Ryan Garcia scores dominant decision over Barrios

By Norm Frauenheim

LAS VEGAS –For one night, there were no doubts about Ryan Garcia.

He eliminated them with a disciplined, thorough decision over Mario Barrios Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena.

Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs), often known for wild controversy, simply performed, a boxer trying to redeem the considerable talent in his skillset. He did that, dominating the scorecards – 119-108, 120-107 and 118-109.

Barrios (29-3-2, 18 KOs) never had a chance, mostly because Garcia never lost control.

Along the way, Garcia picked up his first world title, the World Boxing Council welterweight belt.

He also reconnected with his dad, Henry, who was back in his corner. Garcia wore dad’s first name, stitched onto the beltline of his red trunks.

He also put himself in line for bigger fights, perhaps a sequel in a grudge match with Devin Haney. There’s also Shakur Stevenson, who has quickly emerged as a pound-for-pound contender. Stevenson was at ringside. Sure enough, Garcia called him out after the scores were announced. He still knows when and how to deliver a line.

There were no complaints, except for maybe one.

“To be honest, I should have got the knockout,’’ Garcia said.

He didn’t, perhaps, because defense is the only weapon in Barrios’ skillset. He’s careful, but now he’s also an ex-champion

It didn’t take long for Garcia to display just how fast and powerful his hands are. Not long after David Benavidez’ young son, Anthony, welcomed him into the ring with a fast flurry of his own punches, Garcia went to work. But it began with a surprise

He’s known for a lethal left. But he opened with a right that put Barrios down just seconds after opening bell.

Barrios kept his poise. He got up, patience instead of panic in his eyes. Those eyes, however, also had to be filled suddenly with some unexpected concern.

Barrios had to be as wary of the right as much as that feared left. It confronted Barrios with some double-edged danger. Power on one side and diversionary on the other.

It was meant, perhaps, to set Barrios up for a finishing blow. But the defending champion from San Antonio proved to be tougher than perhaps Garcia expected. He withstood what Garcia threw with either hand and from almost any angle.

Still, there was a toll. From round-to-round, it became increasingly evident. Garcia punches and stubborn pressure began to wear down Barrios. He remained upright in trough the remaining eleven rounds.

But there were moments when his balance looked shaky. Barrios’ attempts at landing his best punch, a counter, began to dwindle as he kept his distance, perhaps because he didn’t want to step inside and within the range of the destructive power in both of Garcia’s hands.

It was a tactic. But Barrios couldn’t win that way. It allowed Garcia to stand outside, often with his hands down, as he fired from distance, almost sniper-like. Again and again, he scored enroute to the fist win on what might be redemption.

Russell survives, scores decision over Hiraoka

It was a fight for survival, or at least a punishing exhibition in how to prevail. Gary Antuanne Russell. won. Andy Hiraoka lost.

To the winner, there were mostly bruises. Russell’s resilience and early energy guaranteed victory. But the defending World Boxing Association’s junior-welterweight champion (19-1, 17 KOs)  suffered mightily in the tenth round because of an ugly low blow, thrown inadvertently but right on target.

Hiraoka (24-1, 19 KOs) was penalized a point. But it didn”t matter. He lost on all three cards — 117-110 and 116-111 twice. In the Japanese junior-welterweight’s first loss, he won over the fans. The gathering crowd for Ryan Garcia-Mario Barrios at T- Mobile Arena cheered him and booed Russell when the scores were announced.

Hiraoka was fighting just a couple of days after a long flight from Japan. He was delayed by VISA problems. Early on, he looked stiff and tentative, almost as if he was suffering from jet lag. If he was , however, he shook it off in the middle rounds, That’s when he began to land big lefts and thundering body shots.

As the fight went on, it began to look as if jet lag might be contagious. Russell looked tired. In the end, however, he had scored often enough in the early round to survive.

Martin, Albright fight to wild draw

Anybody for a rematch?

It sounds as if everybody is, including  Frank Martin and Nahir Albright who set the stage for one with a wild draw Saturday on a card featuring Ryan Garcia-Mario Barrios at T–Mobile Arena.

Through eight rounds, Martin (19-1-1, 13 KOs), a Detroit junior-welterweight, appeared to hold a slight edge. He dictated pace. He landed more solid shots. In the ninth, the lefthander rocked Albright (17-2-1, 7 KOs), of Philadelphia.

In the tenth, however. Albright attacked, capturing the momentum and badly hurting Martin with a head-spinning combination of ;punches. Martin stumbled, then desperately held on and held himself up just enough to avoid defeat.

In the end, it was 95-95 on all three scorecards.

“Should we re-run it?” Martin asked the fans.

The crowd roared yes.

Melikuziev Stops Agbeko in 7

Bektemir Melikuziev stopped Sena Agbeko in round seven of their 10-round super middleweight bout,

In round four, Melikuziev was cut around the right eye from a clash of heads. Agbeko was cut on his forehead

In round seven, Melikuziev wobbled Agbeko with a right hook and then was dropped with a straight left. Agbeko was badly hurt and ate another straight left and the fight was stopped at 2:58.

Melikuziev is now 17-1 with 11 knockouts. Agbeko is 29-5.

Amari Jones dominates, scores stoppage

It started with a counter hook. It ended in a beatdown.

From start to end, it was all Amari Jones (16-0. 14 KOs), a middleweight from Oakland, CA, who delivered a perfectly-executed hook that put Luis Arias down onto his rear and sliding across the canvas Saturday on the Ryan Garcia-Mario Barrios card.

Arias (22-7-1, 11 KOs), of Las Vegas, got up from the shot, but never really covered from the damaging impact. He looked hurt. He moved around the ring  in evident fatigue. In the fourth, he was down again. The ringside physician took one look at him and ended it.  Before the fifth, he was finished.

Uppercut thunder keeps Alakel unbeaten

Mohammed Alakel is unbeaten because of an uppercut.

David Calabro (5-2, 3 KOs) couldn’t elude it. It landed once, leaving him with a bloodied nose. It landed again, this time landing on his midsection with a shot that echoed throughout an empty Mobile Arena Saturday afternoon. Both put Calabro, of Aston PA,  on the canvas, both within a few moments in the second round.

Calabro had seen enough. So had the referee, who ended it at 2:17 of the second in a TKO victory for Alakel (8-0, 2 KOs) of Riyadh.

First Bell: Hitchins withdraws from title defense versus Duarte as Garcia-Barrios card gets off to slow start

The show opened with empty seats, news that the co-main event was off the card and Joshua Edwards.

A few fans had just reached their seats at T-Mobile Arena when it was reported that junior-welterweight Richardson Hitchins withdrew from his title defense Saturday against Oscar Duarte on the Ryan Garcia-Mario Barrios card because of an undisclosed illness. Delay and dull followed.

Edwards, a former Olympic heavyweight, appeared to have the power to eliminate the dull. But there was no stoppage. Edwards, a perfect five knockouts in five fights before the bout, could never land anything solid against Canadian Brandon Colantonio (7-3, 1 KO). Instead, Edwards settled for his first scorecard win, a unanimous decision.

Garcia, Barrios make weight on a day when Mayweather makes plans

By Norm Frauenheim

LAS VEGAS – The weigh-in was staged on a day when nothing else was.

Ryan Garcia, known to miss weight, was a half-pound lighter than the 147-pound mandatory and Mario Barrios was at the welterweight max Friday just as boxing’s familiar chaos descended all over again.

There’s redemption, and maybe Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs) gets some along with his first real title Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in a DAZN-streamed fight.

There’s respect, and maybe Barrios (29-2-2, 18 KOs) gains some by retaining the World Boxing Council’s green belt after keeping it twice with a couple of unconvincing draws.

From redeem to retain, there’s an R-word for just about everything in boxing. The only missing one is retirement. There’s no such thing. Prizefighters are like the tide. They keep coming back.

As Garcia and Barrios stepped off the scale and then indulged in the trashing-talking, non-blinking stare-down ritual, Floyd Mayweather, now more Sr. than Jr., was announcing a comeback.

Who knows if it really happens – and there are reasons to be skeptical. If it does, however, maybe the 30-year-old Barrios or the 27-year-old Garcia are in his future. Mayweather will always get closer to social security than he will his prime. He’ll be 49 next Tuesday (Feb. 24).

Who knows if Mayweather needs the money or the attention or both. Whatever the motivation, he becomes a legendary name that younger fighters – a Garcia or a Barrios – might one day want to have on their resume.

One way to become a legend is to beat one. Mayweather is surely that, although his plan for a comeback risks his 50-0 sanctioned record.

A loss to a face in the game’s emerging generation – again a Garcia or a Barrios – is a risk to Mayweather’s carefully-calculated claim on being an all-time great.

There’s a lot of talk that Mayweather’s comeback plan will include a rematch of his revenue record-setting victory over Manny Pacquiao. On Friday, at least, it was impossible not to note that Barrios fought to a controversial draw in July with Pacquiao in his last fight.

In announcing his comeback plan, Mayweather said he would fight his next sanctioned bout after a reported exhibition with Mike Tyson this spring. He’s also engaged in a looming court battle, a lawsuit against Showtime for $340 million.

Meanwhile, no specifics – date, place and network – have ever been announced about the speculated Mayweather-Tyson show. It’s fair to be as skeptical about that as it is to wonder whether we’ll ever see his comeback really happen. At 49, things change.

The body doesn’talways cooperate. Ask Bernard Hopkins, who went from an ageless wonder until he got stopped, knocked out of the ring by Joe Smith in 2016. Hopkins was 51. His body finally said no mas.

For now, however, Mayweather says he has contract, deal with CSI Sports/FIGHT SPORTS for a comeback career, post Tyson.

“I still have what it takes to set more records in the sport of boxing,” Mayweather said in a written statement.

More records, maybe more revenue too, But there’s another R-word: Regret. Without retirement, that’s often all that’s left.

‘THE RING: HIGH STAKES’ MARIO BARRIOS VS. RYAN GARCIA PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

LAS VEGAS, NV, February 19, 2026 – Today, against the backdrop of T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV, reigning World Champion Mario Barrios (29-2, 18 KOs) and Ryan Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs) took to the stage along with their teams ahead of their enormous clash in ‘The Ring: High Stakes,’ for the former’s WBC Welterweight Championship title. The high-powered February 21 bout is streaming live worldwide exclusively on DAZN.

Representing their Mexican-American heritages, the two fighters will undoubtedly have their speed and power on display while Barrios looks to cement his status as WBC Welterweight Champion, of which he’ll have successfully defended for the fifth time. On the other hand, Garcia aims to silence his doubters with a win, solidifying his position within the sport by securing a world title in a brand new division.

On the undercard, an exciting Super Lightweight bout pits Richardson Hitchins (20-0, 8 KOs) against Oscar Duarte (30-2-1, 23 KOs) in a matchup that will see the winner take ownership of Hitchins’ IBF Super Lightweight title. American Gary Antuanne Russell (18-1, 17 KOs) will also look to fend off Japan’s Andy Hiraoka (24-0, 19 KOs) in defense of his WBA Super Lightweight title. Kicking off the undercard, Frank Martin (19-1, 13 KOs) and Nahir Albright (17-2, 7 KOs) are set to battle it out in a Super Lightweight bout, while Bektemir Melikuziev (16-1, 10 KOs) and Sena Agbeko (29-4, 23 KOs) face off in a Super Middleweight battle.

Please see below for the latest from the fighters and their teams ahead of the highly anticipated bout:

Mario Barrios

On Ryan Garcia getting a lot of attention this fight…

“None of it bothers me. I’m the champion for a reason. I’m not a talker when it comes to all this, but every time I fight I leave it all in the ring.”

On testing Ryan Garcia…

“I want to make him uncomfortable and exploit his weaknesses every round.”

On if Joe Goossen’s knowledge of Ryan helped him train…

“I don’t think you need a personal relationship to know how to get an edge over him [Ryan Garcia].”

Ryan Garcia

On what he thinks Mario Barrios will bring on Saturday night…

“There’s not a lot I haven’t seen in the sport of boxing. You never really know what you’re going to get until you step into the ring. For me, I’m just preparing myself as best as I possibly can. So, we just have to wait and see.”

On where he’s at mentally and physically…

“I could do a lot of talking and say I’ve prepared the best I can. You can just look at me and see the shape that I’m in and how I look and have your own opinion on it.”

On Henry Garcia being his trainer again…

“It feels like old times. It feels good to be back with my dad. Technically, we are undefeated together and we’re going to continue the streak.”

On why the world title is important for his father…

“For this championship, it’s going to make my dad’s life. I’m going to hold it with honor and pride. You’re going to see the start of a whole new rise of the King Ryan empire.”

On if Joe Goossen is an advantage for him or Mario Barrios..

“It’s an advantage for me. I know how he’s training and I know how to train even better, because I’ve trained exactly the same with Joe. Joe knows how mean I can be, and come Saturday night, I’m going to be just that.”

Richardson Hitchins

On why he’s predicting a knockout…

“If I fought the same opponents he [Oscar Duarte] fought, I would have knocked them out, too. I’ve never been knocked out in my entire boxing career. I’ve never touched the canvas ever. He’s not going to be the guy to do that.”

On Oscar Duarte saying he’s a basic fighter..

“As far as Oscar saying I’m a basic fighter, if you look at my resume, every guy that I fought nobody has done to them what I’ve done to them. This guy has been spoonfed his whole career. When he gets in front of me, I’ll show him there’s levels to this and that I’m far from a basic fighter.”

Oscar Duarte

On how he sees this fight ending…

“I’m not only doing this for me. I’m doing this for my team and the people of Mexico.”

On what he has to do to beat Hitchins…

“I’m going to apply pressure and come at him like a train.”

On if he’s being overlooked going into this fight…

“I definitely think they’re underestimating me. I know what I bring to the ring. I know that I’m hungry, and I want that world title…I want that championship. On Saturday, I’m coming not only for [Richardson] Hitchins, but anyone else that they put in front of me.”

On why there’s nothing special about Richardson Hitchins…

“Richardson Hitchins is a basic fighter, but I’m ready. I’ve been training very hard this camp, not only physically, mentally, too. I’m ready for my title.”

Gary Antuanne Russell

On getting this fight…

“I’m ready for it and feeling great. I’ll do what I normally do – show up and show out. Hopefully, the concessions have some popcorn so the fans can enjoy the show.”

On his first title defense against Andy Hiraoka…

“Hopefully, he shows up. I won’t overlook him, but I want to be a true champion, and to do that, you need adversity. I’m prepared.”

On what he thinks the biggest difference was in his last fight against Alberto Puello…

“I took my foot off the gas and felt like I was up on the scorecard, so I changed my approach. I’m more mad at myself than the decision, but I won’t let that happen again.”

On if this fight will go to a decision…

“It depends – I don’t kiss and tell.”

Frank Martin

On how different he feels moving up in weight…

“I feel a lot stronger at 140 pounds…it’s the perfect weight for me. I feel a lot more comfortable.”

On if he believes Nahir Albright will fight or run in the ring…

“We’ll see. He might have to move around a lot. I’m going to beat him. Our styles clash, and it’ll be a good fight.”

Nahir Albright

On how he’s feeling heading into a big fight against Frank Martin…

“I feel great, and I’m excited. So grateful to be here.”

On what kind of fight he’s expecting on Saturday night…

“I’m expecting war and nothing less.”

On what the key is to beating Frank Martin…

“Just being myself and showing the world what I already know.”

Bektemir Melikuziev

On what he wants to show on Saturday night…

“This is a great opportunity for me to showcase my skills. Nothing but respect to my opponent [Sena Agbeko], and I’m looking forward to a great fight.”

On hearing Sena Agbeko say he intends to ‘bully the bully…’

“I’m good with that. We’ll see in the ring.”

Sena Agbeko

On how to bully the ‘Bek the Bully…

“We’re going to look to deal with everything that he can possibly put forward. The real question is going to be whether he can deal with what I’m going to bring to the table. I guess we’ll have to wait until Saturday night to find out.”

On his confidence going into Saturday night…

“I’ve never shied away from a fight. I’m beating fighters that are very tough competition. I come from a country with a long line of champions: Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey – who Oscar De La Hoya fought. It’s definitely going to be a firefight. He goes by the name, ‘bully.’ My plan for the fight is to ‘bully the bully.’”

Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO, Golden Boy

On Mario Barrios and Ryan Garcia in the main event…

“This is a great matchup, but I like Ryan’s chances because of what I see in his eyes and what I smell in the air. It’s going to be a war. When I last saw Ryan. This is a fight where that he’s been waiting for all his life. I have to give it to him – I love Ryan’s chances.”

On the depth of ‘The Ring: High Stakes’ card…

“This is a stacked championship card, and I can’t wait to see our Golden Boys take the next step to greatness. Duarte is one of those fighters who keeps evolving, and even Ryan Garcia says he is the ‘hardest puncher he’s ever faced.”

“What is there to say about Bek the Bully? He’s in tough with Agbeko – a man who’s been in the ring with top contenders, but we believe Bek is ready for the moment and ready to deliver a victory.”

“This card is top to bottom one of the best cards I’ve seen. It’s always great to see a stacked card like this on DAZN.”

Keith Connolly, Connolly Boxing

On the growth he’s seen from Richardson Hitchins…

“When I signed him two and a half years ago I said, ‘you have pound-for-pound talent.’ I’ll stick by my word, in the next year or two, he’ll be in the top ten pound-for-pound list. We want to fight guys like Devin Haney…but his talents are endless and he has no ceiling. When all is said and done, he could go down as one of the best all-time greats.”

Rick Reeno, CEO, RIng Magazine

On the main event…

“Both of these guys have had some ups and downs, but they’re both hungry and trying to make a statement. When you have two Mexican fighters looking to do that, it’s guaranteed fireworks. I expect a very exciting fight and the talking is almost done.”

On his thoughts on the entirety of ‘The Ring: High Stakes’ card…

“This is an outstanding undercard with three world title fights…some of which could serve as a main event on their own. Richardson Hitchins wants all the smoke and steps into the ring with Oscar Duarte, but Oscar has heart and he comes to fight. Of course, Richardson wants to bet on the knockout. However, don’t blink at Gary Antuanne Russell and Andy Hiraoka – neither one of them wants to go the distance. Ever since Frank Martin entered the junior welterweight division they now call him the ‘KO Kid.’ [Nahir] Albright knows how to upset the odds, though, and he’s confident. ‘Bek the Bully’ [Melikuziev] and [Sena] Agbeko will be bombs away, too.”

Henry Garcia, Garcia Trainer

On being Ryan’s trainer again…

“We have the winning team. We have Ryan in tip top shape and we have a good team. I’ve heard reporters and trainers say, ‘Which Ryan is going to show up?’ I gave you the answer and we’re going to win this.”

Joe Goossen, Barrios Trainer

On how training camp has gone…

“Mario has been a model fighter in the gym during this training camp. He’s exceeded expectations and he’s tackled every assignment I’ve given him.”

On what he’s brought to Mario’s game…

“You don’t get to be champion of the world without a lot of talent. Sometimes when you have someone on the outside looking in, you’re going to find things that are meaningful. Those are the things we address: tightening the defense and making the offense more explosive than it already was.”

On how his knowledge of Ryan Garvia prepared Mario for this fight…

“I don’t really think that it served me a big advantage here, because you can just break the tape down. You have so many fights to look at. Working with Ryan for those three fights gave me a little insight, but I wouldn’t say it’s anything that’s going to be meaningful.”

MARIO BARRIOS TRAINING CAMP NOTES

LAS VEGAS, NV (February 16, 2026) – WBC welterweight world champion Mario “El Azteca” Barrios (29-2-2, 18 KOs) is entering the final stretch of training camp ahead of his highly anticipated 12-round title defense against Ryan Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs). The bout headlines The Ring: High Stakes on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, promoted by TGB Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions. The event will be available worldwide on DAZN, either as part of a subscription or as a pay-per-view add-on.

A CAMP BUILT ON EXPERIENCE AND SHARPENED EDGE

Barrios has been locked in at training camp since December of 2025, under the guidance of new trainer, Hall of Fame coach, Joe Goossen, whose legendary career continues to shape championship fighters. Barrios emphasized that Goossen’s attention to detail and championship mentality have been crucial in preparing for a high-risk, high-reward fight.

“Working with Joe Goossen has brought a whole new level to my game,” said Barrios. “His experience, the way he sees the ring, it’s been a huge advantage. Every session, he’s pushing me to refine my strengths and fix every small mistake. I’ve grown more as a fighter in this camp and I’m ready to bring a war to Ryan Garcia.”

RESPECT FOR GARCIA, BUT NO DOUBT IN THE OUTCOME

On his upcoming challenge against the explosive Ryan Garcia, Barrios remains confident yet respectful.

“I give Ryan credit—he’s fast, he’s dangerous, and he’s hungry,” Barrios stated. “But I’ve been in deep waters before, and I know how to stay composed and break my opponents down. This fight is about proving that I’m not just a champion—I’m one of the best in the world at 147. Garcia has power, but I’ve seen it all in the ring. I’m ready to go through fire to keep what’s mine.”

PROUDLY DEFENDING THE GREEN BELT

As the reigning WBC welterweight world champion, Mario Barrios is fully embracing the responsibility—and the pressure—that comes with wearing the green and gold belt. After being elevated to full champion status in 2024, following statement victories over Yordenis Ugas and Fabian Maidana as the Interim titleholder, Barrios has continued to solidify his place at the top of the 147-pound division. With momentum on his side and the confidence of a champion, Barrios has made it clear he has no intention of relinquishing his title—especially not in front of a packed arena under the bright lights of Las Vegas.

“Defending this title means everything to me,” said Barrios. “I fought my way back to the top, and now that I’m champion, this belt is staying home with me. Every round, every second, I’ll be fighting like a man whose entire spirit is in that ring—like everything I am is on the line.”

FIGHTING FOR LEGACY AND HOMETOWN PRIDE

Representing San Antonio, Texas, Barrios knows this bout is more than just a title defense—it’s a career-defining moment.

?“This is bigger than just another fight—this is another opportunity to cement my legacy,” Barrios concluded. “I’m representing my city, my family, and every person who’s believed in me since day one. When I step into that ring, I carry San Antonio on my back—and I’m leaving with my hand raised. A win on February 21 isn’t just another victory—it’s a message to the entire boxing world, I’m here to stay.”

Who’s Fooling Who? Garcia and Barrios fighting for an answer

By Norm Frauenheim

From outrage to silly, Ryan Garcia’s many sides have shown up on either side of the ropes and lots of other places.

There are so many roles, it’s hard to know what’s genuine, who’s real. Garcia has a mask for every opening bell. In a craft dictated by feints, it often works.

Along the way, he’s made fools out of opponents, fans, media and regulators.

Sometimes, he just makes a fool out of himself

That sets up a new stage. This time, however, who’s-fooling-who is more than just a question. It’s a theme, the inescapable drama, for his return next Saturday (July 21) against Mario Barrios in a DAZN-streamed bout from Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.

The Ring, the promotional entity, calls the fight “High Stakes”, a fair enough marketing that suggests Devin Haney will be there for a rematch if Garcia prevails.

He’s expected to. He’s favored, but the odds (minus 225) are close, in part because of Garcia’s scorecard loss to Rolly Romero last May on a messy night at New York’s Times Square.

Garcia performed more like a guy trying to wave down a vacant cab than an elite fighter trying to land a punch in a fight that could have restored credibility badly damaged in a notorious New York night against Haney.

Eventually, a beat-down of Haney was ruled a no-contest because Garcia tested positive. Sometimes, masking doesn’t work. In his first fight – opportunity — since then, Garcia just looked disinterested.

Just another disguise, or a real look at what, who Garcia has become? Guess here: Narrow odds are also a fair reflection of the public perception of Garcia. Fans don’t know what to make of him, either.

High Stakes, perhaps, says more about him — his identity — than his future. If he fails against Barrios, his career is in crisis.

If he loses to Barrios, forget Haney, who might move on to a speculated shot at newly-minted junior-welterweight and pound-for-pound contender Shakur Stevenson. For this fight, fans will watch, knowing that only Garcia’s future is at stake.

Is that fair to Barrios? No. But fair and boxing, like jumbo and shrimp, don’t belong in the same sentence. Boxing is always a working definition for oxymoron.

Barrios, a nice guy in a notorious workplace, seems to understand his role in the looming show. He’s the B-side, which is the same bit-player role he had in a controversial draw with middle-aged celebrity Manny Pacquiao in July.

Garcia was there for that one too, reportedly engaging in some extracurricular exchanges on the arena floor after Barrios escaped with the draw.

Seven months later, the two would meet in the ring. Who knew? In a news conference dominated by Garcia last month, Barrios watched the show and reviewed it simply with perhaps the only trash talk he’s ever delivered. He called Garcia a clown.

“Payaso,’’ the proud Mexican-American said of Garcia who arrived on-stage with T-shirts, insults and his own dancing girls, all with ring cards mocking the World Boxing Council.

There’s more than just Bozo in the Spanish definition of clown. It could mean buffoon. It also could mean mischief, which, of course, has been a Garcia specialty. Expect some more.

For Barrios, a clown is what he hopes to make out of Garcia, who has been pretty good at doing that all by himself. In the process, Barrios hopes to put together a performance worthy of a shot at Haney in what would be a welterweight title-unification fight.

For now, there are just questions about Barrios’ path to the WBC’s version of the 147-pound belt.

He was awarded the belt without throwing a punch after Terence Crawford moved up,  from welter to junior-middle for a victory over Israil Madrimov

Then, Barrios kept the title with two draws, the last one with Pacquiao and the first one against Abel Ramos.

Ramos, resilient and tireless, battled his way back and seemed to dominate Barrios throughout the final rounds on the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul show in November 2024.

Barros retained the belt, but didn’t answer gathering questions with a rematch. Ramos, of Casa Grande south of Phoenix, earned a shot, yet never got one.

More than a year later, Ramos makes his first appearance since then. Seven days after Garcia-Barrios, Ramos faces prospect Tahmir Smalls on the Emanuel Navarrete-Eduardo “Sugar” Nunez Feb. 28 at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, AZ.

Who’s fooling who? Maybe only time can answer that one. Garcia-Barrios is a fight for one.

Barrios vs Garcia Undercard Delivers More World Championship Showdowns on a Stacked Card Ahead of the Blockbuster Main Event in Vegas

Las Vegas is gearing up for an explosive night of boxing on February 21 at T-Mobile Arena, as
Barrios vs Garcia is backed by an undercard loaded with world-title stakes and explosive matchups
across multiple divisions.

Leading the charge is a Junior Welterweight World Championship showdown between Brooklyn
standout Richardson Hitchins and Mexican powerhouse Oscar Duarte for the IBF crown. Hitchins
enters his title defense undefeated with a flawless 20-0 8KOs record, most recently stopping

former lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr in the eighth round in June 2025. Challenging
him is Mexican powerhouse Oscar Duarte (30?2?1, 23 KOs), a seasoned fighter who has bounced
back with a string of victories since his 2023 loss to headliner Ryan Garcia.

Former Olympian Gary Antuanne Russell (18-1, 17 KOs) makes the first defense of his WBA Super
Lightweight world title against Japan’s unbeaten Andy Hiraoka (24-0, 19 KOs). Russell’s only loss
came in a narrow 2024 decision loss to Alberto Puello, but he bounced back on March 1, 2025,
out-boxing Jose Valenzuela over 12 rounds to claim the title.

Hiraoka counters with a perfect record and a devastating KO rate, highlighted by a ninth-round
stoppage of former interim champion Ismael Barroso in September 2024 — a statement win that
confirmed him as one of the division’s top challengers.

Frank Martin (19?1, 13 KOs) and Nahir Albright (17?2, 7 KOs) collide in a super lightweight
showdown set to light up the ring. Martin has surged into title contention with statement wins,
including a fourth-round knockout of Rances Barthelemy in December 2025 and a stoppage of
Gervonta Davis in 2024 that announced him as a rising force in the division.

Albright, the Philadelphia native, comes off a hard-fought majority decision over Kelvin Davis in
June 2025 and brings big-fight experience, including a 2023 bout with Keyshawn Davis later ruled
a no contest.

Olympic silver medalist Bektemir Melikuziev (16-1, 10 KOs) squares off with veteran Sena Agbeko
(29-4, 23 KOs) in a Super Middleweight showdown. Melikuziev has turned as a must-watch force
at 168 pounds, proving he can thrive under pressure on the big stage. Agbeko, a seasoned
knockout fighter with 23 stoppages, brings experience and unpredictability, making this clash a
potential highlight of the night.

All of this explosive action leads to the blockbuster main event where Barrios and Garcia step into
the spotlight with championship ambitions on the line. With multiple title fights, rising stars and
proven punchers filling the card, February 21 at T-Mobile Arena is promises a can’t-miss night of
boxing, producing the kind of drama only fight night in Las Vegas can deliver.

Ringmaster: Ryan Garcia back on stage

By Norm Frauenheim

The props and plots were all there. So was Ryan Garcia.

Garcia, ever the showman, delivered Thursday with a gag bag full of punchlines, insults, mockery, T-shirts, ring-card girls and many more of the usual theatrics he’s been rehearsing for so long

He may have left the white horse in the barn this time. Maybe, some of the manure, too. But place and stage — Avalon Hollywood — hasn’t changed much since Garcia’s gallop into a formal news conference in 2024 turned into a wild ride and controversial crash against Devin Haney.

Once again, Garcia proved his wit is still as quick as his hands. Maybe quicker, although we’ll have to wait and see on that Feb. 21 against welterweight Mario Barrios at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.

Barrios, the World Boxing Council’s 147-pound champion, was part of the live-streamed show Thursday, of course. But Garcia has a way of turning everybody around him into a bit player. Barrios — a champion, but no celebrity — understood his role, his place among the extras.

“This is turning into a circus,’’ Barrios said during his turn at the podium at the newser for The Ring-promoted bout.

By then, Garcia had already turned it into his bully pulpit.

First, there was the story line, the plot that will be explored ad nauseam for the next month.

Barrios’ trainer is Joe Goossen, Garcia’s ex. After Goossen, there was Derrick James. Before Goossen, there was Eddy Reynoso. Hand wraps last longer. Now, Garcia’s dad, Henry is back in the corner he occupied early in his son’s pro career and throughout his amateur days.

On Thursday, dad warmed up the show for his son. He complained about Goossen, suggesting that he’s betraying his son.

“At first, I was taken a back,’’ said dad, who called Goossen’s move “disrespectful.’’

Then, it was Goossen’s turn. He conceded that his new role in the latest chapter of Garcia’s ongoing show was “awkward.”

But Goossen’s explanation was quickly interrupted by Garcia, who delivered a perfectly-timed counter.

From his seat next to the podium, Garcia cried that he was suffering from a broken heart. Jaws and noses get broken all the time in what Mike Tyson once called the hurt business. Not many hearts do, perhaps because there just aren’t many in the prize-fighting business.

“How could you, Joe?’’ Garcia said. “That’s messed up. I just can’t believe you’re doing this to me. That’s insane. You hurt my heart.

“It’s over. We’re done. I’m breaking up with you again. You just broke my heart. Just move on. You were being sweet, but I’m offended.

“It’s too late. I’m offended. I’m offended already. I’m hurt. All of that.”

Breaking Up Is Hard To Do. It’s a 1962 Neil Sedaka song not heard by anybody among fight fans in more than a half-century.  Garcia sounded as if he was humming a few of those forgotten lyrics. But the show, like the trainers, had to move on.

Garcia took the cue, reached into a bag at his feet and pulled out black T-shirts that said: I Am A Traitor. He threw one at Goossen. Goossen threw it back as though he was trying to throw a hook

At one point, Garcia raced backstage, chanting repeatedly that he loves the WBC. He returned to center stage with three ring-card girls, all waving WBC placards. Somewhere, Terence Crawford must be smiling.

In November, the World Boxing Council lifted a ban on Garcia, who is coming off a listless loss in May to Rolly Romero after the Haney bout was ruled a no-contest because of a positive PED test. The WBC had suspended him for racial slurs posted on social media. The move opened the way for him to fight Barrios.

“Last, but not least, I get to thank the WBC,’’ he said without saying he was sorry.

In the end, Garcia said whatever he wants. It wouldn’t have been much of a news conference if he hadn’t.

“I’m the ringmaster,’’ he said.

He’s that and more, said Barrios, who also showed he can deliver a quick counter.

“Payaso,’’ he said.

That’s Spanish for clown.

VIDEO: THE RING: HIGH STAKES | MARIO BARRIOS VS. RYAN GARCIA LAUNCH PRESS CONFERENCE

‘THE RING: HIGH STAKES’ MARIO BARRIOS VS. RYAN GARCIA PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

LOS ANGELES, CA, January 23, 2026 – Yesterday, at the Avalon Hollywood in Los Angeles, CA ahead of their highly-anticipated 12-round contest for the WBC Welterweight Championship title, reigning World Champion Mario Barrios (29-2, 18 KOs) and Ryan Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs) took to the stage to discuss their February 21 showdown, which will be streamed live worldwide exclusively on DAZN from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.

Barrios, who secured the WBC Welterweight World Championship more than two years ago after fending off prior challengers in Abel Ramos and former world champion Manny Pacquiao, will now look to put down Garcia, who is set to make his first world title appearance at 147-pounds. The former WBC Interim Lightweight Champion has previously faced numerous top-ranked fighters in the division and will look to add to his knockout total through his explosive power.

While the full fight card has yet to be revealed, below is what the fighters and their teams had to say ahead of the blockbuster bout:

Mario Barrios

On competing in ‘The Ring: High Stakes’

“Shoutout DAZN, Golden Boy, Tom Brown, and everyone from my PVC family. Everyone knows what I bring every time I step in the ring. They said that he’s [Ryan Garcia] focused, that we’re going to get a Ryan that’s 100%, and that makes me happy to hear. So when I whoop his a** on February 21 there will be no excuses. The boxing fans are going to get a great fight and it’s not a fight that you’ll want to miss.”

On if he places Ryan Garcia on the same level as Manny Pacquiao, Gervonta Davis, Keith Thurman

“Someone said that I rate him [Ryan Garcia] on that level, but he’s an opponent. We have to fight against him. We have to defend against him and that’s exactly what I’m going to do.”

On if Joe Goossen’s history with Ryan Garcia factored into his training decision

“No. The fact that Joe Goossen trained Ryan Garcia had nothing to do with it. The move to go with Joe was going to happen whether this fight happened or not. Me and my team just felt that we needed a change to get this last stretch with my career. That was the reason for the move with Joe. We’ve gotten familiar with him and his style and everything he has accomplished with his fighters. We’re going to have a good camp and look forward to February 21.”

On Ryan’s comment on the fight being bloody and physical

“Yes. It could be. Whether I’m cut, hurt, I get back up and keep fighting. I don’t know if he can say the same, but that’s something we’re going to see come fight night. He said we’re getting a Ryan that’s 100%. That’s exactly what I want.”

On being called the worst champion of today

“I don’t think much into it. I stay quiet, work, and do my job. Whether you like me or not, you’re going to see me on these big cards fighting in these big venues. That’s exactly why I am where I am. It’s been quite the journey, but I still have a lot to do. I’m just thankful and happy to be here.”

Ryan Garcia

On competing in ‘The Ring: High Stakes’

“I’m truly honored to be a part of this huge fight. This is how it’s supposed to be. I am super prepared for this fight and have been really focused. You can do a lot of talking, but at the end of the day, the fight is on February 21, and I’m ready to put a beating on somebody. I’m 154-pounds right now, so I’m ahead of schedule. Joe [Goossen] knows when I’m locked in, so he knows there’s going to be a real fight. My prediction is that there’s going to be a lot of cuts in this fight. One thing that we do know about Mario Barrios is he’s a very durable fighter, so he can come back the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th round and keep fighting even though he may be hurt. One thing I want to mention is they have three guys that used to train me, not just Joe. This man [Mario Barrios] called them The Avengers, but I call them traitors.”

On which version of Ryan Garcia we’re going to see this fight

“My energy speaks for itself. I try to tell people, when I’m quiet, not interested, that’s when you have to worry. When I’m on it, posting it, and excited about something, that’s when you have to be careful. At the end of the day, I know what I went through after the [Devin] Haney situation and it took a toll on me. They wanted me to try and force a fight and my performance showed. In order to be a great quarterback like Tom Brady, you have to forget what happened and focus on the next play. I have to go out and go grab that title. I’m hungry, I’m excited, and I’m ready to put on a show. I actually have to be way more careful fighting him because if I’m sleeping, he’ll beat my a**. I’m super locked in, and you’ll see the best version of myself.”

On not getting his third loss

“Two is cool, but three is too much. I don’t wanna get this third loss at all. He doesn’t want to get it. It’s debatable that he lost his last fight, but it was called a draw. But at the end of the day, we don’t want to lose and we’re both at this moment. That’s why I think this is a sleeper fight. Some people don’t think this is gonna be a good event. I think it is, and I predict that it’s gonna be very bloody. I can see a lot of cuts and grueling fighting.”

On Joe coaching Mario Barrios

“It hurt me when he didn’t show up after my Tank [Davis] loss. That was a pretty big defeat and I didn’t see him after the fight. Before that camp, he was pretty cool. We had a lot of great moments and that’s where you build a relationship with your coach. It shifted when a big money fight comes along and a lot of people are involved. I’m a little disappointed in his decision to go against me but that’s what fires me up.”

On how he visualizes the fight ending

“It’s just a great, grueling fight. We have a plan when we get to it. I can see a lot of outcomes, but the fight paints a picture of itself when you’re fighting, when it’s happening, when you’re moving. We’ll see when we get in the ring because we don’t know how somebody is going to show up come fight night.”

On if he thinks beating Mario Barrios would cement him and his dad as one of the best boxing father/son duos

“I told my dad, I’m dedicating this W to him. I really want to win this championship for him. I made that promise and commitment to be the best version of myself, and I’m showing him that we can do this. I’m grateful for my experiences with all the coaches I’ve had. I’ve had a lot of great memories and they’ve taught me a lot of stuff. Hopefully all the knowledge soaked in me and carries me through all these fights. I’m really blessed to be a part of this and I’m grateful.”

On the biggest lesson he’s learned since his last fight and the statement he’s trying to prove

“My body is not invincible. That’s something I learned for sure. Your body is a temple and you have to take care of it…it’s simple. Treat your body like a temple and everything else will start coming to you a little easier.”

Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO, Golden Boy

On being part of another major fight card in ‘The Ring: High Stakes’

“It’s really an honor to be a part of ‘The Ring: High Stakes.’ It’s an honor to be working with Ryan [Garcia] and [Mario] Barrios in this fight. This weight class – 147-pounds – you’re in the middle of a division where they’re hitting hard, they’re fast, they’re trying to knock each other out and it’s exciting. The 147-pound weight class is serious business. Watching Ryan right now puts a smile on my face because I think we’re going to see the old version of him that we’ve seen in the ring who is determined, strong and wants to go out there and knock their head off. Then you have Barrios who is the champion. He’s coming off the confidence in drawing with [Manny] Pacquiao, who is a legend. I’m really grateful and excited that we can do this again to promote the very best at the biggest stage.”

Rick Reeno, CEO, RIng Magazine

On the anticipation ahead of ‘The Ring: High Stakes’

“I want to thank everyone for supporting this event, The Ring: High Stakes – what can you say? WBC Welterweight champion, Mario Barrios and King Ry, Ryan Gracia, both of these guys have something to prove this year. They had some ups and downs last year, but they’re both young and at this stage of their careers neither one of them can afford a loss. That’s why the stakes are so high. They’ve both made adjustments in their careers, with their teams, and I know Mario wants to get a solidified victory to solidify himself as one of the top champions in the weight class. Ryan, in my opinion, is still the moneyman of the weight class, the name of the weight class and this event proves it. Back off his last fight, he’s part of the main event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, a major PPV card and a world title fight. Ryan’s following speaks for itself. I look forward to this fight and I think both of these guys are coming to bring it – they can’t afford a loss and it makes for a very anticipated match up.”

Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions

Opening Remarks

“Thank you Oscar. It’s great to be here. I want to thank Turki Alalshikh, Ring Magazine, Sela Promotions and our partners. This will be a tough and grueling fight. Both of these guys are gonna take some serious shots and they’re both going to take some serious punishment, which is what the fans want to see. Mario Barrios is just can’t miss TV. He loves to go to war and he’s always in action packed fights. Now that he’s training under the tutelage of hall of fame trainer Joe Goossen over at the famous Ten Goose Boxing Gym, I know that Joe’s gonna pull out all the stops on his gameplan for this fight. Mario is just an old school warrior. He’s never turned down an opponent, never turned down a fight. He’s been in the ring with legends like Manny Pacquiao, been on even terms for much of the fight with Tank Davis – a thrilling fight of the year candidate. He moved up to welterweight and took on a former unified world champ in Keith Thurman, so he has that elite experience against the best in the sport. Once again, I just want to thank everyone involved. We’ll see you out in Las Vegas, the fight capital of the world, on February 21. Thank you.”

Henry Garcia

On Joe Goossen training Mario Barrios

When I first found out that Joe Goossen was going to train Mario Barrios, I was taken aback. I was like, ‘What the heck is going on here? Why would a coach that trained my son all of a sudden turn around and train somebody else to go against my son?’ I find that very disrespectful and it just isn’t right. But then again, I remembered, he told me a while back that he’s done this in the past. He would train someone then later on he would go against them. Again, I don’t think it’s right, but maybe it’s something he has to prove. Maybe it’s just an ego thing. I also remember he told me specifically that when Ryan is 100%, no one can beat him. And I’m going to tell you this right now, Ryan is 100%. Come February 21, you’re going to see it. It’s going to be a great show and we’re here to win and take this title.”

On how it feels being his son’s head trainer

“I feel honored that my son has picked me to be his trainer. I’ve been with Ryan since day one when he was seven years old. My brother gave him his foundation, which I highly appreciate, until he was nine years old. Ryan obtained 15 national titles as an amateur. Then, when we turned pro, he secured 12 wins with 11 KOs. To come back from a cycle of journeys, I’m honored. I feel proud and I know my son more than anyone in this room including the coaches, which I do respect because they go through sacrifices and all that. But I know my son and come February 21, he’s going to be the Ryan I know and that I love.”

On if Joe Goossen’s knowledge of Ryan is going to help Mario on fight night

“I’ve always said that you can teach anyone anything, but there’s one thing that a coach cannot teach is how to take a punch from my son Ryan Garcia.”

Joe Goossen

On training with Mario Barrios

“This is a little bit of a difficult situation, but you know things change in boxing. I got a call from Mario and his people and they offered me the job. Of course, I said yes without a doubt – who wouldn’t want to train the welterweight champion of the world? But again, like I said, things can get a little awkward. I had a great time with Ryan and I know he’s gonna be in great shape. I know that. He always trains hard, but I have to tell you I think we got an early start on this camp with Mario. We started on December 1, I integrated him into my system and he took to it very well. We’re putting in a lot of rounds and thankfully we got great sparring. I just know both of these guys, and they both will be in great shape. I predict a classic fight. Ryan will bring 100%, like Henry [Garcia] said, and we’re looking to bring 120%. This is a pay-per-view fight and a lot of people should tune in, because it’s not going to be boring at all. Both guys will dish out a lot of punishment, but punishment will be taken, too. Nobody’s going to be messing around dancing around the ring, I can tell you that. That being said, we’re preparing for that type of fight, and I can’t wait to see us come out on top. That’s our goal. Why else would we be here but to win? I have to support my guy, and I’m here 120% for Mario Barrios…it’s business. It’s already exciting and they haven’t even done anything yet.”

On going against a former fighter he trained

“Is there an extra incentive for me? No. My incentive is always the same for every fight — for my fighter to win. The bottom line is I have nothing against any fighter I’ve ever gone against. I don’t go to bed at night thinking about revenge or anything of that sort. I go to bed thinking how I can better my guy that I’m training.”

On if he is bringing any knowledge into his training with Mario following prior training with Ryan

“Every trainer wants knowledge, but all you need to do is put on the tape. If you’re a discerning, fairly intelligent person – a trainer – you’re going to see what’s there, but that’s not always what presents itself on fight night. You have to be prepared for many different things and you have to be prepared for something you didn’t see as a threat previously. I acknowledge Ryan’s abilities – they’re great. I acknowledge that this man’s [Mario Barrios] the world champion for a reason. He’s got tremendous abilities. He’s fought some great guys, and it’ll be a great fight.”

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – January 12, 2026: HE Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of the General Entertainment Authority, today announced the blockbuster Welterweight showdown between the reigning World Champion Mario Barrios and dynamic powerhouse Ryan Garcia in a 12-round contest set to take place at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas on February 21.

ROLLY ROMERO MEDIA ROUNDTABLE QUOTES

LOS ANGELES – May 8, 2025 – Fresh off his dominating performance last Friday night, WBA Welterweight Champion Rolly Romero held a media roundtable in Los Angeles on Wednesday to discuss his title-winning triumph over Ryan Garcia and more.

Having now picked up titles at 135, 140 and 147 pounds, Romero stole the show in New York City by earning a unanimous decision over the betting favorite Garcia. Romero scored the highlight of the night by connecting on a pair of left hooks in round two that dropped Garcia and set the tone for the rest of the bout.

Romero rode that early knockdown and a consistent body attack to the victory, landing 45 of his 57 total punches landed to the body, according to CompuBox stats. He also showed impressive defensive prowess, limiting the usually explosive Garcia to just 18 power punches landed across the 12 rounds.

Romero also appeared on stage Wednesday and was recognized for his achievements before the start of the press conference for the May 31 PBC Championship Boxing on Prime Video event headlined by Caleb Plant vs. Armando Reséndiz and Jermall Charlo vs. Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna. Here is what Romero had to say Wednesday from The Mayan in Los Angeles:

ROLLY ROMERO

“I have two losses and they both came from big fights. Those losses haven’t derailed me from anything. They can’t slow me down. Every time you think I’m gone, I’m gonna come back again and again…These other guys are fighting for the money, but I fight for belts and for legacy.

“If Ryan wants to do a rematch we can do it. I don’t know if he’s mentally ready for a rematch and I know he has other obligations. I don’t know if people are too interested in seeing that other rematch, but if you have obligations, you should honor your obligations.

“I know Ryan too well. I knew exactly how he was gonna come and where he was gonna come. I think even he was surprised with how well I knew him.

“I neutralized his left hook. The second he threw one left hook, what happened? He got dropped and he never threw it again. The only reason he didn’t get knocked out is because he was fighting to survive.

“When I was fighting at 135, I really should have been at 140, and then when I was at 140, I really should have been at 147. I was calling out Errol Spence Jr. and wanted to skip 140. I should have been at 147 for a very long time. I think it’s apparent. I mean how do I move up in weight and get a lot faster and more explosive. You usually get slower when you move up in weight.

“You didn’t really see me have to box early on in my career, because I was flatlining people in the first few rounds.

“The jab to the body is the money punch to me. That punch will break down anyone little by little. I’ve dropped people with it.

“Ryan gave me his best. That was a focused Ryan Garcia. He didn’t do any of the stuff that he had done for his last night. Is anyone saying he wasn’t focused in camp? That’s because Ryan takes me seriously. He knows me.

“Anything regarding me being the face of boxing I agree with.”

Rolly Romero Upsets Ryan Garcia

Rolando Romero scored the biggest win of his career by winning a 12-round unanimous decision over Ryan Garcia in a welterweight fight outdoors at the famed Times Square in Midtown Manhattan in New York City.

In round two, Romero dropped Garcia with a hard double left hook on the chin. After that, Garcia really seemed to be listless and fought very timidly. Romero did just enough in every round by just coming forward more with foot pressure that any type of sustained punching.

Romero landed 57 of 280. Garcia was 66 of 210. Garcia & Romero 490 combined landed punches 3rd fewest in CompuBox history for a 12-round fight, surpassing Haney & Ramirez at 503

That was enough as Romero, 146.6 lbs of Las Vegas won by scores of 118-109 and 115-112 twice to raise his mark to 17-2. Garcia, 146.8 lbs of Victorville, CA is 24-2.

“Knockdowns always help,” said Romero (17-2, 13 KOs). “Ryan is a warrior. He got up, and he finished the fight. I’m just grateful for this opportunity.”

“Rolly fought a good fight,” said Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs). “He caught me early, no excuses. Congrats to him. He did a great job, and that’s that.”

“I think the whole year took a lot off my body physically and mentally,” said Garcia. “I’m thankful for the opportunity. Hats off to Rolly… I’m gonna go back to the drawing board, talk it over, and see what we do next.”

“I’m not even thinking about what’s next,” said Romero. “I think Devin and Ryan should get their rematch and make a big one.”

Devin Haney Decisions Ramirez in Lackluster fight

In a fight where very punches of significance landed, former undisputed champion Devin Haney won a 12-round unanimous decision over former unified world champion Jose Ramirez in a welterweights.

Haney landed 70 of 224 punhes. Ramirez was 40 of 279. Haney (229) & Ramiez (274) combined to thrown 503 punches.  4th fewest in a 12 round fight in CompuBox history. Ironically, Haney (214) & Ryan Garcia (285) combined to throw 499 punches- 3rd fewest in a 12-round fight in CompuBox 40-yr. history.

Haney, 143 lbs of Las Vegas won by scores of 119-108 twice and 118-110 and is now 32-0. Ramirez, 143,8 lbs of Avenal, CA is 29-3.

“I felt good going into the fight, and the game plan I worked on definitely showed,” said Haney. “I handicapped him. He couldn’t do anything in there.”

“Towards the middle of the fight I started to feel real comfortable, got his timing, and I picked him apart,” said Haney.

Teofimo Lopez Decisions Lopez; Retains Super Lightweight Title

Teofimo Lopez retained the WBO Super Lightweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over mandatory challenger Arnold Barboza Jr.

In round five, Lopez started to swell under his right eye. In round six, Lopez was cut under left eye.

Lopez landed 127 of 574 punches. Barboza was 71 of 428.

Lopez, 139.6 lbs of Brooklyn won by scores of 118-110 and 116-112 twice and is now 22-1. Barboza, 139.8 lbs of Long Beach, CA is 32-1.

“I’ve been telling myself this whole week that anything happening is happening for me and not against me,” said Lopez. “I felt great. I felt reborn.”

“We gave it our all, but this time, we came up short,” said Barboza. “Congratulations to Teofimo on a hard-fought victory. We’ll take this experience, learn from it, and come back stronger. The work continues. Maybe we can fight Ryan next, or Haney, or anyone that will give us an opportunity. For now, I’m going to enjoy some much-deserved time off with my family after eight months of training.”

“I’ve been at this weight for some time, and now I’ll talk to my team, and maybe I’ll move up in weight,” said Lopez. “You know me. I go after the tough challenges. I wanna see ‘Boots.’ I’m Dora The Explorer and I wanna see ‘Boots.’”

Tsutsumi Wins Pro Debut by Unanimous Decision

Reito Tsutsumi won his professional debut with a six-round unanimous decision over Levale Whittington in a super featherweight bout.

Tsutsumi landed 141 of 386 punches. Whittington was 65 of 331.

Tsutsumi, 128.8 lbs of Tokyo, JAP won by scores of 60-54 twice and 58-56 and is now 1-0. Whittington, 127.8 lbs of Chicago is 1-3-1.

Ryan Garcia

“I’m here to do my job, knock Rolly out and ride off into the sunset…I’m not worried about any sparring from eight years ago. I’m here to do a job, and that’s it…We’re not leaving it up to the judges, Rolly is getting put to sleep.”

“I’m excited to be back in New York after a historic event last time. It was so sweet, we had to do it again.”

“I don’t care about what Bill Haney has to say. He’s just trying to talk up his son. We all saw how that worked out for him last time.”

“I’m here living life. Everyone goes through their ups and downs. It’s about how you bounce back. I’m here to show people that you can bounce back from anything.”

Rolly Romero

“I’m gonna knock Ryan out and he can go have fun with Devin afterwards. I actually think Devin deserves the rematch with Ryan.”

Devin Haney

“Y’all can boo or y’all can cheer. It doesn’t matter. It’s all noise. When I dust Jose Ramirez off on Friday, I’m gonna get to Ryan after.”

“The talk is over. I get to Jose Ramirez on Friday and then everyone here knows who’s next.”

Jose Carlos Ramirez

“I’m thankful for the opportunity to showcase my talent in front of this amazing crowd in New York. Last time I was in New York, I became a world champion. So I’ve got a good feeling here in New York.”

“Where I’ve come from, it’s prepared me for things like this. Everything has prepared me for times like these. On May 2, I will be victorious.”

“I know he’s a very talented fighter. He’s a good fighter. But on Friday, May 2, I will beat Devin Haney. My best chapter is yet to come.”

Teofimo Lopez

“I’m just grateful and thankful to be here with everyone and show y’all the third version of Teofimo Lopez that you haven’t seen yet.”

“Get your pay-per-view on DAZN. Friday night. You don’t want to miss it. I’m the type of fighter who does everything and anything. I can’t wait to express that on Friday night.”

Arnold Barboza Jr.

“This is amazing. I’m here to ruin all of Teofimo’s plans…I just came from doing the same thing in Manchester. We’re here to show up and show out.”

“Teofimo is entertaining and him and his dad are selling the fight. All I have to do is sit back and get ready to fight.”

Reito Tsutsumi

“I want to make a big impact on everyone watching me on Friday night. I want to show who I am and make a name for myself.”

“Whittington has some experience as a pro, but I’m going to embrace my amateur experience. If I fight my fight, I’m going to be fine.”

“It’s easy for him to say whatever he wants up here, but he has to show up in the ring and prove it with actions.”

Levale Whittington

“Y’all are overlooking me. That’s cool and all. I don’t want people to expect me to win. But on Friday night, y’all are gonna see the best version of Levale Whittington.”

“I plan on shocking a lot of people and getting my hand raised by knockout or unanimous decision. If he comes in crazy, it’s gonna be an early night.”

James Gennari, Representing FDNY in the “Battle of the Badges”

“We love our boys in blue. I know he’s gonna bring it. I’m gonna bring it. You gotta have balls to do both of our jobs and to step into the ring. You don’t get a nose like this being in boring fights. It’s gonna be a fun fight for sure and I’m ready for it.”

“He’s beat every fireman that I know, but he hasn’t faced me yet.”

Joel Allen, Representing NYPD in the “Battle of the Badges”

“I’m blown away. This is like a childhood dream from 25 years ago. I came from the Police Athletic League ever since I was a kid and without that program I wouldn’t be a police officer. ‘Cops & Kids’ has made superstars in boxing and outside. That’s what I fight for and that’s where my heart is. I’m gonna put on for my city.”

Rick Reeno, COO of The Ring Magazine

“There’s only one word that could define this event, and that’s history. It’s never been done before and I don’t know if it will ever be done again.”

“Make no mistake, there are favorites and underdogs, but all of these underdogs are live dogs. Nothing is a foregone conclusion. Ryan, Devin and Teo could have taken easier fights, but they wanted tough fights and we put it all together.”

“This event is like a big beautiful cake, and we wanted to put the cherry on top, which is the professional debut of Japanese sensationReito Tsutsumi. I’ve followed him in the amateurs and he’s an unbelievable talent. Once he turned pro, the experts in Japan said he would be the next superstar of their country.”

Oscar De La Hoya, Golden Boy Promotions

“I thought I had seen it all in my 45 years of boxing, but I’ve never seen a ring in the middle of Times Square. This is history in the making. On Friday we’re proud to have our Golden Boy fighters headlining all three main events.”

Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport

“This is a completely unique event. The logistics that have gone behind this are quite remarkable. In the last seven days I think you’ve seen one of the most historic periods in world boxing…On Friday night and Saturday night, make sure you tune into DAZN PPV.”

Sean Michael Ham, Team Romero

“We’re not really here to do too much talking. We’re here for business and to do our talking in the ring. We’ll see you guys on Friday night. We’re here to shock the world.”

Bill Haney, Haney Promotions

“This will be a historic event. It’s iconic to be at Times Square. This is a great opportunity for Devin to come back and show the world what he’s really made of. You guys will witness greatness. That’s what you’re here for.”

Gardy Lopez, Top Rank Inc.

“On fight night, this is gonna be a new version of Teofimo Lopez that no one has ever seen. This isn’t the version that beat Lomachenko, or Josh Taylor, this is a new version that no one has seen. And once that mask comes off, he’s not gonna be a saint anymore.”

“FACEOFF: GARCIA VS. ROMERO” is now streaming across all DAZN’s platforms, offering an intense and revealing look inside the rivalry between two of boxing’s brightest stars ahead of a groundbreaking fight under the lights of Times Square.

Catch the rest of Garcia vs. Romero fight week events, which are all open to the public, daily at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT on the DAZN Boxing YouTube. Below is what the fighters had to say Tuesday from the Manhattan Center in New York City:

Ryan Garcia

“I retired Luke Campbell, I retired Javier Fortuna, and I’m about to retire Rolly and be done with these dudes. Whenever I get a feeling about retiring someone, I just know it. I know once I knock him out, he’s done.”

“I’m gonna take control of the fight right away. I have to control the ring. He’s not a better boxer than me, but he’s gonna try to do things to make me uncomfortable. Ring generalship is my best friend when I step into the ring.”

On pre-fight build-up with Rolly Romero

“Rolly is good at making people pay attention to what he says. You have to be used to what he does. I’m enjoying every moment of it.”

On trainer Derrick James

“Derrick’s style is all technique. He’s not worried about flash and that’s the perfect person for me. I’ve already got the speed and I’ve got the power that I can turn on. We’re like yin and yang, we’re the perfect combination.”

On his exchange with Devin and Bill Haney during the media workout

“His dad likes to talk a lot…that’s what got his son beat the first time. It is what it is. If he wants to do that again, we can run it.”

Rolly Romero

“I’m great. I’m happy right now. This is just another normal day for me…It’s a historic event in Times Square and I’m happy to be headlining. This is gonna be a legendary moment for all of boxing.”

“This fight was destined to happen. I called it. I knew it was gonna be at 147 pounds and be one of the biggest fights in boxing history. Look at this.”

On discussion of previous sparring sessions with Garcia

“We’re both tired of watching that. We’re two evolved new fighters. It doesn’t matter in the ring on Friday.”

On pre-fight talk of a Garcia vs. Haney rematch

“It has nothing to do with me. Whatever they wanna do has nothing to do with me.”

Devin Haney

“I’m so happy and excited to be back here under the bright lights. I can’t wait for Friday.”

“In boxing you have to prove yourself time in and time out, just like any other sport. LeBron has to prove himself again and again, and so do I.”

“Styles make fights. He does a lot of good things and a lot of bad things in there. It’s my job to go in there and handicap him of the good things he does and exploit the bad things.”

“This is a great fight on paper, but it’s a mismatch. Ramirez has a tailor-made style for me. I know he’s gonna put on the pressure. If he comes in stupid, then I will put him down.”

On a Ryan Garcia rematch

“Right now Ramirez is on my menu. Once I finish my breakfast, I’ll move on to my lunch…We all know what the people want to see. There’s unfinished business there. But I have to finish what’s in front of me first.”

Jose Carlos Ramirez

“I’m preparing for the best Devin Haney. That’s the guy I want to beat. I want that challenge. That’s what I got ready for and that’s why I pushed myself the way I did in training camp.”

“I feel good…having those extra four pounds have made the weight cut much easier. I’m hoping to show a new Jose Ramirez. I work hard and I want it to show.”

On his face-off exchange with Haney at Monday’s Grand Arrivals

“Yeah his team was saying that I looked a little thick, so I was showing them my six-pack. Then Devin told me I didn’t look thick anymore.”

Teofimo Lopez

“This is a blessing and a dream come true for all of us. We’re here to take over as always. It’s ‘The Takeover’ and we’re here to show off our skills.”

“I’m here to do my part. I’m gonna start it up for everyone and amp it up.”

“This is “FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves”, you saw Eubank and Benn go at it last Saturday. They did their thing. Anything could happen in Fatal Fury.”

Arnold Barboza Jr.

“It’s time to eat. And we’re starving. I’m ready to go.”

On his comfort with fighting in opponents’ home territory

“That comes from going on the road my last two fights. Going to the UK and having 15,000 fans booing me and turning me on, everything has been building toward this. This is the toughest opponent of my career, but we’re looking to show up and make it look good.”

On not facing off with Lopez at Monday’s Grand Arrivals

“We got the message that he wasn’t gonna do it, so I had to face off with my son. I had to face off with somebody.”

On being the underdog against Lopez

“They told me I’ve already messed up a few plans already and I’m looking to do it again Friday. I’m gonna keep this streak going.”

“I’m prepared for the best. I looked at all of Teofimo’s best fights. That’s what I’m ready for…I think Josh Taylor let Teofimo get too much confidence, and I’m not gonna let that happen. I’m gonna punch him in the mouth and see what happens.”

Here is what the fighters and their teams had to say during their grand arrivals:

Ryan Garcia

On the statement he wants to make following his yearlong layoff:

“I’m coming back with a bang. I’m not here to play any games come Friday night.  I’ve got a huge fight coming up next, so I have to take him as seriously as if I’m fighting Devin. We’re going to be prepared, 100%.”

On whether this current version of himself is the new Ryan Garcia:

“You’re just getting what you’re getting. I’m still going to bring that speed and power. It’s just what I do. I’m explosive, and I’m hungry. I feel the adrenaline right now, fight week. I’m feeling how I always feel: focused, ready to kill.”

On whether he plans to come for the knockout:

“Most definitely. I’m not coming for it, but when I throw, usually they go down. He’s going to be coming after me, I’ll be coming after him. It’s going to be a great night.”

On the fight and the Times Square experience:

“This has to be the biggest fight of my career. It’s a historic night, and it means everything. This is the biggest fight of my life.”

Rolly Romero

On his welterweight debut:

“I’m feeling like it’s about damn time. It’s long overdue.”

On his previous fights with Ryan Garcia:

“He got his a** beat twice and the third time’s a charm.”

On if he plans to go for the knockout:

“When have I ever not gone for a knockout? Every fight I’m in, I go for a knockout.”

Devin Haney

On what he’s looking to prove following last year’s fight with Ryan Garcia:

“I’m happy to be back in the ring. This is a dream come true. Allah is the perfect planner. I look to bring fireworks on May 2. I look to show the world a new-and-improved, better Devin Haney than before.”

On what he’s been doing following the year off:

“I had to go back to the drawing board and focus on the mistakes I was making. Like I said, I had to become a better version of myself, and I’m looking to go in there and show it on Friday.”

On his excitement level for a rematch with Ryan:

“My main focus right now is Jose Ramirez. He’s a former two-time champion. He’s coming, he’s bringing everything, and I look to handicap him and show him that I’m just on a whole different level, and then we can get to the Ryan Garcia fight.”

Jose Carlos Ramirez

On how excited he is to fight Devin Haney:

“Extremely excited. First and foremost, I’m thankful for the opportunity, but I owe it to myself to show up and move up into a bigger weight class. I think that’s going to do wonders for me.”

Teofimo Lopez

On the statement he wants to make and whether he’ll fight again at 140 lbs:

“We’re going to go out there and do what I have to do. I’m going to have fun and beat the brick out of this boy.”

Arnold Barboza Jr.

On his excitement level for the fight with Teofimo:

“I’m very excited, very excited to share the ring with Teofimo. He’s an awesome fighter, but I’m an awesome fighter, too. So, it’s gonna have some fireworks.”

Joel Allen

On his excitement for the fight and to represent the NYPD:

“I’m blown away. Wow, what a moment. I’m just trying to stay focused and not get caught up in the lights, but I’m very happy to be here. I look forward to making my brothers in blue proud.”

James Gennari

On the importance of scoring one against NYPD:

“It’s a classic matchup. NYPD versus FDNY is classic, and it never gets old. I’m trying to go for the win, so that’s the plan.”

On his fight training:

“Through hard work and dedication. I’d work a 24-hour shift and then go straight to the gym.”

Oscar De La Hoya

“We are very proud to be here in New York, the media capital of the world. We are excited that Golden Boy Promotions is a part of this excellent show. We have three amazing fighters on the card and once again, Golden Boy Promotions proves that we are the best at positioning our fighters to be in this situation, so thank you very much.”

Composed Ryan Garcia begins another fight to answer questions

By Norm Frauenheim

It was a different Ryan Gracia than the one who shocked, outraged and frightened throughout a long-running social-media ride to hell-and-back a year ago. He was composed, thoughtful. There was even a hint of humility. Was it real? Will it last?

Those are questions only Garcia can answer as he resumes a career interrupted by the craziness that surrounded his date with Devin Haney, a fight preceded by Garcia chugging a beer on the weigh-in scale and one that turned into a virtual accident. It’ll be exactly a year this Sunday, Easter Sunday, since a bout that  included a positive PED test, suspension, lawsuit, reported settlement and repeated denials. The hangover, framed by the questions, lingers.

There were no simple answers last April. There were none this April at a public workout in San Diego Thursday a few weeks before Garcia answers an opening bell for the first time in more than a year May 2 against Rollie Romero in Times Square, about eight miles of roadwork through New York traffic from the scene of his last ring appearance against Haney at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

Garcia, who is coming off a year-long suspension for testing positive for Ostarine, was calm. But will that prove to be only the calm before another storm? The answer to that one rests in what is about to transpire before a card that figures to get more attention for where it is than who is on it.

For Garcia, it’s a tuneup. For Haney, it is too. He’s scheduled to fight Jose Carlos Ramirez. Teofimo Lopez will also be there in a defense of his junior-welterweight title against Arnold Barboza Jr. Hopefully, the weather will include only punches and no rain.

“Looking to get the rust off,’’ Garcia said to a circle of reporters before a live-streamed workout at BXNG Club in Oceanside.

Looking to get some answers, too.

Garcia made some news Thursday, repeating that he had an interest in fighting welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis, the acknowledged best at 147 pounds today. He also mentioned Mario Barrios and Brian Norman.

“I’m excited, but do I want to fight somebody else that would make me feel more like a champion?’’ he said. “Whoever the champions are …any of those guys. I will win the word championship if I beat any of those guys.’’

But, mostly, the Friday night card — the first in a Cinco de Mayo triple-header  including Canelo Álvarez-William Scull Saturday in Saudi Arabia and Naoya Inoue-Ramon Cardenas Sunday at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena — is thought to be a steppingstone to a Garcia-Haney rematch, which is projected for a day in October. The planned sequel is full of immense potential to settle a lot of differences still there after Garcia’s three-knockdown beatdown of Haney in bout later changed to no-contest because of the PED positive.

“I want the Devin Haney rematch, 100 percent,’’ said Garcia, who has virtually disappeared from the wild social-media presence he occupied a year ago. “I need it and I’m going to do it for USADA this time. I want the Devin Haney rematch so bad. I really want it. There’s some personal bad blood there but it’s not going to overrule me but it’s got some extra oomph in there, you know, when you’re fighting and put it on him even more.

“Then you got Bill’s (Haney’s father and trainer) crazy antics, and he’s constantly talking nonstop, and that makes me want to put a whooping in a little bit more. This is an opportunity to do it again, and I think after that, I’ll put a stamp on that and move forward.”

Garcia’s mention of USADA — a drug-testing agency — is a reference to the Ostarine controversy. Garcia tested positive twice for the substance — an anabolic agent, according to drug testing and New York State Athletic Commission.

But he denied it after the fight. And he denied it again Thursday.

“I did a lot of things, but for me it was more mental,’’ Garcia said. “Everything was mental. It took a toll on my mentality, because I know I didn’t take steroids or anything like that.

“It was tough for me to overcome that, but throughout the year I got over it, re-focused myself, and got blessed with this opportunity.’’

This time, Garcia denies it without any of the angry histrionics that were there for weeks after the fight.  A year later, Gracia says it a matter-of-fact tone.

Still, it was an acknowledgement that Garcia knows what a lot of people are thinking. Hall of Famer and ringside analyst Roy Jones Jr, expressed it in an interview this week with AKHi TV, a You Tube boxing network. Jones gives a Haney a chance to win the rematch.

“If you (don’t) knock him out when you’re illegal, how you gonna beat him when you’re not illegal?’’ Jones is quoted as saying.

For Garcia, there’s only one opportunity. Only one answer. First, there’s Romero. Then, there’s the projected rematch.

“I felt that this is my chance to come back and show everybody I can really fight,” he said.

For one night only, New York’s iconic Times Square will be transformed into a world-class boxing venue, providing the perfect backdrop for Ring Magazine’s first American event, playing host to some of the biggest stars in the game.

The broadcast will be available worldwide exclusively on DAZN PPV over Cinco de Mayo weekend together for only $90 (pricing varies by market). Events can be purchased individually for $59.99, but the bundle offers fans a chance to experience boxing’s biggest weekend at unbeatable value. Those interested in the bundle are encouraged to purchase at the following link: https://www.dazn.com/en-US/p/boxing

Prior to the workout, this is what Garcia, trainer Derrick James, and Golden Boy Chairman & CEO, Oscar De La Hoya had to say ahead of the bout:

RYAN GARCIA:

On going from his Tijuana debut to Headlining Times Square

“To be honest, I didn’t even dream about it. It was not even a thought in my head. Times Square? I’m just happy to be part of history. It’s a big opportunity for me to do something amazing at a historic event. There’s a little added pressure, but this is what we do, this is why we’ve trained since we were young, for these super mega events. I’m blessed.”

On fighting for a world championship and his hunger for it

“As I grew up, I’m like, ‘it would be nice to get a championship under my belt,’ but I don’t want to say anyone can become a champion, but it’s pretty watered down at the moment. For me, quality opponents, how I perform, how I look, and how much money I’m making really determine how good of a fighter you are.”

“You’re called a prize fighter, but we’re fighting for a prize. It’s still in my heart to become a champion. I believe I’m fighting for a 147-pound championship, so I will be a world champion. I’m excited, but do I want to fight somebody else that would make me feel more like a champion? Whoever the champions are, Jaron Ennis, Brian Norman, Mario Barrios, any of those guys. I will win the world championship if I beat any of those guys.”

On never shying away from fights

“Yeah, 100 percent, that’s always how I’ve been. I feel like with my talent, any fight I’m in, no matter how good they are, I’m right there with anybody.”

On his antics vs Haney compared to Rolando

“You got to know that Devin is a much different fighter than Rolando. Rolando wouldn’t get offended by antics, he actually would love that. It’s a whole different situation. I got to be sharp the whole way through. He only throws bombs, that’s all he knows how to throw, so if I’m not sharp the whole way through, I could get caught and that’s not something I want to do so for me, it’s about having my technique right, and that’s what we’ve been working on just technique, making sure our hands get back, watching what he’s doing at all times, and we should do the job.”

On sparring with Rolly years ago…

“As I’ve matured, for me it’s just another fight. After the year layoff, it just so happened to be Rolando. I really just want to get sharp again and prepare for the next fight, but I can’t look past Rolando obviously. I’ll be looking to shake off some of the rust and get right for the next fight because I got a lot to prove with the Devin Haney rematch.”

On Devin Haney rematch…

“I want the Devin Haney rematch 100 percent. I need it and I’m going to do it for USADA this time. I want the Devin Haney rematch so bad. I really want it. There’s some personal bad blood there but it’s not going to overrule me but it’s got some extra oomph in there, you know, when you’re fighting and put it on him even more. Then you got Bill’s [Haney] crazy antics, and he’s constantly talking nonstop, and that makes me want to put a whooping in a little bit more. This is an opportunity to do it again, and I think after that, I’ll put a stamp on that and move forward.”

On his background…

“A lot of us, we don’t come from a rich background. A lot of boxers have to work from the dirt and get to the top, that’s the dream of a fighter. Most of us don’t have money. Why would you want to box if you got money? At the end of the day, I’m just that story of a young kid from a tough neighborhood, but when you have talent, you can make it anywhere, and if you work hard, you can reach the top. I think that’s what I’ve been proving, and no matter if I’m underestimated, which I am most of the time, my talent prevails, my hard work shows out, and that’s why I’m going to be ready to go again on May 2.”

On being in a different headspace…

“I am in a different mental space, every fight has its challenges, every camp has its own challenges. I just felt like playing mind games with them, they like to play mind games with you. Bill Haney liked to talk about a lot of crazy things to throw you off, but I was going to out-crazy the crazy. I took it a little too far, but I did win.”

On how the year has been for him

“It’s been good, a couple ups and downs, but I’m excited to be in the ring and in my element. It’s where I produce the best version of myself when preparing for a fight, so I’m excited.”

On what he has been working on with Derrick James

“I just have to take the advice of my coach. He likes to keep everything low-key, but we’re prepared for whatever Rolando brings. We’re not expecting an easy fight. He’s a power-puncher, and he’s going to try to knock me out and make the fight rough. I just have to be well-conditioned and have a good gameplan.”

On Oscar saying the fight will end quickly

“You know, when you say that it usually doesn’t happen. So for me, I’m just doing my thing. If I see the shot open, I’m going to take it, but if not, I’m ready to go 12 rounds.”

On his time and struggle away from boxing

“I did a lot of things, but for me it was more mental. Everything was mental. It took a toll on my mentality because I know I didn’t take steroids or anything like that. It was tough for me to overcome that, but throughout the year I got over it, refocused myself, and got blessed with this opportunity. I felt that this is my chance to come back and show everybody I can really fight.”

On his training during the time off

“Derrick and I had a couple of training sessions preparing for that fight in Japan. Obviously, it didn’t work out, but we were in the gym preparing for another opponent. It is what it is, but now we’re here.”

DERRICK JAMES:

On how Ryan Garcia has been training this month

“He’s been good. Mentally, he’s good, and he’s strategizing well.”

On what Ryan Garcia needs to work on the most

“With boxing, it’s everything. When you lack in one area for so long, you start to lack all over. Ryan’s belief in himself is so amazing. The technique is what I work with him on, and when you work with the technique, everything rises. Because mentally, you feel you have everything together. So, for me, it’s skillset, technique, and he’s good.”

On what he’s doing about Ryan Garcia’s shoulder roll

“He’s good.”

On allowing Ryan to be himself

“All the fighters want to be able to be themselves. He wants to be able to do what I want him to do and do what he can do best, also. It’s a blend of the two. His skill set is speed, athleticism, and technique, and there’s some defense in there. Most fighters want to be complete. Regardless of how they feel about themselves, they still want to be complete. With Ryan, he wants to be a complete fighter where he has the speed and so many other things, but it’s like, ‘What do you bring and how can you make me be better?’”

On if he saw anything different with Ryan from his first camp to now

“Ryan is really focused and really tuned in. Last camp, it was whatever it was. But then being really focused on what he wants and what his desires are right now, and that’s what he’s doing. He’s really focused on everything. When I say everything, we had a discussion the other day… we’re talking, and he says, ‘I have it. I know what you want.’ I told him, ‘Listen, you’re good. We don’t want to be good. We want to be better.’ I’m not bashing because he was good, but we want to be better.”

On not seeing Ryan Garcia inside fight

“Don’t worry about that. When I say don’t worry about that, I’m saying it’s not going to be an issue. Inside fights are something that is always a possibility. If you keep them on the outside boxing, that’s what you do. It all eventually comes to this. Every now and then whether it’s this fight or some other fight, you’ll see. In a perfect world, you can fight the fight you want to fight, but in reality, it always happens. So we have to master that also. In life, you want to get what you want, and if you can box him or you can box on the inside, it is what it is.”

On choosing to train at the camp in San Diego instead of Dallas

“It’s about the atmosphere you create. You come into a shrine of great fighters, you’re going to get some great activity. We use fighters from all over. We don’t necessarily use local or homegrown. Here in San Diego, we use some local guys. When you have this beautiful area, you ask yourself mentally, ‘Where’s your reflection?’ How can I reflect on the beach or somewhere that is really mild? Sometimes that’s how you have to reflect and reach back and say, ‘What did I fight through to get to where I’m at right now?’ Every day, we can remember all of the days that were good, but we forget about the days that we had to push through.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA:

On the May 2 fight and how it happened

“We were having a conversation with His Excellency and a few other people. We’re all about making big events in strange places that no one has ever thought of. Collectively, we thought, why not Times Square? Why not outdoors and free for the public, where everyone can watch. It’s the media capital of the world. It was about time. So, Golden Boy, Turkey came together and we made it happen.”

On if he has any concerns about the event

“You have your reservations, and you’re thinking about the weather and outdoors, and things can happen. We’re very optimistic. We feel May 2 is going to be perfect. Hopefully, the weather is beautiful for everyone to watch. We’re expecting over 200,000 people there to watch. All eyes are going to be on boxing and on Ryan Garcia and all the other fighters on May 2. That’s the plus of the sport.”

On who will steal the show between Arnold Barboza Jr., Jose Ramirez, and Ryan Garcia

“The real theme of the Barboza fight is that it’ll be intense. It’s going to be a back-and-forth battle until it lasts. I really do think that Ryan vs. Rolly Romero is going to be short and sweet. Ryan is coming back after a layoff, and he’s anxious and ready and wants to prove to the world he hasn’t skipped a beat. I saw Rolly the other day, and he’s looking in beast mode. It’s a dangerous fight if you keep your head straight. One thing about Ryan is that he has fast reflexes. He is a fighter that is out to prove something. Ryan is going to go out there and take care of business, but make it one of the most exciting short fights ever.”

On Ryan Garcia’s popularity

“Ryan is a superstar. When he first went to my office with his parents, he was 17 years old. We were talking about his career and what he can do, and look at him now. That’s exactly what we do collectively as a team, and we’re very, very proud of being in his corner and promoting him. And also working things out to a point where he is a global superstar. May 2 couldn’t happen without Ryan Garcia. Ryan Garcia is the sport of boxing.”

On standing by Ryan Garcia

“One thing about us, we’re loyal. We work hard. We’re a team to everyone. When we see talent, we embrace it and we try our best. As long as Ryan wants to do this and as long as he wants to show up and fight, we’re going to be in his corner 1000 percent. I strongly feel Ryan is back with a vengeance. His demeanor is different.”

On the advice he gives Ryan

“As long as I say it, if they listen or not. It’s up to them.”

On what Ryan has to look for in his fight with Rolly

“Mallorca was a strong fighter and talker. He can knock you out with any punch. Punches are coming from different angles. Ryan has to keep his cool, be calm and collected. Wait for the opportunity and the openings. Ryan is a much taller fighter and he’s more skilled than Rolly. The punches that are going to be coming at Ryan are going to be wide and strong and fast, but I think Ryan is the type of fighter who instinctively can overcome Rolly and eventually knock him out.”

On what else he plans for 2025

“There’s a lot we’re planning for this year. There are a lot of events this year that we can’t discuss right now, but it’s going to be very exciting. We’re talking about doing another Latino night fairly soon. We’re talking about working with DAZN and bringing the best fights we can. Boxing right now is thriving and on the verge of really great things. We have to collectively work together as a team. The whole sport of boxing has to figure out how to work together. We have to navigate how to work with every promoter. Right now, things are coming together for boxing. That’s what matters. We have the best fights taking place. May 2 is a global event. That’s what boxing needs. We must continue giving fight fans the best fights.”

FANMIO SUES RYAN GARCIA & GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS

Today, FANMIO officially filed a lawsuit against boxer Ryan Garcia and Golden Boy Promotions for alleged fraudulent inducement, tortious interference, and other serious claims.

Per the lawsuit, Garcia had an exclusive agreement to fight Rukiya Anpo in an exhibition match in Japan this past New Year’s Eve. Despite receiving payment and the promotion being well underway, FANMIO was deceived into organizing an event in which Ryan never intended to participate.

In addition, Golden Boy Promotions actively worked to sabotage the event.

FANMIO felt confident that this event would be a big success. FANMIO’s actions reflected its confidence in the time and money invested in the promotion. Despite Ryan’s exclusivity to the event, he is set to fight on May 2nd in Times Square, disregarding his contractual obligations.

The justice system will take over, and FANMIO fully intends to recover damages. Doing bad business will never be tolerated.

FANMIO has hired Shaw Lewenz, a nationally recognized litigation and trial firm in South Florida. Contact: 954-361-3633

LOS ANGELES PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES RYAN GARCIA VS. ROLLY ROMERO, DEVIN HANEY VS. JOSE RAMIREZ, TEOFIMO LOPEZ VS. ARNOLD BARBOZA

LOS ANGELES — (March 10, 2025) — International superstar and welterweight world championship contender “King” Ryan Garcia, former undisputed lightweight champion and WBC Super Lightweight Champion Devin “The Dream” Haney, two-division world champion and current WBO and Ring Magazine Super Lightweight Champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez, and their respective opponents met at The Mayan in Los Angeles, Calif., to wrap up their coast-to-coast press tour ahead of their historic three-fight card in Times Square. These bouts headline the star-studded “FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves” card, marking the first-ever event in the United States presented by Ring Magazine. The event is additionally brought to you by SNK Corporation in association with Oscar De La Hoya for Golden Boy Promotions and Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.

New York’s iconic Times Square will be turned into a world-class boxing venue for one night on Friday, May 2,  to provide the backdrop for Ring Magazine’s first American event, playing host to some of the biggest stars of the game.

Garcia, (24-1, 20 KOs), is set to clash with former WBA Super Lightweight titleholder Rolando “Rolly” Romero (16-2, 13 KOs) for the WBA “World” Welterweight Championship, while Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) will face former Unified Super Lightweight Champion Jose Carlos Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs). WBO Super Lightweight Champion Lopez will battle against undefeated interim WBO titleholder Arnold Barboza Jr. (32-0, 11 KOs).

This is what the fighters and their teams had to say today:

RYAN GARCIA:

Q: What are your thoughts on Rolly Romero as an opponent?

“As far as Rolly as an opponent, he was not my first choice. It was (Isaac) Pitbull Cruz, but things played out a different way. I’m really focused on whooping Devin Haney’s ass again. That’s all I’m really worried about—not even to redeem myself, just to cement that Ostarine BS which you probably set up.”

Q: How long will Rolly last in the ring with you?

“He’s going to come to fight. I’m not taking him lightly or anything like that. I’m still going to train my best, but everybody wants to see the rematch (with Haney), and that’s where my heart is at. So, I’ve just got to prepare well. I know I’m the better fighter, and I’m going to knock him out.”

Q: Do you think it’s important for you to make a statement in this fight?

“All of my fights are a statement. Every fight is important. I can’t go in there without trying to do my best, so of course.”

Q: Who is on your radar after Rolly Romero and Devin Haney?

“Teo, right there. I want that. You know I want that.”

Q: What’s your prediction for May 2?

“I put Rolly to sleep with a left hook. That’s it. That’s what you’re going to see. Period.”

ROLANDO “ROLLY” ROMERO:

Q: How concerned are you about Ryan Garcia’s patented left hook?

“Not very concerned at all. You move out of the way.”

Q: What did you mean when you said that Ryan Garcia doesn’t care about titles—that he just wants to be a model?

“Well, he didn’t make weight for his last world title fight, and he didn’t even try to make weight with Tank (Gervonta Davis), so he’s not chasing a belt. But we’ll see May 2.”

Q: What’s the game plan to beat Ryan Garcia?

“I don’t really have a game plan. I didn’t have one when I whooped his ass (in a sparring session eight years ago).

Q: Are you concerned that Ryan says he is looking past you?

“He can think whatever he wants. He knows me too well.”

DEVIN HANEY:

Q: Why have you seemed quiet and reserved in recent appearances?

“I’m just excited to be back in boxing, under the lights. I’m really just focused right now. I’ve got tunnel vision.”

Q: Are you happy with the matchup against Jose Ramirez, or did you prefer to fight Ryan Garcia straight away?

“Of course the big fight is Ryan Garcia, but I cannot look past Jose Ramirez. I know that he is a tough competitor. I know that he is coming to win. To get to the Ryan fight, first we’ve got to beat Jose Ramirez, and that’s what I’m here to do.”

Q: Are you going to be a different version of Devin Haney in the ring on May 2nd?

“Yes, a better version. I’ve been in the gym, working quietly behind the scenes ever since the Ryan fight. Just getting better, perfecting my craft. You guys are going to see an even better, new and improved version of Devin Haney.”

Q: Do you think Ryan Garcia’s punishment from the commission was enough?

“That’s not for me to determine right now. My main focus is Jose Ramirez and then lining it back up with Ryna Garcia. Whatever his punishment, that’s what it was, and I’m going to look to punish him in the ring.”

Q: What are we going to be saying about you after May 2?

“Like I said, even better than I was before. Like I said, I’m a new and improved version of myself.”

JOSE CARLOS RAMIREZ:

Q: What has to happen for you to have your arm raised after fighting Devin Haney?

“People forget I’m a 2012 Olympian… I’m gonna go out there on May 2 and do what I have to do. I know how much this fight means to me, to the team, and to my family. I know when I make my way to 147, I’m going to be a lot stronger and a lot faster. I’m healthier, and I’m feeling rejuvenated. I’m looking forward to making a statement on May 2nd.”

Q: Is Devin Haney going to be a more difficult fight for you than Arnold Barboza was?
“We’ll see. He’s a different opponent, so you can’t really ask that. Going back to old times, a fighter used to lose to one fighter, then beat the other fighter. You can’t say that about boxing. It’s a different division with a different Jose Ramirez.

Q: A lot of people are going to wonder about the state of Devin Haney’s chin after his fight with Ryan Garcia. Are you going to be able to test that chin?

“Of course I’m going to test the chin. That’s my job. Even if he was 31-0 with 31 knockouts, it’s still my job to test his chin.”

Q: What is your prediction for the fight?
“I just can’t wait for May 2. I’m going to make a statement, and that’s all I’m going to do. I’m focused on the fight, that’s it.”

TEOFIMO LOPEZ:

Q: How much do you make of Arnold Barboza’s confidence that he can beat you?

“To be honest, I’m focused on myself. That’s all it is. My biggest competition is myself. I could care less what Arnold has to say on that side. We’re here to take over.”

Q: Who is the most talented fighter on the card besides yourself? Who do you have the most respect for?

“Most respectfully, my son, Teofimo Liam Lopez. All of you suck, man.”

Q: Who is going to steal the show on May 2?

“The fans are going to steal the show that night. That’s what it’s all about. We want everybody to tune in, pull up—it’s open to the public, right? All of you guys are going to win that night. You get three of the hottest commodities in the sport of boxing. But there’s six of us, really. I think that’s what’s really going to matter to everyone. We’re the face of the next generation of boxing that’s coming in. That’s the most important part. I want everybody to win, outside of Arnold Barboza, that’s about it.”

Q: What will we see from you on May 2?

“Listen, guys, I’m 27. I haven’t even hit my prime. You guys have seen a version of me, and I did everything so quick. So tune in May 2.”

ARNOLD BARBOZA:

Q: What’s it going to take to beat Teofimo Lopez?

“This is going to be my easiest fight in my last four fights. Slap that clown around is what I’m going to do. He thinks he’s something special, but he’s been taken care of by Top Rank. But now Top Rank has pulled that cord, and they’re letting him play.”

Q: What is your prediction for May 2?

“May 2, I’m coming out victorious. Doesn’t matter how it happens, it happens. Teo sucks, and I’m going to beat him up, that’s it. He is not going to be the same after this, trust me.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA:

Q: What do you expect from your three fighters on this card?

“Ryan Garcia is back, baby. Badder than ever, fresher than ever. I like what I see, man. On May 2, in Times Square, this event could not take place without Ryan Garcia. That’s the bottom line. Times Square, half a million people watching, closing down the street. It’s going to be incredible. I’m proud to be a part of it…. We have three fighters on the Golden Boy roster (participating). This is the opportunity that fighters deserve. This is what boxing is all about, and I’m very proud to be a part of it.”

FRANK SMITH:

Q: You’ve been in some unique environments with Matchroom, but Times Square is a different animal altogether. What is this night going to look like?

“Yeah, we’ve done some events in amazing places, and when we first heard about the plan to do Times Square, I thought that it wouldn’t be possible. But, seeing some of the things that have been put together recently, it just shows the level that this sport can go to. Boxing is in a great place, and what The Ring Magazine is doing with boxing is unbelievable, and I’m excited for it. This is going to be a great night. These fighters are also very fortunate in many ways, to experience an event in a location like Times Square. Who would have thought that this would be possible several years ago?”

BRAD JACOBS:

Q: Have you ever seen anything like what we’re going to see on May 2 in Times Square?

“It’s a testament to these fighters, His Excellency, and The Ring Magazine crew for even thinking of a venue like Times Square. We’ve done events all over the world, in every imaginable place in the world, but not Times Square. The center of the sports and entertainment worlds will have their eyes on Times Square that night.”

RICK REENO:

Q: What impact will this card have on boxing?

“I think it’s going to have a big impact on the boxing landscape given the fighters that are involved. It’s no secret that if Ryan and Devin win their respective fights, they will meet in the fall. There are also some plans for Teo. You’ve got three hungry guys that are looking to derail that. It’s also an iconic setting that’s never been done before. I think we’re setting the stage at Ring Magazine to think outside the box and do something different. Other sports, they change, they innovate, they do different things. I think boxing should do the same, and it’s what we’re looking to do. Innovate and switch things up.”

VIDEO: RING MAGAZINE: RYAN GARCIA VS. ROLLY ROMERO LOS ANGELES LAUNCH PRESS CONFERENCE

Quotes Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves New York City Press Conference

NEW YORK – (March 4, 2025) – After the recent announcement of the spectacular three-fight card taking place in Times Square, New York, on Friday, May 2, Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs), Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs), and Teofimo Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs) met in New York City for the first of two press conferences ahead of their respective bouts. The bouts headline Ring Magazine’s first-ever event in the United States titled “FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves,” presented by SNK Corporation in association with Oscar De La Hoya for Golden Boy Promotions and Eddie Hearn for Matchroom Boxing.

Headlining this historic card, former interim WBC Lightweight Champion Garcia is set to clash with former WBA Super Lightweight titleholder Rolando “Rolly” Romero (16-2, 13 KOs) for the WBA “World” Welterweight Championship. Also in action, Haney, a former two-division champion at lightweight and super lightweight, will face off against former Unified Super Lightweight Champion Jose Carlos Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs). WBO Super Lightweight Champion Lopez will battle against undefeated WBO interim champ Arnold Barboza Jr. (32-0, 11 KOs).

The first press conference took place in front of assembled media at The Palladium Times Square. A second press conference is set to take place in Los Angeles on Monday, March 10. Details for the L.A. event will be released to the media soon.

This is what the fighters and their teams had to say:

Ryan Garcia

Q: Everyone talks about the grudge between you and Devin Haney, but it feels like there’s a grudge between you and Rolly Romero? Can you talk to us about the sparring going back years ago?

“It was a little rough sparring. He continued to use that sparring to boost his career. Credit to him. I don’t have any bad blood towards him. I’m here to do my job and set up that rematch, but I’m not overlooking him at all. I know that he’s going to come to fight, so I have to be sharp and prepared.”

Q: You admitted going into your fight with Devin Haney you were not at 100% and could’ve been in better shape. Do you have a renewed dedication to boxing?

“I want to be great and fight the best fighters in the sport. I want to show everybody that you can come back from anything, and I want to show my dedication to the sport and be a true professional. I admit my wrongs, and I don’t want anybody to take my actions before a fight and think that’s a way to handle yourself as a professional. I came here to change that. This is my first fight to get my respect back and prove to everybody that it isn’t a fluke.”

Rolando “Rolly” Romero

[Responding to Ryan Garcia’s previous statements at the press conference]

“If I was clout chasing, he would’ve had clout. It’s just sparring, we’ll see a real fight in the ring on May 2. We’re going to make it a big fight—one of the biggest fights in U.S. history.”

Q: Is this fight at welterweight better suited for you?

“I called this years ago that we’d fight at welterweight. I’ve long outgrown 140. I’ve outgrown 135 a long time ago.”

Devin Haney

Q: Why did you decide to lay out for the rest of 2024, and why did you choose Jose Ramirez as your opponent?

“I spent some time with my family. I just had a baby. I wanted to rest and recover and come back at the right time. When I came back, I wanted to fight the best fighters in the world. I didn’t want to just face anyone regular; I wanted to fight a two-time world champion like Jose Ramirez.”

Q: There are folks who say you were exposed in the first fight with Ryan Garcia. Do you feel that there are questions that are being asked of you, that Jose Ramirez is going to ask of you? Can you answer them in the ring?

“At the end of the day, I fought someone on PED’s. We move forward, and now the world wants to see what Devin Haney is going to show up. I look forward to giving everybody all those answers on May 2nd.”

Q: Was it overdue to move from 140 pounds to 147? Are you finished with junior welterweight?

“It was definitely time. My body was maturing. 140 was hard to make for me. I felt good for one fight, but in the second fight I didn’t feel as good. It’s time for 147.”

Jose Carlos Ramirez

Q: Last time we saw you, you didn’t look like yourself. I know there was some talk that maybe you were hanging up the gloves? Were you considering that? What brings you here?

“I think what it was is probably staying at 140 lbs for too long. Once I saw myself struggling to make weight and push my body through that pain, I think I was harming myself. I’m a guy with no excuses, never say no. I think I did that to myself. That was a mistake, and it’s time for me to grow and move up to the next weight class at 147. I know what I can do, what I’ve been doing in sparring against guys who are world champions. I know what I’m capable of. When it comes to May 2, I’m going to go out there and make it a fight.”

Q: How do you get to Devin Haney and break that style down?

“I’ve never been too worried about my opposition. I focus on myself. I became the best boxer at lightweight in the Americas, becoming an Olympian, beating guys with different styles and speeds. I think people underestimate my speed and power, but I’m ready to put it together on May 2. If you thought I was strong at 140, just watch me at 147.”

Teofimo Lopez

Q: [On his outfit] What inspires this right here? Is this the Warriors or something? West Side Story?

“Hey, well, first off, let’s say thank you to God, all praise be to Allah. Truthfully, I think that all these things come together, and that’s really why we’re all here. We’re here to create big, big fights, and this is what it’s all about. You know, I just want to thank everyone who has partaken in this, DAZN, truthfully, The Ring as well, and me being the champion. Fatal Fury, let’s get it going. I’m here to bring and restore balance to this 3D dimensional world and take over again like I always do. Times Square takeover.”

Q: Arnold says you’ve been avoiding him. He’s wanted this fight for a long time. Why hasn’t it happened until now?

“I’m just focused on big fights. I don’t think that Barboza is that type, but, His Excellency asked for the fight. They think it’s a great fight, a lucrative fight for this card, and you know, what can I do? Bring him on.”

Q: When it was first brought up to you, were you thinking he hasn’t achieved enough or he doesn’t have a big enough name?

“Stylistically, he’s a strong fighter. We’ve seen those in the past, and I don’t think he had that eye or fanbase. He’s 32-0 and he just got an interim world title. At 15 fights, I got my first world title and I won it at Madison Square Garden and then became disputed at 16 fights. I’m only 27.”

Arnold Barboza Jr.

Q: You’ve been fighting difficult fighters. You wanted this fight years ago. Is it better now that it’s happening on May 2 than had it happened years prior? Have you grown since that point?

“I think Teo is fighting me at the worst time he could fight me. I’m coming off of two victories in a five-month span. The train is going, and I think that I’m going to shock the world again.”

Q: For people who don’t know you, can you tell us a bit about your background? What makes you, you?

“Nothing was given to me, everything was earned. I’m trying to grind, and I’m a worker. I’m at where I’m at because of my hard work. Shoutout to my pops, who’s been my trainer since I was five years old. I was raised by a real man that takes care of his family. May 2, I’m a live dog and he’s going to see.”

Rick Reeno, COO of Ring Magazine

“Everyone knows it’s the big elephant in the room. If Ryan and Devin win their fights, they will most likely go into a fight in the fall. I know Jose and his team have said Devin is never getting to that fight. Teo is in a real dangerous fight, he’ll be defending the WBO title and the Ring Magazine title against a mandatory challenger, Arnold Barboza. Arnold is arguably on one of the best runs at 140 over the last 12 months. I know Arnold’s told me enough that Teo’s never getting to any of the future plans we have in store for them.

I look forward to seeing everybody in May.”

Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Boxing

“You talk about attracting a younger audience to this sport, you’ve got three of the faces in boxing. His Excellency has great plans, and people keep asking where boxing is going? Saudi Arabia, how long will it last? This is turning it up a notch. The fascination with the concept of what he’s doing and where he’s placing these fights is going to make this a huge draw around the world. I think we should all realize what a good place boxing is in at the moment. Good luck to all the fighters. It’s great to be working with Oscar and Brad to continue to change the face of boxing. This sport is on fire and this will be another huge event.”

Brad Jacobs, Top Rank

“I’ve been involved in a lot of huge events, but nothing like closing down Times Square. It’s a testament to the fighters, it’s a testament to His Excellency and Ring Magazine. We’re looking forward to it. Teofimo is not only a great fighter, but he’s a showman, and he’s going to prove that and steal the show on May 2nd.”

Oscar De La Hoya, Golden Boy Promotions

“May 2 will be one for the history books. A full-scale sanctioned professional fight held in Times Square, which will be unprecedented. The sport of boxing will be on the global stage that evening with the bright lights of New York front and center. This is what American boxing is all about. This is the highest level of boxing, especially at these weight classes. We are proud that Golden Boy Promotions has three fighters taking part in this epic event. It speaks to our company’s dedication to getting our fighters the best opportunities in the sport.”

Tuesday’s press conference saw the two combatants verbally spar throughout the proceedings, with each promising a KO victory on December 30. Here is what the press conference participants had to say Tuesday:

RYAN GARCIA

“He tried to knock out Manny Pacquiao and it pissed me off, so now I have to teach him a lesson and teach him how to box. He’s got some size and he’s real excited right now, but I’m gonna have to settle him down and knock him out. We’re gonna put a whupping on this boy.

“His energy is definitely waking me up. I was ready to enjoy the festivities but now he’s waking the dragon up. I’m definitely looking to knock him out now.

“He’s a young fighter who was trying to make a statement against a legend in Manny Pacquiao. That rubbed me the wrong way and now I’m here to show him someone in his prime with speed and power.

“I beat up a pound-for-pound champion, and you are not at that level. You’re gonna get a whupping. You’re not good, you’re just big. I’m gonna knock you out in front of the world. You may think this is Hollywood, but this is for real. You’re gonna see who the ‘King’ is.

“He’s gonna be the bigger man in that ring. We had to give him something to give him hope. We’re going to adjust and ultimately my skills are going to put me over the top. He’s training like this is a world title fight, so we can’t take this lightly.

“I went to Japan this summer to watch Manny Pacquiao and I’m excited to be going back there for this amazing event. Japan is one of the sports capitals of the world and I can’t wait to be there and meet the fans.”

RUKIYA ANPO

“Hello America! Today I have something I’d like to say directly to Ryan. We know that Ryan likes to make excuses, miss weight and lacks professionalism. He’s got no sportsmanship and no respect. Yet he dares to call himself ‘King’. On fight day I will show him that we fight for honor and legacy. I bring the real Samurai spirit and will show him exactly where he belongs.

“As a professional, you have to put on a fun and entertaining fight for the fans. I regret that I couldn’t finish Manny Pacquiao. That’s what we train to do in every fight. I have even more motivation this time and I will knock him out and finish Ryan Garcia as a professional.

“He says he doesn’t know who I am, but he will find out on fight day. I will put everything into this fight because I believe in myself and know I will win. I will announce Rukiya Anpo to the global audience.

“He’s got a world-class left hook, I’ll give him that. I’ll be aware of it and I’ll be ready for it. He’s unpolished and gets sloppy and over the course of the fight I’ll take advantage of that.

“I know how big of an opportunity this is and I know what’s at stake. But I’m not satisfied just being here. I want to show everything I can do in this fight and I won’t be satisfied until I knock him out. I want to take my name to the next level because of what I do in the ring.

“He better be grateful to me, I gave him this opportunity. I’ve fought in front of 50,000 people, he doesn’t know what he’s in for.

“I feel he’s been very disrespectful to the sport. He’s a fake ‘King’.

DERRICK JAMES, Garcia’s Trainer

“My focus is on making sure Ryan comes into the ring the best that he can be and ready to get the job done. That’s what it’s all about and that’s what we’re here to do.

“I always say that it’s not about how you view your opponent, it’s about how they view you. He obviously sees Ryan as a great threat, so he’s gonna come out and fight. We have to be prepared for that and match how hard he’s gonna train for this.”

TAKEYUKI NAKAO, Anpo’s Trainer

“My job is to make sure my fighter is prepared to have his hand raised, no matter who they’re facing. I’m making sure that Rukiya prepares well and that he’s ready to win this fight.

“We have everything perfectly prepared for this fight. We don’t know what his speed will be like until we fight, but we can take care of that with positioning and angles.”

HENRY GARCIA, Garcia’s Father

“My son has the skills to go to another level. We’re going to be really prepared for this fight and I hope that Anpo is ready, because we definitely will be.”

NOBUYUKI SAKAKIBARA, Founder & CEO of Rizin Fighting Federation

“We are very excited to announce Ryan Garcia vs. Rukiya Anpo to fight fans around the world. I believe this will be the most watched Rizin event at the end of the year because of all this star power. New Year’s Eve combat sports are a great tradition in Japan and we are so excited to be able to bring two superstars together for this fight.

“I want to thank Solomon Engel from Fanmio for being a great co-promoter. Together we are working to bring an environment so that we can bring the fight of the century to the entire world.”

SOLOMON ENGEL, CEO of Fanmio

“Ryan and Anpo is going to be a great matchup and we’re very excited about working with Rizin for this event and into the future. This is going to be a very entertaining fight. Ryan has incredible skills and Anpo is a sizeable fighter, so we think the combination is going to be electric.”

“I surpass Ryan in size, speed, power, everything,” said Rukiya Anpo. “If he goes into this match feeling like a party, it’s definitely going to be a beatdown. I’m going to beat the shit out of an arrogant, cocky Ryan and show America who the real bad boy is.”

This fight will be nothing but entertaining and expect an electrifying knockout. This is a fight you don’t want to miss.

The 26-year-old Ryan Garcia sports an outstanding record of 24-1 with 20 KOs and will compete in an exhibition for his first boxing action since his April fight against Devin Haney. A native of Victorville, California, Garcia was undefeated in his first 23 professional fights following a stellar amateur career. As he rose through the rankings, Garcia’s star exploded across social media and translated to packed venues as he became one of boxing’s true crossover stars. His lone defeat came in a 2023 mega-event against three-division champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis, as their years-long rivalry culminated in the ring with an event that sold over a million pay-per-views.

A native of Himeji, Japan who was trained in karate from an early age alongside his younger brother Riku Anpo, Rukiya Anpo has risen to superstardom in Japan with his kickboxing prowess and earned himself the “Demolition Man” moniker as he’s taken out opponent after opponent. In 2019, he became a kickboxing world champion by defeating Kaew Fairtex in back-to-back fights to capture the super lightweight title. His accolades throughout his kickboxing career also include earning second place in the 2021 Welterweight Grand Prix, in addition to 2018 and 2020 Fight of the Year and 2017 KO of the Year awards. He debuted with RIZIN in 2023, fighting Buakaw Banchamek to a draw before defeating Sho Patrick Usami.

Following his boxing debut in the special exhibition against Pacquiao, Anpo will bring his experience, size advantage and the inspiration from his legions of Japanese fans into the ring as he looks to upset the heavy-handed Garcia in his opponent’s first fight outside of North America. With two all-action styles set to meet in the center of the ring, Garcia vs. Anpo promises fireworks to close out the year.

Blair Cobbs Eyes Return to the Ring in 2024, Seeks Showdown with Ryan Garcia

LAS VEGAS, NV (August 12, 2024) – Welterweight Blair “The Flair” Cobbs (17-1-1, 10 KOs), managed by Greg Hannley, President of Prince Ranch Boxing, is gearing up for a return to the ring before the end of 2024. Cobbs, who is promoted by the legendary Don King, is coming off the most monumental victory of his career, a 10-round unanimous decision victory against multiple division world champion Adrien Broner.

Cobbs is ready to take on any of the top contenders or world champions in the welterweight division. His ultimate goal is a high-stakes showdown with Ryan Garcia upon Garcia’s return from suspension.

“I’m ready to fight anyone who dares to step in the ring with me,” said Cobbs. “I’ve proven myself against Broner, and now I’m looking for bigger challenges. I want the top contenders, the world champions, and ultimately, I want to destroy Ryan Garcia when he comes back.”

Greg Hannley is working diligently with Don King to secure Cobbs’ next big fight. “We’re in close discussions with Don King to determine the best path forward for Blair. He’s on the cusp of major opportunities, and we’re committed to making the most strategic moves for his career.”

“I’m more motivated than ever,” concluded Cobbs, who trains in Las Vegas with coach Justin Gamber. “I want to destroy Ryan Garcia when he returns to the ring. I’m going to put a beating on that boy if we ever fight. I’m not backing down from anyone. This is my time, and I’m ready to show the world what I’m capable of.”
