VIDEO: Dalton Smith Vs Mathieu Germain | Undercard Live Press Conference

SMITH VS. GERMAIN + UNDERCARD FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Frank Smith:

“That’s the plan and that’s the focus. Dalton Smith is Mandatory Challenger for the WBC Super-Lightweight World Title and that is the fight we’ll see next. Dalton can’t overlook Saturday night. He’s got a test in Mathieu Germain.

“The key always for us with Dalton was to keep up the activity. He had a period where he was out for a bit with injuries in 2024. So for 2025 it was about keeping his activity up. He boxed in January and won that European Title – something that he’d always wanted to do.

“Now it’s about stepping up and picking the right opponent that’s going to give him those rounds as he goes into the higher levels and challenges for the World Title. There’s no point him having a walkover fight because it does nothing for him when he goes into these big fights. We truly believe that pound-for-pound, Dalton Smith is one of the greatest fighters in Britain today and he’s going to go all the way.”

Dalton Smith:

“I’m focused. I’m hungry. Mathieu Germain said it right there. I think he sees with my energy and the way I’ve prepared for this fight – I’m not looking at this fight as if the job is already done because it’s not. I’ve had some great sparring over and I’ve probably had one of my best camps.

“2025 is going to be a big year for me. That’s why I’ve approached this fight like it is my World Title fight. I just know when the fight night comes, there is no stress because I worked so hard for it. I feel no pressure. What is the pressure? I’m doing it for myself and I’m doing it for the team around me. It’s nobody else.

“Of course he’s going to be confident. I want him to be confident. I don’t want fighters coming over who are just making up the numbers. It’s a big opportunity for him. I’ve seen some of the footage of him. He’s been in with some good kids. He’s a solid operator and that’s why I’m not overlooking him.”

Mathieu Germain:

“Everything is on the line for me. I’ve been waiting all of my life for this type of opportunity. I live boxing. I’m always in the gym. When I got the call for this fight I was already training and I was already in shape. I think Dalton is a brilliant professional fighter but it’s going to get in his head. Everyone in this room speaks about the next fight. I’m here. I’m here to fight. I’m here for the W. I think Dalton is a true professional and he’s going to remain focused on me, but it’ll be in his head.

“Dalton is a good fighter and he does everything well. I think I have something to beat him because I’m a smart fighter. He is a true champion and very professional. That’s why I’m in boxing – to fight against good fighters. I truly think we have something and that we are going to do it. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think I could win.”

Josh Warrington:

“Back in September it was a frustrating performance against Anto Cacace. I don’t think I disgraced myself but I certainly didn’t think I got firing on all cylinders. That’s what led to me laying the gloves down. It might have been a bit of a spur of the moment decision. I felt really frustrated. Even before the decision had been announced, I said to my old man, something was missing tonight. 10% or so was off. He agreed. I did think that was it. I was kind of mourning myself for two or three weeks.

“I went back in the gym to let a bit of steam off. Then I actually watched the fight back and it wasn’t as bad as I made out in my own head. I’ve had a long career but I want to do it on my terms. When you look back at my last three fights on paper yeah I’ve lost. But I haven’t been disgraced. I thought I’d done enough to claw back the win against Lopez a few years ago. I wasn’t putting a foot wrong against Leigh Wood. I was boxing his head off until he caught me. A fighter that absolutely spangled Joe Cordina couldn’t do anything like that against me. I had my moments of success but I just didn’t pull up on it at times.

“I feel like there’s more in the tank and I want to do it on my terms. I want to leave the sport on my terms. Would I sit up here if I didn’t believe I could still win a World Title? No. I think there’s still a few more big nights to come. This one is for myself. It has to be for myself. I have to be selfish. I have to show up and get the win for myself to see what is left in there under the lights.”

Asad Asif Khan:

“I am ready for Saturday night because I have been training hard. I like him and obviously I rate him – he is a two-time World Champion. I believe in myself. I can win on Saturday night. Let’s see.”

Ryan Kelly:

“They’re both good fighters (Davis and Agyarko). Credit to both. Obviously when we got the call last week regarding Ishmael being off the card, it was a bit of a lead balloon. I thought I was off the show. Then we found out that Agyarko was going to step in. I think it makes for a great fight regardless.

“We prepared for Ishmael Davis and he’s a different fighter. Nevertheless, we’re prepared – we’ve had great sparring, southpaw and orthodox. We’re fully prepared, we’re prepared for anyone. I’ve been in the ring now thousands of times and fought all different shapes and sizes. You have to adapt and that’s what I’ll do – I’m a fighter.

“I think you’re definitely going to see the best Ryan Kelly at 154. I’ve been holding my own at 160 but they’re big guys, they’re massive. It’s time for me to be more dominant and be the bigger man.”

Caoimhin Agyarko:

“I think Ryan is a good fighter and he’s been in with top lads. He’s been in with top lads but he’s come up short. He’s campaigned at Middleweight and it probably wasn’t the right weight for him. I’ve campaigned at Middleweight and moved down. I think you’ll get a good fight on Saturday night.

“You know me, always classy never trashy. I’ll come up here and I’ll always respect my opponents but when you get in there with me on Saturday night it’s strictly business. I respect every opponent that I face. He would have been preparing for a great fight with Ishmael Davis so I know he’s had a good camp.

“I’ve just got to go in there on Saturday night and show everyone what they’ve been missing, and show Matchroom what they’re been missing. I’m ranked at number five in the world and I’m ranked that for a reason.”

Josh Padley:

“I can’t say I’m missing the work. That would be a lie if I said I was missing that. I’m living my dream. I’ve been in boxing six years now and I worked all the way through it as well. This is the stage that I wanted to be at – being a full-time professional athlete. Now I’m at that stage. Thank you to Matchroom for the opportunity. We’re here now and I’m excited to get that next stage of my career underway.

“He’s 13-0. He’s beaten 13 people to get to where he is. All fights in Serbia. I’ve been in his position where I wanted that big TV opportunity, and I wanted to face the guys who were signed. For him, this is his chance to change everything. I need to be on my A game.

“I went from Leeds Banquet Suite to Wembley Stadium and then to Saudi Arabia. It was quite a turn of events. Nobody expected me to win the last two fights. I was the massive underdog on both occasions. This time I am expected to win. There’s that added pressure to perform but that’s exactly what I’m going to do.”

Marko Cvetanovic:

“I am excited to be here, and I am really impressed with Josh Padley’s past two performances. I am very prepared and I had tremendous sparring with boxers back in my camp. This is a big opportunity for me to shine.

“It’s a big honour for me to be on such a great event against a guy like Josh here in Sheffield. It’s my first time fighting outside of Serbia but I am feeling calm and ready. A ring is a ring, wherever it is.”

Giorgio Visioli:

“I’ve left every spar, even in America, feeling very confident. I know my ability. I know my class. It’s been a great experience in Vegas. All of the Cubans I’ve sparred out there as well. I’m holding my own, in a respectful way. I don’t want to say too much.

“For sure Kane is a step up for me. Look at the guys he’s been in with compared to the guys I’ve fought before. I know he’s going to come and have a go, sit on my chest, which is fine – I don’t mind that. It’s a good test for me and I’m looking forward to showing the levels on Saturday night. I can’t wait to go.

“I just believe I show my class, box his head off. If he wants to sit toe-to-toe with me no problem. People think I can just box and move, but nobody has seen my inside game yet. I’m looking forward to showing that as well.”

Kane Baker:

“It’s been a long time. You’re only as good as your last fight. I’ll probably find out on Saturday how it’s going. They’re touting Giorgio to be a future World Champion. I’ve seen him, he looks good, he looks great. We’ll find out on Saturday.

“It’s a step up for Giorgio if he stands and has a fight with me. If he decides to box, then he could probably box rings around me. If he stands and has a fight with me then it’ll be a step up for him. I just like to be in their face until they’re pissed off.”

Leli Buttigieg:

“I’m looking forward to it. I’ve done the hard work. Grant Dennis has been in with some good fighters. He’s very experienced but he hasn’t been in with me yet. I’ve worked hard and I’m ready to go in and do the business. I’ll do whatever it takes to win this fight.

“I won’t to keep stepping up with opponents, keep working and keep getting the experience. I’d like to push on towards some titles soon. In my last fight I showed that I’ve got that dog in me. Whatever comes my way I’ll be ready for it.”

Joe Howarth:

“I’d just like to thank Eddie and Matchroom for this opportunity. It’s an opportunity that I’m going to take with both hands on Saturday night. Having Dave Allen is my corner is great. He’s always advising me and helping me out.”

SMITH: I’LL PROVE WHY I’M MANDATORY FOR THE WBC WORLD TITLE

Dalton Smith can move a step closer to a dream World Title shot when he defends his WBC Silver Super-Lightweight Title against Canada’s Mathieu Germain at the Canon Medical Arena in Sheffield this Saturday – shown live worldwide on DAZN

The undefeated 28-year-old is Mandatory Challenger to the WBC World Title held by the Dominican Alberto Puello, who defeated Spain’s Sandor Martin in a close contest to land the vacant title at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn last month.

Puello is yet to finalise a voluntary defence of his recently attained crown, and ‘Thunder’ (17-0, 13 KOs) hopes to lure the 30-year-old to his hometown of Sheffield should he get past an in-form Germain (26-2-1, 11 KOs) this weekend.

“This is my World Title fight,” said Smith. “That’s why I’ve put a lot into my camp. I’ve flown sparring partners from the other side of the world over for this. I know what can come after this fight. If Mathieu Germain thinks I’m overlooking him or thinking too far ahead then he’s wrong. He’s my World Title fight.

“Mathieu is 11 with the IBF and he’s a solid opponent. I’m not going in there relaxed. I’m going in there switched on. We’ll see what his tactics are from the first bell. We’ll work it from there. He will be coming to win but I’ll be getting the job done – he’s in the way of some huge nights for me.

“I’m expecting a tougher fight, I expected more from my last fight, but it’s boxing, you get caught in the first round or the 12th round on the chin, and it’s game over. I go into every fight expecting it to go 12 rounds, and expect my opponents to be the same. You can expect the best of me on Saturday.”

Smith kicked off the year in style by wiping out Frenchman Walid Ouizza in one round at Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena to claim the vacant EBU European Title in January. The Sheffield Wednesday supporter wants to remain as active as possible ahead of career-defining fights in the 140 lbs division.

“The guy in front of me right now is Mathieu and there’s no room for hiccups for me. I know going into this fight that I need a World Title performance. That’s why we’re back in my hometown, I’m looking to put on a big performance to put me in good stead going into those big fights.

“It’s not about picking easy opponents, Mathieu is a solid fighter, we’re picking these fights because he’s going to bring a lot to the table before these big fights, so no stone has been left unturned and I’m not overlooking him one bit, I’m going to go in there and prove why I am mandatory for the WBC World Title.”Smith vs. Germain tops a big night of action in Sheffield, former IBF Featherweight World Champion Josh Warrington (34-4-1, 8 KOs) returns to action against India’s Asad Asif Khan (19-6-1, 5 KOs) in a ten-round Super-Featherweight contest, Birmingham’s Ryan Kelly (19-5-1, 8 KOs) faces Belfast’s Caomhin Agyarko (16-0, 7 KOs) for the WBA Continental Super-Welterweight Title, Armthorpe Lightweight Josh Padley (15-1, 4 KO) takes on Serbia’s undefeated Marco Cvetanovic (13-0, 6 KOs) for the WBA International Title, Aldershot Super-Featherweight Giorgio Visioli (6-0, 5 KOs) steps up against Birmingham’s Kane Baker (19-11-2, 1 KO), Newham Middleweight prospect Leli Buttigieg (7-0, 1 KO) meets Chatham’s Grant Dennis (19-10, 3 KOs) over six rounds and Wigan Lightweight Joe Howarth (11-1, 4 KOs) kicks off the Before The Bell against Mexico’s Mario Valenzuela Portillo (8-6-2, 2 KOs).

FISHER REMATCHES ALLEN AND SMITH FACES GERMAIN AS MATCHROOM ANNOUNCE TWO FURTHER UK DATES LIVE ON DAZN

Johnny Fisher and Dave Allen will meet again in a huge Heavyweight rematch at London’s Copper Box Arena on Saturday May 17 following their controversial first fight in Saudi Arabia back in December, while undefeated WBC Super-Lightweight Mandatory Challenger Dalton Smith returns against Mathieu Germain at the Canon Medical Arena in Sheffield on Saturday April 19 – with both events shown live worldwide on DAZN

Romford’s Fisher (13-0, 11 KOs) took a contentious split-decision victory over Coinsbrough’s Allen (32-7-2, 18 KOs) on the undercard of Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury 2 at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh. Two of the judges scored in Fisher’s favour, despite the 26-year-old ‘Romford Bull’ suffering a knockdown in the fifth round of a gruelling ten-round Heavyweight clash.

Fisher returns to the scene of his sensational one-round destruction of Croatia’s Alen Babic last summer, looking to put this chapter of his career to bed, while Allen is convinced he will be able to take the decision out of the judges’ hands in the rematch by knocking Fisher out this time.

Sheffield’s newly-crowned European Champion Smith (17-0, 13 KOs) looks to keep the momentum building as he works towards career-defining fights in the 140 lbs division when he faces Canada’s Germain (26-2-1, 11 KOs) at the top of a card also featuring Matchroom’s latest signing Josh Padley (15-1, 4 KOs).

‘Thunder’ kicked off the year in style by wiping out Frenchman Walid Ouizza in one round at Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena to claim the vacant EBU Title in January, and the 28-year-old has now been named as the Mandatory Challenger to the WBC World Title currently owned by the Dominican Republic’s Alberto Puello.

Armthorpe Lightweight Padley recently put pen to paper on a multi-fight promotional deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing following his valiant display against WBC World Champion Shakur Stevenson on the blockbuster Beterbiev vs. Bivol 2 undercard in Saudi Arabia.

The 29-year-old Yorkshireman stepped in to face pound-for-pound star Stevenson at just four days’ notice and has since quit his day job as an electrician to fully focus on his boxing career, promising a big performance on his Matchroom debut next month.

Elsewhere on the card, former IBF Featherweight World Champion Josh Warrington (34-4-1, 8 KOs) returns to action, Ishmael Davis (13-2, 6 KOs) and Ryan Kelly (19-5-1, 8 KOs) meet in an Eliminator for the British Super-Welterweight Title, Aldershot Super-Featherweight Giorgio Visioli (6-0, 5 KOs) takes on Birmingham’s Kane Baker (19-11-2, 1 KO), Newham Super-Middleweight Leli Buttigieg (7-0, 1 KO) fights for the second time this year and Dave Allen-managed Wigan Super-Lightweight Joe Howarth (11-1, 4 KOs) fights for the first time in 2025.

“I’m looking forward to headlining my second sold-out event at the Copper BOSH Arena on May 17,” said Fisher. “I’m excited to put on another great fight for the fans and win in even better fashion this time around.”

“I’m excited to be getting another great opportunity,” said Allen. “To headline shows twice in London means a great deal to a kid from a small village in Doncaster. This time I will be bringing home the victory.”

“It’s an honour to be headlining again in my home city, and this time at a new venue in the Canon Medical Arena,” said Smith. “I’m sure it’ll be a lively atmosphere in there with my fans in full voice!

“I had an excellent start to the year winning the European Title in spectacular fashion and now that I’m Mandatory Challenger for the WBC Title I’m looking to keep up my activity.

“Mathieu Germain will be coming to win but I’ll be getting the job done – he’s in the way of some huge nights for me. I’m not looking ahead, but there will be one name I’ll be calling out after dealing with Germain. Alberto Puello, where you at?!”

“I am a boxer who thrives on challenges,” said Germain. “Dalton is one of them. I’ve been working hard my whole life for this moment!”

“Another two UK fight nights to bolster our unrivalled global schedule on the home of boxing – DAZN,” said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. “Johnny Fisher and Dave Allen will run it back in front of a packed out Copper Box Arena on May 17 after their thrilling back and forth battle in Saudi Arabia last December. ‘The Romford Bull’ is promising to be ten times better when they meet again while ‘White Rhino’ says he will take it out of the judges’ hands this time by knocking out Fisher. It’s going to be another electric night in East London for the Bull Army. Before that, WBC Super-Lightweight Mandatory Challenger Dalton Smith returns in his home city against Canada’s Mathieu Germain, and he can’t afford any slip ups as he waits for his dream World Title shot.”

“Two brilliant UK fight nights to add to our already packed spring schedule’, said Alfie Sharman, VP DAZN. “It’s brilliant to see Dalton back at it so quickly as he chases down a World Title in 2025, and I can’t wait for Fisher vs. Allen 2. I was ringside for the first fight, and it was brutal; a proper back and forth, action packed, fight to remember. So tune in to these two excellent matchups, only on DAZN.”

Ticket details for both events will be announced in due course.

SMITH VS. GERMAIN + UNDERCARD LAUNCH PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport Chairman:

“Welcome to Trinity House in London ahead of two very special announcements today, two UK shows live and exclusive on DAZN around the world.

“This building has a lot of history for us at Matchroom, it was where we first announced the signing of Anthony Joshua, the building for the AJ vs. Dillian Whyte press conference, the building of the announcement of James DeGale signing with Matchroom, and ironically the building we announced the signing of Chris Eubank Jr, and how things have changed, and we look forward to a huge night at Tottenham Hotspur on April 26.

“But we’re here to announce two special shows that will continue our sold-out run, firstly on April 19 in my opinion the man waiting for the WBC World Super-Lightweight title, Dalton Smith, will take on Canada’s Mathieu Germain, and so many big fighters from Yorkshire as well. Ishmael Davis will take on Ryan Kelly in a British title eliminator, there’s the return of the Leeds Warrior Josh Warrington who confirmed his spot on the card last night, and probably the busiest man in boxing right now, the new superhero around the world Josh Padley, who has received an incredible reception since fighting Shakur Stevenson in Riyadh recently. There’s some great young talents on the card with Georgio Visioli talking on Kane Baker and Leli Buttegieg in action.”

Dalton Smith:

“It’s good that the Alberto Puello-Sandor Martin fight is out of the way now, we know who the guy is, but the guy in front of me right now is Mathieu and there’s no room for hiccups for me, this is my World title shot. It means just as much to me as getting that mandatory shot when I eventually get that World title, I know going into this fight that I need a World title performance.

“This is the beauty of boxing, and it is a World title fight for me because I know what can come after. That’s why we’re back in my hometown, I’m looking to put on a big performance to put me in good stead going into those big fights. It’s not about picking easy opponents, Mathieu is a solid fighter, we’re picking these fights because he’s going to bring a lot to the table before these big fights, so no stone will be left unturned and I’m not overlooking him one bit, I’m going to go in there and prove why I am mandatory for the WBC World title.

“I’m expecting a tougher fight, I expected more from my last fight, but it’s boxing, you get caught in the first round or the 12th round on the chin, and it’s game over. I go into every fight expecting it to go 12 rounds, and expect my opponents to be the same, and that’s what I’ll be expecting on April 19, I’ll be doing the same and you can expect the best of me.”

Mathieu Germain:

“I respect Dalton Smith, he’s a pretty good fighter, a complete fighter, but it’s been a long time that I’ve been waiting for this call and it’s the moment where I have to step up and prove that I’m top 15 in the world.

“I was supposed to fight against George Kambosos and I was willing to do it, and after that, things happen in boxing and I get the call for Dalton and I’m here.

“People are always bigger and taller than me but I always find a way to win, and that’s what I am going to do on April 19.”

Giorgio Visioli:

“I know Kane will give it a good go, he’s tough and it’s a good step-up in my career, and I’m looking forward to it. I think I’ll show my class and that I’m the best Super-Featherweight in the country.

“There was a big question of me when I turned pro as to whether I could punch hard, I could always hit hard but showing it in the amateurs is different. Now I’m setting my feet and I can really let my hands go, I’ve changed and I’m a more mature pro now.

“I think I’m very close to big fights, but I’m still very young, I’m only 21 and I’m not looking past Kane as he’s a very tough opponent that’s been in with some great people.”

Kane Baker:

“I’ll be ready to go, 100 per cent. Unlike a lot of other fighters, he’s got a bit of arsehole as well, six fights in and he’s jumping in with me, so I rate him. There’s other fighters that won’t fight me, shithouses, so I am looking forward to having a ding-dong with Visioli and seeing how good he really is.

“He’s sharp as shit, I know, I’ve seen that. I’m a big Super-Featherweight and he’s fought some smaller guys, so I’ll old man and show him the ropes a little bit in there.”

Josh Padley:

“I’m ready to get back into camp, it wasn’t exactly a toiling camp last time given four days notice, so it’s nice to have a good seven week camp to be able to show what I can do with a full camp.

“I don’t think I’ve been to the shop in Doncaster without being stopped and asked for pictures, it’s a crazy come-up but I’m excited for the next step.

“The one-fight deal turning into a multi-fight deal was the best outcome that I could hope for, being with Matchroom as the leading promoters, I think I can be a force to be reckoned with.”

Leli Buttigieg:

“I’m looking forward to fighting in Sheffield again, it was a good fight last time out, a lot of people were shocked that I took that fight but I showed I can dig deep and have a tear-up, so I am looking forward to going to Sheffield for the second time and putting on a good performance.

“I want to stay active and I’m looking forward to it, and I hope to fight in London after this one, so get April out of the way first and get on the London card, sell a lot of tickets and put on a good performance.”

Ryan Kelly:

“It’s great to be back on another big show. Last time around, fighting Kieron Conway, we had a conversation and you said something to me along the lines of rolling the dice, and that’s exactly what I plan to do in this fight. Ishmael has had the big opportunities, I’m yet to have them, so a big win on April 19 and we move onto bigger and better things.

“I’ve taken everything on board and that’s what I’ll do. This fight, I plan on rolling the dice and coming away with a big win.”
