In the co-main event, MVP’s reigning WBA lightweight world champion Stephanie Han (11-0, 3 KOs), a dedicated mother of two, eight-year veteran of the El Paso Police Department, and former beauty pageant competitor will defend her title against the most dominant two-sport athlete in combat sports history, former boxing and UFC champion, MVP’s Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm (34-2-3, 9 KOs) who will be looking to win a boxing world title in a fourth division. The 10-round lightweight championship bout at 135 lbs will be contested under equal rules to men with three-minute rounds, joining Serrano and Cruz in a historic statement for women’s boxing. Tickets will go on sale Friday, November 7 at 9am ET at prticket.com.

Joining the historic main and co-main event are some of the top Puerto Rican contenders and prospects. MVP’s Puerto Rican Olympian and WBA #1 and WBC #6 contender Yankiel “El Doctorcito” Rivera (7-0-1, 3 KOs) will face former WBO world champion Jonathan “Bomba” González (28-4-1, 14 KOs) in a 10-round flyweight showdown at 112 lbs; MVP’s featherweight contender Jan Paul Rivera (13-0, 7 KOs) taking on San Juan native Alfredo “El Salsero” Cruz (10-3-1, 5 KOs) in an 8-round bout at 126 lbs; undefeated super featherweight Henry “Moncho” Lebron (20-0, 10 KOs) against Juan “Johnny Blaze” Tapia (14-4, 5 KOs) in an 8-round contest at 130 lbs; and Aguada’s rising talent Chris “The Punisher” Echevarria (9-1, 4 KOs) facing Gabriel Bernardi (7-3, 5 KOs) in a 6-round super bantamweight bout at 122 lbs. Also on the card will be Amanda Serrano’s protege, 23-year-old sensation Krystal Rosado (7-1, 2 KOs).

MVP’s undefeated WBA lightweight world champion Stephanie Han (11-0, 3 KOs) is a proud Korean-American and El Paso, Texas native. She has elevated her boxing career to new heights while juggling the roles of devoted mother of two, including her special needs daughter with Nicolaides-Baraitser Syndrome, serving as an eight-year veteran of the El Paso Police Department, and beauty pageant competitor for Miss Sun City and Miss Texas. She launched her amateur boxing journey in July 2006, compiling a winning record before stepping away from the sport in April 2011. A decade later, she returned to boxing after helping her sister, former IBF featherweight world champion Jennifer Han, train to take on Katie Taylor. She made a powerful return to the ring in October 2021 with a unanimous decision win over Isabel Garcia. Remaining undefeated, Han quickly rose through the ranks, most recently delivering a dominant knockout victory over Hannah Terlep to claim the vacant WBA lightweight world title. In her MVP debut in August 2025, Han successfully defended her title against Colombia’s Paulina Angel. As she continues her career under the MVP banner, Han plans to continue establishing herself as one of the premier forces in women’s lightweight boxing.

“From El Paso to the world stage, now I get to fight Holly Holm, in Puerto Rico next to the island’s greatest boxer in Amanda Serrano,” said Stephanie Han. “Every sacrifice has led to this moment, and I’m grateful and excited for the opportunity. Equal opportunity at that, with 3-minute rounds.”

MVP’s Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm (34-2-3, 9 KOs) is widely regarded as the most dominant two-sport athlete in combat sports history. A pioneer in women’s boxing and a trailblazer in MMA, Holm is the only fighter to hold world titles in both disciplines, cementing her legacy as a generational talent and global icon. Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Holm won the IKF national amateur championship title in 2001 before making her pro boxing debut in January 2002, winning by TKO. Holm won her first title, the IBA super lightweight crown, in December 2004. After three successful title defenses, she moved up to 147 lbs and secured the WBA welterweight title in June 2006. In June 2008, Holm stepped up to 154lbs in the super welterweight division to win the IBA and WBAN super welterweight titles. In December 2011, Holm was defeated by Anne Sophie Mathis for the vacant IBA female and WBAN welterweight titles. Holm faced Mathis in a rematch in June 2012, avenging the loss with a UD victory to add the WBF, IBA, and WBAN titles to her collection. Holm then moved back down to the super lightweight division to win the vacant WBF and IBA titles. In May 2013, Holm cemented her legacy as she defended the WBF and IBA super lightweight titles against Mary McGee. Holm pivoted into MMA in 2014, signing a multifight deal with the UFC. Her MMA career culminated in her headlining megafight against then-undefeated bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey in November 2015, the most highly attended UFC event in history at the time. Rousey was the overwhelming favorite going into the bout, but Holm leveraged her southpaw stance and boxing skill to control the opening round before landing a sensational knockout in the second round—and handing Rousey her first loss. As she earned the title, Holm became the first person to win championships in both boxing and MMA. She is currently ranked Boxrec’s #2 greatest pound-for-pound fighter of all time and remains the most dominant two-sport athlete of all time. After signing with MVP in May 2025, she faced then-undefeated Yolanda Vega on the Jake Paul vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. card in June 2025, winning by unanimous decision. She will now make her 24th world title fight appearance, almost thirteen years after her last title reign, as she contends for the WBA lightweight title against Stephanie Han.

“I feel great,” said Holly Holm. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to fight for a fourth weight division title and add to my legacy on Saturday, January 3. I’m thankful for MVP and this opportunity and look forward to fighting in Puerto Rico, an island with a deep boxing culture.”

“Holly Holm is back challenging for a boxing world title, 12 years after leaving the sport and doing it with MVP,” said Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian, co-founders of MVP. “She is facing a multi-faceted athlete in Stephanie Han who is a champion, a mother, and a police officer. And they are doing it with 3-minute rounds like the men. Joining them are an array of Puerto Rican standouts, including MVP’s own Yankiel Rivera, Jan Paul Rivera, and Krystal Rosado, representing the island’s next generation of greatness and demonstrating MVP’s commitment to pushing the sport forward through equality, opportunity, and world-class fights for fans around the globe, live only on DAZN.”

MVP’s Puerto Rican Olympian and WBA #1 ranked flyweight contender Yankiel “El Doctorcito” Rivera (7-0-1, 3 KOs) will face former WBO junior flyweight world champion Jonathan “Bomba” González (28-4-1, 14 KOs) in a 10-round flyweight bout at 112 lbs. Rivera, a 28-year-old sensation from Toa Alta, Puerto Rico, has rapidly become one of the island’s brightest stars, holding the WBA Continental, WBC Silver, and WBO Intercontinental flyweight titles at 112 lbs. A 2020 Olympian and five-time Puerto Rican national champion, Rivera has impressed with his speed, precision, and composure, most recently earning a majority draw against Angelino Cordova. Facing him on Saturday, January 3, is González, a Caguas, Puerto Rico resident and former WBO light flyweight world champion, who has represented Puerto Rico on the world stage since turning professional in 2011 after a decorated amateur career that included gold medals at the 2008 Youth World Championships and 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games.

“Although fighting a fellow countryman is not something I especially enjoy, this is my profession. I will fight anyone, anywhere until I reach my goal,” said Yankiel Rivera. “Bomba is a great fighter with great boxing capabilities. The fact that he is a former world champion says it all. But he simply will not be able to stop me from my goal. I have come too far for him to take away my dream. I will do my job, which is to take him out. He will try to do the same. He is in for a tough night. I am elated to have the opportunity to fight at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum. All the all-time greats have fought there, and being able to fight there is always an honor. To all my fans, get your tickets for an exciting night of boxing. You will see the best version of myself taking care of business. See you there. Don’t miss it. Puerto Rico!!!”

On the preliminary card, MVP’s #7 WBA and #14 WBO featherweight contender Jan Paul Rivera (13-0, 7 KOs) will take on San Juan native Alfredo “El Salsero” Cruz (10-3-1, 5 KOs) in an 8-round featherweight bout at 126 lbs, showcasing two of Puerto Rico’s finest rising talents in a can’t-miss showdown. Rivera, the 24-year-old sensation from Salinas, Puerto Rico, was a decorated member of the Puerto Rican National Boxing Team, compiling over 200 amateur bouts and earning two consecutive Puerto Rico Elite National Championships in 2020 and 2021, along with a silver medal at the 2018 AIBA Youth World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Since turning professional, Rivera has quickly risen through the ranks, displaying exceptional technical skill, power, and composure while remaining undefeated across fights in the United States, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Colombia. Most recently, he secured a dominant unanimous decision victory over Daniel Bailey at MVP Fight Night in August 2025. His opponent, 28-year-old Alfredo “El Salsero” Cruz, is a San Juan, Puerto Rico native, who comes to the ring after taking a unanimous decision win over Carlos Arrieta-Torres in October 2025.

“I am very happy to be fighting again in Puerto Rico,” said Jan Paul Rivera. “Stepping back into the ring for a big event like this fills us with enthusiasm. In this fight, as in past fights, we will prepare to put on a great show and take the victory by any means necessary. We are very grateful to everyone involved in this great event.”

Aguadilla, Puerto Rico’s undefeated super featherweight Henry “Moncho” Lebron (20-0, 10 KOs) is 28 years old. Lebron is currently Boxrec’s #1-ranked Puerto Rican talent at 130lbs following his most recent victory to win the vacant IBF Latino Super Featherweight title and the WBO NABO super featherweight titles in a 10-round unanimous decision over Christopher Diaz in December 2024. He is currently the IBF #6, WBO #8, and WBA #8 contender at 130lbs. Lebron will face Brownsville, Texas rising contender Juan “Johnny Blaze” Tapia (14-4, 5 KOs). The 32-year-old won his latest bout by TKO in March 2025.

Aguada, Puerto Rico’s Chris “The Punisher” Echevarria (9-1, 4 KOs) will also return to the ring on the preliminary card. After a difficult loss in his pro debut in 2021, Echevarria has rebounded with an active nine-win streak. The 25-year-old talent most recently defeated Charlie Clemente-Andino by second round KO in December 2024 and followed the stoppage with a dominant 10-round unanimous decision over David Quijano-Garcia in June 2025. He will face Cidra, Puerto Rico’s Gabriel Bernardi (7-3, 5 KOs). The 29-year-old aims to rebound after his two latest tough fights and re-establish himself as a contender to watch in the division.

MVP’s rising bantamweight contender and Amanda Serrano’s protege, Krystal Rosado (7-1, 2 KOs) will also join the Serrano vs. Cruz 2 card. She is currently the WBO #5, IBF #8 and WBA #9 contender. She most recently faced former 118lb world champion Shurretta Metcalf on Most Valuable Prospects 16 in October 2025.

In the main event, MVP’s first signee, boxing trailblazer and unified featherweight world champion Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano (47-4-1, 31 KOs) will make her long-awaited return in front of her home Puerto Rican fans in a unified WBA and WBO world title defense against Mexico’s #4-ranked WBO contender Erika “Dinamita” Cruz (18-2-1, 4 KOs). The 10-round, highly anticipated rematch will be contested under equal rules to men with three-minute rounds, as Serrano makes her latest statement for equality in women’s boxing alongside Cruz. Presale for Serrano vs. Cruz 2 will begin Thursday, November 6 at 10am ET. Tickets will go on sale on Friday, November 7 at 9am ET at prticket.com.

Rivera and Córdova Set for Interim WBA Flyweight Title Battle

This Saturday, August 23, the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida, will host a high-stakes clash as Venezuela’s Angelino Córdova and Puerto Rico’s Yankiel Rivera square off for the WBA interim flyweight world title.

Córdova (19-0-1, 12 KOs), born in Ciudad Bolívar, arrives as one of Latin America’s most formidable contenders. At 29, he’s built his unbeaten résumé with victories across Venezuela, Mexico, and the United States, earning a reputation for his heavy right hand, offensive style, and ability to close the show. His steady progression has now brought him to the doorstep of world championship glory.

His last outing came in December 2024, when he scored a commanding unanimous decision over Puerto Rico’s Josué Morales in San Juan, a performance that underlined his dominance after the third round. Now, with momentum and confidence on his side, Córdova seeks his first world crown.

Rivera (7-0, 3 KOs), from Toa Alta, Puerto Rico, represents the new wave of Caribbean talent. A Pan American Games bronze medalist in Lima 2019 and a Tokyo 2020 Olympian, the 26-year-old has transitioned seamlessly into the pro ranks, notching quality wins over the likes of Andy Domínguez and Víctor Sandoval. His blend of speed, movement, and sound defense has made him one of the division’s most promising prospects.

In his most recent fight, Rivera stopped American Ángel González in November 2024 in San Juan, showcasing his improving offensive arsenal and killer instinct. He enters the bout as the WBA’s No. 1 contender, while Córdova holds the No. 2 spot.

It’s a true collision of styles: Córdova will bring pressure, volume, and power, while Rivera counters with finesse, footwork, and precision. Both men remain undefeated, both come hungry—and only one will walk away with the interim world title.

ORLANDO, FL – June 20, 2025 – Today, Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) announced its upcoming MVP Fight Night on Saturday, August 23, streaming live globally as part of the DAZN subscription package. MVP’s Puerto Rican Olympian Yankiel “El Doctorcito” Rivera (7-0, 3 KOs), ranked the #1 WBA, #5 WBC, and #7 WBO contender at 112lbs, will headline the main card vs. WBO international flyweight titleholder Angelino “Huracan” Cordova (19-0-1, 12 KOs) in a 12-round bout at 112 lbs for the WBA interim flyweight world title. Joining the main card is Boxlab Promotions’ and CES Boxing’s Puerto Rican standout Jamaine “The Technician” Ortiz (19-2-1, 9 KOs), who will face Calgary, Alberta, Canada’s powerhouse Steve “The Dragon” Claggett (39-8-2, 27 KOs) in a 10-round super lightweight bout contested at 140 lbs for the WBA Continental USA title. Tickets for MVP Fight Night are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com.

Headlining the MVP Fight Night main card on Saturday, August 23 is MVP’s Puerto Rican Olympian and the WBA’s #1 ranked flyweight contender Yankiel “El Doctorcito” Rivera (7-0, 3 KOs). From Toa Alta, Puerto Rico by way of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, 27-year-old flyweight sensation Rivera holds an undefeated record and currently reigns as the WBA Continental, WBC Silver, and WBO Intercontinental flyweight champion at 112 lbs. Rivera launched his standout amateur career in 2014 and quickly rose through the ranks, capturing Puerto Rico’s National Championship at 108 lbs in both 2015 and 2016. In 2017, he transitioned to the 114-pound division, where he remained unbeaten at the national level, claiming the national championship title five years in a row from 2017 through 2021. Internationally, Rivera earned bronze medals at the 2018 Central American Games and 2019 Pan American Games, and competed twice in the world amateur championships. Campaigning as a flyweight, he became Puerto Rico’s sole boxing representative at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Rivera turned professional in September 2022 with a first-round TKO over Jose Antonio Jimenez, followed by a third-round TKO win over Ramon Velasquez that November. He appeared on MVP’s Amanda Serrano vs. Erika Cruz undercard in February 2023, facing Fernando Diaz and earned a unanimous decision victory. In February 2024, he claimed the then-vacant WBA and WBC Continental Americas titles with a unanimous decision over Andy Dominguez Velasquez. He followed that up in June 2024 by capturing the vacant WBO Intercontinental title via unanimous decision against Victor Efrain Sandoval. In his most recent outing, Rivera defended his titles with a dominant fourth-round TKO of Angel Gonzalez in December 2024. He is currently ranked #1 by the WBA, #5 by the WBC, and #7 by the WBO in the flyweight division at 112lbs.

“Fighting for the WBA interim World Championship is both an honor and another great challenge that I must face,” said Yankiel Rivera. “I remember Angelino from the amateurs, although our paths never crossed. Angelino is an extraordinary fighter who has all my respect. I’m training accordingly, and it’ll be an honor to share the ring with him and fight for that belt. You can be sure of one thing, I’ve been preparing for this moment since I first put a pair of gloves. The belt and the opponent I’m facing only fuel my hunger for working hard and win. I hope Angelino is also training at full capacity. We’ll surely bring a great show. But in the end, only one hand will be raised and that hand will be mine. I hope to see all my fans from Florida and Puerto Rico in what will be a great night of boxing. Those who can’t attend can watch my fight through DAZN. I thank MVP and my manager, Peter Kahn, for this great opportunity. Puerto Rico, that belt is coming home!”

From Caracas, Venezuela by way of Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela, WBO international flyweight champion Angelino “Huracan” Cordova (19-0-1, 12 KOs) will look to make a major statement in the division when he faces Rivera on Saturday, August 23. He debuted professionally in 2017 at age 21, defeating Dallan Llovera, and quickly rose through the ranks, capturing the WBO Latino Junior Flyweight title in 2022 against Axel Vega and the WBO International Flyweight title in 2023 by upsetting former world champion Ángel “Tito” Acosta. In March 2024, Cordova contested for the WBC flyweight world title against Julio Cesar Martinez, though the bout was ruled a no contest due to Martinez violating anti-doping rules. Cordova most recently defeated Josue Morales by unanimous decision in December 2024. The 29-year-old remains a top contender with ambitions to claim a world championship.

Joining the main card is Boxlab Promotions and CES Boxing’s Puerto Rican standout Jamaine “The Technician” Ortiz (19-2-1, 9 KOs) in a 10-round super lightweight bout contested at 140 lbs. From Worcester, Massachusetts, Ortiz’s passion for combat sports began at just seven years old when he began boxing, paving the way for a strong amateur career that kicked off in March 2011. After nearly five years of honing his skills, Ortiz made his professional debut in May 2016, earning a victory by RTD against Josh Parker. After years of dominating in the ring, Ortiz delivered two career-defining performances: in October 2022, he pushed former unified lightweight champion Vasiliy Lomachenko to the brink in a razor-close decision loss, showcasing his elite defensive skills and heart; and in February 2024, he challenged Teofimo Lopez for the WBO super lightweight title, nearly dethroning the champion in another tightly contested decision loss after 12 grueling rounds. Despite this setback, Ortiz is mounting a determined comeback in pursuit of another title shot. He most recently secured a fourth-round TKO over Cristian Ruben Mino in November 2024, followed by a unanimous decision victory against Yomar Alamo in March 2025. Ortiz will look to keep this momentum going as he faces Claggett on Saturday, August 23.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada’s powerhouse Steve “The Dragon” Claggett (39-8-2, 27 KOs) began boxing at 13 years old and had an impressive amateur career, capturing three Golden Gloves titles. He turned professional at 19, making his debut in September 2008 with a majority decision win over Brandon Carlick. Claggett remained undefeated until March 2011, when he suffered his first loss by TKO to Romeo Jakosalem. Undeterred, he continued to climb the ranks, and in June 2024, he challenged Teofimo Lopez for the WBO super lightweight world title. After a hard-fought 12-round bout, Claggett fell short by unanimous decision. Most recently, he delivered a dominant fourth-round TKO against Eduardo Estela in October 2024, reaffirming his drive to earn another shot at a world title.

“MVP Fight Night in Orlando represents our continued commitment to delivering world-class boxing events that spotlight emerging global talent,” said Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian, co-founders of MVP. “Our newest signee Yankiel Rivera, a rising star from Puerto Rico with the potential to become one of the sport’s next great champions, will make his MVP debut in the main event and Jamaine Ortiz vs. Steve Claggett will be a high-stakes clash between two of the top contenders at 140lbs looking to break into the world title conversation. We’re proud to showcase this caliber of talent live on DAZN and look forward to announcing additional matchups in the coming weeks.”

“MVP has put together an incredible card, and Caribe Royale is once again proud to host them,” said Amaury Piedra, President of Boxlab Promotions and Managing Director of the Caribe Royale Resort. “This card features two titles so far, with more to come, plus a stacked undercard. Central Florida fans should be excited and turn out for this event! Caribe Royale is excited to welcome the local public as well as visitors to the area coming in to see one of the best cards of the year in Florida!”

MVP SIGNS PUERTO RICAN OLYMPIAN AND UNDEFEATED TOP-RANKED WBA, WBC, AND WBO CONTENDER YANKIEL RIVERA

NEW YORK, NY – June 6, 2025 – Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) today announced the addition of Puerto Rican Olympian Yankiel “El Doctorcito” Rivera (7-0, 3 KOs) to its elite roster of world-class fighters. Rivera, who is currently ranked #1 by the WBA, #5 by the WBC, and #7 by the WBO in the flyweight division at 112lbs, will make his debut under the MVP banner at an upcoming event in summer 2025.

From Toa Alta, Puerto Rico by way of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, 27-year-old flyweight sensation Yankiel Rivera holds an undefeated record and currently reigns as the WBA Continental, WBC Silver, and WBO Intercontinental flyweight champion at 112 lbs. Now, he embarks on the next chapter of his career under the Most Valuable Promotions banner, with his next fight slated for summer 2025.

“I believe everything happens for a reason. And I firmly believe MVP is the company that will take me to the very next level,” said Yankiel Rivera. “This is an additional motivation for my next fight. Nobody is stopping me. And I am convinced MVP is the perfect choice to take me to a world championship. I want to thank MVP, my Manager, Peter Kahn, for making this happening. Thank you Jake Paul for giving me a chance.”

“Yankiel’s signing is a natural extension of our mission at MVP to identify and elevate the next generation of Puerto Rican boxing talent,” said Amanda Serrano. “I was so proud to watch him represent our small but mighty island as Puerto Rico’s lone boxing Olympian in Tokyo. Just two years later, he made his mark on the undercard of my historic fight against Erika Cruz—when I became Puerto Rico’s first Undisputed champion. It’s an honor to welcome Yankiel to the team, and I can’t wait to continue building the Boricua boxing legacy together.”

“MVP is a global company, but the heart and soul of our success is Puerto Rico based,” said Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian, co-founders of Most Valuable Promotions. ““Yankiel Rivera is one of the most exciting rising stars in boxing and a strong addition to our rapidly growing MVP roster. As the island’s sole boxing representative at the Tokyo Olympics, he carried Puerto Rico’s legacy on the global stage—and he’s continued that momentum with an undefeated pro career and multiple titles. With Yankiel now joining Amanda Serrano, Jan Paul Rivera, Krystal Rosado, and Alexis Chaparro, we’re proud to continue building a powerful foundation of Puerto Rican talent at MVP. We’re deeply committed to the island’s boxing future, and we can’t wait to showcase Yankiel’s brilliance this summer.”

Angel Gonzalez & Yankiel Rivera Guarantee a Warin Puerto Rico on Saturday

SAN JUAN, PR –It’s a battle of undefeated Puerto Rican prospects on Saturday, December 7, when CES Boxing’s Angel “Set It Off” Gonzalez (14-0, 7 KOs) faces Matchroom’s Yankiel “El Doctorcito” Rivera (6-0, 2 KOs) at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico and live on DAZN.

Each fighter guaranteed a war on Saturday night as they both know that a world title opportunity is next for the winner, who will also take home the vacant WBC Silver Flyweight title.

Below are quotes from the combatants from the final press conference:

ANGEL GONZALEZ (NABF FLYWEIGHT CHAMPION):

I’m ready for December 7. I’m excited, I’ve been training 2-3 times a day and I’m ready for the opportunity.

It’s definitely going to be a war. It’s two Puerto Ricans going head-to-head, so we’re gonna give it all for the fans.  Let the best man win, which will be me because I put the work in every day.  I never doubt myself and I’m ready for the challenge before moving on to a world title.

YANKIEL RIVERA (WBO INTERCONTINENTAL & WBA CONTINENTAL AMERICAS FLYWEIGHT CHAMPION):

This is another big test for me in my short career, but my goal is to be world champion, so we have to come out victorious on Saturday to get the world title shot.  We’re coming with everything to get the victory.

It will be another great fight and a war for all of the fans to enjoy.  He’s a great fighter who will do everything to remain unbeaten, but I’ll give everything to stay undefeated and to get the world title shot.  Sadly, one of us has to lose, but it won’t be me.

Angel Gonzalez on facing Yankiel Rivera in Puerto Rico:”It’s going to be epic!”

SAN JUAN, PR – Angel “Set It Off” Gonzalez (14-0, 7 KOs) faces Yankiel “El Doctorcito” Rivera (6-0, 2 KOs) in an all-Puerto Rican clash on December 7 at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The bout is promoted by Matchroom Boxing in association with CES Boxing and will be televised live worldwide on DAZN on a stacked card that begins at 7pm EST.  Tickets on sale here

There will be a lot of gold at stake, as the pair battle for Rivera’s WBA Continental Americas and WBO Inter-Continental flyweight titles as well as the vacant WBC Silver Flyweight Championship.

“It’s a dream come true,” says Gonzalez about fighting for multiple titles in Puerto Rico.  “I feel great about it because I’m Puerto Rican.  It’s my heritage.  I wasn’t born there, but my background is all Puerto Rican. This is a blessing”

While the 31-year-old was born and raised in Hartford, CT, his parents are both Puerto Rican and a lot of his family reside on the island.

“My dad is from Comerio and my mom’s side is from Ponce,” explains Gonzalez.  “I’ll have family from my dad’s side and a few from my mom’s side there too.  My manager is always at a boxing gym in La Perla, so I’ll have a lot of local support there.”

Gonzalez will need that fanfare when he faces Rivera, a 2020 Olympian based in Toa Alta who is being groomed as the next Puerto Rican star.  While ‘El Doctorcito’ only has 6 pro bouts, he is an experienced amateur who has been matched aggressively thus far.

“He’s an Olympian, so I figure he fought a whole bunch of styles as an amateur,” says Gonzalez when assessing his opponent’s experience.  “I feel like they’re moving him at a fast pace because of that experience, but I have more pro rounds.  I have double the fights and the pros are different from the amateurs, so I have an edge there.”

While each pugilist can make a case as to who is more experienced, ‘Set It Off’ considers the biggest difference between them to be conditioning.

“I think the key difference will be that I get stronger as the rounds go,” asserts Gonzalez, who has been training 3 times a day for this fight. “If you see my last 2 to 3 fights, I just keep getting stronger as the rounds go. When I looked at footage of his last 2 fights, he got winded as the rounds progressed.  He slowed down a whole lot by rounds 7, 8, 9, and 10.”

Indeed, in his last 2 victories, Rivera visibly tired as the rounds progressed.  In fact, in his fight against Andy Dominguez, Yankiel was leading handily until a series of right hands sent him reeling in round 9. Rivera was able to weather the storm, but the fight changed dramatically after that sequence.

“He’s tough,” admits Gonzalez of Rivera.  “Once you get into the world rankings, you have to fight tough guys, but the winner on December 7 will come down to who boxes smarter.”

While Gonzalez concedes that Rivera has performed well against aggressive fighters so far, he believes Yankiel has not faced the type of style that will make him think throughout a fight.

“The guys that he fought are more come forward fighters,” reasons Gonzalez.  “They don’t move their head as much. I feel like I have a better style: I use my jab coming in and I move, so I’ll give him different looks that he hasn’t seen yet.  That’s where I think my advantage is in this fight.”

While Gonzalez plans to box his way to victory, he’ll have to do so against a quick fighter who likes to switch between orthodox and southpaw stances, which is something the camp has been focused on.

“I’ve dealt with that style,” says Gonzalez of facing a switch-hitting fighter.  “I fought one guy early in my career that would switch. My last fight was against a southpaw and I’ve been sparring more lefties than righties in this camp. A lefty is harder to find, so I’ve been getting great sparring with a lot of gyms coming down to Four Ropes Boxing where I set up camp in Hartford.  I’ve sparred many lefties for this one, including Carlos Perez.  He’s bigger than me, but he’s a great lefty and he’s helped get me ready.”

Other than their fighting stance, the fighters have more similarities than differences.  Both are unbeaten Puerto Rican prospects, gave common opponent Christian Robles his first 2 losses, and each last fought on June 15, so there is no disparity in activity.

“My last fight had a lot to do with this fight happening,” surmises Gonzalez, who beat Josue Morales at Mohegan Sun Arena on June 15 for the vacant NABF Flyweight title.  “It was a great experience.  I’m grateful to the NABF because it catapulted me up the world rankings, but my main goal is to be a world champion. There’s no letting up until I win a world title.”

That world title opportunity is likely to come with a win over Yankiel Rivera on December 7, which is why Angel Gonzalez is not leaving any stone unturned in this camp.

“I’m humble and I never let my guard down,” says Gonzalez about how meticulous his preparation has been.  “I train hard and I’m ready for whatever he comes with. I’m in the best shape of my life and I’m going to go in there, do my best and come out victorious.  It’s going to be an epic fight and you’ll see me become the new WBA, WBO, and WBC Silver Flyweight Champion that night.”

RIVERA DEFENDS FLYWEIGHT TITLES AGAINST GONZALEZ IN PUERTO RICO

Yankiel “El Doctorcito” Rivera (6-0, 2 KOs) will take on Angel “Set it Off” Gonzalez (14-0, 7 KOs) on Saturday, December 7, at the Roberto Clemente Coliseo in San Juan, Puerto Rico, live worldwide on DAZN, with Rivera’s WBA Continental Americas and WBO Intercontinental Flyweight titles in addition to the vacant WBC Silver Flyweight title. The bout is part of a huge night of action brought to you by Matchroom Boxing and Universal Promotions, headlined by Liam Paro defending his IBF World Junior-Welterweight title against Richardson Hitchins. Rivera vs. Gonzalez is promoted in association with CES Boxing

.TICKETS FOR PARO VS. HITCHINS WILL GO ON SALE ON OCTOBER 7The 27-year-old Rivera is handily placed in the rankings at #3 with the WBA, #9 with the WBC and #11 with the WBO, and fights at home for the second time in 2024 having seen off the experienced Victor Sandoval over ten rounds in June in Manati, defending the WBA strap and adding the WBO belt.

‘Doctorcito’ will be looking to rubber stamp his World title credentials for a shot in 2025, but Gonzalez is determined to spoil those plans in the biggest fight of his career.  Gonzalez, a Hartford, Connecticut native of Puerto Rican descent, won the NABF Flyweight title in June and can catapult himself into world title contention with a victory over Rivera in December.  The 31-year-old is currently ranked #22 with the WBC.

“The goal for which I embarked on this wonderful journey full of hope is closer than ever,” said Rivera. “By now, there are no easy fights, and each fight gets me closer to that cherished and long-awaited opportunity for a World title. On December 7, I will be putting my titles on the line, but I will also be disputing the WBC Silver title.

“This victory will propel me right at the door of that World title opportunity, and there is no better place to do this than in front of my people at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum.  Angel González is a dangerous opponent and has all my respect.  But I was born to become champion of the world and no one, absolutely no one, will stop me short of my destiny.

“I want to give special thanks to Matchroom, my manager Peter Kahn and my adviser Miguel Ortega, who have, without reservations, put their trust in me.  I will not let you down. See you all on December 7 where the great one’s fight: the Roberto Clemente, Puerto Rico!”

“This fight means everything to me,” said Gonzalez.  “It puts me one fight closer to my goal of becoming a World champion.  The best thing about it is, I’m fighting in my island of Puerto Rico.  I was born and raised in Hartford, Connecticut, but Puerto Rico will always be my home. My roots, just like my opponents’ are here.

“The Boxing energy in Puerto Rico is unparalleled and it will give me more confidence and motivation to show all my people how great I am.  I can’t wait for the opportunity.  I want to thank CES Boxing and my promoter Jimmy Burchfield, Sr. for making this happen.  I won’t let you guys down.  See you December 7.”

After being announced on the card in June, Marc Castro and Stephanie Pineiro have confirmed opponents for the night, with Castro (13-0 8 KOs) tackling Agustin Quintana (20-1-2 13 KOs) over ten rounds at Lightweight, and Pineiro (7-0 2 KOs) meeting Ogleidis Suarez (30-5-1 14 KOs) over eight rounds Welterweight.

Those clashes are part of a stacked undercard that is led by a mouth-watering Super-Featherweight clash between Henry Lebron and Christopher Diaz.

Lebron (19-0 10 KOs) returns to his homeland for the first time in five years and does so in the biggest night of his career, as the #4 in the IBF looks to press his claims for World title action in 2025 with a big win over a domestic rival and pick up the vacant IBF Latino and WBO NABO titles in the process. Diaz (29-5 19 KOs) sits pretty at #7 in the WBA, has already tasted World title action and is hungry to do so again, and ‘Pitufo’ puts his WBA Continental Latin America title on the line in a pivotal clash for the immediate futures of both.

Jalil Hackett will aim to show once again that he has no fear in the infancy of his career as he travels to Puerto Rico for a title defense. Hackett (9-0 7 KOs) was impressive in a big step up to win the WBA Continental Americas Welterweight title on his Matchroom debut against Peter Dobson in July, and ‘Major’ will defend that title in another real test against Puerto Rico’s former amateur standout Jose Roman (13-1 6 KOs)

Puerto Rico’s Juan Zayas (10-0-1 8 KOs) takes on Dominican Geraldo Valdez (16-2 11 KOs) over eight rounds at Bantamweight and Matchroom’s Puerto Rican talent William Ortiz (6-0 4 KOs) faces fellow unbeaten Puerto Rican Lionell Colon (6-0 3 KOs) over eight rounds at Super-Lightweight.

FIERRO AND RIVERA LAND TITLE FIGHTS IN PUERTO RICO

A classic boxing rivalry will shape the undercard on June 15 with three Mexico vs. Puerto Rico title fights as Angel Fierro faces Alfredo Santiago for the WBO NABO Jr. Welterweight title and Yankiel Rivera meets Victor Sandoval for the WBC and WBA Continental Americas and WBO Intercontinental Flyweight titles – and new Puerto Rico signings Stephanie Piñeiro and William Ortiz continue their pro journeys at Coliseo Juan Aubin Cruz Abreu in Manati, Puerto Rico live worldwide on DAZN – a night topped by the homecoming World title defense of IBF World Jr Welterweight king Subriel Matias taking on Liam Paro.

Fierro (22-1-2 17 KOs) tests the waters up at 140lbs and looks to land a belt in his first fight at the weight. The 25 year old has good memories of fighting in Puerto Rico, where he won his first title with an incredible turnaround KO win over former World champion Alberto Machado – climbing off canvas in the first and second rounds to detonate a left hand in the sixth to win the WBO NABO 135lb belt in a fight he took at late notice. ‘Tashiro’ successfully defended that title four times, most recently in Tijuana in September with a split decision win over Brayan Zamarripa, but now looks to make an impression at 140lbs and aims to do so in impressive fashion.

“I feel very excited to return to the ring and even more so in Puerto Rico, where three years ago I was crowned WBO NABO champion, and what better way than to return against a great rival in Alfredo for another title at 140lbs,” said Fierro. “It will be a great fight, Mexico vs. Puerto Rico, where I come to repeat the same story from three years ago but this time much better.”

Santiago (14-2 6 KOs) fights at 140lbs for the second time and returns to action for the first time since landing a first round TKO win over Karl Dargan in Minneapolis in June 2022. The Dominican born, Puerto Rican based 29 year old previously challenged Devin Haney for the WBC World Lightweight title, and that’s the level he wants to reach at 140lbs, starting with a big fight with Fierro on June 15.

“Angel is an excellent Mexican opponent,” said Santiago. “I was born in Moca, a small town in the Dominican Republic, but I’ve lived in Puerto Rico for many years. I have made all my professional boxing career here in Puerto Rico. I am not letting Mr. Fierro come to my second home and beat me. That simply will not happen. Not in front of my people. I see you all on June 15. We are so ready!!”

Rivera (5-0 2 KOs) landed his first titles in his last outing, dominating Andy Dominguez in Orlando to pick up the WBA and WBC Continental Americas Flyweight titles, and on June 15, the Puerto Rican Olympian can add another belt with the WBO Intercontinental also on the line.

“Every time two fighters from Mexico and Puerto Rico step into the ring, great things happen,” said Rivera. “Mexico and Puerto Rico have a long-standing boxing rivalry that has acquired legendary status over the years. I am proud to say that I already belong to that tradition. On June 15, I will have the opportunity to continue to contribute to the Mexico v. Puerto Rico rivalry.

“I face a tough and complicated opponent in Victor Sandoval, who has all my respect and for who I am training accordingly. Most of all, I will have the opportunity to face this great challenge in front of my people. I already can feel the energy that’s going to fill that sold out arena. It will be a true honor to represent Puerto Rico in a fight against a Mexican warrior in front of my people. I feel truly blessed for this opportunity. I would like to thank Matchroom, Mr. Eddie Hearn, DAZN and my manager Mr. Peter Kahn for making this fight possible and for bringing this stellar boxing card to Puerto Rico. We are a country of Boxing. We are going to show it come June 15. Vamos Arriba, Boricua!”

Sandoval (37-4 23 KOs) is entering his 42nd fight just shy of his 27th birthday, and the Mexican fights in his third title fight having previously won the WBC Youth Silver Bantamweight and the WBC International Super-Flyweight titles.

“I would like to thank Matchroom and my team for this great opportunity,” said Sandoval. “Mexico Vs Puerto Rico have always produced great fights and this one is not going to be an exception. Camp for this fight is going great, on June 15, there will be only one winner and that winner will be me. Viva Mexico!”

Unbeaten Puerto Ricans Piñeiro (6-0 2 KOs) and Ortiz (5-0 4 KOs) announced co-promotional deals with Matchroom yesterday, and today they are confirmed for the June 15 card. Piñeiro fights for her first pro titles on the night, taking on Mexico’s Diana Tapia (7-1 2 KOs) for the WBA Continental Americas and WBO International Welterweight titles. Ortiz fights for the sixth time in the paid ranks, and does so over six rounds at Super-Lightweight against fellow Puerto Rican Luis Gonzalez (5-2 4 KOs)

“I feel honored to be part of such an important match on June 15 in Manati,” said Piñeiro. “Tapia is a great fighter, and we are training hard to face the best version of her. We’re going to put on a great show. It will be a classic Puerto Rico vs. Mexico battle. One step closer to a World championship match”.

“I am so thankful to my promoter Daniel Otter and the team at Three Lions Promotions and everyone at Matchroom for giving me this title shot,” said Tapia. “I have trained very hard to get where I am and come June 15, I will be taking the belts back home to Mexico with me.”

“We would like to thank Eddie Hearn and everyone at Matchroom for this opportunity, along with the WBA and WBO,” said Tapia’s promoter, Daniel Otter of Three Lions Promotions. “Diana looks amazing in training, and we are confident she will make short work of Stephanie and become the new WBA Continental Americas and WBO International champion.”

“I am very happy to be fighting in front of my people of Puerto Rico once again, especially this time since I’m fighting on a world stage level event!” said Ortiz.

“June 15 in Puerto Rico promises to be a brilliant night of boxing,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “The main event is going to be a war, and with three Puerto Rico vs. Mexico title battles added to the card, this is going to be non-stop action from first bell to last.”

The classic Mexico vs. Puerto Rico showdown will be represented in this Andy Dominguez vs. Yankiel Rivera fight, which will be one of the most interesting of the night.

YANKIEL RIVERA SIGNS PROMOTIONAL DEAL WITH MATCHROOM

Puerto Rican amateur star Yankiel Rivera has signed a multi-fight deal with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom – and will fight for the third time in the paid ranks on the undercard of the undisputed double-header with Amanda Serrano vs. Erika Cruz and Alycia Baumgardner vs. Elhem Mekhaled on Saturday February 4 at Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York, live worldwide on DAZN.A

TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW AT TICKETMASTER.COM AND MORE INFORMATION CAN BE FOUND AT MSG.COM

Rivera (2-0 2 KOs) turned pro in Barranquilla, Colombia in September with a first round KO win and quickly made it two wins inside the distance with a third round KO in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico in November.

The 25 year old, campaigning at Flyweight, was Puerto Rico’s sole representative at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, just one stand out moment from an amateur career that boasted a record of 133-14, winning a host of medals and twice fighting at the World Championships.

‘El Doctorcito’ will be looking to make it three KOs in three on February 4 when he takes on Fernando Diaz(11-2-1 3 KOs) over eight rounds, and he’s looking to impress and show that his plans to move at pace are real.

“Today is a date I will never forget,” said Rivera. “Although this is not my ultimate goal in the sport, signing with Matchroom constitutes a landmark in my career and a dream come true. I am humbled and excited to now be part of this great team, and I look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with Matchroom.

“This is the best motivation to keep working hard and keep learning. I am ready to deliver. To my people in New York, I will see you on February 4 and I promise you a great performance.”

“I am delighted to welcome Yankiel to the team,” said Hearn. “The amateur pedigree speaks for itself, and he’s made a great start to life in the pro game. The brilliant Puerto Rico fight fans in New York will already be out in force to see Amanda Serrano, and Yankiel will become an instant hit with them.

“We have been tracking him for some time and he was set to fight in Puerto Rico on February 11, but the chance arose to land him on this blockbuster card in the Big Apple and I am thrilled to be able to give this huge talent such a great platform in his first fight with Matchroom.”

“Yankiel’s signing with Matchroom constitutes the culmination of a process that started months ago,” said Miguel Ortega, Rivera’s Legal Advisor. “It also marks the beginning of something special. We are confident that Yankiel’s talent and work ethic will take him all the way to the World championship. We are equally confident that Matchroom is the perfect promoter to take Yankiel to such heights.

“Matchroom has the big names in Yankiel’s current and potential divisions, and we are ready for all of them. We thank Mr. Eddie Hearn and Matchroom, as well as Mr. Peter Kahn from FGA, for this great opportunity. We look forward to February 4th at the MSG for a great show!”

“It is very exciting to see Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing getting behind Yankiel Rivera,” said Peter Kahn, Rivera’s manager and 2022 BWAA Manager of the Year. “Matchroom understands the rich boxing history of Puerto Rico and the importance of having an Olympian like Yankiel on the roster including fighting in one of the most exciting and competitive weight divisions in boxing right now.

“There is no better place for Yankiel to be making his Matchroom debut than Madison Square Garden where the fans will proudly be waiving the Puerto Rican flag.”

Rivera is the final star on display on February 4 and joins Shadasia Green in completing the card. Green (11-0 10 KOs) will defend her WBC Silver Super-Middleweight title against Elin Cederroos in an eliminator for the WBC World title held by undisputed champion Franchon Crews-Dezurn, who landed the titles at Madison Square Garden in April against former WBA and IBF champion Cederroos (8-1 4 KOs).

It’s another historic night of action from Matchroom in New York, as we follow the epic fight of the year clash between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano in April with another double-header of undisputed action.

Serrano moves to Hulu Theater to aim to hold all the marbles for a second time, this time at Featherweight where she faces Mexico’s WBA ruler Cruz. Baumgardner recorded the best win of her career to date when she added the IBF, WBO and Ring Magazine belts held by bitter rival Mikaela Mayer in October in London via split decision to her WBC and IBO straps. The vacant WBA belt is the last piece of the puzzle, and French former interim WBC champion Mekhaled will look to spoil the Detroit star’s plans in her first fight in the States.

Richardson Hitchins (15-0 7 KOs) takes on New Jersey’s John Bauza (17-0 7 KOs) for the IBF North American and USWBC 140lb titles, there’s two more female title fights on the card, as Australian star Skye Nicolson (5-0) looks to take a big step towards World title action against fellow unbeaten fighter Tania Alvarez (7-0 1 KO) for the WBC Silver Featherweight title and there’s another all-undefeated belt battle as Ramla Ali (7-0 2 KOs) faces title action for the first time in the paid ranks as she meets Avril Mathie (8-0-1 3 KOs) for the IBF Intercontinental Super-Bantamweight strap, and Aaron Aponte (6-0-1 2 KOs) and Brooklyn’s Harley Mederos (4-0 3 KOs) complete the action against Joshua David Rivers (8-1 5 KOs) and Julio Madera (4-2 2 KOs) respectively.
