VIDEO: Dalton Smith vs Sam Maxwell: Final Press Conference

SMITH VS. MAXWELL + UNDERCARD PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport Chairman:

“Thank you Chris and welcome back as we talk about a tremendous fight card on Saturday live on DAZN around the world from Sheffield Arena. A huge domestic match-up in the 140lbs division. The British Champion, Sheffield’s Dalton Smith against the Commonwealth Champion, Liverpool’s Sam Maxwell. It’s a tremendous fight, former Team GB teammates but now with an opportunity to establish themselves on the world stage. This is a great fight card and one of the reasons is because you have so much young talent that is stepping up. We’ve seen some great names in British boxing over the years and it’s good to see so many familiar faces here as well. Former Matchroom fighter, Hall of Fame inductee, the great Carl ‘The Cobra’ Froch. Congratulations Carl. Two-time Featherweight World Champion Leigh Wood in the house. Two-time, two-weight World Champion Terri Harper. Onto Saturday night, as I said so much fantastic young talent here stepping up.”

Dalton Smith:

“My previous fights, obviously I always train hard, I’m a true professional but believe me I’m not underestimating Sam one bit. I’ve wanted this fight for a long time and that’s what it’s brought the best out in me. Physically it’s the best shape I’ve been in. It’s the best camp I’ve had. This fight means a lot to me – I want that British Title for keeps. I don’t feel like there’s any pressure on me – I never put pressure on myself. I’m boxing for myself, that’s it. When boxing is all said and done, it’s what I’ve achieved for myself. This is a big fight for me. I want that British Title for keeps. It’s going to be a special performance on Saturday. Sam is a good fighter. It’s levels, and I believe that’s what is going to show on Saturday night. If you can’t land then your power is a bit useless. I’m not underestimating Sam – this is a big opportunity for him. Where does Sam go after this? He needs to win this fight. This fight has brought the best out of me.”

Sam Maxwell:

I’ve enjoyed fight week so far. It’s been a busy one but I’m really enjoying it. I’m enjoying my whole boxing the last year that I’ve been with Paul Edwards. I’m enjoying it more than I’ve ever enjoyed it. It’s going to bring the best out of me. I feel like I hit hard enough to hurt anyone in the division. That’s what’s going to happen on Saturday if I land clean. I know I can hurt Dalton. The vibe I’m getting from his camp is that he’s looking to walk through me and smash me up. It’s going to be an exciting fight. Eddie has got all of the top 140lbs – it’s a great division to be part of. Beat Dalton on Saturday and I’ll put my name into the hat for some massive fights in the division. I feel like I’ve been underestimated by everyone. It’s about me going in there on Saturday and showing everyone how good I am.”

Pat McCormack:

“First title fight. I won plenty of medals in the amateurs. Olympic silver, World silver, European Games gold, Commonwealth gold. But now it’s time to win some belts as a pro. He’s coming to win, he’s a tough game lad. Fitness doesn’t win you fights. I’m levels above him and it’s going to show on Saturday night. Whatever he’s got to offer I’ve got an answer to. We’ve got a great team around us; Ben Davison, Lee Wylie, Barry Smith. All of the guys in the gym are flying at the minute. There’s not stopping us at the minute. Get this belt won on Saturday and push on from there. We’re looking at bigger and better things. This is the start of the titles.”

Tony Dixon:

“I love it. This is what I do. I’m a fighter. That’s what I come to do, give everyone entertainment. I’m here to do a job. I think it’s going to be a brilliant fight. He hasn’t fought me yet has he.”

Hopey Price:

“The last opponent was a little bit awkward but then again he boxed for a World Title. I fought him in my tenth fight. You can’t please everyone. Some people have said it was a bit boring but it’s given me the bit between my teeth a little bit for this fight. He’s a bit more game and he’ll stand there straight in front of me. I can stand straight in front of him, I can T off. I can just punch his head in gypsy style. The pressure is one now in these sort of fights. It’s not just about winning these fights and cruising through these fights. I really want to show the best of my ability. 100% this fight I’m coming for the knockout. I’m definitely going to take him out.”

James Beech Jnr:

“I’m ready to go now. I’ve been here and I’ve done it. I’m just ready to go. I’ve definitely learnt from it. In the past I’ve got myself hyped up, maybe too hyped up in the past whereas this week I’m just staying relaxed. I’m just treating it as if it’s a normal fight really.”

Junaid Bostan:

“I mean if you get asked questions you’re going to speak aren’t you. I’ve seen bits and bobs from their side saying, ‘he’s talking a good game’, but when you’re getting asked questions you’re going to answer them and you’re going to speak confidently. First of all, Eid Mubarak to all of my brothers and sisters. Inshallah you all have a good day. He mentioned about people pulling out of fights, he’ll never have that issue with me. I got offered the fight, watched a bit of a clip and said, ‘yeah no problem’. I feel like a big fish right now. It was only last year when I was on the Sheffield show and I was on a stool, I was like Eddie sort this out I know I’m not signed but you don’t have to rub it in. Now all of a sudden I’m on the top table. Life comes at you fast. It’s up to me to stay composed, stay switched on and deliver.”

Ryan Amos:

“I’m from the small hall shows. I had a few opportunities, everyone pulled out. I’m just happy that somebody has accepted a fight. I’m ready to go. I always come to fight. Basically I got offered a Midlands Title fight when I didn’t have much experience. I won that fight and just keep getting better and better.”

Lewis Sylvester:

“This is another step up for me. My last fight was another undefeated fighter for the final eliminator. Steffy has done everything in his power to get me to this position. I’m here now and I’m finally ready to show the world what I can do. A win is always good but putting on a great performance is even better. Getting a win, this could change my life and it could change my career completely. Hull is a massive boxing city and I’m ready to put it back on the map.”

Adam Cope:

“I can’t wait. I’ve been fit for a while and then this opportunity came up. I’m ready to step in and take it. I think a lot of people in boxing know about me but now it’s time to show everyone else what I can do. I think I can do everything really; box, punch, come forward and mix it up and work them out when I’m in there. I’ve got loads of support coming and I’m not going to let them down.”

Beatriz Ferreira:

“I’m coming from the World Championship and I’m really happy to be here for my third professional fight. I’ve prepared really well, coming from the World Title victory my adrenaline is at a 1000%. Preparation has been really good, I’m very confident and really looking forward to the fight. Yes I am highly determined. What I want is titles, I want belts. Olympic boxing is very different, the preparation is very different but I am really prepared for this. What I want is to collect belts. I am ready for it.”

Karla Ramos Zamora:

“I am focused on this next fight. I’ve got a lot of professional experience. Beatrice comes in with a lot of Olympic experience so everything is in place to be a really good fight on Saturday and I hope we have a clean fight and I hope it is a really good fight.”

Nico Leivars:

“It has been a frustrating few months. It’s been months where I’ve still been in the gym training hard, money in the bank if you want to say. I’m hoping for a good performance on Saturday night and you’ll see a lot of improvement. The whole gym is flying and it’s definitely bringing the best out of all of us. We’re all picking things up when we’re training together and sparring. Even with this weekend we’ve got three on the card and we’ve all been looking good in the gym. It’ll be three wins again on Saturday.”

Cory O’Regan:

“The Leeds thing I’ve done twice. This is my third time on a Matchroom card. I believe each one has been a little bit better of a performance. Hopefully for the third one, I plan on doing the same thing. In Leeds, I’m known around that way. Fighting in another city is good for my profile and building. Any opportunity you get to come on a show like this is one you have to take. It’s the one you want to look good on. I know what you guys can offer. I know what you can do for boxers, the opportunities and everything. It’s about me getting on the right shows at the right time and progressing in my career.”

SMITH VS. MAXWELL PRESS BRIEFING QUOTES

Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Sport Chairman:

“Thank you everybody for just joining us very quickly in this very warm room here in Wembley Arena. As you know, big night of boxing tonight, but whilst we had the opportunity we wanted to bring these two together ahead of what I think is a brilliant fight on July 1st at the Sheffield Arena.

“I think domestic fights, we know, are full of drama and I think we’ve got a great fight. British and Commonwealth Title fight, the chance for Dalton Smith to win the Lonsdale belt for keeps. The chance for Sam Maxwell to have a huge win and an opportunity to put himself on the world stage.

“I think when you’re looking at opponents, the danger-men always come from different people with great pedigree. Sam Maxwell, GB fighter, many international tournaments, these two know each other from the GB squad and have shared rounds together.”

Dalton Smith:

“I said it before, I wanted this fight 18 months ago Eddie because it’s a fight that would put me up to the next level but it’s also a fight I know that stylistically wise I’m going to look good in. You know me, I’m not one to talk crap but when I see something and I believe in it I’ll say it, and I honestly do believe this is going to be a fight where Dalton Smith is going to look destructive.

“Even my camp, I feel like I’m in a position where I’m coming into my prime. I’m feeling fit and strong. Even in sparring, it’s the best I’ve ever felt. We’re three weeks away and I just can’t wait to get in there and show people.

“I’m very confident I can get anyone out inside the distance, but I’ve prepared for 12 rounds. How my career has gone at the minute, I’ve basically wiped everyone out, and the main thing I needed was the rounds. My last two fights I’ve been able to get that but I’ve just needed that fight to give me that fire in my belly, what gees me up. I believe this is the fight that’s going to get that out of me, and it has in camp.

“Sometimes you can be professional but it’s hard to get up for them fights. You saw that in my last fight. But believe me, this is a fight where’ you’re going to see the best of Dalton Smith.

“It was only two weeks ago I was at Wembley myself. We got the promotion. Like I say, I want to bring the big fights to Sheffield. Sheffield Wednesday are right behind me, the supporters there, and not only that the whole of Sheffield. I’m putting big nights of boxing back into Sheffield – especially the Hillsborough one, I’m confident as long as I keep winning I’m going to make that dream become a reality next year.

“I dreamt of having every single belt on my mantlepiece. Sometimes we forget what we’re actually achieving. Sometimes we get caught up in the process of it all. Sometimes you have to sit back and realise what you’ve actually achieved. I’m one fight away from keeping that British Title for keeps.

“I’ve left no stone unturned. Believe me, it’s the best camp I’ve ever had. I’ve been out in LA sparring some of the best fighters in the world. I haven’t done that without any thought. That was my plan to go out there, I wanted this to be my bet camp and it has been my best camp. It’s the best I’ve been performing.

“You look at the 140lbs division, there’s bigger names out there (than Adam Aziz). There’s some big big names. Look at some of the signings Eddie has just made. The 140lbs division for me is probably one of the most stacked. For me to get that Hillsborough Stadium fight, I’m not going to be short of names for a dance partner.”

Sam Maxwell:

“Everyone knows my experience and what I’ve done in the game. The way Dalton has been guided, he’s getting stepped up and stepped up, so this is the moment that we’ll see how good Dalton really is, fighting me, because I know I’m a great fighter.

“I’m extremely hungry right now. It was hard taking that loss but I’ve regrouped, come back and I feel like I’m much stronger now and it’s just about showing that on fight night now. The loss was another thing added to my experience and I’ve developed from that. I’m a better fighter for that loss I feel.

“A win for me would change the trajectory of my career. That’s why I’ve taken this fight. That’s why I’m training harder than I’ve ever trained in my life. Beating Dalton, Dalton is the man, he’s the poster boy, he’s had some great wins, so beating him shows I’m at that level and I’m putting my name out there to be in the big fights.”

DALTON SMITH AND SAM MAXWELL CLASH FOR BRITISH AND COMMONWEALTH
SUPER-LIGHTWEIGHT TITLES ON JULY 1

Dalton Smith and Sam Maxwell will clash for the British and Commonwealth Super-Lightweight Titles at the Utilita Arena Sheffield on Saturday July 1, live worldwide on DAZN (excluding Australia and New Zealand).

Sheffield’s Smith (14-0, 10 KOs), who will be headlining his second fight night in his home city, is aiming to win the prestigious Lord Lonsdale Challenge belt outright after claiming the vacant title by stopping local rival Sam O’Maison last August and then making successful defences against Kaisee Benjamin in November and Billy Allington in February.

One of the hottest properties in world boxing, ‘Thunder’ will be aiming to add Maxwell’s Commonwealth Title to his growing collection that boasts the WBA Intercontinental Title, WBC International Silver Title and British Title, as he continues to work towards a dream World Title shot at Hillsborough, home to his beloved Sheffield Wednesday, in summer 2024.

Liverpool’s Maxwell (17-1, 11 KOs), a former WBO European and British Champion at 140lbs, will be looking to reclaim the British Title after outpointing Akeem Ennis-Brown to win the famous old belt, along with the Commonwealth crown, in Birmingham back in August 2021. The former Team GB standout bounced back from his stoppage loss to Alejandro Meneses with a comfortable decision over Shaun Cooper in February.

“It will be an honour to win the Lonsdale belt outright on July 1 in my home city and write my name into the history books, as well as picking up the Commonwealth Title,” said Smith. “Every British fighter dreams of winning the Lord Lonsdale Challenge Belt when they start out, so to win it for keeps will be a massive box ticked for me as I then kick on. Sam is a great fighter who can really punch. He will be giving it his all to get the British Title back and keep his Commonwealth Title, but I’m very confident I will have too much for him on the night and it will be another special atmosphere in the arena in front of my home support.”

“It is every boxer’s dream to headline a massive show, so to get the opportunity to do so on a Matchroom Boxing card shown live around the world on DAZN is amazing,” said Maxwell. “My Commonwealth belt is on the line but I’m looking forward to hearing, ‘AND THE NEW’ when I regain the British Title. I believe no one in the world can beat me when I am at my best. I can’t wait for fight night. The atmosphere is going to be unreal and my fans will definitely be heard.”

“I can’t wait to see Sheffield’s very own Dalton Smith back at the Utilita Arena on Saturday July 1 as he looks to create more history by winning the British Title outright against Liverpool’s Sam Maxwell in front of an electric crowd,” said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. “The arena was bouncing last summer when he claimed the vacant belt against local rival Sam O’Maison and I’m anticipating it to be even louder in there as ‘Thunder’ looks to pick up the Commonwealth Title in front of his growing support. He faces his toughest test to date in the shape of former British Champion Maxwell, who will be looking to claim the scalp of one of the brightest talents in world boxing and put his name firmly back in the mix at 140lbs. We’ve got another stacked card in store for fight fans that we will be announcing soon. Catch it all live around the world exclusively on DAZN.”

Tickets for Smith vs. Maxwell are priced £40, £60, £100 and £200 (VIP).

Matchroom Fight Pass members will be able to purchase tickets from midday on Monday April 24. Priority ticket info will be emailed directly to eligible members ahead of the on-sale time.

General Sale tickets can be purchase via Stage Front and utilitaarenasheffield.co.uk from midday on Tuesday April 25.

SAM MAXWELL LANDS IBO WORLD TITLE SHOT AT PROBELLUM LIVERPOOL EVENT

LIVERPOOL, APRIL 5 – Sam Maxwell hopes to walk in the footsteps of Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton by winning the IBO super-lightweight world title later this month.

The 33-year-old faces Alejandro Meneses at Probellum Liverpool on April 22 on a massive night of world championship boxing in one of Britain’s boxing hotbeds.

Maxwell’s crack at the IBO belt will act as chief support to the main event which sees local hero Paul Butler challenge WBO bantamweight champion John Riel Casimero, at the M&S Bank Arena.

The unbeaten Maxwell, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist in the amateurs, stayed up into the early hours of the morning to watch Pacquiao and Hatton’s 2009 mega fight in Las Vegas, when the IBO crown was on the line.

Maxwell, nicknamed ‘Super Sam’, finds it surreal that he will now be competing for that same title later this month in front of a packed arena in Liverpool.

“My career has been building to this moment,” said the 16-0 Sam Maxwell.

“I won the WBO European title, then British and the Commonwealth belts and how I have this huge fight for the IBO world title.

“I feel lucky to be handed this opportunity and I will make the most of it.

“Ricky Hatton and Manny Pacquiao have held the title so it’s a belt with a lot of history.

“I watched those Hatton and Pacquiao fights, including when they fought each other, and so it is absolutely crazy to think I will now be fighting for that title.”

‘A LIFE CHANGING MOMENT’ – read our full interview with Sam Maxwell here

Richard Schaefer, President of Probellum said: “The 140lbs division is on fire now and by winning the IBO world title, Sam can put himself in the frame for some career-defining fights.

“The world of boxing is expecting Josh Taylor to vacate his belts and move up to 147lbs and, as Sam says, that would create massive opportunities in the division for many fighters, including Maxwell.

“Probellum is thrilled to be able to deliver this fight for Sam and put it on a brilliant card in Liverpool later this month. We can’t wait for our first event in one of the UK’s biggest fight cities.”

NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS: ENNIS-BROWN v MAXWELL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

LESS THAN three weeks until their British and Commonwealth title fight, Akeem Ennis-Brown and Sam Maxwell today went head-to-head for the first time – and it all kicked off.

Ennis-Brown (14-0, 1 KO) defends his titles against Maxwell (15-0, 11 KOs) on show entitled ‘Night Of Champions’ at the Utilita Arena Birmingham on August 28, live on BT Sport.

Before the pushing and shoving they took some time to speak to the media. Quotes below.

Ennis Brown said: “I love a challenge and love to show what I’m all about. Look at me record, all I do is pick hard fights. I can’t wait to beat him, he’s the perfect opponent to announce myself.

“He’ll soon find out that I’m not Joe Hughes or Conor Parker. He’s got a real champion in front of him. His legacy will be getting beat by me. I’m a real fighter with real heart.

“After I beat him I’ll pay him to be a sparring partner for me. I’m excited that he has a big knockout ratio, it gets me up for the fight. It would be boring if he didn’t bring that to the table. I’ll beat Sam Maxwell in style and can’t wait to do it.”

Maxwell said: “You look like a clown. There is no chance you’re beating me, you’ve reached your level. You’ll be no higher than British champion, I’m going all the way.

“He’s boxed at a good level but has only got one knockout, so the power is in my favour. I’ll show that on fight night. Nothing said here affects anything on fight night, I win 100%.

“I’m not leaving the ring without the win. I can’t train any harder, and I believe in my team, so I can’t wait to show how good I am. I’m looking forward to the challenge and I’ll be going home with the belts.”

Big time boxing returns to Birmingham on Saturday August 28.

SAM MAXWELL DELIGHTED HE’S HAD TO WAIT FOR BRITISH AND COMMONWEALTH TITLE SHOT

SAM MAXWELL says the delay to his big fight against Akeem Ennis-Brown has worked in his favour.

Gloucester’s Ennis-Brown  (14-0, 1 KO) was due to defend his British and Commonwealth Super-Lightweight titles against Maxwell in March, but pulled out injured days before they were due to meet.

He will now make the first defence of his titles against Maxwell (15-0, 11 KOs) at Utilita Arena, Birmingham on Saturday August 28, live on BT Sport.

Maxwell had to be content with a non-title points win over Ben Fields when Ennis-Brown pulled out, but he couldn’t be happier.

He joined Manchester trainer Steve Maylett shortly before their clash was scheduled giving them little time together.

Maxwell explained: “It was a blessing in disguise that Akeem pulled out. I was a bit gutted at the time because it was my first top of the bill and I was ready to go.

“But, I’d only had five weeks with Steve. I’d been doing stuff with Danny Vaughan and on my own.

“Now I have had five months with Steve and it has worked out for me well.

“Steve told me that had it been anybody else with five weeks’ notice for a British title fight he wouldn’t have taken them on.

“He did because he’d known me well for 15 years and I used to go to the gym and spar with Terry Flanagan. Steve realised I needed something. He knew me and liked me so he took me on.

“When I first went to him and the fight was around the corner, Steve said; ‘I can give you tactics, tell you how I want to fight and get you fit for 12 rounds’.

“That is all we focused on for those few weeks. Now we have a long time to get things right with the game plan. I know if I follow that through I will win this fight.

“Steve is a really good tactician and what he wants is going to work. It is about me following orders and making sure I deliver on fight night.”

“I am very good at the basics, a very good technical boxer. That has got me where I am and I can punch. I am going to perform and I can’t wait to show everyone.”

AHMED/KHADEMI BRITISH TITLE SCRAP REPLACES FOSTER/CUNNINGHAM; FOSTER INJURED

Hall-Of-Fame Promoter Frank Warren’s Queensberry are bringing a stacked card, including THREE British title fights, to the Utlilita Arena, Birmingham on Saturday August 28, live on BT Sport.

Anthony Cacace will defend against Lyon Woodstock, Akeem Ennis-Brown against Sam Maxwell and Ijaz Ahmed and Kaisy Khademi will contest the vacant British Super-Flyweight title.

Other big names on the blockbuster bill includes Anthony Yarde and boxing’s biggest ticket seller Nathan Heaney.

Former World Light-Heavyweight title challenger Yarde (20-2, 19 KOs) has a warm-up ahead of his likely rematch against Commonwealth champion Lyndon Arthur, who controversially outpointed him last December.

Akeem Ennis-Brown (14-0, 1 KO) will risk his British and Commonwealth Super-Lightweight championships against Liverpool’s former amateur superstar Sam Maxwell (15-0, 11 KOs).

The Gloucester man hasn’t boxed since winning his title in a points win against Philip Bowes last September.

He had been due to face Maxwell in March, but was injured and his challenger had to be content with a points win against late sub Ben Fields.

Belfast’s Anthony Cacace (18-1, 7 KOs) will finally get to defend his British Super-Featherweight crown against Lyon Woodstock (12-2, 5 KOs).

Injuries and illness has prevented the fight taking place since it was first scheduled last August, and it promises to be a cracking 12 rounder.

In a fourth title fight Telford’s Liam Davies (9-0, 4 KOs) will make his first defence of the English Bantamweight title he won so impressively against Sean Cairns last November.

Warren added: “Ennis-Brown v Maxwell and Cacace v Woodstock fights promise and will deliver excitement for those lucky enough to be there and BT Sport viewers.

“Ahmed v Khademi was a closely fought contest first time out, I can only imagine fans will be treated to much the same this time around.

“This is a card that no one can have any complaints about.”

Stoke Middleweight Heaney(12-0, 4 KOs) will have his raucous army behind him when he boxes a ten rounder in his third fight under the Queensberry banner.

Warren hopes that next summer, Heaney will be fighting on an open air show at the bet365 Stadium, home of his beloved Stoke City.

Northampton Super-Lightweight Eithan James (5-0) will box a six rounder on the bill.

Dublin’s Willo Hayden a training partner of Conor McGregor makes his professional debut in a four round Super-Lightweight contest.

Also in four round action is Nottingham Light-Heavyweight Ezra Taylor (1-0, 1 KO) and Telford debutant Super-Lightweight Macauley Owen.

QUEENSBERRY UNVEIL BIRMINGHAM ‘NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS’

BRAD FOSTER will face Jason Cunningham for the British, Commonwealth and European Super-Bantamweight titles at Utlilita Arena, Birmingham on Saturday August 28, live on BT Sport.

Their eagerly awaited triple title showdown heads a stunning night of action that includes two further British championship contests.

Other big names on the blockbuster bill includes Anthony Yarde and boxing’s biggest ticket seller Nathan Heaney.

British and Commonwealth champion Foster’s promoters Queensberry wiped out their rivals when purse bids were ordered for the showdown against European title holder Cunningham (29-6, 6KOs).

Foster (14-0-2, 5 KOs) lives close to the venue in Lichfield and promoter Frank Warren is backing his legion of fans to roar him on.

Warren said: “It is one of the most evenly matched fights anywhere this year, but we want to give Brad every advantage.

“The bill is outstanding and a big local crowd could be the difference come fight night. What a fight it will be.

“I expected Brad to be facing Gamal Yafai, but Jason was exceptional when he beat him. Brad has been in fantastic form since he signed with Queensberry and it’s hard to believe he’s only 23.”

Doncaster southpaw Cunningham caused a huge upset when he snatched the European crown from Yafai in May.

Foster last fought in March when he scored a shut out points win against Alvaro Rodriguez to pick up the vacant IBF International belt.

SAM MAXWELL BELIEVES HE CAN SCORE KO OVER “NASTY AND WEIRD” AKEEM ENNIS-BROWN ON MARCH 26

SAM MAXWELL has branded arch rival Akeem Ennis-Brown; “Nasty and weird.”

The Liverpool man gets his chance to have the final word when he challenges for Ennis-Brown’s British and Commonwealth Super-Lightweight titles on Friday March 26, live on BT Sport.

Maxwell (14-0, 11 KOs) believes the Gloucester man has been encouraged to wind him up by trash talking Ohara Davies.

Ennis-Brown (14-0, 1 KO) who will be making his first defence of the titles he won by defeating Philip Bowes last September has been sparring with Davies ahead of the crucial challenge.

Maxwell said: “Akeem is probably getting his advice from Ohara, they’re just two fools. I will deal with him and then I will deal with Ohara.

“Sometimes Akeem is respectful, but sometimes goes the Ohara route and is disrespectful. It’s nasty and weird.

“I’m ready for his mind games where he’s trying to get any edge he can. I’m more mature and wont let him get in my head.

“He keeps calling me ‘son’ like he’s my Dad, but I respect him and I’m leaving no stone unturned in the gym.

“Frank Warren has delivered this title shot and I am going to give it my all and become champion.”

Former GB amateur star Maxwell has moved to new trainer Steve Maylett, a switch that he believes will pay dividends now and in the future.

Sam, 32, added: “Steve has taken me on at late notice, but we have bonded so well. It’s a great team and I feel part of them.

“It wasn’t ideal to start, but I am more than happy and it’s starting to pay off.

“It’s short notice so Steve isn’t changing too much, but there are little things that will pay off.

“I think I can knock Akeem out. Steve has been saying I don’t need to put power in my shots because it’s there.

“I carry my power and he has something to worry about from round one to 12. Akeem doesn’t have the same thunderous power as me. Taking a lot will damage him as well.”

Although Maxwell dismisses Ennis-Brown’s crass chat and believes he’ll get the KO win, the challenger does have some praise for the champion.

“Maybe he has had to take more gambles than me as a pro. He hadn’t done it as an amateur and perhaps had to take harder fights to get his shot,” he said.

“Akeem has the better resume than me. He has had to have hard fights and come through them.

“He is really good at what he does. He throws a lot of shots, is very fit, unorthodox and awkward. He gets people to fight his fight.

“The KO stats might be a little misleading, but that doesn’t hide the fact that I punch harder than him and the power is with me.

“But, at this level anyone can punch. He will hit hard and I respect his power, but the edge is with me in that department.”

PARKER: I’LL DO A LOMACHENKO!

CONNOR PARKER JOKED that he might attempt to carry out an impression of Vasyl Lomachenko when he steps in the ring with Sam Maxwell at Arena, Birmingham on November 30, with Maxwell’s WBO European super lightweight title at stake.

Maxwell, famously, twice fought the great Ukrainian during his amateur days representing Team GB and gave a good account of himself, but ultimately failed to defeat the now pound-for-pound great.

The 24-year-old Parker from Derbyshire and the 31-year-old Scouser share an identical professional record of 12-0, but the East Midlands man accepts it is advantage Maxwell in terms of amateur experience, KOs recorded and being tested over ten rounds as Maxwell was by Sabri Sediri in a helter-skelter battle in March.

For Parker this is opportunity knocking in the Second City and he was happy to place his original fight plans on hold when he got wind of a title tilt.

“I was sat at home when I found out,” said the southpaw. “My dad told me about it then I had to hang on and wait for confirmation. I was so hoping I would get this shot, I had another fight scheduled for a couple of days after, but now I can’t wait for this one.

“It is a massive opportunity and I think I am ready for fights like this. Our records are similar and the only difference is Sam has got more knockouts than me. Record-wise that is the only thing and he has had a tough fight over ten rounds.

“The footage of his fights is all there to see right from his amateur days. He has been around for years, hasn’t he, and there is plenty to pick up on what he does. I might look at the Lomachenko tapes and do an impression of him!”

Parker has just a single stoppage on his ledger but he insists this is a misleading statistic that is down to the limited ambition of the opponents put in front of him. He is happy to back himself in the trading of bombs.

“I’ve boxed my fair share of journeymen and then won a Midlands title in my eighth fight. I beat Kevin Hooper for the Midlands and it was a good win that was because he has been English champion. Since then I have just been keeping busy.

“I’ve won the Midlands and I’ve got to prove myself against better opponents now. Hooper was the first one to really hit me back and I enjoyed it more because he was not just there to survive and, if anything, I felt more comfortable in there. I liked it.

“This show is as much as I could have asked for because, at the minute, not many people know who I am, but after this fight they will know and I can’t wait. If I win this fight it will just get bigger and bigger,” added Parker, who does not underestimate the magnitude of the task in front of him.

“I think Sam is a good, technical boxer with a strong back hand. You can tell he is schooled well. I sort of take something from the way Sabri Sediri got to him but it could have just been and off-night and we need to prepare for the best Sam possible and that is what we will be doing.

“True, he got put down two or three times and you do take confidence from it, but I am preparing for a hard fight. My record doesn’t suggest it, but I can punch.”

Sam Maxwell defending his WBO European super lightweight title against the also unbeaten Connor Parker from Derbyshire features on a stacked night of title action at Arena, Birmingham on November 30. WBO world bantamweight champion Zolani Tete defends his title against mandatory challenger John Riel Casimero and British and Commonwealth welterweight champion Chris Jenkins makes a defence against Liam Taylor. MAXWELL HAS DOMESTIC SUPREMACY IN HIS 2020 VISION

SAM MAXWELL HAS put the leading super lightweights on notice that he is targeting the big domestic dust-ups in 2020.

The 31-year-old from Liverpool was thrust into the spotlight back in March when he won his first major title in dramatic circumstances with a final round stoppage of Sabri Sediri.

The previously unbeaten Frenchman sent Maxwell south to the canvas in both the first two rounds and rocked the former Team GB star in round ten before choosing to showboat rather than execute a finish.

Maxwell recovered and made the flashy French-based Tunisian pay for playing to the Leicester crowd when a huge right hand laid him spark out and referee Steve Gray ended the spectacular proceedings.

The 12-0 Maxwell was duly crowned WBO European champion and he makes a first defence against the also 12-0 Connor Parker at Arena, Birmingham on November 30.

He would very much like the fight to be the first of many on the domestic front in what is a hugely competitive weight class.

“There will be less drama this time,” insisted Maxwell when reminded of the final round footage that went viral and was seen by millions. “I have promised my missus and myself as well, but it is still going to be entertaining and I will go for the knockout and big shots.

“I wouldn’t change a thing about it though because if I had gone in and just got the win I thought I was going to, I wouldn’t have got the exposure that I did and it was mad. My name is out there now and people know me.

“Now it is Connor Parker, who is a good tidy boxer who has not lost a round, but on November 30 he is going to lose some rounds and get knocked out, definitely.

“At this level everyone can box and move but not many have the power that can change a fight. I’ve got that from the first to last round and I am going to show that on fight night. Again.”

Maxwell was an interested television viewer a couple of weeks ago when Lewis Ritson and Robbie Davies jr squared up in Newcastle, with Ritson prevailing after an entertaining and closely fought scrap.

He hopes to be mixing in such company himself in the not too distant future.

“They were fighting in a world title eliminator and are at near the pinnacle of my weight. It was a great fight, but one where I could see myself getting in with either of them and getting the win.

“Getting past Connor Parker is my main goal at the moment and next year I will be in a position to fight Ritson and Davies and I am confident I can beat them.”

Bowen stops McCorry in 9

Sam Bowen battered and bloodied Jordan McCorry en-route to a 9th round stoppage in their scheduled 12-round junior lightweight bout at The Leicester Arena in Leicester, England.

The time of the stoppage was 33 seconds of the 9th frame.

Bowen, 129 lbs is now 15-0 with 11 knockouts. McCorry, 129 lbs is now 17-5-1.

Nathan Gorman remained undefeated with a 10-round decision over former world title challenger Kevin Johnson in a heavyweight bout.

Gorman won by a referee’s score of 100-90, and is now 16-0. Johnson is 34-13-1.

Sam Maxwell scored a stunning 10th round stoppage over Sabri Sediri in the final round of their super lightweight bout.

In round one, Sediri floored Maxwell with a left hook. In round two, Sediri dropped Maxwell with a perfect right to the chin. In round three, Sediri began to bleed from his nose.

With his left eye nearly shut, Maxwell somehow landed a huge right hand to the side of the jaw that sent Sediri to the canvas. Sediri got to his feet, but was unsteady, and the bout was stopped at 2:46.

Maxwell was ahead on two of the three official scorecards.

Maxwell, 139 lbs of Liverpool is 11-0 with nine knockouts. Sediri, 139 lbs of France is 10-1-1.

In a battle of undefeated Leicester based super welterweights, CJ Challenger won a 10-round decision over Ky;e Haywood.

Challenger, 153 lbs won by a 97-95 score and is now 10-0. Haywood, 152 lbs is 8-1.

MAXWELL BIDS FOR FIRST BELT

SAM MAXWELL WILL seek to win his first professional title in Leicester on February 23 when he fights Kelvin Dotel for the WBO European super lightweight title.

The 10-0 (8 KOs) former Team GB member from Liverpool has been promising a big 2019 and he launches his campaign at the Morningside Arena on a bill also featuring Anthony Yarde taking on Travis Reeves with the WBO Intercontinental light heavyweight title at stake, as well as British super featherweight champion Sam Bowen returning after an impressive stoppage win last time out at the arena.

The Spaniard Dotel holds a record of 14-4 (7 KOs), having won the Spanish welterweight title in 2015 and the IBF International title in 2018. In his last fight in December he defeated the then 18-0 Mishiko Beselia via a sixth round stoppage.

For Maxwell, 30, winning the WBO belt is first and foremost in his ambitions for the year ahead.

“Yeah definitely, it is a massive title and a massive opportunity for me that I am looking forward to,” reacted Maxwell, who now trains in Glasgow under trainer Danny Vaughan.

“I think it is perfect timing for me because I am peaking and I aimed for this to be my year.

“It is when I wanted a shot and it has been delivered to me.

“From Dotel’s record he has boxed at a higher level than me and in his last fight he beat an undefeated opponent. I have watched a few videos of him and he is a good all-round boxer who looks like he has got a bit of power as well. So it should be a good fight,” he added, knowing full well that recent history has provided evidence of the dangers of overlooking Spanish fighters operating at European level.

“Definitely, I always look at it as if they come from Spain or France they are usually very respectable opponents and I will have to be at my best – and I’m going to be.”

Maxwell has linked himself to a potential showdown with Ohara Davies and the Hackney man responded on ‘The Boxing Podcast’ by reasoning that he needs to prove himself a contender before he would entertain stepping in the ring.

Maxwell has no argument with this train of thought and intends on making a start by collecting his first belt, live on BT Sport.

“Those comments make sense because I am just a 10-0 opponent at the moment and not really on his radar. If I perform as well as I know I can and win this title, I’ll start pricking some ears up and people will start taking an interest in me.

“Then big fights like this can happen.”

Maxwell v Dotel features on a card topped by Anthony Yarde’s defence of his WBO Intercontinental light heavyweight title against Travis Reeves at the Morningside Arena, along with British super featherweight champion Sam ‘Bullet’ Bowen. Local fighters CJ Challenger and Kyle Haywood do battle for the vacant Midlands Area super welterweight title, with Nathan Gorman, Lyon Woodstock, Ryan Garner, Willy Hutchinson, Tommy Fury, Ryan Hatton and Mark Chamberlain also featuring on the card.

SAM MAXWELL: “I AM TEN TIMES A BETTER BOXER THAN OHARA DAVIES”

SAM MAXWELL IS now into double digits as a professional super lightweight and believes he has served his time on the learning curve.

The Liverpool lad, who has been a regular feature on big arena undercards, insists he is ready to step into the spotlight and has reached the point in time when a little bit of name-dropping doesn’t do any harm, but one name in particular appeals more than most.

“I am ready for a step up, definitely,” reasoned Sam, who reached 10-0 at the Manchester Arena in December. “I know they can see something in me because Frank has put me on all these amazing shows, so I know they believe in me, but I think it is about time I get pushed on so I can show them what I am really all about.

“I want to show my level to the public as well.

“There are loads at my weight that would be brilliant fights and I would come out on top. If I was offered Ohara Davies I would take that fight and I’d be confident of winning.

“I am ten times a better boxer than him, so I’d just have to be switched on and watch out for his right hand – which he didn’t throw against Catterall!

“Jack nullified it I think and he was terrified to throw it. It was a weird one, Jack was terrified of it and he was terrified to throw it.

“Ohara is a big name as well and I am ready to move to his level,” added Sam who, age-wise, is the senior citizen of the Brit pack at 140lbs.

“They are younger lads than me, but I feel like a young 30-year-old to be honest because I haven’t had a tough career with any hard fights. I still feel fresh and young and my training in Scotland with Danny (Vaughn) has a given me a new lease of life.

“I feel I am the best boxer I have ever been and I’ve made massive improvements.”

SAM MAXWELL – “I AM READY NOW.”

SAM MAXWELL insists that he is ready to step up and face Britain’s best Super-Lightweights.

Maxwell (9-0) aims to make it a perfect ten as a professional when he boxes on the undercard of Josh Warrington’s IBF World Featherweight title defence against Carl Frampton at Manchester Arena on December 22.

Despite his lack of professional experience Maxwell mixed with greats like Vasyl Lomachenko in the WSB lasting the five round distance in both contests against the brilliant Ukrainian.

So boxing the Best of British in the ten stone division holds no fears for the Liverpool boxer who trains in Glasgow under Danny Vaughan.

Maxwell said: “I see myself getting up there with boxers like Josh Taylor, Jack Catterall, Terry Flanagan and the rest of the division very soon.

“I’m ready now. I was 30 years-old last week and if I’m not ready now I will never be ready. I will fight anyone. The better the opponent, the better I will perform and prove how good I am.

“There are so many good British boxers at ten stone, but without doubt the toughest one to face would be Taylor.

“He is world class and definitely the top one. Flanagan is also at world level.

“People are writing him off, but I think he is very good and last weekend he just ran into a quality operator, Regis Prograis.

“There are a lot of good names, but there are different standards among them. Ohara Davies for example is decent, but didn’t look as good against Jack Catterall.

“Jack is one of those fighters who always finds a way to win. He looks special at times and then looks to just win which he does and did so comfortably against Ohara.

“I am looking to breakthrough onto that scene as early as possible next year.

“There has been some top domestic fight at Super-Lightweight recently like Jack v Ohara and Glenn Foot v Robbie Davies.

“I watched those fights and thought, ‘I’m not far off them’. It has got me and Danny excited.

“I have got the talent. All I am missing is the experience in the rounds, but I feel I am ready to step up. I am looking forward to the challenge and a big year next year.”

Maxwell is excited to be ending 2018 on a stunning BT Sport pay-per-view bill that also includes his close friend JJ Metcalf defending his WBC International Super Welterweight Title against Liam Williams.

He added: “I am going with Frampton, but I wrote Warrington off against Lee Selby, but he put on a masterclass. You can never write him off.

“The fight I’m really looking forward to on the bill is JJ against Liam.

“JJ is an old stablemate of mine and I really hope he can pull through. It is a massive fight and massive ask, but if anyone can do it he can.

“His character and willpower means it will take something special to beat him.”

IBF world featherweight champion Josh Warrington takes on former two-weight world champion Carl Frampton at the Manchester Arena on December 22nd live on BT Sport Box Office. JJ Metcalf (18-0) will defend his WBC International super-welterweight title against Liam Williams (18-2-1) in support of the main event, while Mark Heffron (21-0) will challenge for the British middleweight title.

Belfast’s blue chip featherweight prospect Michael Conlan (9-0) also features on the bill along with world flyweight title challenger Paddy Barnes (5-1) and unbeaten Light Heavyweight contender Steven Ward (9-0). Merseyside will be represented as Liverpool Welterweight prospect Sam Maxwell (9-0) returns to action on the show along with Formby’s Heavyweight Alex Dickinson (6-0). Derbyshire’s highly touted Cruiserweight Jack ‘One Smack’ Massey (14-0) will also feature.
