LONG BEACH, CA (September 23, 2024) – This past Saturday, September 21, 2024, on CBN Promotions’ “New Blood” card, Nelson Oliva (12-0, 4 KOs), from Los Angeles, CA, defeated Alfonso Olvera (13-9-3, 5 KOs), from Tucson, Arizona, by unanimous decision in the 8-round super welterweight main event. The event took place at Thunder Studios in Long Beach, California and was shown live on FOX Deportes, Fubo Sports, Stadium TV, Gray Television and be available on tape delay on Estrella TV.

Nelson Oliva came out strong early on, while Olvera gained momentum during the middle rounds. The fight was close going into the final rounds, however, Oliva regained control in the later rounds, landing the more significant power shots to close out the fight. The judges scored the bout 78-74 twice and 79-75 in favor of Oliva, earning him a unanimous decision victory.

“I got the win against a very experienced and tricky veteran,” said Oliva. “I know I still have a lot to learn, and this fight taught me a lot. It was a blessing to headline the main event, and I’ll be ready when my name gets called again. I’m hoping to fight one more time before the year ends.”

In the 6-round super bantamweight co-main event, Hector Lopez (6-0, 4 KOs), from Compton, California defeated Noah Contreras (9-1, 4 KOs), from Fort Mohave, Arizona by majority decision. Lopez edged Contreras in most of the rounds by landing more punches and cleaner shots. Scorecards read 58-56, 60-54 and 57-57.

“I was confident from the start that I would come out on top in this fight,” said Lopez. “I believe I won every round and definitely hurt him a few times. It was a tough challenge, but I did what was needed to secure the victory. With a few more wins under my belt, I’m confident I’ll be ready to compete at the next level.”

UNDERCARD BOUTS:

Lightweight Eric Mondragon (11-1-1, 4 KOs), from Maywood, CA, defeated Jose Valenzuela Alvarado (3-16-1, 2 KOs), from Puebla, Mexico by unanimous decision in a scheduled 6-round bout. Scorecards read 58-56 and 59-55 twice.

Light Flyweight Terry Washington (1-0, 1 KO), from San Bernardino, California, defeated Ezequiel Robles (1-2), from Nayarit, Mexico by first round knockout in a scheduled 4-round bout. Washington landed a devastating three punch combo that ended with an uppercut. After Robles couldn’t continue, the bout was stopped at the 1:55 mark of the opening round.

Middleweight Blazen Rocili (7-0, 6 KOs), from Las Vegas, NV, defeated Selim Martinez Gonzalez (6-8, 2 KOs), from Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, by KO in a scheduled 6-round bout. Gonzalez didn’t make it out of his corner after round two.

Kenario Davidson (1-0), from Montgomery, Alabama, defeated Gurjant Singh (2-1, 1 KO), Delhi, India, in a 4-round super bantamweight bout. Davidson making his professional debut, dropped Singh in round three and won by unanimous decision. Scorecards read 38-37 twice and 39-36.

Thompson boxing ended it’s 23-year round with an entertaining five bout card that was headlined by Louie Lopez stopping Benjamin Lamptey in round three of their eight-round junior middleweight bout at the Doubletree in Ontario, California.

In round three, Lopez dropped Lamptey with a series of body shots. Seconds later, it was more body work that put Lamptey down for the 10-count at 1:22.

Lopez, 149.2 lbs of Corona, CA is 14-2-1 with five knockouts. Lamptey, 152.7 lbs of Accra, GHA falls to 13-12-2.

George Acosta stopped Edy Valencia Mercado after round five of their six-round junior lightweight bout.

At the end of round four, Acosta dropped Mercado with a right. Mercado quit on his stool after round five.

Acosta, 130.5 lbs of Whittier, CA is 16-1 with three knockouts. Mercado, 130.8 lbs of Culican, MEX is 20-12-2.

Nelson Oliva stopped Jeremaine Chico Whittington in round two of their four-round super middleweight fight.

In round two, Oliva landed a right hook that made Whittington take a knee. Seconds later, it was another right hook that put Whittington down again. Finally it was a left to body that put Whittington down for a third time and the fight was stopped at 1:57.

Oliva, 166.2 lbs of Los Angeles is 8-0 with seven knockouts. Whittington, 165.3 lbs of San Antonio, TX is 2-2.

Kevin Salgado stopped Iziah Vargas in the opening round of their four-round welterweight fight.

Salgado dropped Vargas with a body shot in the opening frame. Salgado scored another knockdown and the fight was stopped at 2:08.

Salgado, 144 lbs of Murrieta, CA is 3-1 with one knockout. Vargas is 1-7.

Esteban Munoz won a six-round unanimous decision over Nelson Morales in a welterweight bout.

Munoz, 142.4 lbs of San Bernadino, CA won by scores of 60-54 twice and 59-55 and is now 7-3. Morales, 144.4 lbs of Scranton, PA is 4-8.

This was Thompson Boxing Promotions final show. On his recent training camp:

“I love the grind. I work hard all-day, and I train harder at night. This camp has been about staying focused on my goal and appreciating the journey through the ranks of the sport. One day I will look back and say ‘man, these were the days’. I live for moments like this and I’m thankful to my team for always having my back. It’s been a nice camp and my trainer Henry Ramierz has me in great shape with good plan in place.”

On his matchup with Wayne Boudreaux:

“He is a good fighter, a good amateur, but he got stopped in Olympic Trials to a good puncher and I know I am a good puncher as well. I think he is talented, but he is also flawed. I don’t have the pedigree, but I believe I have more desire, will, and focus. I want this more than him, and I believe when I hit him, he will slowly stop fighting back.”

On what a win will do for his career:

“The goal is to get into bigger and better fights. Not many fighters would take this fight at this point in their career, but I want to be great. The goal is to improve, constantly get better, and take on opponents who are no worse than my last opponent.”

Former world title challenger Ruben Villa returned from a 16-month layoff to look impressive in stopping Horacio Garcia in round nine of their 10-round featherweight bout at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California.

In round one, Garcia was cut over his left eye. Villa looked sharp in landing crisp three and four-punch combinations for which Garcia had no answer for. Villa did not look like he took any time off as he continued to break down and bloody Garcia more and more as the rounds went by.

Finally in round nine, Villa landed hard combinations that forced referee Raul Caiz Jr. to stop the bout at 1:12.

Villa, 126.4 lbs of Salinas, CA is now 19-1 with six knockouts. Garcia, 126.8 lbs of Guadalajara, MEX is 35-6-1.

In a rematch, Richard Brewart Jr. won a six-round unanimous decision over Antonio Duarte.

Brewart, 161.3 lbs of Rancho Cucamonga, CA won by scores of 60-54 on all cards and is now 11-0. Duarte, 161 lbs of Tijuana, MEX is 2-3.

This was a rematch of June 14, 2019 bout at the same venue where Brewart won by similar scores of 60-54 twice and 59-55.

Pedro Valencia shook off a first-round knockdown to win a six-round unanimous decision over Edgar Palacios in a battle of undefeated lightweights

In round one, Palacios dropped Valencia with a big straight left. Valencia was able to battle back and dominate the final two rounds and win by scores of 57-56 on all cards.

Valencia, 137.8 lbs of Pocoima, CA is 9-0. Palacios, 136.6 lbs of La Paz, MEX is 3-1.

Esteban Munoz stopped Kenny Williams after round three of their six-round welterweight bout.

In round three, Munoz and Williams clashed heads and Williams started to bleed around the right eye. In between rounds, the fight was halted by the corner.

Munoz, 145 lbs of San Bernardino, CA is 6-1 with three knockouts. Williams, 148.1 lbs of San Antonio, TX is 4-7-1.

Nelson Oliva stopped Manuel Martinez in the opening round of their four-round super welterweight bout.

In round one, Oliva dropped Martinez with a left hand. Seconds later, it was another left hand that sent Martinez down for second time and the fight was stopped at 1:42,

Oliva, 157 lbs of Riverside, CA is 2-0 with two knockouts. Martinez, 158 lbs of Tijuana, MEX is 6-6-4.

Alejandro Barajas made a successful pro debut with a four-round unanimous decision over Ulises Rosales in a bantamweight fight.
