I felt a lot more comfortable in the second and I was able to time Buelvas and anticipate which way he would be leaning. I saw the opening and I took it.”

Ruben Torres Faces Toughest Challenge of his Career on Friday Night

ORANGE, Calif. (July 24, 2019) – Rising lightweight Ruben Torres (9-0, 7 KOs) makes his headlining debut against veteran Ruben Tamayo (27-13-4, 18 KOs) this Friday, July 26, from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

Thompson Boxing caught up with Torres and got his take on facing the veteran Tamayo in his main event debut, how he handles life as a college student and full-time boxer and how he prepared for his first eight-round fight.

To access the promotional video for “New Blood,” please click here, or on the graphic above.

Your opponent, Ruben Tamayo, has been in with some big names. He fought for a world title against Jesus Cuellar. He went the distance against former world champion Jhonatan Romero, plus has seen a host of top prospects. On paper, he’s the toughest fighter you’ve faced so far. What are your thoughts on him?

“Tamayo is a seasoned veteran who still has a lot of fight left in him. I expect he’s going to give me a lot of different looks and different angles. I’ll be ready for any antics too. I’ll need to have my head on a swivel because he has a lot of experience to lean on.”

Friday’s “New Blood” main event will be the first for you as a headlining attraction. How are you approaching this next step in your career?

“It’s a different type of pressure because all eyes are on you to perform. That’s the main difference. My promoter expects big things from me and I expect to deliver. In terms of training and mental preparation, it’s just another day at the office. My dedication to the sport is always there no matter who I’m fighting.”

This is your first fight at eight rounds and it is against a southpaw. What, if anything, did you do differently in training camp?

“We stressed being patient. I can’t focus on one punch or thinking about a knockout. I sparred 10 rounds to make sure my cardio is at the level it needs to be. I got some great sparring with lefties like Isaac Zarate and Anthony Sanchez, who is fighting on this card. Isaac was super helpful because he throws punches from odd angles. I also sparred with Michael Dutchover, one of my stablemates. He’s always tough and ready for anything.”

You initially went to college at San Francisco State, but transferred after one year to Cerritos College in the Los Angeles area. How are you managing your full-time education with your boxing career?

“It’s actually not as difficult as it seems because I’m in school year round. For instance, I’m taking a statistics class right now in the summer. That allows me to take less of a course load in the Fall or Spring, which opens up more time to train. I think managing both at the same time has helped me stick to a schedule and has led to a more organized lifestyle.”

Tickets for “New Blood” are priced at $40, $60, & $100 and are available for purchase at ThompsonBoxing.com, or by calling 714-935-0900.

In the six-round co-feature, lightweight Anthony Sanchez (9-0-1, 9 KOs) of Long Beach, Calif. battles James Early (3-3) of Washington, DC.

All fights will be stream live on TB Presents: New Blood via our Facebook page, YouTube channel and ThompsonBoxing.com. Beto Duran will handle blow-by-blow duties, while Doug Fischer provides expert, color commentary.

Promising Lightweight Ruben Torres Makes Headlining Debut Friday, July 26

ORANGE, Calif. (July 19, 2019) – Rising lightweight Ruben Torres (9-0, 7 KOs) marks a milestone in his young career when he makes his headlining debut against veteran Ruben Tamayo (27-13-4, 18 KOs) one week from today on Friday, July 26, from the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, Calif.

The unbeaten prospect, one of a handful of high ceiling talents signed by Thompson Boxing in recent years, is coming off his most impressive performance, a dominating points win against the previously undefeated George Acosta in May.

“The fights are starting to get tougher now,” said Torres, who turned professional two years ago. “Tamayo is a solid veteran that’s been in some tough fights with a lot of quality boxers. He’s going to want to test me early.”

Adding intrigue to the eight-round “New Blood” showcase fight is Tamayo’s southpaw stance and tall frame. Torres, 21, usually enjoys a considerable reach advantage as he stands nearly six feet tall, but Tamayo is nearly as rangy as the Los Angeles native.

“Every fight presents different challenges,” said Torres, who is managed and trained by Danny Zamora. “I know I’m young, but I’ve sparred with a lot of different types of fighters. I’ve sparred with Danny Roman [unified world champion] who has the best mix of intelligence and skill. I’ve sparred heavier guys and plenty of lefties too. I’m not concerned with what he might do because I know I’ll be able to control the fight on my terms.”

Torres, who began boxing at age nine, started his career with five straight knockout wins. Since then, he’s been able to refine his skills in an attempt to become a complete fighter.

“My focus has been trying to fight smarter,” said Torres, who played football and basketball in high school. “You can’t overwhelm every opponent with just talent. I need to be able to think my way out of trouble and adjust to things as they happen.”

In other action, junior middleweight Leo Ruiz (4-0, 2 KOs) of San Bernardino, Calif. will face an opponent to be named later (four-rounds).

Top featherweight prospect Jose Tito Sanchez (3-0, 2 KOs) of Cathedral City, Calif. faces Luis Montellano (1-5-2, 1 KO) of Tijuana, Mexico in a fight set at four-rounds.

Opening “New Blood” is junior lightweight Chris Crowley (0-0-1), who will be looking for his first professional win against Braulio Avila (2-3) of Mexico City, Mexico (four-rounds).

All fights will be stream live on TB Presents: New Blood via our Facebook page, YouTube channel and ThompsonBoxing.com. Beto Duran will handle blow-by-blow duties, while Doug Fischer provides expert, color commentary.

The livestream starts at 8:00 p.m. PT / 11:00 p.m. ET.
