Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions and Warriors Boxing, can be purchased at the Armory at http://ArmoryMN.com/ and through Ticketmaster.
The fighters were joined on the press conference stage by Cuban great and former two-division world champion Joel Casamayor. Here is what the fighters had to say Thursday from The Armory in Minneapolis:
ERISLANDY LARA
“Training has been really good. We’re strong and I just wish Alvarez luck. We changed things up in our training and are back with Ismael Salas now. Alvarez is about to find out how hard we’ve worked.
“I think after the sixth round, you will see all the training that I did and the game plan that we have, start to break him down. After that, the knockout is going to come.
“My goal has been to get back to the top of the division. I’ve been at the top of the division all of these years and regaining a title is huge. It’s part of my history and my legacy. I’m super excited to be back in another big fight.
“I’m just focused on getting my title back. I want to look spectacular in this main event Saturday night on a big stage. Then I can move on to the biggest fights in the world.
“Going back to my original pro coach Ismael Salas has been great. Ronnie Shields is a great trainer and we had a great run together, I just had to change atmosphere. I’m very comfortable in Las Vegas. The sparring was perfect and we’re ready to rock.
“I come well prepared for this fight. The fight with Canelo was a long time ago, so now I’m just looking forward and toward being in bigger fights.”
RAMON ALVAREZ
“I’m not worried about what Lara’s mindset is. I’m prepared and ready to go. I’m here to write my own story as I’ve been doing by working hard since day one.
“What happened between my brother and Lara was years ago and you can’t change history. I’m only focused on what I have to do.
“We had a very good preparation for this fight. It’s a big fight for both of us. We’ve been completely focused on what’s in front of us.
“I don’t put too much thought into Lara’s last two fights not being wins. He’s changed his mentality and attitude and he’s fighting and not boxing as much as he did before. I think that shows that he still has a lot left in the tank to give.
“I’ve prepared very hard and I can only show it in the ring with my performance and my fists. We can both talk, but on Saturday night it will all be decided.
“I’m not just thinking about making history, but I will make history on Saturday night. The Alvarez brothers are going to make more history for Mexico when I win this title.”
SEBASTIAN FUNDORA
“When I come to fight at different venues I’m able to block everything out and just focus on the fight. But I do have some fans here in Minneapolis and I’m pretty sure they like me here since it’s my third time fighting here. It helps builds up my confidence a little bit more.
“The only adjustment we made for this fight was for the southpaw stance of Clark. I’ve fought tall guys before. My last opponent was 6’1”. So this won’t be much of a change for me.
“We’ll see what Clark comes with on Saturday. We’ll be prepared to box from the outside but also adjust depending how he fights me. I work hard to be an all-around fighter.
“I’m just excited to keep fighting on this stage and displaying my skills for everyone. I’m only focused on getting better and I believe fights like this will show what we’ve worked on.
“People look at my height, but I can fight on the inside too. I think people expect me to box but showing all that I can do gives people even more to worry about.”
JAMONTAY CLARK
“I don’t think too much about his height. This is a big opportunity and a new start for me. We’re going to pull off the upset Saturday night.
“I sparred with a lot of tall guys including some heavyweights, so I’m all the way ready for this fight. I have a good jab and I’m going to use it a lot in this fight.
“I think I fight better against taller opponents. I don’t think he’s going to be able to out box me or fight me on the inside. I feel that I have all the advantages. He can take it wherever he wants to go.
“I see my loss as a lesson. We learned from it and we’re here now. It’s a blessing. I’m going to keep showing my heart and my hunger.
“This win is going to mean everything to me on Saturday night. I’m calling it my new beginning and it starts with this fight.”
FRANK SANCHEZ
“I want people to know that there’s going to be a new Cuban heavyweight champion. I’m going to put a show on and everyone can see it on Saturday night.
“My team has made adjustments and we’re ready to fight for 10 rounds my first time as a pro. If it was a 12 round fight, I’d be ready for that as well.
“I’ve made some technical changes that will make it easier for me to go the whole distance and go into deep waters.
“My opponent is experienced and it’s another chance for me to display my skills. I’m definitely going for the knockout and a big statement.”
VICTOR BISBAL
“This is a fight that I’ve been waiting for. I’ve turned down other fights for a chance like this and I’m going to take advantage. My plan is to end Saturday night with a victory.
“I know that the Cubans are always great fighters and they have great training. He’s powerful and experienced, but at the end of the day, I know what he’s brining into the ring.
“There’s a good chance this fight ends in a knockout but I’ll be prepared to go the distance and win every round if I have to.”

MINNEAPOLIS (August 28, 2019) – Before they battle for the WBA Super Welterweight title this Saturday night, former world champion Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara and Ramon “El Inocente” Alvarez traded words on “PBC Face to Face” and previewed their showdown that will headline FOX PBC Fight Night and on FOX Deportes from The Armory in Minneapolis.
Catch the replay of “PBC Face to Face” tomorrow, Thursday August 28 at 11:30 a.m. ET and Friday, August 29 at 2 p.m. ET on FS2.
After an extended title run that ended with him as the longest reigning 154-pound champion, Lara is highly motivated on his quest to recapture his place in the division and erase the memory of his narrow decision defeat to Jarrett Hurd in 2018’s Fight of the Year.
“I came and I achieved almost everything that I have asked of myself,” said Lara. “I was world champion for many years and the most important thing is that now I feel very happy because they gave me another chance for the world title and to be crowned again.
“I’ve always been ready to be champion again. There have been some bad decisions from the judges, but I’ve always been ready to be champion again.”
One of those close and controversial decisions in Lara’s career came against Ramon Alvarez’s brother, middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez in 2014. The two combatants this Saturday night exchanged words on if that 2014 fight could play into their title fight.
“I have nothing against this man,” said Lara. “This is a business. We are going to present the best of ourselves. But I will work very hard. I’m going to be honest with you, as I sit here facing you in front of the camera, I am going to work very hard at my camp to knock you out. Okay? I’m coming to knock you out and we’re going to work hard for that.
“To win this fight is to turn the page. If the opportunity comes to fight with your brother again, we fight again. I am ready to fight with your brother.”
“He will not be facing my brother, nor do I think he will face him again,” said Alvarez. “He should focus now on what is coming. I’m what is coming.”
Alvarez is hoping for an opportunity to distinguish himself from his brother and score the biggest win of his pro career that dates back to 2008. He enters this fight the winner of four of his last five contests, with his only defeat in that stretch coming to former champion Brandon Rios in 2018.
“I will work to make things very clear to Lara that I am not my brother and that this fight will not be the same,” said Alvarez. “This fight has nothing to do with controversies. I think I have a different style to show and I’m going to show it this night.
“This is everything for me. To make my own legacy. My own path and show I got here with nobody’s help. I think we’ve shown to the world and the public that I have been advancing and winning, and I’ve been winning these opportunities and I will take advantage of them.”
After his Fight of the Year against Hurd in 2018, Lara engaged in another exciting action bout in March against Brian Castano, a title fight that eventually ended in a draw. With Alvarez expected to fight aggressively on Saturday, Lara believes another high octane bout is on the horizon.
“If the boxer is a guy who advances and pressures, I’m obligated to work with him,” said Lara. “I expect on August 31, Alvarez will come with the same anxious hunger and give a great show. So for the people will be watching, it’ll be very good.”
This will be Alvarez’s biggest opportunity of his career, a chance to not only win a world title, but grab a career-defining win against an elite former champion.
“I chose Lara because he’s a great fighter,” said Alvarez. “Because I think it’s our opportunity to demonstrate to the world what I have. Who I am. I think that of all the matchups, the best fight is with Lara. So, I chose him to give the people a spectacular show. I think that’s what we’ll do.”
The two fighters also traded words about their shared strategy not watch video of their opponents’ past fight prior to stepping in the ring.
“When they told me about the fight with Ramon, I had never seen you fight,” said Lara. “I do not look. I do not like to see your game plan. In Cuba, I didn’t have the chance to see the boxers when we left the country. I am not used to watching video of boxers. I have never really seen you fight. I’m going to prepare hard for the fight and I will be well focused on you on August 31. Because I come to win. I do not come to play.”
“I believe that all my opponents, all fighters, get to know each other better in the ring,” said Alvarez. “Maybe you can see someone’s video, but you don’t really know how it’ll be on that night in the ring. One has to work and prepare for everything.
“You want to be ready that night and be ready for what they give you and for what may come new or what may not come new. Because there are fighters that can evolve and can bring out new things. Some fighters always fight the same and there are fighters who don’t. You have to be prepared for everything.”
Both fighters believe that all of the motivations will add up to a great fight for the fans, with a good chance of an explosive finish that determines who walks away with the title.
“From what I can say and guarantee August 31 is that Erislandy Lara comes out with his hands raised,” said Lara. “I’m going to work hard. We will work hard. It is a very important fight my career and for my family. I will work hard for the knockout. In case I can’t, we’ll look for Plan B, to win all rounds. But I’m going to focus very hard to work for the knockout.”
“For me, the fight will end with a knockout because it is a high voltage fight,” said Alvarez. “So we’ll work very hard to give that surprise. I’m going to work for 12 rounds. “

On this training camp:
“Everything is going great out here in Las Vegas as I wrap up camp for my title fight. The sparring partners really pushed me to my limits, and I know mentally that I’m fully prepared for this fight. Everything…my timing, my stamina, my mental fortitude, it’s all on point right now.”

I’m going into this fight with the mindset to dominate and score a knockout.”
On training with Ismael Salas:
“Training with Salas has brought back some good memories as he was my coach when I first turned professional. We are working on a lot of fundamentals with a few twists. Salas and I have sharpened up all my tools and I’m taking this fight very seriously. We have a great game plan in place.”
On fighting for the vacant WBA Super Welterweight title:
“I going to reclaim my status as the best fighter in the super welterweight division. Winning the WBA world title on Saturday will be the biggest step yet in getting back there. After I win this belt, I’m going to defend it against all the top contenders and champions they put in front of me.”
On fighting in the main event on FOX and FOX Deportes:

MINNEAPOLIS (July 11, 2019) – Former world champion Erislandy “The American Dream” Lara looks to get one step closer to returning to the world championship ranks when he battles Ramon Alvarez in a 12-round bout for the Interim WBA Super Welterweight title in the primetime main event of FOX PBC Fight Night on FOX and FOX Deportes Saturday, August 31 from The Armory in Minneapolis.
In the co-feature, former world champions Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin and Minneapolis-native Caleb “Golden” Truax will settle their unfinished business in a rematch as they again meet in an IBF Super Middleweight Title eliminator. In the TV opener, a pair of sensational young super welterweights collide as Sebastian “The Towering Inferno” Fundora takes on Jamontay “The Quiet Assassin” Clark in an eight or 10-round attraction.
Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions and Warriors Boxing, go on sale Saturday, July 13 and can be purchased at the Armory at http://ArmoryMN.com/ and through Ticketmaster.
“This is a fantastic lineup of high-stakes matchups coming to FOX and FOX Deportes on August 31 and one that should deliver once again for the fans at The Armory in Minneapolis,” said Leon Margules, President of Warriors Boxing. “Each show has gotten bigger at bigger at The Armory, and this will be the biggest event yet. Erislandy Lara is a household name in the sport and he will look to make a statement against Ramon Alvarez that he’s still amongst the best at 154-pounds. With the rematch between Peter Quillin and Minnesota’s-own Caleb Truax set for the co-main event, there will be an electric atmosphere once again to spur these fighters to give their best performances.”
Lara (25-3-3, 14 KOs) was the longest reigning 154-pound world champion before he lost a tough split-decision to Jarrett Hurd in a title unification match in 2018 that was the unanimous “Fight of the Year”. Lara returned to the ring in March as he battled Brian Castano to an exciting draw in another narrow fight that could have gone Lara’s way. This showdown against Alvarez can put Lara back in position reclaim the top spot in the position that he once owned.
The slick southpaw who was born in Guantanamo, Cuba and now lives in Houston has faced off against some of the most accomplished boxers at 154-pounds, including champions Saul Alvarez and Austin Trout. Lara reigned for four years after becoming the full world champion in 2014 and leading up to the fight against Hurd.
“I’m very excited to be headlining another great PBC event, this time on FOX and FOX Deportes,” said Lara. “This fight against Ramon Alvarez is personal for me, as I have history with the Alvarez family. Expect another great fight and a spectacular performance. I can’t wait to perform at this tremendous venue in Minneapolis. Don’t miss this fight, because I’m going for the knockout.”
The 32-year-old Alvarez (28-7-3, 16 KOs) is the older brother of middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and will be fighting for just the second time in the U.S. In his first fight in the U.S. last November, the fighter from Guadalajara, Mexico lost to former world champion Brandon Rios. He bounced back from that loss with a decision victory over Jose Carlos Paz in his last fight on April 6.
“I am very excited for this opportunity to fight for a chance at the world title,” said Alvarez. “I’ve worked hard my whole career for a fight like this and I’m going to take advantage. My brother beat Lara a few years back and I’m going to be the next Alvarez to beat Lara.”
Quillin (34-1-1, 23 KOs) thought he was on his way to a victory when he met Truax in their first fight on April 13 in an FS1 PBC Fight Night main event. He had taken the first two rounds on all three judges’ scorecards before the action was halted when a deep cut over Truax’s right eye, caused by an accidental head butt, brought an end to the fight and resulted in a no-decision.
The 36-year-old Quillin, who was born in Chicago and now lives in Brooklyn, heads back to Truax’s hometown looking to secure his world title shot at super middleweight. Quillin is a former world champion at 160-pounds, having won a middleweight title against Hassan N’Dam in 2012 before defending it successfully three times.
“I’m going to finish what I started this time,” said Quillin. “I’m treating this like any other fight and working hard to put on my best performance August 31. I was in control of the first fight and ready to go for it. I’ll be ready again for a dominant statement when we get back in the ring.”
The 35-year-old Truax (30-4-2, 19 KOs) said post fight that he had planned to wear Quillin down in the later rounds of their April clash that was cut short. He will have the opportunity to implement his plan and earn a shot at becoming a two-time world champion in front of his hometown crowd on August 31.
Truax went to England and upset James DeGale for the IBF title by majority decision in one of 2017’s biggest upsets. He lost the title in a close unanimous decision in the rematch in 2018. A former college football standout from St. Michael, Minnesota, Truax turned pro in 2007 and has faced some of the best boxers at middleweight and super middleweight in his career, including Quillin, DeGale, Daniel Jacobs and Anthony Dirrell.
“I’m ecstatic to have the opportunity to run it back against Peter Quillin at home again at The Armory,” said Truax. “The ending of the first fight was a huge buzzkill to what had shaped up to be a great night. We obviously have unfinished business and I am again confident I will get the job done.”
The 6-foot-6 Fundora (13-0, 9 KOs) has begun to display tremendous power and has stopped his last five opponents inside of the distance. The 21-year-old southpaw from Coachella, California typically has a height and reach advantage over most of his opponents and makes the most of it. His last two fights have seen him knockout previously unbeaten fighters in Hector Manuel Zepeda in June and Donnie Marshall in February on FOX.
“I’m very focused right now on training hard, taking it day-by-day and giving a great performance on August 31,” said Fundora. “I’m preparing for an experienced fighter and a good chess match. This is one of the tallest guys I’ve fought as a pro, plus he’s a southpaw. I’m ready for a challenge and following my team’s guidance to be at my best.”
The 24-year-old Clark (14-1, 7 KOs) suffered the only loss of his pro career when he dropped a unanimous decision to Jeison Rosario at The Armory in Minneapolis on August 24. The Cincinnati-native bounced back from that loss with a unanimous decision victory over then unbeaten Vernon Brown in his last fight on March 24. He returns to The Armory for the tallest order of his career against Fundora, with the winner set to shoot up the 154-pound rankings.
“I’m feeling really strong right now and ready to show the new Jamontay Clark on August 31,” said Clark. “I’m going to show everyone how the shorter fighter can out box a taller opponent. I know he’s got length and throws a lot of punches, but I’ll be ready for everything he brings. This is the start of a new beginning. I’m bringing the pressure and pain for this one.”
