Pawel Wolak retires
Junior Middleweight contender, Pawel Wolak has decided to call it quits after thirty two professional fights. On his facebook page, Wolak stated, “I am at peace with my decision to retire from boxing. I left it all in the ring and I have absolutely no regrets. I got to do what most people will never be able to and I couldn’t be more proud to have been part of the best sport in the world.”
In regards to his plans now that he has retired, Wolak wrote, “I will stay active, busy and in boxing shape as I have done since 17 years old but I hope to help other fighters in the NY area in their careers.”
Pawel Wolak ends his boxing career with a record of twenty nine wins, with nineteen knockouts, with only two losses and one draw. 2011 was a very good year for the Junior Middleweight who carried a large Polish following. He stopped the popular Yuri Foreman in March, and then fought to a draw against Delvin Rodriguez in what many consider to be the best fight of the year. After much demand for a rematch, they met again at Madison Square Garden this past weekend, with Wolak losing a decision.
In closing, Wolak wrote, “The list of people to thank is too long but you all know you are. Thank you to my core team, my family, my friends and the fans who have made me a better husband, man, father, son and fighter. I am forever grateful. Thank you to Top Rank for always having my back and to the boxing media who have always been fair and treated me with respect. I am not going to do any interviews at this time. While I am retiring I am staying under contract for the duration of my contract terms with both Top Rank and my manager Cameron Dunkin. Please direct all questions to Cameron.”
RODRIGUEZ DOMINATES WOLAK
December 5, Bronx, NY….Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing’s prize Jr. Middleweight Delvin Rodriguez (26-5-2 14KO Danbury, CT) scored the most impressive win of his career Saturday night at the sold out Madison Square Garden as he pitched a near shutout over highly rated Pawel Wolak (29-2-1 19KO Mt. Arlington, NJ) over the 10 round distance. The unanimous scores read 98-92, 98-91, and 100-90 by the 3 judges at ringside.
The rematch of their first epic encounter on July 15 of this year was vastly different as Rodriguez used a razor like jab and sharp combinations from the opening bell to stymie Wolak’s attack. Wolak tried his best in his ever pressing style but one could see early that this was going to be Rodriguez’ night.
Both fighters were willing early but by the 4th round Rodriguez started to take over using all the punches in his arsenal to go along with deft foot movement as he started to pile up the points. As the bell sounded for the 10th and final round, both fighters received a well desevered ovation from the crowd and Rodriguez immediately went to work stunning Wolak with several combinations. As the round wore on Rodriguez went for the knockout, much to the crowds delight, as he continually unleashed devestating punches to Wolak’s body and head. To his credit, Wolak hung in gamely to the final bell and the crowd roared its approval as the fight ended.
It was clearly Delvin’ most significant win to date. Star Boxing’s founder and CEO Joe DeGuardia had this to say about his fighter, ” Delvin fought like a champion tonight. He rose to the occasion like true champions do. Further he showed in round 10 that from here on, Delvin is prepared to go for it all. After a long and hard road for Delvin, I believe Delvin has turned the corner and showed he has what it takes to be on the big stage and reach his goals”. Star Boxing congratulates Delvin, his manager AJ Galante and trainer Fernely Feliz.
The Rodriguez-Wolak bout was part of the Pay-Per-View telecast of the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito fight held Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in NYC, NY.

RODRIGUEZ READY FOR WOLAK REMATCH ON DECEMBER 3RD AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN
CATSKILLS, NEW YORK (November 10, 2011)-With just under a month before the biggest fight in his career, Joe DeGuardia is happy to report that Star Boxing’s Delvin Rodriguez is right on schedule with his preparation for his much anticipated rematch with Pawel Wolak (29-1-1, 19 KO’s) which is part of the Miguel Cotto – Antonio Margarito HBO Pay Per View card at Madison Square Garden that will take place on December 3rd.
Rodriguez and Wolak engaged in what many are calling the leading candidate for fight of the year that took place on July 15th. Both guys stood their ground, showed tremendous courage and thrilled the sold out crowd at the Roseland Ballroom in a bout that was a draw. Each guy claimed victory and on December 3rd they will get a chance to prove who is better.
Rodriguez (25-5-3, 14 KO’s) has had a smooth training camp as he is secluded in the Catskills.
“Everything has been smooth, on point and intense”, said Rodriguez.
Rodriguez believes that the familiarity and his own versatility will be the difference this time around.
“I know what he brings to the table. He is a brawler and he can’t change that. I can do different things in the ring and I know that will be the difference”
“These two styles go together and this will be another exciting fight”
Rodriguez of Danbury, Connecticut loves the fact that this fight has become an East Coast rivalry with the New Jersey resident and it’s only fitting that this showdown will take place at the Mecca of boxing.
“Because of the first fight, people on the East Coast are treating this like the main event. I have worked so hard to get to this point. This is even bigger then my world title fights because it’s my time to show that I belong.”
“This is such a big card and when I win this fight, I will show the people that I deserve to be mentioned with all the names at the top of the division. It’s great that the main event is Cotto and Margarito because when I win it could definitely put me in position to fight the winner of that fight and the combination of all that is what motivates me”
The Delvin Rodriguez-Pawel Wolak fight is part of the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito II world championship telecast, which begins at 9 pm (EST)/6 pm (PT). It will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View and will be available to more than 292 million pay-per-view homes. The telecast will be available in HDTV for those who can receive HD. HBO Pay-Per-View, a division of Home Box Office, Inc., is the leading supplier of event programming to the pay-per-view industry.
Tickets for the Madison Square Garden card are priced at $600, $400, $300, $200, $100 and $50. They can be purchased at the Madison Square Garden box office, online at www.thegarden.com and all Ticketmaster outlets.

Cotto – Margarito 2 undercard press conference Photo Gallery
Before Nonito Donaire’s win over Omar Naravez this past Saturday, Top Rank hosted a press conference to announce the spectacular undercard that will take place before the much hyped rematch between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito. 15rounds.com Claudia Bocanegra got the shots of Mike Jones, Pawel Wolak, Delvin Rodriguez and Mike Lee who will be appearing in high profile bouts on December 3rd.
Rodriguez – Wolak II set for Cotto – Margarito II undercard
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, one of the candidates for Fight of They Year will have it’s sequal on the December 3rd Miguel Cotto – Antonio Margarito undercard as Jr. Middleweight Delvin Rodriguez and Pawel Wolak will attempt to pick up where they left off their July 15th slugfest that ended in a draw.
The card will take place at Madison Square Garden.
“The rematch is a little sooner than I wanted as I wanted a title to be in place first, but the fans deserve this and this is the right stage,” Wolak told ESPN.com on Wednesday night after agreeing to the fight. “You know it will be another classic.”
“I want the fight. It’s a great fight and a great opportunity,” Rodriguez said. “It is definitely a tough fight, but I enjoyed our first fight and I know I have to be 150 percent in shape, the best I can be. He brought out the best in me. He’s a guy you have to be prepared for to be able to keep up. I see the fight going even better for myself this time.”
“It’s turning out to be, on paper, the perfect night,” Top Rank president Todd duBoef said. “What a way to come back to the Garden after not having a big fight there for a while. There is a slow process that occurs when making matches but for this one, everything ended falling into place perfectly.”
Wednesday, Top Rank’s Carl Moretti worked it out with Dunkin and DeGuardia while Ramos-Rigondeaux is headed for a purse bid.
“Adding this fight to the card, they’re going to need a renovation from the renovation with the place being so crazy,” Moretti said, referring to the ongoing overhaul at Madison Square Garden. “Delvin brings a crowd, the Polish fans will be there to support Wolak and you have a big main event, it is going to be crazy. It’s going to be a special night at the Garden.”
“People want the fight. This fight needs no promotion,” Rodriguez said. “Fighting under Cotto-Margarito, I know the crowd will be jumping. People have been waiting for this fight since right after the first fight. Everyone keeps asking, ‘When is the rematch?’ It’s something people keep telling me about, something boxing needs.”

Wolak and Rodriguez fight to draw in classic
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK — For thirty-six minutes, Pawel Wolak and Delvin Rodriguez turned midtown Manhattan’s Roseland Ballroom into the Roseland Brawlroom as they went at it from bell to bell in an exhilarating fight that was ultimately ruled a majority draw.
There’s no secret as to what Pawel Wolak’s gameplan is inside the boxing ring: come forward, bring pressure, force the action. On Friday night, Delvin Rodriguez was tasked with figuring out a way to turn off a constantly charging Wolak’s engine.
For the first two rounds, Wolak’s pressure looked like it may be too much for Rodriguez, who struggled to ward off his Polish opponent. Wolak fired punch after punch from point-blank range, doing most of his work to Rodriguez’s midsection.
In the third round, Rodriguez seemed to find working solutions to Wolak’s aggressiveness. The Connecticut native used a combination of jabs, right uppercuts, and left hooks to Wolak’s face to slow him down as best he could.
It would be those left hooks to the right eye of Wolak that would ultimately add an extra element into the fight.
By the fifth round, those hooks began to take a toll on Wolak’s eye — it began to swell.
After two more action packed rounds, Wolak stood up from his stool to begin round seven only to reveal a giant growth on the right side of his face. His eye didn’t just swell up — his eye grew — it ballooned. At any moment it looked as if a Rodriguez left hook to the growth would cause it to deflate, and Wolak would look like a human being again.
Except, those left hook’s did the exact opposite. As Wolak continued to walk forward, Rodriguez — in retreat, continued to pepper Wolak’s right side. While Wolak ultimately threw more punches and pressed the action, Rodriguez threw the more effective and precise punches. It was amazing to watch the constant back and forth, to see what style would ultimately win out.
At the ends of the 7th, 8th, and 9th rounds, the ringside physician inspected Wolak’s swelling eye and ruled he was fit to continue.
Rodriguez had his best rounds late. Landing a majority of punches he threw, finding it just a bit easier to create some space to get off his own punches before eating a few of Wolak’s wild blows to the body.
By round ten, the entire Ballroom was on their feet. Half the crowd supporting Rodriguez, waving “DR” towels in the air, chanting “Delvin! Delvin!”. The other half, wearing some sort of Polish gear or standing behind one of two large flags, one that read “New York Polska” and the other that read “Raging Bull Pawel Wolak” chanted “Pawel! Pawel!”
They continued to battle until the final bell. Thirty-six minutes, non-stop action. ESPN Friday Night Fight’s Fight Of The Year frontrunner.
From ringside I scored the bout 96-94, Wolak.
The important people, Tom Schreck, Steve Weisfeld, and Julie Lederman disagreed
Judge Tom Schreck saw the bout 97-93, Rodriguez, while Judges Steve Weisfeld and Julie Lederman agreed on a 95-95 score, which resulting in the fight being ruled a majority draw.
I think it’s safe to say that I can speak for all those watching, in attendance or on the World Wide Leader…. “Rematch, please!”
The co-feature of the evening Raymond Serrano (15-0, 8 KO’s, 141 ¼lbs) took on Daniel Sostre (11-3-1, 4 KO’s, 141 ¼lbs). Neither fighter took their time feeling each other out, as they both began the bout by throwing aggressive combinations. Serrano was more patient and worked Sostre’s body very effectively. The right hand was the main punch of the fight, as both fighters were able to land that fight effectively. Sostre was able to land them from the outside, and Serrano was able to get his in as counterpunches while in closer.
Halfway through the fight, neither fighter was in total control, but Serrano seemed to have trouble figuring out Sostre, who was landing some hard shots. As the bout continued, Serrano regained his composure and began pressing the action onto his fading opponent. It appeared that Serrano’s excellent body work was paying off. As Sostre continued to tire, the fight began to get more and more sloppy. Still, Serrano maintained his composure and smartly boxed his way towards a unanimous decision with scores that read 78-74, 78-74, and 77-75.—Arben Paloka
Rogelio Sanchez vs. Steven Gamache — 4 Rounds, middleweight
In the first of two swing bouts that followed the main event, New York City’s Steven Gamache scored a unanimous decision victory over Fort Wayne, Indiana’s Rogelio Sanchez.
About a minute or so into the first round, Gamache landed a perfectly placed right hand on Sanchez’s chin, sending him to the canvas. Sanchez beat the referee’s ten count and did surprisingly well the remainder of the round.
In the third round, Sanchez almost evened the score when he landed a huge right of his own that wobbled his hometown counterpart. Unlike Sanchez in round one, however, Gamache remained upright and weathered the mild storm.
In the end, one judge saw the bout 40-35 and two others scored it 39-36, all in favor of Gamache.
With the win, Gamache improves to 2-0, 1 KO, while Sanchez remains winless and falls to 0-4.
Reggie LaCrete vs. Lionel “Lonnie B.” Thompson — 4 Rounds, cruiserweight
The final bout of the evening saw two undefeated New York cruiserweights square off against one another: Brooklyn’s Reggie LaCrete and Buffalo’s Lionel Thompson.
Although he entered the bout having not lost a bout in six professional fights, it was clear from the get-go that Reggie LaCrete was going to get one handed to him courtesy of Thompson.
It was ultimately Thompson’s slickness and speed that did LaCrete in — he struggled finding his target for all four rounds. Thompson is a promising prospect who has a little bit of Roy Jones Jr. in him. He’s slick, he throws from all angles, he’s got flair, cockiness, and for better or worse, keeps his hands at his sides.
While I’d advise against keeping your hands below your belt, it didn’t matter for Thompson tonight — he was elusive.
The first professional bout of the evening featured Kevin Rooney Jr (1-0, 155lbs) take on Elmer Vera (0-1, 151 ½lbs). Rooney is the son of famous trainer Kevin Rooney, who is most notable for training Mike Tyson at his peak.
Vera came out swinging right from the opening bell. He aggressively worked Rooney into the ropes and occasionally landed some flush shots around Rooney’s guard. Halfway through the round, with his back against the ropes, Rooney landed a flush left hook onto Vera’s chin, stunning him. This turned the tide of the fight, and Rooney became the aggressor. A right by Rooney continued to keep Vera on the retreat. Vera was landing some punches of his own, but did not have the same power in his punches while going backwards.
As the ten second mark came, both fighters threw flurries hoping to make a lasting impact on their opponent. It was Rooney who landed the last shot. At the exact moment when the bell rang, Rooney landed a right hand right on the button, knocking Vera down. The crowd went wild, and Vera was unable to beat the ten count. Rooney was credited with a first round knockout at 3:00 of the first round.
Rooney also handles public relations for Joe Deoguardia’s Star Boxing, and was required to get back to his duties immediately following the bout.–Arben Paloka
He won on all three judge’s scorecards, 40-36.
Thompson improves his record to 8-0, 5 KOs, while LaCrete suffers his first professional defeat and falls to 4-1-2, 3 KOs.
SERRANO IN CO-FEATURE ON ESPN’S “FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS” JULY 15TH AT ROSELAND BALLROOM
On July 15th, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing presents the much anticipated jr. middleweight showdown between, long-time welterweight contender, and former world title challenger, Delvin Rodriguez (25-5-2, 14KO’s) and red-hot contender Pawel “Raging Bull” Wolak (29-1, 19KO’s) at the Roseland Ballroom, in New York City. The show, being shown live on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights”, will open with Philadelphia’s undefeated welterweight prospect, Raymond “Tito” Serrano (15-0, 8KO’s) taking on NY State Welterweight Champion, Daniel “The Hudson Valley Kid” Sostre (11-3-1, 4KO’s) in a ten round match-up.
“From top to bottom this is going to be a great card,” stated Joe DeGuardia, President and CEO of Star Boxing. “In the main event we have two exciting contenders going toe-to-toe in what promises to be an all-out war, with the winner emerging as a serious title contender to any of the champions in the jr. middleweight division. In the co-feature we are showcasing one of our brightest up and coming stars in Raymond. We have promoted Raymond since almost day one of his career, and have seen him grown and mature not only inside, but outside of the ring. He is very focused and determined, and if he continues on this path, we foresee him becoming the next Puerto Rican star in the near future.”
Serrano, who turned pro at just 18-years of age, gained national attention when he traveled to LA in 2009 to serve as a lead sparring partner for Manny Pacquiao, before Pacquiao’s 2nd round annihilation of Ricky Hatton.
Serrano, who is two fights removed from his career best victory; an impressive decision over Ghana’s reigning International Boxing Association Intercontinental welterweight titleist, Ayi Bruce (19-3, 12KO’s); Serrano last appeared on ESPN in January of 2010, when he scored a dominating eight round decision over Ronald Warrior (13-2-1 at the time). It was the second appearance for the Philadelphian on ESPN, as he had previously won a six round decision over 12-1 Jay Krupp in March of 2009.
Serrano, who has lived in Philadelphia his entire life, moved his training camp a few months ago to his family’s native country of Puerto Rico. For the past two months Serrano has been training at the Wilfredo Gomez Boxing gym, under the watchful eye of new trainer, Felix Pagan Pintor. Pintor is the trainer of former long-time world champion, Ivan Calderon. The move in training camps is something that has Serrano extremely focused, and pleased.
“This was a great opportunity for me to be able to train with a world-class trainer like Felix,” stated Serrano. “Not only was it a great opportunity for me, but coming here to Puerto Rico was also very special to me, as both my father and mother came from here-it’s my heritage.”
Regarding the fight on July 15th, Serrano is eager to get back into the ring and continue on his quest towards boxing stardom.
“I’m really excited to get back into the ring and showcase my skills once again in the national spotlight on ESPN’s “Friday Night Fights”. The fight on July 15th is actually contracted at 142 lbs. It is the lightest I will have fought as a professional, and I feel great at this weight. I plan on putting on great performance, and encourage everyone to come out and show their support and watch me get my 16th victory on July 15th.”
Sostre should present a bit of test for the young Serrano. Sostre hasn’t lost since 2007, going 9-0-1, over that span, including four of those wins coming by knockout. Sostre, just like Serrano, is of Puerto Rican decent, but calls Highland in upstate New York home. Sostre won the NY State Welterweight Title in 2009, and has successfully defended the title three times since.
