis Alvarado (8-1-1, 5 KOs), who has not suffered a defeat since 2021. squares off against Philippines’ Garen Diagan (10-7-1, 5 KOs) in a super flyweight brawl.

The original Thrilla in Manila on October 1, 1975, is etched in history as boxing’s ultimate war. Yesterday, today and tomorrow played out on a three-sided weekend last Saturday that summed up what boxing has been, is now and might soon become.

Manny Pacquiao brought the golden-oldie nostalgia. Oleksandr Usyk re-asserted himself as the best of this era and maybe a few others. And Jesse Rodriguez provided another preview at what could be next.

It’s hard to say just who made the biggest statement. Pacquiao’s enduring celebrity dominated the headlines and perhaps contributed to some of the frustration over the scorecards for his majority draw with Mario Barrios, who retained his welterweight title with a second successive draw. Maybe, there’s been some erosion in the 46-year-old Filipino’s skillset, but his likability is intact, as powerful as ever.

“Manny, Manny’’ chants filled the MGM’s Grand Garden Arena like a memorable lyric from an old pop song. I’m not sure he’ll ever be a welterweight champion again, but he’ll always be remembered more than the collection of forgettables among today’s belt-holders.

Pacquiao, who talked about a rematch with Barrios and already is mentioned as a possible challenger for Rolly Romero’s belt, reminds us of what we miss. There’s a huge risk there. He could get hurt. But he’ll fight on, and a Pied Piper-like crowd is sure to follow.

Pacquiao’s immense popularity is matched by what Usyk has in terms of respect for his discipline and smarts. He’s an undisputed heavyweight champion all over again with his stoppage of Daniel Dubois at London’s Wembley Stadium.

It’s not exactly clear what undisputed means anymore. Acronyms get in the way with so-called mandatories and hollow threats to strip. Already, the World Boxing Organization is ordering Usyk to defend its piece of the heavyweight puzzle against Joseph Parker. 

Usyk hasn’t replied and doesn’t have to, of course. It’d be nice if these self-proclaimed ruling bodies quit issuing orders and just showed Usyk some mandatory respect. He’s a great champion, whose unbeaten record over 24 bouts is notable for what it doesn’t include. He’s never had a pro fight in his home country, war-torn Ukraine. Yet, he fights on, winning with an unerring instinct. To wit: He knows what he’s doing.

The stoppage of Dubois in a rematch has generated a lot of talk about how he would have done against the all-time greats in boxing’s fabled division. Even Muhammad Ali’s name has been dropped into the conversation. Who knows? It’s a fun argument, but it’s impossible to compare fighters from different generations.

I’m not even sure he’s the greatest Ukrainian heavyweight ever. Shouldn’t Wladimir Klitschko and brother Vitali Klitschko, now the major of Kyiv, be included in the conversation? I’m sure Usyk himself would mention them. Then again, Usyk knows something about respect for history, Ukrainian and boxing.

It’s not exactly clear what Usyk does next. Parker is an okay fight, but it doesn’t bring anybody to the edge of their seat or to a live-stream audience. At 38 – 39 in January, Usyk will be exiting his prime, a stage that Pacquiao left long ago.

In terms of prime time during last week’s triple-header, there was only Rodriguez, a poised and master tactician who continued to fulfill everything it means to be Super Fly by unifying the 115-pound belt with a 10^th-round stoppage of Phumelele Cafu in Frisco, Texas.

Rodriguez’ victory got less attention than Pacquiao and Usyk, but at one level it was the most significant bout of the three.

At 25, Rodriguez is 21 years younger than Pacquiao, 13 years younger than Usyk. Pacquiao and Usyk are moving on. So, too, is the way we watch boxing. ESPN is leaving ringside with its last Top Rank show Saturday featuring unbeaten Puerto Rican junior-middleweight Xander Zayas against Mexican Jorge Garcia in New York at The Theater in Madison Square Garden.

How we watch, who we watch is about to change.

Enter Bam, a nickname that Rodriguez manages to fulfill nearly every time he answers an opening bell. To be fair, it was hard to judge the Cafu victory. Cafu, a South African, was fighting in the United States for the first time after scoring a notable upset of Kosei Tanaka in Japan for a belt last October.

The circumstances dictated that Rodriguez do more than just win. He had to be brilliant. He was, delivering a methodical beatdown that led to a 10^th-round knockout at Ford Center on the Dallas Cowboys complex.

Short-term, it set up what had already been announced – Bam in a bid for a third Super Fly belt against Fernando Martinez Nov. 22 in Riyadh on a card that includes Phoenix-born David Benavidez in a light-heavyweight defense against Anthony Yarde.

Long-term, it puts Rodriguez a little bit closer to what has been a dream fight for a couple of years. On the pound-for-pound ratings, Rodriguez’ last victory put him within talking – if not striking – distance of Japanese star Naoya Inoue, the current junior-featherweight champion who is a consensus No. 2, second to Usyk.

Rodriguez, who jumped into the pound-for-pound debate with a stoppage last June of accomplished Juan Francisco Estrada in downtown Phoenix on the Suns home floor, is a consensus No. 5 in ratings released this week.

Bam’s victory over Cafu prompted his promoter, Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn, to put him at No. 2, ahead of Inoue, who is not among Hearn’s favorites. He’s ripped Inoue for a resume that – Hearn says – includes weak opposition. His criticism of Inoue might have helped land Inoue’s next opponent, Murodjon Akhmadaliev, Sept. 14 in Nagoya, Japan.

It’s no coincidence that Hearn also represents Akhmadaliev. It’s also no coincidence that Hearn publicly ranks Bam ahead of Inoue. Some early negotiations – opening salvos — have already begun.

A lot still has to fall into place if in fact Bam-versus-Inoue has any chance at ever happening. Inoue is projected to fight Mexican Alan David Picasso, perhaps in December.

Then, there’s Junto Nakatani, a unified bantamweight champion living and training in southern California. Just a couple of months ago, Nakatani had been calling out Bam. But that talk ended, abruptly, after Nakatani stopped Ryosuke Nishida June 8 in Tokyo.

Nakatani-versus-Inoue has been at the top of the want-to-see list for Japanese fans. It’s also at the top of fights most wanted by Japanese promoter Akihiko Honda, known simply as Mr. Honda.

Multiple sources in Japanese media and boxing circles told The Boxing Hour that Mr. Honda told Nakatani to forget about a fight with Bam any time soon. The reasoning is as clear as it is solid. Mr. Honda doesn’t want to risk Nakatani-Inoue, a fight expected to generate record receipts in Japan. In part, that’s an acknowledgement of just how dangerous – how good – Bam is.

The path is still there, if Inoue beats Akhmadaliev, Picasso and then Nakatani. There are doubts he can, in part because of the way he was knocked down by little-known Ramon Cardenas in Las Vegas May 4.

Cardenas floored him in the second round. Inoue went on to win by TKO in the eighth. But there’s talk that Inoue would not have been able to get up if the knock-down punch had been delivered by Nakatani, who’s noted for his power.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez has to beat Martinez and then continue to win as he moves up the scale, first to 118 pounds and then 122.

A lot still has to happen. Last Saturday, a lot did.

LAS VEGAS — Manny Pacquiao stepped off a scale and looked up toward a corner high above the floor at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. It was a flag that celebrated his legacy. It was also a symbol of a story still unfolding. 

Another chapter awaits, this one as risky as any in the iconic career of a fighter now 46 and still fighting for more more.

The flag was there to mark Pacquiao’s 16th bout at the old arena. After it’s over Saturday night, nobody in the rich history of the historic address near the well-traveled intersection at Tropicana and The Strip will have fought there as often. 

Pacquiao will rank No. 1, one bout more than his old rival Floyd Mayweather and four more than Oscar De La Hoya, who ranks third on the list and perhaps first among the Pacquiao victories that turned him into an enduring Filipino legend. 

The question, of course, is whether the flag will wave goodbye or say hello to another chapter in Pacquiao’s pursuit of history. He’s written a lot of it.

He’s been a champion in eight different weight classes. After a political career that included a run for the Filipino presidency, the Sergeant, Senator and statesman is back in an attempt to become the second-oldest champion in boxing history. 

To pull it off, he’ll have to beat a fighter 16 years his junior (Prime Video on card starting at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT). Thirty year-old Mario Barrios has a belt — the World Boxing Council’swelterweight version — and a fresh face without any of the gray that’s evident in Pacquiao’s facial hair.

On the scale Friday at a ceremonial weigh-in in front of a roaring crowd, Barrios came in at 146.2 pounds looking every much as though he had done the work. His trainer Bob Santos bragged and gestured about a sculpted upper body that suggests no task was left undone. Pacquiao, who was at 146.8 pounds, looked solid, yet far from the Bruce Lee look-alike of a decade ago.

Those different looks — gray-streaked beard and young fresh face — stood in contrast, a stark reflection of all the risks Pacquiao faces. Yet, risk has always been a part of his story. It’s why he fights. Why we watch. 

He took a risk against a bigger and better-known name in De La Hoya in 2008. He blew him away, stole De La Hoya’s celebrity and created his own kind of global stardom. 

This time, however the risk is in the nature of time itself. How much of it has eroded the magnificent reflexes Pacquiao had in his prime? How will he attack Barrios’ superior reach and punches when Pacquiao steps inside. 

There’s a minefield full of questions, the simplest of which might be the one that confronts everybody in the middle-aged demographic. 

Who will get up Saturday morning? The Pacquiao we remember against De La Hoya, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales and so many more? Or will he be just another 46-year-old guy struggling to walk through the aches and pains that come with the years. It’s impossible to say, which makes this fight impossible to pick.

Pacquiao hasn’t fought since his scorecard loss to late stand-in Yordenis Ugas four years ago. Ugas’ youth and slick footwork — combined with some youthful energy — allowed the Cuban to dart in, out and away in a slow, yet deliberate plan that Pacquiao failed to counter.

A key question is whether the middle-aged Pacquiao will have to try to take out Barrios early. Fatigue appeared to be a Barrios’ weakness in a draw with Abel Ramos last November. Ramos was able to catch and hurt him with successive body shots over the last four to five rounds. 

But Barrios (29-2-1, 18 KOs) wasn’t fighting a 46-year-old man. Ramos, an aggressive welterweight from Casa Grande south of Phoenix, is 34.

Nevertheless, Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs) is confident that four years away from the ring helped him conserve much of his skillset and energy.

The four years, he said, were a time of healing and re-evaluating what he wanted in life, post-politics.

“I missed boxing,’’ Pacquiao said. “The four years were good. It was good to rest.’’

But time doesn’t rest. It keeps moving forward, stubbornly and in the relentless way that defined the Pacquiao reign from flyweight to junior middleweight. 

Pacquiao stopped most everybody he faced. But not even he couldn’t stop that clock, his biggest opponent in one the biggest risks he’ll face in a many-sided life. 

Pacquiao has made a lifestyle out of doing what people think he can’t. That’s a reason not to pick against him versus Barrios or anybody else he might face if a victory Saturday launches him into another risky date against another young champion. Maybe, a rematch with Mayweather awaits him. Pacquiao is never out of options, promise and potential. 

Against Barrios, however, the question is whether he’s out of time.

LAS VEGAS – July 18, 2025 – Mexican star Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz will now face all-action contender Omar Salcido in a 10-round super lightweight showdown featured on tomorrow night’s PBC Pay-Per-View on Prime Video from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Cruz was originally scheduled to face Angel Fierro, who was forced to withdraw due to a medical emergency, while Salcido had previously been set to compete on the non-televised undercard.

The four-fight pay-per-view is headlined by the return of Hall of Famer Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao continuing his legendary career by challenging WBC Welterweight World Champion Mario “El Azteca” Barrios.

In the co-main event, WBC Super Welterweight World Champion Sebastian “The Towering Inferno” Fundora and Australia superstar Tim Tszyu will square off in a rematch of 2024’s bloodiest fight. Kicking off the pay-per-view is former two-division champion Brandon “The Heartbreaker” Figueroa and featherweight contender Joet Gonzalez in a 12-round WBA Featherweight Title Eliminator at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Cruz vs. Salcido will follow

Buoyed on by his passionate fan base, Cruz (27-3-1, 18 KOs) became a world champion in March 2024 as he hurt Rolly Romero badly in round one before eventually ending the fight in round eight via TKO to claim the WBA title. Most recently, Cruz bounced back from a loss to Jose Valenzuela by out-slugging countryman Fierro in that decision triumph in February. A native of Mexico City, Cruz shot up the rankings in 2020, announcing his presence with an electrifying first-round knockout over veteran Diego Magdaleno in October before adding dominant decisions over Francisco Vargas and Jose Matias Romero. Trained by his father Isaac Cruz Sr., the 26-year-old challenged undefeated superstar Gervonta Davis in December 2021, a fight that saw Cruz lose by decision to become just the second fighter at the time to see the final bell against Davis.

LAS VEGAS — Tim Tszyu saw why boxing is called bloodsport. He saw a lot it. All his.

His craft — the inescapable nature of his sport — was defined by his blood in a gruesome fight that left him looking more like an accident victim than the warrior he has chosen to be about 16 months ago in a  split-decision loss to Sebastian Fundora.

Tszyu remembers what he saw. Or, perhaps what he couldn’t.

“I was distracted,’’ he said Thursday, nearly a year-and-a-half after he was cut at the end of the second round at the top of his forehead and at the center of his hairline at Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena in March 30, 2024. “When I went back to my corner, I wasn’t thinking about my fight. I was thinking about the blood.’’

It never quit. 

Neither did he. 

Tszyu fought on, his vision obscured and his focus distracted. But that blood, including the DNA that motivated him to endure through the 12th round, continues to drive him now. He fights on, hoping only that the bleeding won’t resume. Still, he’s hell-bent on risking that and perhaps more in a rematch Saturday that he has pursued since Fundora turned his face into a crimson mask. For more than 10 rounds, he couldn’t see clearly. The clarity of what he seeks, however, has always been there.

“That answers the question of why my corner didn’t stop the fight,’’ Tszyu said of the first bout that ended with Fundora winning on two cards, 116-112 and 115-113. The third card favored Tszyu, 116-112.

Fundora left the ring with two junior-middleweight belts and newfound stardom. Tszyu was left with his first loss and all the stitches.

In the wake of the nasty defeat, there were doubts, many left by a third-round stoppage loss to Bakhram Murtazaliev, who knocked him down four times before his corner surrendered in a stunning stoppage in October, 2024 in Orlando. Suddenly, it looked as if blood and more had been lost on that shocking night against Fundora.

Tszyu went on to scored a fourth-round TKO of Joseph Spencer last April at home in Australia. It was a solid stoppage, but it didn’t exactly stop some of the questions about whether the promises in Tszyu’s career had been stopped, all in one bloody night.

Tszyu, the son of feared Kostya Tszyu, is back in Vegas to say that it hasn’t been.

“I will put together  a different performance,’’ said Tszyu, who will share the stage in a co-main event to a card featuring 46-year-old Manny Pacquiao’s comeback against welterweight champion Mario Barrios at the MGM’s Grand Garden Arena. “A more intelligent one.’’

Tszyu’s bloodied, yet narrow loss to Fundora was preceded by complications. Initially, the opponent was supposed to be Keith Thurman. But Thurman got hurt in training, forcing a late switch. 

Twelve days before opening bell, the skinny, yet NBA-tall Fundora got the gig and the improbable victory that has put him on the fringe of enduring stardom. In part, perhaps, he’s fighting Tszyu a second time to prove that his emergence is more about his skillset and poise than his 6-foot-6 height.

Fundora relinquished a belt, bypassing a mandatory defense against Xander Zayas for a rematch with Tszyu. Against Tszyu, there’s a chance for Fundora to validate his place in the boxing galaxy, even at the risk of more blood.

“Yeah, why not,’’ Fundora said Thursday in a tone that suggested it would not be his blood.

The only promise from both is that their bout will steal much of the anticipated thunder from Pacquiao and Barrios.

“May the best man win, but we just don’t know who the best man is yet,’’ Tszyu said in a matter-of-fact way that says he’s willing to bleed some more to answer that

The press conference featured WBC Super Welterweight World Champion Sebastian “The Towering Inferno” Fundora and Australia superstar Tim Tszyu, who will meet in the co-main event of a stacked PBC Pay-Per-View event on Prime Video.

Also competing in pay-per-view action and facing off Thursday were Mexican rivals Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz and Angel Fierro, who meet in a 12-round rematch, plus former two-division champion Brandon “The Heartbreaker” Figueroa and featherweight contender Joet Gonzalez, who kick off the pay-per-view with a WBA Featherweight Title Eliminator at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

The press conference also included fighters competing on the three-fight PBC on Prime Video lineup that precedes the pay-per-view. The show will see former world champion Gary Russell Jr. take on Hugo Castañeda in the 10-round main event, unbeaten super bantamweight contender David “Rey” Picasso face Japanese contender Kyonosuke Kameda, and former world champion Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo battle Jorge Mata in the opening attraction at 5:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. PT.

These fights will lead up to the much anticipated showdown between Hall of Famer Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and WBC Welterweight World Champion Mario “El Azteca” Barrios as it tops a four-fight PBC Pay-Per-View on Prime Video.

LAS VEGAS – July 15, 2025 – The fighting pride of the Philippines, an eight-division world champion and as of last month, an inductee into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. While it seems like the larger than life Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao has accomplished everything you can in the sport, he could add yet another chapter to his historic legacy this Saturday, July 19 when he challenges WBC Welterweight World Champion Mario “El Azteca” Barrios in the main event of a PBC Pay-Per-View event on Prime Video from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

In addition to becoming the first fighter to accomplish the incomprehensible feat of winning a world title after a Hall of Fame induction, Pacquiao could break his own record as the oldest welterweight world champion in history if he takes the WBC belt from Barrios. Pacquiao originally set the mark in July 2019, as he defeated the previously unbeaten Keith Thurman at 40-years-old. In an era that’s seen superstars in their 40’s such as Tom Brady and LeBron James continue to excel at the highest levels, Pacquiao is out to prove once again that he’s a generational athlete that transcends the sport.

Pacquiao will return to the ring at a place that he’s made his own, the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the fight capital of the world, as he makes his 16^th appearance at the venue, more than any fighter in the venue’s considerable history. With his 15^th main event on July 19, he ties the mark set by fellow legend Floyd Mayweather at the venue, and only trails Mayweather in total wins at the arena (15-10). The two inextricably linked all-time greats are also tied for the most title fights at MGM Grand with 12 each.

On July 19, Pacquiao will be facing a foe with a familiar fighting heritage in the Mexican-American Barrios, as Pacquiao has defeated a who’s-who of Mexico’s best throughout his career. Since the year 2003, Pacquiao has beaten 12 Mexican or Mexican-American fighters including legends such as Juan Manuel Marquez, Oscar De La Hoya, Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera and Antonio Margarito. These triumphs include some of Pacquiao’s most notable wins and helped him earn the attention and adoration of boxing’s rabid Mexican fanbase.

While racking up all of these accomplishments, Pacquiao has garnered respect from a wide range of boxing luminaries who have shared their favorite “Manny Moments” ahead of the July 19 event. Amongst those who spoke about Pacquiao were former opponents Thurman and Barrera, as well as former sparring partner and welterweight champion Shawn Porter.

“It’s never been about one moment for me when it comes to Manny Pacquiao,” said Thurman. “My favorite moment is any time he’s busted off those eight-punch combos. With an opponent on the ropes, world-class competition, and he just fires off an eight-set. It’s happened many times, but every time I’ve witnessed it, it’s sparked a little joy in my heart.”

“I have two favorite Manny moments, the first is when he beat Oscar De La Hoya, because I thought it was impossible,” said Barrera. “I thought it would never happen and then De La Hoya remained seated and it was over. The second one was the way he beat Miguel Cotto. It was two Hall of Famers and Manny being really impressive in that weight class.

“What makes Manny so special is the bond and closeness with his fans. His heart is what makes everyone like him. He likes to put on a show, give it all for the fans, and most importantly, he becomes a warrior when he steps in the ring.”

“I have a rare Manny Pacquiao moment, because there aren’t too many that get to spar with the legend,” said Porter. “He flew me and my dad out to the Philippines and we met for the first time and he was like ‘okay this is gonna be fun.’ I was shocked because this was the first time that someone treated getting in the ring with me like it wasn’t a big deal…After I talked to my corner I turned around and took a step toward the center of the ring and it was like this moment came over me like ‘you’re sparring Manny Pacquiao.’ I was in a daze for like the first 10 seconds. And he caught me with a good straight left hand in the first minute and it woke me up. I was like ‘that dude’s got some power’, and then we were off to the races.”

When prognosticating the results of this Saturday, July 19 matchup, the oddsmakers have installed the younger reigning champion Barrios as a betting favorite. Renowned trainer and boxing analyst Stephen “Breadman” Edwards agrees with the sentiment, emphasizing how gargantuan the task at hand is for the 46-year-old great.

“It would be an incredible feat for a 46-year-old fighter to come back and win the welterweight world title,” said Edwards. “It’s hard to even imagine someone being off for a few years and then coming back at 46 and winning it. In all honesty, I think that this may be an impossible task. If anyone can do it, Manny can do it, but right now I’m favoring Barrios.”

Despite the odds, several of the polled boxers are favoring Pacquiao to pull off the upset, including Porter, Barrera, and reigning WBA Super Lightweight World Champion Gary Antuanne Russell.

“Pacquiao is a punches in bunches type of guy and he can crack,” said Russell. “He’s shown that his punching power can get the job done. Barrios is youthful and a selective puncher. I don’t think he’s gonna be able to sit there and take pictures. Manny will make you pay if you wait too long. He’s always shown that he wants to get the fight going.

“Pacquiao is a high-tempo fighter and Barrios has struggled with that pace. Barrios is a tough competitor, but I feel like he still has a lot to learn. Manny has been in there with many champions and I believe he has the tools in his arsenal and that it’ll show the night of the fight. Barrios is gonna have to shock the world. He has to show enough to make Manny respect him. I’m leaning towards Manny being victorious, but may the best man win.”

“I do believe that Manny Pacquiao is gonna beat Mario Barrios,” said Porter. “I know that everyone is talking about his age. That’s the theme, can the old man beat the young man? I think this old man is always gonna be too much until he hangs up the gloves.”

“I think this will be a very interesting fight,” said Barrera. “Pacquiao is a superb warrior, an eight-division world champion who will give it his all and who likes to put on a show. This sets up to be a fight where we will really see these guys collide and make the fans the real winners.

“Barrios is an active defending champion, and while he’s not as complex as the other current champions, he will be dangerous once he steps into the ring. I would like to see Pacquiao win because of the legend that he is. I’ll go with Manny Pacquiao as the winner, but if Barrios wins, it’ll be because he proves that he’s the better fighter right now.”

No matter who you see winning on July 19, the evening is undoubtedly shaping up to be historic, and despite any doubts coming from the outside, Pacquiao has expressed the strong self-belief that he will leave the ring as world champion once again.

“The fire, determination and eagerness to work hard is still there,” said Pacquiao. “I’m still enjoying running the mountains. Not every fighter has this feeling. This is a blessing, because I’ve been through so many big fights in my career and I’m still here. I’m back…It would mean a lot for me to become world champion again. A highly-decorated Filipino amateur, highlighted by two trips to the Olympics, an Olympic bronze and a silver at the 2019 World Champions, Marcial (5-0, 3 KOs) will look to continue his rise in the pro ranks on July 19. The 29-year-old has won each of his last two fights by knockout, including most recently stopping Thoedsak Sinam in March 2024. He will be opposed by the Dorchester, Mass.-native Joseph (11-2-1, 5 KOs). The 35-year-old had a seven-fight win streak snapped in June by a narrow majority decision against Casey James Streeter.

Originally from Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico and now fighting out of California, Salcido (20-2, 14 KOs) will return to action after going the distance with undefeated lightweight contender Andy Cruz in January. The 25-year-old had previously earned a career-best victory when he knocked out former interim champion Chris Colbert in the ninth-round of their October 2024 showdown. He will be opposed by Gallegos (8-1, 6 KOs) who will fight for the first time since a May 2024 stoppage of Paulo Figueroa. A native of Durango, Mexico now fighting out of North Las Vegas, Gallegos’ only defeat came via a narrow split-decision in 2018 against the then-unbeaten Sulaiman Segawa.

Manny Pacquiao has never faced a risk he’s feared. He came to Los Angeles, then an emerging little guy yet mostly unknown Filipino, to ask Freddie Roach to train him. He beat a much bigger Oscar De La Hoya amid concern that he would get seriously hurt. He’s scored dramatic knockouts and been knocked out, face down. He’s been a Sergeant and a Senator. A Filipino street kid, he ran for President.

From canvas to celebrity, there’s not much he hasn’t seen.

Or done.

Now, he’s poised to make a comeback against Mario Barrios next week at 46-years-old, an age that poses a risk as hard to measure as any. 

Already, he’s repeated a predictable line. Age is just a number, he says. No, it isn’t. Inevitably, It takes its toll, eroding quickness and endurance, destroying tendons and timing. But it’s also sneaky. Nobody ever really knows when or how it’ll arrive to do its damage.

Much of this confrontation with risk on July 19 at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand rests in Pacquiao’s ability to beat time to the punch once more. 

George Foreman did it, winning the heavyweight title when he was 45 with a knockout of Michael Moorer in 1994. Bernard Hopkins was 49 when he won his last title, a light-heavyweight belt in 2014. Foreman and Hopkins are the modern examples of what can happen, both powerful reasons to think Pacquiao will, too.

But Pacquiao — remember, he’s done it all — is also the very example of why he won’t. He lost to Yordenis Ugas in August 2021. That was four years ago. Pacquiao was 42, yet had trouble with Ugas’ Cuban elusiveness. Pacquiao lost a unanimous decision and announced his retirement a couple of days later.

I was one of the few to pick Ugas then. Ugas’ footwork and defensive skill just turned Pacquiao’s attempts to catch him into a haphazard exercise — hits-and-miss, mostly miss. It would be easy, too easy, to pick against an even older Pacquiao all over again. 

But the 30-year-old Barrios brings a different style to the ring. Against Abel Ramos last November, Barrios got tired in the later rounds. The slowing Barrios energized Ramos, who launched an aggressive body-to-head assault. In the end, the fight ended in a draw. 

Barrios kept his welterweight belt. Ramos, a tough and competent welterweight from Casa Grande south of Phoenix, deserved a rematch. Still does. But Barrios has shown no interest in a sequel.

Instead, he got Pacquiao and the paycheck that comes with it. Guess here, Pacquiao and trainer Freddie Roach have watched — and watched — the Barrios-Ramos video. 

It’s a roadmap for what Pacquiao hopes to accomplish in the later rounds against the favored Barrios. Barrios might prove to be the perfect dance partner for Pacquiao in this comeback. Call him the wise choice, and wisdom is also a part of getting old. Pacquiao and Roach have plenty of that.

There’s more: Complications in the circumstances leading up to Pacquiao’s comeback in 2021 could have compromised his chances. 

Errol Spence, the original opponent, withdrew eleven days before opening bell because of an eye injury. Enter Ugas. It was a sudden move that must have scrambled Pacquiao’s camp, forcing him to suddenly abandon much of he had planned throughout months of routine in training.

Routine, like wisdom, is also part of the aging process. It gives the aging fighter a chance to meld experience and muscle memory in preparation for the specifics he saw in Spence. The sudden switch to the comparatively unknown Ugas dropped that playbook into the spit bucket. Pacquiao fought Ugas as though he was searching, all in futility.

Against Barrios — by now a known quantity, Pacquiao figures to have an overall plan that will allow him to put his muscle memory back to work. 

Does that mean I’m picking Pacquiao? No. I just think he has a much better chance in this comeback than he had in the last one. It promises to be close, very close. In the end, the real factor is his age, a wild card risky because of the unknowns that will confront Pacquiao with unforeseen challenges, all critical to the fight’s outcome. 

Hatton plans comeback

Ricky Hatton is making a comeback? Of course, he is. Hatton, also 46, announced he’ll be back Dec. 2 in Dubai, is coming through a door left wide open by Pacquiao.

Hatton played a chapter in Pacquiao’s long legendary run. Pacquiao blasted out Hatton, sending him into a never-more orbit with a scary second-round knockout 16 years ago —May 9, 2009 — also at Vegas’ MGM Grand. Power makes its own statement and creates its own future. Pacquiao had plenty of it that night. In part, it’s what we remember about Pacquiao. In part, it’s why we’ll watch his comeback. Is the power still there?

But power is also double-edged. What it gives, it takes away. The lasting memory of Hatton is seeing the bottom of his shoes. That’s how high Pacquiao launched him with his knockout shot. Hatton fought one more time, three years later. 

But it was clear he was finished in 2012 and still should be in 2025. But he had a part in the Pacquiao show, which is about to resume for everybody who was there and still wants to be. For Hatton, hopefully there won’t be an encore.

**GARY RUSSELL JR. VS. HUGO CASTAÑEDA **

Returning to action for the first time since his nearly seven-year title run ended in a fight where he injured his shoulder, Gary Russell Jr. will look to show off the skills that made him boxing’s then longest reigning male champion as he makes his lightweight debut in a 10-round fight against veteran Hugo Castañeda.

Russell (31-2, 18 KOs) has stayed close to the sport since last fighting, keeping his late father Gary Sr.’s legacy going by training his younger brothers, WBA Super Lightweight World Champion Gary Antuanne and contender Gary Antonio. The Capitol Heights, Md., native first captured the WBC Featherweight World Championship in March 2015 by stopping former multiple division champion Jhonny Gonzalez, and held it until losing a majority decision to Mark Magsayo in January 2022. His run as champion included a stoppage of former world champion Kiko Martinez, and a dominant unanimous decision over former world champion Joseph Diaz Jr., both of whom went on to win championships after losing to Russell.

“I’m so glad to be back on this great event on July 19 in Las Vegas,” said Russell. “I’m ready to shake off the dust and entertain by doing what I love. Make sure you tune in to see me do my thing.”

Originally from Reynoso, Tamaulipas, Mexico, Castañeda (15-2-1, 11 KOs) has ended each of his last three victories by knockout, including an upset over the previously unbeaten Felix Garcia in April 2024. Most recently, Castañeda came up short in an April clash against undefeated prospect Demler Zamora. Now fighting out of Alamo, Texas, the 23-year-old will step into the ring stateside for the sixth time as a professional, where he’s amassed a 3-2 record. Castañeda turned pro in 2021, racking up wins in his first 12 bouts.

“This is a huge opportunity for me and I’m coming to take full advantage of it,” said Castañeda. “I know that I’m facing a great fighter who’s accomplished a lot, but I have everything it takes to get the victory. I’m training hard to be at my best and show everyone what I can do on July 19.”

**DAVID PICASSO VS. KYONOSUKE KAMEDA**

Already owning the WBC Silver title, along with being ranked top five by The Ring and top 10 by the WBO at 122-pounds, the undefeated David “Rey” Picasso will look to continue his ascent toward a super bantamweight world championship when he faces Japanese contender Kyonosuke Kameda in a 10-round attraction.

The 24-year-old Picasso (31-0-1, 17 KOs) hopes to paint another masterpiece and keep his perfect record intact as he makes his 2025 debut following a 2024 campaign that saw him score five victories. Picasso’s big year included triumphs over two former title challengers, as he stopped Damien Vazquez in May and earned a 12-round unanimous decision over Azat Hovhannisyan in August. A native of Mexico City, Picasso closed the year in December with a third round TKO over Yehison Cuello.

A cousin of Japan’s world champion Kameda brothers, Kameda (15-4-2, 9 KOs) will look to bounce back from a February defeat to former two-division world champion Luis Nery. The 26-year-old entered that fight on a five-fight winning streak, with one draw sandwiched between his last eight victories. A native of Osaka, Kameda will make his U.S. debut on July 19, having previously fought exclusively in Japan before he challenged Nery in Mexico.

“I’m very excited to make my U.S. debut on July 19 in Las Vegas,” said Kameda. “I’ve gained great experience from my last fight and I’m going to bring it into the ring against Picasso. I come from a family of world champions and I know that I have to do whatever it takes to get my hand raised.”

**MARK MAGSAYO VS. JORGE MATA CUELLAR**

A former world champion at 126-pounds, the Filipino power-puncher Mark Magsayo steps into the ring looking to impress on the undercard of his idol Manny Pacquiao, as he continues his run at super featherweight by challenging Mexico’s Jorge Mata Cuellar in their 10-round opening attraction on Prime Video.

Magsayo (27-2, 18 KOs) captured the WBC 126-pound world title in 2022 by defeating former longtime reigning champion Gary Russell Jr. via decision. Originally from Tagbilaran City, Bohol, Philippines and now fighting out of Southern California, Magsayo dropped the title to Rey Vargas via a narrow split-decision in a July 2022 contest that saw Magsayo send Vargas to the canvas in round nine. Magsayo would go on to engage in a memorable toe-to-toe battle with former champion Brandon Figueroa in March 2023, losing the decision after 12 rounds. Since that fight, Magsayo has won three straight, including knockouts over Isaac Avelar and Bryan Mercado, plus a unanimous decision over Mexican contender Eduardo Ramirez.

“It’s an incredible feeling to be back fighting on the undercard of my idol Manny Pacquiao for a second time,” said Magsayo. “I’m extremely grateful to my whole team for the opportunity. It’s surreal to be training and fighting alongside Manny every day. It brings back memories of being eight-years-old and watching him fight for the first time. Even with all of this, I’m locked in on my goal of becoming a two division world champion. I can’t wait to step into the ring and give the fans an exciting fight. I feel great at this weight and I know that I’m facing a tough Mexican fighter. We’re both going to be ready to give the fans fireworks on July 19!”

The 24-year-old Cuellar (21-2-2, 13 KOs) enters his July 19 showdown on a five-fight winning streak that followed a narrow split-decision loss to Jose Luis Vazquez Hernandez in August 2023. A product of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, Cuellar will be fighting in the U.S. for the first time when he steps in against Magsayo. The eight-year pro has shown his ability to fight into later rounds, as his last three fights have all gone the 10 round distance, and all in his favor.

“This is going to be another great toe-to-toe Mexico vs. Philippines battle,” said Cuellar. “I’m extremely motivated to be facing a former champion like Magsayo on a huge event headlined by Manny Pacquiao. A former world champion at 140-pounds, Barrios (29-2-1, 18 KOs) stamped his place among the welterweight elite in September 2023 as he dropped former champion Yordenis Ugas twice to capture the interim belt by unanimous decision. Barrios followed that up by sending Fabian Maidana to the canvas as well on his way to another dominant decision victory, and was elevated to WBC Welterweight World Champion following the bout. His first defense of the title featured Barrios going toe-to-toe with Abel Ramos in one of 2024’s best fights in action that saw both men score knockdowns and that ultimately ended in a split-draw and Barrios retaining the belt.

“It’s all smiles between us right now, but when that bell rings, we’re going in there with bad intentions. He’s trying to take my title and I have to do whatever it takes to make sure he doesn’t.

“This has been a tremendous camp. It’s very rare to have a camp this smooth. The sparring has been perfect and I’m very happy with how everything has gone. The hard work has already been put in.

“I’m looking to go out there and showcase my skill and use any advantage I have to get my hand raised at the end of the night.

“During training camp I haven’t really been working with the mentality that I’m facing a legend. At the end of the day, he’s another man who’s trying to fight for my title. I respect what he’s done in the sport and the person he is, but come fight night, that respect won’t be there.

“When the fight was first brought to me I wasn’t sure whether to take it as respect or disrespect, because he wanted me. But regardless, I’m the champion for a reason and I’m gonna show why I’m holding the WBC belt.

“Manny’s movement and hand speed is looking on point right now. That’s what has always made him a great fighter. He doesn’t have an easy style to replicate and that can make sparring tricky. That’s one of the reasons he’s been so successful and why he’s in the position that he is.

“I have a great team behind me. I’ve been fortunate to be with some of the best in the business from the beginning. I’ve just stayed focused and stayed in the gym and that’s why I’ve gotten these opportunities. I give it 100% every time.

“I’ve always trained for every fight like it’s a world title fight, so this is no different. I know who I’m going against and I know the threat he is inside of the ring. But with my team and everything we’re working on in the gym, I just have to go out and execute and we’ll be victorious.

“I’ll definitely be showcasing my indigenous roots for my walkout. That’s something I love to feel as I’m entering the ring. We’ve got something special planned.

“Having my sister Selina in my camp has been really important. We started this boxing journey together when I was six and she was eight. We’ve always been in each other’s corner since the very beginning. Nobody knows me better in and out of the ring than her.”
