INDIO, CALIF. (Mar. 21) – The April 3 FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes tripleheader is now complete, as former heavyweight world title challenger Monte “Two Gunz” Barrett returns to the ring to face unbeaten Cuban contender Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz in the main event of the highly anticipated “Night of the Heavyweights” Golden Boy Live! event at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif.

In previously announced televised heavyweight bouts, Vallejo, California’s Gerald “El Gallo Negro” Washington risks his perfect professional record in the 10-round co-main event against Houston’ Skipp “Strictly Business” Scott and 2012 U.S. Olympian Dominic “Trouble” Breazeale goes for 10 straight wins when he takes on veteran standout Nagy Aguilera.

Plus, unbeaten rising star Diego “The Golden Kid” De La Hoya will appear in a six-round junior featherweight bout and exciting prospects Santiago “El Lobito” Guevara, Neeco “The Rooster” Macias, Michael Hunter and Stephan Shaw will also be seeing action on this stacked card.

Fight fans in attendance at Fantasy Springs are in for a special treat as former heavyweight contender Gerry “Gentleman” Cooney will be on hand as a special VIP guest to meet and greet those at the event. One of the hardest punchers in heavyweight history, Cooney is best remembered for his knockout wins over Ken Norton, Ron Lyle and Jimmy Young, as well as his epic 1982 challenge for Larry Holmes’ title.

Currently ranked number two in the world by the WBA, 34-year-old southpaw Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz (20-0, 17 KOs) graduated from the legendary Cuban amateur boxing program with nearly 350 wins and numerous titles. When he turned professional in his adopted home state of Florida in 2010, he set his sights on gold of a different sort; a heavyweight world championship. Thus far, Ortiz has been unstoppable with five-of-his-last-six wins coming by way of knockout, making it clear that he will take out anyone in the way of his pursuit of a title.

Equipped with top-level heavyweight experience few can match on the current landscape, Queens, New York’s Monte Barrett (35-10-2, 20 KOs) has been in the ring with the best of the best over the course of his career, including Wladimir Klitschko, Tim Witherspoon, Hasim Rahman, David Haye and David Tua. Eager to get back in the heavyweight race, Barrett has specialized in spoiling the rise of the highly-touted, handing Dominick Guinn, Owen Beck, Eric Kirkland and Tye Fields crushing losses. He hopes to add Ortiz to that list on April 3.

An elite level prospect that has made an impression in each of his fights to date, Mexicali’s Diego “The Golden Kid” De La Hoya (3-0, 3 KOs) has shown remarkable skills and power in his knockout wins over Luis Cosme, Abraham Rubio and Sergio Najera. On April 3, the 19-year-old will meet an opponent to be named in a six-round junior featherweight bout.

One of the newest members of the Golden Boy Promotions team, Mexico-born junior lightweight Santiago “El Lobito” Guevara (6-0, 3 KOs) is a talented fighter with a bright future in the fight game. Scheduled for a six round bout on April 3, the Los Angeles resident is ready to impress fans at Fantasy Springs.

Palm Desert’s Neeco “The Rooster” Macias (3-0, 1 KO) is an action fighter who loves to scrap when the bell rings. In February, the southpaw won his third professional fight, decisioning Victor Altamirano in four rounds, the same length of his junior middleweight bout this April.

“Night of the Heavyweights” will live up to its name as the night will with two more heavyweight showdowns. In a heavyweight bout scheduled for six rounds, Van Nuys’ Michael Hunter (3-0, 3 KOs) will be seeking yet another knockout when he faces Jackson, Tennessee’s Rodrigo Ray (5-6-1, 2 KOs), and in the opener scheduled for four rounds in the heavyweight division, St. Louis’ Stephan Shaw (2-0, 2 KOs) will look for victory number three.

Opponents for De La Hoya, Guevara, Macias and Hunter will be announced shortly.

His next action is scheduled for January 22nd against Charles Davis in one of four pay-per-view fights on the “Redemption In America: The Journey Begins Now” card, headlined by living legend Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield (43-10-2, 28 KOs) defending his World Boxing Federation heavyweight title against challenger Sherman “Tank” Williams (34-11-2, 19 KOs), live from America’s resort — The Greenbrier’s Colonial Hall — in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

“Redemption In American,” presented by ARK Promotions in association with The Greenbrier, will be distributed in North American by Integrated Sports Media for live viewing at 9 PM/ET 6 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay per view via iN Demand, DIRECTV, Avail-TVN and DISH Network in the United States, as well as Viewer’s Choice and Shaw PPV in Canada, for a suggested retail price of only $29.95.

Holyfield Open Workouts Monday & Tuesday in New York City

Holyfield will hold back-to-back open workouts – media and public welcome – this coming Monday and Tuesday (Jan. 17 & 18), starting at 10 AM/ET in the Church St. Boxing Gym, 25 Park Plaza.

Barrett (34-9, 20 KOs) takes on Davis (19-21-2, 4 KOs), the former WBC Latino Heavyweight Champion, in a 10-rounder. Barrett was supposed to retire after his July 17th draw with WBO No. 2 rated David Tua, but an HBO job was put on hold due to economics. “I figured I had 3-4 good fights left in me but I was prepared to retire and work in the business side of boxing,” Monte explained, “It didn’t work out, at least for now, and I’m back doing what I do best – box! I was training with some MMA guys and it got the fire in me back, so I took the Tua fight and as a 14-1 underdog I got a draw. Does that tell you who really won that fight?

“My options are to fight Tua again. I’m 39 but with science and technology, being 39 today is like 30. Boxing is a very physical sport and the modern wonders of technology have helped boxers the most of all. We just don’t eat anything like Ali did in his day. There are strict diets and supplements. We’re experiencing the challenge of the body and mind. When I’m fully focused I can be my best and beat Tua. I’m going to stay busy until he mans-up and signs a contract to fight me in New Zealand. ”

The vastly experienced Barrett has defeated the likes of Greg Page, Tye Fields, Owen Beck and Dominick Guinn and fought world champions Wladimir Klitschko, Hasim Rahman for the Interim WBC title, Nikolay Valuev for the WBA World Heavyweight Championship, and David Haye.

Joining Holyfield-Williams and Barrett-Davis on PPV is World Boxing Federation Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion Travis “GW Hope” Kauffman (21-1 (16 KOs) versus 7’ 2” Julius “Towering Inferno” Long (15-14, 13 KOs) in an 8-round match, as well as an interesting opening bout between Lithuania-native Donatas Boundoravas (10-1-1, 3 KOs) and undefeated Willie Fortune (9-0, 5 KOs), of Detroit, in a 6-round bout.

Fighting on the non-PPV segment of “Redemption” is NABA Heavyweight Champion Cedric “The Bos” Boswell (32-1, 25 KOs), rated No. 19 by the WBC, defending his title against Dominique “Diamond” Alexander (19-9, 9 KOs) a 10-rounder. In what was one of the more exciting Heavyweight clashed, Monte Barrett and David Tua fought to a spirited draw in a twelve round Heavyweight bout of former Heavyweight title challeng at The Topicana Hotel and Resort in Atlantic City.

Round two heated up with both guys looking to land hard shots. In round three, Barrett got in a nice counter right and Tua started to breathe heavy from his wild attempta to end the bout with one punch. Barrett continued to stand up to the heavy assault. In the sixth, Tua began the round by landing a thudding right to the body. Barrett landed his punch over the first half of the fight with a crisp over hand right. Tua culminated the frame with a hard left hook along the ropes.

In round nine, Tua came out by landing a vicious three punch combination that had Barrett holding on. Later in the round, Tua came back to land two more explosive rights with the first coming to the body and the latter coming at the end of the round with a flush right on the face. The fight turned in round ten as Barrett started to back up Tua and landed some hard flush shits and even rocking Tua with a big over hand right. Tua rebounded nicely in round eleven as he landed a booming left hook on the ropes that would have put just about anyone down but somehow Barrett stood up to that as well another big left hook late in the round. The last round was a big round for Barrett as he took a big shot early in the round and then was thrown down to canvas by Tua and referee Randy Neumann took a point away from Tua. that lit a fire under Barrett as he landed a flush uppercut that sent Tua down the canvas for the first time in his fifty-six fight career. Tua barely made it to the finish line as Barrett jabbed his way to the bell.

Scores were 115-111 for Tua, while two other judges ruled 113-113 (same as 15rounds.com card) Tua of Auckland, NZ is now 51-3-2. Barrett of Queens, NY is now 34-9-1

Welterweight prospect Raymond “Tito” Serrano scored an eight round majority decision over Ayi Bruce in a nip and tuck battle. Serrano did well by boxing early and then the tough fighter from Ghana came on by making the tussle a dogfight and started getting through with good combinations. Serrano may have sealed the fight with a good eighth round as he landed some good combinations on the ropes. Serrano, 145 lbs of Philadelphia won by scores of 77-76, 78-74 and 76-76 to remain undefeated at 13-0. Bruce, 144 lbs of Accra, Ghana is now 6-3.

In a big upset, perennial spoiler Carlos Vinan scored an eighth round stoppage over IBF #2 Lightweight, Anthony Mezaache in the final round of their Lightweight bout. Mezaache controlled the action by jabbing and moving asnd built ip a lead on the cards. Vinan came out top start round eight like a house of fire and was all over Mezaache and dropped with a furious combination. Vinan ended the fight by jumping on Mezaache and his corner threw in the yowel at thity-seven seconds of round eight. Vinan of Newark, Nj is now 10-8-4 with two knockouts. Mezaache of Clichy, France is now 18-6-3.

In a bit of a upset, undefeated Bayan Jargal had to settle for an eight round draw with James Hope in a Jr. Welterweight bout. Hope landed the cleaner blows while Jargal tried to box more until the later round where he rushed in more and by agression may have won rounds to earn the dubious draw that was scored 76-76 on all cards. Jargal, 138 lbs of Arlinton, VA is now 15-0-3. Hope, 137 1/2 lbs of Rock Hill,SC is now 6-5-1.

In a wild slugfest, Khedafi Djelkhir scored a first round stoppage over Jorge Cordero in a Featherweight bout scheduled for six round. Djekhir dropped Cordero early in the first from a big left hand. Just as soon as Djelkhir thought he had it in the bag, Crodero landed a huge right hook dropped Djelkhir. Djelkhir gathered himself to land a huge right that dropped Cordero into the bottom rope. Cordero got to his fight but stumbled all over the place which prompted the referee to stop the fight at 2:20 0f round one. Djelkhir, 126 lbs of Besancon, France is now 7-0 with six knockouts. Cordero, 126 lbs of San Juan, Pr is now 4-3.

Jason Escalera scored a stoppage over Amador Acevedo at the end of round three in a scheduled six round Light Heavyweight bout. Escalera controlled the action over the first three rounds especially working the body of Acevedo. Acevedo put up one last stand in the third but Escalera’s offense was too much as Acevedo failed to answer the bell for round. Escalera, 173 lbs of Union City, NJ is now 9-0 with eight knockouts. Acevedo, 177 lbs of Moca, Puerto Rico is 3-8-1

Young Prospect Mike Perez scored an explosive first round stoppage over Jorge Ruiz in Lightweight bout schedule for six rounds. Midway through the round Perez dropped Ruiz with a left to the body. Ruiz got to his feet at the count of eight only to each a big right that was followed by a massive left hook. Referee David Francioci began to count but stopped at six as Ruiz had no shot to beat the count. The time was 2:29 of round one for Perez, 135 lbs of Jersey City, NJ and is now 9-0 with four knockouts. Ruiz, 137 lbs of Miami is now 7-13-1.
