In round 11, Lomachenko landed a hard left to the head while Kambosos was bending down that put Kambosos on the canvas. Kambosos was clearly done, and Lomachenko ended the fight by landed a crushing left to the body that put Kambosos down again and the fight was stopped just as the towel was being thrown in from Kambosos corner at 2:49.

Lomachenko is a champion again with a record of 18-3 with 12 knockouts. Kambosos falls to 21-3.

Lomachenko said, “It looked like a knockout today, not ‘No-Mas-Chenko.’ But, you know, we trained hard for this moment. I want to thank my opponent. He is a strong man and a true warrior.

“My plan was to adjust to my opponent. This is what I did during the fight. I knew I needed to finish strong. And in the last three rounds, I was trying to find his body.

I never ran around during my boxing career. I always take fights. Right now, I want to come back to my home, spend time with my family, and after I rest a little bit, we can talk about my future.”

Kambosos said, “He’s a true champion. He’s a legend of the sport. I give him the utmost respect. We knew what we are coming up against, and I tried my best. But it wasn’t enough today.

He’s one of the best fighters in history. So, I’m not ashamed. I wanted to finish the fight on my feet. I wanted to finish the rounds like I always do. But there’s no shame in losing to a man like Lomachenko.”

DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT INKS PROMOTIONAL AGREEMENT WITH WBA WORLD CHAMPION, AND INSPIRATIONAL FIGHTING MOM, NINA HUGHES

NEW YORK (January 29, 2024) DiBella Entertainment has expanded its impressive stable of female bantamweights with the signing of undefeated WBA Bantamweight World Champion Nina Hughes. Hughes, who hails from Billericay, Essex, England, was the fastest ever British professional boxer to win a world title when she captured the WBA strap in just her fifth fight.

In November 2022, at 40 years old, Hughes, now 6-0 (2 KOs), took a chance, and traveled to Dubai to face the previously undefeated Jamie Mitchell, 9-1-2 (5 KOs).

“People dismissed me because of my age,” said Hughes. “They laughed at me.”

Hughes was undeterred. Using a consistent jab and getting the better of the exchanges, she won a 10-round unanimous decision against Mitchell, cementing her status as the WBA champion at 118 pounds.

The doubters didn’t consider her extensive and successful amateur career, one that began at 25 years old when she stepped foot into Chadwell St. Mary Amateur Boxing Club in Essex. She had stopped in for a boxercise class, with the intention of getting in shape. She so enjoyed it that her coach convinced her to try one amateur fight. She won her fight and was hooked.

She would go on to travel the world, representing her home country in numerous international tournaments, engaging in more than 70 amateur fights. It was a career that would be put on hold after a heartbreaking loss to Nicola Adams in the 2012 Olympic trials.

Hughes took some time off to start a family. Now a single mother of two sons, she relishes the opportunity to show them how hard work and dedication can pay off.

“My oldest son, Leo, carries the belt to the ring with me,” said Hughes. “He would carry the Commonwealth title I won in my third fight and now he carries my WBA belt.”

Her younger son is still getting acquainted with the sweet science but sometimes accompanies his mother to the gym. Both boys look up to their mom and she fights for them.

“My kids push me,” said Hughes. “I want to succeed for them. I want them to see me keep winning, and see the determination that pushes me on. I promise them a trip to the toy shop every time I win, so I can’t be losing.”

After her first son was born, Hughes returned to boxing to get back into shape post-pregnancy. To help give her extra motivation, she planned to fight in one more amateur bout. However, she wouldn’t stop at just one, competing in the amateur circuit for several more years.

She made her professional debut in December 2021, winning a decision against a far more experienced professional in Klaudia Ferenczi, a veteran of 114 fights. Hughes has been trained by Kevin Lilley, out of Newlands Gym in Essex, since her pro debut. She has also recently signed with manager Leon Sudbury.

One of Hughes’ keys to success is the support around her. Working part time as a legal secretary, mostly from home, Hughes has been able to get training in during her lunch break, with the approval of her employers who traveled to Dubai to see her win her world title. Hughes’ parents also play a pivotal role in helping with her children.

On June 10, 2023, Hughes made the first defense of her WBA title, winning a near-shutout 10-round unanimous decision against Katie Healy at Wembley Arena in England.

“I’m really excited to carry on my journey with DiBella Entertainment,” said Hughes of the signing. “I can’t wait to get back in the ring. I want to become the unified world champion and then become undisputed.”

“I’m thrilled to have Nina join our stable,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “She’s a great lady, and I’m proud to promote another resilient single mom who never quit on her dream.

“This is such a stacked division, and we have several bantamweights on the DiBella roster,” DiBella continued. “We’re going to get Nina busy and fighting. There are so many good fights to make at this weight, and I’m excited to work with Nina, Leon and Kevin.”

The DiBella Entertainment stable includes some of the top talent in the women’s bantamweight division. IBF World Champion Miyo Yoshida, IBO World Champion Amanda Galle, IBF #1 mandatory contender Shurretta Metcalf, and top Australian fighter Cherneka Johnson, a former world champion, all count themselves among DiBella’s roster of talented women.

Yoshida, Metcalf and long-time DBE fighter Heather Hardy are also single mothers. Hardy fights for her daughter Annie’s college tuition, Metcalf is raising two sons, one with autism, and the world saw Yoshida share her world title victory with her

EDWARDS MEETS CAMPOS IN WORLD TITLE TRIPLE-HEADER IN LONDON

Sunny Edwards will defend his IBF World Flyweight title against Andres Campos at the OVO Arena Wembley, London on Saturday June 10 live worldwide on DAZN – and topping a blockbuster triple-header of World title action with Nina Hughes defending her WBA Bantamweight crown against Shannon Courtenay and Cherneka Johnson defending her IBF Super-Bantamweight strap against Ellie Scotney.

Edwards (19-0 4 KOs) makes his Matchroom debut in the capital having penned a promotional deal with Eddie Hearn in March, and the unbeaten Sheffield-based slickster makes his fourth defence of the IBF strap he landed in April 2021 against Moruti Mthalane in London.

‘Showtime’ is gunning for unification clashes in the second half of the year and having seen off challenges from Felix Alvarado, Muhammad Waseem and Jayson Mama, he welcomes unbeaten Chilean Campos to his homeland. Campos (15-0 4 KOs), ranked at seven in the IBF rankings, has held the WBO Latino Flyweight strap since March 2020 and the 26 year old, who has called Edwards out before, landed the 15th win of his career in January and fourth inside the distance – and now lands the World title shot he’s been craving.

“Campos has been calling for a fight with me for a couple years now since I’ve been champion which is strange to me,” said Edwards. “So, now I’m gonna cook him like sweet chilli and send him back packing with his tail between his legs, the little muppet!”

An all-British World title clash sees WBA Bantamweight ruler Hughes (5-0 2 KOs) makes the first defence of her title against former title holder Courtenay (8-2 3 KOs). Hughes landed the title in Dubai in November against Jamie Mitchell, and the late-bloomer from Essex will face a hungry Courtenay in London as the Watford star aims to regain the title she lost on the scales before dropping a majority decision to Mitchell in Liverpool in October 2021 having beaten Ebanie Bridges to win the belt in London six months earlier.

The third World title bout on the bill pits Australian IBF Super-Bantamweight champion Johnson against unbeaten Briton Scotney. Johnson (15-1 6 KOs) got her hands on the vacant title on her home patch in Melbourne 12 months ago against Melissa Esquivel and then bravely coped with a brutal cut in the second round of her first defence against fellow Aussie Susie Ramadan as they served up a classic at the Rod Laver Arena in October. Scotney (6-0) lands her first World title shot against Johnson, and the Catford star, will fight at the Wembley venue for the third time in her burgeoning career after landing the European title in her last outing in October.

There’s an action-packed undercard supporting the three World title bouts, with some of Matchroom’s brightest talents in crunch clashes.

Cruiserweight Cheavon Clarke looks to close in on a British title tilt as he faces David Jamieson in a final eliminator for the British title. Clarke (5-0 4 KOs) got vital rounds under his belt in February in Nottingham in his first ten rounder when Israel Duffus became the first fighter to take him to the final bell, and now the 32 year old meets Jamieson (10-2 7 KOs) to get into pole position for the British strap, and it would lead to a second crack at the title for Jamieson, who met current champion Mikael Lawal for the belt in November.

Youssef Khoumari and Reece Bellotti will meet in an eliminator for British Super-Featherweight title. Khoumari (15-1-1 6 KOs) performs on his doorstep in a key battle for the 26 year old to get into range for the Lord Lonsdale belt, and the Wembley talent has bagged a pair of wins since being edged out by Jorge Castaneda in October 2021.

Watford’s Bellotti got himself back into winning ways after picking up the Southern Area title last April by stopping Dean Dodge at York Hall having dropped losses to World rated Raymond Ford and Jordan Gill on Matchroom bills previously.

The ‘Romford Bull’ Johnny Fisher (8-0 7 KOs) will bring his Bull Army to Wembley for the third time as the 24 year old Heavyweight fights for the ninth time in the pros, Anthony Joshua-managed Shannon Ryan (4-0) returns to the venue of her March 2022 debut to continue her pro journey, and rising starlets George Liddard(2-0 2 KOs) and Muhammad Ali (1-0) feature on Before the Bell.

“What a night we have in store on June 10 in London,” said Hearn. “Sunny headlines in his first fight with us and with those massive unification fights on the horizon, he’ll be looking to shine against Andres, who can upset the odds in his first World title fight.

“All-British World title fights always have that extra bit of spice, and I expect Nina and Shannon to deliver fireworks, and the same applies to the battle between Cherneka and Ellie, a fight that will be high in drama and skill.

“Chev and Youssef will have their title credentials tested in important battles with David and Reece, Johnny’s incredible support will be out in force again and it’s a great platform for Shannon, George and Muhammad to strut their stuff – June 10 is another night of must-see action live on DAZN.”

Ticket details will be released soon.

WBA BANTAMWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION NINA HUGHES SIGNS WITH MATCHROOM

Newly crowned WBA Bantamweight Champion of the World Nina Hughes has signed a long-term promotional deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.

The 40-year-old from Billericay in Essex, who is trained by Kevin Lilley and managed by Lee Eaton, ripped the WBA crown from the USA’s Jamie Mitchell at the Hilton Palm Jumeirah in Dubai last month to become Britain’s latest World Champion.

A four-time ABA National Champion, the mother of two only turned professional in December 2021 at the age of 39. She landed the vacant Commonwealth and WBO International Titles in her third fight against Tysie Gallagher in July before making history against Mitchell in just her fifth fight in the paid ranks.

“It was an amazing feeling being crowned World Champion,” said Hughes. “It made all of the hard work and sacrifices over the years worthwhile. My dreams had finally become a reality.

“Hopefully it inspires girls around the world to follow their dreams and take up boxing no matter what obstacles get in the way. Not many people believed I could do it because of my age apart from my team and the people around me that know me well, so I was glad to prove everyone wrong.

“I’m really excited to be teaming up with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom. I’m looking forward to boxing on the big stage in some big exciting fights. The aim will be to win more World Titles and unify in the Bantamweight division. I want the big fights that people want to see.”

“I’m delighted to welcome another World Champion to the Matchroom stable in WBA Bantamweight champion Nina Hughes,” said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. “This is quite a remarkable story, after an impressive amateur career, Nina waited until she was 39 years old to turn professional and within 12 months captured the World Title against highly regarded Jamie Mitchell on away soil. She has now put herself in the frame for huge domestic and unification fights and we look forward to delivering what she deserves in 2023.”

“I am over the moon for Nina,” said Eaton. “Nina came into the game very late turning pro at 39 and within 12 months she’s had five pro fights, won the WBO International and Commonwealth Titles, and then gone over to Dubai and beat the current WBA World Champion very comfortably.

“When I signed Nina we always had the aim of becoming World Champion but to do it this quick is incredible. We want the big fights straight away – Shannon Courtenay or Ebanie Bridges next would be ideal. With Matchroom’s backing I believe she can go on to unify the division and even become undisputed.

“I’ve known Nina a long time as we are both from same area – it’s a mad situation! I messaged Nina about turning over in 2017 and she said she couldn’t be bothered with selling tickets! Now five years later she’s World Champion within 12 months which is a very proud moment for me as her manager and friend.”

Nina Hughes vs. Bec Connolly rescheduled for April MTK Fight Night

Nina Hughes and Bec Connolly will finally be able to get it on when they clash on the upcoming #MTKFightNight at York Hall in London on April 15th.
The two female fighters will go head to head on the undercard of the British and Commonwealth lightweight title fight between Gavin Gwynne and Luke Willis, which will be broadcast live in the US on ESPN+ in association with Top Rank, and worldwide on IFL TV.

Hughes and Connolly were originally set to meet on February 11th, before Connolly pulled out of the fight with COVID. After some back and forth comments from each fighter on social media regarding the cancellation, they now get to settle their differences on the rescheduled date.

Hughes said: “I’m really pleased that it’s been rescheduled, and I’m just hoping it goes ahead this time. I had a hard eight-week training camp for the fight previously, so I feel like I need to put this fight to bed, come out victorious and move on to get closer to boxing for titles.

“I had a week off, got over the frustration and was straight back in the gym sparring Terri Harper for her upcoming fight so I had the motivation to get focused again.

“I’m professional, and this is business so I wouldn’t allow it to get personal no matter what the circumstances are, but fans can expect to see an explosive fight from the first bell.”

Connolly said: “I’m really pleased this fight is back on. I was already looking forward to it as it’s a decent scrap, but now I’m looking forward to it even more. I was annoyed to get COVID, and I had a really banging headache and felt sick, but it went pretty quickly.

“I’m definitely going to bring some extra fire to the fight now. I said there were no hard feelings but I’ve got the motivation to make this the best camp ever. You’ll see the best Bec Connolly there has ever been.

“I was really enjoying training because I’ve got a new coach, but I’ve got the fire in my belly for this even more now. I’m super excited, and I even turned down a fight in the interim just because I want to give this my full attention.”

Further news on the April 15th MTK Fight Night event, including more fight announcements, will be revealed in the coming days.

Bec Connolly: I’ll beat Nina Hughes, then I want Shannon Courtenay!

Bec Connolly has a clear plan in mind ahead of her return to the ring on Friday’s #MTKFightNight – defeat Nina Hughes this week, and then take on former world champion Shannon Courtenay next.
Connolly (3-11) faces Hughes (1-0) as part of the stacked card headlined by Danny Dignum’s WBO European middleweight title defence at York Hall in London this week, which will be broadcast live in the US on ESPN+ in association with Top Rank, and worldwide on IFL TV.

Despite being the underdog, Connolly plans on upsetting the odds against Hughes, and then hopes to secure a fight with recent WBA bantamweight champion Courtenay.

Connolly said: “I’m really looking forward to this fight. I’ve known of Nina Hughes for a while. She was a good fighter for Team GB and everybody spoke highly of her, but I’m coming to win.

“Nina has a good pedigree and experience from fighting for Team GB that you don’t get in the backyard gyms that I’ve been in, but I’ll just crack on and give everything like I always do.

“I never use my life story to try and make excuses for past losses, but when stuff outside the ring is going on, it obviously affects your performance. For this fight I’ve had a solid six week camp and I’m ready.

“A win this Friday at York Hall would be great, and then I’m willing to take any fight, especially the Shannon Courtenay one, I would love that fight next.

“As females go, I’m the last of the old guard and I’m the gatekeeper to the top ranks in the professionals. I’ve earned that respect and place and people have to go through me, but Shannon Courtenay didn’t fight me.”

Elsewhere on Friday’s card, undefeated sensation Lee McGregor returns against Diego Alberto Ruiz, Bilal Fawaz makes his professional debut against Vladimir Fleischhauer, Joe Giles meets Lewis van Poetsch, plus Jordan Flynn, Paul Ryan and George Mitchell are all in action.

Nina Hughes targeting titles in the near future

Nina Hughes is all set for her second professional contest when she takes on Bec Connolly on Friday’s #MTKFightNight – and the female sensation wants to move at a rapid speed as she looks to target titles in the near future.
Hughes (1-0) meets Connolly (3-11) as part of the stacked card headlined by Danny Dignum’s WBO European middleweight title defence at York Hall in London this week, which will be broadcast live in the US on ESPN+ in association with Top Rank, and worldwide on IFL TV.

Hughes brought a stellar amateur career into the paid ranks when she made a successful debut in December, and she believes that experience can help her challenge for titles sooner rather than later.

Hughes said: “I’m excited to go out again on such a big card, especially after my debut which couldn’t have gone any better.

“I really enjoyed my debut. I was a bit nervous about boxing without a head guard for the first time, but once I was in there it was fine. After boxing amateur for so long I never thought I’d turn professional, but with all the success recently I thought I can’t not give this a go.

“I boxed for Team GB and won seven national titles, and now this is the next step for me. I’ve had some good feedback so that is definitely encouraging to hear those nice comments, and I believe with the right opportunity I can win titles.

“This is an exciting division to be in at the moment, and I’ll hopefully get the big fights soon. I want to be moved as quickly as possible, and I think my amateur pedigree puts me in good stead.

“It’s Bec Connolly next, and I won’t back down from anybody. Whoever they put in front of me I will fight, and I trust my team to put me on the right path.”

Elsewhere on Friday’s card, undefeated sensation Lee McGregor returns against Diego Alberto Ruiz, Bilal Fawaz makes his professional debut against Vladimir Fleischhauer, Joe Giles meets Lewis van Poetsch, plus Jordan Flynn, Paul Ryan and George Mitchell are all in action.
