Atlantic City, N.J. September 26, 2023 – The Atlantic City Boxing Hall of Fame (ACBHOF) proudly announces the roster of special guests attending the 7th Annual Awards & Induction Weekend, held from Friday, September 29th to Sunday, October 1st, 2023, at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City. The guest list features notable boxing figures such as: Roberto Duran, Michael Spinks, James Toney, Vinny Paz, Gerry Cooney, Ray Mercer, Tim Witherspoon, Kelly Pavlik, Lamon Brewster, Mark “Too Sharp” Johnson, Junior Jones, Reggie Johnson, Mark Breland, Sharmba Mitchell, Eva Jones-Young, John Scully, Michael Olajide, Iran Barkley, Michael Nunn, Danny “Little Red” Lopez, Jeff Chandler, Montell Griffin, Yaqui Lopez, Al Cole, Kali Reis, Hector Camacho Jr., Rodney Moore, Kendall Holt, Dave Tiberi, Nate Miller and William Joppy, to name a few.

On Saturday, September 30th, the Fight Fan Experience & Boxing Exhibits at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City will be open from 11:00am – 1:00pm

The highlight of the weekend is the Red-Carpet Formal Awards & Induction Ceremony, taking place on Saturday night inside the Sound Waves Theater. Attendees will enjoy a unique opportunity to mix and mingle with other boxing luminaries and special VIP guests, as well as honor all who helped put Atlantic City on the boxing map. The Pre-VIP Cocktail Reception will begin at 5:00pm, and it leads into the Official Awards & Induction Program from 7:00pm – 9:00pm. After the Awards Ceremony, guests with VIP tickets will have the chance to experience the Post-VIP Reception, which includes a bonus fight watch party for Canelo Alverez vs. Jermell Charlo

FORMER HEAVYWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION RAY MERCER TO BE SPECIAL VIP GUEST FOR ALBERTO ‘EXPLOSIVO’ MACHADO VS. ANDREW ‘EL CHANGO’ CANCIO BOXING EVENT


INDIO, CALIF. (Jan. 9, 2019): Former heavyweight world champion Ray Mercer will be the special VIP guest for the boxing event headlined by the 12-round battle between Alberto “Explosivo” Machado (21-0, 17 KOs) and Andrew “El Chango” Cancio (19-4-2, 14 KOs) for the WBA Super Featherweight World Title. The event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019 at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif. and will be streamed live on DAZN – which is just $9.99 per month after a one-month free trial.

Mercer is a native of Jacksonville, Florida who earned a gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. The following year Mercer began his professional career by fighting an impressive 12 times. Eventually, Mercer earned a world title opportunity and defeated Francesco Damiani for the WBO Heavyweight World Title. Mercer defended his title once against Tommy “The Duke” Morrison but lost the title in a tough fight against Larry “The Easton Assasin” Holmes. Mercer continued participating in fights against the likes of Lennox “The Lion” Lewis, Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield, Wladimir “Dr. Steelhammer” Klitschko and Shannon “The Cannon” Briggs in a professional career that lasted 20 years.

Mercer will be in attendance for this event to meet fans, sign autographs and take pictures inside the Fantasy Springs Special Events Center. The meet-and-greet is open to the public with the purchase of a ticket to the event.

In the night’s co-feature, Rey Vargas (32-0, 22 KOs) will put his WBC Super Bantamweight World Championship on the line against Franklin Manzanilla (18-4, 17 KOs) in a 12-round battle.

Joseph “JoJo” Diaz Jr. (27-1, 14 KOs) of South El Monte, Calif. will return in a 10-round super featherweight battle against Charles Huerta (20-5, 12 KOs) of Paramount, Calif.

Genaro “El Conde” Gamez (8-0, 5 KOs) will battle against Ivan “Striker” Delgado (13-1-2, 6 KOs) in an eight-round lightweight battle between a current Golden Boy prospect and an ex-Golden Boy fighter.

Oscar Duarte (15-0-1, 10 KOs) of Parral, Mexico will participate in a 10-round fight in the lightweight division.

Azat “Crazy A” Hovhannisyan (15-3, 12 KOs) of Los Angeles, Calif. will compete in a 10-round super bantamweight fight.

Ferdinand “Lucky Boy” Kerobyan (11-0, 6 KOs) of North Hollywood, Calif. will return in an eight-round super welterweight battle.

Hometown hero Rommel Caballero (4-0, 3 KOs) of Coachella, Calif. will open the night of action in a six-round super featherweight battle.

Machado vs. Cancio is a 12-round fight for the WBA Super Featherweight World Title presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Miguel Cotto Promotions. NEWARK, NJ (August 22, 2011)—On Wednesday night September 14th at the Beautiful Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, Gulfstream Boxing and Gabe LaConte will present a night of world class boxing that has just been enhanced by the announcement that “Irish” Micky Ward and former Heavyweight champion “Merciless” Ray Mercer will be special guests in attendance.

In the main event, Michael Torres (13-2, 7 KO’s) of Newark, NJ will take on Mark Alexander in a ten round Jr. Welterweight fight for the New Jersey title.


Ward was regarded as one of the mist action filled fighters of the last quarter century as he consistently was in fight of the year candidates and fought everybody and anybody.

He finished his career with a record of 38-13 with twenty-seven knockouts and is most remembered for his trilogy with Arturo Gatti and a classic war with Emanuel Augustsus.

Ward has one of the most fascinating stories of any boxers. The story of Ward was made into an Academy Award nominated film: THE FIGHTER


Mercer was a 1988 Olympic Gold Medal winner who compiled a record of 36-7-1 with twenty-six knockouts, won the WBO Heavyweight title with a ninth round stoppage over Francesco Damiani. He defended the title with a five round destruction over Tommy Morrison.

Mercer also challenged former world champions Larry Holmes, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, Wladimir Klitshcko and Shannon Briggs.

Mercer also holds a win over former world champion Tim Witherspoon.

Aside from Torres and Alexander, the rest of the card is as follows:

Carlos Vinan (10-9-4, 2 KO’s) of Newark, NJ will take on Wanzell Ellison (4-0, 3 KO’s) of Newark, NJ in a sox round Lightweight bout.

In a six round Cruiserweight bout, Max Alexander (14-5-2, 2 KO’s) of Camden, NJ will take on William Bailey (10-20-2, 5 KO’s) of Chesapeake, VA

Thomas LaManna (4-0, 3 KO’s) of Millville, NJ will take on an opponent to be named in a four round bout for the BAM Youth Jr. Middleweight title.

Popular Welterweight, Vinny O’Brien (2-1, 2 KO’s) of East Hanover, NJ will take on an opponent to be named in a four round bout.

In a found battle of Newark based Middleweights, Eddie Edmonds (2-1-2, 1 KO) takes on Thomas Baldwin (2-0-1, 1 KO)

In a four round Lightweight fight, Tyrone Luckey (4-1, 4 KO’s) of Marlboro, NJ will take part in a four round bout against an opponent to be named.

In a four round Heavyweight bout, Tyabb Beale (4-3, 1 KO) of Newark, NJ will battle Taffo Asongwed (2-8-7) of Montreal, Canada
