WORCESTER, Mass. (August 11, 2024) – Two fighters from Florida shined under the stars last night in most beautiful ballpark in the nation, Shearns Boxing Promotions (SBP) in conjunction with Kendrick Ball’s Camp Get Right Boxing presented “Punch-Out at Polar Park II”, at Polar Park in Worcester, Massachusetts.

A mix of cagey veterans and promising local talent entertained the crowd, recording numerous knockdowns and knockouts on a perfect night weather-wise. The event was originally scheduled for Friday night, but inclement weather reports led to a one-night postponement.

“Kendrick and I were extremely pleased with the event,” promoter Chuck Shearns said. “It was a beautiful night, and the crowd enjoyed it. We are happy for Josniel Castro capturing his first title belt.”

The main event turned out to be eight rounds of action in a highly competitive fight as Josniel “TG” Castro (13-1, 8 KOs) decisioned (79-73, 78-74 X 2) Jerry “Silent Assassin” Bradford (9-3, 5 KOs) to capture the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) U.S. Silver Super Welterweight Championship.

Fighting out of Boca Raton (FL) but with strong ties to New England, Castro showed maturity in the ring as he controlled the fight, throwing and landing the more effective punches, using his lead to set up crisp combinations. It was a storybook performance from Castro, who overcame homelessness to secure his first title belt as a prizefighter.

“This (title belt) means everything to me,” Castro commented after his fight. “This is the next step on the road to a world title. I’ve progressed a lot by listening to my coaches. I’m more relaxed now instead of just trying to please the crowd.

“Now, I’m going to get ready for my next fight. I’m not targeting any particular fighter. I just want to work my way up the rankings in whatever way it takes starting with my next fight.”

In the co-featured event, the comeback of former two-division world champion Maureen “The Real Million Dollar Baby” Shea (31-2-1, 13 KOs) couldn’t have gone better for the Irish Mexican fighter from the Bronx, who now resides in Delray Beach, Florida. Shea showed little if any rust, out-boxing and outclassing Beata Dudek (4-3, 4 KOs) to capture an eight-round unanimous decision, in which Shea won every round. She extended her unbeaten streak to 19 (18 wins, 1 draw) dating back to 2010.

Fighting for only the sixth time in the last seven years, Shea used her experience, talent and conditioning to sweep all eight rounds. “I never feel rust,” Shea remarked. “I don’t believe in ring rust because of the way I train and what I’ve learned. I’ve had to learn things after all these years. I live a good life and enjoy doing this.

“My goal is to get the titles that are rightfully mine. I’m 43 but women get better with age. I weighed 122 pounds for my pro debut (in 2005) and at 43 I weighed in at 119 for this fight. I know and understand my body.”

Promising southpaw Justin “The Bandit” Laporte, a junior middleweight from nearby Millbury (MA), turned in an electrifying pro debut, blasting out junior middleweight Tymar Miles (0-3) only 62-seconds into the opening round. Laporte connected with a perfectly thrown right-left combination, dropping Miles who managed to beat the count. Laporte threw two well placed left crosses that ended the night for Miles. The 24-year-old Laporte is a licensed realtor, studies at Nichols College, and a proud U.S. Marine.

Worcester junior middleweight Keno Luna (3-0, 2 KOs), a four-time New England Golden Gloves Champion, remained undefeated and went the distance for the first time as a professional, pitching a shutout (40-36 X 3) for a four-round unanimous decision against game Izaiah Vargas (1-11, 1 KO).

Scituate (MA) heavyweight Kevin “Big Gulp” Nagle (9-0, 7 KOs) kept his undefeated intact with a six-round unanimous decision over Mexican veteran Jose “Olympico” Humberto Corral (20-34 (12 KOs). Nagle, who won every round on one of the judges’ scorecards, five on the other two, went the full six rounds for his second fight in a row.

Two-time New England Golden Gloves Champion Jhon “D-Wave” Devers Rodriguez, of Worcester, won his pro debut in impressive fashion, knocking out Igor Santos (0-2) with an overhand fight, after an earlier knockdown from a similar punch, in the first round.

The most popular fighter on the card, Worcester welterweight “Grafton Hill’s Favorite Son” Docimo (1-0, 1 KO) had a memorable pro debut, knocking out Tracey Coppedge (0-4) midway through the opening round. A barrage of punches sent Coppedge to the canvas early in round one and a right hook closed the show at the 1:24 mark for a technical knockout.

In his first fight in 11 years, Connecticut heavyweight Joe Powers (2-2, 2 KOs) pounded Arquilla Prote’s (0-9) body, dropping him three times enroute to a second-round technical knockout victory.

In the opening bout of the evening, New York super middleweight Austin Cassee needed only 59-seconds to stop Erick Matheus Alves (0-5). Cassese decked Alves with the flurry of punches and moments later, he closed the show, throwing punches in punches against an overwhelmed Alves for a technical knockout win.

Steven “Tank” Tankanow was honored for his contributions to Worcester boxing. “Tank” was best known as the manager of multiple world champion Jose Antonio Rivera, of Worcester.

The Greg Hill Foundation received a portion of the proceeds to continue improving the lives of local families in need.

WORCESTER, Mass. (July 23, 2024) – Two-time, two-division world champion Maureen “The Real Million Dollar Baby” Shea (30-2-1, 13 KOs) returns to the ring for the first time in more than two years on the August 9th (Aug. 10 rain date) “Punch-Out at Polar Park II” card, presented by Shearns Boxing Promotions (SBP) in conjunction with Kendrick Ball’s Camp Get Right Boxing, at beautiful Polar Park in Worcester, Massachusetts.

A former World Boxing Council (WBC) Interim World Featherweight and International Female Boxing Association (IBF) World Bantamweight Champion, Shea faces Beata Dudek (4-2, 4 KOs), who fights out of Hungary by way of her native Slovakia. She competed in the 2022 IBA Women’s World Championships as an amateur.

The centerpiece of a revitalized City of Worcester, the state-of-the-art Polar Park will host the second installment of “Punch-Out at Polar Park” at the home of the Boston Red Sox Triple-A affiliate Worcester Red Sox (WooSox).

“Maureen is a friend, and we are very happy to have her fight on our show,” promoter Chuck Shearns commented. “When our fighter, Josniel Castro, relocated to Florida, Maureen was extremely gracious and helpful to us. That’s the kind of person she is.”

Shea, 43, has had a solid 17-year pro career. She’s riding an 18-fight unbeaten streak with 17 victories and one draw. The Mexican American fighter from the Bronx (NY), who now lives in Delray Beach (FL), trains and is a strength-and-conditioning coach at DS Boxing in Boca Raton, Florida.

“I’m better than ever,” Shea spoke about fighting at her age. “I have a balanced life, so why not fight? It’s not about proving myself. I have experience and I’m strong, I love this sport and I’m following the path. I’m going to give it a good run and hopefully I’ll get another world title fight. I’m at peace in my life. I’ve always stayed busy, and boxing has never left me. I started training again in 2022 and I wanted to see what would happen. It’s a challenge boxing in my forties, but there is a lot of BS. I’m doing this now for me. I started at 17 and women couldn’t fight in the amateurs. I got to No. 1 in the world. I learned a lot in the amateurs – I only had 11 fights — of what not to do in the pros. I was misdiagnosed with bi-polar and was on a lot of medication, It’s the reason I moved to California. I have seasonal affect disorder. It rejuvenated my life and off of medications. And I have a platform and a voice for young women in boxing. I started to box again, but the lapses in years that I had were from deeply emotional struggles.

“I also want to prove that life in boxing isn’t over at 40 if you age gracefully and do not lose your spirit. I’m good and getting better. People come up to me and say I must have found the Foundation of Youth. I’ve been through so much boxing that nothing affects me. I’m adaptable.”

Shea has always been a huge New York Yankees fan, often wearing the famous pinstripes while boxing, although she probably won’t be doing so fighting in the Triple A home of the Boston Red Sox.

“I’ve always loved baseball,” she added. “Mo Vaughn (former Red Sox star) is a friend of mine. I do my strength training at his performance center in Boca Raton. And when I fought in Mexico, I danced with Nomar Garciaparra (another former Red Sox star). I love baseball. When Top Rank had a show at Yankee Stadium, I really wanted to fight on that show, but now I’m fighting at a beautiful ballpark. Boston has always had great fans and I think they will appreciate my style. I have friends driving up from New York City, and others are coming from Boston and even New Hampshire. I’m excited to display my skills there. Chuck (Shearns) is a great guy. He told me he always wanted to have a women’s fight on his (Polar Park) card and I’m honored to be fighting on this show.”

Shea has fought outdoors twice, in 2007 on a show held in the parking lot outside of the Eldorado Resort Casino in Reno (NV), in which the temperatures hit 114 to go along with the high altitude. The other time was in 2011, when she defeated Diana Ayala by way of a 10-round majority decision for the WBC Interim World Featherweight title, in Los Mochis, Mexico. She clearly remembers how bitter cold it was on that December night.

Based on her past experiences, Shea shouldn’t be concerned about fighting outdoors in Worcester during August, and she also has another reason to be on “Punch-Out at Polar Park II.”

“I’m excited to be fighting on the same show with Josniel (Castro),” Maureen explained. “We’ve been stablemates for a few years, and I’ve worked out with him a lot. I don’t need to fight. What more can I achieve? I’m doing this because I still can.”

The only returning “Punch-Out” fighter from last year’s pro card, dangerous prospect Josniel “TG” Castro (12-1, 8 KOs), will take on Jerry Bradford (9-2, 5 KOs) in an eight-round match for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) U.S. Junior Middleweight title. Castro vs. Bradford was elevated to the main when the original headliner, Denzel “Double Impact” Whitley vs. Anthony “Vicious” Vieira, was postponed until a later date.

Undefeated heavyweight Kevin “Big Gulp” Nagle (8-0, 7 KOs), a popular fighter from Scituate (MA), clashes with Mexican veteran Jose “Olympico” Humberto Corral (20-33, 12 KOs) in an eight-round match.

Four-time New England Golden Gloves Champion Keno Luna (2-0, 2 KOs), a promising junior middleweight prospect from Worcester, is back in action in a four-round fight versus Izaiah Vargas (1-10).

NEW YORK — The recent announcement that Cherneka Johnson will defend her International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior featherweight title against Ellie Scotney has left the team of Maureen Shea perplexed and looking for answers.

Shea (30-2-1, 13 knockouts), rated no. 2 by the IBF, and Scotney, rated no. 1, had been ordered by the IBF on February 7 to face off in an interim title fight, which Scotney’s promoter Matchroom Boxing proposed for April 29 in Sheffield, England. Johnson suffered a major head gash during her most recent title defense against Susie Ramadan in October and was ruled unlikely to be ready to make a mandatory defense until at least June.

Shea and manager Luigi Olcese reached an agreement with Matchroom for the interim title fight. Shea’s team signed and returned the contracts to Matchroom on February 18, but the contracts were never executed by Matchroom and returned to the IBF before the deadline.

Now Shea is seeking justice after being pushed aside for a title opportunity that she has waited a long time for.

“This is bad for every female boxer out there. The IBF needs to step in. Matchroom did not negotiate in good faith or intend to make this fight. Matchroom’s economics should not dictate the opportunities to the sanctioning bodies,” said Shea, a native of The Bronx, N.Y. who now resides in Delray Beach, Fla.

As it stands, Johnson (15-1, 6 KOs) is expected to make her second defense of the belt against Scotney (6-0) on May 20 at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland. Shea, who is also half Irish, believes she should be next in line at the winner after being unfairly skipped over.

“Maureen should get an immediate shot at whoever wins this fight. We should get that in writing because we negotiated in good faith. We could have moved in a different direction but we didn’t. We passed over an opportunity to stay busy for this,” said Olcese. “This is bigger than Maureen Shea because it happened to her in this instance, but it’s happening to other females as well.”

Shea, a pioneer of the sport, is a former WBC interim featherweight champion who has been unbeaten for the past 14 years.

She last fought in May of 2022, outpointing veteran Calista Salgado in Queens, N.Y.

Queens, New York (May 9, 2022) – With the opening bell, and the first punch thrown, professional boxing officially made its emphatic debut at Carnesecca Arena at St. John’s University Saturday night at “Borough Boxing.”

The main event saw DANNY “EL GALLO” GONZALEZ (now 20-4-1 7KO’s) go to war with PAULO GALDINO (now 12-5 8KO’s) in the welterweight main event. Gonzalez, stepped on the gas early, dropping Galdino in the first round after a flurry of punches had Galdino on unsteady legs. Gonzalez looked to close the show, but Galdino was able to survive the round. Thrilling action continued the entire bout as the southpaw Galdino began putting punches together. Gonzalez would pick his spots with exciting bursts to return the favor, and both warriors continued to trade at will to the delight of the fans in a back & forth memorable battle that saw impressive and brutal body work by both fighters. At the final bell the scorecard reflected the back-and-forth action in the ring. Galdino was given a razor thin 8 rd. split decision upsetting Gonzalez in his backyard.

Result: Galdino wins via split decision (76-75 Gonzalez, 77-74 Galdino, 76-75 Galdino)

In the co-feature, MAUREEN “THE REAL MILLION DOLLAR BABY” SHEA (now 30-2-1 13KO’s) proved she is a force to be reckoned with at super bantamweight as she put on a show with fellow warrior CALISTA “CALI” SILGADO (now 19-14-1 13KO’s). Silgado showed remarkable resolve, willingly trading punches and crisp body shots with the heavy-handed Shea. However, it would be Shea’s superior boxing ability that would prove the difference in the fight. Shea won the fight via an impressive unanimous decision and is poised to make a title run at 118-122 lbs.

Result: Shea wins via unanimous decision (79-73, 79-73, 77-75).

The undercard similarly thrilled fans. Bronx based, “The Nigerian Nightmare” AFUNWA KING (now 4-1 1KO) won the battle of the boroughs besting Brooklyn born and raised, KAMRON HUMPHREY (now 3-1 2KO’s). King took the fight to Humphrey, scoring a knockdown in the second round. King controlled the action for much of the fight, keeping Humphrey on his heels.

Result: King wins via unanimous decision.

Glendale, Queens’ MAT “THE FUTURE” CASTRO (now 3-0 2KO’s) excited his hometown fans, dropping the game ANGELO THOMPSON (now 0-3) in the second round of their 4-round super welterweight fight. Thompson would gut it out, get back to his feet and kept Castro on his toes, but it would not be enough as Castro’s firepower and boxing skills made the difference.

Result: Castro wins via unanimous decision. (39-36, 39-36, 38-37)

In the opening bout of the night, NYPD Officer, EMMANUEL ETIENNE (now 2-0 1KO) defeated Elizabeth, New Jersey’s TUNDE FATIREGUN (now 0-2). The first two rounds had great action as both fighters mixed it up to the body the head. In the third, a tired Fatiregun would be deducted a point on two separate occasions for pressing down on the head of, and holding Etienne. Finally, the referee called the fight off for the same reason.

Result: Etienne wins by DQ in the fourth round.

Queens, New York (April 28, 2022) – On Saturday, May 7th at St John’s Carnesecca Arena in Queens, New York, Hilary Swank sparring partner and familiar Bronx born face will make her ring walk in the borough’s of New York for the first time in over a decade. Well known, former two-time World Champion, MAUREEN “THE REAL MILLION DOLLAR BABY” SHEA (Bronx, New York, 29-2-1 13KO’s) returns to the ring against former world championship challenger, CALISTA “CALI” SILGADO (19-13-3 14KO’s).

Maureen was born in the Bronx in 1981 and raised by her Irish father, who was an NYPD Detective, and her Mexican mother, who was in the airline industry. Her ring moniker, “The Real Million Dollar Baby” originates from her work as the main sparring partner for Hilary Swank leading up to the 2004 release of the award-winning film, “Million Dollar Baby.”

Maureen found great success when she became a professional boxer. Over her career she secured the IFBA Jr. Featherweight World, World, NABF Featherweight, NABA Featherweight and Interim WBC Featherweight Champion. In 2009 Maureen also challenged for the WBA Super Featherweight world title against Kina Malpartida at Madison Square Garden, falling short in the 10 round bout. Over the last 12 years, Maureen Shea has not lost a bout. Shea-Silgado will be an 8-round super bantamweight fight.

“My boxing roots are in NYC,” said Shea. “It has always been a goal of mine to come back to New York and fight. I have been away for 12 years, sharpening, growing and learning as a boxer and a woman. I am excited to come back to my hometown and show where my sacrifices and hard work has gotten me!”

Facing Maureen Shea is Calista Silgado who is coming off two separate world title challenges which include a decision loss to South Korea’s undefeated Hyun Mi Choi for the WBA World Female Super Featherweight Title and a decision loss to undefeated Melissa Oddessa Parker for the IBF World Female Bantamweight Title. Over her 35-fight career, the 34-year-old Silgado has challenged for a world title 8 times. With 14 of her 19 victories coming by way of KO, Silgado poses a threat for Shea with every punch.

On December 10, 2011, Shea won the WBC Interim Featherweight title with a majority decision over Diana Ayala. Shea became a two-time world champion when she won the IBA Super Bantamweight title with a 4th round stoppage over Angel Gladney on July 11, 2014.

Shea has victories over Silvia Jimenez (5-1) and Dayanna Gonzalez (4-1). Shea has won her last four and in her most recent out, Shea won a unanimous decision over Edina Kiss on October 14th in Niagara Falls, New York.

Horgasz of Budapest, Hungary has a record of 5-5 with four knockouts. The 20 year-old is a three-year professional, has faced four undefeated fighters Horgasz is coming off a six-round unanimous decision loss to undefeated Natalie Gonzalez.

In the co-feature, former welterweight contender David Estrada will take on Javier Frazier in a six-round super welterweight bout.

Estrada of Chicago has a record of 29-6-1 with 19 knockouts. Estrada, 41, will be entering is 21st year as a professional, and has faced some of the biggest names in the sport.

Estrada has wins over Matias Anibal Rios (7-0), Eric Pinero (1-0), Reggie Davis (1-0), Luke Leal (7-1), Joel Salas (10-2-1), Armando Valardez (14-1), Nurhan Suleymanoglu (14-0), Chris Smith (19-0-1), Luther Smith (22-4-2) and Orlando Lora (26-0-1). Estrada has won seven straight fight which includes his fight where he stopped Manuel Santos on two rounds on November 19, 2016 in Jalisco, Mexico.

Frazier of Aiken, South Carolina has a record of 8-12-1 with four knockouts. Frazier has a win over Kobe Wall (1-0). Frazier, who has faced nine undefeated opponents is coming off a loss to undefeated Derrick Coleman on November 2 in Louisville, Kentucky.
