SUNDERLAND PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES AS PAT McCORMACK TARGETS STATEMENT WIN IN FRONT OF HIS HOME FANS THIS SATURDAY

Pat McCormack warned rival Miguel Parra that he will not let the tough Mexican derail his journey towards a future World Title shot as the pair shared a tense stand-off at their final Press Conference in Sunderland on Thursday.

On Saturday, the pair collide at a sold-out Sunderland Live in an Eliminator for the WBA World Welterweight Title.

The stacked undercard sees Mark Dickinson defend his Super-Middleweight Title in a North East derby with Troy Williamson. Plus, another local lad in Cameron Vuong is looking to extend his flawless record.

Sandy Ryan returns to the UK as she meets a game Jade Grierson, as wonderkids Leo AtangAdam Maca and Tiah-Mai Ayton all look for victories in their respective second professional bouts.

Here’s what the fighters had to say at today’s Press Conference, with the quotes in full below.

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Matchroom Boxing CEO, Frank Smith:
“Pat McCormack is a fighter who we believe will go all the way. By the end of next year the aim has got to be for World Titles

Conah Walker is a tremendous fight for Pat, but you can’t look past Miguel Parra. Pat needs people who are going to push him and I think Conah walker is a fight will we see one day but it’s all about Saturday night.

It’s an exciting card. You’ve always got to be looking towards the future. We’ve had great stars who are coming to the end of their careers. Now we’ve got these young stars who are really building for the future and becoming global stars. These fighters will be looking to push themselves inside and outside the ring and become headliners.

You’ve got to work with the fighters who are going to believe in themselves. We need dedicated and hungry young fighters who will go in there and deliver big performances – but who are also willing to make the effort and put themselves out there outside the ring too.”

Pat McCormack
“I’m buzzing to be back home in the North East. I got a good win against Robbie Davies Jr. last time out, now I’ve got a good world-ranked opponent in front of me.

He’s a very good fighter, a tough Mexican, but I believe I’ve got the skills to beat him. All that matters is winning and looking good.

The British Title is what I want next or European or  Commonwealth. The British against Conah Walker is the fight that everyone seems to be talking about so I’m happy to have it next. But I need to get through Parra first. I’ve got to keep winning, and then I’m just about there.

My prediction? Pat McCormack win. And I’ll look good doing it.”

Miguel Parra:
“It’s going to be the fight of my life [against Pat McCormack]. I’m looking forward to this fight and everything that comes with it.

I’ve had a lot of preparation for this fight. Originally, it was set for 10 rounds but now it’s 12 rounds and I’ve had to really work hard in my training for it.

Mexican fighters are Mexican fighters. I’m going to enjoy this fight and do the very best I can.”

Mark Dickinson:
“I don’t take Troy’s [Williamson] recent form into account. Styles make fights and I think this will make for a big fight. I agree with what he is saying about making the weight and I expect the best Troy Williamson in there on Saturday night.

I don’t see myself as a Champion yet. This Title is a stepping stone to where I want to be. I wouldn’t box if I didn’t think I could be a World Champion. I need to learn my stripes and become a British champion by next year, if I can.

You’d pay to watch us spar, so this will be a cracking fight.”

Troy Williamson:
“Mark [Dickinson] and I have done a lot of rounds together in sparring. I know he’s a quality operator but I can’t wait to go on Saturday night in a new weight division under a new training team.

I’m a big dude and it was killing me to make the weight, but I believe I’ve got a lot left to give and you will see that on Saturday night. Eight years on and I’m back at this weight, my ambition is higher than ever.

Some of the best fighters have lost many times on the bounce. I feel great and I’m really excited to get the ball rolling again on Saturday night. I need to do exactly what I’ve been doing in the gym.

Sandy Ryan:
“You can’t buy experience and I’ve been there, done it. Jade seems confident but she hasn’t been at this level, so we’ll see what she brings Saturday night.

You learn in every fight. For me this fight is the get-back to the old Sandy and that’s what you’ll see this Saturday.

I’ve got really good rounds in with Terri [Harper] this camp. We laugh and joke about sharing the ring and that’s the good side of boxing you don’t get very often. I respect her massively.

You know me, I’ll take any fight. We’ve got Jade in front of us and she seems very game and confident. It should be a good fight, but I don’t ever think she’s been in a deep waters fight. I’ll get past this fight, get back into winning ways and there are some big fights out there for me. “

Jade Grierson:
“I’m a young girl from Newark making it happen. You can only respect the things Sandy has achieved so far in her career, but it’s my time now and I was born to do this.

Anytime would be a good time to fight Sandy regardless of her coming off two defeats. It’s great for my career. I believe I will set the pace, pick my shots and you will see what I’m capable of on Saturday night.

Not many people know but I’ve competed in martial arts since I was six years-old. The amateur game never suited my style.

Sandy talks about ‘deep waters’ but who knows until they’re actually in there? Every one has their own motivation. But I’ll do anything for my daughter and this is for her. I hope you haven’t overlooked me, Sandy.”Cameron Vuong:
“Things have changed massively for me. It’s another level down there [with new trainer Ben Davison in Essex]. I’ve been enjoying training over the past five months and I feel like I’m a new fighter. I’m Cameron Vuong 2.0. I am looking forward to showcasing it on Saturday night. They say if you’re the smartest person in the room, then you’re in the wrong room. T take that attitude into the gym with me, especially being in with fighters who are way ahead of me. So I’m learning a lot every day. I am around a lot of fighters who are a lot better than me, which is great to be around. I’m happy and I am getting better all the time.[On a potential rematch with Gavin Gwynne] I’m sick of hearing his name to be honest. But I am fully focused. I know I need to take care of things on Saturday night, then get him dealt with before I can put my feet up for Christmas.”Leo Atang:
“I felt the pressure [on my debut last July]. There was a lot building up, with the press conference and the weigh-in. It was all new to me. But I took each day at a time and once you actually get in there in the ring, it is what I do day-in, day-out, so I was relaxed completely and do my thing. [On Moses Itauma comparisons] Hats off to him. He’s opened and paved the way for young fighters like myself to turn over early. It’s nice to see someone doing that. I hope I can emulate his pathway. Of course, I take things at my pace, do things my way, and eventually get to where he [Itauma] is at. [On Saturday’s fight] Hopefully it will be the same result with a knockout win and I will be back on the road again soon.”Tiah Mai-Ayton:
[After my debut last June] I took away that next time I’m not going to go in at 100mph. I’m going to calm down a bit and hopefully the stoppage will just come on its own. I think I could become an Undisputed World Champion in about four weight categories. Hopefully I can become the youngest to ever do it as a woman and achieve that by the time I’m 22. Things haven’t changed too much outside the ring in Bristol for me since my debut. But I got the [knockout] reel that I wanted. And I love boxing a lot more now. Every time I’m training in the gym it’s worth it, because I’m here now and I’m really excited to be fighting again on Saturday.Adam Maca:
“I had a week off after [my debut, last June] New York and was straight back in the gym. I think I’ll take all of that in when I retire, having been a world champion. It was great to get that experience on a big stage straight away, so when I do get to those stages and fighting for world titles, that I’m used to it and it’s nothing new to me. I’ll be ready to go. My opponent was looking to bang me out! We see from his previous fights that he was coming to win. The commentators had remarked that an overhand right would introduce me to the pro game. But I was happy with that because I want to be going up against fighters who want to win. On Saturday, I want another knock out and to keep entertaining people by doing what I love.”Brad Casey:
It’s the perfect time for me to turn professional. I’m very excited and I can’t wait to show the world what I’m all about. Obviously, I believe I can go all the way. As an amateur, and I know it’s a cliché to say it, but I believe I had the perfect style to adapt to professional boxing so I can’t wait to prove it. It’s special to be on the same card as Leo Atang and Adam Maca [two of his best friends]. The dream is to go all the way and become a world champion.Tune in on Friday for the Official Weigh-In, starting at 1pm – live on DAZN

EDDIE HEARN PROVIDES AJ UPDATE AS PAT McCORMACK NAMES THE BIG FIGHT HE WANTS NEXT IN NEW MATCHROOM BOXING PODCAST

Flash Knockdown is recharged, reloaded and better than ever before as Matchroom Boxing’s weekly Podcast officially relaunches.

Fronted by TV presenter Jamie Ward and Scott Hammerton, the new series is back with a bang – and joined by a host of big names.

Matchroom Sport chairman Eddie Hearn takes up his regular, exclusive slot to run through the inner workings at the sport’s No.1 global promotion – providing the latest update on the future of two-time World Heavyweight Champion, Anthony Joshua.

Pat McCormack names the mouth-watering, all-domestic clash he would love to have next as he first targets a statement victory over Mexico’s Miguel Parra in their Eliminator for the WBA World Welterweight Title this weekend in front of his home fans in Sunderland.

With the countdown to Belfast in full flow, things get heated in the studio as rivals Ishmael Davis and Caoimhín Agyarko verbally slug it out before they square-off at the Clearer Twist National Stadium at Windsor Park on Saturday, September 13.

And we hear direct from a man who knows a thing or two about headlining at that very stadium as DAZN analyst Carl Frampton runs the rule over the upcoming, historic all-Irish IBF World Welterweight Championship clash between Lewis Crocker and Paddy Donovan.

Packed with entertainment, unrivalled insight, a new weekly charity quiz, and much more, Flash Knockdown is not to be missed – and episode one is available to download now at audio platforms and free to watch at Matchroom Boxing’s YouTube channel.

SELECTED QUOTES FROM EPISODE ONE

Eddie Hearn:
“As the time ticks by, it’s probably more likely that we see [Anthony Joshua] in the ring again for a January/February date if I’m honest. I don’t think there’s any value in us saying it will be in December. He’s been travelling about a bit but he’s back in training following an elbow operation. But these big fights take time and every AJ event is a massive event. It was well publicised about the meetings that took place in Ghana over the last couple of weeks. There has been an offer to do a fight there and I think it would be incredible for AJ to fight in Africa. However, when you are doing site deals a lot of it depends on when the host wants to stage the show. So, if Ghana comes back and says they’d like to go in January/February, then that’s the offer. I don’t think there’s a rush, albeit he has been out of the ring for almost a year now. Any fight he has next though is likely to be a warm-up fight for that ‘roll the dice’ fight. We hope, in an ideal world, that is Tyson Fury. If not, it will be against one of the top five Heavyweights.”

Ishmael Davis:
“We’ve got a different heart, I show more in and out the ring. The way he’s handled situations, I don’t respect them. I’ve just got to find my way of getting through that and break him [Caoimhín Agyarko] down. A loss doesn’t define me, I don’t think he would have even fought Bohachuk on three months notice. Be prepared to lose on September 13!”

Caoimhín Agyarko:
“I have a dream of becoming the first black Irish World Champion. I’m not sure where these stories are coming from, I sparred him [Ishamel Davis] before with a snapped ligament in my hand. Whether he wants to box or fight, I’ll have a game plan on the night. Do I believe I have the ability to go out and make it my easiest fight? Yes.”

Pat McCormack:
“Miguel is tough, experienced and been in some good fights but I’m flying the flag for the North East and there’s no injuries now. I’m feeling good and ready to go. The Conah Walker fight is the one to make but I’m fully focused on Parra first, he’s a tough lad but my boxing brain and skills will show.”

“I’VE LOOKED UP TO PAT McCORMACK EVER SINCE I WAS A KID”: CAMERON VUONG BACKS STABLEMATE FOR WORLD TITLE CHARGE

Cameron Vuong has absolutely no doubt that stablemate Pat McCormack will one day become a World Champion as the pair get ready to return to their native North East this weekend.

McCormack headlines in his hometown on Saturday night against Mexico’s dangerous Miguel Parra at the sold-out Sunderland Live in a fight that is now an Eliminator for the WBA World Welterweight Championship.

The Team GB Olympic hero, who won Silver at the 2020 Tokyo Games, is regarded as one of the future stars of British Boxing – and Vuong is confident that McCormack will underline his future World Title aspirations with a statement victory on his home patch.

“I’ve looked up to Pat McCormack ever since we were kids, so it’s great to be on his card,” said Vuong.

“I’m genuinely privileged to train up close with him everyday in the gym. Pat is a supremely talented fighter and I have no doubt that he will go on and become a World Champion. And I hope I can match that feat myself one day too. I want to be a complete fighter and I want to get to world level  – I don’t care how long it takes me.”

Vuong, at 23, is also widely rated as one of the up-and-coming prospects on the domestic scene. He is unbeaten in eight fights, four by way of knockout, with wins over the likes of Gavin Gwynne and Jordan Flynn on his résumé.

After his impressive seventh round stoppage win over Flynn last March in Altrincham, “The One” from Blyth decided to head down to Essex and set up a new partnership with top trainer Ben Davison.

It is a move that Vuong believes will rapidly accelerate his burgeoning career citing a huge transformation in his in-ring skills, which he promises to showcase this Saturday in front of his home faithful against Argentina’s experienced Requen Facundo Arce.

“I can’t wait to show everyone Cameron Vuong 2.0,” added Vuong.

“It’s my first fight under Ben Davison and he’s really got me on it. I’ve improved in every area. It’s another level down here. Every day I come to the gym, I feel like I’m under pressure. And it’s made a massive change in me. I feel like a whole new fighter.

“I’m really excited to be fighting to Sunderland, so close to home – but not quite home, it has to be said – for all my family and friends. And I’m sure it will be a happy night for both me and Pat.”

“I’M ONLY GETTING BETTER”: CONFIDENT PAT McCORMACK PLOTS HUGE HOMECOMING WIN OVER MIGUEL PARRA TO SPARK WORLD TITLE CHARGE

Pat McCormack is ready to ignite his rise up the rankings in less than two weeks time, when the Olympic hero battles tough Mexican puncher Miguel Parra in his native North East for the WBA Intercontinental Welterweight Championship on Saturday, September 6 – live on DAZN.

The Tokyo 2020 Games Silver Medalist for Team GB headlines in his hometown for the first time as part of a bumper Matchroom Boxing Fight Night at the sold-out, Sunderland Live.

And the undefeated Brit knows that a big, statement performance against Parra – who is on a run of three successive wins since last summer’s split decision defeat in Santa Monica by No.1 ranked Shakhram Giyasov – will go a long way in elevating his name in the World Title picture, where he in currently positioned neatly at No.8.

McCormack said“I believe people have only seen about 65 per cent of me and I’m only getting better. In my last fight [victory over Robbie Davies Jr in February] I proved I’m better than British level, and a win on September 6 puts me up onto the world stage.

“[Miguel] Parra is tough, game, and he’s been in there with some good people. So, I’ve got an opportunity to make a statement.

“I’m so glad this fight is in the North East. I’m going to get the win and look good doing it.”

Mark Dickinson, meanwhile, makes the inaugural defence of his English Super Middleweight Title when he collides with fellow North East rival Troy Williamson.

Dickinson said“I’m really excited and confident about this fight. And I think it’s the perfect fight to show how good I really am.”

The popular, former WBO World Champion Sandy Ryan is back on British shores too, taking on the undefeated Jade Grierson, as the Derby fan-favourite launches her quest to rule the Welterweight division once again.

Blyth’s own Cameron Vuong returns for the first time since last March and is just a stone’s throw from his home patch as the highly-rated, unbeaten Lightweight prospect bids to successfully kickstart his partnership under new trainer Ben Davison when he battles Argentina’s Requen Facunda Arce.

And the best teenage talent in British boxing all get set for their second bouts in the professional ranks as Tiah-Mai AytonAdam Maca and Heavyweight sensation Leo Atang look to light up a stacked card in Sunderland – which features the pro debut of York Cruiserweight, Brad Casey.

MCCORMACK MEETS UNDEFEATED AMERICAN DOBSON AS MATCHROOM RETURN TO NEWCASTLE FOR LATEST NXTGEN SHOW ON NOVEMBER 11

Rising Welterweight star Pat McCormack will headline his first ever show when he puts his WBA Intercontinental Title on the line against undefeated American Peter Dobson at the Utilita Arena Newcastle on Saturday November 11, live worldwide on DAZN.

Matchroom return to Newcastle for their latest NXTGEN offering following Cyrus Pattinson’s unforgettable war with Welshman Chris Jenkins back in March, but this time all eyes will be on Tokyo 2020 Olympic Silver Medallist McCormack who takes his biggest step up to date.

Sunderland’s McCormack (5-0, 4 KOs) has breezed through his first five opponents since turning pro in March 2022, claiming his first title in the paid ranks last time out in July as he retired Ton Dixon in four rounds to earn the WBA ranking title.

The Ben Davison-trained talent returns to the Utilita Arena Newcastle for the third time as defends his belt against New York’s Dobson (16-0, 9 KOs), who arrives on these shores full of confidence having won all 16 of his professional contests since turning over in 2014.

Residing in The Bronx, Dobson has fought exclusively in the US throughout his pro career, and the 33-year-old known as ‘Pistol Pete’ will be aiming to win his second title after outpointing Jeremy Nichols to claim the WBC USA Silver Welterweight crown in 2017.

Jarrow Super-Welterweight Ewan Mackenzie (8-0, 3 KOs) takes on Leeds’ Ishmael Davis (11-0, 5 KOs) in an Eliminator for the English Title and West Rainton’s Mark Dickinson (5-0, 1 KO) takes on Chatham’s Grant Dennis (18-5, 3 KOs) in an Eliminator for the English Middleweight Title, with the undefeated former Team GB standout looking to make it six wins from six fights since turning pro in October 2021.

Gateshead Lightweight Calum French (4-0, 1 KO) fights Shaun Cooper (13-5) over eight rounds, Essex Middleweight Jimmy Sains (1-0) looks to build on his debut win in Wembley last week, Newcastle Lightweight amateur standout Cameron Vuong steps through the ropes for a second time as a pro, Birltey Super-Lightweight Owen Rees (1-0, 1 KO) fights over six rounds and is joined on the card by his brother Ben Rees (1-0-1, 1 KO) who fights over six rounds at Light-Heavyweight.

“It’s a dream for me to headline a card in Newcastle, against an unbeaten American, it’s a step up and a chance for me make a statement,” said McCormack. “The goal is to eventually bring the regular big nights back to Newcastle.”

“Firstly I’d like to thank Matchroom for giving me the opportunity to showcase my talent,” said Dobson. “I was scheduled to fight Caoimhin Agyarko last year when he pulled out with an injury. My team has stayed in contact and this opportunity arose.

“Pat McCormack was a good amateur but with all due respect he’s never seen anything remotely close to my level as a pro. If you check my credentials, I’ve made a career out of showing up and beating guys I wasn’t expected to beat. This won’t be any different. I’ll break him down and stop him in his backyard.

“To be honest I’d stop this muppet and his brain dead brother in the same night. I genuinely think Eddie Hearn is one of the smartest guys in boxing. Unfortunately I’m going to show him that he f***d up in investing in this liability that is going absolutely nowhere in this sport.”

“The North East’s brightest star Pat McCormack returns to the Utilita Arena Newcastle to headline his first ever show as he defends his WBA Intercontinental Title against undefeated American Peter Dobson at the top of our latest NXTGEN show,” said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. “Pat has looked flawless since joining the professional ranks in 2022 and I strongly believe that it won’t be long before he is bringing World Title fights back to the arena. He faces his toughest test to date in the shape of unbeaten Bronx hard man Peter Dobson who is supremely confident of handing the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Silver Medallist his first loss in the pros – this promises to be an electric fight. Some of the North East’s best up and coming talent get another chance to impress on home turf including Mark Dickinson, Calum French and Cameron Vuong. Catch it live around the world on DAZN.”

PATTINSON VS. JENKINS HEADLINES MARCH 18 NXTGEN CARD IN NEWCASTLE

Matchroom’s first NXTGEN card of the year at the Utilita Arena Newcastle on Saturday March 18 features some of the very best prospects in the North East and beyond looking to take the next steps in their promising careers, live worldwide on DAZN.

Former Team GB standout Cyrus Pattinson (5-0, 3 KOs) faces his toughest test so far in the professional ranks against Wales’ former British Welterweight Champion Chris Jenkins (23-6-3, 8 KOs) – with the pair clashing for the vacant WBA International Title.

Alnwick’s Pattinson hasn’t put a foot wrong since turning over in Newcastle back in June 2021, winning all five of his contests – with three coming by way of knockout – and the 28-year-old southpaw picked up the vacant IBO Continental Title last time out in Nottingham.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Silver Medallist turned Welterweight prospect Pat McCormack (3-0, 2 KOs) looks to wow his home crowd against Italy’s Dario Socci (15-7-2, 6 KOs) in his first scheduled eight-round contest.

The Ben Davison-trained talent put pen to paper on a long-term promotional deal with Eddie Hearn last October and made a winning start to life under the Matchroom banner by outpointing Christian Nicolas Andino at Wembley’s OVO Arena in November.

Birmingham Heavyweight Solomon Dacres (5-0,1 KO) gets the opportunity to fight for his first title in the paid ranks as he collides with Newcastle’s unbeaten Robert Ismay (11-0, 4 KOs) for the vacant English Heavyweight Title.

Leeds Super-Bantamweight contender Hopey Price (9-0, 3 KOs) fights for his second pro title as he continues his march up the 122lbs ladder, taking on Frenchman Thomas Masson (20-5-1, 7 KOs) for the vacant WBA Continental Title.

West Rainton’s former Team GB Podium Squad member Mark Dickinson (4-0, 1 KOs) faces Bury’s Ben Ridings (5-3) over eight rounds at Middleweight and Gateshead Lightweight Calum French (3-0, 1 KO) fights Seaham’s Jordan Ellison (14-44-3, 1 KO) over eight rounds in a North East derby.

Elsewhere on the card there’s action for Leicester Super-Bantamweight debutant Muhammad Ali, Darlington Super-Lightweight Ben Marksby (6-0), Eltham Super-Flyweight prospect Maiseyrose Courtney (1-0) and Sunderland Super-Featherweight Adam Reichard (1-0).

“I’m absolutely buzzing to be fighting in Newcastle on March 18,” said Pattinson. “2023 is a huge year for me and to be kicking it off by fighting in front of a home crowd in unreal. Nobody creates an atmosphere like the Geordies and I’m determined to put on a show for them in what is the biggest fight of my career so far. I cannot wait.”

“A win that I’m more than capable of come March 18 would most definitely put me back in the mix,” said Jenkins. “Winning a title means I have value in the sport and I’ll move on and fight who ever wants it. I’m an old school fighter, I’ll fight anyone!

“I’m expecting Cyrus to come out of the blocks like he always does and I’ll be ready for him. He looks a good come forward fighter, he does most things well but I’ve seen a few flaws in his fighting that I think I can use in the fight.”

“It’s great to be back up in Newcastle for our very first NXTGEN card of the year starring some of the brightest talents in the North East and beyond,” said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. “We’ve enjoyed some brilliant nights in Newcastle over the years with the likes of Lewis Ritson and I can see Tyneside turning into a real hotbed of boxing talent with the next wave of headliners coming through.

“Pat McCormack is one of the very best amateurs we’ve seen on these shores in recent times and I’m excited for a busy year with him. Cyrus Pattinson gets the chance to headline in front of home crowd as he takes a big step up against the experienced Chris Jenkins and there’s title action for Solomon Dacres and Hopey Price plus much more. Catch it all live around the world on DAZN.”

Probellum Throwdown Live – Pat McCormack wins on debut as Troy Williamson keeps belt in classic

NEWCASTLE, MARCH 25 – Pat McCormack announced himself as a professional with a vicious first round knockout win on his debut

The Olympic silver medallist landed a left hook to the body of Justin Menzie with just over 90 seconds left of the opening round at Probellum Throwdown in Newcastle.

Menzie was in agony from the expertly placed shot and was unable to beat the referee’s count.

McCormack’s huge home support at the Utilita Arena went wild and chanted ‘There’s only one Pat McCormack’ as they celebrated his perfect introduction to the paid ranks.

“I’m very happy, it was a good performance in front of all of these amazing fans,” McCormack said.

“Getting a first round stoppage on my debut, I couldn’t be happier.”

Earlier in the night, Troy Williamson dragged himself off the floor to out-point Mason Cartwright and retain his British super-welterweight title in a fight of the year contender.

Williamson was sent to the canvas in round two by the challenger and looked in big trouble in the early stages but the 30-year-old dug in to win scores of 116-111, 117-112 and 114-113 on the judges’ scorecards.

The Darlington man won the belt in a classic with Ted Cheeseman last year and delivered yet more drama in front of a frenzied crowd at the Utilita Arena.

“What a fight, what a fight!” said Sam Jones, Head of Talent Relations at Probellum.

“Huge credit to Mason.  I thought some of the scorecards were too wide, I had it by one round for Troy, but what a fight.”

Cartwright said: “This was my first 12 rounder and we’ve just had a great fight – maybe we can do it again?”

Mark Dickinson picked up a valuable six rounds against the tough Hungarian Peter Kramer, winning 60-54 on the scorecard, and said: “He was a tough guy with a winning record so it was good to get the rounds in.

“These are the kind of fights I want, and you don’t see many fighters my age, in their third fight, going in with guys who have winning records.

“I want to say a big thank-you to the North East fans, they are the best fans in the country.”

Dickinson, a gym-mate of McCormack,  is now 3-0.

Richard Schaefer makes Canelo Alvarez prediction for Pat McCormack

LONDON, MARCH 23 – Richard Schaefer has made the same prediction about the future of Pat McCormack as he did for a young Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez – that the Olympian will become a pound-for-pound great.

Probellum President Schaefer said “nobody really believed” him when he told the boxing world that Alvarez was destined for the very top of the sport, when he began promoting the Mexican over a decade ago.

But Schaefer was proven correct as Canelo has grown into a multi-weight world champion and the biggest fighter on the planet.

McCormack, an Olympic silver medallist, makes his professional debut in Newcastle on Friday night at Probellum Throwdown and Schaefer says the 26-year-old will become a world champion and takeover the sport – just like Canelo.

“I know I am going to be right because I was right in 2009 when I signed young fighter and I said: ‘This guy is going to be the face of the sport, he’s going to be pound-for-pound the best fighter in the world’” Schaefer said.

“Nobody really believed me, they said it was promoter talk but that guy was Canelo Alvarez. I consider myself to be extremely fortunate to work with such a generational talent. I am telling you guys, remember where you heard it first, he will be world champion, he will be a superstar, he will be the face of the sport because he has all the ingredients.

“Pat was the most sought-after talent out there, irrespective of weight, following the Olympic Games and if he stays sharp, stays focused and doesn’t listen to all of these outside influences, then the sky is the limit. It is an honour to be able to work with Pat McCormack.”

McCormack faces Nicaragua’s Danny Mendoza over six rounds at the Utilita Arena and has promised to go looking for the spectacular knockout win if the chance presents itself.

“I’ve not boxed since the Olympics and feel like I was celebrating my silver medal for about five months!” McCormack said with a smile.

“But I’ve been training with Ben Davison since January, working on things and I trust Ben and the team, so I am going to go out there and do my thing on Friday night.

“If I smell blood I am going to take Mendoza out.”

McCormack’s coach Ben Davison added: “I’ve not seen someone make the adjustment that quickly before. When he first walked into the gym, he looked like a top amateur but now he looks a world champion. And to make those adjustments that quickly, to be honest with you, is quite mind-blowing for me and the other coaches in the gym.”

Pat McCormack to fight international opponent on professional debut

The exceptional Great Britain amateur, who won a silver medal at the Tokyo Games last summer, is scheduled to meet Danny Mendoza (6-7, 4KO) over six rounds in Newcastle on Friday, March 25.

There is a huge buzz about the pro debut of McCormack after a stellar amateur career that saw him secure Commonwealth Games gold and silvers at the World Amateur Championships and European Championships, as well as his Olympic medal from Japan.

“We are all incredibly excited about what the future holds for Pat McCormack,” said Richard Schaefer, President of Probellum.

“He begins his professional journey, in front of his home fans in Newcastle, on March 25 and we all believe that Pat will go to the very top of the sport.

“His amateur pedigree is exceptional, and we know he has the capabilities to be even better in the pro ranks. Pat McCormack’s fights are going to be must-see events for every boxing fan, not just in the UK, but around the world.”

He will perform at the Probellum Throwdown event which will bring together some of the biggest names from the red-hot north east boxing scene, with local hero Lewis Ritson headlining a stacked card when he fights former world champion Dejan Zlaticanin.

Taking place at the Utilita Arena, on Friday March 25, Probellum returns to the north-east following its sell out inaugural UK show in Sunderland in December.

The upcoming event features some of British boxing’s biggest and brightest talents, with tickets available to purchase via Ticketmaster from today (Friday January 28).

Having signed to Probellum last month, Williamson (17-0-1, 13 knockouts), from Darlington, aims to maintain his unbeaten record in what will be the first defence of his British super-welterweight title, which he secured courtesy of an eye-catching knockout victory over British fighter Ted Cheeseman in October 2021.
