Undefeated junior middleweight prospect Nisa “Sweet-Destruction” Rodriguez Fighting this Saturday on a Pro-Am Card along with her son in Riverhead, NY

NEW YORK CITY (April 23, 2025) – Undefeated junior middleweight prospect Nisa “Sweet-Destruction” Rodriguez (4-0, 2 KOs), rated No. 4 in the world by the World Boxing Association (WBA), will be fighting this Saturday night on a Pro-Am card, launching “The Riverhead Fight Series” at Suffolk Theater in Riverhead, New York.

A fulltime New York Police officer, Rodriguez’ 15-year-old son, Emerson, is slated to box on the same card, and they are believed to be the first professional boxer mother and amateur boxing son to fight on the same event in U.S. boxing.

“We’re both excited to be fighting on the same show,” Nisa said. “He’s always been there, walking me out to fights, at the gym and when I won my first National Golden Gloves title. When I was a single parent, I had to take him with me. Now, he’s 15 with a 10-2 amateur record. He’s 6’ 1”, 145-pounds…like Tommy Hearns, who is his favorite fighter.

“I think fighting together is kind of dope. I want him to finish school and he’s an honor student. We’ll see what happens. As much as he wants to fight, it’s a big gamble being a fighter., He understands; he saw me beat up in the hospital. It takes a lot of dedication. I’ve seen a lot of father-son relationships in boxing cause problems, so we don’t talk about boxing when we’re in our house.”

The first installment of this new boxing series is being presented by Boxing Insider Promotions, in association with Hill Street Boxing, and will be streamed live from Suffolk Theater, hosting its first boxing event since it opened in 1912, on www.boxinginsider.com.

Rodriguez, who will be fighting as a pro for the first at her natural boxing weight class, faces German junior middleweight Deborah Melhorn, who will be making her pro boxing debut, albeit she’s fought professionally in bare knuckles and kickboxing.

The main event is a scheduled eight round super lightweight bout between local favorite Terell Bostic (15-2, 2 KOs) and Francisco Javier Grande (7-4-2), of Mexico. Virginia super lightweight Ameil Barbour (2-1, 1 KO) faces Enock Melson (0-1), of Maryland, in a four rounder. There will be three pro fights and between 8-10 amateur matches. Card subject to change.

“I’m so grateful to be fighting on this card with the opportunity to have my son fighting on the same show,” Rodriguez concluded.

Rodriguez is an eight-time New York Daily News Golden Gloves, six-time Metro Championships, two-time Empire State, and Caribbean and Central Americano gold medalist. A former schoolteacher, Rodriguez has been a NYC police officer for two years, stationed citywide for the rapid response unit, specializing in any crimes that involve adolescents and supporting families of homicides. In addition to being a fulltime police officer and pro boxer, if that were not enough, Nisa works with youths in a program at Cops & Kids Gym in Brooklyn, and she’s married with three children.

“It will be exciting to see Nisa and her son warming up in the locker room knowing they’ll be sharing the card together,” Nisa’s manager Keith Sullivan remarked. “It is really something special and a lifelong memory for them to share on this historic occasion. I just hope they both win, otherwise the bragging rights at home could be brutal!”

“Nisa is a true pro and a very nice person,” Hill Street Boxing spokesperson Marty Hopwood commented. “The first boxing event at The Suffolk in its 113-year history provides an historic element that’s important to boxing.”

Hopwood, a lawyer, has been involved in boxing since he attended Boston College. He trained to stay in shape with the famed Archer brothers, Joey and Jimmy, at the New York Athletic Club. Hopwood returned to the gym eight years ago to get into boxing shape. Two years ago, he fought as an amateur for the first time, fighting seven times in the last 14 months in the Senior Division, and he’s still throwing leather at the age of 74.

Tickets are priced at $75.00 and $300.00 and available to purchase online at https://thesuffolk.org/event/riverhead-fight-series-1/, as well as fight night at the door.

The amateur portion of the event starts at 7 pm ET, followed by the three pro fights.

Sullivan, a boxing lawyer as well as a former Deputy Commissioner for the NYS Athletic Commission, also manages 3-time, 2-division world champion Miyo Yoshida (18-5), undefeated Brooklyn heavyweight prospect Pryce Taylor (7-0, 5 KOs), in addition to co-managing world-rated (IBF #3 & WBA #10) welterweight contender Paddy “The Real Deal” Donovan (14-1, 11 KOs), from Limerick, Ireland. Sullivan co-manages Donovan with former world middleweight champion Andy Lee, who is also Donovan’s head trainer.

Undefeated middleweight prospect Nisa “Sweet-Destruction” Rodriguez Plans to fight for a title in 2025

NEW YORK CITY (December 30, 2024) – Undefeated middleweight prospect Nisa “Self-Destruction” Rodriguez (3-0, 1 KO), coming off her first knockout as a professional boxer, has her sights on her first title-winning performance in 2025.

Rated No. 9 by the World Boxing Council (WBC), promotional free agent Rodriguez is coming off an impressive performance December 17 at Sony Hall in Times Square, on a Boxing Insider Promotions card. The 34-year-old NYPD officer, who fights out of Manhattan, was in her first scheduled six-round fight, although she stopped her opponent, Melody Popravak (2-2-1, 1 KO), in round two.

“I never go into a fight looking for a knockout,” Nisa explained, “because it won’t happen. I was thrown off a little when I saw an opening late in the opening round, but I went right after that opening to start the second round. It was my first scheduled six-rounder, so I wanted to have my gas tank filled. It was a good performance. In my first two pro fights, I showed I could box, and in this fight, I was a slugger like I’ve always been.”

Because of a European vacation commitment, Rodriguez trained in Paris for a week, returning home a week prior to her fight, which wasn’t finalized until long after her family vacation plans were booked.

“The gyms in Paris aren’t as nice as in New York City,” Rodriguez said, “but are decent. I wanted to visit Rome, but I didn’t want to fly there and decided to stay in Paris to train. I came home a week before my fight to get acclimated. I learned how to do that in my amateur days and took advantage of that.”

Rodriguez, rated No. 9 in the world by the World Boxing Council (WBC), hopes to make up for lost time in 2025. It’s been difficult matching Nisa because of her amateur pedigree, compounded by limited opponents in her weight class.

“In 2025,” she concluded, “I want to establish the steps to obtain a title. I’ve been eying that no matter what group (sanctioning body) it’s for. I’d also like to fight more than three times next year – whatever my job allows for – maybe five or six times.”

Nisa’s next fight is scheduled for February 1st at Prudential Center in Newark (NJ) vs. TBA.

“I have always had the belief that with the right movement, Nisa can fight for a world title,” her manager Keith Sullivan commented. “She is moving at a good pace with three fights in nine months. A few more fights and I am confident she will be in a world title match. It is exciting and inspiring to watch this mother of three, who is an NYPD police officer and serves as the de facto godmother to so many kids in the gym, lead this double career as a professional boxer. I am excited for 2025.”

Sullivan, a boxing lawyer as well as a former Deputy Commissioner for the NYS Athletic Commission, also manages 3-time, 2-division world champion Miyo Yoshida (17-5), undefeated Brooklyn heavyweight prospect Pryce Taylor (5-0, 3 KOs), in addition to co-managing world-rated (WBA #5, IBF #6 & WBC #14) welterweight contender Paddy “The Real Deal” Donovan (14-0, 11 KOs), the reigning WBA Continental Champion from Limerick, Ireland. Sullivan co-manages Donovan with former world middleweight champion Andy Lee, who is also Donovan’s head trainer.

Nisa Rodriguez to return to ring Dec. 17th on “Holiday Fight Night 3” at Sony Hall in Times Square

NEW YORK CITY (November 25, 2024) – Little did New York City middleweight Nisa Rodriguez (2-0) know when she booked a European vacation for her family that it would be one week prior to her return to the ring.

Rated No. 9 by the World Boxing Council (WBC), promotional free agent Rodriguez will fight in her first scheduled six-round match against Melody Popravak (2-1-1, 1 KO) on Tuesday, December 17, at Sony Hall in Times Square, on a show presented by Boxing Insider Promotions.

It’s been difficult for Rodriguez’ manager, NYC-based lawyer Keith Sullivan, to secure opponents for Nisa, largely because of her rich amateur pedigree, as well as her weight class limitations in terms of quality opponents. In fact, she had to fight at super middleweight in her two pro fights to date, although she will take on middleweight Popravak next month, in her natural weight class.

Nisa is also an eight-time New York Daily News Golden Gloves, six-time Metro Championships, two-time Empire State, and Caribbean and Central Americano gold medalist.

Because of the aforementioned difficulties finding time to book a family vacation and figuring she wouldn’t fight again in 2024; Nisa booked a trip to Europe only to shortly find-out that she had an offer to fight at home on Dec. 17. Rather than cancel her vacation and attempt to find another time she and her family could go away together, they’re all heading overseas and just like she does in the ring, Nisa will properly adjust to the situation.

“I was hoping to fight again this year,” she explained, “and I kept pushing our vacation off. I had nothing (fights) in December and my birthday will be while we’re away. We’re a humble family, saved up, and we are still going to Europe. So, I’ll get in my roadwork in Paris, and my husband (Wilson Hernandez) and son (Emerson Pina) will be my technical sparring partners. My husband fights in the Master’s Division and we’re about the same weight. My son is a good amateur boxer, only 15, but he’s strong, 6’ 1” and 145 pounds. I’m not his coach, though. We have a parent-child dynamic, and unless he asks for boxing advice from me, I don’t offer any.

“From being a member of the Puerto Rico Team in the amateurs, I know some fighters over there (in Europe), and I will have gyms to train at and spar in. Most of the week we’ll be in Paris, but we’re going to try and go to Rome, too. I really want to see The Colosseum because boxers are like modern-day gladiators.”

Her manager Keith Sullivan added: “I was prepared to take her out of the fight, but she said, ‘No, I’ll stay in shape. We’re a boxing family; my son and husband will spar, work the mitts and help keep my conditioning on point.’ “Nisa excels at everything she does, so I backed down and contracted to go forward with the fight. I would never agree to this for any fighter not named Nisa Rodriguez.”

Rodriguez is happy to finally be fighting as a middleweight and unconcerned about the two additional rounds for her first scheduled six-round bout.

“I feel that the time fighting as an elite amateur prepared me because we fought four 2-minute rounds, the same in the pros, but I always trained hard and felt I could have fought longer,” Rodriguez noted. “Two-minute rounds go really fast. I like to counterpunch and move around the ring, but now I can sit down more to punch because of the two extra rounds from what I’ve been accustomed to. I’m happy to be fighting as a middleweight, but I always try to come in light anyway.”

Tickets are on sale and may be purchased online at https://www.ticketweb.com/event/boxing-insider-fight-night-sony-hall-tickets/14011593.

Sullivan also manages 3-time, 2-division world champion Miyo Yoshida (17-5), undefeated Brooklyn heavyweight prospect Pryce Taylor (4-0, 2 KOs), in addition to co-managing world-rated (IBF & WBA #6, WBC #14) welterweight contender Paddy “The Real Deal” Donovan (14-0, 11 KOs), the reigning WBA Continental Champion from Limerick, Ireland. Sullivan co-manages Donovan with former world middleweight champion Andy Lee, who is also Donovan’s head trainer.

Nisa Rodriguez to be showcased on Puerto Rican Day at MSG

NEW YORK CITY (June 3, 2024) – New York City police officer and celebrated amateur boxer, Nisa Rodriguez (1-0, 0 KOs), is excited to be boxing on National Puerto Rican Day this Saturday at home in Madison Square Garden Theater.

Rodriguez, 33, faces Jordanne Garcia (4-3, 3 KOs), of Albuquerque (NM), in a four-round bout on a Top Rank card, headlined by Xander Zayas vs. Patrick Teixera, and Nisa’s fight will be streamed live on ESPN2.

An eight-time New York Daily News Golden Gloves Champion, as well as a six-time Metro Championships winner and two-time Empire State and Caribbean and Central Americano gold medalist, Rodriguez is equally thrilled to be fighting in her “house.”

“For me,” Rodríguez said, “Puerto Rican Day (in NYC) goes back to Miguel Cotto, who was my guy. First, he was a brawler, then a boxer, and he had Puerto Rican pride. Even “’Tito’ (Felix Trinidad), I was young (when ‘Tito’ fought in NYC on Puerto Rican Day), maybe 15 or 16, and I didn’t start boxing in the Golden Gloves until I was 17. Then it was my era. I grew up with so many Puerto Rican fighters. I knew Juan LaPorte, but I really didn’t know him until I was older. And I remember Amanda Serrano fighting on Puerto Rican Day.

“I fought on one big card, the 360 Promotions show, and now I’m on a Top Rank card. Top Rank is a household name and I’m fighting once again at Madison Square Garden. Boxing is small and I’m fortunate to be fighting on this card.”

Rodriguez, of course, is juggling her career as a police officer and professional boxer. Because of her time restrictions, Nisa’s manager, Keith Sullivan, and head trainer Jimmy Sosa break down her opponents to plan a strategy that she follows. And Team Rodriguez has quickly realized it’s difficult to find opponents for a boxer with Nisa’s accomplishments and amateur experience for a professional with only one fight to date.

“Keith Sullivan had a hard time finding me an opponent (March 15, 2024 vs. Jozette Cotton) for my first fight,” Rodriguez noted. “I heard he went through 13 girls for my first fight. They wanted a purse for a four-round bout that you’d get for an eight-rounder. Even when they agreed, some still wouldn’t sign the contract. I was surprised Keith got me this opponent (so far ahead of the fight).”

Sullivan also manages reigning International Boxing Federation (IBF) Bantamweight World Champion Miyo Yoshida (17-4, 0 KOs) and Brooklyn heavyweight prospect Pryce Taylor (4-0, 2 KOs), in addition to co-managing World Boxing Association (WBA) No. 11-rated welterweight contender Paddy “The Real Deal” Donovan (14-0, 11 KOs), the reigning WBA Continental Champion from Limerick, Ireland. Sullivan co-manages Donovan with former world middleweight champion Andy Lee.

“I was working on matching Nisa for this fight about 10 minutes after she won her pro debut,” Sullivan added. “I started texting coaches from the venue to line up a formidable opponent. Nisa is getting in with a more experienced and higher ranked boxer. However, given her extensive and outstanding amateur career, we don’t plan on taking the slow train to a world title. I am thankful to Top Rank for putting us on what is going to be a great night of boxing in New York City.”

NYPD officer Nisa Rodriguez shines in pro boxing debut

NEW YORK CITY (March 18, 2024) – New York City police officer and decorated amateur boxer Nisa Rodriguez returned home last Friday night to the scene of many of her amateur victories, Madison Square Garden Theater in Manhattan, and the gifted, popular super middleweight turned in an auspicious pro boxing debut.

Rodriguez, fighting out of Manhattan, pitched a near shutout, winning each round on all but one of the judges’ scorecards enroute to a four-round unanimous decision (40-36 X 2, 39-37) over an outclassed yet game Jozette Cotton on 360 Promotions’ St. Patrick’s Day weekend event streamed live on UFC Fight Pass.

“When I was warming up,” Rodriguez said, “it felt like the golden gloves all over again. I was really relaxed, and everything felt normal. There were so many people there (supporting her), half the (police) department must have been there. It was a long time coming. It was an honor. 360 Promotions took a risk because I hadn’t been active. I want to thank my manager, Keith Sullivan, trainer Jimmy Sosa, and the Bronx crew.

“I wish I started the fight like I ended it, but I hurt a knuckle on my right hand in the first round, and I didn’t let my hand go until later in the fight. Headgear is used in the amateurs to protect the fighter, but I really enjoyed fighting without it because it can be an annoyance, especially for females. I’m ready to go back in the gym yesterday.”

“I am really pleased with her performance,” Sullivan remarked. “For months there has been a lot of noise or hype around this pro debut, and she handled it all in stride. I didn’t pull the typical manager move for a debit and get her a warm body that would go down in one round. Nisa knew she had a tough opponent, but she stayed poised and boxed well. There are always things to improve on, and I’ve never seen a fighter more eager to get back in the gym to grind and work on those things than Nisa. We already are in talks for her next fight. My work on that literally started 10-minutes after Nisa’s hand was raised victoriously Friday night.”

As an elite amateur boxer, Rodriguez was an eight-time New York Daily News Golden Gloves, six-time Metro Championships, two-time Empire State and Caribbean and Central Americano gold medalist. The large majority of these fights were held at Madison Square Garden Theater, so Nisa felt comfortable fighting at home in her pro debut. She also captured three National Golden Gloves Championship titles.

A NYC police officer for two years, Rodriguez is stationed citywide for the rapid response unit, specializing in any crimes that involve adolescents, and supporting families of homicides.

Sullivan, a former Deputy Commissioner with the New York State Athletic Commission, and longtime boxing lawyer, also manages IBF Bantamweight World Champion Miyo Yoshida (17-4, 0 KOs) and Brooklyn heavyweight prospect Pryce Taylor (3-0, 2 KOs), in addition to co-managing World Boxing Association (WBA) No. 12-rated welterweight contender Paddy “The Real Deal” Donovan (13-0, 10 KOs), the reigning WBA Continental Champion from Limerick, Ireland. Sullivan co-manages Donovan with former world middleweight champion Andy Lee.

Attorney Keith Sullivan Signs Amateur boxing star Nisa Rodriguez

NEW YORK CITY (March 11, 2024) – New York City-based lawyer Keith Sullivan has announced his signing of amateur boxing star Nisa Rodriguez to an exclusive managerial contract.

The 33-year-old Rodriguez is a New York City police officer, and former NYC teacher who has captured three National Golden Gloves Championship titles. She is also an eight-time New York Daily News Golden Gloves, six-time Metro Championships, two-time Empire State and Caribbean and Central Americano gold medalist.

Rodriguez is scheduled to make her pro debut this Friday night (March 15) at home in the Madison Square Garden Theater on a 360 Promotions card in a four-round bout versus Jozette Cotton (0-3-1), who is unbeaten in three bare knuckle fights.

“I decided to go professional now,” Rodriguez explained, “mainly due to my son who said he would like to see me go for some world titles now that he’s competing himself at the age of 14. I was set on focusing on my career with the police department, but I saw what boxing has done to inspire and teach other women. So, I’m hoping we can encourage more women to learn the sweet science. My pro debut feels like a homecoming. I’ve grown up at the Mecca of Boxing, where I watched my first Daily News Golden Gloves, and the following year won the title there at the age of 17, the youngest in my division. Fast forward seven more Golden Gloves and many other titles, I’m honored to have my debut where it all started.

“I signed with Keith because we had an opportunity to speak about what is expected from one another and given his track record with helping young amateur kids and reputation for being trustworthy. I utilize help at-risk adolescence I encounter in my line of work and through the Cops and Kids gym– it felt secure and reassuring. I have the utmost confidence he will assist me in my future professional career.”

Rodriguez has been a NYC police officer for two years, stationed citywide for the rapid response unit, specializing in any crimes that involve adolescents and supporting families of homicides.

Sullivan also manages Brooklyn heavyweight prospect Pryce Taylor (3-0, 2 KOs), in addition to co-managing World Boxing Association (WBA) No. 13-rated welterweight contender Paddy “The Real Deal” Donovan (13-0, 10 KOs), the reigning WBA Continental Champion from Limerick, Ireland. Sullivan co-manages Donovan with former world middleweight champion Andy Lee.

“My mother was a teacher, my father was a cop, so putting aside Nisa’s incredible amateur career, I liked how she was living her life,” Sullivan commented. “She is a guiding force for kids who need a good role model. For me, it was a no-brainer based on her character. Combine that with her boxing talent, well, let’s just say I am excited for her future.”
