Zepeda Decisions Gutsy Farmer

William Zepeda won the fight. Tevin Farmer was the star of the show.

Zepeda won a 12-round majority decision to retain the WBC Interim Lightweight title in what turned out to be a thrilling fight in Cancun, Mexico.

Zepeda dominated the early part of the fight with his volume punching. In round three, it seemed that Farmer hurt either or both his left hand and elbow. There were several times where in between rounds that Farmer would bow out of the fight and during rounds it looked like he was unable to defend himself against the volume of Zepeda. Farmer looked badly hurt on several occasions.

In round six, Zepeda began to bleed from the nose. Once Farmer got used to fighting with the injuries, he went to work and started to dominate and even hurt Zepeda down the stretch. In round 12, Farmer landed a left to the head that seemed to make Zepeda’s glove touch the canvas, but referee Michael Griffin ruled a slip. Farmer was able to land several flush flurries but it was too liitle too late as Zepeda was able to hang on for the victory.

Zepeda landed 344 of 974 punches. Farmer was 152 of 679.

Zepeda of Mexico won by scores of 116-112, 115-113 and 114-114 to raise his undefeated record to 33-0. Farmer of Philadelphia is now 33-8-1.

The fight was a rematch from November where Zepeda won a split decision.

“Tevin Farmer is a tremendous fighter,” said William Zepeda, “I knew what I was risking by taking this fight. I have learned a lot now having gone 22 rounds with him, and I can’t wait to go back to the gym to continue to grow. I want to thank all my fans for being here, and for all their support. A big thank you to Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya, Pepe and everyone who helped put this fight together.”

Oscar Collazo Stops Cano to Retain Minimumweight Title

Oscar Collazo retained the WBO Minimumweight Title with a five round beatdown of Edwin Cano.

Collazo dominated and then in round five all of the body work started to do Cano in and a left to the body sent a spent Cano down for the count at 1:12.

Collazo, 105 lbs of Puerto Rico is 12-0 with nine knockouts. Camo, 104.9 lbs of Mexico is 13-3-1.

Velazquez Decisions Castillo

Joselito Velazquez won a 10-round unanimous decision over Adolfo Castillo in a super flyweight bout.

In round one, Velazquez was cut over the right eye from an accidental headbutt. In round three, another butt caused a bad cut around the right eyebrow of Velazquez.

Velazquez, 114 1/4 lbs of Cancun, MEX won by scores of 100-89 twice and i97-92 and is now 21-1-1. Castillo, 114 1/2 lbs of Durango, MEX is 12-5-2.

Safar Stops Gonzalez in 5

Robin Safar stopped Roberto Silva in round five of their 10-round cruiserweight bout.

After a pedestrian beginning, Safar turned up the heat and started batter Silva and the fight was stopped at 2:55.

Safar is now 18-0 with 13 knockouts. Silva is now 13-4.

Valle Decisions Esparza

In a battle of former unified world champions, Yokasta Valle won a 10-round split decision over Marlen Esoarza in a flyweight bout.

Valle, 110.6 lbs of San Jose, CR won by scores of 97-93 twice, wile Esparza won a card 96-94.

Valle is now 33-3. Esparza, 113.9 lbs of Houston is 15-3.

The stellar co-main event, presented in co-promotion with Miguel Cotto Promotions, is part of the highly anticipated rematch between WBC interim lightweight world champion William “El Camarón” Zepeda (31-0, 26 KOs) of San Mateo Atenco, Mexico, and former IBF super featherweight champion Tevin “2X” Farmer (33-7-1, 8 KOs) of Philadelphia. The 12-round main event for Zepeda’s WBC interim title is set for Saturday, March 29, at the Poliforum Benito Juárez in Cancún, Mexico, in association with Cancún Boxing. The fight will be broadcast worldwide on DAZN.

Here is what Collazo had to say:

“This camp is going great. As always, I am giving 150% in this camp. I am focusing on my strategy on this fighter that we were supposed to fight in November. I’ve done over 130 rounds of sparring during this camp. It’s been a very strategic camp. I’m feeling good.”

“My opponent is a good fighter. He is ranked No. 3 by the WBO. He wants to be a world champion like everyone else. This is my fifth title defense, and a lot of people have tried to dethrone me, so this won’t be the exception. Cano is a hell of a fighter, but this is my time.”

“It is a great rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico. This fight is just another one for the list. With Cano in Mexico with all his fans, they’re all out there waiting for me. It is going to be a great show for the Puerto Rico and Mexican fans out there.”

Statement Delivered: Munguia stops Ryder

PHOENIX — A statement was demanded.

Statement delivered.

Jaime Munguia did what Canelo Alvarez could not. He stopped a tough, smart John Ryder Saturday night in a super-middleweight fight that was a test of Munguia’s potential.

There’s plenty of that, perhaps enough for him to land a Canelo fight projected to be in May. It’s all up to Canelo, whose pay-per-view clout and celebrity comes with a perk. He does what he wants to.

It’s anybody’s guess as to whether he wants the Munguia that 10,836 fans at Footprint Center saw against Ryder, whose corner threw in the towel at 1:25 of the ninth round.

“It would be an honor to be in the same ring with him,’’ Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) said when asked the inevitable Canelo question.

Canelo or not, there’s one thing certain about Munguia, a 27-year-old fighter from Tijuana. He stepped out of the ring with enhanced credibility.

He’s a player, a proven threat at 168 pounds. Put him alongside David Benavidez, David Morrell, Edgar Berlanga and Jermall Charlo.

“I was ready for this,’’ he said. “I knew I was ready for this.’’

He knew more than just about anybody other than his Hall of Fame trainer, Freddie Roach. Roach predicated Munguia would win an eighth-round TKO. Roach missed by only a round.

Munguia did it with four knockdowns of Ryder (32-7, 18 KOs), a 35-year-old fighter who faces some tough question about whether his career has come to end.

Munguia knocked down Ryder in the second with a body shot that left a nasty red mark Ryder’s right side. He knocked down the UK fighter again in the fourth with successive left hands.

Then, there was the ninth. There was a right to the top head. Ryder was down for a third time. Then another blow to the head. Ryder was down for a fourth time. The towel soon followed, a sign of surrender for Ryder and the beginning of a second chapter for the emerging Munguia.

Minimum Weight, Max Power: Oscar Collazo retains title

It’s called minimum. Somehow, that isn’t quite fair to Oscar Collazo.

Maximum is more like it.

Collazo, the World Boxing Organization’s minimum weight champion flashed max power, knocking Reyneris Gutierrez, into the ropes and then flat on the canvas before the referee interceded and stopped it for third-round TKO Saturday night on the Jaime Munguia-John Ryder featured card at Footprint Center.

First, it was a huge right hand form Collazo (9-0, 7 KOs) that drove Gutierrez (10-2, 2 KOs) into the ropes. If not for those ropes, The Nicaraguan would have tumbled out of the ring, over the work table and onto the floor. Then, it was a left hand from the Puerto Rican. This time, no ropes were in the way. Gutierrez hit the deck. Moments later, it was over, a TKO:at 37 seconds of the third.

Darius Fulghum  wins a unanimously-booed dud

It was a fight full of clinches, missed punches, rabbit punches, boos  and more boos. There was even the wave.

Just when you thought it was extinct, Darius Fulghum and Alantez Fox brought it back. That’s how bad their super-middleweight fight was on the DAZN-streamed undercard for the Jaime Munguia-John Ryder mnin event at Footprint Center Saturday night.

The booing started in the second round. It got louder, even louder, until a near capacity crowd just bored. It started doing the wave. Yeah, that wave. Hands up, stand up and sit down, going from section to section in an undulating ring around the arena. Hey, it was better than watching the fight.

By the way, Fulghum (10-, 9 KOs), of Houston, won it, scoring a majority

decision over Fox (28-6-1, 13 KOs), of Upper Marlboro MD.

Not so sweet stoppage

Gabriela “Sweet Poison” Fundora 12-0 (9KOs) made her first women’s IBF Flyweight title defense VS Christina Cruz 6-0. The fight was a battle of the sweet science of hit but not get hit, no one fighter looked dominate in the match. One fighter did control the ring through out the fight and was more active with her combinations and stunning her opponent. Fundora was using her ring IQ to cut off the ring and edging out the rounds in her favor in a very close fight. More over as the championship rounds rolled along Gabriela showed the heart of a warrior and took the fight over effortlessly out boxing Cruz. With less than a minute left in the 10th and final round referee Chris Flores stepped in and called a end to the fight in a controversial fashion. Cruz was not hurt and was simply walking away with her guard up still  defending herself. Visibly upset Cruz pleaded her case of why it should not have been stopped with some ringside having it a drawing going into the final round. Coming out on top and staying undefeated Fundora moves to 13-0 (10KOs) in a post fight interview Fundora praised Cruz “Cruz is a good fighter and glad she stepped up” also “I looked to her because she was an olympian and had a picture on my wall as a kid” ending her statement by saying “Cruz is an amazing fighter and it was an honor to share the ring”. When asked about the stoppage Fundora stated “I unleashed on her, and she turned around indicating she no longer wanted to fight”

One can only ask if she deserves a rematch or does the co-promotions between Golden Boy Promotions and Sampson Promotion look to set up a fight for undisputed later this year, Seemingly the road block to undisputed is Marlen Esparza who holds the other 3 tittle and has an upcoming fight that she can not look past herself. Just as her smile, the future is bright for the undefeated fighter of Coachella, CA….David Galaviz

David Picasso scores unanimous decision in U.S. debut

David Picasso wasn’t looking for a masterpiece.

Just a victory.

He got it.

In his first appearance in the United States, Picasso, an unbeaten featherweight from Mexico City, scored repeatedly early, tired midway, then held on and held off Erik Ruiz in the late rounds.

All of it was enough for Picasso (27-0-1, 15 KOs) to secure a unanimous  decision over Ruiz (17-10-1, 7 KOs), a fighter from Oxnard, Calif., who from round to round got more aggressive in a 10-rounder in the first DAZN-streamed fight on the Munguia-Ryder card at Footprint Center.

Daniel Garcia scores crushing first round stoppage

It was over before a lot of arriving fans ever got to their seats.

Daniel Garcia finished the non-DAZN portion of the Jaime Munguia-John Ryder card in a flash at Footprint Center. Daniel Lugo may have seen it coming. But he couldn’t do much about it.

Garcia (8-0, 6 KOs), an unbeaten  lightweight from Denver, sent a right hand flying over the edge of  Lugo’s upraised gloves. Boom, it landed, crashing off Lugo’s chin and driving his head up and around. By the time some fans looked up, it was over.

Lugo (4-2, 1 KO), of Phoenix was down and out, a stoppage loser at 1:51 of the first round.

Gregory Morales scores unanimous decision, rocks Ron and the crowd

In the third bout of the night Gregory Morales (15-1, 9KOs) of San Antonio, TX faced Ronal Ron (14-4 ,11KOs) in a super featherweight fight

In a  feel-out first round both fighters saved all their energy for the last 20 seconds of the round with both having success landing punches. It picked right back up in the second. However as the round came to an end, Morales showed head movement and landed some crisp punches. In the theme of the fight, Morales and Ron saved all the excitement for the end of the round. They got the crowd a little excited. There were theatrics coming from Ron. He spit his mouth piece out around the 2:20 mark. A few second later, he was warned about a head butt. The pace of the round had significantly picked up, with both fighters finding their rhythm and timing. Ron was briefly stunned early in the 5th round by a well placed left from Morales.

As the crowd started chanting “Goyo”, it gave Morales extra motivation, landing a few lefts directly to the chin of Ron.

A left hook by Morales landed. Over the last three rounds, Morales picked up the production of his pace and dazed his opponent with a multitude of punches. The last round served as the best round for Morales as he landed some great combos that made the crowd get even loader. Morales improved to 16-1 (9KOs), scoring a unanimous decision. In fight that brought the crowd to its fight in the final round.the crowd a good fight. —–David Galaviz

Toe-to-Toe: Gael Cabrera scores knockdown wins decision in tough bout

It was power against resilience.

Gael Cabrera, a Mexican featherweight from Sonora — just south of Arizona, had the power. He needed it, all of it to win.

Miguel Ceballos, one of two AZ fighters on the Munguia-Ryder card, had the resilience, almost enough of it to score an upset.

But the power prevailed. A straight right hand from Cabrera (4-0, 3 KOs) put Ceballos down in the first round. Then, Cabrera held on, withstanding repeated bursts of energy from Ceballos (2-1, 2 KOs), of Peoria AZ.  Cabrera appeared to tire, but he still had enough power in both hands to keep Ceballos off him. The result: Cabrera won a unanimous decision in a hard-fought fight.

First Bell: Munguia-Ryder card begins with a quick stoppage

It should have been a matinee. But Jonathan Canas turned it into a short subject.

Canas, a lightweight from Santa Ana CA, needed only 64 seconds to finish Kameeko Hall in the opening bout Saturday afternoon on the card featuring Jaime Mungia-John Ryder at Footprint Center.

Canas, still perfect with three knockouts in three fights, delivered a body-to-head combo that put Hall, a winless fighter from Brunswick GA, onto one knee. It was the body shot that hurt him the most. When Hall (0-4) tried to get onto his feet, he got sick to his stomach. At 1:04 of the first, it was over for everybody but the maintenance crew. It had to clean up the mess.

OSCAR “EL PUPILO” COLLAZO TO MAKE HIS FIRST WORLD TITLE DEFENSE IN HIS HOMELAND OF PUERTO RICO AGAINST GAREN “HELLBOY” DIAGAN OF THE PHILIPPINES

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO (July 28, 2023) – With his eyes locked on legacy making, Puerto Rico’s Oscar “El Pupilo” Collazo (7-0, 5 KOs) will continue his history-making journey as he makes his first WBO Mini Flyweight World Championship defense against Garen “Hellboy” Diagan (10-3, 5 KOs) of General Santos City, Philippines on Saturday, August 26. The first men’s world title fight in Puerto Rico in six years, the special island broadcast of the Golden Boy Fight Night Series on DAZN will take place at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan and is presented in association with Miguel Cotto Promotions. The DAZN broadcast begins at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.

Tickets for Golden Boy Fight Night on DAZN: Collazo vs. Diagan go on-sale Monday, July 31, 2023 at 10:00 am AST and are priced at $125, $100, $55, and $25 plus applicable fees. Tickets can be purchased at Ticketera.com.

“El Pupilo” solidified his place at the top of the list of active Puerto Rican boxers with a meteoric rise in the sport through a spectacular knockout of former titleholder Melvin “Gringo” Jerusalem this past May 27 on the undercard of Rocha vs. Young. Displaying his adaptability and surgical use of a heavy left hand punch that hurt the former champion, Collazo crushed a number of records in his victorious championship fight, including shredding the record for the fastest to become a world champion from Puerto Rico.

“I feel super honored to return to fight where I made my pro-debut, and make my first defense there,” said World Champion Oscar Collazo. “Great champions such as Wilfredo Gómez, Wilfredo Benitez, Tito Trinidad and Miguel Cotto have fought there, and this is another historic moment that marks my career once again. I am super grateful to Miguel Cotto Promotions, Golden Boy and DAZN for believing in me and allowing me to make my first defense here, in front of my people of Puerto Rico. I am very excited and grateful.”

“Like all Filipinos, my opponent comes to fight. He is a strong boxer who has come with two great victories. He is tall and he uses his reach well. We have everything planned and we know the hands that I have can attack and make damage. I just want to continue thanking my fans for the support they have given me, and I want them to support me on August 26 to continue making history together with all my beautiful people from the Island,” concluded Collazo.

With a moniker of “Hellboy,” Diagan is a tough southpaw who created chaos in South Africa when he knocked out local hero Simpiwe Konkco and in Vietnam when he outscored world-ranked Huu Toan Le with a split decision victory. Diagan is not a stranger to being the underdog in a foreign land and securing an upset victory.

“I am amped about my opponent, Collazo is a world champion. I will bring my A-game,” said challenger Garen Diagan. “I’ll do my level-best to prove to all that I can hang with the best of them too. My opponent is a tough cookie and well-rounded fighter. There is something about him that sets him apart from the others – he packs a punch and is on a winning spree. He’s got some serious muscle. My coach and I have a plan, we have been putting in the hours in the gym, and I’ll give it everything I’ve got to show everyone that he’s up against a true Filipino.”

More information on the complete undercard will be announced in the coming weeks.

Media interested in a credential for the fight can email Giancarlo Oquendo of Miguel Cotto Promotions at [email protected]

OSCAR COLLAZO SIGNS WITH MIGUEL COTTO PROMOTIONS AND GOLDEN BOY

CAGUAS, PUERTO RICO (Dec. 3, 2019): Fresh off his gold medal win at the 2019 Pan-American Games in Lima, Peru, standout Puerto Rican prospect Oscar “The Pupil” Collazo has decided to set aside his Olympic aspirations and begin his professional career by signing with Miguel Cotto Promotions and H2 Entertainment in association with Golden Boy. Collazo, who was one of six athletes to bring a gold medal to Puerto Rico from Lima, Peru and the only one to have done so in the sport of boxing, will make his professional debut on Feb. 15 during the first Miguel Cotto Promotions card of 2020.

“I’m a little anxious for my debut. I have great plans,” said Collazo, who had over 140 fights as an amateur. “I want to be the face of boxing in Puerto Rico, and I have the tools to do that. By signing with Miguel Cotto Promotions, I have come to the right places to accomplish those plans.”

“We had many offers on the table, but the best offer was definitely from Miguel Cotto Promotions. Aside from the fact that Miguel had a great career as a boxer, I think we have joined a promoter that can help develop us. It’s enough to see how many world champions they’ve had in [Angel] “Tito” Acosta and [Alberto] Machado, along with many various regional champions. They have a great squadron of prospects. Being with a promoter like that really motivates me.”

Indeed, having someone like ‘Tito’ Acosta is one of the aspects that intrigues Collazo, as he is a fighter who has campaigned on world level in the division that he aspires to reign over in the future. “Acosta would be a great training and sparring partner. He has already been on big stages in professional boxing, and now I have someone I can learn and gain experience from,” opined the 22-year-old native of Villalba.

“We have always been a faithful believer that as an amateur boxer you must have a complete experience because it gives you the tools to be successful at a professional level. Oscar Collazo is a natural talent and has what it takes to be a world champion in the near future,” said Miguel Cotto, President of Miguel Cotto Promotions.

“Oscar Collazo has great talent, and we are very content and enthused that he has put his trust in us to work together. Oscar Collazo will be a world champion,” said Héctor Soto, Vice President and promoter of Miguel Cotto Promotions y H2 Entertainment.

“Golden Boy has crowned several Puerto Rican world champions in the past few years because of our great partnership with Miguel Cotto Promotions,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy. “And now with this new signing, I’m sure that we’ll be developing several more in the near future. Oscar Collazo is a standout talent at mini flyweight, a division where we have hosted many exciting fights in recent months. We look forward jointly promoting this young boxer with our friends at Miguel Cotto Promotions.”
